Red Jacket members of the Reach One, Save One program at Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School met with members of the All About Art Club for a creative afternoon.
By Katherine Mace CONTRIBUTOR
The girls were on an adventure weekend, and Sun City was a primary destination. As guests of the All About Art Club, the red-jacketed young women looked striking as they arrived with their mentors, Sun City residents Carol Hillman and Lynn Mooney. They were met by club member watercolorists Judy Van Caster, Mary Lynn Rooke and Mary Treadwell. Most of the girls were not new to painting, but they relished the opportunity. “I feel like an artist,” said sophomore Geovanna Cruz, as she practiced a technique for the first time. “You ARE an artist,” said Rooke with a smile. The young women are all members of Reach One, Save One (ROSO) at Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School. Dr. L. R. Dinkins, vice principal at the school, started the ROSO mentoring program. Sophomore Nykierra Scott described its importance: “It doesn’t matter where you’re from. It’s where you’re going. Ms. Carol and her husband have dedicated their lives to ROSO. They have opened our eyes, and taught us to get more out of life.” Carol Hillman and her husband, Arnold, are lifelong educators who developed schol-
arship programs in Pennsylvania to send needy rural students to college. When they retired to South Carolina, they discovered the ROSO program. It was a perfect fit for them. In 2015, the first year of the Hillman’s involvement, Carol met with many girls at RHHS and chose those who would open up and discuss things. As the girls graduate, others are picked for ROSO, which is maintained at about 10 girls. The program has blossomed, and now the members each mentor a fifth grader. There is also a young men’s group at RHHS facilitated by Arnold Hillman. A defining image is their red jackets. Each ROSO member has one. The idea for this weekend-away came from the ROSO girls who developed a plan to present to their principal. They would raise money by showing the movie, “Home Alone.” Attendance would be a privilege for students with good attendance and behavior. More than 400 students were there to enjoy the film and refreshments. The girls set the prices, did the work, and made more than $800. Mooney worked with Hillman to request donations. Hampton Inn donated overnight accommodations and Mi Tierrita restau-

MENTOR from page 3SC rant provided lunch. The generosity of the community was so incredible that donations were used beyond this specific weekend, and included a three-course meal from Truffles, a gift of money from the Sisterhood of Temple Oseh Shalom, and lunch with the USCB Dean of Admissions, who introduced a current student to speak about how to succeed in college. These impressive young ladies are talented, articulate and aiming high. Lakasia Hargrove, a junior, said, “I started ROSO when I was in ninth grade. It is like a sisterhood. It teaches leadership, and holds us to a higher standard.” Senior Traniqua Williams-Ferrell described her experience: “Before this group, I was quiet. I started as a freshman. They brought me out of my shell. I skipped 11th grade and am going to college. I’ve already been accepted at two, TCL (Technical College of the Lowcountry) and Gardner Webb University. I haven’t decided where I’ll go yet.” Hillman and Mooney are also aiming high. “Arnold and I are grateful to the staff Mary Treadwell of the All About Art club demonstrates a painting technique for Traniqua Wiland faculty of the Jasper County School liams-Ferrell, a member of Reach One, Save One during a field trip in February.

