GerrardART aims to revitalize Little India
TWISTERING THE DAY AWAY...
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A unique community art project is in the midst of transforming an entire block of buildings in the Little India neighbourhood into a colourful mural. Spearheaded by the Riverdale Hub, a non-profit organization that promotes community economic development through social enterprises, transformative art and community-based revitalization projects, the GerrardART Project has been made possible thanks to a $17,000 grant from StreetARToronto, formerly known as the City of Toronto’s Graffiti Transformation Program. “It’s such an exciting project, a completely different vision in terms of what social services means,” said Nuzhath Leedham, executive director of the Riverdale Hub, calling the initiative “empowerment at the neighbourhood level.” “It’s revitalization through street art. It’s the first project of its kind. There’s nothing like this.” For several months, a steering committee consisting of representatives from the Riverdale Hub and its sister organization, the Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre, as well as the Gerrard East Community Organization, the Gerrard India Bazaar Business Improvement Area, local faith groups, social service organizations, area residents as well as councillors Mary-Margaret McMahon and Paula Fletcher came together to work out the details for the project and put together a grant proposal. Late this spring, the committee >>>BLOCK-LONG, page 16

Local historian Gerald Whyte Beach resident receives Queen’s Jubilee Medal pens book on Riverdale streets Charles Edgeworth Book designed so people can use it for a walking tour
proud of his team JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com After three years of work, the Riverdale Historical Society (RHS) has published a 100-page book featuring stories about the origin of the names of 100 streets in Riverdale. Authored by 25-year area resident, Gerald Whyte, Streets of Riverdale: An Illustrated History offers detailed historical and cultural information on a street-by-street basis from the time the downtown east neighbourhood was a tract of land east of the Don River flooded by Lake Iroquois to present day. “We’ve tried to give little stories about each street, when it was formed and how it came to be. I think people will find it interesting,” said Whyte, who also serves as RHS’ president. A retired education administrator at the University of Toronto, he said the book contains never-before-seen photos as well as stories and information the local historical group didn’t even know about. “I was afraid we wouldn’t have enough information, but we actually had too much. ...I learned a great deal,” he said, adding members of the Harris family, a prominent local family from day’s gone by, were especially forthcoming with their archives and photographs, many of which appear in the book. “(Streets of Riverdale) is designed so people can use it for a walking tour.” Over the years, Whyte has contributed to several publications and has penned countless reports and papers on local history. Streets of Riverdale is his first time authoring his own book. Whyte said he’s always wanted to write a book, but just never took the time to put pen to paper. “I’ve now discovered how much

time it takes to do it. It was lots of fun and I had an awful lot of luck with it. I really enjoyed the experience,” he said of the endeavour. He said the primary purpose for publishing Streets of Riverdale: An illustrated History is to raise funds to help pay for new heritage plaques throughout Riverdale. Over the years, the Riverdale Historical Society has hosted several garage sales and other fundraising events, but decided to try its hand at publishing a local history book to raise money for its efforts. “We have a whole series of plaques in the planning and we need to raise money for those,” said Whyte, adding the goal of the plaques is to make people aware of local history. Streets of Riverdale: An Illustrated History is set to be launched Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Bowling Club House, 450 Broadview Ave. All are welcome to attend. taken part in a range of domestic operations including coastal patrols on the east and west coasts. He’s also had the opportunity to travel to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti and has taken part in a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) exercise in Belgium. A lieutenant by rank, trained as a maritime surface and subsurface warfare officer, Edgeworth is also experienced in the management of personnel and is currently serving as the operations officer at HMCS York, a Canadian Forces Naval Reserve Division on Lake Shore Boulevard West, just east of Exhibition Place. His responsibilities include the management of a department of 65 naval communicators, naval combat information officers, maritime engineers and intelligence officers. “It’s a challenging role that makes me strive to do better. Being in the navy reserves is totally different than my day job,” said Edgeworth, who has lived near Queen Street east and Beech Avenue for about a year. The one thing he said he especially enjoys about being in the navy is the camaraderie among his military family as well as the chance he’s been given to represent Canada and give back to his country.

