Ultra marathoner takes the ‘long’ way around Mauko overcomes loss, health challenges and pushes his limits in marathon races LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com High Park area resident Joe Mauko’s philosophy is to take the road less travelled. “My wife and I, we like to find out where others are going and head the other way,” Mauko told The Villager. And, so in typical fashion, the 43-year-old extreme runner tacked on an additional 70 kilometres before he even got to the starting line of Hamilton’s 30km Around the Bay Road Race on Sunday, March 30. “It was a journey,” said Mauko, who set out Saturday night at a solid pace through Etobicoke, Mississauga, along the Lakeshore to Oakville where he stopped downtown at a dessert spot where he downed a litre of water and a Coke and told his servers his story. He reached downtown Burlington early at 2 a.m. Everything was closed. And, so, in an effort to keep warm and rest, he took a power nap in a hospital ER waiting area. Two hours later, he was up and running where he met some friends in plenty of time to start the marathon. When it was all said and done, he had completed the 100/km in 12 hours. Mauko, a one-time top pole vaulter, former National Collegiate Athletic Association scholarship athlete and 1996 Olympic hopeful suffered a serious career-ending injury during the Olympic qualifier. In 2002, his father suffered a massive stroke and two years

later, passed away in his son’s arms. As he was helping his mother cope with the loss of her husband, Mauko was diagnosed with cancer. “To say my life was spiraling didn’t even scratch the surface,” Mauko said. “I thought, ‘Is this it? Is this life?’ My dad’s advice was always to get a good education, get a job and retire 40 years later. I thought, ‘They’re has to be more.’ I made a conscious decision to re-evaluate.” In January 2012, he decided he wanted to test himself both physically and mentally, even spiritually and took up running.

The father of two kids, seven and three, is able to juggle his training with the least amount of impact on his family by running as early as 4:30 in the morning and running again on his lunch hour and after his children are in bed. He also credits the Bank of Montreal, particularly the Dupont Street and Symington Avenue branch and Access to Network for helping him raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation. He is in the midst of a campaign to raise $50,000 Read about his next race across the Atacama Desert in Chile in October by visiting http://bit.ly/1oJLCuB

High Park resident and extreme runner Joe Mauko (front right) tacked on an additional 70 kilometres to Hamilton’s 30K Around the Bay Road Race on Sunday, March 30. Mauko is raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

The off-leash area in Baird Park has been re-opened since a dog owner discovered chocolate strewn across the ground and called police Sunday. Peter White, general supervisor, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, told The Villager that as of 10:15 Monday morning, the off-leash area is open after a thorough inspection and cleanup. As much was one cup of chocolate was recovered from the park, he said. Eleven Division police and City of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation department officials arrived at the park, at

Keele Street and Humberside Avenue, Sunday morning to find the chocolate scattered throughout the confines of the fenced-in area. A parks and recreation official retrieved the chocolate that was visible at the time and locked up the off-leash area. Det. Trudy Hughes of 11 Division told The Villager that there is no indication the chocolate was deliberately put in the park to harm dogs. So far, there have been no reports of any animals getting sick in connection to the chocolate. Chocolate is especially dangerous if ingested by dogs because it contains a naturally occurring stimulant called ‘theobromine,’ according to veterinarian Dr. Scott Bainbridge of the Dundas West Animal Hospital. There is a higher dose in dark chocolate, he added. “It stimulates the nervous system and gets the heart racing,” he said. “The natural rhythm of the heart gets

mixed up.” Dogs have a chocolate radar, warned Bainbridge. “They’ll sniff it out through Christmas wrapping,” he said. If your dog has ingested chocolate, Bainbridge advises calling the vet immediately. “Keep the chocolate wrapper so we know what kind of chocolate the dog has eaten,” he said. “There’s a calculation we do based on the dog’s size and weight.” The first thing a vet will do is induce vomiting, then administer what’s called liquid charcoal that binds and neutralizes any remaining chocolate in the stomach. The key is to call the vet as soon as possible. A dog who has ingested chocolate could exhibit a variety of symptoms, including hyper salivating, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle twitching and hyperactivity.

