Monroe Life This holiday season, I am so grateful for veterans like my father, Freddie Joe Atkins, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, and my Uncle Raymond, who we just lost. Raymond was 86 years old. Like many servicemen, there were times he missed out on holidays and family events (my Dad was away in Germany when I was born!) But because of men like him, we are able to celebrate these precious holiday times in peace. Thank you, veterans and active servicemen! We hope you find this issue of Monroe Life filled with holiday cheer and inspiration. If you’re looking for Christmas decoration ideas, we have a tour of homes in Rarity Bay dressed to the nines in their Christmas finest, as well as a feature on the traditional Christmas décor at the Atkins family home. For more design ideas, Pennington Home recently had a Christmas Open House. Formerly a popup shop, they are just one of many new ventures coming to our area. To satisfy your sweet tooth, we My Dad, Freddie Atkins was in Germany when I was born! have classic holiday recipes sure to inspire even amateur bakers. If you are worried about your garden with the impending chill of winter, check out our Gardening feature on some tips to keep your yard healthy until springtime rolls around again. We also reflect back 10 years after the fire at United Methodist Church and look at the life of early Hiwassee graduate, Juanita Weaver.

Freddie Atkins Turns 80! Celebration at Berts!

Whether you are celebrating Christmas surrounded by loved ones or far away, we are grateful for all of our readers and for the generous sponsors who make this publication possible. May your holiday season be filled with blessings, laughter and joy as you celebrate the birth of our Savior!

ll aboard for the Rarity Bay Polar Express! The Po

arvey and Leslie Phillips’ home embraces the Polar Express theme – by train, tram or horse-drawn carriage! Rich red and gold place settings with a Victorian villagethemed display on the table runner welcome guests to a magical evening meal. Trams soar through the air, and carousel animals look positively ready to ride. A large sailboat lined with lights and a train set on the kitchen island add more ways to hitch a ride to the North Pole. And if you are craving a little something sweet, a variety of treats are displayed amid the train display. This house is truly a delight for both the eyes and the belly!

These clay cottages are designed by artist Jan Richardson, owner and founder of Windy Meadow Pottery Ltd. Each cottage is built using slab stoneware. The fine detailing is unique to a Windy Meadows Pottery cottage in that each shingle, vine, flower or lattice is applied individually. All of the Windy Meadows Pottery collections are individually hand-constructed; molds are never used!

Santa’ p o h s s Wor k

olorful laser lights and lighted paper snowflake bags draw you in to the next house, owned by Larry and Carol Strunk. The North Pole itself is featured right in the entryway with a fun display, featuring festive lights, blankets of snow and classic Christmas trees. You will also catch Santa’s mischievous little helpers throughout the home, as well as bags full of Santa’s gifts. Incarnations of Father Christmas can be found at the dining table, on a bathroom sink…even riding in his sleigh! From the bedrooms to gathering spaces and everywhere in between, the entire house radiates whimsical holiday cheer both inside and out!

Believer’s Bluff

he final stop of the Polar Express took ticketholders to “Believer’s Bluff,” owned and decorated by John and Kim Wood. From the colorfully-lit wreaths on the front doors to fanciful decorations throughout the house, the Polar Express theme of “believe” is well represented. An elegantly appointed dining table boasts silver and gold decorations, and each setting is adorned with the word “believe.” A train set circles around tree-topped blocks that spell out...you guessed it, “believe.” In the kitchen, carolers raise their voices skyward as lights twinkle on a merry tree in the background. In fact, there are multiple trees throughout the house beckoning everyone to believe in the magic of Christmas.

