What’s more adorable than a child in sunglasses?
As the minister at Windermere United Church, Alexa Gilmour has had ample opportunity to take part in and witness good deeds in action. She has several
examples at the ready. When her congregation was caring for a refugee family, she realized they needed someone to cut hair. And so, she didn’t hesitate to approach a stylist at a local salon. As luck would have it, this very stylist was looking
for a way she could give back to her community, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. “‘All I know how to do is cut hair’,” Gilmour said she told her. In another instance, a father of three children, whose wife had breast >>>CHURCH, page 12

Shakespeare meets the ’60s in The Merry Wives of Windsor

Good ‘ol time
LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Shakespeare is gettin’ groovy, man. The Humber River Sh a k e s p e a re Co m p a n y (HRSC) is swinging into the ’60s with its summer tour of The Merry Wives of Windsor. “It’s not often performed, but it is one of the more accessible Shakespeare plays,” said artistic director Kevin Hammond. “It’s a very lighthearted situation comedy. It’s the first sitcom.” The story focuses on the bumbling drunk and womanizing Falstaff who infiltrates the world of Windsor. The women there are affluent and quick to see his game. “I l i k e n W i n d s o r t o Muskoka cottage country. The people have wealth and time and just sort of sit back and entertain one another,” Hammond said. “Then this outsider comes to town and creates chaos. Everyone works to get back at him.” Hammond said even though Falstaff is a lazy slob, there’s a likeability to him. “There’s something wonderful about someone who can honour and live with his own impulses, even to excess,” he said. The idea of excess led Hammond to set the play in the 1960s. “It’s the time where you have this burgeoning middle class that didn’t really exist before,” he said. “There’s this idea of leisure, acquisition and wealth that the previous generation didn’t have.” Another thing in excess is the number of characters the ensemble cast brings to life. Six actors play 17 different roles.

Claire Frances Muir, left, Paula Shultz, Kevin Hammond and Phillip Psutka appear in a scene from the Humber River Shakespeare ensemble’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Actor Paula Shultz plays Mistress Page, a suitor named Slender and a servant to Doctor Caius. “It’s pretty fast paced, but we’re having a great time playing all of the different characters,” she said. “It keeps us on our toes.” She said there’s a visibility to the costume and character West Toronto tour dates: n July 25 & 26 Montgomery’s Inn n July 28 & 29 - Old Mill Inn and Spa, Toronto (Guaranteed performance, rain or shine) n July 30 - Etienne Brulé Park n July 31, Aug. 1 & 2 Montgomery’s Inn
changes, and that the audience is in on the joke. “We’re not running behind a curtain or into a tent to change,” she said. “There’s no sense in trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the audience.” For those pondering to go or not to go out of fear the complicated language will be too confusing, Hammond said this warm-spirited play will be a merry experience for families and first-time Shakespeare-goers. “There’s very little verse in this play. It’s pretty much all prose. It’s sounds modern and it’s easy to follow,” he said. “There’s really just one plot that drives the whole thing.” Hammond said there is something special about bringing theatre to communities and performing
outdoors. “When you move outside, the audience is more present because they’re not doused in darkness,” he said. “You see them, which is the way Shakespeare plays were originally done, in the open air under the sky.” Hammond encourages people of all ages to head outside to witness the farout farce. “It offers an experience that isn’t available on Netflix,” he laughed. The HRSC Merry Wives of Windsor tour started July 2 and runs until Aug. 2. They will be in West Toronto starting July 27. Performances are paywhat-you-can with a $20 suggested donation.

L
ast week, Mayor John Tory took to Twitter to ask Torontonians where the ‘Toronto’ sign, now in front of Nathan Phillips Square, should travel
next. Ideas for where the huge multi-coloured sign will be accepted until the end of the Parapan Am Games (Aug. 15) and should be Tweeted to @JohnTory with the hashtag #TORONTOsign The fun social media campaign is looking to crowdsource ideas for where the sign should be placed next – it’s scheduled to stay in front of Toronto City Hall until the end of the year. In a short video introducing the campaign, Tory cites places such as High Park, YongeDundas Square, and even jokes about putting the sign outside the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, home of the NHL’s Senators. Suggestions and photographs our view with the sign plunked somewhere in Toronto have started coming in: Build unity the new George Brown Campus, the Scarborough Bluffs, a resiby sharing dential neighbourhood, and even our sign perched atop the CN Tower. Some ideas are funny, others logical, and some just ridiculous. However, what this sign does offer Torontonians is a way to weigh in on how the city can connect. It’s one city, so the #TORONTOsign should visit every corner of Toronto. It would be a great way to build unity across the city. Imagine coming upon the sign in Mel Lastman Square, at Artscape Wychwood Barns, or the Guild Inn Park. Maybe as an entry point along the major highways coming into the city. How about walking along Queen Street in Parkdale and coming upon the sign at the amphitheatre at Dufferin Street? Maybe Councillor Norm Kelly is right, and the sign could sit above the Scarborough Bluffs looking out across Lake Ontario. How about Sunnyside Beach, the Financial District, Todmorden Mills or the Junction train platform? Toronto is considered a city within a park so why not do a travelling park tour? One thing is certain: the sign, installed for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, shouldn’t outstay its welcome. It should be on a tour of the city until it lets Torontonians feel they have connected with other Torontonians. This tour could pique interest in other areas of the city many people have not seen. It’s tough to get the west to travel east, or the north to head south. But, a #TORONTOsign might jump-start that migration.

