The Texas Hill Country More than a state of mind...it’s a unique mindset Welcome to the heart of the Hill Country! Boerne is both literally and figuratively an entryway into one of Texas’ most beautiful regions, the Texas Hill Country. While just a couple of decades or so ago, Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee) could easily have been considered “forgotten”; today it is a town where technology and times past enjoy equal balance. Boerne is recognized across the United States as a desirable place to live. Listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the country’s fastest growing regions, the area’s rapid expansion has meant numerous new housing subdivisions as well as an influx of industry, business and tourism. Boerne strives to hold on to its warm, small-town origins. Oak trees still grow together in canopies above many city streets while a trip to the grocery store almost guarantees an encounter with friends and neighbors. The surrounding countryside is lush and arid, dramatic and pastoral. Streams and rivers soften the sharp-edged limestone

topography. Roosters and goats, still raised within city limits by a few old timers, may wander about under cell phone towers that have risen within the last few years. Established by a young group of Germans who considered themselves classical philosophers - or Free Thinkers - Boerne originally didn’t allow churches inside the city limits. Today, however, the town is home to numerous religious congregations. Also enormously important within the ranks of the city’s population is its volunteerism. Citizens selflessly donate countless hours not only to religious matters, but to social, educational, environmental, political and historical causes as well. The crown jewel of Boerne’s history is its quaint Main Street. Also called the Hill Country Mile, it is lined by many of the buildings that formed the vibrant core of the county’s “city life.” These structures, although admired by tourists, are still thought of as home by the town’s octogenarians. “That’s the house where I
grew up,” one might point out, or “there’s the hospital where I was born,” or “the dry goods store that sold us fabric for our dresses.” And it’s not only long-timers and newcomers who are drawn to Boerne’s old structures apparently. Ghosts, it seems, are drawn to the buildings as well. For example, the lovely, ornate Joseph Dienger building on Main Plaza has an officially certified otherworldly occupant believed to be the building’s original owner, Joseph Dienger himself. Whether it’s shopping, visiting the area’s beautiful caves, exploring the local nature center, enjoying historically authentic exhibits, birding, cycling, hunting or hiking, Boerne provides the ideal blend of the urban and the rural. Close on one hand is an international airport, the Alamo, the San Antonio Riverwalk, Seaworld of Texas, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the San Antonio Zoo and numerous concert and museum venues. Nearby on the other hand is the unique and sought-after beauty of the Texas Hill Country.

Boerne’s natural beauty preserved RIVER ROAD PARK Looking for a place to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer? Come to River Road Park, located just off Main Street in downtown Boerne. Residents and visitors alike come to the park to enjoy the many features this beautiful park has to offer. Feeding the many ducks that reside there that are beautiful, colorful and playful is one of the most popular activities at this beautiful park. There is also a winding walking trail where you can take a leisurely stroll or ride a bike or rollerblade. There are also clean picnic tables where you can enjoy a picnic or just relax and read a book. You may also see people of all ages fishing from the riverbanks and turtles that will occasionally pop their heads up out of the water. If you love being in a serene and peaceful place and enjoying what mother nature has to offer then visit River Road Park in Boerne. COUNTY PARKS Three county parks lie within just a few miles of Boerne’s central Main Street area. The Joshua Springs Park & Preserve is the first of the county’s large and beautiful nature areas and a place where walkers and hikers can enjoy an extensive trail system as a way to experience the Hill Country in a peaceful, up-close-and-personal
