Citizen of Year ceremony Saturday

®

Program back at The Ralph Thornton Centre

DRUMMING IN PHIN PARK

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Longtime east-end resident Paul M. Babich will be joining a roster of outstanding local citizens this weekend. Babich, who has called the community home since 1956, is the 2015 Beaches Citizen of the Year. He will be formally honoured for his years of selfless work in the community Saturday. The ceremony will get underway at 1 p.m. at Woodbine Park’s Millennium Garden, which is at the southeast corner of Eastern and Coxwell avenues. Everyone is welcome. Not one to seek recognition or attention for his volunteerism, Babich said he’s honoured to be the 15th annual Citizen of the Year. He also admitted he’s a little surprised he was selected for the distinction. “I’m just an average Joe. It was totally out of the blue and I was totally surprised,” said Babich, who shares the honour with east enders of note Carole Stimmell, Suzanne Beard, Thomas Neal, Anne Butler, Pat Silver, Jean Cochrane, Joan Brent, Mary Christie, David Breech, Arie >>>paul, page 13

FAMILY TIME: Lauren Morrisson and her daughter join the community drum circle during the closing day Thursday of the summer’s Art in Phin Park program.

A new partnership between The Ralph Thornton Centre and the Eastview Toronto Boys and Girls Club has resulted in the reestablishment of an after-school program in Riverside. Starting Tuesday, The Ralph Thornton Centre, at 765 Queen St. E., will be providing 24 children ages six to 12 after-school care from 3 to 6 p.m. “There are learning and leadership components as well as homework help, physical education and healthy snacks,” said Laurette Jack-Ogbonna, the children’s program coordinator for Eastview Boys and Girls Club/Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre. Maria Moutsatsos, RTC’s director of programs, called the new partnership with Eastview “a natural connection” and said the return of after-school programming in Riverside meets a consistent need for it in the community. The after-school program at The Ralph Thornton Centre costs $200 per month with an optional “safe walk” from Morse Street School, at Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue, for an additional $50 per month. Spaces are still available. For more details or to sign up email info@ralphthornton. org or call 416-392-6810. Call 416-392-1750, ext. 315 to learn about other after-school programs in the neighbourhood.
