turned up its toes, it’s hardly f fair for Phillipe and Jorge to criti-

cize another local media organ.

So we’ll let our old pal Scottso MacKay at Rhode Island Public Radio dissect The Urinal’s slumping circulation figures.

Citing WPRI’s news blogger Ted Nesi, MacKay reported that the BeloJo’s circulation has plummeted by thousands of copies in the past year. This is no big surprise at Casa Diablo, where we nevertheless remain staunch subscribers with hopes for the best (and an awareness that we’re not technologically skilled enough to decipher the BeloJo’s hideous web site).

Scottso goes on to describe The Other Paper in mostly harsh, unflattering terms. Though, as a former BeloJo scribe, he does defend the many high-end reporters on Fountain Street whom P&J equally admire.

One person who cannot be amused is Fountain’s Street’s new flavor of the month, Karen Bordeleau, of whom MacKay writes, “The ProJo’s new executive editor is Karen Bordeleau, who took over yesterday from Tom Heslin, who retired early for medical reasons.

Bordeleau is a strong manager but lacks any significant reporting experience; there is no sentence she has ever written that any seasoned journalist wishes he/she had.”

Oof! If you’ve ever been a reporter, that’s a gut shot. C’mon Scottso, give the girl a break.

George “Dubya” Bush — not only one of the worst presidents in US history but possibly the most intellectually incurious; a man who seemingly received his intellectual training from flash cards — now has a library named in his honor at Southern Methodist University, aka “the Harvard of Texas.”

What’s next? A museum full of oil paintings named in honor of visual arts connoisseur Stevie Wonder?

On the occasion of the library’s opening, every GOP and conservative hack in the country — including many ex-employees of the sodden Daddy’s boy — has been trying desperately to justify Dubya’s economically, morally, and socially indefensible actions.

The little dope apparently even had a negative effect on his mother — the equally detestable Barbara — who, when questioned about an Iraq invasion based on

phony claims of Saddam Hussein’s WMDs and the projected loss of many American troops’ lives, said, “Why should we hear about body bags and death? . . . It’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?”

“Beautiful,” indeed. She must be a “compassionate conservative,” right?

When questioned about Dubya’s brother Jeb Bush’s presidential aspirations in a recent Today show interview Babs said, “We’ve had enough Bushes.”

Powerhouse Play

A heads-up to playgoers about the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre’s staging of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, which begins previews on May 2. The play is directed by P&J’s friend and colleague, Judith Swift and, as part of award-winning Galway playwright Martin McDonagh’s “Leenane Trilogy,” it’s everything from comic to dark and troubling. (McDonagh also wrote and directed the film In Bruges.)

What could be bad about a play that, as the Gamm describes, focuses on the “suffocating relationship between 40-year-old spinster Maureen and her aging and increasingly needy mother, Mag — two seriously flawed characters locked in mutual loathing”?

ton as the Promised Land,” Swift informs P&J. “I was talking with a nurse who lives right near the fateful Marathon finish line and who also remembered her girlhood fear of bombs as everyday realities. Boston is the land of Irish immigrants who went on to teach us all about the journey from bigotry to prominence. The courage recently shown by its residents owes much to the Celtic spirit of that long subjugated and often spurned tribe.”

rallying for riPTa

At 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 2 — the day this issue hits newsstands — there will be a rally at the State House in support of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, aka “the buses.” As you probably know, our fiscally challenged transit system is once again facing serious changes unless General Assembly leaders can enact financing reforms. To that end, State Representative Jay O’Grady will introduce a bill supported by numerous community leaders and transit advocates.

Organizers are happy to report that Speaker Gordon Fox has agreed to speak at the rally, where he will be presented with a letter (already signed by many representatives) to make the transit funding issue a priority during this legislative session

Sombreros off to Don Rhodes and the RIPTA Riders Alliance for their hard work in support of a thoughtful and comprehensive transit strategy. As a RIPTA rider himself, Jorge fully supports this effort. (And a note of disclosure: Phillipe serves on the Coalition for Transportation Choices, one of the advocates for transit funding in Rhode Island.)

