wedding gift registry. While everyday items like cutlery, glasses and other tableware are still popular, more couples are choosing to register for items like high-quality outdoor furniture and beautiful decorative items for the home. What price should the items be on a couple’s registry list? There’s really no right or wrong way to compile a list. We’ve seen couples put everything from a $4 vintage fork to their dream set of outdoor furniture on the same list! We have items which can suit any budget, so for guests who have already contributed to the wedding in other ways but still want to buy a gift there are always nice options, like a beautiful throw pillow for $45. On the other end of the spectrum, guests can always make their preferred contribution towards your dream set of furniture. Ultimately, your guests won’t mind what the item is as long as they know that you have chosen it and will love it. There is so much to choose from at Island Trading. What if a couple is unsure of what to put on their registry and afraid of committing? We get that a lot, especially with all the decisions a couple is making during their engagement. We have a fantastic team at Island Trading who can guide you on what works for your life now and what you will continue to enjoy for years to come. But if you really don’t want to commit to specific things on a registry, that’s ok too. We can set up an in-store wedding fund so that your guests can chose an amount and contribute. You can then spend it on whatever you want! Favourite wedding registry story? Oh, that one’s easy! We had an adorable bride and groom who registered for lots of little everyday items but added one “dream” item—an outdoor teak table to seat 12—not expecting anyone www.bermudianweddings.com

Bermuda Weddings Looking Back at
of Yesteryear
The Bermudian and The Bermudian Weddings magazines have been celebrating Bermuda brides since 1930. Over the last 84 years we’ve printed the island’s most prominent, most memorable and most daringly fashionable unions. Here we take a look back at these weddings and reminisce about what it was like to say “I do” in old Bermuda.
April 1930 Miss Doris Rosabelle Harnett, daughter of the Hon. and Mrs. L. B. Harnett of “Glynhir,” Pembroke, became the bride of Mr. John Gianella of Brooklyn, New York. The service took place at Wesley Church, with a reception at “Glynhir.”
1937
October 27, 1938 At St. Paul’s A. M. E. Church, Miss Catherine Olivia Louise Cannonier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Cannonier of Warwick East, married Mr. Edward Henry Simons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Simons. A reception was held at Charleston in Paget, the home of the bridegroom’s parents. Music was provided by an orchestra conducted by Harry Foster.

Moongates became popular in the 1920s when the Furness Withy travel company commissioned the Duke of Westminster’s gardener to landscape the gardens of the old Bermudiana Hotel. The moongate idea was imported from China, and the first was erected at what is now the west entrance to Par-la-Ville Park. Local legend has it that a bride and a groom should make a wish and walk through a moongate on their wedding day.
February 2, 1950
April 10, 1950
Miss Frances Elizabeth Ashmore of Cardiff, Wales, became the bride of Mr. Henry James Tucker III, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Tucker, Jr. of Paget. The Rev. Mr. Leslie Gunner officiated at the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. Mr. David Evans of St. John’s Church, Pembroke. Later some eight hundred guests flocked to the Tucker home, The Lagoon. Music was provided by the Talbot Brothers.
Miss Patricia Joan Selley, daughter of Mrs. Ethel Selley of Pembroke and the late John Selley, married John Elliot (Shot) Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Cooper of Shelly Bay. The ceremony took place at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity with a reception at the English Speaking Union, Cedar Avenue.
January 1960 October 1964 Miss Rosamond Wendy Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard W. Walker of Paget, wed Mr. Michael Anthony Butt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert R. Butt of Richmond Hill, Ontario, at Christ Church in Devonshire. After the wedding, a reception was held at Pomander Gate, Paget.
At St. John’s Church, Pembroke, Miss Cornelia Ann Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hinson Cooper of Paget, became the bride of Mr. J. Warren Young, son of Admiral and Mrs. Edwin J. S. Young of Orange Park, Jacksonville, Fla. The ceremony was performed by Canon E. N. B. Chapman, with Mr. David Wadson at the organ. The choir of the Bermuda High School for Girls was directed by Miss Gladys Tatem.

The custom of getting to and from the wedding by horse and buggy started, naturally enough, back when it was the best way to get around the island. In those days, a large carriage would transport the groom and his attendants to the wedding, then go and pick up the bride and her party. This way the bride could be sure the groom was already at the church, waiting for her. 1966

For hundreds of years, brides and grooms in Bermuda have planted the Bermuda cedar tree on their wedding day. The tradition became more important after juniper scale wiped out almost every cedar on the island in the 1940s.

