“It’s been really, really well received by the community,” said Denise Angus, the organization’s administrator who also runs the nearly 4,000member The Beaches facebook group.

“We’re going to absolutely move forward with this.”

From Sept. 12 to 15, Pippins Tea Co. Inc., The Ecig Flavourium and VetsToronto took part in a trial run to see if the project was something the community would embrace.

In just four days, dozens of residents made their way to the local retailers and donated $122.

but to collect over $100 in four days is absolutely grand,” Angus said, noting she’s been contacted by at least 20 business owners interested in getting involved.

Angus said in the next few weeks she’ll be approaching even more businesses along Queen Street East and Kingston Road about being drop-off points for the initiative, which she said is all about people giving a toonie a month and collecting a significant amount of funds.

So far, there have been two Toonie For Our Community meetings. The next one is set for the end of October.

A volunteer committee is now being formed.

Several other toonie-related fundraising ideas are also in the works including an art show with a $2 entry fee, a $2 tea day at Pippins Tea Co. Inc. and $2 nail clippings at

VetsToronto.

Toonie For Our Community is also currently working to become its own not-for-profit profit organization. “ To o n i e F o r O u r Community could feasibly change lives.

“There really is no limit,” Angus said.

“Come January 2015, I think we’ll be in a position to start helping people. I’m excited to watch it unfold.”

Toonie For Our Community was formed after Ivana Santini put out a call for assistance to help cover vet bills after her dog, Lauren, was struck by a car Sept. 5.

While the community mobilized to help the woman, residents have come together to ensure there’s a reserve fund in place to help.

Makeover for Little India storefronts JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Nine storefronts on the southwest side of Gerrard Street East from Coxwell to Rhodes avenues are in the midst of receiving a pastel-coloured makeover.

Coxli Ltd., a group of entrepreneurs who came together about two years ago, is behind the revitalization project, which kicked off in mid-September and is expected to be complete before the end of the year. “(Coxli Ltd.) is looking at improving the neighbourhood by beautifying it,” said Elizabeth Yiannoulis, an independent project manager retained to work on the revitalization project.

She said the goal of the makeover, which involves replacing signage and painting the exteriors of the storefronts, is to help storekeepers by improving the “architectural esthetics” of their shops.

“We are looking to improve the curb appeal, and ultimately investment in the community,” she said, noting apartments above the stores are also being renovated during this project.

“As we move forward, it’s getting more and more exciting.”

Dawn Chapman, the owner of Lazy Daisy’s Café – one of the stores in the strip – said she’s excited about the possibilities for the area in light of the upgrades.

Spreading awareness of oil pipeline activity needs to be a priority

t travels underground right across Toronto, beside busy roads, near the backyards of homes and an elementary school, has been around for almost 40 years and yet many residents have no idea it even exists.

However, all that is quickly changing for the Enbridge oil pipeline known as Line 9.

Environmental groups are concerned with a federal decision earlier this year to allow bitumen oil, known as tarsands oil, to be pumped through the pipeline.

In today’s edition, residents can learn more about Line 9.

Environmentalists say the bitumen oil is heavier than the light crude oil Line 9 presently carries, and the consequences of a spill due to a breakage in the line could be dire, especially since the line crosses Humber, Don and Rouge our view the rivers.

The environmental concerns Torontonians are heightened by the age of the which was built in 1976, and must be part line, by the fact that bitumen oil is of planning considered more corrosive than light crude.

Enbridge, however, rejects the notion that bitumen oil will be flowing through Line 9. A spokesman said light crude will be the bulk of what Line 9 carries as the refineries that take the oil are not “heavy” refineries. Whether the capability of those refineries changes to deal with bitumen in the future remains to be seen.

As part of the approval by the National Energy Board (NEB) to allow bitumen oil through the pipeline, Enbridge is carrying out work related to pipeline integrity and the creation of an emergency response plan.

And it’s in this emergency plan that Toronto residents need to be especially involved.

Toronto councillor David Shiner said the City of Toronto is working with Enbridge on emergency response plans, but much of what needs to be done is under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Enbridge has filed a plan with the NEB and says it is waiting for a response before making the details public. When those details become public, residents must be given numerous opportunities for input on the emergency response plan. Given the thousands of homes and roadways located close to Line 9, residents’ awareness of Line 9 and an understanding of what to do in an emergency must become a priority for Enbridge, the federal government and Toronto.

