Beachers rally around dog hit by car JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com It’s been a rough past few days for Lauren, the bichon/poodle, but things are looking up thanks to the generosity and kindness of the Beach community.

On Friday, Sept. 5 around 6:30 p.m., Ivana Santini and her boyfriend Ellijah Bresnahan took her five-year-old dog, as well as a friend’s pup, for a

walk and playtime near the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant at Queen Street East and Victoria Park Avenue.

Santini, who lives near Queen Street East and Blantyre Avenue, was carrying Lauren in her arms and put her down once they reached the grassy area.

Instead of running toward her best friend, Anje, a chow/ shephard/sharpei mix, Lauren ran the other way into oncom-

ing traffic and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

“For some reason, she turned around and ran the other way.

Instantly she got hit. I saw it happen,” recounted Santini, who said she screamed and fell to her knees.

“At that point, I thought I just watched my dog die.”

Santini ran over to her dog, which had a severely injured left front paw and leg.

Several other dog owners and walkers in the vicinity heard the commotion and came to see what had happened, she said.

The driver who hit the dog remained at the scene too distraught to drive.

“I just want him to know I am really sorry. I know he didn’t mean to do this,” said Santini, who doesn’t know the man’s identity. >>>TOONIE, page 11

The 34th annual Terry Fox Run is coming to the Beach Sunday, Sept. 14.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., while the run will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The non-competitive Terry Fox Run is an annual event that celebrates the legacy of Terry Fox and helps raise funds to support his dream of finding a cure for cancer.

Honouring students who fought in Second World War Malvern Collegiate’s Red and Black Society repairing books commemorating students JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Malvern Collegiate, an 111-year-old high school in the Upper Beach, is doing its part to honour those from the school who served in the Second World War, which Canada officially entered 75 years ago on Sept. 10, 1939, declaring war on Germany.

In honour of this historically significant occasion, the Malvern Red and Black Society (MRBS), the east-end secondary school’s alumni association, has recently launched a new project to restore two aging books filled with information and photographs of those from the school who served in the Second World War. “It’s all about honouring the men and women. … It’s got to be done because it’s going to be lost forever if we don’t repair it,” said David Fuller, the MRBS’ 1903-to-1939 decade representative.

The books, a small red one and a large black one, were created in the late 1940s as a way to honour the contributions of those from the school to the war effort.

Second World War wanted to commemorate all students who served,” Fuller said.

“Once the war ended in 1945, they created two books to honour all who served in World War Two from the school. They sent out an appeal to families and students for photos.”

The 504 portraits submitted were assembled into a nine-page, one-ofa-kind, black, leather-bound book embossed with gold titled Malvern Students, Members of the Armed Forces, World War II. “It was all painstakingly taped into a big album and kept in the school’s archives,” he said of the

“big book”, which is now more than 60 years old and has seen better days.

“The tape is falling apart, the pages are splitting open, the bindings are failing and the residue from the tape will, of course, damage the photos if it’s not cleaned off.”

A smaller red book, similar to the honour roll-style one at Parliament Hill, was also put together for Malvern’s Second World War vets.

Assembled and illustrated by the famous late artist Doris McCarthy, the red book was hand bound in the French-binding style by Madeline Bennett.

“It’s not in bad shape, but the binding needs to be repaired,” Fuller said of the tome, which he said is an important part of the history of book binding in Toronto.

In July, the MRBS brought in Beatrice Stock, a professional archival conservator, to evaluate the condition and the repairs needed to both books.

Repairs to the black book have been pegged as $14,500, while those to the smaller red book are at $1,500.

The restoration work is expected to take several months.

The MRBS is aiming to complete the project by May, the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Aside from repairing the two books, the MRBS will also scan all of the photographs and put them onto an online archive. The alumni group is exploring the possibility of obtaining a grant for this endeavour.

“We’re hoping this information online will be a real boon for everyone in the community to research their family history online,” said Fuller, a history buff who has compiled the family tree of hundreds of Malvern students.

“It’ll also be a great resource for the students.”

Donations can also be mailed in to the Malvern Archives Committee, 55 Malvern Ave., Toronto, ON, M4E 3E4. Cheques should be made out to the Onward Malvern Foundation and marked with WWII Big Book on the memo line. The alumni group is also interested in hearing from or about any ‘Malvernites’ who took part in the Second World War.

Vandals steal sword from Malvern Collegiate Great War cenotaph JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The recent removal of a stone sword from Malvern Collegiate’s Great War cenotaph has outraged, shocked and disappointed those who worked so hard to restore the memorial monument three years ago.

“I am very sorry to announce that the Malvern statue has once again been vandalized. Part of the sword has been taken,” Vandra Masemann, vice-president of the Malvern Red and Black Society (MRBS), announced Sept. 5 on the alumni association’s facebook group.