Pondering a new role for UP Express route
N
ext week, the tunnel connecting the mainland to Billy Bishop Airport on the Toronto Islands will be open to the air-travelling public – becoming the second piece of air-travel infrastructure to come online in Toronto this year. The first opened its doors less than a month ago – the Union Pearson Express train service running from Union Station through Weston to Pearson International Airport. It is telling that these two pieces – one privately funded and the other using federal and provincial dollars – are providing transportation services to people with passports and plane tickets and cash. Meanwhile, transit improvements for the rest of us, simply trying to get around town day-to-day, plod along at their own pace, in the best case
david nickle the city fully funded and at worst pie-in-the-sky political dreams. It is in this context that I look at the TTCriders’ suggestion last weekend, that Metrolinx simply give up the Union Pearson Express as a mass-transit route, with a bit more sympathy than usual. The advocacy group based its argument on what seems a dubious study of its own, spending a morning rush-hour counting the number of riders going in and out of the Pearson station of the line, and counted just 14 on each train. Metrolinx offers up slightly better numbers and maintains that the new $27.50-a-ride train to the airport is a success. Yet, there is compelling reason to think about
what the express might do for the morning commute – and that has to do with the morning commute itself. As matters stand, the TTC is busting at the seams, and city council, in its wisdom, has decided to prioritize costly transit improvements that won’t provide relief very soon and will likely become even more costly. The Scarborough subway extension council approved will likely have to be realigned, to make way for Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack surface rail that follows at a point the precise same route as the subway. And SmartTrack could run into its own problems, particularly in the west end through Etobicoke, on land that the city no longer owns. UP commuter train? Putting commuters on trains on the Union
Pearson line would immediately reduce the need, if there ever was one, for that western SmartTrack line. It is not, of course, as easy as that. The 15-minute service currently available in each direction for SmartTrack would probably have to be increased. Politically, abandoning air travellers for transit users would involve a mea culpa for the Wynne government and Metrolinx that might be untenable. It is, however, easy to get resentful while packed into a subway car, thinking of the ease that those few well-heeled travellers have now, making their way from their suite at the Royal York Hotel to the departure lounge at Pearson. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Police confirm murder at Foundry home ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
A routine call to check out an insecure home near Davenport Road and Lansdowne Avenue sparked a homicide investigation involving multiple jurisdictions, police say. Toronto police were called to Foundry Avenue July 12 to find out why a home was left open. On scene police say they
found evidence of a murder. The investigation then led police to Wainfleet, Ont. Forensic officers from Toronto were in the rural township in Niagara Region for the past week. “They have now determined that a homicide actually has occurred,” Const. Victor Kwong said by phone, prior to a press conference Wednesday afternoon. Police identified the victim
as Shawn Kapadia a 21-yearold Mississauaga resident who was recently reported missing. His body has not been found. He has been declared Toronto’s 27th murder victim of 2015. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 ext. 77418 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Church wants to expand program locally >>>from page 1 cancer, was looking for a way he could celebrate her birthday, yet, he wasn’t sure how he was going to feed his family for the next few days. Gilmour said she sought help from a local restaurant owner, who had toyed with the idea of providing a free meal to a family once a month. “That’s where the idea sparked,” Gilmour told The Villager. “Our experience, at Windermere, has been that people want to give and feel good when they do. They just don’t always know where their unique skills and gifts are most helpful.” R e c e n t l y, G i l m o u r
pitched her church’s social enterprise idea during The Social Innovation Challenge, which has been described as a ‘Dragon’s Den’ for dogooders,’ she said, referencing the CBC reality TV series that features entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas in order to secure investment finance from a panel of venture capitalists. Similarly, the Social Innovation Challenge that took place in Toronto June 26-27 provides an opportunity for people with ideas to meet with funders who want to support people and projects that are committed to making changes in their
local neighbourhoods and communities. There are three community housing neighbourhoods in Ward 13, Gilmour pointed out. “We’ve been giving residents grocery cards, but it takes more than grocery cards to feed the soul.” Gilmour’s initiative, coined ‘Communities that Care,’ garnered third prize at the challenge. The recognition came with $1,500 cash and $2,100 in small business social enterprise coaching. Windermere United Church is using the prize money to expand the Communities that Care idea into a viable pro-
gram in Bloor West Village, Swansea and surrounding neighbourhoods. It is seeking any partners who are willing to contribute to the initiative, individuals and businesses. The goal is to connect resources to people in need, Gilmour said. During the challenge, Gilmour gave her 60-second pitch. On the following day, she was one of four finalists, whittled down from the top 20, who were given five minutes to share their ideas, and a Q&A.

