Street fair on Bloor West this weekend bigger, better JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Bloor Street West is set to host its second arts and crafts fair, with this year’s edition bigger and better than last year’s, said the Bloorcourt Business Improvement Area (BIA) chair. The Bloorcourt Arts and Crafts Street Fair will see Bloor Street closed from Dufferin Street to Montrose Avenue, with plenty of attractions on tap for everyone. “Our arts and crafts component has roughly doubled in size (since last year) and we’ve added a little green zone with vendors offering green products and information,” said Bloorcourt BIA chair Antonia >>>INAUGURAL, page 17

Food market a hot spot for neighbours

Phone service at The Villager Baked goods, affordable produce from local farmers sold at market unavailable Friday evening LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Phone numbers for staff of the Bloor West Villager will be unavailable between the hours of 5-9 p.m. on Friday, due to telephone system maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The newspaper’s main telephone number, 416-493-4400 will remain in service during the disruption.

Within moments of its opening, the Good Food Market hosted by The Stop Community Food Centre, was already bustling. Dozens of nearby residents lined up to purchase seasonal, local and affordable produce. Market volunteers fired up the barbecue and roasted corn and heated up the outdoor pizza ovens as trays of fresh dough were stacked nearby. Mary Milne was just one of several

people enjoying the atmosphere and the hot, not humid weather behind the Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre next door to The Stop where the market takes place over the summer. “When you buy produce here, it lasts longer than what you buy at the grocery store,” said Milne, an area resident since 1984. “The prices are fair.” She’s a regular at the Good Food Market – not only for the food, but for meeting up with her neighbours and friends. @BWVillager

As Maria Marchese husked corn she had just purchased, she was more than happy to chat about the market’s appeal. “Everything’s fresh, it’s all very good,” she told The Villager last Tuesday. Over a three-hour period, the Good Food Market draws as many as 90 people on a weekly basis. Rekha Cherian, The Stop’s food bank co-ordinator and organizer of the market, said she’d love to attract more people. “What’s great about these num-

bers is we’re sustaining them,” she said. Every Tuesday after 11 a.m., volunteer bakers arrive to begin whipping up treats such as apple crumb cake, peach-rhubarb pie and whole wheat chocolate chip cookies. “We’ve always attracted ridiculously talented bakers and pastry chefs,” said Cherian. “People are getting local, seasonal baking.” Volunteers like Khadija Coxon, a Christie Street and Davenport Road-area resident, can take credit >>>GOOD FOOD, page 12

The Revue screens Canadian classic Film critic releases book documenting the impact of Goin’ Down the Road LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

F

ilmmaker Don Shebib’s 1970 release Goin’ Down the Road is a Canadian classic that offers a snapshot of Toronto’s history at the tail end of the hippie revolution. Yet during filming, its director never could have imagined the impact it would have. “I think the film worked pretty good. It had its share of flaws, but the acting was terrific,” Shebib told The Villager over the phone from his Parkside Drive home. “I had been making documentary films for about seven or eight years – I wanted to try my hand at a feature film. I didn’t expect it to have such a big effect or audience that it has had.” Goin’ Down the Road is the story of two unemployed friends, Peter and Joey, from the Maritimes who embark on a road trip from their hometown of Cape Breton to Toronto where they’re hoping relatives can hook them up with jobs. When things don’t go according to plan, the guys find themselves left to their own devices working minimum wage jobs ($2 at the time) at a bottle factory and a car wash. Complicating matters, Joey

The Aug. 21 installment of 'The Book Revue' at The Revue Cinema, features the launch of Toronto movie critic Geoff Pevere's book Don Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road and the screening of the 1970 classic Goin' Down the Road.