“The police are on the case, and our new video equipment has taken a good record of the incident.

I will post more details when I get them.”

Within hours, scores of MRBS members as well as people from the community expressed their outrage that someone would damage a statue everyone came together to refurbish.

Those sounding off were incensed the circa 1922 monument, which was vandalized with blue hockey tape just days after its November 2011 unveiling, has been damaged yet again.

“Why on Earth do people even think of doing these things? Aside from dishonouring the men it commemorates, what good is part of a stone sword to anybody? Ridiculous,” wrote David Fuller, the MRBS 1903

to 1939 decade representative.

Others called the vandalism “disgusting,” “despicable”, “unbelievable” and “utterly shameful” and said the culprits should receive much more than a slap on the wrist for what they’ve done, even it was just a practical joke.

In a recent interview, Fuller said the “tradition” of pranking the school’s cenotaph has to end.

The cost to replace the sword is $5,000. A timeline for the repairs has yet to be set.

The theft and vandalism happened Saturday, Aug. 23 around 4 a.m. Police report six people were caught on video surveillance approaching the cenotaph.

One individual allegedly pro-

ceeded to climb the statue, which is elevated 15 feet off the ground, and removed the sword.

The suspects are then seen taking cellphone videos and photos of the theft.

While the sword was easily removable, as can be seen in the video at http://goo.gl/PRhhLv, a portion of the historical monument was damaged.

When it comes to representing constituents, it is possible to earn respect – and ultimately build consensus – from a range of viewpoints. That comes from being professional, from being diligent and by listening to all stakeholders.

When it comes to working with political colleagues, Toronto council is made up of 45 elected representatives. The Toronto District School Board has 23. The Toronto Catholic District School Board has 13. An individual running for office is ultimately just one voice at the table. Even someone with the power and resources of the mayor’s office can have their vision sidelined – and we did witness that in this most recent term of council.

Toronto is a diverse city. It has a lot of diverse (and sometimes competing) interests. Being able to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders on a myriad of issues – especially on those where a fundamental disagreement exists – is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one.

To the candidates, be prepared to offer your vision.

Be prepared to back it up with facts and observations. But be prepared to explain a more challenging question: how would you work with your constituents and elected colleagues to push that vision forward.

To Toronto’s voters: Inform yourselves on the issues that matter in your respective communities.

Respect your vote – and make the candidates earn it.

Ford, Tory make better Dungeon Masters than transit planners I never pegged Rob Ford and John Tory as the kind of kids who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) in high school.

Tory is bit old and suave to have gotten into the über-nerdy ’80s roleplaying game, and the only set of polyhedron dice kids like the Ford brothers would have had was the one they’d swiped from the cowering members of the Scarlett Heights D&D Club.

Still, as a recovering Dungeons-and-Dragons über-nerd myself, I’ve got to say: both Ford and Tory would have made wicked Dungeon Masters.

Armed with nothing but graph paper, some pencils and their unbridled imagination, both have come up with wonderful, fanciful maps that’ll keep parties of dungeon-crawlers busy for months – or years.

Of the two transit dungeons, Ford’s is undeniably cooler.

He’s drawn a veritable minotaur’s maze of subway lines on his $9-billion

david nickle the city plan to drive Torontonians underground: tunnels under Finch and Sheppard avenues in Etobicoke and Scarborough, a dank catacomb for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line in Scarborough, and a downtown relief passageway beneath Leslieville and Corktown.

Although Ford hasn’t marked them on the map he sent out last week, one might expect a more than a few pit traps along that one.

Tory’s plan is not technically a transit dungeon – Smart Track is all above ground – but the serpentine rail line wending through Scarborough, downtown Toronto and, if you listen to Olivia Chow, some living rooms in Etobicoke, is certainly sitting on a dragon’shorde of gold.

Tory would have been the kind of Dungeon Master that made it easy

for his players, letting them wander from level to level picking off under-fed goblins and picking up chests of gold and magic swords and rings as they went – ultimately, becoming a very popular Dungeon Master.

It’s all great fun sitting around a table rolling dice, fighting through imaginary dungeons and counting up fanciful gold.

Tentative plans The trouble is that both Tory and Ford’s transit plans are asking voters to roll dice on very real schemes; schemes that are going to cost real money and plough through real neighborhoods.

The plans are probably a step up from the labyrinths that teenage gamers sketch out after they’ve done their homework, but they are nearly as tentative.

This week, when Chow called Tory on the physical impossibility of laying track along the route he sketched through Etobicoke, Tory

admitted that yes, he would dig a tunnel for that portion of his surface subway after all.

Financing questions And neither he nor Ford have provided much comfort in their financing plans – both relying on the unproven tax increment financing model to pay the very significant cost of those projects, and Ford floating a further range of financing mechanisms that a team of experts spent considerable energy definitively refuting during the Sheppard subway debate this past term.

