SHUT-EYE? Do you snore loudly? Do you feel tired even after a full night’s sleep? You may have sleep apnea. Read our special report on Page 3 for more about this potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
Two crowdfunding campaigns have been set up to help support the partner and four young children of Kiesingar Gunn. The 26-year-old man was fatally gunned down early Sept. 11 outside the Forty2 Supperclub, which is in Liberty Village. Gunn was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital but died several hours later. His donated organs have saved five lives. At the time of the shooting, there was an altercation involv-
ing some people Gunn knew but police do not believe he was the intended target. Police are asking anyone who may have been at the scene of the crime or anyone with videos or photos of the incident to contact them at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477. Gunn leaves behind his partner Naomi Kewakundo, a longtime east-end Toronto resident, and their three children, Felicity, 6, Terrence, 5, and Mila, 1. He is also the father of one-year-old daughter named Chloe from another relationship. >>>FUNERAL, page 14

hat do you do when a solid eight hours of sleep still leaves you feeling exhausted and listless in the morning? For millions of Canadians suffering from sleep apnea, that’s a daily occurrence, and while sleep apnea itself may not be deadly, its side effects can be severe, particularly when they add up over weeks, months or years. Sleep apnea is an obstruction of the trachea during sleep, which stops breathing and causes fits of wakefulness. In serious cases, people can be jolted awake more than 60 times an hour, and while the body returns to sleep quickly, the condition prevents deep sleep. “Your sleep becomes mincemeat,” said Dr. T. Douglas Bradley, director of the University Health Network Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Toronto General Hospital Sleep Research Labs. “It’s like sticking a cork down your throat, so you struggle to breathe because your airway’s obstructed and you can’t get any air in your lungs. That goes on for a minimum of 10 seconds and can last up to a minute and a half. Eventually the asphyxia wakes you up and when that happens, there’s a sudden increase in the tone of the muscles in the throat, so the throat opens, usually with a loud snore.” Sleep apnea affects some 10 per cent of the population in North America, with men three times more likely to suffer from the condition. Age is a factor – the average sleep apnea patient is 45 years old – and obesity and inactivity are strong contributing factors. Bradley noted that sleep apnea is disruptive not only to the sufferer, but to their partners as well, as those suffering from the condition snore loudly through-

Above left, Dr. Doug Bradley of Toronto Rehab shows off a new Bresotec device that will allow people to test themselves for sleep apnea at home. out the night. The effects on the sufferer, however, can be debilitating. “You feel like you’ve been hit by a 10-ton truck when you get up in the morning, often with headaches, feeling like you’d like to go back
to bed again,” he said. The ensuing sleepiness throughout the day can lead to a three to fourfold increase in the incidence of getting involved in motor vehicle accidents and industrial accidents.
Beyond that, sufferers tend to toss and turn throughout the night and can suffer a loss of shortterm memory and libido. There are also potential long-term cardiovascular health effects, with sleep
apnea sufferers seeing a two to fourfold increase in the incidence of high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. “When you fall asleep, your cardiovascular system relaxes just like the muscles
in the rest of the body, so your blood pressure goes down, your heart rate goes down, oxygen consumption by the heart goes down because the heart’s resting,” Bradley said. “If you keep waking somebody up, you get surges of sympathetic (nervous system) activity that raise the heart rate, raise the blood pressure and increase the pumping activity of the heart at a time when it should be resting.” Potential cures for sleep apnea are varied, depending on the severity of the case. Bradley noted that prevention is the greatest cure – by maintaining a healthy body weight and keeping active, the risk of developing the condition is greatly reduced. Other simple solutions include sleeping on your side or having your tonsils removed if they are particularly large, though these only serve to help some patients. For many, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks are the best treatment. Worn overnight, the face masks blow air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. “This controls sleep apnea, but it doesn’t cure it,” Bradley said. Securing an appointment in a sleep clinic to get diagnosed can be difficult. To help with the backlog, Bradley worked with a group of partners to form BresoTec, a company that has developed a home testing kit. A face mask – the BresoDX – captures sleep sounds in the patient’s home through a microphone and patients can simply mail in a chip containing the recording for analysis. “It makes diagnosis easier and we can look at a patient’s full night’s sleep in less than five minutes,” Bradley said. good night’s sleep – it’s something many of us take for granted. But for millions of Canadians who suffer from sleep apnea, a restful sleep is hard to come by. With 10 per cent of the North American population impacted by this sleep disorder, someone you know may be experiencing the side effects of sleep apnea, which can be severe and debilitating. As Dr. T. Douglas Bradley, director of the University Health Network Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Toronto General Hospital Sleep Research Labs, noted in this week’s Metroland Media Toronto special report, “You feel like you’ve been hit by a 10-ton truck when you get up in the morning.

