STRANDS Strands Welcomes Gemma Howe Gemma Howe is Strands Hair Salon and Skin Spa’s newest senior stylist. With years of experience, Gemma is well-versed not only in hair cut and colour but also as a bridal specialist. She spoke with us about her experience and love of bridal hair. What is your background? I have almost ten years experience in the industry, having trained with Charles Worthington London, as well as graduated in management onboard world class luxury cruise liners. Most recently, I worked for the award-winning London salon, HOB, before moving to Bermuda to work for Strands. Have you worked with many brides before? I have worked with many brides and specialise in wedding hair. Getting to do occasion styles and bridal hair is my passion and forte. In your opinion, what is the the ultimate wedding hairstyle? The ultimate wedding hairstyle varies according to trend but in my experience the most requested (and elegant styles) are based on soft and sweeping hairstyles. What look do you try to achieve when doing a bride’s hair? I look to create a hairstyle that compliments a bride’s wedding look, keeping in mind her face shape, her wedding dress and the overall finish. I like to know what I am working with from head-to-toe so I can achieve the best look for every bride. To book a consultation with Gemma, call 441-295-0935. www.bermudianweddings.com

Crown Adopt the latest wedding trend and craft a blooming flower crown, perfect for a bride or her flower girl.
Step 1: Measure your head by wrapping a piece of wire around its circumference. Depending on the floral wire you’re using, you may need to join two pieces together to create the perfect-sized circle to fit your head. Create a circular shape by making hooks at each end of the wire: bend the end of one wire to create a loop; stick the end of the other wire through the loop and bend it back to create another loop; twist the ends around each wire to secure.
Materials:
Flowers such as gerbera daisies (shown) Bermuda cedar clippings Floral wire Floral tape Wire cutters Scissors
Step 2: Cut the stem of a flower so that it’s about seven inches long from the bud. Place the bud of the daisy on the wire of the headband. Wrap the stem around the wire and secure with floral tape. Add a few more buds in the same fashion. When you have three or four in a bunch together, secure by wrapping floral wire around the stems. Continue on like this until wire headband is filled with buds. When the headband is filled with buds, stick Bermuda cedar clippings throughout, making sure each is secured with floral wire.

James Tucker began making his own goat’s cheese in the mid-1990s when he decided it was time to keep his pet goats for more than just companionship. Currently, his six female goats (and one billy) allow him to produce cheeses of various flavours and consistency. The most popular are the fresh cheese—plain, Marley (fresh herbs) and Full Hott (peppers and rum)—and Hay Jude, a surface ripened cheese made from the same curd as the fresh cheese, but yielding a different taste and consistency. Divvy up portions of this all-natural, organic cheese into small glass jars and gift your wedding guests with them on your special day.

Randolph Furbert is famed Beekeeper Number 5. Having been around bees his entire life, his experience and knowledge are unmatched on our island. Currently, Furbert manages hundreds of hives across the island, making him the top supplier of Bermuda honey. Unfortunately, due to lack of rain and dwindling numbers of surviving hives, Bermuda produced its lowest yield of honey in 40 years in 2012. But despite the low numbers, Furbert continues to educate Bermuda’s population about the importance of local bees—and to educate the world about the deliciousness of Bermuda honey. Purchase pots of honey for each of your wedding guests, and make a gesture everyone will be buzzing about.
Caterer and part owner of Windybank Farm, Julie Grayston-Smith began crafting and bottling her range of food products in 2006. Using only the freshest ingredients, Grayston’s products focus on fruits and vegetables grown locally, benefiting both consumers and our island. Provide each of your guests with a jar or bottle of Grayston’s homemade goods or divvy up smaller portions and share the love.