Polar Express Ends At Rarity Bay Clubhouse

S

ince 2004 when the Polar Express movie first hit theaters, many towns across America have partnered with their local train venues to offer real-life Polar Express excursions. Clad in their pajamas, Moms, Dads, and kids of all ages come out in droves to hop on these trains, drink hot chocolate, eat cookies, and reenact the traditions from the Polar Express book and movie. It’s a great holiday tradition and fun! Rarity Bay Women’s Club (RBWC) thought Rarity Bay residents would enjoy a similar Christmas festivity when 120 residents (aka “travelers”) were given a Rarity Bay Depot Golden Ticket and on the back of that Ticket the travelers were directed to travel by car to three surprise train station/home destinations thematically called: The Polar

16

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

Express; Santa’s Workshop, and Believer’s Bluff which you’ll enjoying seeing on the previous pages. The travelers’ arrived at each station/home and had their Golden Tickets enthusiastically punched, after which the travelers spent 20 minutes touring the lavishly decorated homes. At the sound of a train whistle and conductor’s “All Aboard”, the travelers departed and headed to the next train station/home on their tickets. After visiting the three train stations/homes, the excursion ended when travelers arrived at The North Pole (Rarity Bay Clubhouse) to meet Santa and Mrs. Clause, enjoy a lovely dinner and sing seasonal music. All 120 travelers made their Polar Express travels in their PJs - as you can get a glimpse of in these photos.

New Entrepreneurs in Sweetwater

W

alt Disney once said, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” His spirit for entrepreneurship sparked a cultural phenomenon. With that same spirit in mind, new doors will soon be opening in Sweetwater, Tennessee, thanks in part to the State of TN Economic & Community Development Department’s Main Street Entrepreneur grants. Sweetwater is a nationally recognized Main Street community and is known regionally as a destination for day trips and festivals. Recently, the Sweetwater Main Street committee and the City of Sweetwater have actively pursued and marketed to entrepreneurs. The low tax rates and Southern charm of Sweetwater have attracted and sustained several unique small businesses. The downtown’s revitalization over the past two decades has garnered

18

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

new businesses, visitors and wide spread publicity. The newest project is a Business Incubator located in the old Morris Galleries building on Main Street. This beautiful historic building (recently purchased by local architect and City Commissioner Sam Moser and wife, Kelly) will host five new business ventures and later add the first loft apartments in downtown. Moser’s design will include spaces to accommodate his own professional office, Main Street Studio; a new coffee shop, Cup Runneth Over Coffeehouse; a bakery; an Italian restaurant, Vittorino’s Italian Cucina; a women’s clothing store, Her Majesty’s Boutique; and three loft apartments on the third floor. The grant funding will help train and prepare business owners, as well as offer funding for rental supplements and equipment purchases.

“These new businesses will add to the charm of downtown and fulfill several long-term goals,” says Sweetwater Main Street Director Jane McGuire. All 5 businesses expect to be open and running by January 2018. The perks of doing business in Sweetwater include beautification efforts, ongoing applications and awards of grant funding, both from the local Main Street committee and the State of Tennessee, as well as cooperation from the City of Sweetwater. “We look forward to welcoming these new business owners to Sweetwater. Sweetwater is a great place to shop and visit, but it’s also an amazing place to be a business owner,” says Sweetwater Mayor Doyle Lowe. So come visit us and step back in time to our little version of Main Street, USA ©Disney. We’d love to have you!

ennington Home began as a small pop-up shop with a big and welcoming heart, opening its doors to the public in March 2016 in Madisonville. Owner Adam Pennington has always been passionate about home décor and wanted to pursue a store, which recently led to a new, permanent location in Sweetwater, Tennessee! To celebrate the new location’s grand opening, Adam and his wife, Kristin, wowed locals and visitors alike with a magical Christmas-themed open house. The store was like a winter wonderland, filled with whimsical woodland creatures and elegant décor. Live Christmas music welcomed guests into the store, and an array of finger foods ensured they had plenty of energy to browse the array of decorative offerings. From adorable, hand-crafted nativity scenes to Father Christmas figurines, Pennington Home’s open house abounded with design inspiration. And inspiration is at the heart of this little shop. According to Adam, the goal is that when people come inside the store, what they see can be recreated in their own homes. “That is our hope,” he says. “That people come in here and are inspired.” In addition to evolving from pop-up shop to permanent storefront, they’ve also added baby and interior services to the new location. Their goal is to keep sustainable products but also have a mission behind them. Keep an eye out soon for their upcoming website and online sales, and in the meantime, you can follow Pennington Home on Instagram and Facebook or visit them in Sweetwater! 305 N. A Very Special Winter Wedding A December wedding can certainly give the “most wonderful time of the year” new meaning! Alexis and Andy Donegan were married on December 10, 2016, at Black Fox Farms in Cleveland, TN. The bride and groom wanted to support local businesses as much as possible in planning their wedding. The wedding Coordinator was Donna Bridges at Bella Cross Wedding & Event Planning in Athens. BrittanyPhotographs provided photography services, while Eva’s Bakery in Etowah did the catering. The bouquets, boutonniere and the greenery used for centerpieces were made by Rebecca Houk at Goins’ Creations. The groom and groomsmen wore tuxedos from Johnson Department Store in Etowah, and the bride’s beautiful dress was from Ever After Bridal & Formal Wear in Cleveland, TN. The Donegans will surely always cherish the memories from their very special winter wedding and all the wonderful people and businesses who helped make it happen!

