Reworking Pulitzer masterpieces They are some of our literary favorites: Richard Russo’s Empire Falls, John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, E. Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News. They are winners of the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, and this month (along with the other tomes on that illustrious list) they will serve as fodder for Pulitzer Remix, an online initiative sponsored by the Found Poetry Review journal as part of National Poetry Month.

Eighty-five poets from across the country are involved; each of them was assigned one Pulitzer-winning novel to work with during the month of April. They are tasked with posting one poem per day, its language scavenged from their assigned books. The result will be about 2500 “found poems,” described at pulitzerremix.com as “the literary equivalents of collages, where words, phrases and lines from existing texts are refashioned into new poems.”

According to Found Poetry Review editor and Pulitzer Remix organizer Jenni Baker, who discovered the genre in graduate school and wrote her first found poem “using words on a box of teeth whitening strips,” found poets typically start their explorations with a short section or passage. “They then black or white out lines of the text, leaving only single words and short phrases visible which form a poem when read consecutively down and across the pages. This type of writing is more constrained because you’re forced to work with the words as you en-

counter them on the page.”

Another, looser method is to simply make note of interesting words or phrases while reading and then rearrange those in a structured or experimental form.

“It might seem like a simple task, to pick and choose words from a given text, paste them together, and call it a poem,” says E. Kristin Anderson, a Westbrook native who currently lives in Austin and is participating in the project (she’s riffing on the 2011 winner, A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan). “But in order to create a poem, no matter your method, you have to say something.

There has to be a story there. And when you’re working with a limited palette — which is how I view found poetry — you have to find a new story within someone else’s text.”

The uninitiated may wonder whether this sort of creative pursuit transgresses copyright or intellectual property boundaries. But enthusiasts maintain that publishing found poetry falls under fair use standards: “a poet may make use of quotations from existing poetry, literary prose, and non-literary material, if these quotations are re-presented in poetic forms that add value through significant imaginative or intellectual transformation.”

“The biggest misconception about found poetry I hear a lot is that it’s plagiarism,” Baker says. “People don’t understand the process that goes into creating it — they think found poets open up a book, pull out a nice paragraph, add a few line breaks and call it their own poem.

They don’t understand that the best found poets excerpt just single words or short phrases and spend a significant amount of time reworking them into a new piece whose meaning differs from the original.”

Which, in turn, can lead to a greater understanding or appreciation for the original work, even — or especially — for Pulitzer-winning classics like To Kill A Mockingbird or American Pastoral.

“For me, the biggest joy in writing found poetry is that you get to approach a text in a new way,” Baker says. “Usually, we read because we have to (for school) or because we’re compelled forward by an interesting story.

Rarely do we stop and look at the way language is used or the way sentences are structured. Found poetry gives writers the chance to break open a text and delve beyond just the superficial storyline to the conventions and word choices it’s composed of. And it’s fun because you never know what you’re going to find! You might find a love poem in an astronomy textbook or a war commentary piece in Jane Austen.”

Three-time loser Let’s test your knowledge of useless information.

Can you name the only two people in modern times who’ve run for all the major offices in Maine — US representative, US senator, and governor — unsuccessfully?

I’m not talking about fringe candidates with write-in campaigns. I mean folks who qualified for the ballot, but couldn’t convince anybody they were qualified to hold high public positions.

Lots of pols have come close: Democrat JOe BreNNAN lost bids for both governor (twice) and senator, but failed to make our list because he won all his races for Congress.

Likewise, Democrat TOM ALLeN got nowhere trying to become a governor or senator, but easily won the 1st District congressional seat.

Republican JIM LONgLeY Jr. won one and lost one in his brief career in the House. He failed to follow in his father’s footsteps in his gubernatorial bid. But he missed the trifecta because he never ran for the Senate.