A great lineup of women rockers will be performing at a show called “ROCK GIRLS ROBOTS” on the afternoon and evening of Sunday, May 5 at Roots Cultural Center in downtown Providence.

The event is a fundraiser for the Trudeau Center and Sojourner House. There’ll be raffles; lots of food from local purveyors; and performances by Royal Ram, Gabby Rizzle, Castle, Malyssa BellaRosa & the Liberators, Roz Raskin & the Rice Cakes, Nymphidels, and others.

If you want to see what local young women are doing musically, this is the show to catch.

a Joyous Day anD nighT

Last Sunday’s second annual induction ceremony and concert for the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame was a joyous celebration. It was an all day/all night affair and there was so much marvelous music, reuniting of old friends, and sharing of stories that Jorge (Rudy Cheeks) can only recount some of the things that he witnessed.

The afternoon performances

kicked off with Bob and Tom Petteruti leading a crack group of jazz musicians through a beautiful version of the Glenn Miller chestnut “String of Pearls” and other tunes associated with Bobby Hackett, the legendary cornetist. Mary Lee Partington, Cathy Clasper-Torch, and Kevin Doyle sang and danced a tribute to the great George M. Cohan. The next generation of Eddie Zack’s Hayloft Jamboree performed and Adrienne West, accompanied by Mark Taber, belted out a couple of Jimmie Crane’s hit songs. Sissieretta Jones was also honored.

In the evening, Bill Flanagan humbly accepted his induction, taking time to make special note of longtime Phoenix editor Lou Papineau and NewPaper founder Ty Davis. And then there was the great bluesmaster Paul Geremia, who dazzled us with his magnificent picking.

All day long, the Cowsills were bubbling with delight and when they took the stage they shared that joy with a perfect performance of a slew of hits. Then Steve Smith & the Nakeds really revved up the party with their horn-driven R&B. With more than 60 past and present members of the Naked Truth/Steve Smith & the Nakeds family on stage at once, we thought the platform was going to collapse. But the stage held and it was a very special night for Rhode Island music. ^

A Fine vision for health care in Rhode Island

It’s no easy task to schedule an interview with Dr. Michael Fine. The man has a lot on his plate.

Since assuming duties as Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health in July 2011, he’s been on a mission to get all Rhode Islanders tested for HIV over the next four years, to mitigate teen pregnancies, to reduce the number of smokers, and to curb prescription drug abuse. In addition to these overarching goals, the Department of Health has recently rolled out its vision for the Rhode Island Primary Care Trust, a dramatic revision of the health care care system for the Ocean State.

In essence, the Primary Care Trust will create and fund “Neighborhood Health Stations” across the state offering a myriad of services REACHING OUT fine. including primary care, dental care, and mental health care. The model is based on a concept of a “patient-centered medical home,” which employs a team of family physicians, social workers, pharmacists, and physician assistants working together to care for the collective health of a community and its inhabitants. The department projects that Neighborhood Health Stations will offer care to 75 neighborhoods of approximately 10,000 individuals each.

Recognizing the need to explain this vision, Fine recently teamed up with AS220 and the Roots Cultural Center in Providence for three free health care forums on the changing nature of health care in the state: “The Current State of Health Care in Rhode Island” (held on April 24); “’OBAMACARE’: What it Means for Rhode Island” (held on May 1); and “Michael Fine’s Ideal Vision: What Health Care Could Be in Rhode Island,” on May 8, which will focus specifically on the Primary Care Trust.

Receiving an impromptu call from Fine’s office, I was told he had 20 minutes to speak about the forums and his vision for the future of the state’s health care system. Our conversation has been edited and condensed.