Oh, Christmas Tree A Peek Inside the Atkins Family Home Photographed By Abby Swabe

F

ew things are more memorable than decorating the tree at Christmastime. The home of Dustin and Stephanie Atkins is no different. They’ve taken care to make sure each tree is decorated with their overall theme in mind, a Traditional Christmas. Walking in, you’re greeted by a twelvefoot-tall tree with charming traditional ornaments. Completing the Traditional Christmas look are burlap ribbons, red berries and unique antique touches. The shelf on the wall is actually an old honey bee box. Beside it sits an old milk can, providing an extra touch of color. The couple explained they love the way the old-world style of the staircase accents the décor to create a look that is uniquely their own. The mix of styles can be seen throughout the rest of the house, as well. In the formal dining room, a Winter Wonderland theme emerges. White ornaments and other decorations complement the elegant wainscoting and custom-built fireplace. Antique pieces like the wooden toolbox and large window from a local Presbyterian church bring in a sophisticated Christmas feel. The kitchen is the simplest room, for the sake of functionality. A bright pop of red on the island stands out amongst the elegant white cabinets.

The old wooden toolbox that sits in the center of the dining room table is a very sentimental piece to the family. It perfectly ties the dĂŠcor in the dining room with the rest of the house.

HOLIDAY 2018 MONROE LIFE

33

In the living room, the Traditional Christmas theme continues. The largest tree on the main floor stands out in the corner of the room and draws you into the space. Beside it is the grand fireplace, decorated with garland and accent trees. The built-in cabinets hold holiday accents, family photos from past Christmases, and a large Nativity scene. The family says that those are the two most important parts of the season: spending time with family and celebrating the birth of Jesus. The exterior of the home is just as inviting, with holiday arrangements hanging on the front door and decorated trees welcoming family and friends. The whole house is a wonderful mix of traditional charm with sentimental touches throughout that remind us what Christmas is truly about. Pictured center is the Atkins family: Stephanie, Dustin, Taylor and Miles.

Melt butter and add sugar, flour, brown sugar, vinegar, spices, cinnamon, caramel, butter, and stir all together. Roll out each cinnamon roll with flour until thin and layer the bottom of the pie dish with the flattened cinnamon rolls to create a bottom crust. Add apple mixture and roll the rest of the cinnamon rolls. Cut them into strips to make a basket weave on top of the pie. Bake for 25 minutes, then take out of the oven to drizzle caramel, cinnamon roll icing and sprinkle pecans on top and bake for another 20 minutes. Allow pie to cool and enjoy!

T

he Great Depression, wars and strife have all woven their way into history in the last century. When looking back, Madisonville native Juanita Weaver’s life testified to a more joyful time of life and learning. Early Hiwassee Grad, Ella Juanita Weaver was born on May 20, 1916, in Mascot, Tennessee. The first child to Allie and Harvey Weaver, Juanita loved to learn from a young age. Harvey worked in the mines in Mascot and would move his family from Tennessee to Pennsylvania and North Carolina to work in the mines. Early on, Juanita fostered her love for learning as she attended a school house in the Tevis Springs area and would quickly move to Madisonville Elementary School, although the switch