way. Birders are provided with many opportunities for sightings, including areas that are specifically dedicated to chimney swifts and bluebirds, while fishermen are welcome at the park’s ponds and waterways. The most developed of the county’s three parks, Joshua Springs offers pavilion and playground facilities, among many other amenities. Just around the bend from Comfort, the James Kiehl River Bend is a 25-acre area of exceptional beauty and peace dedicated to a local veteran who died in Iraq. Almost 2,000 feet of riverfront land allow visitors swimming, paddling and fishing access to the exceptional beauty of the Hill Country’s celebrated Guadalupe River. Another lovely and quiet spot is the Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area - more than 100 more acres of rolling countryside adjoining the Guadalupe. Left largely undeveloped, three miles of paths trace the river’s banks, while wildlife observation blinds allow visitors to stop and observe the natural world around them. GUADALUPE RIVER STATE PARK East of Boerne, just past the quaint hamlet of Bergheim, is the Guadalupe River State Park. Horse lovers have access to several miles of an equestrian trail system, and campers can pitch their tents on any of the multiple
camping sites. Miles of water access allows enthusiasts to fish, paddle, swim and float, while the Children’s Discovery Center gives children hands-on access to exhibits, themed discovery boxes and a backpack of tools that make exploring the park fun. CIBOLO NATURE CENTER & FARM One of Boerne’s true natural gems, the Cibolo Nature Center was born of the dreams of local citizens who wished to see natural habitat not only restored, but preserved in perpetuity. Since the 1980s, the CNC has continued to develop and grow both in size and in learning opportunities, celebrating the Hill Country land and natural resources as an important legacy. With conservation as its primary focus, the CNC’s library and exhibits allow for learning, while its many trails let visitors explore a variety of ecosystems within a small area through which a beautiful, cypress-bordered stretch of the Cibolo Creek runs. One of Boerne’s most historic and beautiful structures, the Herff farmhouse and its surrounding property, was purchased recently as an extension of the Cibolo Nature Center. Something of a neighborhood gathering place, the Herff Farm land is the location of a community garden, a weekly farmers market and other special events. Gateway to the Texas Hill Country 9
Protecting heritage, conserving nature The Cibolo Nature Center & Farm in Boerne is located on 162 acres of natural lands at Boerne City Park off Highway 46 just west of the Kendall County Fairgrounds. The Cibolo Nature Center’s mission is conservation of natural resources through education and stewardship. In 1988, Carolyn Chipman Evans, her husband, Brent Evans, and a handful of friends dreamed of protecting a segment of the precious Cibolo Creek in Boerne and the land around it as a wildlife preserve where families could enjoy and appreciate nature. Carolyn approached the City of Boerne to urge the restoration of disappearing marshland and the creation of nature trails on 100 acres of the existing Boerne City Park adjacent to the creek. The city’s cooperation, and Carolyn’s enthusiasm, brought a rebirth to the land and a renaissance of public concern for conservation of Boerne’s natural
resources. Open to the public since Earth Day 1990, the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm today is a prime example of community caring. Thanks to thousands of volunteers’ dedicated work, the community is preserving its natural heritage for future generations. Across Cibolo Creek from the nature center is the Herff Farm. The 62-acre green space includes a farmhouse, barn and other structures built by one of the area’s original German immigrant families. In December 2009, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house also figured prominently in the early settlement of Boerne, was confiscated during the Civil War for a Confederate Prisoner of War camp and served as the site of one of the last Native American-settler conflicts. It was the summer home of Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig Herff, a medical pioneer in San Antonio and the
