If you’re not willing to put in the work to get better, you won’t get better. It’s as simple as that Great coaching and a positive learning environment made skill acquisition fairly easy. We’ve come a long way.

I enjoy tennis due to the different challenges it presents that are different than other sports.

My favorite memory was when When Jacob Lang smashed two racquets out of rage.

Mine was making new friends and experiencing what it’s like to be on a successful team overall has been a lot of fun. My favorite memory; however, would have to be when Bauman and I were practicing together and he came up to me and said “god dude, you’re not even that good, you just make everyone else play worse.”

Boy’s tennis started on March 30 this year but most of the team started practicing before then. Team bonding consisted of team dinners and practicing outside of scheduled practices. GHS was able to get new courts last year thanks to fundraisers like selling booster club raffle tickets. The Booster Club also helps with all the team’s expenses (ie. transportation, equipment, uniforms, etc.). The boys participate in a number of meets, however Homestead and Nicolet are thought of as the most challenging. The meet against Cedarburg was just this past week. Junior Connor Neeck beat Gavin Stumpf his first and third match, winning the set. These meets are good competition to prepare the team for post season. 1. Junior Thomas Makela practices his underhand for upcoming meets. 2. Senior Ben Bauman returns the ball on the new courts.

Boys Track

The boys track team started the season off with a boom at Homestead’s indoor invite, and continued to improve as the season came to an end. The upperclassmen made huge strides on last season, and the freshman learned the events that are their strong points. Last season the 400 meter relay team made of Samuel Miller, Ryan Melotik, Spencer Orten, and Nicholas Fullington competed at the state trials, and expect to again this season. They also had one of the fastest times in Wisconsin. Senior Alec Wieinhold competed at state last year in the 1600 meter run. Wienhold stated “We look forward for a strong rest of the season as the boys have a great chance in going to state again this season. Everyone is excited for the final meets of the season! 1. Senior Samuel Miller taking his first attempt of the day in high jump. 2. Junior Nicholas Fullington recieving the handoff from senior Spencer Orten at Homestead. 3. Sophomore Tigran Ovsepyan, and junior Benjamin Schroer taking the lead in the mile. 4. The pole vaulting team made up of senior Jonathan Lindeman, freshman Benjamin Weishan, junior Nicholas Mills, sophomore Harrison Niswonger, and junior Daniel McAdams posing before their attempts in the pit at Homestead.

College Bound & Are you confused about figuring out what college to go to in the next couple of years? Does it seem like the pressure is on to decide on a school or major? Check out where your fellow classmates are planning on going. Also check out where your very own teachers went and what they planned on majoring in before they taught the classes they do today! Kaitlyn Larson and Emily Mueller

Taylor Hafemeister wants to attend UW Madison and major in Psychology. “I think getting into Madison shows how hard you tried and how much potential you have for the future.”

Hailey Hubacek plans on attending Concordia University to major in Education. “The campus is beautiful and it’s close enough to home where I plan on living to save money.”

Megan Mueller is going to MATC this fall to study childcare. “I love working with children and it would be great to turn my passion into a career.”

Jacob Lang wants to go to University of Minnesota at Twin Cities and major in pre-med. “It’s a great school and has the degree that I want to study. Also, it’d be great to meet new people from a different state.”

& College Found Mrs. Grant planned to go to Minnesota State at Mankato to major in English and Physical Education. Instead she went to UW Eau Claire. “Majoring in Biology and Broad Field Science was definitely the best decision I’ve made for myself and future students.” Mrs. Wahl had multiple school offers to play basketball, she ended up going to Nebraska to study business. Eventually she decided to change her major to Education. “I flipped a coin to decide between teaching English or Social Studies!” Mr. Maney attended UW Whitewater, majoring in Education “I wanted to play football for Notre Dame but I realized this probably wouldn’t happen.”

Mrs. Weidner wanted to go to UW Eau Claire for a marketing degree, which she did. But ended up switching to UW Milwaukee and got her major in Education. “I realized teaching was much better suited for my personality and my needs.” Mrs. Measner went to UW Eau Claire, she knew she wanted to major in Social Studies, and after taking some college Econ classes, she chose to teach that course. “Eau Claire was known as the Harvard of the Midwest at that time.”

Adventures Looking for something fun to do this summer other than watch netflix? Here are some ways to put a little more sizzle in these hot summer days to come!

Around town: Shop Local Take some time this summer to take a look at some local shops, such as The Grafton Arts Mill, Sweettrio, or Senior Rachel Weidner’s favorite, Slow Pokes Local Food! “Slow Pokes is a great place if you’re looking for naturally healthier food alternatives,” said Wiedner. “I work there, and I love how we make a lot of our own food-- like our brownies, they’re so delicious.” Slow Pokes is a great place if you’re looking for natural and organic foods.

“We sell gluten free, vegan, and paleo food ranging from ingredients to snacks to entire meals.” Keeping things as local and homemade as possible, Slow Pokes is one of the few places around here that can give customers a lot of new information on healthier options. “Also, we give a lot of free samples, people seem to like that.”