T

he door to a very unique opportunity opened this week for some 20,000 people across Ontario with the launch of the volunteer recruitment campaign for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games. It’s a great chance for residents young and old to build organizational and leadership skills that could lead to job opportunities. It’s also beneficial to the city, to be able to develop an engaged, experienced volunteer contingent that not only contributes to the strength of our community today, but one that develops a legacy of volunteerism that can be called upon for future events – at the local level or again on the world stage. For these Games, there will be volunteer positions across 16 municipalities in all our view aspects of the events, from antidoping and medical services, Residents can protocol and the Games-time service, to ticketing, venue contribute to news management and ushers at strength of city events. Positions start as early as this September. If you have the time, skills and passion to spare, it’s an opportunity seriously worth considering. It’s a chance to be a part of an exciting, world-class event, to meet new people and learn new skills. But more than that, it’s a chance to directly contribute to the strength of our city and the bonds between our communities. When athletes arrive from the Caribbean and Central, South and North America next year, all eyes will be on our city and the collective force of ambassadors that will be welcoming them. Our communities are already rich with selfless volunteers who work tirelessly at the grassroots level, but this is Toronto’s chance to display our pride for all the world to see. As well, the province will be granting each volunteer at the Games a volunteer certificate, and the Ontario Student Assistance Program is offering benefits to make it easier for college and university students to get involved. Those with additional language skills are especially encouraged to apply. Saäd Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games, likens volunteers to the “backbone” of the event and said they will be behind every amazing moment we witness next year. The power of volunteerism cannot be understated, whether it’s on a small-scale locally or helping to host the largest sporting event Toronto’s ever seen. To apply, visit TORONTO2015.org/volunteer

Any mayoral race ‘blood bath’ will be of Rob Ford’s making M

ayor Rob Ford sought to set the tone early on in the 2014 mayoral race, when he predicted it would be a “blood bath.” That’s a crude metaphor for what this very Canadian race is turning into. In these early months, it seems that candidates for the top job are struggling to put as kind and civil a face on the proceedings as they can. It is almost well-mannered. Opponents of Ford have, it’s true, called out the mayor on his bad behaviour and other obvious shortcomings – but it seemed like they had to be goaded into doing so after a notable lack of carnage in the first, televised mayoral debate. Most of the real bloodletting has come from the sidelines: those ‘No Ford Nation’ Rob Ford parody signs showing up

david nickle the city on streets around the city, or that independently produced YouTube attack ad on John Tory, drawing ties between him and the Fords, reminding women voters of his advice on golf and success in business, and his well-compensated work with Rogers. From the candidates themselves, the aggression remains generally passive. Last week, Tory emerged with a code of conduct he’d follow as mayor – pledging to show up on time, not make enemies’ lists, not consort with criminals and obey the law – which if boiled down amounts to a sniping assertion to behave nothing like Ford. Olivia Chow, meanwhile,

has stuck to the line that the mayor’s a bad example for her grandchildren, then gone on to talk about child care, housing, business taxes, and public transit. Karen Stintz largely avoids the issue, and David Soknacki favours a lighter-touch version of those clever street-sign and YouTube snipes, combined with more direct questioning of the way in which the mayor’s using his office resources during the election period. One could almost anticipate a relatively genteel run up to the Oct. 27 election, were it not for the fact that all this messy characterbased stuff keeps coming up. On the weekend, Mayor Ford took budget chief Frank Di Giorgio on a very bad boy’s night out at the Air Canada Centre. While

