We’re going to save the clichés of New Year – New You, yes really, we are. However we do want to say that at the start of any New Year we should all look to be more, do more, have more and give more in life (ok so perhaps a slight cliché) As with any new beginning this is our time to focus on what really matters, plan our goals and strive for whatever makes us happy. For some it’s business and the corporate ladder, for others it’s starting new businesses, investing our time wisely, giving time up for others, either way the time is now to act and make things happen. Here at Team Box we’ve had enough of depressing headlines, recession news and similar, we want our readers to start thinking positive and embrace the beautiful area in which we live. There is so much to do and see and sometimes we forget how good we really have it. We aim for The Box to represent the good things in life and always welcome your thoughts and feedback. As a new magazine we welcome all ideas and want to hear your news and updates no matter how big or small! Here are the things trending in this issue, all for your enjoyment; #SkiSeason

KEEPING THINGS COOL

Featured at the restaurant show in Earls Court, London, a Wice wine and champagne cooler and stabiliser makes the perfect gift for wine-lovers. Christmas may be over and done with for another year but there’s no reason to entertain at home instead of venturing out in the cold, dark months. This is not only useful but a great talking point too. Plus Valentine’s Day is only weeks away so if you do know someone who loves to entertain guests and keep the wine on hand at all times this could make a cunning gift.

Wice jewel collection also available Price on request - wiceuk.com

SUNDAY ROASTS

It’s dark and cold at this time of year so spend weekends sitting by the fire at the Cliff in Canford Cliffs, ordering from their rustic menu and enjoying the contemporary yet cosy surroundings. We love that you can go for a walk then pop in for coffee or meet friends and go all the way with the full Sunday Roast. One of the best places to stay out of the cold and really enjoy the food and wine on offer.

e’ve heard the term super-yacht and super-car and now there comes the super-chalet. Chalet Marco Polo in ski favourite Val ‘d’Sere is something worthy of the Gods. It’s no ordinary chalet, as it boast opulent decor, open log fires, dramatic lighting, a pool, gymnasium, hot tub, your own chef and the list goes on that your jaw just keeps on dropping. For those of you that hit the slopes annually, ski trips can be rather exhausting. Not only does one spend the majority of the day taking physical exercise, which, unless you are a professional sports person, can be a bit of a shock to the body, but you are also living and exercising at altitude, therefore making the effort even greater. This isn’t to say that the experience is by any means unpleasant, and the joy of skiing is that you pick your own pace, but there is no getting away from the inevitable aches and pains and general need for a bit of pampering. Step on in chalet Marco Polo by Consensio; a company who realise the importance of relaxation and that little bit of luxury on the slopes. So much so that all of their chalets have spa areas with massage rooms, hot-tubs, saunas, hammams and in some cases pools like this; assets which are greatly appreciated by their guests after a full day on the slopes. Then there’s something extra, exceptionally special about chalet Marco Polo. If you want wow-factor then here it is. Marco Polo is a divine utopia in the middle of the mountain, sitting snow-covered and immaculate ready to take your breath away with each look and turn. This

place takes service one step further too with a permanent spa manager in residence and four staff to see to your every need. Its décor and interior is mind-blowing, with rooms fit for kings. The bar calls you to sit at it and drink Perrier Jouet all night just to watch the sun set on the snow and to take in your surroundings and that very moment in time. The bathroom boasts rustic glamour with huge windows to just peacefully gaze at the snow capped mountains. Then there’s the dining area perfectly set for your party and evenings entertainment as you are personally cooked for by your very own chef. Over-sized cushions, sofas to relax into, open-plan spaces all presented incredibly well and polished, this chalet is any snow-seekers dream. It is not every day you experience such luxury in the Alps. Although lying in the heart of Val ‘d’Sere, Marco Polo enjoys extreme privacy. It sleeps twelve adults and two children so if you book in one large group the entire chalet becomes yours. Treat it as your recluse, your hideaway, after a hard day on the slopes. Sit back on the indulgent sofas with a glass of Perrier Jouet (did we mention it's unlimited all week), keep warm by one of the stunning fires, read from the library of books or relax and socialise with friends by the bar area. The choice really is yours and with so much to choose from in one chalet you won’t know what to do first. Having an in-house spa manager there are treatments such as manicures and massages to try and basking in the beautifully lit, spacious pool (complete with jet stream), looking out the windows to a snow covered landscape is something many only dream of. A true masterpiece of style, Marco Polo combines contemporary comfort and traditional materials to create a chalet like no other. Exceptional surroundings, extraordinary living, professional service and the ultimate in ski chalets. This really is a piece of heaven on earth.

Foods to melt fat Grapefruit

Soybean

Protein is at the top of the list in foods that require effort to digest, even more than common fats. Consuming proteins forces your body and digestive system to work hard at processing what you take in; having to burn more calories to achieve the goal. Therefore it’s essential to focus on clean, lean protein to promote healthy weight loss. Protein that is soy-based (you will see this in a fortitude of protein shakes and bars) is the magic ingredient that helps shed excess fat. By increasing the soy protein in your diet, you’ll be fuelling your muscles which will help you burn fat at a faster pace - plus you’ll tone your body up as the fat comes off so that you have a more contoured physique.

Spinach Spinach is an anti-cancerous property being made up of a variety of important constituents that have been linked to good health and cancer prevention. The folate, tocopherol and chlorophyllin all repair damaged genes and have subsequently been linked to lowering blood pressure, maintaining proper blood flow, body immunity and bone mineralisation from the vitamin K in spinach. Being a rich source of beta carotene, lutein and xanthenes spinach also offers a real benefit for eye health. One of the most impressive factors is the link to preventing heart attacks. Atherosclerosis is caused by the hardening of arteries yet a pigment found in spinach has been shown to reduce the occurrence of this,

Perhaps not the tastiest fruit in the world but half a grapefruit alone has over 100mg of fresh vitamin C in a form that your body appreciates over manufactured pills. Being available all year round try to incorporate grapefruits into a regime that works for you; with breakfast, an afternoon snack or before dinner to aid with digestion. This brings us nicely onto grapefruit’s acidic properties. The natural acids aid digestion and become a powerful liver tonic, the perfect friend for the morning after you partied too hard or had one too many glasses of wine. Grapefruits also help dissolve in-organic calcium that may have developed around your joints this is thanks to their organic salicylic acid. A perfect remedy if you have arthritis or joint pain in the family – recommend a grapefruit and start preventing similar in yourself. Incredibly important in this argument, grapefruits are rich in lycopene (this forms the pink/red pigment) as well as limonoids. These are elements that help prevent the occurrence of cancer. These two compounds can be difficult to find in other fruits but are in abundance in grapefruits. Grapefruits are also one of the many super foods that are high in fiber with very few calories (a half grapefruit is only about 40 calories, usually a little less). The amazing thing about grapefruit is that it’s one of the Tip: If you need to overcome the bitter taste of this fruit we recommend mixing small segments into fruit salads to diminish the set taste. Or fight through the pain barrier 30 times or more and you’ll become accustomed to it soon enough.