gets his girlfriend pregnant and the guys must move in together. The low-budget film was made for about $87,000 – less than what most current productions pay for craft services, says Toronto movie critic Geoff Pevere. Pevere’s new book, Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down

the Road, explores how such a lowbudget film, which “looks rough” according to its director, could resonate with so many people to become the Canadian icon that it is. Pevere writes, “In some respects, it’s our belated Birth of a Nation, our westward-ho(ser) Stagecoach and our blue-collar Easy Rider all packed into one beat up, hundred-buck convertible Impala.” Both Pevere and Shebib will be at the Revue Cinema on Tuesday, Aug. 21 for a special installment of the series ‘The Book Revue,’ which Pevere hosts. The event begins with a book launch reception at 5:30 p.m. at the theatre followed by a screening of the movie along with its 2011 sequel. Tuesday’s Book Revue is copresented by the University of Toronto Press and the Toronto International Film Festival, which jointly published the book as part of the Canadian Cinema series. The event is also made possible by Union Pictures, which has just released a digital restoration of the 1970s movie, which will be shown for the first time at the Revue that night. Pevere says he has a vague recollection of first seeing the movie

on TV as a teenager and remembers being aware that this was a film people were talking about. “I didn’t know what all the fuss was about. It looked like a rough documentary,” he recalled. After taking a course on Canadian film in university, Pevere came to realize that Goin’ Down the Road was “a very strong, powerful, honest and emotional film about two down-and-out Maritimers trying to find success in Toronto and not succeeding.” “This movie constantly came up again and again. I came to fully appreciate it. It captured something really unique about living in Canada, in a city in Canada – more specifically about living in Toronto at that time,” said Pevere. The Toronto depicted in the film no longer exists, he said. The neighbourhoods that were once working class now are gentrified. “The film is a record of a time in this city’s history,” said Pevere. Pevere and Shebib will discuss the film at the Book Revue. The cost of the launch event is $20 for Revue members and seniors; $26 for non-members. For the films and reception only: $10 for members/seniors for one film; $13 for non-members. Add $4 for the second film.

Junction filmmaker earns praise on festival circuit LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Writer-director Jason Lapeyre’s ultimate goal is to make films he’d love to watch himself. With his latest project – his first feature – the crime film Cold Blooded, he said he has succeeded. “Crime movies are my first love,” Lapeyre, a Junction resident told The Villager in an interview last week.. Lapeyre’s script focuses on injured jewel thief Cordero (played by Ryan Robbins of Battlestar Galactica fame), who is arrested for the murder of his partner and is being held in a secluded and virtually abandoned wing of the fictional Scarborough Hospital while receiving treatment. Assigned to guard the patient is officer Frances Jane (actress Zoie Palmer, who currently stars in Showcase’s Lost Girl), whom Cordero tries to convince he isn’t capable of murder. Jane believes she’s in for a quiet, uneventful night shift, however, her fate drastically changes when Cordero’s boss tricks his way into the hospital with his

henchmen on a quest to retrieve the stolen diamonds at all costs. Lapeyre’s Cold Blooded is not unlike some of his favourites of the genre, cult-classics like Reservoir Dogs. His film even includes an extremely graphic and bloody scene that could be interpreted as an homage to actor-director Quentin

Tarantino. The film came out of an audition of sorts with producer Tim Merkel, whose credits include Flashpoint, X-Men and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He had access to an abandoned hospital and gathered a group of writers there on a walkabout where they could draw inspiration from to write a script.

Lapeyre came back to him with two ideas, one for a crime script and another about zombies. “I said, ‘What do you want to do?’ And, he said: Do the one you’d like to do,” recalled Lapeyre. The movie was shot in the basement of Humber River Regional Hospital, which is frequently used for different film and television projects. Cold Blooded is currently garnering rave reviews on the festival circuit. It was recently screened at the Mississauga International Film Festival and at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal, which hailed it one of the year’s best thrillers, and has been selected for an upcoming festival in Austin, Texas. Lapeyre studied film at Queen’s University and earned a Masters in Film at York University. “I think like most filmmakers, I fell head over heels with movies in high school,” he said. “I loved movies so much that I wanted to give something back.” As well as Cold Blooded Lapeyre’s resume boasts the film I Declare War, and the documentary Faceless. Canadarm belongs at Downsview