there, the mayor threw a tantrum, fell into what sounds like a selfie-drivenmosh-pit of fans, and ditched poor Di Giorgio for a taxi full of revelers and a night on the town. Di Giorgio was left to mope off to his ward, where a small gathering of constituents were waiting for a visit from their mayor. At the end of it, even Di Giorgio – among the last of Ford’s supporters on council – admitted he had to rethink his loyalties. If the mayor keeps this kind of behaviour up, his prediction will come true, but not as he thinks. Whatever ‘blood bath’ comes of it, the wounds will be the mayor’s and they’ll be entirely self-inflicted. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Every aspect of our team is run by students,” said teacher Eric Halling. “Every part that’s made, every screw that’s turned, it’s by students. Yet, the Western Tech team’s approach seems to be paying off. “Warp 7” as they are called brought home the championship from the FIRST Robotics Waterloo Regional Competition at the University of Waterloo in March qualifying for the world championship in St. Louis, Missouri, at the end of April. “They have a lot of confidence and they want to do it their way,” Halling said. FIRST Robotics Canada releases its rule book for competition during the last week of students’ Christmas holiday and that’s when teams find out the “problem” they have to solve. With three players on the field, there are different functions that need to be completed, explained Halling. “Our guys recognize right away, ‘We’re not going to build the best shooter,’ because there are teams that are sponsored by NASA and GM,” he said. Bloor West working group shaped NDI’s condo approval: Doucette TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A proposed 11-storey condo with commercial units and full replacement of 24 rental units in a Bloor West building is a win-win thanks to a community working group process, reports the area councillor. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette moved a motion Tuesday morning endorsing city planners’ recommendation to approve North Drive Investments (NDI) Inc.’s proposal at 1990 Bloor St. W. and 26 Parkview Gardens. Etobicoke York Community Council unanimously endorsed Doucette’s motion without discussion or debate. Doucette reported it was her first start-to-finish involvement with a development application since she became councillor as she thanked city staff and residents for “all your help in making this a better development.”

In February, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) delivered an oral decision in a settlement hearing of NDI’s appeal to it after a non-decision by the city on the original application of 131 residential units, 24 of which would be rental, and 359 square metres of at-grade commercial space. Onsite parking had been increased from 67 to 76 spaces, with 118 bicycle spaces. OMB upholds appeal The OMB upheld NDI’s appeal. This week, Doucette reported concerned area residents had formed a working group, which met five times to discuss the development proposal. Residents also hired their own lawyer and planner to represent them at the OMB, she said. “We reduced it (building proposed specs) so much, we got no Section 37 money,” the councillor said of community

development monies developers typically pay. “But on 1990 (Bloor), my residents would rather have no money and a good development.” Last November, community council voted against Doucette’s motion to hire an outside planning consultant to continue negotiations in an attempt to reach a settlement with the condo developer: “... what you’ve heard from residents is we’re not quite there,” Doucette said. In the end, NDI reduced the building’s proposed height from 12 to 11 storeys, reduced the units from 131 to 104 and reshaped the building to reduce shadow impacts in High Park during negotiations. Bloor West Village Residents Association’s primary concern with the project had been its lack of compliance with midrise building guidelines, which specify a maximum height of eight storeys. ~ With files from Lisa Rainford

4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting is ranked as a top 20 roofing company in North America, when providing long term customer warranties. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 12 times (including 2013).

Community, family mourns passing of Junction butcher George Sakellariou LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Junction butcher George Sakellariou left a significant mark on the neighbourhood since opening the popular ‘Junction Meats’ at Dundas Street West and Indian Grove in 1979. Sakellariou passed away Monday, March 31, surrounded by his family after a short and difficult battle with lung cancer. Sakellariou is survived by his wife of 44 years, Anticoni, his daughter Angela, sonin-law Andrea and granddaughter Anastasia, along with his son Frank and his wife, Michelle. “He was a people person with a big heart. He helped a lot of people in the Greek community and in the Junction,” Frank said. “He was a hard worker.” Working since the age of 12, Sakellariou, who was

Frank. Their daughter, Angela, was born soon after. In 1978, he purchased the property at 2802 Dundas St. W. which became Junction Meats. Sakellariou worked at Canada Packers – now Maple Leaf Foods – at St. Clair and Dundas West streets. His shift ended at 3 p.m. Not ready to go home and wanting to make more money for his family, he got a job at a butcher shop at Queen Street West and Sherbourne Street for three years until he realized he wanted to open his own business. “He was really beloved in the neighbourhood,” said Frank of his father. He ran an old-school business. If a customer couldn’t pay him right away, he’d say, come back next week, recalled Frank. “He was a character. He’s gone, but he’s always with me,” he said.