Popular among local visitors, the Bermuda Rum Cake Company has been in operation for over 15 years, perfectly serving up the delicious rum-soaked treats made using Gosling’s Black Seal rum. Available in a wide array of flavours, including traditional, rum swizzle, coffee, chocolate, ginger, banana, coconut, loquat, fruit cake and a special Christmas variation, the cakes make for the perfect wedding favour for destination couples who wish their guests to, quite literally, get a taste for Bermuda. The small-size cakes (nine ounces) are priced at $14.95 at the Bermuda Rum Cake Company’s main store in Dockyard or duty-free across the island.
It was a dark and stormy night when the Sea Venture was wrecked on the Devils Isles, and it’s a Dark ‘n’ Stormy tradition that Bermudians enjoy 400-plus years later. Made with a devilishly delicious combination of Gosling’s Black Seal rum and ginger beer, Bermuda’s national drink has been the cause of many births, lost bets and plain drunken shenanigans. Honour tradition and gift your guests a small bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal rum and a can of ginger beer, so that after your big day is done they can sit back, enjoy a Dark ‘n’ Stormy and reminisce about your trip down the aisle.

Matt Hooper spent years collecting salts from around the world, but it wasn’t until 2012 that he decided to dip a five-gallon bucket into the water off the south shore and craft his own Bermuda sea salt. After hundreds of hours of researching and testing, the winning method was decided upon and Bermuda Artisan Sea Salt was born. Almost two years later, Hooper still dips his bucket into the water off south shore to make batches of his homemade salt, currently available in three variations: original, soy, and lime. Hooper’s salts are available for purchase at International Imports, Windybank Farm Market and Wadson’s Farm.

FAMILY HEIRLOOMS: How to Plan a Traditional Bermuda Wedding
z Long gone are the days when every Bermuda nuptial involved a horse and carriage and a walk through a moongate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t honour local tradition on your wedding day. Although we may not know the origin of every single one of our local practices, it will never stop us from participating in them, enjoying them and relishing the way they add a distinctive touch to a Bermuda wedding. Welcome the Good, Avoid the Bad Of course, as islanders, Bermudians have a long list
of superstitions, and as tradition dictates, one’s wedding day is the most important day on which to welcome signs of good luck and avoid bad luck entirely. Accord-
ing to Bermuda legend, it is bad luck for a bride to see a lizard on the road while en route to the church, although a black cat is a good sign! It is also considered bad luck to arrive at the church before a funeral is over. Seeing a rainbow on your wedding day is considered to be very lucky in Bermuda— more so than if it is a perfectly sunny day. If a Bermuda bride catches rain in the palm of her hand on her way out of the church, it is said to be a sign of riches to come.

Diamonds Are a Bride’s Best Friend Marilyn Monroe said it best but one thing she didn’t take into consideration is that diamonds sparkle their finest on a girl saying “I do.” You don’t need to be ultra glamorous to wear sparklers on your wedding day, the only thing you need is a gown, a bouquet and a groom waiting for you at the end of an aisle. 30 | THE BERMUDIAN Weddings

managed a “Yes!” both of their families reemerged from the parking lot, along with additional family members and close friends, and toasted the officially engaged couple. “The night ended with lots of smiles and non-alcoholic wine in the parking lot!” the couple recall fondly. Marissa and Ramon were married on October 12, 2012, at the First Church of God on North Shore Road, Pembroke. As devout Christians, the religious aspect of their wedding day was a top priority, so they chose to focus most of their attention on the ceremony. The gospel singing group Intended Worship was invited to lead the service, and Marissa surprised Ramon by walking down the aisle to “Bless the Broken Road” by Selah, a song he had played for her in the early stages of their relationship. The couple made sure their guests would understand the true meaning of their coming together to share in their special day by giving each of them a written explanation of “The Wedding Now and the Wedding to Come”: a comparison between the love Jesus has for the church and the love a groom has for his bride. Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests headed to Pier 6 on Front Street, not the intended location of their reception but one the couple had to decide upon at the last minute as inclement

Indeed the change in location worked out perfectly as the couple treated their guests to a celebration full of surprises. “I secretly met with Working Title, the reception band, before the wedding to rehearse a song I planned to perform for Ramon,” recalls Marissa. “Following our first dance, it was my turn to take the mic. I began singing to Ramon and he was totally surprised and beamed from ear to ear!” Throughout the rest of the evening the couple and their guests dined on food by Wilks Catering and danced the night

Once their big day was behind them, Marissa and Ramon set sail for the Caribbean, exploring numerous islands, sampling local dishes and relishing married life. For now, Marissa and Ramon are enjoying being husband and wife, but the future isn’t far from their minds. “In the next few years we hope to be married still, with a family, although we’re not stating numbers.” Something else they hope to be doing? Working together in a joint ministry serving young men and women—a project very similar to the one that started it all.