HOW DID THE IDEA OF THE HEAlTH cArE FOrUMS cOME ABOUT? I was having dinner at AS220 and discussing

health care for artists. The idea for the three forums came from that discussion to educate the artistic community, looking particularly at artists, writers, and musicians who haven’t always been well served by the health care system. [By developing the forums with AS220 and the Roots Cultural Center,] we broadened out the audience to be sure we included people working in the hospitality industry who often don’t have health insurance. Because, from an outsider’s perspective, the health care world is pretty opaque. [Our goal] is to spend some time discussing how the moving parts work and what changes are coming.

WHAT WAS THE rESPONSE TO THE FIrST FOrUM? The response was phenomenal. I expected the event to last

Rhode Islanders. There are people that want to take their health into their own hands by exercising and thinking about their diet and that’s great. The problem for us is the people who don’t want [to engage in their health] and choose not to. To me, that’s their right.

But the problem is, we know there are 50,000-60,000 Rhode Islanders that have undiagnosed high blood pressure. We also have 30,000-40,000 Rhode Islanders with undiagnosed diabetes. That’s a lot of people with diagnoses that aren’t actively engaged in their own care. [W]e have 1200 [preventable] deaths a year from heart disease and stroke that we probably don’t need to have. The challenge for a coherent health care system is to meet people where they are and encourage those that are engaged, but also not abandon those not connected to their health. Because the cost and public health outcomes have to do with everyone, not just the people who are engaged.

“Michael Fine’s Ideal Vision” will take place at AS220 (115 Empire St, Providence) on May 8 at 5:30 pm. The event is free to be public.

“Am I a comic book weirdo?” Jon B. Cooke yells.

“No,” the owner of the Time Capsule — Cranston’s beehive for comic-book lovers — calls from behind the counter.

Cooke is unconvinced. We’re in a store that sells vintage copies of XMen, Bionic Woman lunchboxes, and Star Trek action figures and he’s telling a life story in which “words and pictures on paper” play a central role.

When his “proto-hippie” mother a brought him to live in Europe as a kid, he explains, American comics like Batman and Mister Miracle were his education. Then, when he came back to the US and settled in South Kingston as a preteen, he and his brothers started their first fanzine, The Omega Comic Magazine Review (Cooke still lives in West Kingston). The marriage of magazines and comics stuck. Decades later, Cooke would win an armful Eisner awards — the Oscars of the comics world — for his magazine Comic Book Artist, which ran from 1998 to 2005.

As he talks, Cooke dances between a boyish giddiness for characters like Superman and Captain America and grown-up rage over how badly those characters’ creators have been screwed. Comic book artists are treated worse than almost anyone except sex workers, he says. And his new magazine, Comic Book Creator, is aimed to help stop that. “[T]his is all about dignity,” Cooke writes in the debut issue’s introduction. The following articles fulfill that promise. There are conversations with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and prolific DC and Marvel contributor Alex Ross about their journeys through the business. There is a guest column profiling the New York-based copyright defenders organization, the Artists Rights Society.

And then there is Cooke’s 8000-word cover story, not-so-subtly titled, “If Kirby Is King, Why Haven’t Jack’s Heirs Made One Measly, Thin Dime Out of the Billions of Dollars Generated by His Creations’ Hollywood Motion Pictures?” The article profiles “likely the most prolific comic book artist of all time, [who] singlehandedly established the visual vernacular of the super-hero . . . the most important creator the field of mainstream comic books has ever produced. Period.”

As we talk, Cooke bounces around the Time Capsule to prove his point.

“See that Fighting American right there?” Cooke says, pointing to rows of plastic-sleeved comics displayed on shelves behind the counter. He ticks off other titles on display: The Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men. Jack Kirby had a hand in all of them, he says.

He walks to a wall rack and pulls down a comic. “Unquestionably this is a Jack Kirby co-creation: Thor, the mighty Thor,” he says, opening the book to the credits page. “And as we can see right there, there is no co creator credit.”

