The caiman that was loose in a pond near High Park is safe and is being cared for by experts at a reptile zoo. A crew from Reptilia, a zoo and education centre in Vaughan, was able to catch the creature in Catfish Pond after about an hour in the water, Cheryl S. Sheridan, head zookeeper, told The Villager. “It was a young member of the alligator family called a spectacled caiman. Absolutely no threat to people or pets at his size, and would never have survived our winter to get big enough to a point where he might have been,” Sheridan said. “He is in our quarantine facility now, and will be cared for by us until (Toronto Animal Services) can help locate an appropriate facility to home >>>TAS, page 8

World Cup leaves legacy in Toronto

Write us

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope that this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championship on Sunday. Whether it’s been by meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, or having the opportunity to learn more about another country and its culture, Torontonians are witnessing a unique opportunity for comour view munity building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to Community gather together often help building a forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports by-product of events like these inspire stars sporting events of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup final or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO to see those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. One final note: Those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field (Montreal, Moncton and Edmonton are also hosting games). Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage (against Finland and Ghana) are here in Toronto.

Dirty deeds in mayoral campaign?

I

s it going to get dirty, this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday, as he told reporters he believed that a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when CityNews uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Mayor Ford’s sobriety coach, for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-year-old Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview that he had indeed been kicked, and added that he was surprised when a police officer said that it was Ford’s coach who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident.

david nickle the city Furr has also made clear that he is not a part of a mayoral campaign. The jury is still out on Doug Ford’s speculative allegation that someone associated with the election smashed his car window in the middle of the night. Doug Ford is correct in saying that things are getting if not dirty, then ugly. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat – at least so far as the polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Festival launch on Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirt-wearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. East York school teacher Joe Killoran, who offered Mayor Ford a blistering, bare-chested rebuke as he joined a Canada Day parade, has become a

poster boy for this fury. Tommy Lenathen, a longtime city employee from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children. It may, one supposes, emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, that the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger – at the racism, sexism, homophobia and lewdness that the mayor has expressed – that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 2010-2014 term of office, that line is so far behind us that we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it. Letter No consultation on Green P To the editor: Re: “Shortcut through Green P lot on Kennedy Avenue to be blocked off to drivers,’ News, June 26 I read your piece in The Villager regarding the changes to the Green P lot on Kennedy Avenue. Actually from the view of the Glendonwynne Road residents the title tells us everything. Didn’t Councillor Sarah Doucette notice that the Green P lot is also on Glendonwynne Road? The Glendonwynne residents were left completely in the dark on this one. None of the residents that I have talked to were consulted about this change. No notices. No letters. No meetings. Nothing. We feel let down. It is simply not fair to do a big change to the traffic on our street and not bother to include us in any of the decisionmaking process. Andrew Mahoney

Fat Girl Food Squad talks food, fat and feminism in film series

PROMO ENDS

JULY 24th

NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com Food, fat and feminism are the three “fs” Amanda (Ama) Scriver loves to talk about. And now a fourth, film, will combine Scriver’s favourite ideas with a frank discussion about body image, health and fun. Scriver, co-founder of Toronto blog Fat Girl Food Squad and a Junction resident, will join other members in a new summer film series at the Belljar Café in Roncesvalles Village. “We’re all about IRL (in real life) hangs with our readers,” Scriver said. “It’s a great opportunity to get together and see films that relate back to what we’re discussing online.” Starting this month, the squad will offer free screenings of films that relate to food and the ideas that surround it. FoodShare’s Julie Nowak will also be leading a discussion on food security after this month’s pick, A Place at the Table. Scriver started the first Fat Girl Food Squad with friend Yuli Scheidt last spring as a response to food and body positivity blogs out there. “It was difficult to find images of plus-size women eating food,” Scriver said. “We wanted to say it’s OK to eat and be OK in your own skin, and I think people are really loving that.” Scriver said the blog is filled with honest discussions on how food and size are being portrayed in the media. “We’re not a recipe blog,” she said. For example, there is an upcoming post in response to the controversial “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” campaign by model Kate Moss. Within the year, new chapters, or squads, formed across Canada in Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg and across the world in Denver, Los Angeles and Australia. All squads go by the motto

