Each year in Kew Gardens, a single thistle appears in a different location, ready to bloom just in time for the Beach Celtic Festival. This year, it’s sitting just outside the children’s playground area, according to organizer Sandy Graham who started the festival 10 years ago in honour of the death of her mother. “A thistle is like a dandelion in Scotland, so there should be hundreds of them, but there’s one,” said Graham, who grew up in the Beach in a Scottish household. “And I’m pretty sure that’s my mum. The 10th annual festival takes place Sept. 7 and 8 at Kew Gardens. It’s Toronto’s only outdoor Ceilidh, a traditional Celtic >>>FESTIVAL, page 7

Gretel Meyer Odell, a mother of two from the Brockton Triangle who owns Fancy Pants Kids, a local dress-up play clothes company. The premise is the women choose a book and secret location. Participants prepare cos-

tumes and props and then, the day before the StoryMob, the time and location are released. Participants meet and then parade to a public location and act out the tale. “The whole point is that it >>>THREE, page 8
