The Gerrard-Woodbine neighbourhood has a new name. After more than two months of voting, members of the Gerrard Wo o d b i n e N e i g h b o u r h o o d Association (GWNA) decided to call their community Beach Hill. Throughout the summer, the GWNA hosted a three-part Name the Hood contest, starting with residents and business owners submitting a range of names. The group’s members then submitted their vote for @BchRivMirror
the Top 10 entries. From there, a third ballot whittled that number down to four. The winning name was unveiled during the association’s first potluck social last Saturday. “The neat thing about Beach Hill is every ballot it went up,” said Kate Tennier, the association’s founder and coordinator. Tennier said it makes sense to call the community Beach Hill because if one looks down Woodbine Avenue, the Beach is clearly visible.
“It’s kind of a natural name,” she said. Tennier credited Steve D’Souza, Shelly Baboolall and Bill Anderson for running the contest. “It was a lot of work but it was fun and it connected the community. Everybody was talking about it,” she said. “We’re just hoping (Beach Hill) will kind of grow organically. Hopefully people will one day say, ‘I live in the Beach Hill neighbourhood’.”

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Joel Weeks Park, a new two-and-ahalf acre park in Riverside, will be celebrated Saturday with a day-long grand opening festival. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. and includes a parade by the Samba Squad, games and crafts for the kids, live performances, a basketball tournament and a community barbecue. The official opening ceremony and ribbon cutting is set for 2 p.m. Located in the new Rivertowne neighbourhood east of the Don Valley Parkway between Queen and Dundas streets, the new park features an “urban river” theme in honour of the geographical and cultural heritage of the nearby Don River, a mix of active space and places to relax including a new playground, water fountains and other water features, nearly 100 metres of new bench seating, additional lighting, 67 new trees, community garden plots, a large community market and performance space and a community garden. Designed to bring the community together, the fencing came down on the new park Aug. 3. Within minutes, dozens of chil-
dren and teens were on the new playground equipment and using the splash pad. Initially without a name, the new $1.2 million green space, which encompasses the former Joel Weeks Parkette – named in honour of Joel Andrew Weeks, an eight-year-old boy who lived in the community and drowned in a nearby sewer Easter Sunday 1982 – is now officially known as Joel Weeks Park. The City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department announced the name at the end of August. Shelley Wynter-Adman, Joel’s mom, said she’s thrilled the new park will continue to bear her late son’s name. Wynter-Adman said she was upset to learn the city was, until recently, exploring other options for the park’s name. “I felt it was disrespectful to my son, our family and friends to remove his name. It was terrible,” she said, adding the community rallied together years ago to have the local parkette named in Joel’s honour. “This was very tough to deal with, even if his death happened 30 years ago.” Despite the upset, WynterAdman said she was touched to

learn two petitions – one written and the other online – had sprung up recently urging the city to name the expanded park after her son. Wynter-Adman, who has lived in southwestern Ontario for about 10 years, will be at Saturday’s festivities. It’s the first time she’ll see the new Joel Weeks Park in person. For several years, Wynter-Adman lost track of many of her friends from her old neighbourhood until about five years ago when she started reconnecting with people,
including some of Joel’s old pals. “I’m excited and thrilled to see those old friends again. It’s going to be a real thrill to see all of those kids all grown up with kids,” said Wynter-Adman, a nurturing “mom” figure to many from the former Don Mount Court neighbourhood. “There are lots of good memories of how Joel impacted his friends’ lives. Joel was a real connector, everyone’s friend. He cared about others.” Phil San Gabriel attended St.
Ann’s Catholic School with Joel and also remembers his friend as someone who connected others. “Joel was the kind of kid who brought everyone together. He used to organize street hockey games with local kids,” San Gabriel said. San Gabriel said he was concerned to learn the city was considering a new name for the park. “I felt for Joel’s mom. It was almost like a second stab. Even 30 years later, the park should remain named after Joel,” said San Gabriel, who also plans on attending the event. “There’s a lot of history there. There’s no need to rename everything.” Carol Sutton, who tended the parkette’s flowers for 30 years and now does the same at the larger park, also felt the green space should be named after Joel. “I always strongly believed the entire park should be named after Joel...I think it’s a good idea to name parks after every day people in the community, those who contributed to making it a better place.” n Joel Weeks Park is at 10 Thompson St. Call Councillor Paula Fletcher’s office at 416-392-4060 for details about the grand opening event.
Teen’s film looks at Canada’s Tarnished History of Civil Rights JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A Beach teen is one of 30 students across Canada selected as a finalist in an online video contest run by a national non-profit society called Canada’s History. This spring, organizers of the inaugural project, which is supported by Great-West Life and the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Youth Take Charge program, invited 200 students from grades 4 to 11 from across the country to create videos about important historic milestones in their communities. Shaped heritage “Through their efforts, these students have taken ownership of these stories that have shaped the culture and heritage of their communities and our country,” said Deborah Morrison, the society’s publisher, president and CEO, in a release. “They’ve made a connection to the past that goes beyond anything they could learn from a textbook, and we hope it has sparked a deeper interest in history that they explore for years to come.” Canadians were invited to vote online and after tallying the votes, 14-year-old Griffin Murdoch, a recent graduate of Bowmore Road

