Vandals target village retailer Homophobic graffiti is ‘sickening’ says clothing store co-owner LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Trove, a clothing boutique in Bloor West Village, has fallen victim repeatedly to anti-gay graffiti vandalism – the latest incident taking place just this past weekend.

“It’s sickening,” co-owner Carolyn Eby told The Villager. “It’s extremely upsetting. How can someone think like this – it’s ridiculous.” Someone scrawled anti-gay slurs across the retail shop’s back wall, which faces the Green P lot north of Bloor Street West

at Beresford Avenue. Its storefront was defaced as well. Spray painted across Trove’s back wall were the words ‘Be Happy Not Gay.’ In the front window, the store’s pride flag was painted over. As far as Eby is concerned, anti-gay slurs should be a thing

of the past. “The pride symbol is welcoming to my staff, my friends, my family and clients to my store,” she said. “That symbol means something to me. Someone’s trying to silence me. It’s extremely upsetting.” >>>POLICE, page 19

A Christmas Carol to tour city’s west end Presented by Humber River Shakespeare Company The Humber River Shakespeare Company presents its 6th Annual tour of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this December, with stops at three unique venues in Toronto. This year’s annual production of the classic holiday tale will make stops in Etobicoke at Montgomery’s Inn, in Bloor West Village at St. Paul’s Church Runnymede, and in North York at Black Creek Pioneer Village. Mayor Tory must look beyond inner circle to grasp city’s vast issues

Write us

I

t’s premature to start criticizing Mayor John Tory’s appointments – he’s only been on the job for four days, and having four deputy mayors is surely better than one. Right? At first blush, the selection of his second-in-command, North York’s Denzil Minnan-Wong, and the other three deputy mayors – Scarborough’s Glenn De Baeremaeker (east), Etobicoke’s Vincent Crisanti (west) and downtown councillor Pam McConnell (south) – seems balanced, however, a large swath of the city appears to be left without the ear of Toronto’s freshly minted mayor. It looks like the status quo is how Mayor Tory is approaching the start of the 2014 to 2018 Toronto City Council. Looking for experience was the key to the appointments, he said. This is not a bad thing; it’s our view shrewd taking into consideration most councillors are the same Experience ones who held those seats before guides mayor’s the election. The mayor is different, but appointments most of council has remained the same – how will Mayor Tory handle this when last term was often difficult? Despite words to the contrary, the left on council seem to be out of the mayor’s inner circle. Granted, De Baeremaeker is by no means on the right and McConnell is a dyed-in-the-wool NDPer, but they have been tasked with bringing issues from large parts of the city to the mayor. How can De Baeremaeker and McConnell bring the many issues of Scarborough and the downtown, respectively, to the fore? Scarborough is a huge area and the downtown core is a complicated part of the city. Tory’s executive committee seems a bit better, with more progressive-voting voices. We ask that Mayor Tory regulary revisit his choices as council progresses – see who is doing a great job, not just a passable job. Perhaps there is room for more names in his inner circle? His door should always be open to councillors who are not directly meeting with him on a regular basis. They deserve an ear (or two) – and through them their constituents – in order to be able to provide our freshly minted mayor a true understanding of the diverse city he is now responsible for ‘uniting’.

Is this the return of the long-extinct Red Tory?

W

e are at a peculiar moment in history, and we should all take a moment to savour it. For the first time this century, and in this province, the Red Tories are in power. It’s been a long time — properly, the until-now extinct breed of Progressive Conservative government last saw power in 1985, when former Premier Bill Davis left Queen’s Park and eventually Mike Harris’ hard-right Tories changed the conversation on the right, seemingly for good. Well, that’s all changed. On Tuesday afternoon at city hall, John Tory made it clear that the Red Tories are back, and will be running things in Toronto for the next four years. Just to make it clear, he brought along his old friend and onetime boss Bill Davis – still demonstrably capable of delivering the kind of blistering charm offensive that kept Ontario in the hands of the Tories for four decades

david nickle the city last century. Davis and his predecessors maintained power by carefully balancing the needs of a post-war Ontario with its limitations, running as perfectly as they might up the middle of the political road: socially progressive and fiscally conservative. Also, as Davis put it afterwards to reporters, it doesn’t hurt to be a bit “bland.” Tory went to some lengths to make it clear that he’s taking more than a page from Davis’ playbook. In a lengthy inaugural address, Tory made brief mention of the need to find efficiencies in the budget and spent a lot of time speaking passionately about the need to mitigate the poisonous effects of income inequality, racial divisions and other ills that

