Welcome

galleryTRESCO

“Welcome to our first online show, and thank you for taking the time to find us here. More than ever this exhibition is a fine display of the diversity of work and styles we have to offer at Gallery Tresco. The Isles of Scilly act as a catalyst for creativity, reflecting the sheer thrill of a windblown headland or the simple joy a sun-kissed bay. I join with the artists in their desire to share the pleasure of these tiny islands with you. Anna Parkes, manager

The Artists

Richard Tuff I love the untamed wildness of the landscape, juxtaposed with almost Caribbean like coastal stretches of startling white sands and clear turquoise waters that seem unique to this corner of the Cornish coast. Each painting is drawn out first and layers of paint added resulting in a tapestry of colours through which I hope to convey the feeling and sense of beauty of the Scillies.

Robert Pittam Ever since I was a child on holiday in Cornwall, the sea has been an irresistible, magnetic influence on my life. I have a vivid memory of playing with a toy truck in the sand and noticing that the intense shadow cast by the brilliant sunlight was unlike anything I'd seen at home. Something about what, I much later realised, was the famous 'Cornish Light' made me feel subtly 'different' - more alive even. And where else in Britain do sea and sunlight collide in a more intoxicating, dreamlike way than the Isles of Scilly? Light and shadow remain my enduring artistic fascination particularly the way it can evoke calm and stillness - and you might also see the ever present influence of the sea in my choice of subject matter.

Amanda Hoskin The paintings I have done for this collection are some of my favourite views of the Scillies. Memories of past holidays spent as a family with my daughter Hannah when she was six or seven years old, days that were so precious now she is nearly 16. In this collection I wanted to revisit those times. I feel this is often what the islands symbolise for many people. Special memories with loved ones, where time stands still for a while - cut off from the hustle and bustle of life, a place to stop, rest, watch and think. For me it is a truly magical place and I hope very much that I have achieved that feeling in my paintings. They are special to me and I hope that will come through to the viewer.

Teresa Pemberton Winter storms pounding, wild winds combined with red sunsets in patchwork skies; spring and summer flowers such as agapanthus and foxgloves lingering and hiding in piled-up sands. Grey skies darkening the sea, evening walks on rainy evenings, poppies blowing in the breeze; deserted beaches beckoning. Whatever the season, there are unexpected colours in the sea and sky, walks in the long grasses and on sandy stretches – always variety in the landscape on different days. To visit Tresco in the calm serenity of high summer one could not imagine the winter battles of nature at its most passionate; all this is what I try to capture!

Stephen Morris I am delighted to have been invited to show my work for this exhibition. All of these five pieces are from our islands including two paintings worked entirely from life in the gardens on Tresco. I think they show the intensity of colour that we experience from the light here. In my opinion we have both the advantages of the Cornish light together with the wide open skies that I used to paint in East Anglia. I am also fascinated by the detail in flora and nature in general, the patterns in nature intrigue me and I spend hours studying the colours and textures in their changing natural environment. I have also included one of my beach studies to show a different aspect of my work, again worked entirely from life just yards from my front door!

Victoria Hilliard I have developed my kiln fired ceramic relief pictures over the past 30 years. In that time I have moved around England and exhibited internationally but always came back to my native Cornwall. I love two dimensional painting and drawing but always seem to get pulled into working with clay and the 3D relief image, I am not quite sure why. My clay work, sculptural and relief, is usually studying form, detail, pattern and tone. Clay to me is a medium I use to illustrate my ideas, whatever moves me. The ideas are informed by a cocktail of my horticultural experience on Scilly and in Cornwall.
