Like having a backup son or daughter

Durable medical equipment helps prevent injuries and promotes functional independence. Examples include shower seats, lifts, wheelchairs and adjustable beds. Many items can be borrowed from loan closets. Medicare and insurance cover the cost of some equipment, if directly related to rehabilitation after an illness.

DURABLE EQUIPMENT - LOAN CLOSETS

Each of the following organizations operates a loan closet for medical equipment of various types. Some also offer financial assistance for purchase of equipment.

These are Medicare-certified agencies providing skilled healthcare ordered by a physician. They provide nurses, physical and occupational therapists and social workers to assist with rehabilitation. Insurance plans, including Medicare, may pay for part or all of these services.

Active Living Communities

These age-restricted communities, ranging from garden rental apartments to high-rise condominiums, are for active older adults. In addition to security, many offer additional services, such as housekeeping, some level of dining service and a variety of social activities. A number also offer assisted living services on a separate floor or wing.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES - Apartment Style

Apartmentstyle residences offering assisted living provide 24-hour supervision, housekeeping, three meals a day and assistance with basic daily needs, such as bathing, dressing and medications. Some services are included in the monthly rental charge; others may be charged separately. Many of the following offer assisted living on a floor or wing of their senior living community.