Really, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

This kind of thing has always played much better over a long night in a suburban basement rec room than it does in the real world.

Any über-nerd could tell you that.

Author pays tribute to the movie theatres of Toronto’s past JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com There is little question that today’s films differ greatly from the first moving pictures, but scant attention is typically paid to the sweeping changes made in movie houses over the past 100-plus years.

Author Doug Taylor has captured many of those changes, looking at Toronto’s history as a movie hub, in his new book Toronto Theatres and the Golden Age of the Silver Screen.

The book, which came out of a blog he began writing after retiring from his job as a history teacher (www.tayloronhistory.com), highlights the evolution of theatres from the historic Robertson’s Musee at Yonge and Adelaide streets to today’s megaplexes.

By writing a blog, Taylor was able to share his own theatre-going experiences.

their own stories, or with corrections to details regarding specific movie houses.

As a young boy, Taylor loved going to the movies.

Taylor relied on memories and his own experiences for much of his book, though there was plenty of research involved, some of which surprised him.

One fact he was shocked to learn was that perhaps the most popular movie treat was

not even allowed in theatres until the 1940s.

“Leases specified no popcorn allowed,” he said of film’s early days in Toronto. “It made a mess and because they were showing films continuously, there was no time to clean.”

Taylor laments the loss of many of Toronto’s historic movie houses, though he acknowledges many now choose to download movies.

He said the convenience of home viewing does not come close to matching the wonder of watching films in theatres, and today’s multiplexes pale in comparison to some of the older theatres.

“There’s just something about watching a film with sometimes as many as 1,800 other people, with everybody glued to the screen, sharing the laughs, the gasps and the excitement,” he said.

TUFFing it out underground JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While the red carpets of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) garner headlines, a smaller film festival is ensuring commuters on the TTC get their share of entertainment as well.

Now in its eighth year, the Toronto Urban Film Festival ( TUFF) will see one-minute silent films screened on Pattison One Stop’s platform-level video screens throughout the subway system. The films, submitted by filmmakers from around the world, will provide transit users with a welcome diversion as they await their trains.

“The films will play every 10 minutes on 290 screens across the TTC,” said TUFF Executive Director Sharon Switzer. “We’ll also have TUFF uninterrupted at St. Andrew station, where the films will be playing nonstop.”

free entertainment for commuters, TUFF also provides opportunities for filmmakers to show their work to a large audience.

“It reaches a phenomenally broad audience,” said Toronto filmmaker Wrik Mead, one of three people to earn TUFF Artist Spotlights.

“If you have a film shown at TIFF, you’ll maybe get two screenings with 300 people at each, so you’ll reach 600 people. Here, the possibilities are endless.”

Mead noted while TUFF provides opportunities for artists, the format also provides its share of challenges

for the filmmakers.

“It has to be 60 seconds on the dot – not 61, not 59,” he said. “It’s hard to get a whole storyline in 60 seconds.”

An online series dubbed Too TUFF for the TTC will showcase short films that contain content or subject matter deemed too risqué to air on the public Pattison screens.

TUFF runs through Sunday, and members of the public are invited to vote for their personal favourite films until today.

Leslieville actress performs in Ubu Mayor at Wychwood Theatre JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Leslieville resident Astrid van Wieren can’t say enough about the fun she’s having performing in One Little Goat Theatre Company’s latest production, Ubu Mayor: A Harmful Bit of Fun (also subtitled Politics, Music, Bacon).

“This is one of the (most fun) times I’ve had. We all have a great time,” said van Wieren, who plays the role of Huhu in the three-character play alongside Richard Harte (Mayor Ubu) and Michael Dufays, who portrays Dudu, The Mayor’s brother.

Van Wieren, who auditioned for the role about three months ago,

said she immediately got a great vibe from the show’s playwright, stage director and composer Adam Seelig, and was eager to work with him. A week after her audition, van Wieren was invited to join the cast of Ubu Mayor.

“I knew it was going to be a super-fun project to do. … I was thrilled to sign on,” the 2012 Dora Award-winning actress said during a recent interview.

Van Wieren said performing in the show requires a great deal of energy as all three characters are on stage throughout the 90-minute play, which also features a band and songs. The lines are also quite varied with lots of figures of speech, double speak and repetition, she said.

“It just infuses the whole experience with a kind of energy and absurdity,” said van Wieren, who called the tongue-in-cheek, 14-plus play “the (Mayor Rob) Ford story

and not the Ford story. It definitely draws inspiration from our mayor, but it’s not preachy or telling people how to vote. (Ubu Mayor) is a fun exploration of politics and how ridiculous it can get,” she said.