“The parasites in their shiny suits control much of Jack Kirby’s life’s work now,” Cooke writes in the story’s explosive finale. “The Marvel/ Disney empire is raking in billions of dollars from the fruit of his imagination and they aren’t leaving scraps for his children and grandchildren.”

Cooke’s passion for Kirby extends beyond a simple admiration for the fruits of the man’s intergalactic imagination. He describes how the man — born Jacob Kurtzberg — worked his way out of the ghettos of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, fought Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge, and then made time for fans and young artists after he made it big. He was a “father figure,” whom Cooke met twice at conventions in the 1970s.

“There’s a reason why Captain America’s my favorite superhero,” Cooke says before leaving. “He is absolutely my favorite superhero, not only because he was created by Jack Kirby, but because he is Jack Kirby.”

Free Comic Book Day takes place Saturday, May 4 at comic stores around the country.

The Time Capsule will host a debut event for Comic Book Creator on Wednesday, May 8 from 12 to 6 pm. Cooke will be there, signing copies and talking comics.

I confirmed and learned how confused people are about the difference between health insurance and health care. There was a woman — a small business owner who [had] just come from a divorce — who is still on her husband’s insurance and was worried about what happens when she’s no longer on her husband’s insurance.

She was looking at paying $7000-$8000 a year for a single person health insurance [policy]. From her perspective, health care costs $7000 or $8000 a year.

What she hadn’t realized is primary care [can cost well under that rate] and was something she could very easily afford.

WAS THErE ANY NOTABlE TAKEAWAY FrOM THE EVENT? One great takeaway was the notion that the responsibility for health care may be with communities. When you look at education, communities are involved in providing education for themselves with school boards and school board meetings and school board budgets, but nobody does that in the US around health care. The real interesting takeaway was a developing idea that health care is something communities can and should do for themselves, not only for medical services — particularly primary care services — but other kinds of [services] that can create and influence the health of an individual or health of a population. Communities can build bike paths and think about childbirth education together.

Brown’s Center for the study of slavery and JustiCe Confronts the university’s — and ameriCa’s — shame _By P h il iP eil It’s a late April evening at Brown University and a crowd has gathered in an auditorium off the Main Green.

Some guests have grey beards and hearing aids; most are teens and twentysomethings chatting excitedly.

Tonight’s film, Django Unchained — Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning, $400 million-grossing seventh feature — needs little introduction, so professor of Africana studies Anthony Bogues offers a different kind of preface.

He introduces himself as the current director of Brown’s Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, which effectively opened its doors in February with free, public events like tonight’s screening.

“The Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, many of you may not know,” he says, “emerged out of a series of discussions that happened on this campus between 2003 and 2006, in which we attempted to study the relationship of the origins of this university to the Atlantic slave trade.” He refers to a sheet circulating around the room and encourages everyone — students, faculty, members of the Providence community — to sign up for updates about the center’s progress.

“We are not just a scholarly center,” he says. “We are a center with a public education mission.”

Then the film rolls, in all of its cartoonish, bloody, pulpy, quasi-historical Tarantino-ness. It is a film that, among other things, purports to depict slavery in the antebellum American South. Over the course of the story, a slave named Broomhilda is branded on her face with a hot iron; bound and whipped while she shrieks in agony; locked naked in an underground metal cell called the Hot Box, then roused from the cell and carted away naked in a wheelbarrow. Other slaves are marched at gunpoint while wearing metal muzzles and shackles that cut their ankles raw. During one particularly gruesome scene, two shirtless slaves fight for the amusement of a plantation owner named Calvin Candie (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) who yells, “Keep fighting, niggers!” before one man kills the other by crushing his skull with a hammer.

The film’s ending is vaguely analogous to that of Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, in which Jews orchestrate the explosion of a movie theater holding Adolf Hitler and hundreds of Nazi officers. In Django, it is a white-pillared Mississippi plantation house called Candyland that detonates while the title character — played by Jamie Foxx — rides away with Broomhilda. A spattering of confused applause fills the auditorium as the lights flicker on.

