Y

ou must all remember Summer 2010… ‘One’ was the song that reignited the madness for Swedish House Mafia – aka Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell. Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, Erick Morillo were all talking about it and it seems there wasn’t anyone in the electronic scene who wasn’t knocked out by the power of ‘One’. A song that has gone on to sell a million copies worldwide. Signed to Virgin Records and powered by a suitably smooth soul vocal from Pharrell Williams, the roar of approval for ‘One’ was so loud when they played it out at their Masquerade Motel night at Pacha it was as if they’d just stepped out onto the stage at Wembley. What’s more, it was a tune so immense that they had no choice but to play it again at the end of the night. Testament to how iconic this track really is. Yet no more than two years later we’ve had the news that SHM shall be no more. Rumours have spread that the three have fallen out but on speaking with them the contrary is clear. Instead they have revealed that it is a case of wanting to pursue their individual careers instead. Nothing less, nothing more. So what of the track One we have to ask as a first? “We did the track in LA together,” explains Sebastian Ingrosso. “We actually thought we wouldn’t do a track together but after ‘Leave The World Behind’ with Laidback Luke did so well, we decided to make a track and it came out great.” Not bad for a record that Beatport has proclaimed the fastest-selling number one download single of all time. “Two days!” laughs Seb. “We had the

idea and arrangement done and after that we were bouncing it back and forth for one day. The concept was simple: we had an idea of looping a kick-drum into a bassline but I said it needed a crescendo of in your face melodies.” But let’s rewind a little. We all know that ‘One’ is the record that’s flipped the script but there are so many other questions we need to be answered. For example, how did these Swedes meet? Who gave them their name? And are they really direct descendants of the mafia? “Me and Seb met when we were six or seven: we got into all kinds of trouble together!” laughs Steve. “Seb’s Dad had a label called Plumphouse and we got into music and did all kinds of weird things including lounge compilations and made music for shows. I even did music for a Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. Then we bumped into Axwell ten years ago now, when he was doing stuff on the house label Sulphuric,” Steve continues. “We got in touch – we were younger than him – and we just clicked. We all learned from each other because we were young kids. Also, when it came to the music, me and Seb were more rough. I don’t tweak a hi-hat for six hours!” laughs Steve. And then there was fellow Swede Eric Prydz, who together with Steve created the CR2 smash ‘Woz Not Woz in 2004; “We all hung out like friends and started building a relationship. But no-one would give us shows – we had to beg nightclubs to put us on! We begged them to let us play for one hour. That’s why we worked so hard at the start. We never got the support – until now.”

The dynamic of the three and their collective history is the key to the Mafia’s continued success, as Steve explains to us; “It’s been one hell of a ride. When the name ‘Swedish House Mafia’ first popped up it wasn’t something we focused on straight away. People called us that on forums back in the day. We’ve been through everything together. I can always lean on one of their shoulders and they can lean on mine. I can always trust their opinions. When I have a track, they tell me straight away what they think. With Swedish House Mafia, you’re with friends.” However everybody who knows the music world know that Axwell, Steve and Sebastian are separate entities too. They all have their own record labels (Axtone, SIZE and Refune respectively) and they all have separate lives and individual concerns. Axwell has already been giving this subject some though; “Swedish House Mafia is a monster of its own. We’ve tried to control it and seen it as a bonus but the truth is, it just won’t go away. I call it ‘IT’! When we work together, shit happens. It’s a machine that has a certain electricity that’s much stronger than anyone else. Let’s see where it takes us now,” says Axwell.

“No one would touch us, that’s why we worked so hard at the start. We never got the support – until now.”

Then there’s the monster of Masquerade Motel conceived in Ibiza; a club concept that’s picked up plaudits from day one. The second time the Motel returned to Ibiza Axwell described it as “faster and more polished and we’re drinking more gasoline.” (only a DJ could say this) “I guess the difference with Ibiza is it’s an intimate party vibe – we want you to feel like you’re a part of a private after-party,” continues Axwell. In fact the Masquerade Motel has been so successful that Las Vegas and Miami welcomed the Motel in early 2011 and the likes of Pete Tong and Pharrell Williams took part. Back at Pacha last Summer the trio welcomed incredible guests such Alex Metric, Tinie Tempah, Example, Benny Benassi, the rising star Alesso, Calvin Harris too… the list goes on. >>>>>

“I can always trust their opinions. When I have a track, they tell me straight away what they think. With Swedish House Mafia, you’re with friends….”

