amongst you will find golden sunsets and lovers on headlands. If you long for the wilder side, or the simply sublime these aspects are here too. The artists’ experiences of these islands are unique, just as it is for each and every visitor. Prepare to be enchanted.

My paintings emerge from a cocktail of sketches, photographs memory and imagination. I love the dynamic and fluid nature of watercolour paint and it seems to particularly suit a place like Tresco. By letting the paint wash, drip and flow across my paintings I hope to capture the forever changing layers of

sea, sky and sand that I have seen and enjoyed.

I make an annual pilgrimage to the north end of Tresco. I am drawn to the near and far of this place, its puckered

moss-like wind-cropped heather

brooding against the shine of the wild Atlantic. It’s as if the gentle slope of this plateau tips ones thoughts towards a bigger space.

Walking around the islands looking for a dramatic view I am always spoilt for choice; my paintings this year are from a variety of amazing viewpoints whether high up on the rocks at St Martin’s or low on the beach at several places on Tresco or St Mary's. There surely is a never-ending choice of where to begin. The hard part is selecting those to send over for the exhibition. If the place I have chosen to paint is not a precise representation this is because I aim to express my experience of being amidst the colours of the sky and sea, the shore structures and the whole of nature. So here is my selection: quite a mixture of colour and surface texture.

I have visited Scilly since childhood and it has always had a special place in my heart, so with this body of work I wanted to capture the magic of the islands. The changing light, vast open skies and vivid colours that dominate Scilly where my main focus alongside

the shimmering white sands and azure

waters that populate many happy memories.

This year’s show for me is a tale of two seasons ... a wonderfully atmospheric

painting visit in March which held me

spellbound, whilst latterly … fog

bound! Enabling me to have three

precious further days to develop my

work. My show last August coincided with Regatta Week and a Real Ale

Festival at the New Inn, where I was

staying. This afforded me a fine coign of vantage to view and capture

something of the flavour of the event.

I have great memories made on Tresco. It is one of the few places that I feel free to

roam and relax. I know there is a place I can return to to feel the sand between

my feet and shelter amongst the rocks on

the headland to feel the force of nature.

It is all on there on Tresco for the mind body and the eyes.

Working on Tresco in winter was as lovely as ever. The holidaymakers have

gone and the light is sharp and clear -

’’

when the rain stops! Light is what does it for me - the changing skies and

reflected colours are even more

stunning in winter: some of the best

sunsets I have ever seen have been on the island in November. Coming back

to a cosy cottage and lighting the fire to work again in the evening on pictures of flowers gathered during the

day is my idea of heaven.

Spending one month on Tresco making sketches is the idyllic approach to escaping from reality and focusing on

developing a body of paintings.

’’

Anyone who has visited Tresco would understand the escapist sensation that

surrounds the island. Using thick

textures observed directly from the

landscape and vivid colours documented in my sketchbook, these

paintings are made to capture a small yet significant piece of that sensation, to be hung as a reminder of those good times.