DID YOU KNOW?
One of the most brilliant weddings of 1956 took place at Holy Trinity Church, Hamilton Parish, when Miss Josephine Diana Wilkinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Bernard Wilkinson of Bailey’s Bay, became the bride of Mr. Edwin Jay Gould, son of Mrs. John Metler Sturgeon III of Rose Hill Plantation, Bluffton, N.C., and the late Mr. Frank Miller Gould of New York. A specially chartered Pan American World Airways plane brought members of the wedding party and guests from New York and took them home after the nuptials.
The first flight to Bermuda from the USA didn’t happen until April 1, 1930, and commercial flights to and from Bermuda didn’t commence until May 17, 1937; before then, all goods imported to the island had to arrive by ship, making importing flowers costly. Local brides used what grew locally instead, predominately Easter lilies, ferns, stephanotis, white roses and orange blossom.
1956 In Christ Church, Devonshire, Miss Penelope Joan Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Christopher Smith of Warwick East, became the bride of Mr. John Lewis Duhring, son of Mrs. Edwin L. Duhring of Philadelphia, Pa., and the late Mr. Duhring. The church was beautifully decorated with white and yellow gladioli and magnolia blossoms. After the ceremony, a reception was held at Thurlestone, home of the bride’s parents.
July 1972 At Christ Church, Warwick, Miss Dinah Jane Trainer Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald John Williams of Somerset, was married to Mr. Bryan Robert Darby, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Owen Darby of Northfleet, Kent, Eng. After the wedding, a reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents. www.bermudianweddings.com

Michael Darling and Mrs. Holly Webb, became the bride of Michael Ernest Barany, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Barany of Napton, Warwickshire, Eng. After the ceremony, a reception was held at “Lancashire Lodge,” the Warwick home of the bride’s grandmother, Mrs. Leslie Darling.
February 1996 Laquita Bean wed Kevin Hill in a ceremony at Astwood Cove. The ceremony included a performance by the Empress Menen Dancers and Mandela Freedom Drummers. A reception followed with more performances and an elegant three-tiered pound and fruitcake.

During the Second World War, The Bermudian magazine took great measures to stay in publication despite financial hardships. As part of those measures, the magazine was downgraded in size and most editorial was published without accompanying photographs. Full-page wedding announcements were also given the axe and replaced with The Bermudian’s “Milestones” section, featuring short blurbs announcing engagements, weddings, births and deaths.

Advantages of Getting Married at a Private Beach • Can be cost-effective if you’re having a big wedding with lots of details, as many things can be provided on-site. • Private clubs and hotels usually work from a preferred list of vendors, making selection easy for you. • Teams of people are already on-site, ready to set up and break down your wedding. • Private; you don’t risk dealing with the public. • No need to supply generators; electricity is provided by the venue. • Weather-contingent space is readily available on-site. Advantages of Getting Married at a Public Beach • Can be cost-effective if you’re having a small wedding without too many details. Public beaches can be rented for just $25 through Bermuda’s Department of Parks. • Can select your own vendors rather than having to choose from a list of approved vendors provided by a hotel or private club. • Can customise the venue, creating your own dress code and décor.

A sand ceremony involves a symbolic blending of two differently coloured sands into a single vessel. The meaning is clear: the blending of two different beings, the bride and the groom, into a single, inseparable unit that is their marriage, the joining of their lives. As hard as it would be to separate those grains of sand, that’s how difficult it is to separate these two people. The sand ceremony usually takes place after the exchange of rings and the vows (although it can take place before or even during the vows), and lasts just a couple of minutes. A basic sand ceremony involves three (typically glass) vessels—one holding the bride’s sand, one holding the groom’s sand, and an empty one that will soon hold both—all sitting on a small table or stand. It goes something like this: The officiate explains the meaning of the ceremony and how it relates to the two people getting married. The officiate invites the groom to pour a bit of his sand (let’s call it blue sand) into the empty vessel. The officiate invites the bride to do the same with her sand (let’s say it’s pink). The bride and groom then pour their sands at the same time, in a single stream, into the vessel. The officiate closes the ceremony with some words about the inextricable joining of their lives. The end result is a glass container holding one layer of blue sand (the groom), one layer of pink sand (the bride), and a top layer of purple sand, showing how the joining of the two has created a new, equally beautiful entity. Make the sand ceremony special to your wedding by incorporating sands from favourite beaches around the island, by inviting each member of the wedding party to add sand to the container to commemorate the special place they hold in your new life together, or by coordinating the sand colours to the wedding colour scheme.

BEACH CHUPPAH A chuppah is a canopy beneath which Jewish marriage ceremonies are performed. However, you don’t have to be Jewish in order to say “I do” underneath your own wedding chuppah. The simplest form of chuppah is one that is constructed of four poles, with a canopy of light fabric draped across the top. The more elaborate chuppahs are adorned in flowers, crystals and chandeliers and can be big enough to fit several people underneath. The perfect beach wedding chuppah is simple, ethereal and complimented by only a few flowers strategically placed. Drape your chuppah in soft white fabric, which will give a warm, romantic feeling to your wedding ceremony. Add a few blooms in the colour of your choice (coordinating with your colour scheme). Be careful not to go overboard when decorating your chuppah; allow the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean to take centre stage.

