“These islands seem to create a bond, a certain connection for most visitors, but none more so than our artists. For them there is a joyful return to the challenge. A renewed dance: an elusive chase to pin down their very own Scilly. This show is evidence to each; their success and pleasure. View life on Scilly through the artists’ eyes and sense the magic of colours blended, marks made, a composition and story unfolding. A vision shared for all to enjoy.” Anna Parkes, manager

The Artists
Maggie Matthews The colours of Tresco seem to fill your mind, from the crystal clear turquoise waters to the vivid pink sunsets. I’m always totally absorbed by the fast changing light and weather conditions along Tresco’s coastline. These pastel drawings were created “en plein air” focusing on my favourite stretches of beach. Working outside intuitively choosing vivid colours and weaving them quickly onto the page. My choice of bold and vibrant colour allows me to express the atmosphere of these places I know so well.
Nicola Hancox This year’s collection takes me back to days spent walking along Tresco’s beautiful beaches, where time stands still and I can be alone with my thoughts. I watch the rise and fall of the tide, as the crystal clear water, with soothing sounds, gently laps over the sand, then with the receding rhythm, draws back, pulling tiny shells and pebbles, leaving smooth wet sand, which reflects all the colours of the sky. A shimmer of light plays over the water, buoys bobbing, sea birds running in and out, seaweed tangles and distant views over the islands. Heaven. I hope these paintings bring back memories of your special times spent on Tresco.
Geoffrey Bickley This last 12 months has been a busy time, I was delighted to be short listed for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year, from entries worldwide. The cormorants are a popular bird especially on the islands. They can often be spotted on isolated rocks drying their wings, I find them full of character and I like to exploit their lazy-looking stance. I’ve seen quite a few curlews this year so have included these in this exhibition along with other favourites and some new carvings.
Gary Long I travelled over to Tresco from Penzance on one of the last helicopter flights savouring the feeling of leaving the bustle of the mainland behind arriving on the tranquil island. My time was spent making sketches of familiar locations and also looking for new ones. The weather plays a very important part in the way that a place is portrayed. My preference is the more dramatic landscape and the mood that is created when conditions change. As always the experience was memorable.
Tom Rickman I would think that over the years of coming to paint on Tresco that it would be possible to run out of inspiration and ideas from such a small landmass. But this place has a most canny way of re-inventing itself and showing me its many facets. The time I spend here in the winter is quite special. The island is left as if to sleep and I wander around its empty spaces within its own dream quite alone within the beauty and my thoughts.
Sophie Harding Our visit to Tresco in January was wonderful as my son is now old enough to walk for significant distances which meant that we enjoyed plenty of windy, wintry walks along as many beaches as we could collecting sea glass as we went. I filled a whole sketchbook with drawings so that on my return I had a large collection of sketches to work from for my new paintings. My aim, as usual is to capture the beauty, simplicity and charm of the island. Tresco is one of my favourite places to be and I'm so lucky to have this opportunity to visit every year.
