Welcome to our

May Show

The May exhibition sees our artists turn to every medium from wood carving to wax pastel and everything in between to express themselves in response to these magical

’’

islands. Their winter visits afford the

opportunity to see the beaches deserted, the

headlands bereft of a soul. Stripped bare, the winter landscape can be wild and captivating with storms to exhilarate and excite. A day

later may bring golden sunlight and a

becalmed sea, with waves that ripple onto the shore with a gentle shush. This collection covers the many moods of the Isles of Scilly for you to savour, to enjoy, to collect.

How delighted I am to once again be

invited to paint these beautiful islands as

the deserted white beaches of Tresco are

’’

an endless source of inspiration to me.

I am always drawn to walk along the

beaches with their constantly changing

views, the sound of the waves, and the cry

of the gulls. Each time is different

depending upon the state of the tide, the

weather, time of day and season. All

these things provide a changing palette and the pure clean air magnifies the

colours revealing nature in all its glory.

The weather has not been too bad of late

– not many storms so a lack of driftwood,

although I have been able to salvage

some interesting pieces from coves

’’

around the coast and I am very grateful to

friends who sometimes drop me the occasional piece. Or maybe as I’m about

to reach 70 I’m just not getting up early

enough! The two freestanding curlews in

this exhibition have been mounted on

oak timbers from the Lifeboat Slip in St. Ives and they show on their edges, the wear and tear of the saltwater and storms from over the years.

The focus for this series of paintings

are the classic Scilly’s sweeping sands,

edged by banks of sea grasses and

pine trees. The sea for me will

always present a fascinating

challenge. The transparent nature of

quiet tides moving gently over the

elusive golden sands which demand so much of paint and which I have

tried to capture.

Thank you to those who bought my

paintings last Summer. Another year

of looking for inspiration as I walk the

’’

islands. Often it is not the big picture

but the little things that catch my eye,

the colour of surf rising and falling

against the rocks at Hell Bay, clumps

of sea pinks or everyday objects such

as sea shells, fresh fish or paint

peeling from boats. All of these are

part of my painting mix. Wishing you all a visual treat on the Isles of Scilly this year.

The weather can change so quickly and thus changes the view. This is so exciting for any artist who is trying to capture the light and emotion of the landscape. The paintings for this collection are of some of my favourite views and have a personal memory for me, from when I first visited in the late 1990's to last year when I stayed on Bryher. Over the years I feel my work has evolved but the things that drew me to painting the landscape is still there and continues to drive me on today, the light, colour, and texture of the landscape are forever my inspiration.

We departed Lands End on a gloriously

sunny, clear day hence our flight to

Tresco was breathtaking. These annual sojourns are a complete joy for myself

’’

and my son. An opportunity to relax

and breathe in salty sea air. I took

plenty of photos as we sauntered

around the island, discovering new

places and revisiting old favourites.

This year I've chosen to paint in oils; it's

been really inspiring to use a different medium. My new collection of work aims to capture the solitude, peace and unique beauty of Tresco.

An exhilarating week in March dominated by the wind, pushing and

pulling, tearing at my sketches as I

attempt to shelter from the icy blasts.

’’

Rain ladened clouds unleash their

contents, splattering my drawings and

creating their own unique watery

marks. Then a sudden moment of

calm as the clouds break revealing a

rich blue sky, sunshine lights up the

landscape with vibrant colour,

aquamarine seas and shimmering beaches. Tresco never ceases to surprise, every season in a day!