Whole grains We often hear the phrase ‘whole grains’; we see it in advertising campaigns, in the press and on bread labels itself, but it’s good to understand what a whole grain is and why it’s beneficial to you. A grain can only be considered whole when all three components (the bran, germ and endosperm) are present. When all three work together they offer an abundance of antioxidants and phytochemicals and the surprise is that this is more than some fruit and vegetables. Whole grains are one of the top sources for B vitamins, vitamin E, iron and of course fiber. You may have thought them boring but it’s time to remember that the basic goodness of whole grains are crucial to everyday living. They are one of the more simple foods to incorporate so don’t delay, it can be found in brown rice, whole oats, oatmeal, rye bread and whole wheat. Time to pay respect to the whole grain once more.

Coconut Rihanna has paid homage to the benefits of coconut water even becoming brand representative of Vita Coca. So what do you need to know? Coconut milk contains five electrolyters (potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium and phosphorus) all spot-on for brain operation, muscle movement and nerve transmission. There are only 20 calories per drink, it boasts being fat free, cholesterol free and to give you natural energy. This ‘natural sports drink from a tree not a lab’ ethos has hit stateside and is going down very well as

we seem to becoming more conscious of what we put inside our bodies. Coconut water oozes with amino acids, antioxidants and cytokinins, the latter a plant growth substance needed for repair and playing a vital role in human health, with scientists believing it slows the ageing process and lowers the risk of cancer. Madonna and Demi Moore are all devotees. In fact Madonna loves it so much she bought a company that makes it. It is thinner in consistency that your average milk, with only 0.25oz of sugar and just a trace of fat in 100ml serving. Now that there are brands such as Vita Coco we don’t have to climb the tree to try a little so there’s no excuse not to incorporate coconut water into your daily diet.

Try: Edamene beans Edamame is another name for pods of the soybean plant. It’s a complete protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. An essential amino acid refers to amino acids that are not produced by the body and must be added through diet. Edamame is also high in fiber, essential fatty acids, and a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, potassium and phosphorus so a perfect snack throughout the day should the hunger strikes try to take over!

Power of Wheatgrass

scientists swear by the wonderproduct. Did you know that one ounce of Wheatgrass juice has as much nutritional value as 2 ½ pounds of green vegetables? It's packed with vitamins, minerals and amino acids; all the essentials to keep your body balanced and at optimum health. Taking Wheatgrass juice regularly holds so many incredible benefits; more energy, increased mental alertness, increased stamina, cleansing the body of toxins, rebuilding the blood stream and improved digestion. Wheatgrass juice is also 70% chlorophyll, which is great for the liver. Research outlines that there are enormous positive effects from adding chlorophyll into the human diet; not only because chlorophyll is hard to find in many foods, but it is extremely powerful in decreasing the likelihood of colon cancer in particular. So what makes Wheatgrass juice so amazing? Opposed to so much of the food we consume today it is a ‘live’ food that the body loves and can absorb fully. Most of the fruit and vegetables we buy today lack the nutrients they had 50 years ago, and while vitamin supplements have their benefits, they are made in a laboratory and don’t match the natural state of nutrients provided by live foods. Wheatgrass is rich in vitamins B, C, E, carotene, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and many important enzymes. If you're planning a detox at the start of the year make sure you include Wheatgrass in your plan - just give it a go for two weeks. We have just started and feel great! The one negative: It tastes pretty awful Wheatgrass can be found in the majority of health food stores, such as any Holland and Barrett across Dorset, Earth Foods in Southborne, or support a local health shop near you.

You may have heard about Wheatgrass being extremely good for you but not tried it for yourself, nor never understood why health addicts and

prevail skatehouse

In this life we all have dreams but very few actually take the decision to follow them or at least take them on. One local man however decided to do just that. Being an avid skater since a teenager and now as a 'grown up' he looked around and thought it disappointing that the only large indoor skate park for people in our area is an hour and a half away, at least. Spending his life savings on this mission he began building Poole's very first skate park, Prevail Skate House, back in September 2012. £100k worth of wood, hundreds of hours of labour and just before Christmas it opened to the public with a soft launch and competition. From foam pits to bars and jumps, Prevail Skate House is an impressive bit of work and superb for our area. Young and old, fans and newbies will relish in this new opportunity to have a place to skate, bmx, blade or scoot. For fans this is a place of dreams. It’s a seriously impressive warehouse setting and an ideal place to improve your skills. We salute people taking on new projects and defying the recession trying to make personal goals a reality! Not just on a personal level but this is something very awesome for our area and we say support should go their way. See you at the Skate Park! SNOW &PISTE 18 | Issue 3

S

ki season is upon us and don’t be fooled by reports that the snow isn’t great this year because we’ve heard direct from our sources that the snow in the Alps is better than they’ve experienced in five.

two glaciers and reaches 3660m so you just imagine the snow it receives. As a result of the glaciers you can ski 365 days a year; it’s no wonder it has become one of the best ski resorts in Europe! You can enjoy 300m of pistes and trails and 90 modern ski lifts in addition to two snow parks that are too much fun and you must give a go!

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to the slopes, taking up skiing or snowboarding is a hobby that once tried you are fixed, hooked, addicted and gain a whole new sense of perspective speeding down a snow capped mountain really makes you feel at one with not only nature but yourself. We've talked to some of the professionals’during ski-season and here is our hot list of some of the finest resorts on offer.