The following night, many attendees return to a lounge in the Brown Campus Center for a panel discussion of the film with a Yale film scholar and two faculty members from Brown’s Africana Studies department. During the conversation, Tarantino is compared to a P.T. Barnumesque “carnival barker” and participants pick apart the veracity of Django’s use of phrenology.

“This is about the white imagination.”

Bogues, the moderator of the discussion, ends with an anecdote about how he once tried to sell a screenplay about the life of Marcus Garvey, only to be told by producers: “Where is the white woman?

Though no one mentions it, the panel takes place on a notable anniversary.

April 30, 2013 is exactly 10 years after Ruth Simmons — Brown’s first female president and the first African American president in Ivy League history — addressed a letter to Brown faculty members and students inviting them to serve on a committee “that I hope will help the campus and the nation come to a better understanding of the complicated, controversial questions surrounding the issue of reparations for slavery.”

The rooTs of The CenTer

Brown isn’t the first university to establish a center examining forms of slavery. The Centre for the Study of International Slavery at the UK’s Liverpool University was founded in 2006 and, closer to Providence, Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, & Abolition has been hosting conferences and scholars since 1998.

But few schools have had a more personal or public tussle with their history than Brown, an Ivy League institution named for a family whose fortune came partially from the traffic and trade of human beings.

This history was discussed to varying degrees before Simmons’s famous steering committee. Professor Walker points to a 1968 campus visit when the author Horace Bond highlighted the school’s ties to the triangle trade.

But the issue exploded in the early 2000s. In 2001, stacks of the Brown Daily Herald were snatched when the paper ran an advertisement by conservative commentator David Horowitz that read “Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Blacks is a Bad Idea for Blacks — and Racist, Too!” In 2005, Simmons and her quest for institutional introspection were profiled in a New Yorker article titled “Peculiar Institutions.”

The steering committee released their 100-plus-page report the following fall, writing in one section, “[T]here is no questions that many of the assets that underwrote the University’s creation and growth derived, directly and indirectly, from slavery and the slave trade.” Other portions describe how Brown’s University Hall — “the ‘Superman building’ of its day,” local historian Ray Rickman says — was constructed with the use of slave labor.

The report, available free online and for $7.50 at the Brown Bookstore, concluded with a series of recommendations.

First was for Brown to “tell the truth in all its complexity.” Second, was to create a memorial commemorating the university’s — and Rhode Island’s — ties to the slave trade.

The third recommendation read, in part: “We believe that Brown, by virtue of its history, has a special opportunity and obligation to foster research and teaching on the issues broached in this report, including slavery and other forms of historic and contemporary injustice, movements to promote human rights, and struggles over meaning of individual and institutional responsibility. We recommend the establishment of a scholarly center dedicated to these questions.”

But then five years passed. The undergraduate population regenerated, with graduates taking with them much of the furor over Brown’s potential response to its history. According to a May 2012 Brown Daily Herald article, controversy gave way to

apathy. The report, the article said was, “essentially forgotten.”

That month, Bogues was named the director of a new academic center on campus: the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice. After a few preliminary events and an open house in the fall, in February they began hosting lectures, film screenings (Lincoln, Amistad), musical performances, and panel discussions about mass incarceration and the lasting legacies of slavery.

The programs are explicitly public, both in who is invited to attend and participate.

The week before the Django screening, a panel discussion called “Contemporary Forms of Human Bondage” featured Raymond Watson, director of the Mount Hope Neighborhood Association, discussing the differences between forced labor, slavery, human trafficking, and debt bondage. Next to him was Brown student Mariela Martinez, the daughter of sweatshop laborers in Los Angeles, who described her work interviewing factory workers in central America and organizing for Brown’s Student Labor Alliance.

Next to her was an activist from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and his translator (also an activist), who told students about an upcoming protest at a Wendy’s in Providence against the chain’s refusal to sign the Fair Food Program on behalf of underpaid tomato workers.

angry when you bring it out into the light of day,” he says. People don’t like to admit that slavery was not merely an unfortunate part of our history, he adds, it was a crime against humanity.