THE FARMERS MARKET AT THE CIBOLO The mission of The Farmers Market at the Cibolo is to provide area residents the opportunity to buy Hill Country grown and produced products and support local farmers and specialty vendors. If it’s homemade, handmade or fresh and tasty, you can get it at the Farmers Market at the Cibolo. Held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain or shine) through mid-December, the Farmers Market at the Cibolo also offers educational and cultural events and a place to visit with friends and neighbors. There is always something fun happening at the Market! Admission is free to the Farmers Market at the Herff Farm at the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm. great-great-grandfather of Carolyn Chipman Evans, the Cibolo Nature Center’s founding director. Its location at the confluence of Cibolo and Menger creeks makes it a key habitat area within the larger Cibolo Conservation Corridor. In 2007, the Friends of the Cibolo Wilderness, with help from supporters and foundations across Texas, purchased the farm in order to preserve its resources for current and future generations. As significant as the act of preservation has been, the people behind the Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm want to kick it up a notch. The farm will be an outdoor classroom for teaching the living skills we have nearly lost in little more than a generation, such as gardening, composting, beekeeping and rainwater harvesting. These and other simple skills for sustainable living will provide our community with practical ways to live in harmony with nature. Eventually, the Herff Farm will be part of Boerne’s public trail system, where families can take a walk through the farm and hike the nature trails over the creek and through the Cibolo Nature Center. For over 25 years, the Cibolo Nature Center has led the way in conservation education in our greater Central Texas neighborhood. With the addition of Herff Farm, these notable efforts will expand significantly as the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm becomes a thriving, new model of sustainable living for farming, gardening, beekeeping and water catchment, all while providing wide-open spaces to simply enjoy being outdoors. While you’re here, visit the old barn and historic homestead overlooking 60 acres of wild, open lands, marked trails and wildlife habitats. FUN AND FREE CLASSES Children’s and family educational activities are free or for a small donation. Adults can learn at free Saturday workshops and gardening classes. Take a guided trail hike to explore lands where cowboys, Indians, Texas Rangers and ranchers once roamed. Put your toes in the water during outdoor learning adventures on the banks of Cibolo Creek. breweries and more - some with outside seating available, so you can continue to enjoy our beautiful Hill Country weather. NATURAL BEAUTY Boerne has great options for outdoor living! Enjoy our extensive trail system along Cibolo Creek, including River Road Park, where you can cast a line, bring a picnic, ride a bike and enjoy your day. Not far from the Hill Country Mile is the Old No. 9 Trail that follows the historic alignment of the old San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad route that brought early visitors from San Antonio to Boerne. On both trails you will find new treats to delight the eye! Several temporary sculptures have been installed as part of the Boerne Art al Fresco Public Art Competition. Be sure to download a Public Art Walking tour brochure at artalfresco.org. You can also download an audio
walking tour via the free Otocast app. Don’t forget to take a selfie with your favorite sculpture and share it with us at on Facebook at Boerne Art al Fresco! RIVER SOUTH ARTS DISTRICT South of the Cibolo is where you will find a quieter Boerne, with more great places to shop, eat and relax. Art and design shops, galleries, restaurants, lodging, and some of the city’s most stunning historic buildings can be found including St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, an iconic limestone structure built high on a hill overlooking the city. The church was modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730) with twin towers that rise 65 feet in the air. Next door, The Phillip Manor has seen many uses over the last 152 years, and now has been restored into a boutique hotel, pub and event center. Across the
street, the two-story triple column structure with arched windows is the Victorian style Carstanjen House (also called The Mansion House). Nearby is the famous Kronkosky Tower, on the grounds of the Benedictine Ministries offering the best view in Boerne, and Veterans Park.