The Bloor West Villager is published every Thursday at 307 Humberline Dr., Toronto, ON M9W 5V1, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Better recycling starts at home

To the editor: Re: ‘Canadarm should come to Toronto, Ottawa,’ Letters, Aug. 9 I, too, believe the Canadarm should go to one of Canada’s great air and space museums. My preference is the Canadian Air and Space Museum at Downsview Park. Had the management of Downsview Park demonstrated wisdom and intelligence, Canadarm may well have been assigned to the Canadian Air and Space Museum at the park. However, that possibility ended when the Downsview management shortsightedly and mistakenly decided to close down this year-round cultural asset in the park – the Canadian Air and Space Museum. Bill Tee

H

ow well do you recycle? Do you ensure everything that should go into your green bin makes it in there? The merits of public and private garbage collection systems in Toronto will continue to be debated. It’s a debate that was renewed last week when the residential portion of the city from Yonge Street to the Humber River officially switched to a private system of collection. This now means about half of the city – west of Yonge – has privatized collection (Etobicoke has had its residential waste collected privately since before amalgamation). The remainder of the city continues to have its residential waste collected by city employ- our view ees. But let’s think beyond the Sorting helps method of collection. Let’s think about what we, as residents, are improve doing. waste Residents must use this time as an opportunity to embrace better habits of their own when diversion they put out their waste for collection. We must ask ourselves: Are we doing all we can? Doing all we can means ensuring residential waste is properly diverted into garbage, recycling and green bins. This may mean taking a bit of sorting time beforehand. Refer to your waste collection calendar or use the Waste Wizard online tool to get more information if you’re unsure about what goes where. Accessing information is straightforward; it’s not hard. According to figures from the City of Toronto, our recycling has a 20 per cent contamination rate (referring to items that can’t be recycled). Reducing that number is a meaningful and achievable goal. Ultimately, waste that’s properly sorted before collection means more efficient collection. That’s ultimately better for the taxpayer. That’s the benefit. As for the public versus private collection debate, let it continue. Will cost-saving success experienced by this program merit expansion? Will the dire warnings of worsening service be correct? Maybe further adjustments to Toronto’s garbage collection system won’t even be deemed necessary. Regardless of that outcome, there are manageable tasks we as residents can do now. The first week wasn’t perfect for the new service provider, as reports of delays surfaced. As much as one would like the smoothest of transitions in a service as important as waste collection, sometimes that’s not always possible – particularly in a large city. A core component of elected representation is ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services. Constituents can do their part by ensuring as little of Toronto’s waste as possible goes to landfill. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Construction sites no place for police To the editor: I would like to humbly suggest a simple solution to improve the staffing levels in Toronto’s police department. I have to wonder why I see fully equipped, good-togo police officers standing around the many dozens of construction sites across the city watching a work crew digging a hole. Why did this suddenly have to become standard practice for every construction site a few years ago? Could a bored 18-year-old holding a stop/ slow sign be just as effective in most instances? What is the ultimate cost to the taxpayers of Toronto? If these men and women have all of this extra time off so that they can work these hours plus their regular shift, perhaps the regular shift could be increased to allow them to focus on essential police work. We are paying these valuable people top wages and benefits and I want to know if we are getting the best value from our employees? Chris Belfontaine

Volunteer Maggie MacKenzie sells the very popular baked good at the The Stop’s Good Food Market, happening behind the Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The market includes a pizza oven, baked goods, and an extensive collection of produce from local farmers for sale at affordable prices.