Fringe mayoral candidates battle to bring issues forward We are a free country – or at least a free enough country to allow anyone with citizenship, some cash and a birth certificate showing they’re out of short-pants to run for public office.

When it comes to actually holding that office... well, we’re not quite free enough to let just anybody do that. Fame, money – even infamy, is a prerequisite.

The mayor’s city-councillor brother Doug Ford, who entered the mayoral race last weekend with a hasty Saturday afternoon canvass and a cobbled-together platform, was polling 23 per cent before he even cleared his throat for his first scheduled debate Tuesday. John Tory and Olivia Chow both rode into the campaign with public CVs sufficiently massive to attract money with an almost gravitational force.

Those other candidates?

The 60-odd who registered to run in the municipal election for the city’s top job?

Ari Goldkind, a criminal lawyer with a progressive platform and a genially aggressive style, has been complaining for months about the fact that debate organizers won’t invite him to the table to test his ideas against Chow’s and Tory’s and Ford’s. On Monday night, the Forum poll finally found he charted.

Morgan Baskin, an articulate young community activist, has been running a youth-oriented campaign from the fringes, but rarely had a chance to debate issues.

There are others – dozens – and each and every one of them, I suspect, will be a little miffed that I didn’t name check them in this column. To those, I offer no apology: absent ideas or coherent expression of some, a candidate deserves

every inch of the fringe they inhabit.

But candidates like Goldkind and Baskin are a different matter.

Both are attempting to inject reasonable and thoughtful alternatives into the debate, all while wearing appropriate business attire (something by no means a given among the fringe candidates).

They don’t have CVs (at least not the kind that get you elected mayor), they aren’t famous... aren’t even infamous.

But they seem like they have a plan.

It’s kind of sad in one way, seeing these welldesigned campaigns and earnest candidates ignored.

In another way, it’s frustrating to watch these two candidates seeming to do nothing so much as squander their time in the limelight.

It’s tough to blame debate organizers to want to limit the roster to those candidates who have a shot at victory.

It’s tough to blame voters who turn away from the well-dressed stranger on the street, when there’s so much at stake for the whole city, in choosing between seasoned and frankly electable political leaders.

The fact is that the way our political season is structured, it’s very difficult in our imperfectly free country for intelligent and useful ideas to work their way up from the bottom.

That’s not to say they can’t, but it’s a tough row to hoe, having to sell both one’s controversial notions and one’s own untested credibility at a time when all eyes are looking elsewhere.

Here’s hoping that Goldkind and Baskin and other fringe candidates dreaming impossible dreams in October find some energy for advocacy and outreach between November and the next election.

Beacher Sandy Graham says Scotland will try for independence again JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com While the outcome may not have turned out as she had hoped, 40-year Beach resident and proud first generation Scottish-Canadian Sandy Graham says it shows Scotland cares about its future and unique identity.

“It was a close race and won by a small margin. Families were divided in their votes,” Graham said of the vote, which ended in 2,001,926 votes for the ‘no’ side and 1,617,989 votes in favour of seceding from the United Kingdom.

“So m e o f m y re l a t i ve s i n Edinburgh were dead against it – especially the older ones who

feared for loss of their pensions.

Other friends in Glasgow were disappointed and deflated after the loss.”

Graham said the close vote, not to mention the unheard of voter turnout of 84.6 per cent, shows “young people believe with a passion that they will continue their mission and eventually win.”

“Scotland fought hard this time and I do believe they will go by the motto of ‘if at first you don’t succeed try, try again.’ The failure to gain a

yes vote could fairly well be Scotland’s finest hour since William Wallace,” she said of the Scottish man who rebelled against Edward I. Graham, who lives near Queen Street East and Glen Manor Drive, was glued to her TV early Friday morning awaiting the outcome of Scotland’s independence referendum.

“It’s never been such an even split. … It’s going to be a close vote,” she said last Thursday several hours

before the final result of the vote was announced.

Graham has been keeping a close eye on the independence vote in Scotland, which joined England and Wales in 1707, and said Scots are passionate about their heritage and identity when considering the possible outcome of the Sept. 18 independence referendum.

“I think Scotland has had enough,” she said, pointing to land and voting restrictions on Scotland as well as the high taxes Scots are paying to essentially promote the British monarchy.