Juanita’s love for education continued to shine brightly as she graduated from Madisonville County Central High School in 1933 as Valedictorian. Weaver furthered her education and graduated two years later in 1935 from Hiwassee College with a certificate to teach. Juanita’s first job led her to a one-room schoolhouse in the Tellico Plains Mountains where she taught grades 1-6 and stayed with a local family in the area that she paid $10 a month for room and board. Her 7-year career in teaching took her to other teaching positions in Monroe and McMinn counties. She later went on to work for and retire at Aluminum Company of America. At the tender age of 13, Juanita accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in her family’s home. She was baptized and

joined Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Madisonville shortly after being saved. After joining the church, Juanita began serving immediately. She was a creative Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and was an active member of a missions organization, WMU. Juanita loved when her WMU family came to have bible study at her home. She was also a teacher for a boy’s disciple training program called Royal Ambassadors. She would hold socials at her house. She served the church by being the church clerk for many years. Juanita also loved to sing and play the piano and organ for her church. Juanita also loved children and taking care of her family. Juanita cared for her mother until her death and considered her mother a very close friend. Juanita continued her love for learning in her late adult years

by collecting information on her family’s genealogy. She also loved to read and work on her computer. In her later years, Juanita enjoyed visits from church family and friends and enjoyed reading the Monroe Life Magazine. Mrs. Virginia Best of Madisonville was an at-home caretaker and dear friend to Juanita for 8 years. Although many things in the past 101 years have changed, a soul like Juanita’s found joy in all things. She possessed an attitude that reflects with joy and longed for the bright shores of her true Home. Juanita is a jewel in the Monroe County community who deserves to be celebrated for her life, love and joy. On May 30th, 2017, at 101 years old, Juanita said goodbye to her earthly home and hello to an eternal one. We celebrate her legacy of service.

Gardening

in Fall and Winter Written By Lisa Grugin

Fall is in the air, and many of us have gotten a fresh burst of energy to work in our yard! That is a good thing, because there are several jobs that could and should be done this time of year to help ensure that next year starts off well.

A

s always, the first thing that should be done is a good checkup. Take a nice morning stroll around your yard and make notes on things that you like or don’t like, things that did well or didn’t do well, and ideas that you have for next year. Check plants for signs of disease and insects. Look up for damage to trees, and down for mole tunnels or vole holes. Take you coffee or tea (or mimosa, it’s your yard) and spend a little quality time with nature. *The most important task after your checkup is a good cleanup! Pull out any remaining annuals, cut back perennials, get any disease or insect infested leaves up and away from your beds, pull up weeds, and clean up any other debris that will create hiding places for bugs or

46

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

fungal spores. You can also divide spring blooming and fleshy rooted perennials now to spread out or share. *Fall is a great time to add compost or leaf mulch to your beds. This does not mean you can let your leaves just pile up on top of your plants! At my house we rake or blow the leaves onto the lawn, run over them with the mower and then rake/blow them back onto the flower beds. Don’t pile it more than 3” deep, and make sure you haven’t buried the crown of perennials or heaped it around the trunks of trees and shrubs. *Fall is also a great time to mulch if you didn’t get it done in the spring. 3” of mulch will keep soil temperature and moisture levels more stable. Remember

to make donuts, not volcanoes around your trees! Volcanoes make a great hiding place for insects and voles and encourage trees to put out air roots. If you did mulch in the spring, take a rake and fluff it up. Old mulch becomes very hard and compacted over the summer. *October tends to be our driest month. This means you need to water! Sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but are woefully inadequate for trees and shrubs. You don’t know how many times I hear the words “but I have a sprinkler” when people are asking why their plants died! Trees and shrubs need 1” of rainfall per week, and if we aren’t getting it, you have to supplement by hand watering or using a soaker hose. Keep in mind that a large shrub can

drink 5 gallons of water a day when it is hot, and a tree can drink 35 gallons! *If you need to plant trees and shrubs, fall is the best time. 85% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter, so getting them in now will give them a head start on next year. It is helpful, however, to get them in before the soil temperatures drop too low. You should also go back and read the last paragraph, because you must provide them with adequate water while they are developing roots. If you don’t, you will be replanting in the spring! *You also have time to plant pansies for color throughout the fall, winter and spring. These are my favorite flowers because they give us such a long bloom period! They are heavy feeders, so use a slow release fertilizer when you plant or fertilize every couple of weeks to keep them blooming. *Don’t forget your containers! You can do some stunning displays with plants, pumpkins and other things from your

