“Art has always been a part of me and how I express myself. In my exhibition, two topics that I explored was nature and humor. A huge thank you to Ms. Wepsic for helping me grow to the artist I am today. Hope you all enjoyed the exhibition.”
KYRA SPENGLER ‘16r Kyra Spengler’s work includes figure drawings, portraits and different cartoon-like sketches. Her origininality and technique exceed expectations and we hope you attended the exhibition!
SADIE TRAYLOR ‘16 Sadie, an avid photographer, strengthened her love for the art during the 2015 Bishop’s India Trip, where she documented the people and her experiences. Since then, she has been actively shooting beautiful portraits for friends and family. We hope you attend the remainder of the exhibition.

As a long time athlete and scholar, but not a self-proclaimed artist, I never really wanted to take formal art lessons, nor had time for my own artistic explorations. But the Bishop’s art requirement allowed me to explore my own artistic side. I’ll admit that it wasn’t easy starting in an area about which I knew little. But in the end, Bishop’s ceramics class opened doors for me. My short and non-illustrious arts career began in my sophomore year. I wasn’t exactly excited to begin art classes during my sophomore year. At first, ceramics started out like any other class: attendance, submission and grade. But, what I learned came later in an area I surprisingly did not expect. That very same year, I began to take a keen interest in computer science. Mr. Gercke, the ceramics teacher, was given a grant for a 3-D printer that allowed students to print their own designs. I took a special interest in the printer, as it was related to my interest in all things having to do with computers.
3D design by Linette Pan ‘17
Knowing me, I was probably just looking for an excuse to create “art” using something I didn’t even consider an artistic medium. Whatever the reason, I spent many hours on my computer dragging and moving different pieces of my designs. I never would have thought that computer is related to ceramics, yet it led me down the path of 3-D printing. I was surprised by the connection, and grew appreciative of what The Bishop’s School has to offer. To this day, I am still unsure of my relationship with the arts. But without the Bishop’s arts requirement, I would have never had the wonderful experience I had with 3D printing.
THE BISHOP‘S SCHOOL
THE IMPORTANCE OF ART by Charmaine Hiller ‘16
Being a performing and visual artist offers me the ability to express my feelings through so many varying mediums and I have access to all of those opportunities here at Bishop’s. I have partaken in a dance course and painting/ drawing course each semester, and while this gives me the opportunity to do what I love, it isn’t easy to find time to explore both parts of my artistic identity. Any type of art requires dedication and commitment, but also a lot of after-class hours. Because Bishop’s is not an arts high school, most faculty are not fully aware or understanding when it comes to how time consuming arts can be. The hardest thing for me has been learning to balance my artistic and academic life, while having to defend my choice to attend a college preparatory school rather than an arts school.

NICOLE ELLSWORTH ‘21 The reason is this: art is not the only thing that defines me or that I am interested in. My inspiration for choreography and painting come from information and stories that I learn about in history, English, or world languages. When you are an artist, you are more than technically skilled at your craft, you are a person who is so fascinated by everything that you just can’t help but express it through as many mediums as you are capable of. Another struggle for me has been understanding why there is such a wide gap between the visual and performing arts and why the community tends to show appreciation for performances rather than galleries. In my exploration of art I have found that visual and performing art are so closely related and intertwined yet my feeling at Bishop’s is that they exist in two separate worlds. My hope for this community is that artists see each other more and that non-artists recognize more the place that we have in this academic centric space.