District for trusting us with their students,” Hillman said. “We believe the only way to learn about a school, its students, and community is to show up and listen. We need to be around young people. They make us laugh. These young women also know how to argue their points. They know they can question us. We develop mutual respect.” “I watch and see them grow and be more confident. They are developing leadership skills,” Mooney said. “They know how to deal with authority figures in a constructive way. They model behavior for the other kids at the high school, and also for the fifth graders that they mentor. Everyone in this group really wants to try to go to college and have opportunities!” As these remarkable young women, mentors, and artists painted throughout the afternoon, mutual respect permeated the gathering. Skilled fliers, consumers of roadkill, vultures are amazing
JOHN BURRACK
Black vultures eat carrion, or roadkill, and do not follow ambulances carrying humans.
By David Smith CONTRIBUTOR
Most days when we look into the sky over Sun City, we can see several large dark birds slowly soaring high above in circular patterns. These birds are most likely vultures, an often misunderstood and sometimes scorned creature. While graceful and beautiful in flight, their featherless heads, hooked beaks, and relatively large size make them appear threatening and definitely not pretty up close. There are two types of vultures commonly found year-round in the Lowcountry and throughout the Southeast USA. Black vultures are black with greyish black heads and turkey vultures are slightly larger, dark brown birds with red heads, which sometimes leads them to be incorrectly called turkey buzzards. Vultures are among the world’s most skilled flyers; riding thermals, columns of rising, warm air, they can stay aloft for hours while expending minimal energy. With binoculars or in the right lighting conditions, the light-colored wingtips of the black vultures can be distinguished from the turkey vulture, whose wings are light colored across their entire rear edge. Vultures are scavengers whose primary food source is roadkill – and with more than a million animals killed annually on
our nation’s roadways, the vultures actually provide a valuable ecological service. Their cleaning up of carcasses helps prevent the spread of diseases to other wildlife, pets and humans. Though their preferred diet is fresh meat, they are able to consume carcasses that have rotted so much that the meat is toxic to other animals. The extraordinary sense of smell of turkey vultures allows them to locate carrion from more than a mile away, an attribute very unique in the bird world. Black vultures often join turkey vultures who have already settled on a meal. Vultures are communal birds, living in flocks both large and small. They roost in trees, which can be a problem if they are near your yard, as flocks can be quite smelly, due to their eating habits. Some Sun City residents are concerned about the apparent gathering of vultures along the lagoon by our front gate, potentially giving the community a bad image. Those similar sized, dark-colored birds drying themselves by many of our lagoons are actually cormorants, which are fish-eating birds. The only reason for vultures to gather on the ground by a lagoon or elsewhere would be to eat a dead animal. Humans have nothing to fear from vultures despite the myth that they follow ambulances into Sun City. Let’s instead appreciate them for their cleanup service. David Smith is a resident of Sun City.

Helpful husband’s timing leaves ring around the tushy By Chris Roosa CONTRIBUTOR
Five days after we moved to Sun City, I was climbing up a ladder to place some knick-knacks above the kitchen cabinets. I don’t know where my mind was, but I fell off the ladder and broke my hip. We didn’t know a soul in South Carolina. Upon arriving at the wonderful Coastal Carolina Hospital, I was immediately taken for an MRI – whereupon somehow my leg, to the broken hip, dropped off the X-ray table. Ouch! Surgery to place pins in the hip began a long journey to recovery. Once back home, I soon realized that I couldn’t hike my broken limb up the 4 feet to get onto our super high fluffy mattress. I ended up in the guest bedroom for months, because that was a low antique bed. My sweet husband had never so much as boiled water, nor had he ever done any domestic chores, since the day we married. Recovery dinners consisted of macaroni and cheese, hot dogs or hamburgers.
Months passed by with no healing for this little woman, yet the hot dogs kept rolling up to my bedside. I had heard that there were Casserole Queens living in Sun City. At the sign of any new single man, these ladies would

storm out of the woodwork, plying any eligible bachelor with some little delicacy. I told my husband to take off his wedding ring, hook up the two scraggly canines and rush them to the dog park. I was insistent that he not return home without some scrumptious casserole in hand. Eventually, I could get up and around just a bit. One day, I was leaning against the sink staring into the mirror. My greasy hair was stuck to my scalp. I was wearing Depends because I couldn’t walk fast enough to trust myself not to wear those pretty little “recovery panties.”
I took a good look at this filthy, smelly, grease-ball of a human being staring back at me, and just sobbed. Loudly I said to the eyesore of a reflection, “Look at how filthy he keeps you!” I hadn’t had a shower or sponge bath in over a week. That’s not to say Mr. Husband didn’t help me at all. On one occasion, he helped lower me onto the toilet. As soon as I was situated, he said that he’d be back in a minute to lift my painful body back up. Ninety-five minutes later, he returned to my rescue. Now, mind you, I’m glued to the toilet for the length of his “minute” – and THEN found out he had gone to Walmart! By then I had a permanent ring around my tushy. Eight months later, we were notified that the hip had not healed, so I then had a hip replacement. Yep, he was still my caretaker for the second go-around. Good thing I like mac and cheese. Chris Roosa is a resident of Sun City Hilton Head.
