Silver Coast

Beaches

With over 850km of coastline, Portugal has some of the most spectacular beaches and seascapes in the world. Visitors can sunbathe along the white sand, surf the beautiful waters, explore nature and enjoy cafes and restaurants with fresh seafood dishes .... something for everyone.

Many of the most popular beaches have sheltered areas for swimming and are patrolled by lifeguards. The sea side towns of Peniche, Nazaré and Figueira da Foz are renowned for top quality surfing, body boarding, diving and other water-sports and excellent fish restaurants. Baleal beach

The Blue Flag scheme began in 1985 and is currently recognised in 41 countries throughout Europe. The strict criteria cover many aspects including cleanliness, environmental management and safety with regular checks to ensure that standards are upheld. Of the 275 blue flag beaches in Portugal, 49 are situated on the Silver Coast.

Safety in the water During the summer many beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and display the safety flags. Be aware also that along this western Atlantic coastline the ocean can be pretty wild with a

heavy undertow so some of the more remote beaches can be dangerous. • Don't go into the sea for three hours after eating. • Try to go into the water with a friend so that one of you can call for help if the other gets into difficulty. • After sun bathing go into the water slowly as your body needs time to adjust to the change in temperature, jumping straight in can be dangerous.

According to tradition, the recipe for this famous sponge cake, Pão-de-Ló, belongs to the nuns of the Convent of Coz, and was passed on to some local women who baked it for festive occasions. The fame of the Alfeizerão sponge cake is connected to a visit made to this town by the King D. Carlos who was served a cake, which due to the baker’s eagerness to please, was not fully cooked. Despite this, the King praised it and the reputation for this cake continues to gain enthusiasts within and outside of Portugal.

Nazaré

It is said that picturesque Nazaré got its name from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought from Nazareth by a monk in the 4th century. This famous fishing town has three main areas; The Praia (beach), Sítio and Pederneira, the original settlement. The Praia and Sítio are linked by the Nazaré Funicular which climbs 110m (360 ft). A spectacular view, all of Nazaré can be seen from here. With an atmosphere of times gone by, until recently, fishermen used oxen to pull brightly painted boats from the ocean. Even today many locals still wear traditional costumes - the men in checked shirts and trousers, and the women with six layers of petticoats over flannel skirts. Today Nazaré is a busy tourist town with a colourful seafront filled with souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. 20

Surf in Nazaré

The town of Nazaré made history in 2012 when it entered the race for the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. A wave of about 30 metres was caught by Garrett McNamara at North Beach. This raised the bar for the world record. This part of the Portuguese coast offers exceptional conditions for the practice of ‘wave sports’ due to the action of the offshore ‘Nazaré Canyon’. This underwater canyon spans 170km, with a depth of 5,000 metres, which can provide massive waves. A ‘sea of challenges’, Nazaré is established as one of the most sought after destinations for intrepid surfers from around the world. 25

There are many stories surrounding the women of Nazaré and their habit of wearing seven skirts. Some say it relates to the seven virtues, some the seven days of the week and others the colours of the rainbow! The town and its people have a deep attachment to the sea, and many attribute the tradition to the long hours the Nazaré women spend on the beach awaiting the return of husbands and sons from the sea. Sitting on the beach, often facing harsh weather, the women use their top skirts to shield their head and shoulders and the other layers to cover their legs thus maintaining their dignity. But the many views on the use of several skirts do not stop here. There are also those that associate it to the counting of waves with the knowledge that, after every seventh wave the sea would subside and allow a safe landing.

by David Clarke We suggest a visit to TORRES VEDRAS as it has had a long and eventful history. Human habitation in this area dates back to pre historic times but the first castle was built by the Moors and it was taken from them by the Christian king D. Alfonso Henriques in the 12th century. Since then many outstanding events have shaped the town’s history. However, the event that ensures the town’s place in history was the construction of the “Lines” of Torres Vedras. This was planned and organised by Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, as the final stand against the French. There were three Lines of defence fortifications which ran between the Atlantic coast and the river Tejo in order to protect Lisbon from the third Napoleonic Invasions during the Iberian Peninsula Wars 1810 -1811. The construction started in1809 and took 12 months to build 152 forts, earthwork fortifications and access roads taking advantage of the hilly terrain of the area. Due to the urgency of the works thousands of local people were employed in their construction under the command of Lt. Col. Fletcher and assisted by the Portuguese Royal Regiment of Engineers. When the French army arrived at Torres Vedras on their way to Lisbon they were met with a defence system which halted their advance completely as there was no way through the Lines between the sea and the river Tejo and so forcing the retreat of the French from Portugal. The Places to see in Torres Vedras are; MUSEU MUNICIPAL LEONEL TRINDADE - this houses a very interesting collection of artefacts, maps, models and audio visual screens explaining the history of the “Lines”.

