During the day with miles of beautiful unspoilt (almost empty apart from the surfers and the odd fisherman) golden sandy beaches, a warm sun pouring out of the winter sky it makes you feel relaxed and at peace with the world, no hustle and bustle, just chill 24/7.

Costa de Prata deve o seu nome ao facto de quando o Sol se põe é tão brilhante que parece prata nunca passando despercebido, quer no verão ou no inverno. Durante o dia, com quilómetros de terra intocada (praticamente vazia com exceção de alguns surfistas e um ou outro pescador), praias de areia dourada um Sol morno a espreitar no céu de inverno, faz-nos sentir relaxados e em paz com o mundo. Não há correrias, é calmo, muito calmo 24/7.

And then there are the many delicious seafood restaurants especially in Peniche, which is a main fishing port. They make wonderful seafood stews like Cataplan or Caldeirada, you won’t find a fresher catch and great value for money. With the year rushing by, if you want to get into the festive spirit visit Óbidos and you will see all the castle draped in beautiful fairy lights. It can be seen for miles around and you can wander along the cobbled streets with its Christmas market full of entertainment; view the individually decorated Christmas trees with festively adorned window boxes in nearly every house. There are lots of festive treats with locally produced gifts to buy. Not to mention the flurries of snow that cascade down from the roof top every 15 minutes. It’s not Disneyland but it certainly is its own special wonderland.

Even in winter there are still loads of activities and sports you can take part in all along the coastline. Surfing here in winter is now getting worldwide attention. And for the more adventurous, there’s the thrills and excitement of kite surfing and paragliding growing rapidly in popularity. As well as the other more regular sports that can be done all year round here like canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, golf, with its world class courses, especially at Praia D’El Rey, Bom Sucesso and the new contender designed by Seve Ballesteros at the Royal Obidos Resort. Or get on your bike if you feel like a truly exhilarating work out and head for the Serra de Montejunto mountains which offer over 120 kilometres of paths and cycle tracks across its landscape. Now that’s a good way to work up a healthy appetite.

Winter Surf Surf do inverno

ow! Just want to surf, any day, every day, all day!! With winter fast approaching, you would think a holiday resort on the Atlantic coast would start to quieten down and shut up shutters, ready for the winter storms that roll in off the sea to batter its shores. Well not the Silver Coast of Portugal, and especially not Baleal and Peniche. With surf breaks in three different directions, more and more people are flocking to this naturally, breathtakingly beautiful area. Every year its waves become more exciting and creative, calling out to be danced upon and surfed by enthusiastic, brave, often daring surfers. Not to say there isn’t surf for beginners because there are waves for everyone. With over 30 surf spots along a 20km strip of beach stretching the Baleal coastline alone and with many great surf schools to choose from, it’s perfectly safe for beginners as well. The autumn surf season begins with the Liga Meo Pro Surf competition which was held this year between the 5th and 7th

Winter Surf Surf do inverno

October at Supertubos beach. It has the best barrel beach break in Europe and it is considered one of the most daring and exciting places to surf. The Meo Pro is followed by one of the most prestigious surfing events in the world. The Rip Curl World Surfing Championships in mid October, which has firmly established itself on the beaches of Supertubos and Baleal. In fact depending on the swell the event can be held anywhere along the Baleal beach from Lagido right up to Belgas near Praia del Rey. It attracts the best surfers from every corner of the globe and many new contenders to challenge for the title. It also brings between 30-40 thousand spectators each day to watch the events and be part of all the excitement. The Moche Music festival has even put Peniche on its music hit list. This year October has seen many famous acts, singers and DJs performing live at Supertubos beach, all to coincide with the championships. Peniche fishermen rubbing

Word has it that Garrett McNamara, the 44 year old Hawaiian surfer who broke the world record last November by riding a 78ft wave in Nazaré, has now had a very special wetsuit commissioned that is equipped with an oxygen pocket. This will help save his life in the future should he ever be blessed enough to meet another epic wave here on the exhilarating coastline we call home. He doesn’t expect it to happen in his native Hawaii, he believes it will happen right here and he’s looking for a 120ft monster. He is hoping and praying that day will come soon. So to be prepared he has military-grade swell monitoring equipment and a private jet to bring him to the Silver Coast wave, that he hopes to break his own world record on. We think we are going to hear more from this guy real soon.