SUMMERTIME, and the Giving is Easy Courtesy photo

We’re unabashedly loud and proud about these things. Food is fun and we’re trying to break barriers on weight, mental health and body image. – Amanda Scriver

that “there’s a fat girl inside everyone”, which Scriver said is about “embracing and enjoying every size, race, gender and sexuality” within and just “loving life.” “We’re unabashedly loud and proud about these things,” Scriver said. “Food is fun and we’re trying to break barriers on weight, mental health and body image.” The film series comes after a successful string of meetups with readers, including last month’s plus-size pop-up shop, an art show and their popular “Bloggers who Brunch” series bringing other media together. “We wanted a creative outlet where we could meet over a great meal to get to know these people,” Scriver said of the event. One brunch attendee ended up

becoming a contributor to the blog. Scriver, who grew up in Toronto, said the city often provides great inspiration for the blog. “I used to live on top of Bacchus Roti in Parkdale,” Scriver said on discovering Toronto’s cuisine, while listing Thai and Indian cuisines as her favourites. “The thing about Parkdale is that it’s so diverse and you can get different types of cuisines, no matter where you go in the city,” she said. The team is in the midst of launching a new website with local artist collaborations, and is planning a guacamole fundraising event in support of the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre. Scriver, who recently finished a photoshoot in Trinity Bellwoods park with “lots of cake,” said it was always her intention to have images of the team “making ridiculous faces while eating” and keeping things light. “At the end of the day I’m happy and I’m enjoying every moment,” she said. The Fat Girl Food Squad Summer Film Series runs every month beginning July 17 to Sept. 11 at the back patio of The Belljar Café, 2072 Dundas St. West. Film and popcorn are free.

With the addition of Simcoe Street, the City of Toronto’s bike lane network grew a little larger this week. Painted bike lanes are now available on both sides of the street between Queen Street West and Front Street. They’ll also intersect with planned bike lanes on both Richmond Street and Adelaide Street, planned for later this summer. The lanes, which are not separated from the rest of the street, went into effect yesterday. TAS can help find homes for exotic animals >>>from page 1 him to.” Locating the caiman was easier than it could have been, she said. “We appeared like large predators to it, so it kept swimming away and disappearing under water for long lengths of time as we closed in on it,” Sheridan said. “Finally after about an hour we were able to sneak close enough to snatch it before it could swim away again.” Fiona Venedam, a supervisor at Toronto Animal Services (TAS), said the department received several emails and phone calls saying someone had spotted the creature. Staff called in experts at Reptilia to help catch the reptile, plus Toronto Police Services in case they needed a floatation device. TAS suspects the approximately 30-inch caiman is about three years old. It was likely let go in the pond because its owner couldn’t care for it properly. “If for some reason someone has a prohibited creature,

don’t realize how big they can get.” TAS is calling facilities across the province to find a permanent home for the reptile. It will likely be a zoo she said.

Already celebrated for hundreds of years in the South Asian community, Bloor West resident Daniel Masih would like to adapt

Raksha Bandhan Day for all cultures. He’s been campaigning since last year to see Brother-Sister Day become as popular as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Brampton m a yo r Su s a n Fennel has proclaimed Aug. 21 Brother-Sister Day (Raksha Bandhan Day) and the City of Pickering has declared Aug. 10 the day. Raksha Bandhan Day originated centuries ago when wives would tie a “raksha” (string) around their warrior husbands’ wrists for good luck and to keep them protected. As the years passed on, it’s moved on from husbands and wives to brothers and sisters. Next year, he plans to lobby the City of Toronto for a day of declaration. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job.

What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?

Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 13 times (including 2014).

McCormick Park will be home to a Little Free Library LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com McCormick Park is the new home of a ‘Little Free Library.’ The librar y, which is expected to be installed by this weekend, was the brainchild of resident and advocacy group Friends of McCormick Park member Lindsay Somers-Hagarty. “As an avid reader. I’ve always loved the idea of the Little Free Library program and wanted to bring one into our park. With support of the Friends of McCormick Park, our dream came true,” she said. It is Somers-Hargarty’s hope the library will bring new faces to the Dundas West and Dufferin streetsarea park, “people who might never have explored our wonderful little community

before.” In Oc t o b e r, Somers-Hagarty h e l d h e r t h i rd bake sale fundraiser on behalf of the Friends of McCormick Park at the Mary McCormick Recreation Centre. Calling it ‘The Bake Sale of Books,’ the event boasted tables full of book-themed treats that raised enough money for the Little Free Library. The Little Free Library got its start in 2009 in Hudson, WI., when one of its residents, Todd Bol, built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a one-time teacher who had a passion for reading. He filled the model with books and installed it on a post in his front yard with a sign: Free

Books. The Little Free Library serves as a ‘take-a-book, return-a-book’ gathering spot for neighbours to swap t h e i r f a vo u r i t e books. Anyone is encouraged to stop by to pick up a book or two while bringing one to share. “Books will be collected by the Friends of McCormick Park, added to the library and the entire project will be continuously monitored by members of the group,” she said. An exact location has yet to be determined, although it will likely be installed near the playground, next to the rocks.