A film by Beach’s Griffin Murdoch is in the Top 30 of a national history contest run by Canada’s History, a national non-profit society.
Junior and Senior Public School, who now attends Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute, received among the most online votes. He’s now one of only three Ontario competitors chosen to participate in the prestigious history challenge. It all started for Griffin, who lives in the Beach near Queen Street East and Glen Stewart Park, in the spring when he put together a project on corruption in the Underground Railroad and racial discrimination in Canada for his former school’s annual Heritage Fair.
“It’s our school’s biggest history project,” said Griffin, who over the years has made a number of stopmotion videos with his brother, Oakley. After doing well at the school level, Griffin went on to participate in the regional heritage fair a month later in Scarborough. In May, he was invited to submit a video to the new Young Citizens contest. “I had two or three weeks to put together a film about my history project,” said Griffin, who spent the
first weekend writing the script for his film and credits the Ontario Black History Association for helping him with his research. “It was crazy and so much fun.” One of the featured characters in Griffin’s four-minute digital documentary, titled Freedom? Canada’s Tarnished History of Civil Rights, is Patty Cannon who, back in the 1800s, was the leader of a gang that lured and kidnapped slaves and free blacks and sold them to plantation owners in the southern United States. For this portion of his film, Griffin interviewed Canadian writer/author, researcher and curator Adrienne Shadd. Refused a seat “(Patty Cannon) became one of the main focuses in my project and is also one of the two main focuses in my film,” said Griffin, whose movie also looks at the story of Viola Desmond, a black woman from Halifax who, in the 1940s, attempted to enter a movie theatre in another town but was refused a seat on the floor level because of her race. Dragged out of the movie house by a police officer and the theatre’s manager, Desmond spent a night in jail without being informed of her rights and was eventually fined and charged with tax evasion for
being one cent short of the amusement tax. “She was the only black person in that court,” said Griffin, adding that Desmond lost her case and was ordered to pay $26, which is the equivalent to about $340 today. Desmond, who rallied the support of the black community and unsuccessfully tried to sue the Government of Nova Scotia and appeal her conviction, spent her final days living in New York City in the 1950s. The short film, narrated by 15 of Griffin’s former Grade 8 classmates, also looks at Canadian discrimination laws in the 1940s. The teen, who said he might like a future as a film producer or director, found out late last month he’s a finalist in the Young Citizens contest. A panel of judges is now in the process of reviewing the 30 video submissions and will announce the Top 6 winners soon. Those six final Young Citizens will then be invited to Ottawa to take part in the Governor General’s History Awards in December. Their videos will be showcased at the National History Forum, an annual discussion of issues and opportunities facing the Canadian history community. Visit www.YoungCitizens.ca to view the Top 30 entries.