Cancer patients can find their creative outlet in Art for Cancer LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Kelly Thorarinson and her husband had only been married for a year-and-ahalf when he was diagnosed with cancer; three weeks earlier, they learned they were expecting. Not even two years after her husband died from the illness, Thorarinson found out she had breast cancer. Just how did she cope with such devastating news in the midst of her grief, still fresh? Thorarinson said she turned to art for solace, something she already did as a hobby. A social worker at Princess Margaret Hospital suggested Thorarinson connect with Cid Palacio, founder of the Art for Cancer Foundation. “I’m just so glad it exists,” Thorarinson told The Villager. “It’s a space where I can meet other people, where we
can just be creative and paint. It’s been a fantastic outlet for me.” Art for Cancer Foundation, a non-profit, volunteer-run charitable organization, strives to improve the quality of life for those living with cancer, ‘by providing an outlet for creative expression through the arts.’ The foundation celebrated the grand opening of its permanent space, the AFC Place, on Davenport Road, just west of Symington Avenue, Thursday, July 16, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and guided tours. AFC Place is dedicated to providing free creative programs on a regular basis for people living with cancer. The brainchild of Palacio, she established the charity after losing both her parents to cancer within 15 months of each other. “I’d get up at 4 a.m. and explore with acrylic,” she recalled. “I’d paint from 4

to 6 in the morning. I must have done 400 paintings. This is what kept me grounded, sane.” The Art for Cancer Foundation is not about therapy, Palacio stressed. “We’re therapeutic art,” she said. Since its inception, the workshops offered have grown from 11 to 72 last year. Princess Margaret Hospital c a r r i e s A r t f o r Ca n c e r Foundation brochures in its library. Entirely self-funded and volunteer-run, the organization relies on such fundraisers as the Scotiabank Marathon, this year taking place Oct. 18. It is seeking walkers and runners who would like to participate in support of the Art for Cancer Foundation.

Leslie Barns facility delayed again Toronto artists entertain on 311 The Leslie Barns maintenance and storage facility for the TTC’s new streetcar fleet is delayed yet again. Leslie Street was supposed to have re-opened in July, delayed from June after a private contractor’s error required the concrete track bed from Commissioners Street to Queen Street to be torn up and rebuilt. The problem is now fixed but more time was needed for the project’s engineering contractor to review final designs for the work which TTC spokesperson Brad Ross termed as more complicated than usual because of technical requirements. Leslie Street is now slated to re-open next month, but the facility won’t open until late September – if there’s no further delay.
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Members of the transit advocacy group went to the UP station at Toronto Pearson airport last Thursday to count the number of morning rushhour passengers using the four-stop premium transit line. They claim to have spotted just an average of 14 people using the service over a two-hour period, which works out to eight per cent of total capacity per train. Metrolinx reported recently ridership is at 3,250 passengers a day, in line with its first-year projections for UP which began running in early June. It’s projecting 2.5 million annual UP customers over the long-term, enough to recover day-to-day costs.

SUBWAY STARTS on sunday CONSIDERED wEARLY
This upcoming Sunday will be the last scheduled early opening for the subway as the Pan Am Games come to a close. For the past two Sundays, trains have started operating at 6 a.m., three hours earlier than usually scheduled to help transport Games spectators. While the TTC claims it needs the three hours to get the trains ready for regular 9 a.m. service, it is looking into options for speeding up that needed work to allow for consistent early openings.
