Welcome to the Conference
John Newcomb, BMF Managing Director
I am delighted to welcome everyone to Vilamoura, to the Tivoli Marina Hotel and to the 2013 All Industry Conference. This year’s Conference is organised by the BMF and supported by NMBS, Unimer and the whole industry. Every merchant and building material supplier, regardless of location or size, whether generalist or specialist, has been encouraged to join us and I’m pleased that a great many have done so. We have chosen a theme, Fit for the Future, to ensure that delegates and sponsors return home with ideas and talking points to help their businesses flourish. It’s been nine years since the BMF last hosted the industry’s Conference and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. The market was driving forward at full throttle when the crash came, followed by the longest period of recession most of us have experienced. But when the going gets tough, that’s when a really tough industry John Newcomb gets going. The market will recover, and the government’s recent pledge to support the housing sector may prove the kick start it needs. We want to ensure the merchant industry is Fit for the Future with companies planning for the upturn and preparing to make the most of growth opportunities. Which is what this year’s Conference is all about. We have an abundance of top-flight speakers from our own industry and beyond to inform and inspire, co-ordinated by TV personality Ben Shephard. Our interactive format will give you a chance to have your say and there will be time and opportunity to network with colleagues both informally, and formally at Meet the Merchant sessions. This is your Conference. Make the most of the business sessions. Enjoy the fabulous leisure facilities. And return to your businesses refreshed, revitalised and Fit for the Future. I look forward to catching up with you all.

Welcome from Fakro: Headline Sponsor
Noel Shanahan, Fakro GB Managing Director At Fakro we are always keen to support our builders merchant customer base. We are, therefore, immensely proud of the fact that we are the Headline Sponsor for this event and look forward to joining with BMF and the rest of the industry to bring you this year’s All-Industry Conference. We believe in working together to make the best business we can. Our merchant customers pride themselves on their service to their customers and we know that, in turn, they require us to provide them with the best service, the best products and the best prices that we can. One of the best things about this industry is the close working relationships that are forged over time. Networking has become a staple part of how we do business together. Noel Shanahan In good times and tough times, it’s always been useful to be able to build on relationships between us and our customers and other suppliers. Conferences are the ideal place to forge new relationships, build on existing friendships and discuss the business and we at Fakro expect this year’s event to bring major networking and, hopefully, business benefits to all who attend. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to all delegates – merchants and fellow sponsors – and we hope to catch up with most, if not all of you, at some point during the three days.

Now with ex-stock availability, the argument for any other system holds no water... If the scientists are right, one thing we can be sure of in the future is more frequent, heavier weather putting extra strain on our rainwater infrastructure. So with unexpected downpours just around the corner, it’s important to know you not only have the best rainwater system, but also a system you can get your hands on quickly. Choosing Alumasc gives you just that. The UK’s market leading system now features an extensive range of aluminium and cast iron products, all available ex-stock with an unrivalled lead time of just 3 days, or even next day for projects carrying tight deadlines. Combine these impressive lead times with the ability to withstand a 1 in 500 year weather event and you have a solution perfectly tailored to meet the needs of modern building projects. Also Available: Pre-painted traditional Cast Iron Rainwater range for heritage applications.

Get Involved with the Conference! Live blog, Twitter, App, Text-in
It’s an All Industry Conference and we will be harnessing the very latest communication technology to involve as many people as possible in the event – as it happens. As Conference Communication Partners, BMJ will be ensuring that delegates and anyone back home unable to attend can still get up-to-the-minute information from the conference programme. We will be reporting on the seminars as they happen throughout the conference through the buildersmerchantsjournal.net Live Blog - publishing quotes and analysis on each seminar as they progress. We will also be monitoring Twitter; if you want to interact with us while we’re at the conference, tweet with the hashtag #fitforthefuture. The best tweets will appear in our conference coverage. You can also access the blog content through the All-Industry Conference App, created by BMJ and downloadable from both the Apple App Store and Google Play. During the seminar sessions, delegates will be asked a number of questions, the answers to which willl be collected via a special SMS Text service; results will be posted within about 30 seconds of the votes coming in. The Location Vilamoura
Vilamoura is one of the largest and most popular holiday destinations on the Algarve, in southern Portugal. The smart and chic marina is a focal point of the area, but beyond that, Vilamoura offers plenty of sights and activities. For sports fans, the region is home to six golf courses and the Vilamouraténis Centre, which features a tennis club, a horse riding school, a gun club, a cinema and a selection of water sports to choose from. On either side of the marina, the sandy beaches offer various amenities and several cafes and bars. Vilamoura is the name given to the area rather than to any actual town. It is one of the largest single tourist complexes in Europe, covering around 2.000 hectares of land. The counyryside is rich and varied; from pine forests to open recovered marshland. In the centre of Vilamoura, the preserved Cerro da Vila Roman Site and Museum provides an interesting glimpse into the area’s history. In Roman times, the site was important in producing a fish paste known as ‘garum’. It was also the location of a Roman bath, in which mariners used to bathe.
Vilamoura - Nearby Locations
Neighbouring the area is the once small fishing village of Quarteira. Since the 1960s, it has blossomed into a dormitory town. To the northeast is the commercial and administrative town of Loulé. The Algarve’s cuisine is mainly fish and shellfish, but there are still plenty of options for meat lovers. The area boasts a variety of international restaurants offering French, Indian, Chinese, Swiss and Italian cuisine.