But despite the poor weather conditions, she adds, “Nothing could ruin the day I was going to marry the man of my dreams.” As the rain poured down, the decision was made to move their prearranged outdoor reception at the Coral Beach Club into the dining room—a decision that didn’t faze the bride or groom, and certainly not their guests, who feted the newlywed couple graciously. Adam celebrated their marriage surrounded by the 90 guests who flew in from far and wide to be a part of their special day. Just after dinner was finished, the rain retreated and the entire wedding party took to the balcony to end the night dancing under the stars. Looking back, the couple agree their wedding day didn’t go according to plan, but they advise other couples that that’s no reason to stop celebrating. “No matter what you are thrown on your wedding day, just go with the flow and enjoy it; it’s never going to work out exactly how you planned.”

a farewell party and invited 60 friends to their apartment to say goodbye to Niel. During the party, Olya tailored and performed a song for Niel: “From Olya, With Love.” When she had finished, Niel dropped to one knee and asked Olya to be his wife. With a simple “Yes,” their sad farewell party for one turned into a happy engagement party for two. With Niel in Bermuda and Olya in Russia, the couple hurriedly put together a Bermuda wedding with overtones of Russian tradition. Olya always dreamed of having a church wedding, something that is quite rare in Russia with most couples opting to marry in a civil ceremony. It worked out that the beautiful St. John’s Church, where Niel was christened, was available for their special day. “We wanted our ceremony to be traditional, formal and conducted in a place that would impress upon us and our guests the solemnity of the occasion,” the couple

Bishop Nicholas Dill officiated, treating the couple and their guests to a marriage analogy: One strand of rope, he told the congregation, is not strong enough on its own, but when three strands are woven together, they are

unbreakable. Bishop Dill explained that Olya is one strand of the rope and Niel is another, and that their faith in God is the third. Following such a formal ceremony, the couple welcomed their guests to a more laid-back, garden-style wedding reception at the home of friend and neighbour, Shelly Greene. And of course, no Russian gathering is complete without vodka, which was in ample supply. For their wedding favours, the couple cleverly handed out traditional Matryoshka, Russian nesting dolls, to their Bermudian guests and Bermuda sand ornaments to their Russian guests. Although the couple had to overcome a few serious immigration hurdles to get some of their 30 Russian guests to Bermuda to take part in their big day, this only emphasised the theme of Olya and Niel’s love story: that love conquers all and nothing must stand in the way of two people destined to be together.

When you broke the news to family and friends that
Bermuda was the location of your destination wedding, how did they react? They were all so excited! All in all, we had 50 people at our wedding and only six of them actually live in Bermuda, so it was a great group of people we got to welcome to the island. They all stayed in Somerset at private cottages and all of them had a wonderful time.
Did you hire a wedding planner? No wedding planner, we did all the planning ourselves. That’s amazing! Obviously, planning a destination wedding is challenging from so far away. Did you run into any difficulties? We took a lot of the celebration on faith. We had no rain contingency plan, and the day we flew to Bermuda the forecast was 90 percent chance of rain all week. We fortunately landed in perfect weather and only had about two hours of light rain during the entire trip. The rest of the week, including the wedding day was sunny and spectacular! Five Reasons Why You Should Get Married on a Boat 1. Limit Your Guest List
Tying the knot on board a boat means that you have to keep your guest list to a minimum. Although this is bad news for your distant cousins who probably won’t receive an invite, it’s great for you because it means that you can keep costs to a minimum. An added bonus is that unless they’re trying to pull up alongside on a paddle board, wedding crashers will have to stay ashore while you celebrate your wedding with only your closest family and friends. 2. For the Love of Docksides
Boating obviously calls for boating shoes, meaning your groom and his groomsmen can wear their Docksides instead of having to fork out for dress shoes they’ll never wear again. 3. Nautical Nautiness
Forget trying to decide on a wedding theme, yours is nautical. From the cake to the decorations and everything in between, your day will incorporate pink sand, Bermuda blue and plenty of ocean-inspired details. Spend your first moments as husband and wife doing the Titanic pose at the bow of the ship and later take a late-night dip in the sea with your wedding party. 4. Everything Tastes Better on the Water
Whether you’ve realised it or not, everything edible tastes better when eaten aboard a boat. Champagne, lobster, caviar, and even wedding cake is more delicious with the addition of salty sea air and the gentle rocking motion provided by the Atlantic Ocean. 5. The Best Views
All joking aside, if you want ocean views on your wedding day, the best location is on a boat. You can even make a grand exit on a jet ski, speeding off into the setting sun.