Democrat PAT McgOwAN got skunked in two tries for Congress and one for governor. Green Jonathan Carter lost a pair of gubernatorial races and one for the US House. Democrat Jean Hay Bright went dim in her congressional and senatorial tries. The GOP’s Rick Bennett failed to win races for both chambers of Congress. And Republican Bob Monks has lost enough times to rate an honorable mention, even though they were all bids for the US Senate.

But since 1962, when Maine was downsized to two congressional districts, my research (which is open to expansion and correction) indicates only two politicians have displayed the outsized incompetence necessary to lose races for all the top spots. They are: 1) Democrat eLIzABeTh MITcheLL, who lost a 1984 US Senate contest, a

1990 try for the 1st Congressional District and a 2010 fizzle for governor.

2) PLATO TruMAN, who, starting in 1970, ran at various times for all three offices as a Democrat, Republican and independent — sometimes as a liberal and others as a conservative — often using the slogan, “Two Great Names, One Great Man.” Now, there’s a third contender for this . . . well, “elite group” can’t be the right phrase for failures of this magnitude. How about the Rejection Seat? The Unfriend Hall of Fame?

Society of the Severely Skunked? The Houston Astros?

Whatever they’re called, by the end of 2014, they may have to welcome a new member. Because Bruce POLIquIN is planning to run for Congress.

I know, that’s not what I wrote last week. In that column, I said Poliquin, the former state treasurer, unsuccessful candidate for governor (2010), and US Senate loser (2012) was gearing up for another try at the Senate. His plan was to challenge GOP Senator Susan Collins in the primary, presenting himself as the conservative alternative to the sometimesmoderate incumbent. I based that assessment on conversations with a half-dozen people who’d discussed such a campaign with Poliquin or his close advisers.

Then, Democratic US Representative Mike Michaud of the state’s 2nd District began making behind-thescenes moves, indicating he’s serious about running for governor next year.

That would mean there’d be an open congressional seat just waiting for the right candidate to come along and snatch it up.

To date, Joshua Tardy, a lobbyist and former state House Republican floor leader, and nearly every Democrat not taking prescription medications for ego-deflation have begun making plans to fill the void that’ll

be created by Michaud’s likely move.

Spirited primaries can be expected on both sides, and there’s always the possibility of a Green or an independent joining the muddle. No one with more common sense than a pine cone would consider getting involved in that mess.

Enter Poliquin, stage right.

In the past few days, the already undistinguished ex-candidate has been telling potential supporters he’s likely to make a run for the congressional seat representing northern, western, and eastern Maine.

There’s only one problem — aside from Poliquin not being a very appealing candidate.

He doesn’t live in the 2nd District.

Poliquin resides in Georgetown, which is in the 1st District, and where he got in a little trouble last year when it was discovered he was getting an improper property-tax break on most of the land on his oceanfront peninsula.

In his biographical material, Poliquin mentions being born in Waterville, which used to be in the 2nd District, but has a tendency to go back and forth depending on political whimsy. But regardless of which district his birthplace is located in at the moment, Poliquin has lived down south for years and will have to reestablish his roots with xenophobic northerners.

To that end, he’ll no doubt be looking for some nice seaside land in Lewiston that’s eligible for the Tree Growth tax break. After that, it’s on with the campaign, although this time, if he puts in his usual anemic performance at the polls, he’ll still come away with a prize.