Good Food Market runs every Tuesday evening this summer >>>from page 1 for the apple crumb cake. She’s a self-taught baker and has always wanted to volunteer for The Stop. She’s a regular at The Stop’s Wychwood Barns “Green Barn” Farmers’ Market. The Good Food Market is made possible through a partnership with FoodShare, the non-profit agency working to improve access to affordable and healthy food from field to table. Most of the food sold at the market is purchased from FoodShare, which sources items from the Ontario Food Terminal and delivers it to The Stop’s market team. Produce is then sold to customers at a small mark-up, enough to cover the

market’s operating costs. “We try to buy as local and affordable and culturally appropriate food as possible, said Cherian. “We look at our population who uses the market and buy accordingly.” For example, last Tuesday, the market offered such items as Asian egg plant, okra, figs and plantains. The market, one of 17 good food markets across the city, is open to everyone and often features special programming like English as a Second Language classes, musical entertainment and cooking demonstrations. It was established approximately six years ago, said Cherian, to address the

area’s lack of grocery stores. Transportation is also a barrier to people in this community, she said. “The market’s mandate is to provide more fresh, affordable, nutritious produce that’s accessible to the community,” said Cherian. Added communications co-ordinator Chr istina Palassio, “We want to bring people together from different walks of life who might not otherwise meet each other.” The Good Food Market is located at 1884 Davenport Rd. and runs on Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Visit www. thestop.org/good-foodmarket-and-bake-oven for further details.

Municipal Class Environmental Assessment - Notice of Study Completion The City ofToronto has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study to advance the recommendations of the City’s Wet Weather Flow Master Plan (approved by City Council in 2003) to capture and treat polluted stormwater and combined sewer overflows (CSO’s) that are discharged to the Don River and Central Waterfront. This will help to improve water quality and our environment. In addition, necessary upgrades have been identified to the City’s critical sanitary trunk sewer infrastructure within the study area to improve operations and service future growth. The study has defined the problems/opportunities, identified and evaluated alternatives, and determined a preferred solution and design in consultation with the City ofToronto, regulatory agencies, and the public. The City has accepted the consultant’s recommendations regarding the preferred solution and design, including the following project components: Sanitary Trunk Sewer System l A Lower Don/Coxwell BypassTunnel that will be used on a contingency basis as a bypass to the existing Coxwell SanitaryTrunk Sewer (STS) allowing for periodic maintenance and any necessary repairs of the Coxwell STS, l Four underground storage tanks for offline storage of peak sanitary flows where additional capacity is needed. l Upgrades to the NorthTorontoTreatment Plant (NTTP). Wet Weather Flow Collection and Storage System l Three integrated tunnels (Lower Don/Coxwell BypassTunnel,Taylor Massey CreekTunnel, and Inner HarbourTunnel) connected to an equivalent of 15 underground vertical storage shafts that will collect and store wet weather flows and convey these flows to a new wet weather flow treatment facility. l Three underground storage tanks for offline storage of wet weather flows from four remote outfall locations. Treatment of Collected Wet Weather Flow l A new wet weather treatment facility that will provide high-rate treatment of wet weather flows and will be located on future lakefill in the waterlot south of the existing Ashbridges BayTreatment Plant. l A new pumping station in Ashbridges Grove Park with forcemains connecting to the new wet weather flow treatment facility. l Retrofit of an existing CSO tank at the NorthTorontoTreatment Plant. Opportunities for Review The study was carried out following the requirements for Schedule ‘C’ projects under the Municipal Class EA. An Environmental Study Report (ESR) has been completed and placed on public record for a 45-day review period starting August 10, 2012 and ending September 24, 2012.The ESR will be available for review on the project website at www.toronto.ca/cleanwaterways and at the following locations: Beaches Library 2161 Queen St. E. 416 393 7703

Seniors and depression

Getting older is an inevitable part of life. However, what doesn’t have to age or falter, is our attitudes on happy and healthy living. A positive outlook is just as important as a healthy body and in fact the two go hand in hand. For seniors life can change very quickly. Friends and partners may be dying, the body can’t get around like it once used to, or maybe you’ve moved into retirement living and you have to adjust to new surroundings, people and a new lifestyle. But these are all circumstances that can be dealt with and despite these situations have to be faced with a proactive and positive outlook or it can lead to isolation, loss of interest in friends, family and social activities and ultimately, depression. Depression is the number one mental health problem affecting seniors and while it may not be recognized as