yard. I’m going to talk about a couple of holiday plants before I finish, because I have seen some really tragic things happen to them over the years. *Let’s start with Poinsettias, because they are terribly temperamental. First of all, remember that they are a tropical plant! They will not withstand temperatures below 50 and will turn black in less than a minute of freezing temperatures. They are very fragile, so they must be put somewhere out of the way. They also are susceptible to root rot, so they should be removed from the foil wrap when watering. This is the one plant that I suggest you never buy from a box store because they need the care provided by a greenhouse. Last year, I saw a lady load 25 huge Poinsettias into the back of her truck at Costco on a very chilly day. Those babies were dead before she got to the red light. Buy from someone that knows how to grow them and knows how to tell you to take care of them! *A Christmas cactus is much less temperamental and one of my favorite

plants. Most problems occur because they are called a “cactus,” but they don’t like direct sun and they don’t like to dry completely out. They are a tropical cactus, not a desert cactus. It is also a bit tricky to get them to rebloom “on time.” They are light and temperature sensitive, so they set bud when they are getting less than 11 hours of light or when temperatures drop below 60. This can be difficult to achieve in your house! Customers also tend to keep them in the same pot for too long because they can live for decades. 5 years is about the limit. *I could also tell you horror stories about Christmas trees being spray painted, but instead I will encourage you to buy from a reputable dealer and keep your tree watered! Ours all come from a family tree farm in North Carolina and will be cut for us on November 15th. We also have freshly cut greenery and wreaths. That is all I have for now. Remember that we are open year round, so don’t hesitate to call or stop by if we can help you. We want you to have a beautiful yard!

A Randy Boyd Thanksgiving Written By Sydnee Brashears

T

hanksgiving is a time to sit back and think of all that you’ve been blessed with throughout the year, and to spend time with those close. That can be difficult, however, when it feels like all life has handed you is a pile of lemons and a mason jar. For Randy Boyd, candidate for governor, one of his most difficult Thanksgivings was in 1991. Back then, his company of selling fences was just getting off the ground, and he’d only recently stopped doing all his business out of the back of a Dodge Maxi van. He’d decided to get an office after he started selling the Radio Fence in June. It was modest, a former condemned 40-ft tractor trailer, just enough space for him and his seven employees. The sales had not been going well. While products were selling like coffee on a Monday morning, the company was underprepared and quickly overwhelmed by the volume they needed to produce. “Dozens of

50

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

customers call[ed] us first thing Monday morning,” Randy Boyd said, “screaming and demanding their Radio Fences. Pretty much everything [was] going wrong. We couldn’t get supplies, we couldn’t ship product, and it was hard to pay the bills, and the product didn’t work. So other than that, it was great.” That Thanksgiving week, Boyd promised to sell 200 units. With the backlog of circuit boards from their supplier, SDX, the company had only been able to make 50 by Wednesday morning. More circuit boards wouldn’t arrive until 7:00 that night, despite one of the employees, Howard, helping SDX with the demand. With customers threatening to sue for the long wait, Boyd and his employees had little choice but to work through the night to get the products in. Their deadline was 11pm. Then Boyd, at 4 in the morning, would take them to be shipped. “You would meet the most interesting people at a bus station at 4 in the morning!” Boyd laughed. They were soon joined by a dealer in

Nashville, named Chris Beckman, who offered to help in exchange for the six receivers he needed for his own customers. By the time the circuit boards arrived, the two technicians had already gone home for the holiday. The only people left were Howard, Boyd, two salesman, Chris, and Kim, the receptionist. But the technicians had taken something valuable with thema heightened knowledge of how to build and test the product. “I had an idea of how to make it,” Boyd said. But it wasn’t as concrete an idea as they would’ve liked. It was a long night for all of them. One of the most important tests in an invisible electric fence, which the Radio Fence was, is the electricity output. It must shock enough to startle, but not enough to seriously damage whatever it’s supposed to shock. When the technicians left, however, they took the knowledge of how to safely test the mild correction. It would have to be done organically. Kim volunteered to be the resident guinea pig, with the occasional second