A natural foods store is hoping to move to a former factory on Vine Avenue in the Junction, but residents in the area are concerned about the affect it’ll have on traffic. Digs Dorfman, owner of The Sweet Potato, currently situated on Dundas Street West at Pacific Avenue, said he’d like to move the store around the corner to 108 Vine Avenue and has applied for a bylaw amendment to do so. Renovations at 2995 Dundas St. W. weren’t enough to make room for the ever-growing number of customers and so he says he’d like to expand. A larger store would allow for significantly more goods, from fresh baked breads, a bulk department and a vitamins and supplements section, among many others. Dorfman, an Annette Street resident, said he loves the area and would love to stay in the neighbourhood. “We feel blessed to be an integral part of the community,” he said at a community meeting held Thursday evening at West Toronto Baptist Church. The consensus among the dozens of residents there, however, was that the proposed 1,670 square metre organic grocery store would add to the existing traffic congestion, flow issues and parking on an already narrow street. Yet, community members were divided when it came to their opinion on the proposed new location of the grocery store – some were dead set against the move while others were open to having such an amenity in their midst. “We never realized this w o u l d u p s e t p e o p l e ,” Dorfman told the capacity crowd. The new grocery store would have a floor space of 11,000 square feet and could have a parking lot of as many as 109 parking spaces – this has yet to be determined. “We’re here to listen to what you have to say. We

Natural food store 'The Sweet Potato' in the Junction is looking to relocate around the corner from its Dundas Street West location to 108 Vine Ave., above, which would require a change in zoning by the City of Toronto.

want to do everything we can to work with Vine Avenue residents,” said Dorfman. “We think our new store will only add to the community.” A grocery store can be permitted on the site with the zoning bylaw amendment and a “satisfactory” traffic study, according to Toronto City Planner Derek Waltho. Added the applicant’s planner Lucila Sandoval, “the zoning does not permit retail so we’re applying to add a retail component.” George Tougas, who lives on Pacific Avenue at Vine Avenue, just steps from the proposed grocery store, pointed out that there is no entry onto Vine Avenue from Keele Street between 4 and 6 p.m. and wanted to know how this would affect customers and residents. “ We’re ove r w h e l m e d already,” he said. Dorfman said that according to a survey completed by more than 550 customers, as much as 55 per cent walk, many ride their bikes. Members of the Vine-Pacific-McMurray Community Alliance, a local advocacy group, voiced their opposition to the grocery store, citing traffic, safety, noise and parking as well as its proximity to Vine Avenue Parkette where lots of children take advantage of the

playground. “I see kids run out onto the street from the park,” said one. “It’s a narrow street for the volume of traffic.” Dorfman assured residents that the store will restrict its deliveries to after 9 a.m. and before 6 p.m., saying that The Sweet Potato only gets three to six a day and that trucks are not much larger than a cube van. This will not change if the new store opens, he said. City representatives said that traffic calming measures are an option and ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette said a traffic study is underway, separate from the 108 Vine Ave. proposal. Amid the questions and concerns, one resident said he was confused by the opposition to the grocery store. “It baffles me – usually, people move to be closer to a grocery store,” he said. Rob Playter, a 20-year resident of McMurray Avenue, said that once upon a time 108 Vine Ave. used to be home to a grain mill and there used to be a gas station at Vine and Pacific avenues. “Things are so much better now and you’re upset about a grocery store,” he said. If you would like further details, email city planner Waltho at dwaltho@toronto. ca or Doucette at councillor_doucette@toronto.ca

EVERYDAY PEOPLE: After weeks of construction delays, the new Sorauren Park Town Square is finally open. Despite a hot and humid Monday night, residents of Parkdale and Roncesvalles Village were eager to welcome the city’s newest public space - with a zumba class. The space was outfitted with new pavement, a lush lawn and planted trees residents quickly began to water at the opening. Students of Howard Junior Public School also held a dance-a-thon fundraiser to install two new benches in the park. City councillor Gord Perks thanked the Wabash Building Society for its continued efforts in creating a multi-purpose space. “Already we see people out singing and dancing together and we’re going to be able to get a much more vibrant farmers’ market and movie nights and ways of just bringing the whole neighbourhood together,” he told The Villager following the opening.

Help plan Toronto’s public spaces Have your say this summer in how City of Toronto planners plan the city’s public spaces. The month-long Planners in Public Spaces initiative invites residents to learn about planning issues, hear what planners do, find out how they can get more involved in planning and ask questions about planning and development in the City of Toronto.

Attend a blue City of Toronto tent information booth at shopping malls, neighbourhood events, farmers’ markets and other popular summer locations across the city from July 10 to Aug. 27, including at Dufferin Grove Farmers Market July 10 This year’s events will focus on three significant city planning initiatives: consultation on reducing traffic conges-

tion and improving public transit; a plan to introduce a development permit system to streamline and provide certainty in the planning process; and an engagement initiative with city planners asking residents how the city can improve public consultation as part of the planning process.

The new kitchen was made possible through a partnership with easyhome Ltd.