Undeniably, Óbidos the hillside Silver Coast town is a Portuguese treasure, a national monument and a site that is genuinely unique! This gem of a town, beautiful and charming, dreamy and romantic is a place where the Renaissance met the Baroque and lived happily ever after. Its romance was sealed with a kiss in history ever since the town that time forgot, was gifted through marriage by a King to his adoring Queen. Today, this gift is more of a magical artistic legacy.

here is a lovely candle shop in the Zona Industrial, Promol, Loja das Velas! It’s a little gem of a shop, right across the road from Restaurant Lisboa. What’s even better is the prices are great, every week they have special offers and candles which are slight seconds that they sell by the weight. They are one of the biggest candle manufacturers in Europe producing a whopping 1 million candles per day. Their Portuguese market is small, around 6% of what they sell globally. 70% of their market is German, but they do sell to good old M&S so that is definitely a bench mark of quality and reassurance. All their products are manufactured under the RAL quality safety standard requirements for candles and their packaging carries that labelling. The shop sells a great selection of candles for every occasion, weddings, birthdays, dinner parties, gifts or simply to have around the house. They have a pretty selection for Christmas, gold, silver, sparkly filled glass candles as well as the traditional red ones in many different shapes and sizes. Promol are now owned by a large Swedish company ALG who are always developing new ideas. Currently they are producing their new completely natural range, which is really exciting, and many global companies are racing to put their orders in for these new products. Promol is certainly a shining light in the area.

e run a shop in Óbidos, where we sell all kinds of products that are made locally. What better way of getting to know the region in which we live, than to go and visit the talented artists, the skilled wine makers, family jam makers, nouveau chocolatiers, experts in fused glass and families steeped in the history of making liqueurs. Then we found exceptional talents such as a self taught wood carver who has won awards in Paris for his incredible sculptures. We have a passion for fine food and wine, we really appreciate the skills of artists and crafts people and we love to find traditional methods and knowledge. Naturally we visit all of the regional fairs, gastronomic events, shows and exhibitions. There we have the opportunity to meet the people behind the products, to taste the new flavours and to meet the artists. We visit their studios and see their work; we go to the biscuit makers and smell the freshly cooked biscuits coming out of the oven; we visit the wineries and have to undergo the obligatory tasting sessions; we have even done an olive oil tasting. We choose the things that we like, that we can honestly say are made in a traditional manner or made with locally grown produce or by local artists; we hope that our customers appreciate our choices and will come back for more. Vinhos Cortém é uma vinha jovem que tem-se desenvolvido lentamente pelo Chris Price e a sua mulher Helga, tornando o que era uma vez um hobby num estilo de vida.

Why did you setup a vineyard in the Silver Coast? In 1993 Helga and I had recently met and decided to come to Portugal for a holiday. We fell in love with the area and towards the end of the holiday decided to buy a house. After a number of viewings using a local estate agent, we found this place in Cortém, which was a ruin with a fantastic view over an unspoilt valley. Helga took one look at the view and said she wanted to die here. So that was the start of our adventure. When did you produce your first wine? In 2006 we sold our first bottles of wine, we were still in an experimental stage learning as we went along, going to seminars, talking to people and of course with local help. Eventually we ended up with a 5 hectares of vines planted and a fully equipped winery, and it was at this point, with all the annual

Apaixonamos com a área e para o fim das férias decidimos comprar uma casa. Após visitarmos vários imóveis, utilizando um imobiliário local, encontramos este sítio em Cortém, que era uma ruína com vista sobre o vale preservado. Helga olhou sobre esta vista e disse que era aqui onde ela queria falecer. Então foi aqui que a aventura iniciou. Quando é que produziram o vosso primeiro vinho? Em 2006 vendemos as nossas primeiras garrafas de vinho, ainda estávamos num período experimental a aprender pelo caminho, fomos até seminários, a falar com pessoas e claro com ajuda da localidade. So I suppose at this point we began to figure out that making good and above all different tasting wines would be the key to our success. When did you decide to go organic? In 2007 we started the process of achieving the Organic certificate which takes 3 years. This means we do not use any pesticides, herbicides or industrial fertilisers on our fields. In 2010 we received our certificate for Certified Organic Grapes. How would you describe your wines now? Well some of the feedback we have had from clients is that they are dry, smooth wines and have more of a French style to them, but my opinion is that our Syrah and Jaen grapes produce a light and elegant red wine and our Cabernet Sauvignon is a heavier wine to be enjoyed by itself in a big glass. We have always made our wines in the same way, fermenting in small partly open tubs with hand stirring for at least two

Assim, pensamos que tinhamos que produzir um bom vinho com sabores alternativos para ter sucesso. Quando é que decidiram tornar orgânico? Em 2007 decidimos tornar orgânico e iniciamos o processo necessário para alcançar o certificado Orgânico, que demora 3 anos. Isto quer dizer que os nossos terrenos na levavam pesticidas, herbicidas nem fertilizantes industriais. Como descreve os seus vinhos actualmente? O feedback que recebemos de alguns clientes é que o vinho é seco e suave, e tem mais parecença com o estilo Francês. Na minha opinião os nossos castos de Syrah e Jaen produzem um vinho tinto leve e elegante e o nosso Cabernet Sauvignon é um vinho mais pesado para ser apreciado sozinho num copo grande. Sempre produzimos os vinhos com da discover 29