‘We’ve tried to give little stories about each street, when it was formed and how it came to be. I think people will find it interesting.’
Beach resident Charles Edgeworth doesn’t have much time to himself these days, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. A married father of a one-year-old daughter who works as a corporate banker by day, Edgeworth is also a 20-year member of the Royal Canadian Navy reserve, spending about one evening a week, one weekend a month as well as two full weeks a year on training and skills development. He’s also a recent recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, an honour bestowed on Canadians from all walks of life for their commitment to their communities and the county as whole. The new commemorative medal was created to mark the 60th anniversary of her Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne and is a way for Canada to honour her for her service to this country. Earlier this month, Edgeworth was among eight people of his 250member division at HMCS (Her Majesty’s Courts Service) York to be awarded the distinguished honour. “I think it’s an honour to receive (the award). It recognizes the hard work of the team I’m a part of. Overall, I’m just one person,” said Edgeworth, who was selected for the medal based on his military merit. His part-time career with the Royal Canadian Navy began when he was a university student in his hometown of Victoria, B.C. Joining the navy reserve was a good part-time job that offered fulltime hours from May to August as well as tuition reimbursements. Completing his MBA in Montreal before moving to Toronto about five years ago, Edgeworth has an aunt and uncle who both served in the Royal Canadian Navy and from a young age he had a good understanding of what was involved in joining the service. Over the years, Edgeworth has

Back to school; back to transit issues
N
ot only are students across Toronto back in school, but all the politicians who represent the city – municipally, provincially and federally – are packing their fancy new lunch boxes and pressing their clothes to get back to business. And there is one issue that should speak loudest for Torontonians – transit. And not just public transit, but cars, bicycles and every other way we get around the city. The very nature of public transit is one where individual neighbourhoods and geographies can’t be individually satisfied, but necessitates working toward a common vision and plan. In these pages, we have called for a national transit strategy – not just ad hoc funding that bends with the wind. We have called for the provincial government to take back running the Toronto Transit Commission, alleviating our view the strain on municipal coffers. And to that end, we’ve called on Time to think everyone who sits on city council to stop arguing about a tran- of a solid sit vision and commit to one so transit solution Toronto can be the world-class city it can be. School’s in - traffic’s bad
All you have to do is travel the streets and highways of Toronto to see how busy they have become since school has started up again. The summer, a respite for many, has come to an end and the crowds of students – from primary to university – are now on the streets, and with them come many parents in their vehicles. Summer vacations are over so those Torontonians (and to greater extent Ontarians as a whole) are also back on the streets, highways and public transit slowing everything down. With these increased volumes, everyone across the city should keep up the pressure on all levels of government to treat the transit issue as more than just a one-off discussion. Getting from one end of the city to the other has become noticeably difficult – downright impossible some times, and that’s without adding the recent difficulties when the Gardiner Expressway is closed for the weekend, the Toronto International Film Festival bringing more people into the city core and various festivals shutting down streets. It’s easy for politicians to lose track of the transit issue when dealing with their individual portfolios and concerns, but if we hope to one day have a solid transit solution for such a large and growing city, we must keep their political feet to the fire and make sure the topic never disappears from their radars.