In L'Espace Killy you can ski over 1600m of altitude difference by descending from Grande Motte to Val d'Isère; the pistes are well cared for here so it’s very pleasurable to ski or board on. Some runes are so immense that sometimes you'll need an hour to ski along them. In fact some skiers say these are the best in Europe because of special educational SPOT zones where you can practise off-piste skiing under controlled conditions. There is also good news for the beginners: some ski lifts are at their disposal for free, or if you prefer your pistes extreme, don't miss Le Face, so all in all a perfect all-rounder.

1. ZERMATT Some say it is one of the finest resorts in the Swiss Alps. Zermatt is surrounded by dramatic peaks of some of Europe’s highest mountains, including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Dom. This allows for some adventurous, exciting skiing as the landscape is detailed, captivating and rugged, keeping you on your toes at all times. Zermatt is a very special place as it is a world without electric cars (you can drive to the base of the mountain but then have to leave your car for train to the resort) and from then on it’s a place of electric-golf buggies and horse-drawn sleighs. This is the only transport allowed. This in mind it’s a peaceful place that makes you feel right at the heart of an old town in the cosy white peaks. Access to the slopes wherever you stay is easy enough and you have access to 350km of pistes overall. There’s a real charm to Zermatt with its traditional buildings, churches and beautiful scenery. If you want to feel like you’re on top of the world and sometimes be on slopes that feel like they are only yours, Zermatt is worth it.

2. COURCHEVEL A world class ski resort adored by ski fanatics the world over. Immaculate pistes and stunning scenery spread over four levels from the lowest point at 1300m to the highest at 1850m. This is a resort filled with fine hotels and top class eateries. Be sure to try one of the traditional French restaurants serving up fondue, homemade breads and enough meat and cheese to satisfy you for the next year. Courchevel is one of the trendiest resorts too, boasting designer boutiques and swanky nightclubs. It’s a firm favourite of the Russians and has endless choices when it comes to eating out, après-ski and social events for friends, families, couples, you name it. Expect to find ample skiing and snowboarding terrain that includes off-piste, open treeless powder bowls, mogul runs and cliff drops to add a little extra danger to your run. The efficient ski system here is one to help everyone from beginners to the more accustomed so don’t fret, beginners will truly enjoy the set up. Put simply, what’s not to love about this place? Courchevel makes our top three without doubt.

3. VAL D’ISERE An all time favourite with snow lovers and first-timers. From arriving in Val d’isere you will be hooked. The resort itself is combined with Tignes (another legendary resort) so here you get the best of both worlds as it forms ‘L’Espace Killy.’ Overall it covers

AUTOBOX Audi’s halo model, the iconic R8, gets its mid-life makeover. With a host of improvements to make it even more desirable than ever, and a fantastic new addition to head the range, let us introduce the Audi R8 V10 plus this New Year. Innovative new features, such as the new sweeping rear indicator lights and newdesign all-LED headlights, are combined with the introduction of the optional S tronic transmission, available for the first time on the R8. The new attributes bring a new level of excitement to the line-up of the Audi and remind Audi fans and sport car lovers why the R8 is no car to be messed with. The new model was unveiled at the Moscow Motorshow at the end of August 2012, followed by another showing at the Paris Motorshow in September. Immediate changes are the design and styling of the interior and exterior. The new R8 range has been enhanced to give it an even more dynamic appearance and refined interior. There’s new Audi signature single-frame radiator grille with bevelled upper corners, improved instrument cluster design, gear knob with high-gloss top, aluminium surround on steering wheel with improved

gear shift paddles, new-design rear diffuser on both V8 and V10 and a new R8 badge. So what does it all mean? This R8 is enhanced, technically and aesthetically. The new R8 V10 plus sets a new standard at the top of the range, and provides pure driving pleasure. It is lighter and faster than the R8 V10, reinforcing its claim to be a real driver's car. Power has been boosted from 525PS to 550PS and weight has been reduced through a number of measures, including the use of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bucket seats, carbonfibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) elements (including the front spoiler lip and rear diffuser) and powerful ceramic brakes as standard. For the first time, the 7-speed S tronic gearbox will be available on the Audi R8. The new S tronic gearbox is another highlight of the revised R8, combining exceptionally smooth and sport-oriented gear changes with improved fuel efficiency and lowered CO2 emissions. This innovative dual-clutch transmission changes gear in a few hundredths of a second, with virtually no interruption in power flow. One clutch engages the odd-numbered gears and the other the even-numbered for smooth,

uninterrupted shifts. S tronic replaces the previous R tronic transmission, leading to a 10 per cent improvement in C02 and fuel efficiency. Audi expect the new S tronic to be exceptionally popular, with 85 per cent of customers choosing this gearbox option. Audi UK will allocate build positions based on national dates of interest, meaning that customers who are added to the register of interest at the earliest date will receive the earliest build position when the order is placed. This data will also be used to communicate with the customers.

ur model Betty Jacobsson hails from Sweden and landed into the world of modelling due to her step-mum being a former model scout. Her look is obvious; those cheek bones, mesmerising eyes and pure skin are enough to make anyone stop and look. She’s been modelling for two years and has worked on some impressive campaigns. The recent Boo Hoo TV advert and various fashion lines showcase her talents, attitude and style. Team Box play Creative Director and our official photographer is Simon Ackerman who has photographed at New York, Paris and London Fashion Week on some of the finest runway shows. To create the model’s look we needed a make-up artist and hair stylist; let us introduce Rosie Cersio and local talent Alaina Salisbury. Rosie developed dark, alluring eye make-up, with crystals to complete the intrigue and rock chic edge. To create this look Rosie explains; For the Eyes - Use Nars eye-primer to intensify eye colours and to stop the colour from creasing overall. Apply Bobbi Brown's cream eye colour in Galaxy as a base colour then use fingers or synthetic cream shadow brush and blend the outside edge with a tapered brush to avoid harsh lines. I then applied one of Nars eye colour palettes and used the black shadow on the crease of the eye. This was applied with an angled brush and blended with the tapered brush. You can created a wing effect with both of the brushes; an angled brush to apply colour and then the tapered brush to blend. Always blend towards end of eyebrow for a good wing eye effect. I also used a silver eye shadow from the palette and added lightly with my finger on the inner lid of the eye. Following this I used a blue MAC shadow above to add a pop of colour. Use any highlighter (white shimmer powder or illuminator) on the brow bone. Bobbi Brown black gel liner to add definition and lashes/ mascara. Essential Item – For me, this would my tapered brush as I use this brush for everything! Without it it’d be a lot harder to add softness to the intense colours used in this fashion shoot. I use a MAC tapered brush. Highlight of my career so far – I would have to say helping out with make-up for The Wanted for Loose Women was amazing. I assist celebrity make-up artist Gemma Aldous who provides me with great experiences on TV shows and shoot Rosie has worked as a make-up artist for The Wanted, various celebrities for TV shows and endless fashion retailers for national campaigns and shoots. Creating the hair style for our look was exciting to watch take shape, as Alaina explains; "My favourite thing when creating a hair style like this is combining textures, sleek and smooth and big and bouncy