Terry Fox Run: sustain a legacy T
here’s a lesson for volunteer organizations to observe when it comes to the Terry Fox Run. The event has grown enormously over its 32 years and is now a worldwide undertaking – one that even goes beyond the traditional Sunday run in multiple locales. For example, there’s now a separate National School Run Day. There’s also an intriguing new initiative making its debut this year. Canadian university students are being urged to get involved with Terry’s Cause on Campus. Among its goals is “to inspire future generations with Terry’s story of courage, selflessness and hope.” So far, our view nine events are confirmed, including one in Toronto. You can honour Students at University of Toronto will participate in a run the memory of bringing students from all three of its campus locations (down- Canadian hero town Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough) to its Scarborough campus. While most of the university events are taking place Sunday, Toronto’s is scheduled for Oct. 3. It’s a fitting expansion for a number of reasons. Terry Fox was a first-year student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. The connection of this event to a university campus is an obvious one. Just as importantly, by directly engaging university students – our leaders of tomorrow – Terry Fox Run organizers are making a shrewd, sustainable investment in ensuring the continuation of Fox’s legacy. It also signals renewal. Many organizations run the risk of becoming irrelevant once the generation that created those organizations passes on. It’s a sad, but undeniable reality; volunteer organizations need to consider a form of succession planning if they hope to be sustainable. And there’s reason to hope. Our young people do volunteer. In a Statistics Canada report released earlier this year, titled Caring Canadians, Involved Canadians, nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians between the ages of 15 and 24 volunteered at least once in the previous 12 months. It’s the highest volunteer rate of the six age groups cited in the survey, and well above the provincial rate of 47.7 per cent. Participating in the Terry Fox Run is an excellent way to honour the memory of a bonafide Canadian hero. It always has been. It’s encouraging to see that growth continue and that investments are being made to ensure the continuation of Fox’s legacy. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Recently, the Federal Court of Canada said it is legal for a blogger to quote and link to an online news article in a post. So if you copy a news article headline and summary – with a link to the full version – and post it to your blog or website, you haven’t violated Canada’s online copyright laws. Online content costs owners time, resources and money to create and publish. A blogger or web publisher should still follow a few basic rules when using other’s content. At the very least, the date, name of publication and title (with a link) should be included in the body of a blog post. A direct quote should include a full citation to it at the bottom of a blogger’s article. A Google Internet search makes it easy to find an image to embed within a blog post. But if an image or logo is trademarked, a blog owner should obtain permission from its owner before including it in their own blog article. Tom Wolfer
Ford’s political career will survive court case Rob Ford was never going to get out of that courtroom unscathed, and by the time Clayton Ruby was finished with him on the stand last Wednesday, the mayor of Toronto was pretty much on the ropes. At the end of it, our mayor emerged as a seemingly careless steward of the city, wilfully ignorant of the laws he had sworn to uphold, a passionate defender of the social benefits of high school football but disinterested in almost everything else. It’s not a surprise. If Ruby had been permitted to by Judge Charles Hackland, he might have been able to introduce a laundry list of stories with which we are all familiar regarding Ford’s behaviour. Ford’s lawyer Alan Lenczner successfully argued that questioning on those matters would do
THE CITY

more than embarrass the mayor. It might also have embarrassed a great many voters – because let’s face it: no one who voted for him could say they weren’t told exactly the kind of guy Ford was. Now, he is facing the real prospect of losing the job to which he was elected. He is accused of contravening the Ontario Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he spoke and voted on the floor of council in February on a matter in which he had a financial interest: a requirement by Toronto Council
that he repay $3,150 to 11 lobbyists who donated to his football charity while he was a councillor. Unless Hackland is persuaded by Lenczner’s suite of finely honed legal arguments – council had no authority to order the repayment; the mayor made an error in judgement in good faith; Ford’s interpretation of the Conflict of Interest Act (which he admitted to never having read) is correct – he will have little choice but to remove the mayor from office. Of course, there will be another election for the mayor should that happen. If the sentence comes down without also imposing a restriction preventing him from running, it could be that Ford becomes a candidate in the byelection called to replace him. It could be that he would
prevail in such a byelection on the well-worn narrative of victimhood: Rob Ford, the candidate who was removed from elected office by a judge for the crime of helping schools in poor neighbourhoods have football teams. If the judge imposes restrictions, count on him running again in the first election he can. And give him good odds of winning that one. Because the time has come to face facts: when it comes to Rob Ford, there is a large constituency of voters who don’t want to face facts when it comes to their candidate. Their love appears to be unconditional. n David Nickle is the Mirror’s City Hall columnist. Contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto. com