“I reckon it’s very similar to Quebec.”

“Over there, Scotland just gets eaten up,” she aid, adding growing up she often heard stories and sang songs about Scotland’s struggle for a stronger identity and freedom.

Graham said many Scots from the older generation are wary of separating from the United Kingdom.

“They’re terrified and what it means for the economy, but the younger Scots are passionate about making their own country,” she said, admitting she’d like to see Scotland form its own independent nation.

Balmy Beach Rugby finish regular season in first The Balmy Beach Rugby Club’s top men’s team was nearly perfect throughout the recently completed regular season in the province’s men’s league.

And now with the playoffs set to start Saturday they’ll

need to actually achieve perfection to become McCormick Cup champions.

A 65-29 win over Stoney Creek Sept. 20 at home at Tubs and Gee Gage Rugby Field capped their league leading record at 11-1.

Balmy Beach last won both the league and playoff championships when they pulled off a rare perfect season in 2011.

Their lone loss this season was close – 26-24 to Brantford on Aug. 15.

“The last person is moving out Saturday and Sunday of this week,” Mallins said Tuesday afternoon.

While it wasn’t easy to find quality, affordable housing for those who called the rooms above Jilly’s home, he said it was all worth it.

“It was a battle worth fighting and WoodGreen was very helpful,” Mallins said, noting Streetcar, which is behind several mid-rise condo projects in the city’s east end and downtown core, would be paying for a one-year follow-up program for the tenants to ensure they’re doing well in their new homes.

“It was hard work but we found everybody new homes that are better than the ones they had.”

Mallins said the decision to transform the old Jilly’s into a boutique hotel and restaurant was what the majority of the 1,000-plus people who took a recent survey about the future of the circa 1891 Riverside landmark wanted.

“That was the focus of the responses,” he said, adding constructing a hotel-restaurant was also one of Streetcar Developments’ “preferred options” from the outset.

At this point, ERA Architects have prepared basic line drawings.

“So far it’s been well received but it’s hard to get excited when the drawings are so preliminary,” Mallins said, noting the priority is to bring the building back to the good state it was in 80 years ago.

“We want to have unique decor that will go along with the heritage attributes of the building, to bring something authentic to the east end,” he said.

At this point, Mallins said the plan is to use the heritage building’s ground floor as a restaurant/bar/ cafe with about 55 hotel rooms and a rooftop patio.

To get there will require extensive renovation work to address major structural issues. Late last year, the city’s buildings department issued an Emergency Work Order for immediate temporary structural measures in order to secure the building.

The city’s heritage department will need to support the project, which will also require approval from the Committee of Adjustment for the rear addition.

On July 8, Toronto council voted in favour of designating 704 Queen St. E. under the Ontario Heritage Act. This formal heritage title identi-

fies the property’s heritage values and attributes, and enables city council to control alterations to the site, enforce heritage property standards and maintenance and refuse demolition. The property was listed on the City of Toronto’s Inventory of Heritage Properties in 1975. heritage conservation district The Broadview Hotel, which was built by businessman Archie Dingman and initially called Dingman’s Hall when it first opened in 1891, is a stately building that features intricate sun, moon and weather-related motifs in its terracotta brick inserts, which were built with bricks from the Don Valley Brick Works.

The HCD designation allows city council to protect and enhance the special character of groups of properties in an area, whose character is established by the overall heritage quality of buildings, streets and open spaces.

Enbridge spokesperson Graham White said Line 9 has been misrepresented by those opposed to it, and it is not a tar sands oil pipeline.

“Line 9 will carry primarily light oil as it did prior to the planned reversal. The destination refineries are ‘light’ refineries and do not have significant capability to refine heavy products like bitumen oil,” he said.

However, Enbridge has permitted shippers to transport different oil blends, which includes heavier grades such as bitumen.

The 38-year-old pipeline could start transporting the heavier grade bitumen as early as December, say some environmental groups.

Sa b r i n a Bow m a n , o f Environmental Defence, is skeptical of Enbridge’s assertion that the line will pump mainly light oil.

“With the NEB approval they can pump as much of the tar sands oil as they want and we wouldn’t know,” she said.

Since the NEB approval, a series of integrity digs on the pipeline have been taking place to help support the planned capacity increase, said White, with one worksite being at G. Ross Lord Dam and Park in North York.

