Why did we send you this Guide? For more than 20 years, the Beacon Newspapers has attracted thousands of people to its annual 50+Expos in Montgomery County and Northern Virginia, featuring speakers, exhibits, health screenings, entertainment and more for people over 50. Due to the widespread COVID virus, for the safety of readers and their family members, we have temporarily postponed in-person events and offered a virtual event online instead. Last year, we were pleasantly surprised to have more than 9,000 unique visitors come to beacon50expo.com, our custom-designed website. This year, we hope you and your friends will bring us an even larger turnout! The Virtual 50+Expo includes immediate, free access, 24/7, to useful information from area nonprofits, government agencies and businesses, as well as prerecorded classes and expert speakers of special interest to people over 50. Our keynote speaker will be Diane Rehm, who hosted NPR’s “The Diane Rehm Show” for more than 30 years. Rehm will engage in a discussion with Beacon publisher Stuart Rosenthal addressing her broadcast career and the books she has written. A second keynote will feature Dr. Mark Warshawsky, former Deputy Commissioner
of Social Security, speaking about the future of Social Security and private pensions. In addition, the online expo will include: video demonstrations and classes on tai chi, yoga, cooking, nutrition, dance and more; more than a dozen speakers covering health and wellness, legal matters and estate planning, employment and volunteer opportunities, money and investments, retirement housing options and travel; and entertainment covering a broad range, from classical music to rock ‘n’ roll to comedy. To enable you to enjoy this wealth of material, the beacon50expo.com website will remain free and accessible day and night for three months — from November 1, 2021 through January 31, 2022. So, mark your calendar and plan to visit frequently. Valuable door prize drawings will also be held throughout the period. Flip through this Expo Program Guide to learn more about this event. Please visit us at beacon50expo.com and tell your friends about it, too! Thank you, Publisher

A better state of care. Better never stops. University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center has been recognized for the third consecutive year as a Best Hospital for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report. Named #3 in both the state and the Baltimore Metro area, UM St. Joseph is the highest-ranking community hospital in Maryland. We owe this recognition to our staff and physicians’ relentless commitment to providing high-quality, safe and compassionate patient care for all those we serve. We are most proud because of what this accomplishment means for our patients: excellent outcomes, improved health and wellness, and greater access to the very best care.