He’ll be the answer to a trivia question. ^

fPortland Press Herald is resuming active exploration of

the West End News last week broke the story that the

While the PPH site has said nothing of the sort yet, it’s worth wondering how such a change could affect the larger local news ecosystem. right now, a lot of the news you see on television and hear on the radio comes, at least initially, from newspapers. it’s a common national situation, most extensively documented in Baltimore in 2010 by the project for excellence in Journalism, a dc-based part of the pew research centers. the study found that “much of the ‘news’ people receive contains no original reporting. Fully eight out of ten stories studied simple repeated or repackaged previously published information. And of the stories that did contain new information nearly all, 95%, came from traditional media — most of them newspapers.” right now, most tV and radio stations subscribe to the Ap’s broadcast wire service, which, among other things, compiles and repackages print-media stories for on-air use. (this is what you hear when mpBn’s Morning Edition host, irwin Gratz, reads a few snippets, often including the phrase “the Portland Press Herald reports this morning...”) the paywall itself will likely not affect the broadcasters much. But they could be hit hard if the paywall’s debut is coupled with a change in the PPH’s membership in the Associated press. if the Press Herald keeps sending its stories to Ap, then tV and radio stations will keep getting that information for their existing cost. But since that would mean PPH stories would be available elsewhere for free, it would make more sense to kill the Ap connection. the broadcasters would be stuck either paying Ap for less, or shelling out for the PPH separately. f in OPeN-gOverNMeNT News, the group calling itself maine’s majority — a far more hyper-partisan organization than the public it claims to represent — last week launched a dangerous and hypocritical assault on government transparency, by way of a political attack on admittedly loony ex-maine treasurer Bruce poliquin. Seems poliquin asked for a state-compiled email list to expand the audience for his electronic missives after leaving office. mm executive director chris Korzen sent out an email claiming poliquin “abused” maine’s Freedom of Access Act, “to obtain (a) public list for personal use.”

But the FoAA has no other purpose than to give people access to public information they want. it doesn’t, and shouldn’t, consider their reasons for asking, or what they’ll do when they get the info.

Korzen’s release admits poliquin broke no laws. (though it is tacky and may have violated the terms of his massemail contract.) it went on to self-contradictingly say both that the email list (which had already been compiled for public purposes) is “publicly-owned” — and that its use by the public should therefore somehow be restricted.

When i pointed out to Korzen that trying to restrict what people do with public records once they’re out of official hands is a dangerous and slippery slope (think: governmentimposed restrictions on free expression), his response was almost immediate: “i really don’t care. this is my job.” in an extended email conversation (see the full correspondence at thephoenix.com/Abouttown), Korzen took harder and more sweeping swings at poliquin, at one point saying he “would love to see the law changed so we can prosecute people who do what poliquin did,” and in another message condemning him for having “used public information to advertise himself for business/political/personal purposes.” of course, Korzen had done exactly that too: he asked for public records (correspondence from poliquin about email lists), got the information, and then used it for his own purposes (sending out a political-attack announcement).

Given this latest instance of shrill knee-jerk partisanship, and compounded by a clear failure to understand the important concept of government transparency, it’s time to tell lawmakers something i never thought i would suggest: From now on, ignore maine’s majority. ^

Playing a gig with his acoustic-folk band the Squid Jiggers at Bull Feeney’s in Portland’s Old Port, it went down like this: “They sent us a note to the stage as we were going on break, and it said, ‘We’re here on our honeymoon and here’s a list of songs we like.’ They were all right in our wheelhouse, and we thought, ‘Great, we’ll get right to them when we get back on.’ But they got up to leave before we got up on stage.”

“So Troy [that’s the other Squid Jigger] says, ‘Let’s give them a CD.’ So I pick up the CD and say, ‘Hey, since you’re leaving, take this,’ and she takes it and then the guy comes by and he decks me.”

Draws blood even. Leaves a good-sized egg on Rowe’s head. “It was just some bad decision-making on his part,” Rowe says, still not quite ready to find the whole incident amusing (since, you know, it kind of hurt), “and I have no idea what was going through his head. It’s just screwed.”

When the cops tracked the guy down in Massachusetts (small wonder the guy was a Masshole), he said he felt threatened.

By a couple of guys playing Irish tunes and taking requests. Sounds legit.

Most likely he was feeling that weird sense of ownership that’s all too familiar to musicians playing in bars: In an ondemand world, many patrons (especially when they’ve got a few drinks on board) think an ability to play one cover translates to an ability to play any cover.

Or worse.