‘The Beach has been really good to me. ...It’s just about bettering the community.’ Thomas Neal, Beach Citizen of the Year
Hockey loving A past board member at Community Centre 55, Neal has volunteered his time at countless local fundraising and community events over the years. He’s also been known to moonlight as a certain Jolly Old Elf, when needed, during the Christmas season. Neal, who grew up in a hockey-loving family of seven boys, is known in the Beach community for creating and maintaining the natural outdoor skating rink in Glen Manor
Park for the last 10 years. Years ago, he brought his oldest son, Braden, to the local park for a skate only to find the city had stopped flooding the neighbourhood skating rink due to cutbacks. Along with a few of his neighbours, Neal decided to take on the challenge of creating a natural ice rink himself. He’s continued to maintain the local outdoor rink for the last decade with the help of his “go-to” guys, Brock Grant and Michael Ross. “I grew up with an outdoor rink. My dad used to create one in our yard when I was a kid,” Neal said during a recent interview. “It’s a labour of love. I’m down there in the early morning and evenings. The kids really enjoy it.” Neal said he doesn’t give of his time or money to gain any kind of recognition. “The Beach has been really

good to me. I’m just one of many people behind the scenes. It’s just about bettering the community,” said Neal, who, on a professional level, has sat as a volunteer member on several Toronto Real Estate Board committees and has helped numerous residents with their property tax reassessments. He said he hopes his sense of volunteerism motivates others, especially his three children, to do the same. He also credited his partner, Sheila Ream, for her unwavering love and support.

He’s set to be inducted into the Beach Walk of Fame Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at Woodbine Park’s Millennium Peace Garden at the southeast corner of Coxwell and Eastern avenues. All are welcome to attend. “It means a lot to me. I certainly do not think of myself as doing anything out of the ordinary. ... I just do my little part. More hands make the work lighter,” said Neal, a father of three who works as a local realtor, of the honour. “People ask me to do stuff and if I can, I do it. ... It is a real honour (to be the 2012 Beach Citizen of the Year) and to paraphrase a lot of people; I stand on the shoulders of giants.” Over the years, Neal has been involved in countless community initiatives from serving as a founding member and vice-president of the nowdefunct Balmy Beach Residents Association to being a volunteer coach for numerous hockey,

Leslieville resident plays special role in Beach Terry Fox Run
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
The annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research is especially meaningful for 10-year Leslieville resident Lisa Vanlint. “The Terry Fox Run is a special way to remember my parents. It’s a great way to channel my grief into something positive,” said Vanlint, whose father, Gerry, died of esophageal cancer in 1998 at the age of 60 and mother, Ruth, died from melanoma of the sinus in 2004 at the age of 56. Growing up, Vanlint remembers her mom and dad taking part in the Ottawa edition of the annual Terry Fox Run. “It used to be my parents who were the big fundraisers,” said Vanlint, adding her dad believed so much in the Terry Fox Foundation that he participated in the fundraiser’s 10km run in 1997 while undergoing cancer treatment.
After her father’s death, Vanlint said her mom seriously took up the cause until her death. Nine years ago, Vanlint and her brother, Michael Berger, picked up the torch doing their part to raise awareness and funds for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation. Sibling rivalry
Since then, Vanlint and her partner, Jo, have raised more than $65,000. Her brother with the support of his family has also raised about the same amount. “We like to use our sibling rivalry for good to see who can raise the most,” said Vanlint, who contacts each of her supporters individually. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s something I like doing. It’s something that’s important to me.” This year, Vanlint has been invited to serve as the starting runner for
the Beach event. Before the walk begins at 9 a.m., she’ll share a few words of encouragement as well as advice about the importance of early cancer detection and healthy living. “Incredibly honoured and a little overwhelmed” to take on this special role, Vanlint said she’ll also take a moment to remember those who have died from cancer as well as honour the “super survivors” who are currently battling the disease in her speech. This year, Vanlint is starting a new tradition by wearing a special T-shirt during the Terry Fox Run inscribed with the names of the loved ones of her supporters who have lost their lives to cancer as well as those who are presently fighting the disease. The local edition of the 32nd annual Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday. The non-competitive event, which has no pre-registration or
registration fee, goes from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration opens at 8:15 a.m. at the Woodbine Beach Bathing Shelter, which is along the Beach Boardwalk, just east of Coxwell Avenue. Participants, who can run, walk, wheel or inline skate their way along a 10km course as well as shorter lengths, are only asked to fundraise as much money as they can for the cause. Terry Fox, who died on June 28, 1981, is best known for his crossCanada Marathon of Hope, which he ran on a prosthetic leg. His goal was to raise a dollar for every Canadian for cancer research. Fox was forced to end his marathon near Thunder Bay, Ontario after running more than 5,000 kilometres. n Visit on.fb.me/TPpvkD or www. terryfoxrun.org for details.