Caves, creeks and cows Beyond the shops and bustle of historic downtown, Boerne’s host of natural features are a must see for any visitor. From unbelievable living caves to beloved natural preserves, nature enthusiasts and thrill seekers will find something to suit their fancy. From day outings to camping trips, the wonders of the Texas Hill Country will be memory-making for any family. Ever since the publication of the famous GermanAmerican novel, The Hermit of the Cavern, the caves of the Texas Hill Country have been a beacon to the stalwart adventurer and casual spelunker alike. Cascade Caverns first opened its doors in the early 1930s, and Cave-Without-a-Name followed just a few years later in 1939. These natural wonders are made possible by Boerne’s unique location on a massive deposit of calcium carbonate – or limestone. Over millions of years, underground rivers and groundwater eroded the limestone, leaving behind the massive caverns and breathtaking formations that exist today. The geological process can still be seen, as both of these caves are “living” and water continues to erode and deposit formations at a glacial pace. At Cascade Caverns, just off I-10, visitors can wander through the winding corridors, looking for the unique ™

Cascade Caverns Salamander that makes its home in the lake. For those seeking an extra thrill, Adventure Tours take spelunkers down into the mud for an unprecedented, up-close look at the cavern system. Set amid the turning backroads of the Hill Country, a scenic drive north of town takes wanderers to Cave Without A Name. Known as “the Little Carlsbad,” Cave Without A Name boasts a near endless collection of breathtaking formations, as well as several large, open caverns where visitors can experience the renowned acoustics at frequent concerts. Camping facilities are available at both locations. Boerne’s location just north of the Balcones Fault also makes it a unique spot for ecotourism. Blackland prairies meet oak forests, serving up a spectacular combination of flora and fauna. The best place to experience all of Boerne’s ecosystems is the renown Cibolo Creek Nature Center. Sporting approximately three miles of trails, visitors can wander through wetlands, prairies, and forests within just a few minutes’ time. The banks of the Cibolo Creek offer a cool place to sit and rest beneath feathery cypress trees which guard the creek and its inhabitants from the summer sun. Across the creek lies historic Herff Farm which offers a glimpse of German pioneer life, preserved within the modern world. Purchased before the Civil War, Herff Farm is one of the first 10 homes in Boerne. A Confederate POW camp, it survived Indian raids, acting as an early medical practice for locals in need. Though Indians and soldiers can no longer be seen there, it now houses Boerne’s weekly farmers market, bringing together produce, baked goods, and other stalls for a must-visit small-town walkthrough. A short drive from Main Street is Boerne Lake, the town’s primary water source as well as the locals’ favorite place for an afternoon dip or lazy fishing. Here visitors can rent kayaks and paddleboards, and take in the vista of limestone bluffs and oak-covered hills, moments from town, but in the peace of the countryside.

BOERNE BREWERY Hiding away in what used to be a pasture on Boerne’s northside, the Boerne Brewery is a closed container manufacturing company resulting from years of effort on the part of the company’s three entrepreneurial owners. It’s original inspiration – a craft beer named Old Peculiar – has resulted in brews whimsically named Denim-Hosen, Willy’s ESB (Extra Special Bitter), Hopstrasse, Old Courthouse Ale, and a seasonal that includes Oompah Alt. Not only does the Boerne Brewery host tastings, but tours are available as well. 9 Hill View Lane, Boerne, TX 78006 830.331.8798 www.boernebrewery.com

Good Eats: Local BBQ will leave you drooling for more KLEIN SMOKEHAUS
SMOKEY MO’S
TEXAS MEAT COMPANY
20 FALL/WINTER 2017