the problem at first, there are many symptoms that could indicate that you or a loved one are suffering from depression. Are you tired all the time, do you suffer from insomnia? Do you have little interest in people and social activities? Are you eating too little or too much? If you answered yes to any of these, you could be suffering from depression. Suffering from depression can be crippling and in seniors can lead to deteriorating health and ultimately, premature death. Seeking help and support is key to recognizing and recovering so you can regain a quality of life that makes you happy and fulfilled. It’s also important to note that some medications can alter brain chemistry and contribute to your depression. If you feel this could be the case, talk to your doctor about altering your doses or the medications themselves.

Also, ask about nutrition and dietary needs as improper nutrition can also affect the way you think and feel. Your retirement years should be a rewarding time of your life filled with friends and loved ones and the freedom to enjoy and celebrate all you’ve accomplished in your life. Don’t let depression steal that away from you.

Artist and programmer Marc Reeve-Newson helps install a pair of interactive illuminated sculptures on the Humber Bridge last Thursday. A team of volunteer artists has been working at the old Joy Gas Station building for months to create the creatures, which light up in response to changes in the environment.

Humber Bridge sculptures take on giant proportions LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Size does matter as far as a group of artists who have created two giant illuminated, sculptured creatures that will hang from the Humber Bridge is concerned. “Go big or go home,” said one of the artists, Stacey Feldman, on Monday – three days before the sculptures were to be unveiled on the pedestrian bridge. “We love to do large-scale art; engaging pieces that people can

enjoy.” The Toronto-based group that includes as many as 25 people for the Humber installation is inspired by such artists as California’s The Flaming Lotus Girls, a volunteer group that creates monumental works of interactive, mechanical fire art. In fact, the Humber bridge project is one of the few that doesn’t include fire. Instead, the 20-feet, 600-pound creatures will be lit up by 1,200 LED lights, which will be individually programmed. During the day, the creatures will have a glass-like appearance. At night the creatures will seem to communicate with each other and their surroundings using

bio-luminescence, said Feldman. Early discussions for the fiberglass creature art installation began about a year ago. Artists started physically building them in April and May of this year. The challenge, said Feldman, was to work together to commit to completing the project. “We have a bigger purpose in mind and that is to get the community involved, to put a smile on people’s faces. It warms our hearts to share (the project),” said the theatre school and visual arts graduate. The group is comprised entirely of volunteers who work full-time at other careers. As of Friday, Aug. 10, it will transform the Humber Bridge into a monumental light sculpture, which will remain lit up nightly until Sept. 28. A special gala event will take place tonight on the bridge for financial donors, the media and the public to mark the unveiling. The evening’s white party includes aerialists and fire performers beginning at 8:30 p.m. The two creatures as well as the art installation project has yet to be named. The group is soliciting ideas from the public. Inaugural fair last year helped reignite interest in community >>>from page 1 Yee. “We’ll also have an increased kids’ zone that’s being largely put on by the Children’s Storefront.” Kids’ attractions will include bouncy castles and other inflatables, games, arts tables for youngsters, live entertainment and more. Two outdoor stages will serve as venues for entertainers of all stripes, while one of last year’s most popular draws – a live amateur wrestling match – will return for the second year. Visitors will be able to enjoy

extended patio spaces, a marketplace, sidewalk sale and more. Yee said the inaugural Bloorcourt Arts and Crafts Street Fair was a huge success, leading to an expanded second year. “Last year, we closed from Montrose to Dovercourt so this year we’re going to be that much bigger,” she said. “We had vendors who sold out of stuff last year and this year and I think now that people know what to expect, we’ll see even more people out.” The street fair came about as a way to reignite interest

in the Bloorcourt area. What was once a run-down stretch of one of Toronto’s largest streets has been slowly turning around. “This neighbourhood’s been changing the last few years,” she said. “We want to bring people to the community and to the street to see the new stores and businesses we have here.” The Bloorcourt Arts and Crafts Street Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. this Saturday.