opinion from one of the others. Luckily for her, only ~50% produced a shock. By the end of their deadline, the group had completed 30 units to be shipped and sold. Before their 4 am shipping schedule, the company decided to have their first company Thanksgiving Dinner. It was nothing fancy. They went over on Asheville Highway to a smoky bar and grill known as Armstrong’s, and had beers and cheeseburgers. Though it wasn’t traditional, to the group in that pool hall, it was special. “I don’t recall our sales, our profit, my salary, or any other financial measure from the first year.” Boyd said, leaning back in his chair. “However, the memory of that night, the camaraderie with my associates and the friendship we had will last forever.” What he remembers most clearly about that Thanksgiving night, after the crunch, are the faces of the people he shared a booth with. This, beyond his company’s financial success or his own profit, is what he treasures the most. “You are rich by the relationships you have.” Boyd said. This Thanksgiving, you don’t need for everything to go right. Sometimes you can’t afford the $30 deluxe Butterball turkey, or you’ll be late and miss the yeast rolls, or the s’more pie will be just a tad too sweet. But it’s not the food or the location that makes Thanksgiving a special holiday. It is the company you keep. So whether it’s a casual friendsgiving or a big family reunion, take time to be thankful for the lemons and the mason jar– you’d be surprised how long they’ll keep.

First United Methodist Church 10Years After the Fire Written By Katherine Cox Photos Provided By First United Methodist Church Madisonville

O

n December 10, 2007, Alan Johnson got a call that First United Methodist Church in Madisonville, where he is Trustee Chair, was on fire. He could see it from a distance, fearing the whole of downtown would be ablaze, but when he arrived, the fire department had contained the fire to the church sanctuary. As the ten-year anniversary approaches this December, Mr. Johnson remembers, “The sickening part of watching was knowing I was helpless as the fire spread very quickly, reaching the Education Building behind the sanctuary. This fire was so hot it became apparent that the only thing to do was try and save the newly built education section of the church.” But the education building, miraculously, was not the only thing to survive the fire. Sue Hamilton, the Choir Director, arrived at the scene

52

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

with a sinking heart. She knew the piano, organ and years of collected music would not survive the blaze, but then, she says, “It was at that moment I thought of our handbells. There was no way they could survive the heat.” As Christmas was near, the handbells would be an important part of the planned worship service, but the devastation in the choir room was horrific. One of the firefighters volunteered to go in and see if anything was salvageable, and it was then that, under the protection of debris, he uncovered four charred handbell cases. The bells were a little singed but otherwise perfectly fine. Sue states, “You know, as I think back, recovering the handbells, and having them as part of our Christmas service, that was probably the beginning of our church rising from the ashes and starting over.” The bells are still in use today, a sign of steadfast and ringing faith, in the rebuilt First United Methodist Church.

Bert’s

Hometown Grill R A B TES E L E C

C

elebrating 30 years of bringing quality food to the Monroe County area, Bert’s Hometown Grill is more than just a restaurant -- it’s your hometown home away from home! The building itself, known as the Meek Hicks residence, was built in 1917 for Colonel J.C. Spurling, Monroe County Court Clerk. The historic home changed hands many times over the years until 1987, when it was purchased by partners Ken White and Bert Blankenship. Bert had a food service degree from UT and was working at a restaurant in Sweetwater when Ken, a fellow UT alumni, approached him about opening a pizzeria in Madisonville. They opted to start off as a Stefano’s Pizzeria at the old farmhouse location. They opened for business on October 5, 1987, and thrived for over a decade. As competition began moving into the area, however, they added a grill and transitioned in 1998 to Bert’s Hometown Grill. Since the name change, renovations

56

MONROE LIFE HOLIDAY 2018

have included four additions to the building, with the latest being a new porch. Despite the updates, however, the 100-year-old house retains its charm, and the food and customer service at Bert’s is always top-notch. According to Bert, “We are very grateful for our wonderful customers.” Those customers combined with a fabulous management team have contributed to Bert’s being one of the longest privately held restaurants in Monroe County. Bert says many employees, from local high schoolers to adults, have helped the restaurant become the success it is today. “We are very proud to be a part of Madisonville and hope to serve the community for many years to come.” Bert’s is open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 9pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm. Their Party Room can be reserved for church functions or family get togethers. Find your new favorite place to eat at Bert’s Hometown Grill!