were an example of the looks I wanted to create on this particular shoot. It's very easy to have "messed up rock hair/ bed hair" but the trick is to keep it looking intentional. I set the hair firstly using the O roller system; it's slightly more pricey but worth every penny compared to what you might find on the high street. Setting the hair is a top tip of mine as it gives you the ability to easily mould the hair into different form with the added bend the rollers give you. I then sectioned off the centre top section of the hair as this was to be the height and "quiff" focal point of the end look. Starting at the crown, take sections of the hair horizontally and back comb slowly (this is another tip as if you do it quickly you will just brush out what you have put in) work section by section until you have only about an inch wide piece left at the front, this is the piece that will go over the back combing to keep it looking neat! Once you have the top part looking tall leave it to set and it's best to work on each side next. Take a soft bristle brush and smooth each section into the palm of your hand, at the same time spray hairspray directly onto the sides to keep it as neat and smooth as you can get it. Fasten the smooth edge with grips vertically down the back of the head and repeat on the other side. It is then up to you what you choose to do with the excess hair; I have in this case left it in the centre to continue the textured rock-chic look. However you could gather into a smooth pony tail.. Next go back to the top section and smooth over the front piece that you left out earlier, brush back to cover the back combing and again set with hair spray. It is up to you how big you think you can get away with the top being but be brave, have fun and experiment! Products used were the O hair amplifying spray (nice because it is light weight and offers heat protection) Good old Elnette hair spray which gives you great ability to brush it out just layer it up to give good hold I also used Moroccan oil to smooth fly always and give a high sheen finish for the photo" Look complete, Betty started working the camera with direction from Simon. She is a natural. The biker jacket, courtesy of Zsa Zsa boutique in Westbourne, is being worked to its full potential by Betty. The angles and textured, raised shoulders compliment this look entirely. Our model is amazing; her eyes engage with the camera and she is in control and fierce. She is the ultimate rock chic lifestyle girl, out at London parties and on the London circuit every night of the week, at a showbiz party or luxury event, or two.

Everyone worked so hard on this fashion shoot so a big thank you to you all. We think the pictures say a thousand words.

Dr Lowe's Dark Circles Correcting Cream A hectic season may have left you feeling tired and drained but there’s no reason why your eyes should give you away! Dr Lowe's Dark Circles Correcting Cream is an advanced formula containing lighteners, tighteners, peptides and illuminating, light reflecting particles to improve puffiness and dark circles. STYLEBOX The synergy experience The ‘Synergy’ experience is something very special. No superfluous words or over-zealous descriptions needed here, just the truth. We recently enjoyed a couple of hours relaxing in their Poole salon and our time spent there could not have been better. That's a big statement from us as often there is a little something we'd alter or change with businesses but not with Synergy. First impressions count for everything and you're greeted with the warmest of welcomes on arrival. It's a genuine heartfelt 'hello' that stays with you and makes you love everyone and everything at Synergy. The special thing is that it's not just who's looking after you that day; it's the salon owner and directors too; they all want to catch up on your news and check you are being looked after - an amazing personal touch. After discussing what we were going to do with my hair I next had my hair washed in a comfortable massage chair. Big and indulgent it made me relax, which I don't normally do; I find the sinks and angle you're placed at so tedious and uncomfortable so to be comfy AND massaged was a true blessing. You can operate the chair yourself and take it from us you'll be in heaven. You will not want to leave the chair and you will want to try all the settings; a little bit of pure luxury for a hair salon! Kerastese products are being used on my hair and they not only smell like you could eat them but we noticed better conditioned hair for the next six days so something must have been in the bottle that my tired, dry hair required. Emma who is my hair stylist is as expert and professional as they come. We’re neatening up the length today and styling with layers adding texture, volume and attitude in the way its finished. I’m so at ease with Synergy and I trust my stylist implicitly. I ask questions about my look and ask for advice on a side-sweeping fringe. Honest, professional advice is really valued so discussing my look with Emma is key. She talks me through her thoughts and I love the modern touch of handing me an iPad to look at images she has. I appreciate honest advice and love that Emma is helping me decide how short to go with the fringe and how to keep it balanced with the rest of my hair. Synergy treats you like a star in your own right. They’re courteous, generous, friendly and know the hair industry inside out. They love creating looks, working closely with the individual and staying ahead of trends. They adore seeing clients leave with a huge smile knowing they have hair exactly how they envisaged and more. My stylist is testament to this as my hair is looking amazing; long and luscious how I wanted with relaxed curls. On leaving I am asked to pick a card from a glass bowl on the counter and it holds a thought for a day, which is the best leaving present. We embrace positive thinking at The Box and have never seen a salon do this before – what an amazing way to shine inside and out. I have miracle hair, feel like Cheryl Cole and want to ‘swoosh’ it, plus have a positive omen to take on the day ahead too! You can find Synergy in Blandford, Poole and Ashley Cross, or look online at www.synergyhairdressing.com

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day so try Caff in Sandbanks this New Year