Rediker traveled to Providence in February to deliver one of the CSSJ’s first public lectures, “The African Origins of the Amistad Rebellion.” (The lecture, like many of the CSSJ’s programs, is available on YouTube.)

“We have got this extremely violent history in which slavery is a centerpiece.

And there is a real disinclination to face it,” he says. “So in some ways what Brown did was to enact, in microcosm, what needs to happen at a much larger level.”

“It could have easily just stopped right at the report,” says Brown’s professor Walker. “It could have easily stopped right at a series of recommendations that may or may not have been fulfilled.” But by institutionalizing the center, the school refuses to end the conversation. “There is something about a the power of presence of a center that we cannot underestimate,” Walker says.

As part of this continuing commitment, on Thursday, May 9, the Center will unveil its first exhibition, entitled, “Ships of Bondage and the Fight for Freedom.” The show focuses on three ships — the Amistad, the Meermin, and the Sally — remembered for the bloody revolts that took place on their decks.

As visitors walk through the exhibition space at the Brown Center for Public Humanities on Benefit Street, they will view maps of global slave trading routes; read panels that describe the social dynamics between captains, sailors, and slaves aboard the ships; and learn about how slaves ships were specially outfitted with guns and nets. They will hear first-person accounts, recorded by local actors, of the experience of the middle passage and life on American plantations.

Next year, the Center’s programming will grow bigger. In the spring of 2014, the 250th anniversary of Brown’s founding, the center will host a multi-day international conference on the subject of slavery.

By that time, Bogues says, he hopes the university will have installed its permanent memorial on the University’s Front Green, in clear sight of University Hall and the famed Van Wickle Gates.

Bogues, who grew up in Jamaica, says he sees the legacies of slavery play out every day in this country. He sees it in the education and prison systems; he hears it in the conversations among local high school students riding with him on RIPTA buses.

Providence for him isn’t just a place to work. It is “a space in which one can begin to think about America, the meaning of America.”

It’s true that the US is a place where people can remake themselves faster than anywhere else in the world, he says.

“But in that remaking, we tend to forget or minimize the business of history.” ^

In early April, a copy of country singer Brad Paisley’s song with rapper LL Cool J, “Accidental Racist,” leaked to the Internet. The song — in which Paisley croons “Our generation didn’t start this nation/ And we’re still paying for the mistakes/That a bunch of folks made long before we came,” and Cool J rhymes, “If you don’t judge my gold chains/I’ll forget the iron chains” — was met with near-universal ridicule, labeled one of the worst pop songs of all time before it was even officially released.

In February, Emory University president James Wagner asked for forgiveness for his “clumsiness and insensitivity” after publishing a column in the university magazine that spoke favorably of the infamous “three-fifths” compromise tendered between Northern and Southern delegates at the 1787 Philadelphia Constitutional Convention. (A year early, the school’s Board of Trustees issued a “formal statement of regret,” stating “Emory acknowledges its entwinement with the institution of slavery throughout the College’s early history. Emory regrets both this undeniable wrong and the University’s decades of delay in acknowledging slavery’s harmful legacy.”)

These are just two examples of the ways Americans flail (and fail) in public discussions of slavery — those of us, that is, who publicly talk about slavery at all.

University of Pittsburgh history professor Marcus Rediker says he received hate mail when he recently toured the country to talk about his book The Slave Ship: A Human History. The reason for the letters is simple, he says.

Our erstwhile colleague Ryan Reed wrote: Most hip new bands save their experimental, reactionary “fuck you” album for when they have something to rebel against. foAls got theirs out of the way early: 2008’s Antidotes was a detached, often robotic stew of math-rock rhythms and Afrobeat electric guitar pointillism, with Yannis Philippakis snarling detached art-school nonsense in the crevices.