Environmental groups cite an Enbridge spill that saw 3.3 million litres of oil

go into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River on July 25, 2010 as cause for concern. That spill is estimated to have cost Enbridge more than $1 billion and is reportedly the largest on-land oil spill in U.S. history according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Last December, in light of the growing concerns, Toronto City Council requested Enbridge have an emergency response strategy in place for Toronto in order to minimize the impact of any potential spill.

Wa rd 2 4 W i l l ow d a l e Councillor David Shiner has been a part of the city effort to implement safety emergency response plans. At the moment, he said there are no such plans in place in the Greater Toronto Area.

“We are trying to make sure Enbridge can make the line as safe as it possibly can make it,” Shiner said.

“But the city can only do so much since it’s an issue that needs to be handled at the federal level. The federal government gave permission, but hasn’t pressured Enbridge, as much as the City of Toronto has done to implement safety procedures. Right now the city doesn’t have the capacity to respond to a disaster.”

Enbridge filed an Emergency Response Action Plan this past July with the NEB and is waiting for feedback before releasing details about it later this October.

Having spoken to communities along Line 9, Environmental Defence said most residents they contacted were unaware of the pipeline and the possibility of it carrying tar sands oil.

In a community meeting about Line 9, SBFF handed

out Tamil and Chinese pamphlets in order to improve the communication gap among north Scarborough residents, they said knew nothing of the pipeline.

THE OPPORTUNITY Metroland Media requires a Traffic Coordinator for its Metroland Media Toronto location reporting to the Trucking Supervisor, this position will directly oversee the loading/traffic operation as well as have involvement in other areas of the distribution operation.

TTC Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT)

INVITATION FOR APPLICATION To facilitate community input into the planning, development and implementation of accessible transit, the Toronto Transit Commission relies on the TTC Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT).

Its role is to represent the needs and concerns of people with disabilities and seniors who use the TTC. It provides guidance and policy advice to the Commission on issues pertaining to the ways and means of improving ďŹ xed route (i.e., TTC bus, subway, and streetcar) and Wheel-Trans services.

Five (5) volunteer positions on the committee are open to residents of the City of Toronto who have disabilities, as well as, seniors or others who have a knowledge of and an interest in accessible transportation issues. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of a minimum of 7 hours per week, to attend meetings normally held during regular business hours.

Interested applicants must attend one of the information sessions at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, to obtain more information about the committee and its function. Sessions will be held in Committee Room 1 on Wednesday, October 1st, 2014 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and on Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Application forms will be distributed only to attendees after the seminars.

Avoiding injuries in seniors Tips for fall from Toronto Central CCAC

As the last days of summer fade and the coolness in the air becomes the norm, so does concern for those who are frail, have mobility challenges or are otherwise vulnerable. Older adults often welcome the arrival of fall with both happiness that the hot weather has passed and trepidation about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to come.

Cooler temperatures herald many realities that may cause physical stress to an elderly person. These include the beginnings of frost, and later on, snow and ice. The prospect of managing on a slippery surface such as a sidewalk or stairs can be daunting for someone who is physically fragile. The logistics alone of navigating a walker or using a cane without slipping is one that can cause much anxiety in seniors.

For those who may be physically compromised, the prospect of suffering a fall, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s indoors or outside, is a very real fear.

The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) has a team of Care Coordinators who work with a large number of elderly clients. Through working with the elderly, the CCAC has learned some simple but effective tips to help their clients and other seniors to keep safe from injuries caused by falls.

Here are some proven strategies for the elderly in preventing unexpected slips and falls:

INDOOR â&#x20AC;˘ Make sure to always have one hand free in order to hold the handrail â&#x20AC;&#x201C; also consider putting handrails on both sides of the stairs â&#x20AC;˘ Proper indoor lighting is key to reducing falls â&#x20AC;&#x201C; brightly lit household areas will reduce the incidences of unexpected slips â&#x20AC;˘ Take one step at a time making sure your foot is firmly planted on the stairs before putting your weight on it â&#x20AC;˘ Always wear shoes or slippers with non-slip soles â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure that indoor stairs have appropriate treads or non-slip runners â&#x20AC;˘ Keep electrical cords out of the way by attaching them to walls and under carpets, in order to reduce the possibility of trips and falls