SURE AS EGGS IS EGGS dishes you demolish because every little bit taster superb. There’s personality thrown in with the specialist, locally sourced pork and leak sausage. Everything is wholesome and warming on this cold day and you can tell each part has really been thought about in terms of taste and quality. It’s not a rushed job here; even the cooked tomatoes taste so much better than we’ve had in a long time. If my colleague’s reaction and consequent treatment of this breakfast is anything to go by, it didn’t last long on the plate and everything was eaten without question or hesitation, so we know the full English gets full marks. Guys know their full English breakfasts and to so to hear this was ‘amazing’ we think says it all. My choice of two eggs (cooked how you like) on granary toast not only tasted delightful but I didn’t feel too unhealthy either; often something we have to think about post-Christmas. I go for poached and they are scrumptious. Both light and fluffy with the soft centre. They taste hearty and proper and we like the locally sourced angle. Everything is cooked on the hob and in the open-kitchen area and it’s the epitome of simple food done extremely well. This place has that Cafe Shore style but kept to traditional cafe roots. They have some amazing USPs; some surprised us and made us love the place even more. Imagine seeing hot buttered crumpets, American

t’s a sunny day in Sandbanks and we’re excited to try out one of the latest editions - ‘Caff’ - which has been creating a serious buzwz around the Peninsula and beyond. Formerly Le Cafe, this site has been revamped to a trendy, upmarket cafe, serving breakfast, lunch and house specials throughout the day. Small yet done very well, Caff is cosy and smart; no greasy dishes in sight and it’s nice to see some quality brought back to cafe culture. We sit in a booth which is a great space for my colleague and I. Here we peruse the menu and get over-excited about the choices; everything looks tempting and we’re going to be pushed to decide we already know. This is shortly proven in that we have to send our waitress away twice as we need more time to decide. Eventually, whilst sipping on a gorgeous latte and cup of tea, we order. The menu offers real fruit smoothies, ice cream shakes, sandwiches, toasties and house favourites such as chicken club sandwiches, jackets and the ultimate ‘Caff’ burger. You read the menu and feel satisfied; it’s not trying to be something it’s not. The choices are hearty and tasty, covering everything you’d expect (but often don’t get) in a good cafe. In addition, the menu shines with that unique homemade feel and there is just the right amount of choices to suit whatever mood you’re in. As we’re still talking about the greatness of the menu our individual choices arrive. The full English breakfast is hearty and presented well. It’s one of those

pancakes, granola and yoghurt (which you can’t get in many places to order as a breakfast) and even Nutella jars on every table – what a touch – as options. We are told the nutella goes down very well with kids and big kids, like us. When we taste the pancakes they are incredible, truly. They are not paying us to say this - these are the ultimate taste sensation. We’d never had pancakes with bacon, berry compote and strawberries before. The outcome? Off the chart in taste and character. We thought the sweet and savoury an odd mix in the beginning but they blend so well and you will be fighting over the last pancake take it from us. We personally didn’t realise bacon with pancakes could taste so good, but it does. If you need a New Year’s Resolution to start off the year in the right way then make a breakfast at Caff it. Perfectly situated and perfectly executed; welcome back the proper breakfast.

LUCKY NO.33 - XENI BERISHA Lee Williams talks to restaurant entrepreneur Xeni Berisha about his new enterprise in Canford Cliffs named 33, Xeni has been priviledged anough to work under Gordon Ramsey so knows his stuff What is the philosophy behind 33 and your style of cooking here? I believe in simplicity and good quality ingredients – fresh, local, seasonal and full of flavour. The ingredients must do the talking. What can customers expect from 33? Well first of all they should walk in and feel warm and welcome. Then when they sit down to eat they should expect traditional, seasonal dishes but with a personal twist. What is a typical dish that customers can expect for this time of year? I think this is going to be a big hit – pork belly with red cabbage, apples and raisins served with mustard mash and cider sauce. It’s absolutely gorgeous! Pork belly can put people off but if you cook it properly, it’s absolutely delicious. What three things would sum up 33? Simplicity, welcome and good food. The welcome is just as important as the food by the way. If you walk in somewhere and you don’t feel welcome or warm, you don’t want to eat. You worked under Gordon Ramsay. Is he the same in real life as on TV? He’s exactly the same. He wants the best and the head chefs that work for him have the same mentality. You have to give 100%. When I worked for Gordon I had just come out of catering college. It was long hours and very difficult but I wanted the experience and I wanted to learn. Did Gordon give you any good advice? Mostly about simplicity. Gordon doesn’t do messy things- just quick, bang, flavours, that’s it. In terms of running a restaurant he taught me that everyone must be responsible for their own work but also be part of the team.

You also worked for Raymond Blanc. How was that? He’s a real gentleman. The nicest man you could ever wish to meet. I worked for him for a year and a half and I never once heard him raise his voice. His kitchen was always completely under control and everyone gave him 110% because they respected him. What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you in your career? Be honest and give customers the best value for money. That was Raymond. How long has 33 been in the making? Once I decided to open my own restaurant, I knew I had to find the right location – somewhere where people appreciate good food. It took me six months just to find a property that felt right in an area that felt right. After that it took another five and half months of legal stuff and red tape but we eventually got there. Before 33 you had the Coffee House Cafe in Boscombe. How was your time there? I was there for seven years. I used to roast my own coffee twice a week. The smell on the high street was unbelievable! Even bus drivers used to stop there to smell the aroma. We did breakfasts and lunches and we used to change the menu every week. People used to come and ask me what I was planning for next week’s menu. What are your hopes and goals for the future? For 33, I just hope people enjoy it and want to come again and that will give me satisfaction. Money isn’t as important for me as making people happy and having a good reputation.

P MONEY F

MASTER OF THE MIC

rom first meeting him he’s an avid prankster, joker and loves a good laugh. He’s got raw talent and is massive on the British music scene. 2013 is to be a ridiculously good for him so who is behind the music, what does the ‘Money’ part stand for, how did he come to tour with Example and what’s the best bit of music advice he’s been given. Say hello to P Money Paris, how did you start in music? Listening to Dizzee Rascal and Neutrino made me want to get into it but I wasn't taught by anyone it was a natural talent. Who is P Money to the outside world? He's like the best MC in the WORLD! OK naa I joke I get described as a grime MC, a clever one able to mix dubstep and grime together with a unique flow and raw hard hitting punchlines. I'm down to earth with songs we all can relate to. Not your everyday rapper. And to your friends? The funny guy who takes a century when shopping, shares his success, has a crazy car, offers great advice when asked, always busy but such a blessing when time is made. I'm like the coolest friend anyone could have to be honest.