If there’s one thing Texas knows, it’s brisket, and the good town of Boerne is no exception! Whether you’re looking for classic barbecue served on parchment paper with a roll of paper towels or classic cuts with a fusion twist, Boerne has got your sausage, ribs and everything in between. KLEIN SMOKEHAUS Their story began on July 4, 1950, when the Waldeck Family purchased the building at 342 N. Main Street and opened a family grocery store. Gavin Waldeck and his sister Donna went to school right across the street. The butcher’s counter offered fresh beef and pork grown and harvested from neighboring farms, so you couldn’t ask for fresher, higher quality meat. Since the Waldecks were already butchering domestic meats, hunters in the area brought their deer to the store for processing, and this became one of the core elements of the business that stays strong today. Their shelves are stocked with pickled vegetables and relishes, salsas, marinades and rubs. Whether it’s succulent sliced brisket in sweet, tangy sauce, the savory chopped beef, or tender pulled pork, the hot sandwiches are a huge hit with tourists and locals alike. All of their barbecue products – brisket, sausage, smoked turkey, chopped beef and pulled pork – are available by the pound; add some potato salad, broccoli slaw or beans. Their cold smoked, air dried sausage is the perfect example of German tradition just like Opa used to make – the taste is pure Texas German. They’ve been on Main Street for over six decades, so stop on in, swap a story or two, and enjoy the taste of Hill Country tradition! For more information, go to kleinsmokehaus. com or call 830-249-8063 TEXAS MEAT COMPANY If the pink pig on the sign out front doesn’t tip you off that you’re getting ready for some good eating, maybe it’s the smell of smoke as you walk through the door or the country music
pumping through the speakers overhead. Texas Meat Company is new to Boerne’s Main Street, but one bite and you’ll know that TMC is here to stay. Whether you want a classic three-meat plate with sides or something different, like the Kahula-styled pulled pork, brisket nachos, chicken fried oysters or twice baked potato stuffed with brisket and all the fixings; Texas Meat Company can fix you up. Try the brisket quesadilla or chopped brisket tacos. For more information, visit www. txmeatco.com or call 830-3311116. FRITZE’S BBQ What’s better than a local, family-owned barbecue joint? A really tasty local, family-owned barbecue joint! Fritze’s fits the bill with a simple menu featuring onepound baked potatoes stuffed with chopped beef or pulled pork, sliced brisket, turkey or pulled pork
sandwiches and classic two-meat plates with all the fixings. Families can take part in the family dinners feeding four to six or six to eight people, while tucking into desserts like apple pie, pecan pie, brownies and peach cobbler. Are you drooling? So are we. For more information, visit www. fritzesbbq.com/ or call 830-3319903. SMOKEY MO’S A regional favorite hailing from Austin originally, Smokey Mo’s features all the great barbecue classics: fantastic slow-smoked brisket so tender it falls off your fork (or fingers), sausage and smoked chicken that even the pickiest eater will love. Sides include creamed corn, potato salad, beans and green beans. Whether you want pounds of meat to go or even a hamburger, Frito pie or chopped barbecue sandwiches, there’s something for everyone at
Smokey Mo’s. Favorites include the chopped baker and baby back ribs. Breakfast lovers, rejoice: Smokey Mo’s offers breakfast, including beef, sausage and turkey wraps. For more information, visit www. smokeymosbbq.com or call 830331-2633. RIVERSIDE MARKET For those who crave rustic authenticity, Riverside Market offers one of the most elemental, no-frills barbecue experiences in Boerne. Part filling station, part convenience store, and part restaurant, some of Riverside Market’s barbeque gurus have been smoking and serving their sweetly smoked and peppered meat behind the same counter for decades. An eatery that earns great reviews across the board, Riverside Market is located at the corner of Boerne’s Main St. and River Road. 491 S Main St, 830-249-2546

Trucking It: Food Trucks offer fun escape from normal dining As the days heat up and nights lengthen, what’s better than sitting under some shade with a cool drink watching the kids play on inflatable bouncy structures? Why, having a plethora of dining options to choose from, of course! Boerne offers two different food truck parks that are perfect for a family escape or date night, with dining options ranging from pizza and burgers to donuts and snoballs.
