Give your career
the thumbs up!
BMF launches national Youth Recruitment Campaign Young people are the lifeblood of any industry and many young people leaving school - and their careers advisors - often overlook the range of rewarding career opportunities offered by builders, timber, and plumbing and heating merchants and their suppliers. To educate, inform and encourage young people into our industry, the BMF has launched a national youth recruitment campaign this month aimed at 16-19 year olds. The campaign is designed to make teachers, careers advisors and job centres aware of the many rewarding, diverse and challenging opportunities offered by our industry and to encourage them to actively promote merchanting as a career choice. Posters and brochures have been sent to 750 job centres and over 7,500 schools, colleges and academies to coincide with the start of the new school year. Further information is available on a dedicated website www.merchant-recruitment.co.uk and there is also a Facebook page at merchant recruitment and Twitter page @BMF_Youth You can help us too in our promotion! All members will be receiving a pack of the material, extra copies of which can be obtained from june.upton@bmf.org.uk
You can also personalise the promotional material with your own company logo and address to send out locally, details and costs of which can be obtained by contacting chris.harding@bmf.org.uk We are inviting students to a BMF Recruitment Open Day at our Coventry Headquarters on 21 October, where school leavers and job applicants will have the opportunity to talk to merchants, suppliers, trainers and past apprentices to find out what a career in merchanting involves. We have some 30 stands available to book at a cost of just £95.00 for the day and you can contact june.upton@bmf.org.uk to book.
John Newcomb said: “Attracting young, talented people is absolutely vital if our industry is going to thrive and develop in the future. Our campaign will promote the tremendous opportunities available to them. It will also ensure that careers advisors understand our apprenticeship scheme and the sound foundation this provides for progressive vocational training including a diploma, a foundation degree and post graduate diploma leading to a master’s degree.” Contact Peter.Matthews@bmf.org.uk for further information.

Conservative MP, Brandon Lewis, became the new Minister of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government, following the government re-shuffle and the decision to combine both housing policy and the planning system together.
The BMF Consumer Conditions of Sale have been updated due to the recent changes in the way merchants have to deal with consumer customers when making sales over the phone, on-line, etc. and when concluded away from your business premises. This means that you must confirm specific contract information by letter or email and allow a 14-day “cooling off” period.
In his first fortnight in the job he wrote to the BMF thanking us for sending him our Policy Manifesto and reaffirming his government’s commitment to do all he can to support the building industry. He welcomed the BMF initiative to support both merchants and suppliers to help get house building moving again.
Full details are available in the new guidance booklet. BMF members can obtain a free copy from peter.matthews@bmf.org.uk

Jackson Buildbase are BMF MasterMerchant 2014 Champions Jackson Buildbase are the new BMF MasterMerchant champions for 2014. The team ‘Aces of Base’, one of three teams entered by Jacksons Buildbase, comprised Steven Dawber, Chris Newstead, Craig Harrison and Craig Gration who work together at Jackson Buildbase Skegness branch. The competition this year was a complete sell out with some 15 teams taking part in the fiercely contested physical and mental challenges over two glorious days of weather in the magnificent Lake District. Other teams taking part were from J T Atkinson, J T Dove, Gibbs & Dandy, Jewson, MKM, Parker Building Supplies, Simpson & Allinson, West Building Supplies, and Willbonds, and the BMF who put a team in for the first time. The competition stretched the team to their limits with the physical challenges, which included walking, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and gorge walking as well as tackling a variety of tasks that challenged their teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. Assistant branch manager and winning team member Steven Dawber: said: “This is the second time that the Skegness team has taken part in MasterMerchant and it was a fantastic achievement to come out as winners. The challenges were all great