Ubu Mayor is described as the story of a mayor (Ubu) whose wife (Huhu) is having an affair with his older brother (Dudu). While Ubu wants Huhu to love him again, he also wants what’s best for his city, but both his love and political ideas are foiled by his brother’s schemes.

said van Wieren, who pursued a bachelor’s degree in English and French literature at the University of Western Ontario.

Since completion of the Class EA, development planning for the EBF and NKA precincts has advanced, and projected sewage flows have increased. As well, a number of constraints were defined that affect design options.

Based on these constraints and the increased projected sewage flows, a new servicing solution was identified. The preferred solution now comprises a new gravity sewer from East Bayfront via Queens Quay Boulevard and Small Street, through the North Keating Area along Lake Shore Boulevard, to a new pumping station that would be situated at the City-owned property at 480 Lake Shore Boulevard East, with a forcemain through the Cherry Street rail underpass northward to the newly constructed sanitary sewer on Cherry Street.

The Sanitary Sewer Servicing for North Keating Area and East Bayfront East of Lower Sherbourne Street - Preliminary Design Report by XCG Consultants Ltd. (June 25, 2013) provides specific information on the proposed modifications. The report is available on Waterfront Toronto’s website at www.waterfrontoronto.ca. Hardcopies are available for viewing at Waterfront Toronto’s address listed below.

If you have any outstanding issues with the modifications to the project, please address them to the Waterfront Toronto contact person listed below. Waterfront Toronto will address comments and/or concerns to seek a mutually acceptable resolution.

If concerns arise regarding the modifications to this project that cannot be resolved through discussions with Waterfront Toronto, a person/party may request that the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change make an order for the modifications to the project to comply with Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act (referred to as a “Part II Order”). The request for a Part II Order must be received by the Minister by October 11, 2014, with a copy sent to the Waterfront Toronto contact listed below. Toonie For Our Community formed to help other dogs injured in area >>>from page 1 Moments later another driver who had witnessed the accident yelled for Santini and her friend to bring the injured dog over to his car and within seconds they were enroute to the nearby Beaches Animal Hospital at 2304 Queen St. E. “They took my dog in right away and started treatment,” said Santini, crediting Dr. Natalie Beck for her excellent care. “ T h e re w e re s o m e t o u g h moments. We didn’t know if Lauren would survive.”

Fearing the worst for her pet, which means expensive vet bills, Santini put her pride aside and reached out to the community for help offering to babysit or walk/ board dogs in exchange for donations to help cover Lauren’s $1,000plus vet bill.

She posted the appeal on The Beaches and Toronto Beaches Dog Association facebook groups.

“I thought maybe I’d get $100 or something, which would help,” said Santini, who, within eight hours, learned her bill had been entirely covered by donations from the community.

“I thank every person. I can’t believe how many people have helped,” she said.

“Even when the bill was covered, people continued to donate for future expenses. I’m so overwhelmed.”

Santini, who said this incredible demonstration of generosity has inspired her to volunteer once again this season at St. Aidan’s Out of the Cold program, called Lauren her guardian angel who came into her life at the right time when she was working to get things back on track.

“Lauren just has this amazing aura. People smile when they see her. She’s just so loving,” Santini said, adding she doesn’t know what she’d do without her loving pooch by her side.

In the end, X-rays have determined Lauren does not have any broken bones or other major internal injuries. She does have some significant injuries to her left paw and leg.

“With pain medication and supportive care she should be OK. So far it looks like things are going in the right direction,” said Dr. Mark Dilworth of Beaches Animal Hospital, which in the last year has donated $300,000 in discounted services to various animal rescue groups and the People with AIDS Foundation.

“Relatively speaking, she’s a lucky dog.”

Lauren, which Dilworth described as a “very sweet dog who tolerated everything so well”, will likely require

several weeks of daily bandage changes, but is expected to be just fine.

“Everything that could have gone wrong didn’t” Santini said.

Several Beach residents who heard about Lauren and Santini’s situation and donated to Beaches Animal Hospital for the injured dog’s care are now working on forming a “Toonie For Our Community” initiative to help support area residents in need.

Denise Angus, the administrator of the nearly 4,000-member The Beaches facebook group, is spearheading the project.

“I have seen our facebook group move mountains supporting local business, aiding by sheer numbers on the street looking for lost pets and bringing them home, we banded together with a petition to stop the use of exotic animals at

local events, and though sometimes discussions get heated by differing opinions, at the end of the day, we all would be there for one another in a heartbeat,” she wrote in an email to The Mirror.

“I see our group as a very large kitchen table that seats 4,000 people and everyone jumps in around the clock to discuss what’s on their mind at that given moment.”

Angus went on to say she’s confident the group’s members will be eager to donate a toonie per month to help others in the community.

“The outpouring of support from our community members (helping Lauren) was astonishing, but not surprising, as they’re an amazing group of folks with huge hearts,” she said.