In a lengthy inaugural address, Tory...spent a lot of time speaking passionately about the need to mitigate the poisonous effects of income inequality, racial divisions and other ills that have divided the city.

have divided the city. “None of us can be satisfied with the snapshot that has emerged in recent years, of a city unfairly and unjustly divided by income, class and geography. None of us can rest easy knowing that 150,000 Toronto kids are growing up in poverty — or that 15 neighbourhoods have poverty rates of 40 per cent or more,” Tory said. Listening to Tory speak, after hearing from antiviolence advocate Louise Russo talk from her wheel-

chair, about the importance of bringing council together, it was impossible not to contrast the event with former mayor Ford’s inaugural, where he snickered while Don Cherry told “pinkos” on council how they’d better watch out because there was a new guy in town. The new guy this time went out of his way to avoid such provocations, even as he laid out some challenges, to work together to deal with Toronto’s problems in a clear-headed and nonideological way. It remains to be seen whether this old-fashioned approach to politics will yield anything other than more of the same. But it’s an optimistic note on which to begin things. After all we’ve been through, a little Red Tory blandness is more than a little tempting. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. MPP Cheri DiNovo Support annual Holly Toy Drive fundraiser shares story of sexual assault with Project 97 Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club to benefit Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo is lending her support to ‘Project 97’, a conversation about sexual assault, abuse and harassment. Its name is derived from a statistic – that as many as 97 per cent of sexual assaults against women in Canada do not get recorded as crimes by police. Because of this statistic, Rogers Media is embarking on the year-long project to examine our country’s issues surrounding sexual violence. In most cases, police don’t investigate because assault victims don’t come forward. The 97 per cent figure also indicates that even though some do report their assault, they change their minds and later withdraw their complaints. This is in part because some women find the

Workers’ coalition, Metrolinx meet over Union-Pearson Express A coalition of airport workers and transit advocates will meet today with a highranking Metrolinx official to discuss concerns for the Union Pearson Express (UPX) air rail link. UPX President Kathy Haley has agreed to sit down with representatives from the coalition, which includes the Toronto Airport Council of Unions, the Clean Train Coalition and TTCriders, a spokesperson for the group confirmed late last week. In addition to demanding fares comparable with the TTC for the service, the coalition wants to see UPX electrified and expanded beyond its initial four-stop route. It’s scheduled to launch next spring. #grumpyrider campaign wAnnouncing

TTCriders has launched its latest social media campaign, calling on fed-up transit commission users to post grumpy

Presto is now available on the new TTC streetcars. The preloaded fare card allows riders to pay by “tapping on” at specially designed access portals. It launched on two of the TTC’s sleek new streetcars last Sunday, the only vehicles operated by transit commission to offer the service. A third TTC streetcar, which just recently began running on the 510 Spadina tracks, will also offer Presto in the near future, although it will still be several more years before Presto is fully available on all TTC vehicles.

Hear some ‘tall tales’ from the Junction’s long history Historical society, brewery host fundraiser Dec. 6 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The West Toronto Junction Historical Society (WTJHS) is teaming up with the Junction Craft Brewery to present an evening of ‘Tall Tales of the Junction.’ The event boasts the telling of some favourite Junction stories – some real and some “better than real.” “There are such great stories in the Junction – and such great storytellers,” WTJHS President Neil Ross told The Villager. “They are somewhat outrageous, but historical stories we tell.” A one-time city of its own, the Junction has always been larger than life, “a freight train of colourful characters,” one that got so wild, it had to shut down its own bars. Tall Tales, which takes place Thursday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m., will feature the story: ‘Last Call (Before the Junction Goes Dry)’. It’ll take place at Junction Craft Brewery, 90 Cawthra Ave., Unit 1. “We’ve been friends of theirs for a long time,” said Ross of the brewery. The WTJHS was instrumental in helping the brewery with characters and names that would lend themselves to its labels and brews, he said. “They’ve been very supportive as sponsors,” added Ross. The fundraising event is not unlike those the

The Junction town council assembles circa 1897. The West Toronto Junction Historical Society hosts its annual fundraising event 'Tall Tales of the Junction' Thursday, Dec. 11.