Farther from home: Explore MKE You might just find some hidden gold nestled in Brady and Farwell if you venture out to the east side of Milwaukee this summer! MKE savvy senior Kara Olds is a great person to ask if your looking for somwhere fun. “I suggest Northpoint, the ice cream place right on the beach. It’s super fun cuz you order through the window and eat outside. “The Comet Cafe (which is popular among many GHS students) has food that is SO bomb and you can eat at the counter!” Between the amazing fries and cupcakes, Comet has it all. “My FAVORITE place to go is Ian’s pizza-- giant delicious slices of

pizza and if you go there late it’s bumping with people and good music. As far as places to hang out, go behind the Marcus Amphitheater at the Summerfest Grounds. There’s a walking path along the lake with the best views of the city. “It’s super fun and wonderfully scenic,” Olds added.

Futuristic Expectations Entertainment has lead us to have unbelievable expectations of modern day technology. The bulk of popular entertainment revolves around the future and leads us to have have high expectations for modern day technology and society. However, the years of entertainment have only lead us to solid disappointment as society is not what it was expected to be. The 1980s Sci Fi fantasy series Back to the Future promised that 2015 would be accompanied by the electronics of our dreams. Electronics were in nearly everything— from clothes to garbage cans. No longer did drivers need roads, as flying cars filled the skyways. Hoverboards, automatic dog walkers, video telephones and even a female president accompanied the Back to the Future vision of 2015. However, now that 2015 is upon us we realize that it’s all within a fantasy world, and modern day technology does not meet the hype. While most are fascinated by the newest forms of technology in the IPhone 6, some dedicated fans quarrel about not obtaining their hoverboards or flying cars. Even though our expectations from Back to the Future have not been met, we still grasp at the idea of hoverboards and holograms. Recent television shows, such as Parks and Recreation, allow us to imagine a more short term future--2017. The world of 2017 is full of drones and holographic telephones and tablets— a more realistic version of the future. Meet the Robinsons and The Jetsons allow for a more long term view on the future, allowing

for another 20-50 years of technological advancements. We live in a world where technology and society continuously change. Though not obvious in the short term, if we look back 100 years it’s clear how much the world has changed. The internet was just invented in 1983— a mere 32 years ago— and the cell phone in 1973. It wasn’t until 1992 when the first touch screen cell phone was invented, and even then the technology and quality was not nearly as superior as it is now. The issues with these predictions is that we have not allowed technology to develop enough. Since we all expect our society and technology to unfold a certain way, we don’t do anything about it— we all expect other people to do it. People have sat around complaining about how technology has not met their expectations. In order for society to one day have easily accessible flying cars or hoverboards we need to create an emphasis on technology and engineering throughout schools. The last generation made good strides to fulfil the predictions, but they didn’t meet our expectations. So what’s next? Will these hopes for society and technology ever be fulfilled? Will we ever see the 2015 we expected? Or will our modern day technology never meet the expectations set by years of the pop culture entertainment. If more people are open for a change in society and new technology then maybe the next round of technology and societal expectations set by these shows will be met.

Black Hawk of the Month Haley Bikman

Mr

Social Studies Teacher Mr. Mike Maney and sophomore Ariana Stark were randomly selected as our Black Hawks of the Month. We asked them a assortment of questions to get to know them better.

Pepsi or Coke:

Mr. Maney: “Coke if we’re talking about the colas but otherwise it’s Mountain Dew.” Ariana: “Coke because I prefer diet, tastes way better.”

Preferable Grade:

Mr. Maney: “I like them all for different reasons. I enjoy getting the opportunity to work with students I’ve known for years.” Ariana: “I’m excited for senior year because it’s the last year of high school before you get to go off on your own and actually be considered an adult.”

Dream Lifestyle:

Mr. Maney: I’m living it. Getting to come here everyday doesn’t feel like work, and then getting to coach afterwards.” Ariana: “I want to be able to travel and see new things. I love meeting new people and seeing their lifestyle. I want to try exciting things like bungee jumping and sky diving. I want to be able to live my life and have fun.”

Favorite Food/Restaurant:

Mr. Maney: “Pizza. Period. But if I had to pick a second, Hue in Bay View would be my choice. It’s Vietnamese and has some to die for spicy shrimp, I might just go there tonight and get some.” Ariana: “McDonald’s because I get 50% off and I’m already broke so it really helps.”

16

Irrational Fear:

Mr. Maney: “I will never say ghosts or aliens don’t exsist because I don’t want them to come and prove me wrong.” Ariana: “When someone is walking behind me down the stairs. I literally jump down the flight of stairs and run because I hate when people are behind me.”

Iphone or Andriod:

Mr. Maney: “Iphone because that’s what my wife got. She got it, so fine.” Ariana: “Iphone, great camera quality and it just seems more appealing to me.”