“In the American Idol age, with all these contests, I’ve seen an increase of people coming up to me and being like, ‘Hey, I can sing, let me play a song with you,’” says Jason Basiner, one half of the acoustic duo North of Nashville and formerly a regular haunt of Bull Feeney’s, performing as J. Biddy. “I think a lot of people think you can just forgo the ten thousand hours of practice and hard work, just because they can sing in the shower and think they have a good voice. There’s a much more comfortable nature when it comes to an audience member in a bar trying to dictate what the artists should be playing or how the night can be structured.”

Not that Basiner doesn’t take requests.

In fact, he’s kind of famous for it. When he was first getting started in Portland, he used to pass out a song list into the crowd with as many as a thousand songs printed on it and people could just order up what they wanted.

“I did that menu thing for a couple of years,” he says, “and finally I just didn’t want to do it anymore. I didn’t want to give control to the audience. I didn’t want to be a trained monkey up on stage. Like you’re the court jester.”

Basiner has come a long way, really.

First with This Way, and now with North of Nashville, he’s played up and down the East Coast and can fill nights with largely original material, mixing in just a few

Be patient musicians construct set lists and manage the flow of the evening and the feel of the room. often, they want to wait until the request is a good fit. offer an incentive the musicians aren’t doing this for charity; show them a little love (in the form of cash) and they’ll show you a bit (in the form of their skills).

Don’t Be that guy (or girl) requesting “Freebird” is best left to actual Skynyrd concerts, or at least Southern rock bands. come to think of it, you’re just being a dick. Stop.

Don’t hit other people in case we seriously have to say this, we’re saying it.

And if you think the musician sucks, suggest bands you’d rather hear to the bartender.

“But playing in bars you have to be open to requests,” he allows. “It’s just part of the thing.”

Man, can that thing get old, though.

The request every acoustic band gets most nowadays is for “Wagon Wheel,” by Old Crow Medicine Show (and now with a popular cover by Darius “Hootie” Rucker).

Everyone jokes that it’s the new “Freebird,” except people actually expect you to play it. Jose Ayerve has a great story about finishing up a gig as A Severe Joy, which is essentially a one-man electronic performance-art show, only to find “PLAY WAGON WHEEL” in big block letters (and circled) on the email list sign-up sheet he’d put out.

“I won’t do ‘Wagon Wheel,’” Rowe says. “I won’t even learn ‘Wagon Wheel.’

If they want ‘Freebird’ it better be printed on the back of a $50 bill, and the same goes for ‘Sweet Caroline.’ There’s a list of songs that I absolutely refuse to learn.

“Sometimes they come up and ask for a song that I don’t do, but I’ll say, ‘Of the millions and millions of songs ever written, that’s one I don’t know.’ Sometimes they laugh and sometimes they say, ‘You’re a fucking asshole.’ You just don’t

At times, though, doing a requested cover is the only way to win the room. Basiner says he will actually ask for a request if he can hear the buzz of conversation starting to take over a show. “Breaking down that division between audience and artists is really important to me,” he says.

Rowe finds another way to bridge the audience-request divide. He’ll play covers if they’re written on the backs of bills offered as tips. Of course, this can backfire, too.

“I got testy with a group who kept sending up money with requests on the back,” Rowe says. “I played them, and then I played a song I wanted to play.

Then they sent up a bill with, ‘play something that doesn’t suck,’ on the back. A lot of people think we’re just jukeboxes and they stick a dime in and they get what they want. But that’s not the way it works.”

The audience has a responsibility, Rowe and Basiner agree, to make requests that make sense. At least, they both suggest, have some understanding of what they’re up there trying to do. “We got a request for a Justin Bieber tune the other day,” Basiner laughs, “and it’s just like, ‘Really? Does that sound like something we would play?’ But that’s pretty rare.

We’ve stuck so firmly to the genre that we’re in that people for the most part have some sense.”

“I’m an entertainer first,” Rowe says, “and I am apologetic when I get a good and sensible request that I don’t know.

I want everyone to have fun. That’s my mission, and it bothers me when I can’t deliver that. But there are some people that you just can’t do anything for.”