GEORGE SAKELLARIOU

born 1945 in the village of Arbounas, Greece, went to work in construction with his brother in Athens. To help support his family, he was forced to find work as a pre-teen. “Some may say that was tragic, but that necessity created the work ethic in my father that led him to much success in his life,” Frank said in his eulogy. Sakellariou married Anticoni in 1969 before moving to Toronto with

Girls Government makes case for more bike lanes

Serving the GTA Since 1987

Always Get More at Lakeshore Honda Lakeshore Honda has been committed to providing top tier automotive sales and service since 1987. We invite you to experience for yourself the difference a family-run business with a commitment to customer satisfaction can make!

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

As part of local MPP Cheri DiNovo’s annual ‘Girls Government’ initiative, students from her Parkdale-High Park riding researched the topic of bicycle safety in honour of an elementary school teacher who died while cycling to work in November 2012. “After much discussion, our group decided on learning about bicycle safety,” said Grade 8 student and Girls Government representative Renee Deer during a press conference at Queen’s Park. “In November 2012, while cycling to work, Mr. Tom Samson, a dedicated Grade 2 teacher at Swansea Public School, died after his bicycle collided with two vans at the intersection of Lansdowne Avenue and Davenport Road. The girls felt that researching bicycle safety would help honour his memory.” Deer was one of 12 girls

from James Culnan Catholic School and Swansea Public School who met with DiNovo, NDP Women’s Critic and Whip, and her executive assistant Bhutila Karpoche, once a month starting in September to discuss social issues, the political environment and the role of women in politics. To improve bicycle safety, the girls are calling on the government to continue funding and improving cycling infrastructure to make streets safer while increasing cycling opportunities.

Only an event this huge can celebrate payments this great.

Many countries, like the Netherlands, have invested in their cycling infrastructure and have seen “tremendous” growth in the number of people who cycle to and from work, said student Karolina Zablotny. “It has been rewarding to take part in a program that encourages intelligent and energetic young women to engage in the democratic process” DiNovo said

>>>from page 1 the new development look like? And, the other issue is, what’s being done with (the new Brockton) school? What will it look like,” FitzPatrick said. “How can the community be involved?” Maria Rodrigues, school trustee for Ward 9 (Davenport), was invited to the meeting, but could not attend. FitzPatrick said the local trustee is hoping to organize a community meeting for the end of the month. The Bloor-Dufferin school lands were declared surplus in December of last year. The TDSB requires money to fund capital projects, however the board has been investigating making significant changes to the property since 2004. The process ramped up in 2010 as the TDSB conducted its Accommodation Review Committee, known as ARC, to make sure students’ needs could be met before schools were closed. This resulted in the closure of Kent P.S. in 2012, said Ashley Lindsay, a member of the Building a Better Bloordale Community group. The TDSB’s Local School Community Design Team, initiated in 2012, recommended students move into Brockton School, set out design principles and sketched out a site plan. At a public meeting in November last year, the TDSB announced its plans to sell the property and the Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC), an arm of the TDSB whose role is to manage real estate, put the land on the market through a process governed by provincial law. On the market since January, for the first 90

days only government entities – other school boards, universities, colleges, the City of Toronto – can bid. If the property doesn’t sell in 90 days, it will go on the open market to private bidders. This 90-day period ends April 18. As soon as she received notice the land was for sale, Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão said she immediately contacted all city departments to determine all available resources for purchasing the site. The city’s real estate services division, on behalf of Parks, Forestry and Recreation and Economic Development and Culture Divisions, wrote a letter expressing formal interest in the site. “We are interested. What a great site to do something innovative,” Bailão said. However, the school board and the TLC told the city they are not willing to entertain any bid for less than the entire 7.3 acre site.

...a natural tradition

Order your Easter Lamb Today... ...or Ham, Turkey, Duck and Aged Beef - Prime Rib Roast

HOLIDAY HOURS: Tues to Thurs 10am-6pm, Good Friday 9am-1pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Sun Closed Dear valued customers contrary to a recent article in the good life magazine, Butcher by Nature has not supplied any meats to Marky & Sparky’s Smokehouse since January, 2014. Thank you for your support.