doing and they have a lot of backing behind them. I think major labels sometimes ruin things when they take control it doesn't allow the artist to experience what I have. You are touring with Example this year – how ready are you to hit the mainstream? What can we expect from the tour and yourself? The tour will release a new P Money show, new music and a new look. I'm also planning on making a brand in time for the tour too so watch out for that it's going to be MAD! What’s your interpretation of the changing music world? What have been some of the biggest changes over the past few years in your opinion? Do you feel more attention is now given to independent, underground artists? I think people in high places are recruiting BETTER AnR's who know what real good talent is. There's so much in the UK now. Everyone is becoming smarter even the artists themselves are releasing better tracks and choosing wisely when it comes to music and songs. I just hope we all have the success we have here in other countries like America too. Sick of them coming here and we buy their music like crazy and spend so much to see them perform but don't get the same kind of love when we go over there. You’ve toured with British rapper Wretch 32 and American DJ Alvin

Why are you called P Money exactly? My real name is Paris which is where the P is from and money was the motive when I was younger I just had a knack for making it. Whether it buying and selling or just doing something i know people would invest in. I'm good with money

Risk, did you have an opinion of these guys before you met them? I didn't know of Alvin Risk but he's a cool guy man and does his thing, I knew of Wretch a while before his success through Grime, He's always been a down to earth cool guy, he's performances are sick there's only one Wretch.

In a business sense, what moment or decision do you think has got

Do you have a typical routine for the day? Nope. It's mad I seem to plan my day in my dream. My day starts when I wake up and I just know what I'm doing whether it be the gym, writing, recording or going shopping.

you to where you are today? Probably when I worked with a PR called Sian Anderson, she taught me a lot when it comes to the business side of things in music. She still does a lot for other people, and works for a big label now and has her own company 'Sigh tracked'. If I never made that decision I don't think I wouldn't be here I just think it would have taken SUPER long. What projects are you working on currently? Can you share some secrets with Box readers?! I'm working getting a new car a Nissan GTR... No I'm joking again! I'm working my first ever album. It features Lady Leeshur, Sam Frank and Ayah Marah so far. Secrets would be me also working with Example, Bauuer maybe even Skrillex. You’ve performed at some amazing festivals and with some great people, how does it make you feel as an independent artist that you have been booked to perform at such events? Feels good to be proof that you can do it without an Album and without a major label. I'm doing shows some artist aren't even

What’s something you couldn’t live without? Women!!!…..I joke I joke I can't live without music an instagram. Won't lie instagram has me right now every time I see something cool I’m like bam instragram it, but yeah music is my life overall. Best bit of business advice you’ve been given? Listen to me. I'm always right and don't go against me. Who you look up to? My mother, neutrino and Dizzee Rascal

DO YOU KNOW YOUR ART? Emma Moir, founder of Box Galleries, ‘The Moving Exhibition’ talks to The Box Magazine about how to buy contemporary artwork. There is no apparent recession in the art world; dealers and auctioneers are booming and at the end of last year a record broken when a single painting sold for £21 million. It’s an interesting and colourful world so what must one look out for when ‘art shopping’; here’s what we discovered from talking to Box Galleries. There are many different reasons for buying artwork. You might be buying to decorate a new house; to invest; to have something to hand down to your children; as a symbol of status; to remind yourself of a place or memory; or purely because you have fallen in love with it. But the question remains, do you know your art? How much research

42 | Issue 3

should you do before buying artwork, if any? And is there any REAL meaning to the value of art? There are various versions of artwork and it is important you know what you are buying. The original is a one off piece of artwork, comes straight from the artist’s studio and is signed by the artist. Open Edition prints are near enough posters and can be re-printed easily. The idea of producing limited edition reproduction prints is a great way for artists to make their art more widely available at lower prices, and increasing their collector bases by offering affordable alternatives to more expensively priced originals. The lower the number of copies the better, and if you can get an AP (Artists Proof) then this is generally more valuable. The number on the piece is the number of prints that have

been made and this should be signed by the artist. An Embellished limited edition print has been touched up by the artist/understudy after it has been printed in order to give some idea of texture (essentially to make it more like the original). However, this is still not a painting that has been painted wholly by the artist. If possible, go for an original painting that you like, even from an emerging artist, rather than a print if you have the choice. The originality of a painting can be crucial, particularly in its worth and, at a higher level amongst established artists, its importance in the art world. The BBC’s recent second series of ‘Fake or Fortune’ examines the provenance or attribution of notable

TOP TIPS ON BUYING ARTWORK 1. Make sure you have built a

relationship with an art consultant or dealer that you can trust. Many art collectors have dedicated dealers who fly around the world building their collection.

2. Try to get a certificate of

authenticity/valuation from the gallery or dealer.

3. Do not attempt to buy artwork

to match furnishings of a room – it might not work with your surroundings in the long term.

4. Go with your instinct – find

artworks such as Turner and Degas. Is a small painting of a ballerina worth £200 or half a million pounds? These mysteries go back many years, scholars, countries and journeys, but the principle remains when buying contemporary artwork; if artwork can be accused of being fake, painted by another hand, painted over, or a copy, it is a good idea to know where it came from and get some proof of authenticity above anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to know everything about the artist in order to make an informed judgement on buying artwork. It is useful to know their standing or position in the market ie. are they emerging, award-winning or represented by big galleries, but this is not always essential. There are many incredibly talented artists

in Cornwall for example that may not necessarily be represented in a London Mayfair gallery but this nonetheless makes them no less worthy or talented. DID YOU KNOW… An artist does not have to be deceased for his/her work to be valuable - Damien Hurst anybody? Just last month, German artist Gerhard Richter sold a painting for £21million – an auction record for a work by a LIVING artist - pretty impressive. Many people say, ‘the price of art is what someone is willing to pay for it’. This is true to an extent but there has to be some set principles, guidelines and rules that are used in the art world to create legitimacy and creditability. As Christie’s will maintain, this is a multi-million pound business which in

something that connects with you not just something that is within the current trends.

many ways has barely been dented by the recession. In 2012, Christie’s sold £2.2billion in art during the first half of the year – up 13% from the same period last year. Rothko’s ‘Orange, Red, Yellow’ sold for $86.9 million in May in New York, an ‘unprecedented sale’ according to Christie’s. Auction houses are booming, commercial galleries are growing, independent galleries are growing, pop up galleries like Box Galleries are growing. There certainly is meaning to the value of art and this is unlikely to change. Business or pleasure, art will remain. Box Galleries represents a variety of contemporary artists and holds pop up exhibitions in London and on the South Coast. Please see www.boxgalleries.com

CHARITYBOX

THIS MONTH

We take a look at a unique and very special charity that now has links to Bournemouth too...