And that’s when you just might get punched in the head. ^

Relieved of the crippling wars it endured on its soil throughout the ’90s and bolstered by a cultural nostalgia for brighter times, the Balkan suddenly seemed to American metropolitans like a ton of fun.

As if pulled directly from the sets of Emir Kusturica films, dozens of Balkan-styled brass bands began to appear in US metropolises, particularly New York. One of the earliest is Slavic Soul Party, an irresistible nine-piece brass band who defy traditional stages. Third of four in the UNE Art Gallery’s series of Maine Women Pioneers, the curators describe “Worldview” as an exhibit of artists “who are connected to their world . . . inspired by ethics, emotions, and existential holistic themes, as activists, healers, and visionaries.” That’s a definition with a pretty broad reach, and no surprise that each of these eleven career artists falls somewhere within that rubric. Yet while some of this work might benefit from greater explication, the show’s great pleasures come from tracking the real-world inquiries leading these artists far from the conventions of form.

Natasha Mayers is our most logical, accessible starting point. The galvanizing Midcoast maker produces visual work in myriad forms — from mural-painted telephone poles to bitingly ironic camo upholstery — but it wouldn’t be overstatement to say that the most profound impact of her work comes from the practical effects it has on the ground. Four stills here attest to that: from last year’s annual Fourth of July parade in her hometown of Whitefield, a spectacle of vaudeville and leftist-activist pasquinade of which Mayers is a key organizer. A large totem of acidly satirical license plates fashioned for the parade frames American life through a series of dysphoric filters, while downstairs, the exhibit expands into a substantial slide show, with splattery, impressionistic scenes evoking the horrors of Guantanamo, militarism, and corporate culture.

Judy Ellis Glickman is one of Maine’s most renowned art photographers, and her four lyrical black and white stills — from Cuba, Chile, and Nazi concentration camps in Poland — are masterful in their capacity to render an emotional subtext through darkness and light. We get formally much lighter fare from Barbara Goodbody, a nuanced photographer steeped in Indian cultural aesthetics, though her digital prints shown here felt too distant and synthetic to transport me.

Our show’s theme is more carefully guarded in the work of Marlene Ekola Gerberick, a Finnish artist living in Maine.

She makes dark, detailed, and poetic assemblages from curiosities both found and domestic. Several are symbolically rich and ritualistic yet nearly impossible to parse, but I found some ingress into “Moving Toward

Tuonela,” a sculptural tableau depicting a figure of a horse standing beside two sets of forearms reaching up from the ground like stalagmites. It’s a ghastly, cheeky scene, one that hinges on a pun: Tuonela both refers to a breed of horse and the Finnish word for the underworld. In a series of emotional, mysterious pieces, there is no point of entry more explicitly visible in Gerberick’s work than here.

Alice Spencer’s large acrylic canvases look like decorative tapestries from afar. “Kasaya #1” is a collision of garish, colorful patterns borrowed from African textile and drawing traditions. Spencer applies them through paint in irregular rhythms, with a result so counterintuitive and mechanical as to appear almost like a computer rendering. Her “Yardage” series sees indigenous patterns from another angle, taking the shapes and colors of displays from market villages without approximating the products. In broader conceptual gestures, fabric artist Melita Westerlund plays on similar dissonance, relying on a monstrous disunity between color and form. She shows several three-dimensional cotton fiber sculptures, each mutated into rippling, convulsive shapes. Another Finnish artist in Maine, Westerlund borrows from African and American fiber traditions to make work that could convincingly be from another planet.

But of all these worldly explorations and several more, I was most fixated by the work of Judith Allen-Efstathiou. Through several stark lithographs and drawings on tracing paper, she delivers three harrowing biopsies of tree species whose habitats were decimated by blight: one in Portland, one in the Appalachians, and another in Greece, which she smartly ties to that country’s economic crisis and ill-conceived austerity program.

