Terry Fox Run: Woodbine Beach to Heritage plaque installed host 35th annual Marathon of Hope at Kew Williams House The 35th annual Terry Fox is coming to Woodbine Beach on Sunday.

Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m.

The five- and 10-kilometre walk/run takes place from 9

a.m. to 12:30 p.m. People are also welcome to cycle, inline skate and use wheelchairs along the route.

Those interested in taking part in the event, which honours the late Terry Fox’s Marathon

of Hope, should Sunday meet at the Woodbine Beach Bathing Station.

The Beach is set to get a good scrubbing this weekend thanks to two Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup events.

The first cleanup will be held on Saturday, Sept.

19 starting at 10 a.m. at Woodbine Beach Park, 1675 Lake Shore Blvd. E., which is between Coxwell and Woodbine avenues.

Those interested in taking part should meet at the picnic shelter to register and pick up free clean-up supplies.

The cleanup will conclude at noon followed by a free lunch.

The second cleanup is set for Sunday, Sept. 20 along the Eastern Beaches from Kew Gardens to the Balmy Beach Club.

Those interested in taking part should meet at the Leuty Lifeguard Station, which is located at the foot of Leuty Avenue, for 10 a.m.

Clean-up materials will be provided along with snacks and refreshments.

Participants are reminded to check the weather and dress accordingly and to wear closedtoe shoes.

The Great Shoreline Cleanup is a conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre and WWF-Canada.

It is one of the largest direct-action environmental programs in Canada.

Martin Goodman Trail re-routed to Leslie Street during construction work The Martin Goodman Trail, south of Lake Shore Boulevard East to Commissioners Street, has been temporarily re-routed onto Leslie Street as crews prepare for landscaping around the perim-

Workshop on fraud protection for seniors hosted by Toronto police

A workshop about seniors and fraud will be hosted by 55 Division’s Fraud Office on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Titled Scammed!, the free event will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the WoodGreen Health Thursday and Wellness Centre, 721 Broadview Ave., lower level, south of Danforth Avenue.

Some of the topics of discussion will include tips to prevent fraud, how to recognize fraud, and how to avoid scams.

The Ralph Thornton Centre was host to an all-candidates meeting Tuesday evening to help voters in the Toronto-Danforth riding sift through the most pressing issues facing Canadians leading up to next month’s federal election.

Elizabeth Abbott of the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party, Julie Dabrusin of the Liberal Party, Craig Scott of the New Democratic Party, and Chris Tolley of the Green Party were in attendance to affirm their political platforms and reiterate their party goals.

The Conservative Party has not yet named a candidate in the riding.

As the evening got underway, the audience of about 100 was reminded the meeting was not a debate, but rather an opportunity for people to ask questions and hopefully get answers from the candidates, said Kerry Bowser, executive director of the Eastview Neighbourhood Centre, who served as the evening’s moderator.

“I’m hoping to hear why each of these people think they are the person I should vote for. I want to know how Canada can be put back on a more progressive route and stop being so nasty,” said resident Maggie Redmonds of Riverdale.

“I’m here to meet the candidates. I’d really like to hear some-

The first portion of the meeting gave each candidate five minutes to make opening statement.

Scott reminded the community of his election in the March 2012 byelection as an NDP Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth.

“We are in trouble in Canada as the public discourse has shifted towards cost,” said Scott in his discussion with the social determinants of health group.

Scott underlined the issues of Bill C-51, the need for an affordable national childcare program, proportional representation in Canada’s electoral system, the possibility of a coalition government, and climate change as the topics greatly affecting Canadians.

“You can’t fix the environment.

You have to fix the problems around the environment,” said

“The Green Party has been seen as a one issue party but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” he said.

In her opening remarks, Abbott spoke on what she called “the inconvenient truth of factory farming and animal abuse.”

Admitting to a low chance in winning the majority of votes, Abbott focused on the issues of factory farming, animal abuse and the affects of the pharmaceutical industry on the public, through mass consumption.

“Don’t vote for me, vote for the wretched animals,” she said, adding there is lack of discussion in the mainstream parties on the issue of animal rights.

“There was no word about animals in their platforms. I want to do it because I think it really matters,” Abbott said.

Dabrusin highlighted her community involvement and her family-focused platform in her opening speech.

Income inequality, childcare, transit, affordable housing were the major topics driven home by the Liberal candidate.

“People should not have to make the choice between healthy food and a roof over their heads,” she said.

Following the opening

remarks, community members divided into groups according to the issues they were most interested in: environment, income inequality and income security, social determinants of health including housing, and international affairs and human rights.

The candidates visited the groups to discuss the topics with the constituents.

During her discussion with the income inequality discussion group, Dabrusin recounted her experience as a working mother and her struggles of finding affordable childcare with her own children.

“It’s frustrating that there are families struggling with the same issues a decade later. We need to work to help working families,” she said.

Tolley spoke with the voters interested in human rights, and criticized what he called Canada’s aggression-based approach to international affairs, stating people in the West must take responsibility for the repercussions of such an approach.

The Green Party candidate proposed a more peace keeping and aid distribution approach to international affairs and reiterated the party’s goal to open the refugee system to allow 25, 000 Syrian refugees.

“One of the pillars of the Green Party is peace,” said Tolley.

Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research.