The problem is, it is impossible for the City of Toronto to obtain necessary funding approval to submit an offer for the entire property by the deadline, she said. “The legislation needs to change,” she said. “We don’t have time to do a formal bid in 90 days.” Regardless of whether another school board purchases the property and it does not go on the open market or if it is bought by private developers, Bailão said she is committed to ensuring the community remain involved and consulted throughout the process. Local resident Erella Beaubella shared her concern for the fate of the site. “Once we sell this off to a developer, we’re not going to get these classrooms back,” she said to applause. NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities. Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy. THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project was assessed and an Environmental Project Report prepared in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. TTC appoints new service officer The TTC has appointed a new manager to help deal with surface transit operation. Rick Leary is the TTC’s new chief service officer, taking over from Chris Upfold who held the position on an interim basis. Leary, who most recently was the head of York Region Transit will now, among other duties, be responsible for managing Toronto’s bus and streetcar and Wheel-Trans fleets, said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross. One of Leary’s top priorities will be to improve punctuality and reliability of streetcar service, which according to a recent TTC survey is an increasing source of dissatisfaction among riders. Leary officially assumes his new role on May 5. completes ea on electrification wMetrolink

Metrolinx has completed work on a provincial environmental assessment (EA) studying future electrification of the Union-Pearson (UP) Express air rail link. The report still has to be approved by the provincial environment minister and funding has yet to be guaranteed for electrification, which would likely take three years

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT to complete. UP Express is promising frequent rail service between Union Station and Pearson International Airport, but has been a source of controversy for residents living along the Georgetown South GO rail corridor. They are concerned about the anticipated rise in carcinogenic diesel fumes from trains when the service goes online just before the 2015 Pan American Games. The full report is available for public feedback until the end of April at www.gotransit. com/electrification streetcar testing continues wNew

The new TTC streetcars are about to get a lot more visible. The new vehicles, which are larger and quieter than the current aging fleet, have had several sightings in the past year while they continue to undergo testing ahead of an Aug. 31 official launch. While testing continues, the vehicle will be on public display at two events in April and May. The new vehicle will

be part of the annual parade of streetcars taking place April 20 at the Beaches Easter Parade. The new streetcar will also be available to tour, but not ride, at the TTC’s Russell Carhouse for Doors Open Toronto on the weekend of May 24. call for better transit wStudents

Students from the University of Toronto are calling for better transit in an effort reduce excessive commute times in the Greater Toronto Area. Information released by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance indicates 68 per cent of first-year U of T students rely on transit to get to campus. A quarter of those students average 16 hours per week on their commutes, well above the regional average of nearly seven hours, which itself is one of the highest totals in North America. Last week, at a debate at the university co-hosted by CivicAction, students shared tales of their long commutes and called on all major provincial parties to make improving transit a central objective of reducing traffic congestion. Union-Pearson Express project commencing sewer construction Residents living along the GO Georgetown South rail corridor could be impacted by scheduled construction for the ongoing Georgetown South (GTS) Project. The provincial transit planning agency Metrolinx is coordinating work for the GTS Project, a series of infrastructure improvements along the rail corridor to accommodate the upcoming Union-Pearson (UP) Express air-rail link service. Metrolinx announced

CORRECTION A story on page 17 of The Bloor West Villager Thursday, April 3, ‘Junction historical society to remain at Annette branch,’ said the Toronto Public Library has granted the West Toronto Junction

recently that installation of a new sewer drainage system, intended to improve stormwater management along the corridor, has commenced between Bloor GO Station and Lansdowne Avenue. The sewer installation work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Starting in April residents and businesses may also experience increased vibration caused by heavy

construction vehicles performing the sewer installation. Metrolinx has pledged to monitor vibration levels while the work takes place. It’s not currently known how long the work will last but the entire GTS project construction is not expected to be completed until the end of the 2014. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Gord Perks hasposted a construction bulletin for the sewer work on his website www.gordperks.ca

Historical Society a rebate off its rent. However, the figure the society is paying is part of a license agreement covering overhead costs in the library associated with the space. The licensing agreement is based on the society agreeing to share its space with the district librarian one day a

week. Because the society has a license agreement, not a lease, it is officially in partnership with the library, hence sharing the space. The society is paying $800 per year. This is half the non-profit rate, which is typically $1,900. The Villager regrets the error.
