clean sweep, p.7 Letter from the editor: Why, hello. Long time no read. Because I’m sure that not everyone is as excited to begin the new school year as the the incoming freshmen, I can give the rest of you something to look forward to: The Outlet! Your beloved school newspaper has undergone a shocking transformation over the summer. Along with our new magazine format, each of this year’s bi-monthly issues will feature color! We know our freshmen issue isn’t in color, but please cut us some slack. Color printing is expensive, afterall, and this small magazine is just a trial run for the year. Each of our full issues will be 32 pages and jam-packed with Borgia news. This edition of The Outlet was put together in record time at the 2011 Outlet Staff Workshop on August 3 and 4. At the workshop, new members learned the very basics of journalism and design. Although not all members could attend, the staff got a great head start on the year. Look for our first full issue of the year in October, and, in the meantime, stay plugged in to The Outlet at borgianews.com! Connor Voss Editor in Chief

How to Succeed in High School... Without Really Trying!
Freshmen year is tough, but even through crazy class schedules, insane amounts of homework and the back of the lunch line, somehow the students of Borgia survived it. And now it’s your turn! To help you walk through the halls of high school with ease, here are some tips from older students who have been there and done that.

Cassandra Halsted (Washington Stingrays SwimTeam, Freshman)
Q- Is there anything that makes you enjoy swim team more than you already do? CH- Well our team likes to write little things like “eat my bubbles” with Sharpie on our arms and legs to sort of intimidate the opponents.
Q- Anything you want to share to get people to consider joining the Washington Swim Team?
CH- Yeah! Swim team is a whole lot of fun. Yes you may have an upsetting moment,
like losing a race by just one tenth of a second, but it really has been a great experience.
Clayton Voss (Jr. PGA Golf League, Freshman)
Q- What was your favorite part of your summer golf experience?
Clayton Voss- My favorite part
was the competition aspect. I am a really competitive person, and it is a lot of fun trying to win tournaments.
Q- Where did you go for summer golf?
CV- This year I stayed in state for most of my tournaments with few exceptions in Illinois. The farthest I traveled was Bolivar Missouri for the Missouri Jr Amateur.
Q- What was your best score over the summer?
CV- My best score in tourna-
ment play was 1 over 72. I was at even par going into the last hole, but I bogeyed it.
Q- Did the heat affect your golfing abilities?
CV- It didn’t affect my abilities as much as it did little things like sweaty hands.
Q- Since it was so hot did you
play as often as normal? CV- Since it was so hot I chose to play at times when it was cool such as early morning or before sunset.

Students Play Summer Sports Whether they were in the pool, on the court, or hitting the links, our students carried the dominance of Borgia athletics into their summer vacations.
Alivia Brinker (Rockwood Thunder Volleyball Club, Freshman)
Q- How have you kept up with your sport over the summer?
Alivia Brinker- I have been going to
early weight training in the morning with Borgia, got to play at the Licking Volleyball camp with Borgia, and had an amazing time at nationals in Georgia with my club team. I have also been helping with camps for both Borgia High and Borgia Grade.
Jacob Smith (Washignton Stingrays SwimTeam, Freshman)
Q- How did Washington’s swim team do this year?
Jacob Smith- We had
a great year. Went undefeated (4-0) in the regular season and then at conference our whole team placed 1st.
Allie Wilson (FC Lightning Soccer, Freshman)
Q- What is your best memory from playing summer soccer?
Allie Wilson- We played at the
Show-Me State Games on Jul. 23 and 24. We played hard in the heat for two days and made it to championships. We played hard but ended up losing. After the game our coaches, said that we were the hardest team they had play in 3 years. I had a great time and it was a great experience. Alexis Ruether (Rockwood Thunder Volleyball Club, Sophmore)
Q- How did your club team do this summer?
Alexis Ruether- We were planning on playing in tournaments through out the summer, but then injuries kept us from playing.
Q- And then for Borgia? Did you do
any fundraisers or anything for the team?
AR- No. We mostly held camps for
the younger kids interested in the sport.
Q- Did the Borgia team travel anywhere or do team bonding?
AR- We were able to go to Licking
Camp which is pretty much like one big tournament. This year it was held at the Lake of the Ozarks so we all went to dinner and were pretty much with each other two days straight. It helped everyone get closer.

Cody McWay Staff Writer During the early part of the summer, several Borgia baseball players enjoyed playing with the Post 218 American Legion teams. The Post 218 Legion has four teams, including freshmen through senior. Approximately 18 Borgia athletes played on the Post 218 teams. This summer, Spencer Juergens, freshman, played a knock-out season with the Post 218 Freshman Legion team. He was number 28, played third base, and in three games was a relief pitcher with great statistics. Juergens had a total of five strikeouts in nine innings of work, had an outstanding ERA of only 1.80, and only gave up seven hits to the opposing team

A Clean Start at Borgia n Maintainence Staff Works Year-Round Anastasia Ratcliff Outlet Staff Writer
I
Bob Owen takes a break to pose for a photo.
t’s the night before your gigantor English paper is due, and you have some how managed to forget your laptop at school. In a desperate attempt to save your assignment (and grade), you rush to Borgia High School and start frantically beating on the glass doors. Bam!BAM!BAAMM! Suddenly, you see a shadowy figure heading towards you. Bob Owens, a four-year maintence man, has heard your cry for help and has come to the rescue. The janitorial staff here at Borgia is top-noch and comprised of hard working, kind, and spirited individuals. They work tiredlessly to ensure that the enviroment at Borgia is a clean and pleasant one. Roman Schroeder, who has been at Borgia for nearly six years, can usually be seen all around campus, generally during the day time. The summer time is Schroeder’s
favorite time of the year because of the more convient work hours and quieter halls. Schroeder jokingly states that the worst part of the job is when “the students show up”. Owens also enjoys the peaceful hallways and generally prefers to work the night shift. He describes the Borgia staff as “absolutelly great” and, for the most part, he enjoys the students. Schroeder and Owens are two great members of the maintence staff here at Borgia. These two janitors, along with several others are at the heart of the Borgia community. They do a veriety of tasks: from filling toliet paper dispensers, to waxing the floor during the summer time, cleaning classrooms, and rescuing forgotten laptop owners. They are the concrete individuals who hold the Borgia family together.
The entire Outlet staff, along with the Borgia community, would like to offer our most sincere thank you to our outstanding maintence staff. All the hard work, long hours, and dedication you offer our school are truly appreciated. As maintenance men, these unsung heroes do more than just keep the Borgia campus looking beautiful-- they often help out students with the daily perils of high school. Roman Schroeder, right, stops to share one of his funniest Borgia memories.
“A couple years ago, my boss sent me out to rescue a kid who had gotten stuck in his car. You see, it had been a cold day, and when the kid had gotten into his car there was water on the seal of his door. On the drive to school, the water had turned to ice and frozen his door shut. By the time I got there, the kid had already managed to escape his car.” August 2011 7
