Our theme this year is, “The Giving

Tree,” by Shel Silverstien because we believe that giving is more important right now than ever. Just like the tree, we as a group strive to give our apples, our shade, and our wood, to those who need it.

AN INTRO

FROM MS. BRODERICK Being the facilitator for our Peer Support group brings me so much joy. I am consistently impressed by the creativity, honesty, and willingness to serve our community that I see in our students. We start each class sharing how we are doing and I love hearing the good, the bad, the funny and everything in between that is going on for everyone. Each student has a unique personality and charm that adds so much to the dynamic of our group. This year, the students have had to think outside the box to continue the good work of connection in our community that they are accustomed to doing. While it hasn’t been easy, the students have pulled together in a way that has made me so proud. The students have also seized opportunities to work with new students, faculty and even parents this year. They have truly taken on the idea that everyone in our Bishop’s community is on the same team and we have to work together to get through this strange stretch of time in our world. Sometimes the students call me the leader of Peer Support. I am anything but. I may talk the most or make the most rules, but it is all of them who are the leaders and I am just grateful to be along for the ride.

ISSUE I NOVEMBER 2020

OCTOBER 1ST ACCORDING TO AVERY ZOLFAGHARI ‘21 The morning of October 1st I woke up feeling anxious, like the comfort of my enclosed world was now being destroyed. It was crazy how little I learned to depend upon people and how much I could do on my own now. After all the complaints at Zoom and being a senior with no special privileges, I didn’t want to go. I knew that I should because I needed some personto-person interaction, but my capacity for social interactions had dropped drastically and the thought of all the little conversations only made my heart race. Getting ready, I realized how numb I became to the title of “senior.” I was a senior? No. I have college applications due this month? No way. My skirt didn’t fit anymore. My sister’s old maroon polo still had wrinkles in it from March 13th or being stuffed in the back of her drawers: I couldn’t tell. I left before my parents could ask me too many questions or find significance where I didn’t feel any. I had to get to school an hour and a half early to find parking: and when my friends and I met up, I finally felt normal(ish). From there, I remember fragments: making awkward conversation at three-person tables, signing my name on the senior bench, looking at the painted rec room and just laughing. At the end of the day, I got into my car and just closed my eyes. I never thought that normalcy would be this hard.

Bishop’s has done a fantastic job at trying to accommodate a normal, scholastic lifestyle during these times. But after months of quarantine and disconnection, which we finally feel used to, our mental perceptions of the world have shifted. What do we even consider normal anymore? And how can things ever “go back to how they were before” after what we’ve been through already? Things have gotten better since the first time I went but the shock of change caused me to have an interesting experience mentally. Bishop’s continues to support me and makes the campus a welcoming place to return: things have already gotten better and will continue on this trajectory, so we can have a senior year to remember. - Avery