I used to do sales at a church outdoor event. Theft occurred often so I had two volunteers to watch people to curtail this. Garage sales benefit the person who sells and the person who buys. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. A lot of these items used to go to landfills. Garage sales help the environment. Some people can’t afford to pay retail prices on items, but can afford garage sale prices. That is one of the reasons garage sales are so popular. Some people are lucky enough to find valuable antiques. I do my sales to benefit the DCAT chorus, a non-profit group that sings to veterans and seniors in nursing homes. Most of my volunteers are seniors. Garage sales help many people and they are fun. They are also a great way to meet a lot of interesting people. Linda Carscadden
Community housing report stands chance of success With all the gridiron drama unfolding in Mayor Rob Ford’s life, it’s often easy to forget the City of Toronto has a life beyond the mayor’s, and often beyond the mayor’s reach. On Monday, Councillor Ana Bailao provided evidence of that when she unveiled the report into dealing with the Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) backlog of repairs and maintenance. The report, titled Putting People First, is something of a repudiation of one of Ford’s early triumphs this term when he led the wholesale gutting of the TCHC board of directors and put councillor Case Ootes in place as a oneperson board. As a councillor under former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller, Ootes had been a sharp
THE CITY
david nickle
critic of the TCHC’s stock of more than 600 singlefamily homes. His view had been if TCHC’s apartments and townhouses were crumbling, the city shouldn’t be putting up tenants in large and sometimes quite valuable pieces of real estate in some of the city’s nicest areas. With Ford’s support, Ootes set the wheels in motion for a sell-off of that housing – in the course of it, potentially displacing subsidized tenants across the city. When it came to council earlier this year, councillors
balked – and in a compromise set up the task force and put Bailao in charge of finding other ways to raise the $751 million needed to erase the housing company’s backlog. The new plan is much more modest. It would sell off at least 55 houses, and no more than 155 homes (with up to 100 going to tenants themselves) and look elsewhere for the money for the repair. Those tenants who would be displaced in the much more modest sell-off would be relocated to other city-owned homes in their home neighbourhood, minimizing displacement. The housing company would otherwise look to remortgaging, bond-funding and simple efficiencies to dig into the repair backlog. Really, inasmuch as it might fit with his world
view, all of this is tangential to the mayor’s agenda. In making the appointment of Ootes to run the housing company, Ford really gave an old ally an opportunity to eradicate one of his pet peeves while on council. The solution that came forward – essentially a one-time influx of an insufficient amount of cash, coupled with the removal of stock that might be seen as a little too fancy for the sorts of people who end up in affordable housing – was something council as a whole couldn’t stomach. Bailao’s report, focussing as it does on the wellbeing of even those tenants lucky enough to live in The Beach, stands a better chance. And so it is that the city trundles on, absent either the person or the politics of its self-immolating mayor.

Toronto’s blue bins will be
getting a little more crowded by the end of the year, as the city’s solid waste department gets ready to allow homeowners to toss out plastic clamshell containers, most often used for food.
Currently, residents can put out plastic bottles, jars, tubs, jugs and plastic lids. But until now, the city hasn’t been able to find a market for the rigid plastics, nor has it had a means to sort them.

Visit MP’s office to take in art memorial for Layton JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A special memorial canvas in honour of the late Jack Layton is currently on display at the constituency office of Beaches-East York MP Matthew Kellway. The project, which came about after Layton’s death in August 2011, is a way for constituents to add their remembrances and expressions of hope and thanks to the former Toronto-Danforth MP and NDP leader. The large canvas is designed to be a tangible way for people to express their thoughts, emotions about Layton and his death. “When I saw the outpouring of love for Jack in the form of chalk art, poetry and prose at Nathan Phillips Square, I thought we should provide an opportunity here, closer to home, for people to share,” Kellway wrote in an email
to The Mirror. He went on to say a lot of people wanted to talk about Jack, but were reluctant to commit their feelings to writing. Instead, he said many took up the opportunity and put pen to canvas. “One of the interesting and lovely things is that people of all ages – from kids to the elderly – have shared their feelings. “And those feelings – though expressed differently – all describe a loving and lovely man who is missed greatly,” Kellway said, crediting artist Nathalie Vachon for linking all of the expressions so beautifully. In recent months, Vachon, who has lived in the Upper Beach area near Kingston Road and Victoria Park Avenue for more than 10 years, took on the task of creating artwork, specifically an Asianinspired cherry tree motif, to
embellish the canvas. An artist, author and storyteller, Vachon said she was happy to take on the project as Layton was someone she admired for his integrity and vision, and appreciated his support for environmental causes and the arts. “I’m happy to be able to do something to honour that,” she said, adding she was touched by all of the thoughtful messages on the tapestry. “It was hard not to be in tears reading it all.” ■ The Jack Layton memory canvas will be up at Kellway’s local office, 155 Main St., at Gerrard Street East, until Thursday, Oct. 18. People are welcome to add their messages to the piece, which is set to be presented to Layton’s widow, Trinity-Spadina MP Olivia Chow, on Friday, Oct. 19 during a Harvest Supper fundraiser.