RANDOM BEER GARDEN Located right by Boerne Lake, Random Beer Garden is the perfect post-swim hangout or location for a lazy weekend afternoon. With a large assortment of beer on tap and several food trucks hanging out, Random is a great informal escape for locals or travelers alike. Live music is a staple Friday through Sunday nights, and pets on leashes are more than welcome to come along and wag their tails to the beat. Chef Bully’s Frankfood Trailer, winner of Spike TV’s Frankenfood Show, offers an eclectic menu of fusion foods from Far East to Deep South and everywhere in between. La Mina is another popular food truck that parks at Random Beer Garden on weekends, featuring tacos and burgers with the “real taste of Mexico.” With La Mina, diners can sample treats like papa asada con carne and tacos de chicharron, along with sky-high gourmet burgers. Want something light? Try Get Fried, a gourmet French Fry truck based from Buffalo, New York with more than 20 types of fries and dipping sauces or toppings. Even Puerto Rican cuisine makes an appearance, with the aptly-named Puerto Rican Grub truck. Random Beer Garden is open Thursday through Sunday from lunch until closing time. For more information, call 210-288-0467. POINT PARK AND EATS Down in Leon Springs, just a quick 10 minutes from Boerne, Point Park and Eats is one of the first food truck parks to come to San Antonio. Located in a shady reservoir of oak trees, the bar is housed inside a true Texas weather-worn 1940s cottage. Colorful painted tables scatter under the trees for outside dining, while kids can play on the playground set or basketball court. The North Shore Tiki Hut is a permanent fixture, offering shaved ice for warm days and warmer nights, and there’s air conditioning and indoor or covered patio seating for anyone wanting a cooler atmosphere. There’s even free wi-fi for the tech-lovers out there. Staple trucks include Slider Provider, a coveted hamburger truck in San Antonio, along with Pho U Vietnamese Cuisine and Art of the Donut. Caliente Grill and Bad to the Bone BBQ are two more frequent trucks, while everything else is a wild card: one never knows who will show up, which is half the fun! Live music happens ev-
ery Friday and Saturday night, while Sunday mornings often feature a jazz brunch and every second Sunday features open-mic and picker’s circle. Some mornings there’s even yoga at Point Park and Eats, courtesy of local studio In Balance. For more information, visit http://www.parkatthepoint.com or call 210-251-3380. THE ROUNDUP Disproving the adage, “location, location, location,” The Roundup is located on the crest of a hill between the up-and-coming hamlet of Bergheim and the stillsleepy intersection of Kendalia. A family entertainment venue, The Roundup is a spot where kids can enjoy the playground while their parents enjoy any of the 25 beer options on tap. Wine and food trucks form part of the hopping action, along with a roster of C&W names such as Sundance Head and David Lee Garza. A stone’s throw from the beautiful Guadalupe River at 31 FM 3351 N, The Roundup has quickly made itself a favorite stopping place for tubers and bikers alike. (830) 428-3231 www.therounduptx.com THE TASTE OF BOERNE The Taste of Boerne is one of the few venues that’s suitable for both loafers and athletes alike. An open-air bar features an array of beer for those who choose to lounge, while sand volleyball and sand Zumba are there to keep more restless enthusiasts occupied. Serving sandwich, hamburger and hot dog staples, The Taste of Boerne is said to be “the ultimate family fun park experience” because of its playground, karaoke and oak tree shade. This venue is located at 1022 River Road 830-331-2777 www.thetasteofboerne.com

SHOPPING You may weep with joy at the prospect of 150 stores to shop from, though your credit card may weep for other reasons. At Fredericksburg, anyone can find anything they’re looking for, from antiques to fine arts and jewelry. Das Peach Haus offers prize-winning preserves and
homemade desserts like peach cobbler and fresh ice cream. Located on a 60-acre farm, it’s delightful to stroll through the orchard nibbling on peach preserves and pick up some gift baskets for Christmas gifts. Pet lovers should pop by Dogologie, where humans can get their fur babies everything they need for their play and health. At the One Quilt Place, sewing enthusiasts can drool over patterns and cloth along with quilts for sale and a classroom for those who want to stay and learn how to sew their own. ATTRACTIONS Tired of shopping and eating? Don’t worry, there’s still plenty to do! Take a stroll through the local vineyards and sample some fine Hill Country wine at several wineries, including Santa Marie Cellars, Fat Ass Winery or Kuhlman Cellars. History buffs will love the Texas Rangers Heritage Center and the Pioneer Museum Complex. If you’re looking for a show, the Fredericksburg Theater Company and Rockbox Theater offer family-friendly and professional theater for reasonable prices. Into steel rather than singing? Try Street Dreams, where one can buy, sell and view classic beauties, street racers and muscle cars. For more information, visit www.visitfredericksburgtx.com.