FOOD & DRINK. CoMiDa e bebiDa weeks. All sugars are fermented in the tub and the wine has time to extract tannins and colour from the skins. We only use a yeast from the champagne district and bacteria for the malolactic fermentation. In January and February of the following year we blend the wines into lots of 1500 or 2000 litres where they stay for 2 years in stainless steel tanks. So in the end we have up to 5 different red wines each year with about 2000-3000 bottles of each wine available. Have you won any awards for your wines? Yes, We have won a silver medal for our Jaen 2008 at the IWC 2011 in London and a silver at the Mundus Vini 2011 and bronze at the IWC 2011 for our Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009. Our most recent award was a ‘Commended’ at the IWC 2012 with our Syrah 2009. What was this year’s harvest like? This year due to the strange weather we had, very dry, cold winter and late spring, it was a very late harvest and we only finished harvesting on the 26th October, where as in previous years we would have finished 3 weeks earlier. We had to wait another three weeks for the grapes to ripen. They seem to be good and we have had double the volume of wine this year at 13000 litres. Let us see how they the wines turn out. The malolactic fermantation has to take place first, there is a lot of acidity this year. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? At the moment the winery is suffering from lack of space and we really need more to function efficiently. We have an old adega that needs to be renovated and this could become our winery of the future. Also in 5 years I will be 76 and we think it is time to look for a business partner to help with investment and the future of Cortém wines. We feel that we have built up the business to a respectable level and it is now a going concern for a young wine enthusiast looking to live in Portugal. We will certainly take part in the winemaking process in the coming years as it is still our passion! 30

A fermentação malolática é o primeiro processo e este ano vimos que existe muita acidez. Onde acham estar daqui a 5 anos? Neste momento a nossa adega está a sofrer por falta de espaço e precisamos mesmo de mais para funcionar de modo eficiente. Temos uma adega antiga que precisa de ser remodelada e pode vir a ser a adega do futuro. Também daqui a 5 anos eu já terei 76 anos e achamos que já está na altura de procurar um sócio para ajudar com o investimento e o futuro de Vinhos Cortém. roasted pork tender loin and baked potatoes with rosemary olive oil Marinate the pork for 3 to 4 hours in white wine, white port wine, garlic, ginger, bay leaf, coriander, red chilli, olive oil, salt and pepper. Begin by pan searing the loin, next finish in the oven for 20 min at 200ºC. Slice small potatoes, add salt, pepper and fresh rosemary, then cook in the oven for 40 min at 200ºC and finish with rosemary infused olive oil. lombinho do porco assado com batatas no forno com azeite de alecrim. ortugal has long been famous for Port from the Douro Valley, but did you know that it was the Silver Coast region that was the main source of Brandy for the Port houses? This was because the Silver Coast was primarily a white wine growing reqion and was even named as one of the three regions in Europe for Brandy production along with Cognac and Armagnac! Interesting, well you will find a wealth of knowledge and facts about Portuguese wine, its history, the grapes and above all learn the different tastes and flavours available from the wine touring experience at the Quinta do Sanguinhal. Sana Silver Coast Hotel D H aving stayed in several Silver Coast Hotels over the years, what can I tell you that is anything different or more inviting about the Sana Silver Coast Hotel in Caldas da Rainha above the other local establishments? It’s the new boy on the block, with a restored 19th century pink Neoclassical façade and a contemporary twist on an Art Deco interior. It is definitely working flat out, in these especially tough times in Portugal’s history, to make a five star impression, even though it’s a four star hotel. Portugal has a great reputation for wines, cheeses, fish, many different styles of local fresh breads and yummy pastries. The selection here is gastronomical. Not to mention nearly every time you order a drink it comes with some sort of side order treat of nuts, popcorn and a local sweet called Cavacas, which is served with the coffee. Many people stay in Óbidos when visiting the area, which is wonderful but often it is packed with events and tourists. The Sana is less than 10 minutes away from Óbidos, or the great beaches of Foz do Arelho, and the Óbidos Lagoon. The hotel can organise trips and sightseeing tours to one of the beautiful monasteries or churches of Alcobaça, Batalha or Fatima and the

There is the wonderful Thermal Spa Hospital, one of the oldest in the world with its history of healing waters. Built back in 1485, by the then Queen Dona Leonor, after the spa waters healed a very problematic wound she had. Today the place is as busy as ever with people visiting it from all over the world.
