Adult Day Care An adult day care center is a non-residential facility providing supervised activities for the elderly and/or handicapped persons. Most adult day centers operate 10 to 12 hours per week day and provide meals, social/recreational outings, and general supervision. Some of the benefits of an adult day care center are: providing reminders for taking medications, protecting the senior from wandering away that could result in serious injury or death, decreasing the feeling of loneliness and depression; providing a supervised environment which gives the caregiver/family the peace of mind, and provide the needed break in care giving without the feeling of guilt or neglect.

Home Care Providers Home care providers provide home care aides, companion care, homemaker services, assistance with activities of daily living in the client’s place of residence (i.e. home, hospital, assisted living, or nursing home). These providers are not certified home health care agencies and are not able to provide services which are covered and reimbursed by the Medicare program, some Medicaid programs, and some private insurance programs.

Care is offered on an hourly basis. Home care providers which have a license from

the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals may provide assistance with activities of daily living: bathing, toileting, grooming, eating, dressing, transferring, continence care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, pet care, and incidental transportation. Hospice Care Services Hospice is a method of caring for the terminally ill that helps provide comfort and support to patients and family members when an illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Hospice neither prolongs life nor hastens death.

The primary goal is to improve the quality of a patient’s last days. Hospice can be provided in the home, hospice facility, nursing home, or hospital.

Medical, social, spiritual, and counseling services can all be part of hospice care. Information and Assistance – Provides the individual with current information on opportunities and services within the community.

Legal Assistance – providing legal advice, counseling, and representation by an attorney. Lectures are scheduled on a quarterly basis.

Recreation – Art, crafts, hobbies, games, and trips.

Transportation – transporting older persons to and from community facilities and resources.
