On Gerrard Street in busy East Chinatown sits the tall Eastdale Collegiate Institute. A concrete institution at first glance, but climb the school’s five storeys and you’ll discover Eden. On the school’s rooftop, a terrace opens onto Toronto’s skyline; high above the neighbourhood’s surrounding buildings. It’s there that row upon row of fresh garden fruits, veggies and herbs sit growing, waiting for harvest. The produce is there as part of a collaborative project by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and FoodShare Toronto – a social enterprise program that promotes urban agriculture and food literacy among students. Throughout the summer, 10 students from Eastdale CI and Bendale Business and Technical Institute worked together to build the rooftop garden and harvest another, smaller space, which the program built in past years at Bendale. “So far I’ve heard a lot of people are enjoying it and are glad we built it up here,” said Brooke Heath, 18, a Grade 12 student at Eastdale who worked in the garden for seven weeks >>>SCHOOL’S, page 9
