CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE

elcome to Bloor West Village, the world’s first Business Improvement Area (BIA), established in 1970, and one of the most successful BIAs in the City! Many refer to Bloor West Village as A Small Village in a Big City having over 400 diverse shops, restaurants and professional services in the marketplace to serve you. Bloor West Village is a non-profit organization of the businesses and its property owners, with an operating budget of $400,000.00 of their own money. The primary goals of the BIA are to promote business activities in Bloor West Village, keeping the area vibrant, safe and beautiful. It not only benefits the businesses but also benefits the whole community it serves! Please keep this Community Directory handy, as it will help you to access all the great things our area has to offer. Please support your neighbourhood businesses by shopping locally. It helps to make it a great place to work, shop and raise a family! The BIA brings you many festivals and events throughout the year, please see page 8 for a list of events. Don’t miss the Village Festival on Saturday, July 19, lots of fun for adults and children, see you at the Traditional Street Dance in the evening at the bandstand, Windermere and Bloor! Be sure to attend the lighting ceremony of the Cavalcade of Lights at the Alex Ling Foundation (Bloor & Jane), on Wednesday evening, November 28, for Community Caroling and the arrival of Santa Claus - Christmas in the Village! We have now updated the 60 solar powered gas lanterns in the village, they are much brighter. We are still waiting for the CSA to approve the next generation solar panels that will capture more sunlight per unit. We wish to emphasize that all of our installations are 100% SOLAR POWERED - no more paying hydro bills and no more burning of fossil fuels! We are very proud that Bloor West Village BIA is the first community to undertake such a energy saving project. Many thanks to Mr. Alex Ling for his vision and initiative in pioneering the solar powered project. There seems to be some concerns of the over development in the Bloor West area. I wish to point out that in 1970, when the BIA began, there were at least 6 gas stations scattered along the south side of Bloor Street. There was the abandoned streetcar turn-around at Bloor and Jane, currently the sight of the medical building. The block that the LCBO is located on Bloor Street, between Glendonwynne Road and Kennedy Avenue, was a used car lot with bare light bulbs strung right across the whole block! Number 2 Jane Street to number 18 Jane Street did not exist. In the past 14 years, all these properties have been redeveloped with the exception of the Esso Gas Station. All these developments taken place within the boundaries of Bloor West Village BIA are both MODERATE and REASONABLE!

BIA EVENTS 2014 Easter Promotion • Saturday, April 19

Look for the Easter bunnies along Bloor Street with chocolates for the children.

Mother’s Day Promotion • Saturday, May 10 Bloor West Village celebrates Mother’s Day with couples dressed in formal attire giving away roses to all the special mothers along Bloor Street.

June Sidewalk Sale • Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, June 19-22 It’s that time of the year when the retailers offer their best deals of the year! Come and join the fun! There will be clowns, balloons, and strolling musicians on Saturday.

July Street Festival • Saturday, July 12 The Village Festival is our biggest event of the year! We will have five side street closures for this event. Free entertainment for the whole family: Kiddie car rides, Kiddie bouncer, clowns, balloons, strolling musicians, face painting and character sketchers. At the bandstand, we will be bringing back our Baby Contest followed by ethnic dances, stage shows, lucky draw and more throughout the day! In the evening, join us for our traditional Street Dance with a live band.

Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival & Sidewalk Sale • Fri-Sun September 12 - 14 Bloor Street will be closed to vehicular traffic. Come and join the fun with our 3-day sidewalk sale with deals galore, accompanied by our annual Ukrainian Parade on Saturday at 11am, running from High Park along Bloor Street to Jane Street. Join us Sunday morning at 10:30am for the Ecumenical Church Service at Jane and Bloor.

CHAIRPERSON Although Paula has retired from her lifelong jewellery business, she still owns her building and she also resides in the Village. Currently, Paula works part-time in the Village and she is also working as a Marketing Consultant, representing one of her former suppliers, travelling extensively throughout the GTA visiting clients. This gives Paula a great insight and opportunity to compare the success of Bloor West Village BIA versus many neighbouring business communities. In order to maintain the success story of our BIA and to compensate for the ever changing landscape on our streets, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We must continue to look to the future while respecting the past!â&#x20AC;? Back in 1986, Paula took over McLellan Jewellers from Neil McLellan, one of the co-founders of our BIA. She started off by volunteering her time to serve on committees and then the Board of Management. Paula is now on her 11th year as our BIA Chair! BIA BOARD OF MANAGEMENT ALEX LING

PAST-CHAIR Alex is the longest serving BIA board member in the world (over 40 years) and 24 years as our BIA Chair. Alex is also the founder of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) – 19 years as President. Currently there are more than 75 BIA’s in the City of Toronto and growing. Alex is the pioneer and the driving force behind the Solar Powered Conversion of our Tree Lighting and Gas Lanterns in Bloor West Village. No more hydro bills and no more burning of fossil fuel for the 60 Gas Lanterns in the Village! Among the numerous awards that Alex received for his volunteer services to the communities, he has a fountain named after him at Bloor and Jane in 2005 – one of the very few fountain in the City that operates all year round! Most recently, Alex received a 20 year pin from the Toronto Police Service for the longest serving member of the 11 Division’s Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). ABOUT THE ARTIST: DAVID CRIGHTON

Beginning at an early age, David Crighton’s fascination with art and architecture developed into a career which combines them both. Since graduating from Central Technical School, Toronto in 1974 David Crighton has been recording the architectural diversity of Toronto & Southern Ontario with his distinctive style. He currently lives and works in the High Park area. Pen and ink drawings and the addition of bright acrylic paint are the basic ingredients of David’s art-making techniques. In addition to that, he utilizes computer software to enhance the finished products by the insertion of custom lettering on various elements of the design such as billboards and newsboxes. Anything is possible. In addition to his artwork production and marketing he finds time to enjoy juggling (balls and clubs) and bashing away on his acoustic guitar.