Litre of light

How many bottles of water does it take to light a room? No it’s not a joke. The answer is: just one. It’s true; just one litre bottle of water fixed to the roof can light up an entire windowless room during daylight hours. What’s more, this miraculous ‘bottled light’ is being installed in thousands of poor homes around the world by international charity Litre of Light, which just happens to be coming to the UK, via Bournemouth. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world live in such poverty that their dwellings have no windows or electricity. They effectively live in darkness, even during the daytime. Litre of Light solves this problem with bottled water alone; something so simple yet so effective. How do they do this? Simply by fixing the bottle into a hole in the roof. The water refracts the sunlight entering through the ceiling and spreads it around the room, generating the equivalent brightness of a 55 watt bulb. The only difference is that this form of lighting is cheap to install, utterly free to run, completely renewable and has no harmful effects on the environment. This is the simple technology that forms Litre of Light’s ethos and they aim to bring it to one million homes around the world by 2015. The story of Litre of Light is one that hops around the globe before eventually landing, in the present day, in Bournemouth. The technique, of turning bottles of water effectively into ‘light bulbs’, was first invented by a group of students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in America. From there the idea was taken up by a charitable organisation in the Philippines called MyShelter Foundation, which uses new green technologies to help the poor. The Philippines project brought the technology to 28,000 homes and 70,000 people in Manila alone. It is through Colombia that the story comes to Bournemouth. Early on in 2012 24-year-old Colombian industrial engineer called Alejandro Clavijo saw Litre of Light’s YouTube video. Somewhat sceptical that poor people could really be living in such dark conditions during daylight hours, Alejandro decided to visit a poor district of Bogota to find out for himself. What he found there shocked him into believing and becoming committed to the cause. Alejandro quit his job and got in touch with Litre of Light Colombia. He then decided to come to the UK to kill two birds with one stone – to improve his English and to set up Litre of Light UK. He is currently studying English at Bournemouth and Poole College in Lansdowne where he gives regular talks on Litre of Light projects. Thanks to his work, the international trail that leads to Bournemouth might not stop here but may create strong links

between the Dorset seaside town and a tiny island off the north coast of Colombia. Santa Cruz Del Islote, is officially the world’s most crowded island with over 1,200 inhabitants living on just one hundred square metres of land. The island, which is a two-hour boat ride from the popular tourist destination of Cartagena, is so crowded that people have to walk through each other’s kitchens to get around. The town square is the size of a tennis court and residents have to go to neighbouring islands to bury their dead or even kick a ball around. Naturally, in such cramped conditions, there is a lack of lighting even in the daytime, especially because the island’s electricity generators only work at night. He wants to find volunteers to set up and run Litre of Light UK. According to Alejandro: “The goal is to empower the people, to teach the people how to create this form of lighting for themselves. With help from the UK we can bring light to the homes of thousands of poor people in Colombia and the rest of the world.” You can follow Litre of Light UK at www.facebook.com/ litreoflightuk or the main organisation at aliteroflight.org.

SOCIALBOX

THIS MONTH

Social Box takes a look at various events in the area. Launches, parties & more. It's VIP all the way

RICHMOND CLASSICS SOIREE The fashion boutique that has been a Bournemouth institution since 1988 put on their winter social last month to bring together, by invitation only, the movers and shakers of Bournemouth for an evening of fashion, music, canapés and bubbles. The store was overcome with friendly faces who had turned up to enjoy 15% off on the night. Beats were provided by PRIVA’s own Max, gorgeous canapés by Koh Thai and hair consultancies by Level Hair. It was

great to see all these businesses form part of the event. The discount on the evening went down very well and the ladies store of Richmond Classics stocks some superb brands from Vivenne Westwood to Juicy Couture, Ugg and Jeffrey Campbell. Make it your New Year’s resolution to pop into Richmond Classics and happy shopping.

CHARMEDBYMICHAELMATTHEWS Without doubt, Michael Matthews on Westover Road is one of our favourites. A watch and jewellery store that houses collections from Links of London, Toy Watches, Pandora, Thomas Sabo and Follie Follie. As soon as you walk in the door you are spoilt for choice on which glowing cabinet to look in first. This night was to celebrate its official re-launch and unique product offering - Michael Matthews are the only retailer in the UK to stock the new Italian brand Zancan.

The amazing Liz Lean PR organised live music, canapés from Koh Thai and a satisfying supply of Champagne to all guests. It was a brilliant turn out and a thoroughly enjoyable evening all round; so great to see so many friendly faces. Michael Matthews is open from Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm, and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

STATE OF THE ART GOLF The Frost Golf Performance Studio is a state-of-the-art indoor coaching facility at the popular Parley Golf Centre. with over 50 elite level amateur golfers and aspiring professionals. His decision to open a second golf performance studio in Dorset comes alongside his appointment as Dorset County Performance Coach. He will be working with the Dorset men’s First Team, Under 18s and Under 16s squads throughout 2013.

ROCK OPENS IN WESTBOURNE We love it when a new place to dine opens in town, and so a big warm welcome goes to Rock restaurant in Westbourne! The Rock restaurants’ ethos is to serve modern British food in relaxed and contemporary environments and they do just that at the Westbourne site. It has a genuinely nice feel and the staff are so friendly! Plus we admire that all their ingredients are locally sourced

and produce is prepared in-house by Michelin-star trained chefs. The launch was an exciting evening filled with those who had turned up intrigued by the new place and what it has to offer. Customers can enjoy fine food and wine at Rock so make sure you give it a try this New Year; take it from us you won’t regret it.

LOBSTER AND BURGER WestBeach opened its doors to an exciting fanfare for all-new, tasty Thursday night, Lobster & Burger. It’s a simple yet perfectly orchestrated night, bringing something different to the beach side dining experience we know and love. As the name suggests for £20 guests chose between a whole lobster or burger for their evening’s entree. Tables sold out instantly which is a highly positive sign for WestBeach trying something new. The idea originates from

London, and the guy actually originates from Bournemouth, so there’s a great link between businesses. The night has received two impressive followers; former England goal-keep David James and AFCB’s own Steve Fletcher who were ambassadors on the night. We already can’t wait for the next sitting of Lobster & Burger which takes place on 31st January and 27th February.