Studies show men are three times more likely to suffer from the condition with age playing a factor as well as obesity and inactivity. But all is not doom and gloom with the report highlighting potential cures for sleep apnea depending on the severity of the case. Simple solutions include sleeping on your side or wearing a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which blows air through the nose and into the back of the throat to keep the airway open. But as it is with most health-related issues, Bradley iterated that prevention is the greatest cure. If you’re looking for another reason to exercise, maintain a healthy body weight and keep active, you can add greatly reducing the risk of developing sleep apnea to the list.

Ford book may lead to unintended consequences Wa t c h i n g D o u g F o r d announce that Harper Collins will soon be releasing another Ford book – Ford Nation: “the most exciting book that this country’s ever seen when it comes to politics– I was struck with a pang of sympathy. The sympathy is not for my colleagues in the press or the politicians at city hall, who Doug Ford promised would be spared no indignity in Ford Nation’s pages. My heart really goes out to the writer – or possibly team of writers and editors, as Ford was vague about the specifics – who were contracted by Harper Collins to pen this tell-all authorized sort-of biographical memoir of Rob and Doug Ford’s adventures at the helm of Toronto. It made me think of Tony Schwartz. He did a similar job three decades ago, for New York real estate mogul Donald Trump, when he wrote “The Art of the Deal on Trump’s behalf. He wasn’t
precisely a ghost writer – he shared the byline with Trump, right there on the cover, and also split the royalties and the advance. By all accounts, he did good work for good pay. Maybe too good. Earlier this year, Schwartz, through an interview in The New Yorker magazine, expressed “deep remorseâ€? for helping Trump build his reputation as a touch-of-gold entrepreneur, which in turn helped him rise through and above the others for the Republican nomination in 2016 and win the thing. Maybe he’ll win the presidency, and if he doesâ€Śâ€œI genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization,â€? Schwartz was quoted saying. Thank heaven there are no nuclear codes associ-
ated with the jobs that Doug Ford made clear he might just be seeking – the mayoralty of Toronto, the premiership of Ontario, or the office of Prime Minister of Canada. But Doug Ford left no doubt that the book, subtitled “Two Brothers, One Vision, is at the very least coincidental with his re-entry into Canadian electoral politics. When it’s released Nov. 22, he promised to criss-cross the country ostensibly to drum up sales but also to meet people. As to when he will reveal his political plans? Sometime within the next year, Ford promised. It’s hard to say how this strategy will play out for Ford. He does have a base and a profile – the fact that he was able to summon half of Toronto’s news media to his house in Etobicoke for nothing more specific than a “special announcement Tuesday morning is testament to that. And he does have an image
to rehabilitate: as much as the Ford Nation base of support continues to percolate, a winning majority of Torontonians rejected him for mayor in part because of the way he and his brother comported themselves while in office as councillor and mayor respectively. Will a book tour do the job? Promoting her autobiography My Journey certainly didn’t help Olivia Chow hold onto her early lead in polls in the 2014 mayoral race. On the other hand, a well-penned, well-timed book can do a lot to turn a troubling narrative into a triumphant one – particularly as the most troubling elements recede further into history. And that can open the door‌ Well, it can open the door to all sorts of things. Just ask Tony Schwartz.

Drilling platform in Lake Ontario linked to Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant work joanna lavoie jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Contrary to what some people may be thinking, a drill rig located in Ashbridges Bay just east of the Leslie Street Spit in east Toronto is not drilling for oil. “It’s a platform drilling operation,” said Frank Quarisa, Toronto Water’s Director of Wastewater Treatment. Soon to wrap up, it’s part of an in-depth geotechnical investigation for a new outfall shaft planned for the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant (ABTP). Since July, crews have been working offshore 24/7, drilling a series of bore holes up to 84 metres below Lake Ontario to learn about what they’ll be working with when the new tunnel for the treated and disinfected water going into Lake Ontario is built. Quarisa said the goal is to have a clear profile of the soils and bedrock under the lake
bed as well as the groundwater. “That data will go into the (outfall project’s) final design,” he said, noting notices were sent out to the public about the work back in the spring. People may have also seen a service boat for the drilling crew in recent months. Some geotechnical work may still be done along the shoreline between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays until early October, Quarisa noted. Once drilling is done, the boreholes will be backfilled with cement/bentonite grout or a monitoring well will be installed to monitor groundwater levels. The wells will be decommissioned when the monitoring is complete and the study area, which is up to 3.5 kilometres out into the lake and basically follows the alignment of the future outfall, will be fully restored to its original state. Talk of replacing the outfall at the Ashbrides Bay Treatment Plant has been
ongoing for nearly 40 years. Back in the early 1990s, an environmental assessment for the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant finally began but it wasn’t until 2008 that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment gave its approval to install UV disinfection for the facility as well as a new outfall into Lake Ontario. The current outfall for the plant is upwards of 70 years old and has served the plant through three expansions, noted Quarisa. It currently has insufficient capacity and is reaching the end of its service life. “It’s undersized for the kind of flows there,” he said, adding after studying various alternatives the best option determined was a new, larger and longer wastewater outfall to meet both current and future needs 50 to 100 years from now. Anyone with comments, questions or concerns can email abtpnlc@toronto.ca or call 416-392-2990.