Close down the cottage with confidence There's that recognizable chill in the air. Fall's back, and it’s time to shut down the cottage for the winter. You spend so much time and money on your family cottage, that it only makes sense to do all you can to protect it. By being as thorough as possible, you'll not only keep out the weather and little critters, but you'll also keep your property insurance costs down by reducing the chance of damage over the winter. Keep in mind that on average closing your cottage can take up to four weekends. Aim to be finished by the Thanksgiving weekend because the cold and frost tends to arrive earlier in cottage country. Here's a brief check list to help you stay organized: • Take a good look around your entire property. Identify anything that may need an emergency repair before you close for the season and make sure there's time to get it done. A good example is roof repairs because snow and ice over the winter could make the problem much worse. • Make your cottage burglar-proof. Ultimately,
you want to your place as uninteresting as possible. If you have a gate at the entrance of your driveway, chain it up. Tidy up outside, packing up all outdoor furniture and removing any fire hazards. Inside, close your blinds, curtains and/or shutters. • Clean out your kitchen and fridge. Canned food can expand and possibly explode over the winter and other food items can attract mice. Leave your cupboards spotless so that you won't come back to any surprises in the spring. If you'd rather not bring it all the way back to the city, consider throwing an end-of-season party for your neighbours or donate it to a local food-bank. • Turn off the water, electricity and in some cases the natural gas. Be sure to drain the pipes to prevent freezing and cracking. Pouring environmentally friendly non-toxic antifreeze (used in RVs) into your toilets is a good idea if you're unable to drain them completely.

Approval for port land plans Pinewood Studios announces $40 million expansion DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The scaled-back plan for the new port lands revitalization sailed through Toronto’s executive committee Monday, buoyed by news that Pinewood Studios is embarking on a $40 million expansion of their waterfront movie studio as a show of confidence in the plan. “A year ago we weren’t considered a precinct, we weren’t considered an area for redevelopment and rezoning and now we’re part of the plan,” said Alfred Romano, a partner in the $100 million studio. “I can honestly say that if we didn’t have that kind of encouragement, our board might have said, just wait.” Romano made the comments coming out of the vote on the new port lands plan, which staff from the city and Waterfront Toronto put together over the past year. The $1.9 billion plan envi-

sions a redevelopment of the port lands north of the shipping channel over 30 years, using a variety of revenue tools and public-private partnerships. Changes The revised plan was requested by council after an attempt by the mayor’s brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, to re-imagine the port lands as a playground with a giant Ferris wheel, megashopping-mall and monorail failed before it got to the floor of council. This plan speeds up development and also makes some changes to the old plan under former mayor
David Miller – particularly along the east Bayfront and with regards to naturalizing the mouth of the Don River. Romano was one of several deputations coming to weigh in on the new plan. Better transit He agreed with many of the deputants who said the naturalization of the Don needed to be speeded up. But he said that the plan needed to have a stronger transit component. In particular, he argued the city needs to commit to an LRT into the port lands rather than a busway. The new studio addition will cost about $40 million and totals 140,000 square feet – 40,000 of it comprising two new soundstages and 100,000 office space. Construction is already underway on the studios, which add to the 250,000 square feet already on the site, constructed during David Miller’s tenure.