The work is simple and sleek, and its import is evenly weighted between the larger topic and the artist’s investment in it. If you’re going to tarry in the rarefied terrain of visual art, there seems no more ethical way to take on the world. ^

Surviving winter with max garcía conover Part of what made Bon Iver’s debut For Emma, Forever Ago so instantly important was the almost tangible feeling of solitude it conveyed. Even if Justin Vernon’s words were muffled and muted at times, it didn’t matter.

You feel like you were right there in that cabin in the woods with him.

Max García Conover’s debut full-length, Burrow, doesn’t rise to the emotional heights of that album, but it shares a starkness, like listening to music through an Instagram filter, that conveys that same feeling of going to ground. Recorded in an attic studio over the winter by Pete Morse, the album is full of brief songs (just one of the 11 goes past three minutes) that can pass you by like a wisp of emotion triggered by a memory that’s just out of reach.

Morse is more than just engineer, though.

While Conover takes center stage with a fast and note-filled fingerstyle guitar playing and a resonant lower-register vocal, Morse chimes in and fills out with hints of guitar lines, doubling down on the atmosphere. Combine all that with Conover’s penchant for jamming lyrics into tight spaces and going outside your standard subject matter (this may be the only album you listen to this year to feature a woodthrush) and the album can at times feel like watching old Super-8 movies on a projector that’s moving slightly too fast.

“New Beast” is a stand out, with Sophie Nelson lending accompanying vocals for the entire track and more of a melodic hook than most songs here. Conover is accusatory: “You can talk of nothing . . . I don’t know what you’re for.” His playing is particularly engaging on “The Glow #4,” where he sits on top of a Morse guitar like an organ line that is warmth to indicate nostalgia: “There she goes/Grabbing from her tiptoes/And staggering, staggering.”

The best track, though is the longest and almost hidden at the end of the album. “The Wed-

As the driving force behind two of the better projects to ever release music in portland — cosades and Grand hotel (and Glory trap was pretty fun) — when Kyle Gervais says he has a solo project in the works, people pay attention. A musician’s musician, with a deep knowledge of and love for a wide spectrum of work, Gervais has a way of pushing boundaries and challenging the listener with songs that are familiar at their core. on this first KGFreeZe album, Sociopath, you can almost be lulled into thinking he’s making pop songs. the opening and title track is way more playful than anything Gervais has done recently, with a bouncy and melodic bass line and colorful keyboards. But what’s he been up to? “i spent the last year drinking every night and lying to myself/And everybody else.” there you have it. playing everything on the album but the drums (he brought in derek Gierhan for that), Gervais has created songs that play out like he’s lying on the couch and you’re the psychologist. or his girlfriend. “i never feel comfortable around anyone i don’t really know,” he confides in the ’80s-fueled “razzle dazzle,” “she liked the way i was when it was just the two of us.” like many of the songs here, instead of stark contrasts between verses and choruses we get a simmering that threatens to boil, but never quite gets to that point, as the heat is toggled up and down almost schizophrenically.

“Why you only call me when you wanna hook up,” he eventually accuses. “i’m getting tired, baby, of calling your bluff.” often, as in “dancing” or “come Around,” a repeating bass line is presented as a foundation on which he builds chiming keyboard chords or spare electric guitar leads. his vocals can sound desperate, pleading, but then switch quickly to haughtiness. “close encounters” is positively brooding, with narcotized vocals in the open encouraging, “you should get a little high with me/he’ll still be there when you get back home,” before he apes Sunset hearts and settles into a strutting bounce: “i’m sorry i screamed/ But you know i still love you.” “in too deep” is full of twinkling keyboards, like seeing stars; “i Want You” is like an early michael Jackson song from an alternative universe. “come Around” finishes with this quickly delivered “really wanna give you my love” that sounds like it could have come off the new timberlake album.