Funeral for Kiesingar Gunn planned for this Sunday >>>from page 1 His mother Evelyn, siblings Keyshoya, Davide, Davyne as well as his grandparents Ian and Mona, and his aunt Jennifer and cousin Julian are also mourning the loss of their son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. Danielle Ballard-Nixon, Kewakundo’s aunt, has set up a page on the You Caring website at https://www. youcaring.com/naomikewakundo Titled ‘Help Naomi and her kids recover from her loss’, she is aiming to raise $10,000 to pay for funeral expenses and to set up a trust fund for Gunn’s children. “I just think it’s a great thing we can do to help (Naomi),” Ballard-Nixon said late Monday afternoon. “She’s a single mom right now... and anything will help.” In a message on the page,
“
Being able to help others live or live fuller is the one light in this time of inexplicable grief and darkness.
Gunn and Kewakundo’s families are asking people to consider the gift of organ donation. “Being able to help others to live or live fuller is the one light in this time of inexplicable grief and darkness,” the note read. “The family thanks everyone reading this and is grateful for any gift, small or large, to help them honour Kiesingar and to provide for the children now that their dad is gone.” A second crowdfunding campaign, Support for family of Kiesingar, has also been set
up on Go Fund Me The campaign, which is aiming to raise $10,000 and can be found at https://www. gofundme.com/2wae2cnb, is also raising money to help Gunn’s partner and his four young children. “No donation is too small, and we hope people can find it in their hearts to help this young family. Kiesingar’s entire family will forever live in appreciation of your kind support,” the message on the page read. The Mirror reached out to the Go Fund Me campaign’s organizer, Shelley Baker, for comment but did not hear back by press time. Gunn’s funeral is this Sunday at 2 p.m. at McDougall and Brown Funeral Home Scarborough Chapel, 2900 Kingston Rd. at Neilson Avenue. Public visitation will take place before the service at 1:30 p.m.

Malloy said he felt “honoured” and “privileged” to work with students and a dedicated team of administrators, teachers and support staff across the system. “I look forward to continuing to build partnerships with parents and our communities, and remain committed to improving student achievement and well-being for all students,” he said in a statement. Malloy’s vision for learning includes reducing barriers to achievement so that all students can be successful and emphasizing the shared leadership of all employees to support schools and improve student achievement at the TDSB.

Toronto District School Board (TDSB) chair Robin Pilkey announced last week that Interim Director of Education Dr. John Malloy has been appointed to the role on a permanent basis. Since joining Canada’s largest school board in January of this year, Malloy has introduced a board-wide Learning Centre strategy that moves resources closer to classrooms and improves school responsiveness to student, parent/guardian and community needs. “After nine months with the TDSB, it became clear to the search committee, trustees and senior staff that John Malloy is the director we need now and in the years ahead,”

Options for Davenport says it joined an advisory group for the Davenport Diamond rail bridge, which it opposes, to make sure the voices of its members are heard. The group, which boasts 1,500 members, has long opposed Metrolinx’s plan to replace the Diamond rail crossing with a bridge, having commissioned its own study to point out the flaws it sees in the plan. That hasn’t stopped Metrolinx from proceeding with the project, which received official approval in August from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to proceed. The group says having a seat at the table will allow it to continue to voice community concerns. The advisory group next meets Tuesday, Sept. 20. association is cYcList FriEnDLY wtrucking

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT the Ontario Trucking Association released a statement, saying truckers need to respect all road users. The statement came right after questionable comments from Ron Barr of the Greater Ottawa Truckers Association who said, in an interview with an Ottawa radio station this week, that bikes should not be “equal” to trucks. His comments were in response to the news criminal charges were filed against an Ottawa trucker in the death of a cyclist. usE is incrEasing on ttc wPrEsto
Presto use on the TTC is steadily growing, says Metrolinx The TTC is promising to fully phase out all traditional fares such as tickets and tokens in favour of
the reloadable fare card by mid-2017. Currently, 33 stations are Presto-enabled where there are 30,000 taps a week, and rising. More than 50,000 Presto taps are coming on TTC buses, 908 of which have readers installed. PLans raLLY at toronto citY HaLL wttcriDErs
The transit advocacy group TTCriders is planning a rally to protest anticipated budget cuts to the transit commission. The TTC is facing a 2.6 per cent cut to next year’s budget, and the group fears such a move will hasten a “race to the bottom” for riders forced to pay higher fares for declining standards of service. The rally is scheduled at city hall Wednesday, Sept. 28, the same day as a TTC board meeting. Rahul Gupta is Metroland Media Toronto’s transportation and infrastructure reporter.