I am Jack Layton book pays tribute to leader JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Denise Andrea Campbell was moved and inspired by the late NDP leader Jack Layton. The inspiration was so great, in fact, it led her to create a book detailing the impact the former NDP leader had on Canadians and Canadian politics. The book, I Am Jack Layton, came about as what Campbell calls “a series of happy accidents.” Campbell was working in city hall when the true impact Layton had became clear to her. “When the Jack tributes started outside city hall, I came outside and I was struck by the number of people writing in chalk about what he meant to them,” she said. “I had always been moved by Jack, but I was really moved by the outpouring of grief.” She started photographing the written and drawn tributes and posted a few on Facebook, which quickly garnered the attention of friends. From there, she began to put together what eventually became her book. “I started to put a book
Denise Andrea Campbell
together, but it was only for my own use,” she said. “In February, I showed it to my partner who said ‘This is phenomenal; you can’t keep it to yourself.’” I Am Jack Layton includes photos of the chalk drawings, Layton’s public viewing and funeral and testimonials from people, who shared what Layton meant to them and how he changed their lives. “People certainly talked about being inspired by how Jack lived his life and did his work based on positivity,” Campbell said. “He focused on the issues and got things done.” She never worked with Layton while at city hall, but said she was inspired by Layton’s dignity, honesty and class.
“There were so many things he stood for in terms of causes and that was certainly inspiring, but it was more than that,” she said. “It was how he worked at trying to build communities, find common ground and build understanding between people.” I Am Jack Layton outlines the impact the politician had on everyone from students to politicians. Campbell began interviewing people for that portion of the book in June and was taken aback by how many people found inspiration in Layton. “(Bramalea Gore Malton MP) Jagmeet Singh talked about how Jack came to him several times when something seemed insurmountable, and Jack just told him ‘If what you’re doing is right, don’t let people stop you,’” she said. Campbell self-published the book on www.blurb. com and it is now available in hardcover, softcover and ebook at www.blurb.com/ bookstore/detail/3508487. For each hard copy sold, Campbell will donate $2 to the White Ribbon Campaign, a campaign Layton helped start to end violence against women.

School’s back on at Danforth Tech JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com School’s back in at Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute after a three-alarm fire last April forced the closure of the local high school’s north and west wings and the relocation of dozens of classes to three nearby schools. After months of scrubbing and repairs, all 1,150 students and their teachers returned to classes at Danforth Tech Tuesday, Sept. 4. The only area of the school that remains off limits is the main floor drama and music rooms, which are currently in the midst of being renovated/modernized and are set to reopen by the new year. “We want to take the time to do it right,” said Chris Broadbent, manager of occupational health and safety for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). While a light smoke odour still permeates the hallways and classrooms most impacted by the April 25 fire, he said the air quality in the school’s north and west wings continues to be tested and is within the standards for indoor environments. “Since that day we’ve been moni-

toring air quality. There’s a little bit of a lingering smell in that one hallway,” said Broadbent, noting the cost of repairing and cleaning the school as well as replacing damaged materials and relocating classes is in the “millions of dollars.” “The environment is safe. Students or staff or anyone entering the building is absolutely safe.” Construction workers are still on
site during the day and some items are still being moved in and out of the school at this time, he said. “The repairs are still ongoing.” Late last week Principal Denise Martins gave the TDSB’s Director of Education Chris Spence a tour of the renovated and cleaned up areas of the school. “We have restored everything but the two directly affected areas
where the fire’s point of origin was,” said Martins. Martins thanked the school community for their patience and support. “The students were doing amazing when we were in the sharedschool model. Our No. 1 priority now is to make sure teachers and students feel safe and secure in their school,” she said, adding since the new school year has started, she’s noticed an extra sense of gratitude from students thankful for the work that has been done over the summer to repair their school. “It was a huge group effort to get ready for September...I think it was a real pulling together of our community – our students, our teachers and our parents.” Danforth Tech hosted its welcome back assembly last Friday. The school’s commencement ceremony, which usually takes place at the end of the school year, was pushed back to Oct. 4 so graduates could receive their diplomas at the school. At this time, no arrests have been made in connection with the fire. Anyone with any information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
Queen East workshop Wednesday The third community workshop on the Queen East Visioning Study will be held Sept. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Toronto Fire and EMS Training Centre, 895 Eastern Ave. Hosted by third-party facilitator, SWERHUN, this consultation is the final one before a report goes to Toronto and East York Community council in November. Everyone is encouraged to get involved in the process to develop a future vision for Queen Street East from Coxwell Avenue to Neville Park Boulevard. A stakeholder advisory committee consisting of Ward 32 residents, merchants as well as representatives from local business service providers has also been created for the study. This group has met on three occasions in recent months. The study will focus on the built form and physical character of Queen Street East within the study area.