Though Foals showed signs of depth and maturity on 2010’s Total Life Forever, they’ve made their biggest leap on the newish Holy Fire, embracing the soulfulness and passion lurking beneath their intricate sonics. Most of the guitars still do that prickly math-rock thing, overlapping in curlicue precision, but they’re used as exclamation points, decorating the euphoric psychedelics and pulsating grooves. Drummer Jack Bevan remains the band’s not-so-secret weapon, with his delirious hi-hat flurries and polyrhythmic flair, yet grounding the album with elemental percussive muscle.

But even at their most expansive, Foals are digging into more primal territory. The funkiness, the headiness, the playfulness — it comes together on “My Number,” a dizzy, disillusioned indiefunk anthem with a four-onthe-floor stomp and trebly guitars that unzip like a fine pair of leather pants. Foals haven’t lost their math-rock edge; they’ve infused it with fun. Mercantile Block building, with their neo-old-timey signs, is the residents’ entrance to the building. It is against AS220’s religion to leave any space empty that can be filled with art. So the lobby is the AS220 Resident Gallery, which occupants of the building take turns filling with their stuff.

Of late, Jacqueline Frole has covered the golden mustard walls with 107 or so framed pictures for an installation she’s dubbed the “Family Room” (131 Washington St, Providence, through May 27; ask at AS220’s Project Space for someone to let you in the locked door).

The quantity grabs your attention. As you look closer, you find Frole’s pictures are fashion and advertising and celebrity photos that she has altered by sticking on two extra heads or a spare set of lips or an arm emerging like a third leg from GET IT? segal’s cats. a lady’s pants. I’m partial to the ones with extra limbs. The extra facial features feel obvious, too just-pasted-on. But at first glance, you almost don’t notice that, for example, two pouty models each have four legs. Frole’s additions are relatively seamless. And then there’s the joke on the original photos about how leggy these ladies are.

At times, the effect is to amplify the sexual come-on of the images — like the blonde lady in all denim who now has a second crotch and legs bending upward in what has to be some sort of daredevil yoga pretzel position. At times, it sort of suggests motion, like the four-legged lass dashing across a beach in her creamy dress and cardigan sweater.

wingspan, which is both funny and serves to emphasize the amazing stick bug physique of most of the bodies here.

All of this surrealism is witty and entertaining. What elevates it beyond your usual photo collage wiseassery is a pair of chairs. Frole doubles the length of the armrests of a wooden, spindle, curved-back chair so that they reach far forward. A wooden rocking chair gets an extra pair of armrests on top of its first set and a second back rising from the top of the first chair back. The thing rises upward like the seat for a granny with short legs, a very long torso, and (maybe) multiple arms.

Resting on the chairs are, respectively, a teddy bear with two heads and a teddy bear with four arms. Attached to the wall is a lamp. And then stuck on its bottom is another copy of the same lamp, but upsidedown as if it were its reflection.

In other words, Frole continues the multiplying and mirroring and twinning of the collages by extending it into the actual world. Your eyes don’t quite want to believe that it’s real, but the insistent physical truth of it keeps smacking you in the head. It can throw you off balance. It’s a good feeling.

Joseph Aaron Segal, whose serious World of JAS de-

signs often feature glam prints and what seems to be f ripped up sweaters, competed in the recently concluded

season of Lifetime’s Project Runway, but was booted off relatively early when judges, including Bette Midler, told him, “We don’t get that at all.” Alas.

At Craftland (235 Westminster St, Providence, through May 11), he’s showcasing his Pretty Snake side project, which is a retro-’80s pop merging of Andy Warhol and LOLcats.

Which means lots of pillows edged with pink fringe or pompons and featuring fabric screenprinted with pictures of mounds of kitties, augmented with plastic doll eyes.

There are also his Mutant Cats pillows, printed with pictures of cats whose faces are filled with lots of eyes for a bug-like effect.