BERMUDA SEA GLASS CANDY RECIPE
Razor-sharp tailoring in Bermuda
Yields roughly three-quarters of a pound of candy — perfect for wedding favours!
Ingredients: • • • • •
1 cup sugar 1/3 cup light corn syrup 6 tbsps water Food colouring 1 tsp flavouring oil (depending on how strong you like the flavour) • Non-stick cooking spray • Powdered sugar for dusting Lightly spray a small metal pan with nonstick spray. Combine the sugar, water and corn syrup in the non-stick saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. When it begins to simmer, attach a candy thermometer to the edge of the saucepan. When the mixture reaches 250°F, add food colouring. Don’t stir; the bubbling action will distribute the colour for you. Once the thermometer reads 300°F, add flavouring and stir. Immediately pour the bubbling mixture into prepared pan and let cool. When fully cooled, cover with a piece of parchment paper and hit with a mallet. Collect the pieces of candy and brush with powdered sugar. To store the candy, place in an airtight container and keep at room temperature. www.bermudianweddings.com

weddings, capturing as much as possible before the service is often a good idea as it allows the couple to spend as much time as possible with their guests at cocktail hour and dinner. Generally, group shots take 15 to 30 minutes and couple shots take between 20 and 30 minutes, so that can be up to an hour doing photos when the newlyweds could be celebrating with friends and family. Whether the couple chooses to have an intimate first meeting before the ceremony which is special and tender (and then capture photos with family and bridal party, and even couple shots, so that the party can be enjoyed more fully later) or they prefer to be traditional and not see each other until the ceremony, a timeline can be created to suit the couple’s needs.”—Sacha Blackburne Who owns the photos—me or the photographer? “Photographers own the copyright of their images. Besides that, sleep and joy and makeup that the bride is happy with are all good. Making sure a dress does not need fiddling with or adjusting constantly is key since a photographer cannot concentrate the whole time on whether there is a fault with wardrobe, a bra showing, for instance, or an ill-fitting dress.”—Sacha Blackburne Is it a good idea or a bad idea to allow guests to take photos? “I have no problem with guests taking photographs. If you are having a beach ceremony, there will usually be some breeze so it is best to wear your hair up. Applying your makeup a bit more heavily than you normally would is helpful, too, as long as it still looks natural and you look like you. Try to be in the moment as much as possible and don’t stress over the details. If you are being yourself and enjoying the day, it will show through in the photos. Let your photographer know (ahead of time) any issues you have with getting your picture taken, like a goofy grin that tends to show up in photos. bride walking down the aisle and we can definitely capture the bride and groom walking up the aisle. However, if guests extend their phones into the aisle, we cannot get that shot. Up until about five years ago, some of my favourite images were captured as the couple was walking up the aisle. They are beaming, they look at each other, they smile at their friends and at the end of the aisle they kiss! I used to love that shot— that kiss with their happy friends behind them. That shot no longer happens; too many people are looking at their phones or too many phones, not smiling faces, are in the background. Many couples these days are requesting that their ceremonies be “unplugged.” I love this idea—I feel that at the ceremony guests should be present and not on their phones.”—Amanda Temple What is a shot list? “A shot list is a list of key shots the couple feel they must have on the day.”—Sacha Blackburne What should I include on my shot list? “This is a personal decision, but I do think that it is important to include your specific wants. catering Are there hidden expenses, like sales and service taxes or delivery fees, I should know about? “Everything should be listed in a contract between you and the caterer, but look out for those details; ensure items you need are listed and check the fine print from the caterer.”— Andy Detzer, Fourways Catering “No. When we put a proposal together, we work hard to include everything so the client is not surprised by the final bill.”—Magalie Favresse, IRG Should we spring for an open bar? “Choosing an open bar gives you an advantage when budgeting for your event as most caterers have a set price per person, per hour. With consumption billing you are only charged for what is consumed, so there could be positives there for a certain group. Ultimately it is you who know your guests best; choosing an open bar could be a negative. Your alternative is a limited bar where you would only offer beer, wine and soda, or a signature drink.”—Andy Detzer, Fourways Catering “IRG charges the bar based on consumption; we take an inventory at the beginning of the event and at the end. This way, the client is charged for what has been consumed and nothing else. If you have budget constraints, you can close your bar earlier and switch to a cash bar. “—Magalie Favresse, IRG We’re having a sit-down dinner. Is one entrée enough or should we give guests more options? “Adding choices per course increases your cost. It is your special day; you should decide what you would like and then the caterer should be able to accommodate any special requests for dietary needs beyond that. Quite an important reminder here: make sure the RSVP of the invitation includes a section where your guests can let you know about their particular dietary needs. This will go a long way to helping you and your caterer plan www.bermudianweddings.com
ahead.”—Andy Detzer, Fourways Catering “We always recommend that the clients give their guests more than one option. Nowadays people are very health conscious or may have allergies to specific foods. With one entrée only, you run the risk that not all your guests will be able to eat.”—Magalie Favresse, IRG Should we serve guests the actual wedding cake or order sheet cake of the same variety for them? “A common thread here: it really depends on your budget. The larger and more impressive the cake, the deeper you have to look into your pocket. Ordering a sheet cake the same variety as your actual cake is definitely where you could save some money.”—Andy Detzer, Fourways Catering “If it is a small wedding (fewer than fifty guests), serve them the wedding cake. If the wedding is bigger, order a sheet cake; it will help your budget.”—Magalie Favresse, IRG
