Giovanni Pinarello, or “Nani” as his friends called him, was born in Catena di Villorba on the 10th July 1922, he was the 8th of 12 children. His love for two wheels and an innate gift as an indomitable fighter led him to pursue a career in cycling. From 1946 Giovanni made his mark in the world of cycling, but it was in 1951 that Nani had his personal date with destiny: racing in the 34th Giro d’Italia, which was won by Rosa Fiorenzo Magni. In last place comes Giovanni, but in those years last place was not a disgrace, instead, the rider wore the Maglia Nera (Black Jersey). That jersey went on to tag Giovanni forever “the one with the Maglia Nera”. Gino Bartalia, a very good friend of Nani’s noted a dedication, “The Black Jersey of Cycling…but the Pink Jersey of Life.” That was to be Giovanni’s last season as a pro, and in 1953 in Treviso Cicli Pinarello is born. 1961: Pinarello sponsor their first ride and take a first victory at the Tour de l’Avenir, thanks to Guido de Rosso. The Pinarello brand begins to carve out it’s own space ahead of the bigger names of it’s time…small sponsorship, small goals, and slowly but surely the plant grew. 1975: Pinarello enjoys it’s first Giro d’Italia victory, opening a decade of great satisfaction! Cicli Pinarello begins to enjoy widespread popularity and the 80’s become a period of many victories for the small factory in Treviso. 1988: Giovanni introduces his young son, Fausto, to the business and alongside came the first Tour de France victory with Pedro Delgado. Pinarello, thus, begins to change and the 90’s open the door to a decade which will mark the fate of the Treviso born brand… In the years to follow Pinarello began to launch successful models every two years, this marking a decisive growth in the Treviso bike manufacturer’s status in the sector. 2009: Fausto joins forces with a small operation, a new born…Team Sky, who have dominated the cycling world since then, winning the Tour de France twice. But as the saying goes, life is like a bike race: Who is there is there, who’s not chases.

Catena is the name of the small town where Giovanni Pinarello was born and started his business. The name of his hometown was surely an indication of what the future held for Giovanni as catena translates to “chain” in English. Certainly fitting for the man who both raced at the highest level and then went on to create a brand known the world over for making excellent quality bikes. The Catena is produced using the same construction methods that were employed to make the first bikes to come out of the Pinarello store. The frame is made of CrMo steel, uses a fixed gear transmission and boasts a retro Pinarello headbadge to evoke memories of the heroics seen in cycling’s past.

Key differences from the Dogma 65.1 frame are the seat angle with an inclination of about one degree less, lesser steering angle varying between 0.5 degrees difference in the smaller frames and 1.5 degrees in the bigger frames. The rear stay is thinner with a unique curvature for the seatstays, abandoning the classic ONDA monostay. The clearances for the wheels have been increased in order to mount larger tyres in the case of difficult terrains. Extended wheel base means less vertical stiffness and greater absorption capacity on bumpy routes.

The FCX Cross is built on an asymmetric frame to confer a more symmetric and efficient power transfer with each pedal stroke. The top tube is rounded and more ergonomic than its road counterparts in an effort to increase comfort and facilitate shouldering the bike. Internal cable routing makes for both a clean look in addition to keeping the mud and grime away from your cables. Mechanical disk brakes ensure surefooted braking even in the worst conditions. And they have created a real BOLIDE. An extraordinary labour that allows the BOLIDE to reduce by 15% the total aerodynamic impact, compared to the Graal. Think2: the BOLIDE is fully compatible with both mechanical and electronic groupsets; the position of the water bottle can be lowered towards the bottom bracket to increase aerodynamic performance; the sections of the down tube are optimized to “hide” the bottle from the airflow; horizontal rear dropouts (as normally used on track bikes), in order to adjust and move the wheel closer to the frame; in the bottom bracket there is a special area designed to accommodate the SRM ® sensor. BOLIDE has reduced the aerodynamic drag by 15% and the total weight by 5%, from the Graal. A technological BOLIDE, a concentration of innovation and Italian craftsmanship, a new accomplishment for Pinarello.