But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing.

Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community.

It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you.

The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day.

While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Terry’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues.

For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved.

Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself.

“It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

Taking a stroll down TIFF’s memory lane Favourite flicks from the very first festival

t’s hard to believe this is already the 40th edition of TIFF. Time sure flies by when you’re star-gazing.

In honour of the anniversary, I thought I’d take a look at my top Canadian and American entries from the inaugural event, known way back when as the Festival of Festivals. w One League Under The Sea Talk about gala openings.

TIFF took the movie industry by storm by introducing the first-ever prequel. It was the imagined foundation for the classic 1954 adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Alas, the NHL’s efforts were thwarted by a furious Moby Dick after he was turned down for the role of commissioner. w Let The Games Begin Moviegoers fondly remember Moby as the number one fan favourite around town.

The media highlight of the festival featured the candid superstar, who was out one night with his posse and was overheard venting to the piano player at the bar at the Windsor Arms Hotel.

Whined the disgruntled Moby, “I’m sick and tired

of being typecast as a whale. I don’t even want to act anymore. What I really want to do is direct.

She encouraged those in attendance to join the recently revived Beach and East Toronto Historical Society.

Stuart Slessor, who serves as the parks supervisor for the Eastern Beaches, said the Kew Williams Cottage at 30 Lee Ave. is a symbol of the pioneers, the founders of the Beach community.

“The cottage represents an era so different and times that were so simple,” he said Saturday afternoon, calling the Kew Williams cottage “truly one of Toronto’s hidden gems.”

The ceremony concluded with a brief statement from some of Kew and Bertha Williams’ descendants, one of whom is great-granddaughter Anne McArthur.

“This is a historical plaque for my own family history,” she said. “It’s very awesome.”

Olympic decision shows civic prudence The roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference. If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence.

It was a good fit.

We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games.

Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and there are better things with which to occupy our time than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a massive international Olympic event.

This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September, meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community

david nickle the city representatives, speaking with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters.

Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic. Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot resist.

I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect. Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments

and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.”

If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in agreement.

Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and we ought not try.

On this, Tory and Ford seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party.

Located at 268 Rhodes Ave., just south of Gerrard Street East and west of Coxwell Avenue, the lot is being refurbished by the Toronto Parking Authority (TPA) under its Green P+ program, launched in March 2014 with the aim of transforming lots set for refurbishment into community hub spaces. With input from local businesses, residents and community leaders, the goal of each project is to reflect the neighbourhood it serves.

“We’re making lots into community hubs, more usable spaces for the community and meeting places,” said Marie Casista, the TPA’s vice-president of real estate, development and marketing, during a recent interview.

Green P+ projects are entirely funded by the TPA through its annual budget.

been upgraded into Green P+ community hub spaces. Some of the upgrades have included public art installations as well as other supports that have helped business improvement areas (BIA) and community groups host special events in the new lots.

On Rhodes Avenue, crews have been working since Aug. 17 to install permeable pavers, new asphalt, greening features along the perimeter including native plants and more trees, a new AC power outlet, better lighting, new bike rings, and new benches where possible

along the north side of the lot near the laneway.

In March, the Toronto Parking Authority invited local politicians and stakeholders including those from the Gerrard India Bazaar BIA and the Gerrard East Community Organization to provide input on the project.

The Green P+ lot on Rhodes Avenue is expected to reopen in mid-October. In the meantime, motorists can use nearby Green P lots at 151 Hiawatha Rd. and 1141 and 1167 Eastern Ave. Visit http://parking. greenp.com for details.

community Bake Sale funds school in Haiti wBella’s The sixth annual edition of Bella’s Bake Sale is coming to the Upper Beach on Sunday.

Hosted by 10-year-old Bella Black, a Grade 6 student at Adam Beck Junior Public School, the event is a Free the Children fundraiser.

Bella, who has pledged to build a school for every year she is in school, has so far raised enough money to help build six schools: three in Kenya, two in Haiti and one in India.

and identity theft ring An alert regarding an ongoing mail theft ring has been issued by Toronto police’s 55 Division fraud office.

In a Sept. 10 statement posted on social media, police said they had arrested a woman at the end of June in connection with this investigation.

It is alleged the woman, along with a number of other people, stole mail from open mailboxes daily during daytime hours.

The thieves, who are usually on bikes and are sometimes dressed like couriers, would be paid in either drugs or cash.

Some of the stolen

items included driver’s license and credit card renewals, letters from the Canada Revenue Agency, cheques or anything with details about the homes’ residents.

One victim continues to deal with impersonation fraud and account takeover fraud, investigators said.

Police are urging residents to consider purchasing locked mailboxes.

In a city staff report to be debated at next week’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) meeting, a pilot project on Bloor, between Shaw Street and Avenue Road, is recommended as part of next year’s plan to install 41 kilometres of new bike lanes citywide.

The recommendations must be approved by PWIC and then city council as a whole.

The report also recommends boosting next year’s budget for bike lane installations by approximately $4-million to $13.6-million, coming from the city’s transportation services department.

TTC EYES ANOTHER HIKE FOR 2016 wFARE

The TTC is looking at a $95-million shortfall for next year, and this week the transit commission’s budget committee recommended boosting the city subsidy or imposing a fare hike for 2016