Sociopath is the kind of record i can’t quite come to grips with in the span of a mere 10 days of listening or so. Sometimes all i can hear is the chiming chords that infuse “can’t Get my mind off of You” like a clock striking 100 o’clock. At one point in “closer” i thought Gervais was going to enter with a rap verse like early run-dmc. And yet most of these songs are pretty damn accessible. ^

ding Line” stands out mostly for Conover’s solitary use of a more traditional strum, and vocals like he’s whispering in your ear so that you can almost feel his breath on your neck.

Like the best Wesley Allen Hartley songs, I found myself straining to make out every word and was often pleased when they came into focus: “Everybody calls her a poet/But they say it when they’re rolling their eyes.”

There’s a lot to unpack here and spring seems like a good time to air it out. ^

Spring sounds a note

F lotsa chatter about a new disc from electrohop producer gOd.daMn.chan. he drops Diamonds this week, and the two tracks we’ve heard are explorations in crackling rhythms, analog synths, and bizarrely thin and thumpy bass signals. Sort of a slicker, slightly less psychotropic cousin to altered gee’s Rise From Yr Grave, and an impressive addition to the catalogue of local hip hop records.

F those who thought the last single from portland-via-toronto rock band the bOx tiger was solid will have to pay attention to this new one: “Knives” is a driving, noisy power-pop track just as urgent as “Set Fire to Your Friends,” and prob-

ably an even better song. Judging from the pace and energy of these two burners, we can only imagine the dynamic, emotional vocals of Sonia Sturino carrying this entire record. the band release their debut record may 3 at the Big easy.

F A note of acclaim from the production end: adaM ayan of gateway Mastering had two cds on the Billboard classical charts last week, the violinist lindsey Stirling’s debut album and the moonrise Kingdom soundtrack. (Stirling’s there this week, too, and moonrise was a charttopper for a while in 2012.) to see these guys piling up awards is nothing new, but we’re accustomed to associating Ayan’s name with big-deal

pop and country records, so this classical grab is something of a novelty.

F continuing our obsession with the pursuit of metal mondays, we’ve located a new strain emerging at Mathew’s, the self-styled “oldest bar in portland.” too soon to say who’s playing

when, or if that’s something they’ll even announce, but we hope the torch stays lit.

F the punk band the Outfits, which started almost two years ago as a fierce trio of ladies, welcome two new members into the fold: rattlesnakes drummer mike cunnane and ryan owens of r.S.o., who both happen to be the husbands of originals Kate Sullivan-Jones and Sierra roberts. might read to outsiders like an interesting social experiment — or punchline material — but we’re excited to hear how they fill out the oldschool punk band’s sound. Songwriting duties will continue to fall to Sierra and Kate, and we look forward to seeing this band evolve.

Cinnamon’s seCret identity rediscovering age-old wisdom: it’s a meat lover _By linds a y st e rl ing Learning to cook with exotic ingredients is exciting, but what I like even better is seeing someone use an extremely familiar ingredient in a completely new way. It’s both uncomfortable and invigorating. One minute you think you know something about an ingredient, and then the next minute you see that you don’t know the half of it. This happened last month when I was cooking with a Somali woman in the Riverton neighborhood of Portland.

She was making a dish her family eats often for lunch: spiced rice topped with beef. In Somali, this is called bariis iyo hilib lo. Translation: rice and meat beef. She was sautéing diced onion in oil and adding freshly ground spices: coriander and cumin, a crushed chicken bouillon cube, and salt, and then she added ground cinnamon. If I hadn’t had a social filter, I would have said, “Ah! What are you doing? Cinnamon is for cinnamon buns, not beef dishes!”

This wasn’t the first time I couldn’t believe what someone from another culture was doing with cinnamon. An Afghani woman had put cinnamon in her lamb. Indians put cinnamon in their prawn curry, chicken biryani, and chicken tandoori. An Iraqi woman

boiled a chicken with a cinnamon stick.

An Eritrean woman put cinnamon in the spice mixture that went in her spicy chicken stew. So this has basically been the trend. Immigrants put cinnamon in their meat dishes and I, the American, freak out. At home, one of my hands has to force the other to put the cinnamon in these dishes.