If cats aren’t your thing, Segal makes morbidly funny curtains and pillows (and, though not seen here, leggings) out of an old woodcutlooking pattern depicting witch burning.

But really, it’s all about the cute cats. Who can resist the pillow with the googly-eyed kitty embellished with a bowtie? Even Bette Midler must admit that this is genius. She just must. ^

dance A tAngled web Paula Hunter’s AwAy From Home _BY J oH nette rod r igu ez In an ongoing series of monologues that began with Paula Hunter’s Home Alone more than five years ago, this comic commentator on life as she (and we) know it is currently presenting Away From Home at the Church of the Redeemer (655 Hope St, Providence, May 7 and 8 at 6 pm). Following the format of previous Home pieces, young dancers from Hunter’s JUMP! company join her in creating movements or gestures that underscore her descriptions and observations.

The spotlight piece of the evening is “The Spider Bite,” with musical interludes by Prokofiev, Ali and St. Lunatics, and Cream.

capsule reviews stars in this boomer drama about the Weather Underground, impressive for its cast of aging talents (Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Richard Jenkins, Brendan Gleeson). The story hardly seems worth all the firepower: Redford is a former Weatherman, thought to have killed a guard during an early-’80s bank robbery in Michigan, who goes on the run after his cover in Albany, New York, is blown by dogged reporter Shia LaBeouf. There’s the usual handwringing about whether the ends justified the means, tarted up with a little Occupy Wall Street rhetoric; the high celebrity quotient tends to work against the drama, reminding us what a privileged generation this was and how its endless examination of itself in popular culture was part of that privilege. Terrence Howard, Stanley Tucci, and Anna Kendrick round out the cast. | 125m |

XXX 42 | 2013 | Like many Hollywood sports movies, this Jackie Robinson biopic seems to be pitched at high schoolers, but writer-director Brian Helgeland still manages a pretty absorbing account of Robinson’s rookie year as the first black player in major league baseball. Chadwick Boseman is appropriately anguished as Robinson, who struggles to control his rage as he absorbs a torrent of abuse from white fans, players, and officials.

But ironically, the most valuable player here is Harrison Ford, giving

one of the best performances of his career as Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey. At 70, Ford has finally grown into his curmudgeonly persona, and he digs into the role of Rickey, reconciling the deep feeling of Christian brotherhood and naked professional ambition that motivated him to give Robinson a shot.

The strong supporting cast includes Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Alan Tudyk, and John C. McGinley (as sportscaster Red Barber). | 128m |

Four Glasgow losers sentenced to community service are introduced to the world of whiskey tasting by their crew supervisor, and the most intelligent and intrepid of them, an expectant father trying to escape the working-class cycle of poverty and violence, hatches a scheme to steal some rare scotch from a distillery before it’s auctioned for a million pounds or more. Proletarian filmmaker Ken Loach has tried his hand at comedy before (Looking for Eric), with less than stellar results, but this time he and his longtime screenwriter, Paul Laverty, find a good balance between drama and wacky character moments; the heist comedy is nicely underplayed, though thematically it’s fairly consistent with Loach’s other work, suggesting that the only way to triumph over the thieving rich is to beat them at their own game.

They also convey a sense of pathetic insecurity behind the characters’ cartoonish machismo, with its rampant sexism, sadism, and homophobia. PINES | 2012 | A motorcycle stunt rider (Ryan Gosling) discovers that the woman he loved and left a year earlier (Eva Mendes) has given birth to a son by him, and his half-baked decision to become a better father ends tragically. This naturalistic drama is ambitious to the point of being unwieldy, and after a while it begins trotting out familiar characters (Ray Liotta as a dirty cop) and situations (an execution in the woods, a la Miller’s Crossing). But once the story has advanced from one generation to the next and its thematic sweep has become apparent, these flaws seem much more tolerable. Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) directed a script he cowrote with Ben Coccio, whose stunning debut feature, Zero Day (2003), deserves a much wider audience. | 140m |