WTJHS has hosted in the past. Junction “legends,” such as journalist A.B. Rice, first librarian Elizabeth MacCallum, chief coroner Dr. G.W. Clendenan, chief of police and first Mountie Josiah Royce and Rev T.E.E. Shore have made appearances at such events as ‘The Wild Wild Junction Ghost stories pub crawl. Tall Tales of the Junction will be “like a pub crawl without the crawl,” said Ross, “because it’s winter.” The Junction legends will again share their favourite stories while audience members will also be invited to share their own stories of the neighbourhood for a chance to win historical prizes. The $20 admission fee will help the WTJHS continue to

do its work, like advocating for the conservation of the neighbourhood’s built heritage. The event will include a presentation based on the most recent installment of the WTJHS’ graphic novel. Admission includes snacks and a pint of ale from a Junction Craft Brewery special cask. Tickets are available at Annette Street Library, 145 Annette St. As well, the WTJHS hosts its annual Christmas/Winter Solstice party at Shox Tavern, 2827 Dundas St. W. Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. There will be snacks, pints, the return of the Junction quiz and prizes.

Perth Avenue P.S.’s field of dreams is complete and will be unveiled during a ceremony, Thursday, Dec. 4. Following three years of planning and work, including financial contributions from community partners, the elementary school is hosting a celebratory event. The schoolyard project boasts a new running track and additional green space as well as improved play areas for the students at both Perth Avenue and St. Luigi Catholic

School. The ceremony takes place at Perth P.S., 14 Ruskin Ave., at 2 p.m. The playground redevelopment project was one of four charities to receive a $50,000 grant from MLSE’s online competition. Perth Public School is bordered by train tracks, which makes it difficult for students to access other community recreation centres. Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão’s second annual community barbecue raised

$55,000 toward transforming the school’s yard from its former patch of bare asphalt into a four-lane rubber running track and soccer pitch. Community partners included Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment’s (MLSE) Te a m Up Fo u n d a t i o n , Castlepoint Numa, Sobey’s/ Earth Day Canada Community Environment Fund, Toronto Dominion Friends of the Environment Foundation, Tree Canada, Toyota Evergreen and the City of Toronto.

Winter plants brighten spaces Spring and summer have the colourful blooms and rich greenery that make the great outdoors so lush and inviting. Autumn is awash in vibrant colours that beckon people outdoors to explore. But winter has a poor reputation with regard to natural beauty. While it’s true that many plants and wildlife retreat into hibernation come the colder temperatures, some choose the wintertime to bloom. Other plants and shrubs continue to hold on to their leaves and colour despite the cold. Hardy winter plants do more than just survive the snow and ice. Many thrive and have the potential to add that unexpected touch of colour to an otherwise dreary landscape. • Mahonia: Some varieties of mahonias bloom in the winter and can be hardy up to −7 °C. The close relative Oregon grape holly will flower in very early spring. • Camellia: Camellias grow flowers similar in shape and size to roses. They range in shade from light pink to bright red. Camellias can bloom all year long in moderate temperature zones. Even in colder zones, some cold climate hybrids can continue to add welcome colour to the garden. • Daphne: The fragrant flowers of many daphnes appear in mid-winter. The variety Jacqueline Postill is evergreen. • Evergreen holly: Perhaps the evergreen holly is the quintessential winter plant. Green shiny leaves and bold red berries can be a bright spot in a winter garden. A holly hedge also can serve as a wind and privacy barrier. • Hellebore: Also called the “Christmas Rose,” hellebores can be delightful in areas of the country

where winter flowers tend to be rare. The plant bears pure white flowers that often age to pink. • Snowdrop: These delicate white blooms often pop out of a layer of snow even before the first crocuses of spring. Snowdrops can wait out harsh weather and even extended snow events before eventually sprouting. • Crape myrtle: There are around 50 species of these trees and shrubs that are native to parts of Asia and India. The trees bloom beautifully and continue to hold on to their bright coloured flowers in warmer climates. • Jelena witch hazel: These curly, odd-shaped blooms have a rich, copper colour and can bloom as early as January. This plant also is an orange-red colour in autumn. • Kaffir lily: Also known as the “Red River lily,” these perennials appear in the fall but can still bloom on mild days in the winter. These plants prefer wet conditions.

Police checking surveillance video >>>from page 1 The pride flag represents the Bloor West Village community as well, she added. Eleven Division police are investigating. The case is ongoing, according to Det. Const. Jordan Stowell. “We’re actively investigating. Officers canvassed the area,” he said of the night the vandalism took place. They’re working alongside Trove’s owners to go through its surveillance video as well as those from other businesses along the retail strip, Stowell said. “This is ridiculous. It’s frustrating,” he said of the vandalism. This is the first time anything of this nature has happened to any of Trove’s three locations. “The first incident we can remember is in late summer, early fall,” Eby said. “Someone

had cut out cardboard the exact size and shape of our pride symbol and used rubber cement to cover it. They meticulously took the time to do this.” Initially, Eby did not call

police, but this time she got in touch 11 Division. “Police have been very supportive,” she said.

