Letter from ROSEANNE The prospect of springtime creates a feeling of excitement and possibility completely unique to any other season. I visited the “Paris in Spring” flower show yesterday and those familiar urges to plant and create beauty came right to the surface!

We seem to have a universal desire to go through rituals of renewal at this time of year and it is such a welcome shift after a particularly cold and snowy winter!

At The Body Serene, we have already begun our focus on the “freshening” of our space and offerings. We have found new treasures for our boutique so our customers will have delightful and affordable accessories and notions to enhance their spring look.

Each of our service teams have been spending time on education to expand their talents and knowledge base to best serve our community and we have decorated the spa so that everyone who walks through our doors is reminded of the lovely seasons ahead!

We are also thrilled to announce the launch of our new Body Serene Website! This updated version is designed to be easy and fun to connect with all things Body Serene! Check it out and tell us what you think!

ith the spring season arriving, we have asked Dr. Jennifer Dupré to explain the in’s and out’s of sunscreen and how to protect your skin this season: SM: Welcome back Jennifer. Our clients have really enjoyed reading about options to keep their skin healthy and youthful in appearance?

JD: T hank you for inviting me back Roseanne. It is always a pleasure to talk with you..

SM: With the summer months quickly approaching, I would like to focus on ways to protect your skin from sun damage and reverse some of the changes that have already occurred?

JD: All of us are going to have sun exposure as the weather gets warmer, this is to be expected. The goal of sun exposure is to prevent sun damage – this includes sunburn, signs of aging (ie. wrinkles and changes in pigmentation) and skin cancer.

SM: What are some ways that our clients can prevent skin damage?

JD: T his is a good question. There are a number of effective ways to prevent sunburn:

1. S tay out of the sun during peak hours when the rays are strongest – 10 AM to 4 PM. It is important to understand that you can still get a sunburn on cloudy days because the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds and reflect off the sand.

2. S eek shade during periods of prolonged sun exposure. This includes using an umbrella.

3. W ear appropriate clothing outside. This includes a wide brimmed hat made of tightly woven material, such as canvas, to protect the face, ears and back of neck.

4. U se sunglasses that provide 100% UV ray protection.

This can reduce your risk of cataracts.

SM: How does sunscreen work?

JD: S unscreen protects the skin by reflecting or absorbing the UV radiation emitted from the sun. The Sun Protection Factor, SPF, is an indicator of how much protection the sunscreen offers against UVB (sunburn) rays. Sunscreen does expire.

Many companies put the expiration date on the bottle. If there is no expiration date then you should throw it away after three years. .SM: What are some basic rules of applying sunscreen?

JD: 1. P urchase only broad-spectrum sunscreen. It should protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Use SPF 30 or greater on exposed skin.

3. A pply at least two tablespoons of sunscreen to cover an adult’s arms, legs, neck and face.

4. Reapply every two to three hours.

5. Reapply after sweating, drying off with a towel or swimming.

6. Protect lips with a lip balm with a SPF over 30.

.SM: Are sunless tanning products safe?

JD: S unless tanning lotions and sprays are safe. Most provide a natural appearing tan by temporarily staining the skin and making it darker. Effects last less than one week and then need to be reapplied. Tanning pills are banned in the United States.

SM: Are tanning beds safe?

JD: T anning beds use a mixture of UV rays. They can cause a sunburn and have been linked to an increased risk of melanoma. They should not be used by anyone under the age of 18.

SM: What are some of the visible signs of skin damage cause by sun exposure?

JD: S un damage can cause wide areas of increased pigmentation on the face, neck, chest and other areas. Sunspots are

pigmented lesions, also known as age spots. Signs of aging, such as wrinkles, are also the results of sun exposure.

SM: Are there ways to reverse the damage caused by the sun?

JD: Y es. There are several different methods, that used in combination can successfully reverse some of the signs of sun damage.

1. P hotorejuvenation – This intense pulsed light system removes pigmentation, sun spots and superficial blood vessels. Our medical office and highly trained skin care team uses specialized handpieces that emits pulses of light into the skin. The light is then absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and veins and they fade within 2 weeks. A few visits will be necessary to treat the sunspots and vessels. There is little to no downtime and you can return to work after the treatment.

2. C hemical Peels – Chemical peels are composed of different acid strengths designed to produce various degrees of exfoliation based on each person’s individual needs. A peel can be applied in about 20 minutes. Results include increased skin glow and radiance, tightening of the skin, and improved skin color, clarity and texture. They are well tolerated with minimal irritation. The stronger peels will cause deeper exfoliation and sloughing of the skin over several days. Peels are commonly alternated with the photorejuvenation process.

3. S kin Lightening Systems – Sun exposure causes hyperpigmentation. This is the results of excess melanin in the outer and middle layers of the skin causing it to appear uneven and dull. This includes melasma. Hydroquinone products prevent the overproduction of melanin from occurring and lightens age spots of the skin. They also prevent new age spots from occurring. These products can only be provided by a physician.

Dr. Jennifer Dupré, is the founder of the Welcare Center and serves as its chief physician.

Dr. Dupré graduated magna cum laude from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. After earning her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Dupré completed a rotating internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY, and a residency in family medicine at the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network in Allentown.

Dr. Dupré and her husband, Jayson, an internist at the Welcare Center, reside in Skippack with their four daughters and their yellow Labrador retriever, Maggie.

SPOTLIGHT Sharon Gulick We are thrilled to have welcomed Sharon back to The Body Serene after she left us years ago to move to Florida! She has been back with us for a year and has brought her professionalism and perfectionism to our team along with her 15 years of experience in skin and nail care.

In addition to being a skilled therapist, Sharon is an extremely active mother and grandmother who takes her greatest joy playing baseball and kickball with her kids!

She also loves reading and doing research on the computer and has recently reunited with a friend after forty years!

When asked about her favorite part of her work she says, “I love the customers and the people that I work with. I love to treat people the way I want to be treated.” We love her sparkling eyes and warm smile. You can see why Florida’s loss was our gain!

Christine Klementisz Chrissy also worked at Body Serene many years ago and has returned after she and her husband had three wonderful children! She brings 19 years of experience in the skin and nail industry and is passionate about taking care of our customers’ needs.

In her precious spare time, Chrissy is an avid reader and because of her very busy home life, she considers the work she does at the spa her personal outlet.

“I love to meet new people and I like making people feel good!” Her bubbly personality and genuine interest in others and their needs, makes Chrissy fun to be around and wonderful asset to our team!