THE CASTLE - first constructed by the Moors in about 920 and gradually enlarged during the middle ages and had a major reconstruction in the early 1500‘s. The castle has been involved in various battles, sieges and was incorporated into the “Lines” and finally a siege bombardments hit the gunpowder store and ended the life of the castle in1846. FORT ST. VINCENT - formed one of the 3 defences in the “Lines’ protecting Torres Vedras itself. The Fort has been repaired after years of neglect and is the best example remaining of the Major Forts in the Lines. It is located on the hill side to the north of the town and overlooks the castle and the town. OLD TOWN CENTRE - with its narrow streets tracing their medieval origins. Just to the west of the town, located on a ridge is the village of VARATOJO here is well worth visiting the Franciscan CONVENTO DE SANTO ANTONIO founded in 1470. This is beautiful building with cloisters, Portuguese tiles, chapel and is still home to a few monks. Also, from this village is an 11km WALK ALONG PART OF THE ‘LINES’ which visits the remains of 7 of the Forts (Nos 131 to 137). The above places are open every day except Mondays. However, it is best to call the Poste Turismo 261 314 094 or the Museum 261 310 485

A day in Lisbon

Built on seven hills, Lisbon a city both historical and modern has a many things to offer visitors. To better get a feel for the city it’s best to walk or travel on the historic yellow 28 trams, which run through the many historical parts of town. There are many museums including the Berardo museum of modern art, the National Coach Museum, the Museum of Antique Art and the very modern MUDE-the Design and Fashion Museum. Visit Belem’s monument, where the Portuguese ships sailed out to discover the world, or the modern Nations Park Parque das Nações leisure, commercial, and residential area sited in the Tagus estuary.

the traditional and specialist shops in Baixa (downtown) is a refreshing experience for those used to characterless shopping centres. Many shops are even worth going into for their distinctive decoration alone such as Luvaria Ulisses and Casa das Velas do Loreto. To experience the famous Lisbon nightlife, head straight to Bairro Alto, where many bars offer a wide range of music from Fado to hot African rhythms. visitportugal.com golisbon.com

Festas in Portugal

There is usually a festival of some sort going on every day somewhere in Portugal! Attending a traditional festa is a great way for any visitor to Portugal to absorb Portuguese popular culture and get to know the locals and their way of life better. Every town and village in Portugal has a patron saint, whose saint's day is celebrated with gusto by the whole community, thus fostering a sense of communal identity and local pride, long lost in many other parts of Europe. The main themes of these festas is a procession of a statue of the patron saint after Mass from the local church, accompanied by fireworks (or colourless explosions!!), music, dancing

and merriment involving masses of wine! Portugal is not just about traditional festivals - new ones are springing up all the time. Especially film, music and food festivals, often sponsored by local authorities to boost local tourism. Visit the local Tourist Offices for more information.

Pastel de Natas

Recipe

Ingredients 250g golden caster sugar 2 lemon slices 2 cinnamon sticks 250ml semi-skimmed milk 30g plain flour 20g corn flour Few drops vanilla extract 3 egg yolks, plus 1 whole egg 375g puff pastry Flour, icing sugar and cinnamon, for dusting Butter, for the muffin tray

How to make them 1 Tip the sugar, lemon and cinnamon into a pan with 125ml water and bring to a boil. Mix the flour, corn flour and vanilla with a small amount of milk until you have a smooth paste. Bring the rest of the milk to a boil, then pour it onto the flour mixture, whisking continuously. Pour back into a clean pan and bring to a simmer, whisking until the mixture thickens. Remove the cinnamon and lemon then stir both mixtures

together. Add the eggs, bring to a simmer and whisk until smooth. Pour into a jug, cover the surface and allow to cool. 2 Heat the oven to 200C/gas 7 and put a baking sheet in the oven. Roll out the puff pastry on a clean work surface lightly dusted with flour and icing sugar. Cut the pastry in half and lay one sheet on top of the other. Roll the pastry sheets up like a Swiss roll and cut the roll into twelve slices about 1cm 2cm thick. 3 Lay each of the pastry slices flat on the work surface and roll them out into 10cm discs. Press a pastry disc into each of the wells of a buttered muffin tray. Divide the custard between the pastry cases. 4 Bake the tarts for 18-20 minutes on the preheated baking sheet, or until the custard has puffed up and is pale golden-brown, and the pastry is crisp and golden-brown. Allow to cool in the tin. Before serving, dust with cinnamon and icing sugar.