Music students fundraising to attend ‘Trills and Thrills’ band festival in Ohio >>>from page 1 ondary school does not have any overt signage. And, yet, the all-girls’ school, which is set to mark its centennial anniversary next year, is one of the neighbourhood’s best kept secrets. “Our little school has a lot of cool things going on,” music director Glenn Donovan told The Villager in an interview Tuesday. “Cool things,” such as the annual Christmas concertmusic program that’s set to take place at the school Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. The event boasts performances by three different bands: the junior concert band, senior ‘varsity’ concert band and senior jazz ensemble. Cecilia Nguyen, a Grade 12 student at Loretto College, has been a part of the school’s music program since she was in Grade 9.

... nothing is more satisfying than going out to perform in front of a live audience with a group of girls and a teacher whom I consider family,. – Cecilia Nguyen

“To me, nothing is more satisfying than going out to perform in front of a live audience with a group of girls and a teacher whom I consider family,” Nguyen said. “It takes dedication, commitment and hard work to produce an exceptional band, which is what the LCS Music Program expects. As a member of Loretto College’s Music Program, I have learned that despite the blood, sweat and tears that are shed, all of our hard

work and effort does pays off in the end.” This is a school whose music students have participated in as many as eight music festivals in recent years in both Toronto and the United States. Students will be fundraising for the majority of the school term so they can participate in the annual ‘Trills and Thrills’ band festival that takes place this spring in Cleveland, Ohio. “We received a top band rating of ‘superior’ when we did this same festival back in 2011,” Donovan said. In addition to the band concert, the music teacher has arranged for his students to perform a 30-minute show at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame the day prior. “Needless to say, the girls are very excited to have this opportunity,” Donovan said.

If festivals and community events weren’t enough already, the band aims to perform at all school functions while hosting at least two of its own concerts a year. In addition to the three school bands, the all-female alumni jazz band ensemble, called ‘The Brunswick Revue’ was established in 2010. It performed as part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival at the legendary “Rex” hotel in 2012. The jazz band ensemble’s name is a nod to the school’s original location on Brunswick Avenue where it remained for 75 years until its relocation to the St. ClairDufferin Street neighbourhood. Despite the school’s musical accomplishments and endeavors, Loretto College’s enrolment is declining, Donovan said. Perhaps this is because the

school is single-gendered, Donovan mused, who has been teaching at Loretto since 2009. This format doesn’t appeal to everyone, he said. Yet, Donovan would like to spread the word about all the school has to offer. “I want to let people in the community know that LCS has an awesome music program,” he said. Nguyen will graduate this year and she’ll have fond memories of her high school, particularly her musical experience there. “I know that the music program’s legacy will continue on, due to the hard work and determination of each and every music student enrolled in the program,” she said. Loretto College School is at 151 Rosemount Ave. Visit www.tcdsb.org/schools/ lorettocollege

FORD’S FUTURE HOME

A DEALER IN BUSINESS SINCE 1946 1946

1988

We are growing to serve you

2015

“Best”

Thorncrest Ford has been part of the Etobicoke community since 1947. It was established by two returning WWII R.C.A.F. veterans at the corner of Dundas and Islington. Since then, the community has grown and prospered. Thorncrest Ford has also transformed through the years, by changing locations, updating it’s look and providing new and improved Ford vehicles. In 1985, to meet the needs of the community,Thorncrest Ford amalgamated with Sherway Ford Truck Sales to create Thorncrest Sherway Inc. at its current convenient location on The Queensway. A major renovation and expansion to the Showroom and Service capacity was completed in 1988. One thing that has not changed is Thorncrest Ford’s commitment to providing Etobicoke and the GTA the “Best” customer experience. Of our many awards, we are most proud of being the only GTA car dealership to earn 16 consecutive Consumer Choice Awards (and counting) where you, our customer, have voted us the “Best”. Starting November 1st, 2014, we will be renovating and upgrading our facility to serve you “Best”. In cooperation with the Ford Motor Company, we will be adding the latest technologies, innovations and services to become a dealership for the future. For example, to be a fully competitive facility, our service department is expanding to include a state-of-the-art, all-season, climate controlled drive-thru reception area and Quick Lane. Quick Lane will provide vehicle maintenance and light repair at affordable prices with no appointment necessary. This renovation is the next chapter in Thorncrest Ford’s long history in Etobicoke, showing our dedication to the community for the future. During our renovations, all departments will be fully operational to serve you “Best”. As always, we welcome you to purchase or service your vehicle at Thorncrest Ford now, and for the future.