Why am I so resistant to cinnamon going savory? As I’ve learned from cooking and tasting these immigrant dishes, cinnamon by itself is not sweet. It is mildly spicy, aromatic and drying. It activates the middle of the palate, and works well with other middle flavors like cloves, cumin, and meat. In the Indian and Eritrean dishes, the cinnamon has a stabilizing or grounding effect on the zippy heat of super-hot chilis. In the Somali beef and rice dish, the cinnamon, cumin, coriander, and chicken broth lend substance and body to the meal. It’s so much better with spices than plain!

For context, cinnamon was around long before the American psyche. According to one theory, traders were floating rafts of bark from Indonesia to east Africa as early as 2000 BCE. Then from east Africa, cinnamon traveled up through ports in the Red Sea and over land to

SPICE WITH SERIOUS HISTORY cinnamon: flavoring meat since mummies. what I understand, it was right then that the two sides of cinnamon diverged: sweet and savory.

I’m humbled to realize that cinnamon had something like a 3500-year culinary history before sugar was even discovered!

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is just the most recent tip of the iceberg. Underneath, I’m pretty sure, are millennia of cinnamon and meat. ^

Cinnamon traders were likely Arabs, but after 1518, the Portuguese, Dutch, and English cut out the Arab middlemen in the cinnamon trade by going themselves to an island off the coast of India (Sri Lanka), where cinnamon grew like gangbusters. Almost as soon as Western Europeans got their hands on their own direct supply of cinnamon, they also started producing their own supplies of a new ingredient, sugar, in the New World. From

however, Potter’s film doesn’t span decades, but focuses on one crucial period in the relationship between the title pair of pals.

In the sooty, pre–British Invasion London of 1962, Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) have gotten a head start on the counterculture to come.

Ginger’s father, Roland (Alessandro Nivola), is a pacifist and a professor, and the family’s best friends include a hip gay couple — Mark One (Timothy Spall) and Mark Two (Oliver Platt) — and gETTIng a HEad STaRT two young women close to the brink.

Bella (Annette Bening), a prickly feminist poet.

Rosa’s alternative lifestyle, however, be compared to other films. It resembles comes more from necessity than An Education (2009), and especially Sandra choice; her single mother has to work, Goldbacher’s exceptional bildungsroman leaving Rosa free to smoke, kiss boys, about two best friends growing up, Me and ponder eternal love. And Ginger’s Without You (2001). Unlike the latter,

circumstances don’t bear close scrutiny.

Her mother, once a painter, now cooks and cleans and tolerates not just Roland’s infidelities with students, but his pseudophilosophical self-justifications as well.

Meanwhile, Doomsday approaches. The Cuban Missile Crisis overshadows these petty squabbles, at least for Ginger. Encouraged by her bemused father, and more earnestly by “the Marks” and Bella, she throws herself into political activism, marching in peace rallies and writing poems about the Bomb.

But Rosa has drifted to other interests, which threaten catastrophe closer to home; as the world teeters on the brink, so too does the pair’s friendship.

It sounds schematic, but Potter’s assured eye (her style evokes the British New Wave of the ’60s) and the masterful performances (Fanning, in particular, steals every scene she’s in) keep the film honest. Toward the end it tends more to a whimper than a bang (Ginger reads The Waste Land at bedtime), but few other films have depicted so acutely the crushing disillusionment and infinite hope of growing up. ^

Sally Potter likes to mess around with form and narrative. Her Orlando (1992) adapted the Virginia Woolf novel, with Tilda Swinton as the Elizabethan cavalier of the title who lives for centuries and changes genders along the way. Her last two films, Yes (2004) and Rage (2009), were, respectively, written in iambic pentameter and shot on a cell phone. With her latest, though, she drops the fancy stuff and confronts her themes head-on. In part autobiographical, this may be her most conventional film, and it is also her most powerful and challenging.

It’s so conventional, in fact, that it can