Does the Venetian follow a specific route when chartering or can couples request a special route? Couples can request a specific route, but the weather will determine whether the route requested can be followed or not.
What is the cost of chartering the Venetian? The Venetian has many different charters available, ranging in price from $1,600 to $7,000. Contact Emma Simmons for the cost of your specific charter. Couples are advised to book their charter as soon as possible.
What is the Venetian’s cancellation policy? Charters cancelled by the client are subject to a charge which varies from $300 to the full charter cost, depending on the notice given. Charters cancelled by the captain are given a full deposit refund if not rescheduled.

Wedding services offered by the UberVida: Family meet-and-greet, pre-wedding
The UberVida
The UberVida was built in the late 1960s in Plymouth, England. At the time of its construction, the UberVida was one of the only all-fibreglass yachts, as well as the largest catamaran, in existence. The boat was commissioned by an Englishman who was so afraid of nuclear fallout that he wanted to board the UberVida and spend time out at sea until it was safe to return to land. When the threat of nuclear war had subsided, he sold the UberVida in St. Maarten, where she acted as the only ferry between St. Maarten, St. Bart’s and Anguilla until 1995 when a hurricane struck and the yacht was wrecked. The greatly damaged UberVida lay in a boat yard for 13 years before Bermudian Denis Owen found her in 2008 and started to fix her up. It took Owen two years of continual work until the UberVida was ready to set sail once again, making the celebratory journey of over 800 miles through the Bermuda Triangle to her new home in Bermuda. Since arriving in Bermuda in 2010, the UberVida has become the go-to yacht for celebrating any occasion. Winning The Bermudian magazine’s Best of Bermuda Award for “Best Private Party Boat Charter” in both 2012 and 2013, is proof that the UberVida has taken well to her new life in Bermuda’s waters.

guests on the night before the wedding. An hour before the boat was to leave the dock, the sky opened up and it began to rain. We had 90 guests, and only 45 fit under the boat’s awning. Given the time and effort we had spent planning everything, we were reluctant to cancel the boat cruise. We decided to press on and face the rain. When we told everyone that we had plenty of traditional Bermudian food, Dark ‘n’ Stormies and rum swizzles on board, our guests were happy to shuttle down to the boat through the rain and cram under the boat’s awning. Within 20 minutes the

When a bridesmaid went to collect it, however, she was told they did not have the wedding dress. Thank goodness the dress was found after much anxiety, and the bride did not find out about the almost-disaster until after the wedding.”

Overgrown Arrival “After the make-up artist and hairdresser put their finishing touches on the bridesmaids, we were picked up in a traditional Bermuda horse-drawn carriage for the short ride to the location where the wedding ceremony and reception were taking place. As we entered the property via the back entrance there were low-hanging branches which we couldn’t get by, so my uncle had to run down with a machete and cut them back to allow the carriage to get up to the house so the ceremony could begin.”
Best Man, Bad Behaviour “The best man swore up a storm throughout his speech!”
Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot! “The humidity was so high on the day
of our wedding that our cake began to melt. In addition to the sweating cake, the groomsmen were on the dance floor shirtless by the end of the night!” www.bermudianweddings.com