Happy Birthday to Mane Street Salon and say hello to Aphrodite in Westbourne...!

Celebrating 30 Years in the Industry We’re sure by now you are all aware of Mane Street. The salon that has made a serious impression on the Bournemouth and Dorset scene for its immaculate service, beautiful salons and engaging staff. This 2013 they celebrate 30 years of being an industry leader. We all know the elements that make a good salon but Mane Street bring that extra ‘je ne sais quoi’ and those extra little details to the table that make every experience with them perfect and most professional. We recently caught up with Salon Director and Owner, Andrew Bell, and immediately you’re drawn in to his professionalism and positive attitude. At Mane Street they’ve developed a first class team of hairdressers who specialise in the very best colouring, styling and techniques to the highest standards. When it comes to cutting hair Andrew and his team really come into their own as they believe you’re only as good as your last haircut so they strive to make every single cut and strand the best it can be! Using the very finest products Mane Street deliver the very best contemporary hairdressing services and ones that are to not be rivalled by many. The salons are chic,

god bless aphrodite! There is no wonder this salon in Westbourne is named after the God of love; from when you arrive you can’t help but fall in love with this salon and its staff. The Body Sculpting Cellulite and Colon Therapy treatment is one that hails from beauty Gods Elemis. The treatment we’re enjoying focuses on the circulatory and lymphatic system, incorporating specialist colon cleansing massage techniques on the stomach. From first entering the salon we are in heaven; so thrilled to be trying out this unique treatment. Our therapist is ridiculously knowledgeable and as lovely as they come. Using ingredients such as Peru Liana and bitter orange petal (which aids with drainage of toxins) the treatment combines a full body exfoliation, massage, wrap and head massage. The purpose is to stimulate circulation, bring oxygen to the surface of the skin, decrease any build up of waste and

toxins and improve the look and texture of any uneven, cellulite stricken parts of the body. The sculpting Lipo-Refining Serum is put onto the problem areas using a specialised massage technique and extra pressure applied to work the skin and drain away any excess fluid. The serum mixed with the bespoke technique feels like your skin is really being worked out. Those areas that hardly get any attention are now being kneaded and fatty deposits relieved. Next comes the pounding of your thighs to encourage fat cells to break down; it’s nothing experienced before so is amazing. This is not just one of those ‘fluffy', relaxing treatments, rather one that is actually doing something for you and that is the best feeling to have; you know this is working! Next up it’s the detoxifying Fennel and Birch peel-off mask that is applied to the tops of thighs. Cold when applied, this part of the treatment is to draw out impurities from the

smart and offer an expert environment. Sister salon Mane Street Fusion offers the same high quality but with a more urban twist for the movers and shakers of town. If you want to improve your locks and really flaunt glossy, glamorous hair then book into one of the two premier salons. Services include Racoon hair extensions, Wella hair colour, Yuko long lasting hair treatment (loved by the rich and famous) so if you want to stand out and be noticed this 2013 ask this award winning salon that prides itself on creativity to assist you in your look and style this 2013! Mane Street is located at 173 Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1JU or via telephone on 01202 554079 Open Tuesday – Saturday 9am – 6pm, with an extra hour on Thursdays (late night until 7pm), Mane Street has our vote and it should have yours too!

skin, help firm and smooth. What a creation! Fennel is renowned for its diuretic properties and birch to stimulate blood flow. Whilst the mask is left to develop, our therapist gives us an abdominal massage, which works together with our breathing. This part is really interesting as the abdomen is massaged and pressure added to the appropriate points to assist with bowel movements. I felt so much lighter and brighter after this, testament to the miraculous results this unique treatment gives. Each component of this treatment is designed with balancing you inside and out, and you feel lighter, brighter and tighter from just one session! We know how beautiful we felt when we left and during January this is a perfect time to book in and enjoy the benefits post-Christmas.Take it from us, you won’t regret it.

BEST BOOTS IN THE HOUSE The launch of Oliver Proudlock's pop-up shop in Dover Street, Mayfair, showed the world that he isn't just a guy on a reality TV show based in Chelsea but someone dedicated to art and fashion. His brand Serge de Nimes stands out in its own right for intriguing, inspiring, cool designs. Pop-up shop culture seems to be the norm in our society now and Serge de Nimes was the epitome of London cool. Downstairs of Wolf and Badger the space is arty, fashion focused and with that edge of style. The back wall is an illustration of black and white characters (we spotted one as Proudlock) and the opposite end a DJ spins some house in a Serge T-shirt, naturally. Guests are a mix of press, models, Made in Chelsea cast and camera crew. People work the room catching up over the Asahi beer and vodka cranberry on tap. In the collection

itself we saw T-shirt designs we recognised and new ones that boasted more relaxed and fun designs; we spotted Kanye West and Barack Obama in some designs and a lot of symbolism in the latest numbers. The place was full to the seams and it oozed with effortless understated glamour. Proudlock is one of the loveliest guys, so humble and grateful for any feedback on his fashion venture. This is a guy who puts his heart and soul into Serge de Nimes and the energy in the room that night showed it. A superb turn out, the best faces, names and industry people there to show their support, plus Proudlock wore the best boots in the room - zebra print, no more needs to be said. Oliver Proudlock's work is conditioned by his immediate surroundings: the chaotic, culturally diverse and volatile urban atmosphere. Within his work he explores a wide range of media from photography to painting, collage and printing.

must REMEMBER: Hartnett Holder & Co

It's the name of the new restaurant at Lime Wood Hotel and Spa. The restaurant will open in late January 2013 in the hotel’s original dining room, which is undergoing an extensive makeover by interior designer du jour, Martin Brudnizki (Le Caprice, Corrigan’s, Hix, Scotts, J. Sheekey Oyster Bar). This is the first collaboration for Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett MBE since 2001 and it was the prospect of working with Luke Holder, Lime Wood’s Head Chef, that sealed this culinary union. Both chefs are famed for their informal, grounded style of cooking and their respect for provenance. We simply cannot wait to enjoy the new restaurant as we know this is a case of do believe the hype.