Harris as Commissioner of Works for the City of Toronto is being presented until March 2, 2013 at The Market Gallery, 95 Front St. E., Second Floor. The exhibition – titled The Water Czar: R.C. Harris Works for Toronto, 1912-45 – chronicles the 33-year career of the Toronto public works legend as the head of the city’s works department through archival photos, maps and plans and rarely or never-before-seen artifacts.

out his career. Harris, who became Toronto’s works commissioner following a series of water-related scandals that led to the resignation of the city engineer, was appointed not necessarily for his technical acumen but for his administrative ability. Before long, he developed a civic vision where public works were viewed as the cornerstone of greater Toronto. During his three-decade career, Harris tackled a number of the city’s water challenges, notably developing bridges and making the harbour more accessible, obtaining a secure supply of tap water and getting rid of the city’s wastewater. The circa-1941 water
treatment plant at the foot of Victoria Park Avenue and Queen Street East, which currently provides 45 per cent of Toronto and York region’s water supply, is named in honour of Harris’ many accomplishments. The Market Gallery, a program of the City of Toronto’s Cultural Services that presents exhibitions dedicated to Toronto’s art, culture and history and offers educational programs for schools groups and adults, is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit www.toronto.ca/culture/the_market_gallery.htm for more details. - Joanna Lavoie

Block-long GerrardART mural will be completed by mid-October >>>from page 1 learned the funds had been granted for the GerrardART Project. The next step was to hire
two professional Torontobased mural artists, Adrian Hayles and JAH, who were both tasked with envisioning the design as well as handling
the painting of the massive mural that spans from 1322 to 1330 Gerrard St. E. An unnamed donor contributed free paint to the
project. The colourful mural design is influenced by the South Asian heritage of many of the area’s merchants and includes Islamic calligraphy and iconic images typically associated with henna designs. The inclusive piece also includes colours, images and symbols such as fish and bamboo representative of some of the Chinese retailers along the strip. “The starting point is (the area’s) South Asian identity, but it includes all groups that make up the community,” said Leedham, adding a team of students from OCAD University is also involved in the project exploring landscaping possibilities for the two ends of the block at Glenside Avenue and Highfield Road. Mosaic ar tist Anna Camilleri has also been retained to craft a colourful tile art piece of the Riverdale Hub’s new logo outside its home at 1326 Gerrard St. E. Leedham said GerrardART serves as a major starting point for the economic redevelopment of the area,
Photo/COURTESY
Artists, including head artist JAH, right, participate in painting a large mural spanning from 1322 to 1330 Gerrard St. E. in the Little India neighbourhood. JAH had some of the children watching involved with the painting of the peacock recently.
adding she hopes the initiative will draw more retailers to the neighbourhood and get people excited about shopping and visiting the community. She also said the goal down the line is to expand the aerosol art mural concept eastward to Coxwell Avenue. “Wouldn’t that be lovely?” Leedham said, adding the overall goal of the project is to create a new local attraction that will bring even more people to the area.
The GerrardART Project is expected to be completed by mid-October. Dulux Paints provided all the paint for the mural. A grand opening celebration with music, dancing and food will take place then. Details about the grand opening will follow in the coming weeks. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating can call the Riverdale Hub at 647-2603006 or email gerrardart@ riverdalehub.ca