The great thing about Swedish House Mafia is that they like to do things their way. Did you hear about when they shocked the industry when they decided to do things a bit different and built a custom venue, dubbed Masquerade Motel Miami, on South Beach for the annual Winter Music Conference. What did the fans do? They answered the call and sold out all early bird tickets in a mere 22 minutes. What took place was the stuff of legends as Swedish House Mafia and all-star support from Dirty South, Pete Tong, Calvin Harris, Armand van Helden and AN21 and Max Vangeli redefined what live dance music is all about that year. Things have moved quickly for the Mafia that is for sure. Following a rocket year with tracks constantly played across the globe they followed up with top 10 UK single ‘Save The World’. It almost feels like they have saved us with their music, even playing to 20,000 people at their landmark ‘One Night Stand’ show at New York’s Madison Square Garden which sold out in a staggering 10 minutes. We feel this says it all. And so why have they decided to break up is the real question on everyone’s lips? “We want to thank every single one of you that came with us on this journey,” is all they will say to us and they deny any disagreements time and time again. In fact Ingrosso waxed poetic on Twitter recently: “It’s better to burn out, than fade away,” yet we can’t help being a little disappointed that the musical geniuses will be now more as an item. It was this very year, 2012, that saw the release of their highest charting single to date – ‘Antidote’ - a collaboration with Pendulum’s Knife Party - which reached number 4 in the UK. March then saw the boys complete Masquerade Motel Miami for the second year running, doing two nights which were bigger and better, with double the capacity of the previous year, and two stages. They followed this with the release of ‘Greyhound’ - an allSwedish collaboration with Absolut Vodka, a bespoke track written by the boys for Absolut’s US advertising campaign

12 | Issue 1

and they recently played at Milton Keynes National Bowl to a crowd of 60, 000 - the largest DJ headline show in the world. This saw them make history as they became the first dance act to have headlined both Madison Square Garden and Milton Keynes Bowl. Life doesn’t get much better. Perhaps it’s about leaving on a high for them, as Ingrosso earlier stated. Now with over three million single sales worldwide, life has been good for the Mafia there’s no denying and they describe why they give so much at their live sets;“What we do: it’s a show,” reasons Seb. “People want confetti and they want to get something out of it. You can’t just DJ and look at your shoes! Now dance music is really big and we have an opportunity to take this further.” Swedish House Mafia are three people, three producers and three pairs of eyes and ears perfectly aligned together. The deal with Virgin was a huge step forward for dance music and DJ culture, suggesting that major labels are showing faith in electronic music again. The Mafia have cemented DJs on the mainstream map and made each and every one of us feel part of them and journey through their music.

If you’ve been lucky enough to experience Swedish House Mafia like us you will know exactly how much attitude, energy and passion the three give from behind the decks. They make you all feel at one and like you made the night together with them. Time with Swedish House Mafia is something extra ordinary, extra special and we know fans around the world are mourning their break up. We leave it to Axwell to have the final word as their final days draw closer; “I think that it’s an amazing job to DJ and produce and share the passion for music that we have. It’s pretty simple and very natural. We’re not a manufactured thing – we’re musical brothers.” There are currently SHM gigs taking place in Ibiza and Stockholm, with one last series of concerts to be unveiled soon. As we go to press we hear from contacts on the inside this will certainly not be the last of the Mafia... They came, they saw, they raved. We salute you Swedish House Mafia for giving us so much. www.swedishhousemafia.com

GENTLEMEN'S CLUB There’s no denying it’s been a very British year so we put the subject of ‘gin’ to Andy Coleman, Managing Director of U-Mix here in Dorset. He educates us about the quintessentially British spirit; The history of gin is a long and varied one; from its somewhat unknown Dutch origin, its depiction by cartoonist Hogarth’s (nicknamed “Mothers ruin”) to the so-thought malaria preventing tonic, gin has become a recognisable symbol for something quintessentially British! Other than the bartender in our local “Gin Joint” giving us the option of lemon or lime, what do we really know about the gins on offer and which one is right for us. The first point to start in understanding gin, is that they don’t all taste the same and they don’t all have the same ingredients. I like to think of gins as I think of wines, many different flavours and characteristics; a merlot tastes very different to a chianti. The market of gins is vast and varying – yes they all have one common ingredient, they are all flavoured by juniper, but really that’s where the similarities end. So here’s my guide to some of the gins you may encounter on your travels down your local “gin lane.”

PROJECT C 9: THE NEW ZONDA?

"The finest design, the finest ingredients, the highest quality of work. The result: cars of unmitigating beauty and high performance."

We speak with Paul Woodman, the Founder of the world’s first social network for car lovers, LOVECARS.COM. You're in for a treat as we discuss the all new Pagani Huayra creation

16 | Issue 1

For those that don’t know who is Pagani and how would you sum up the world-famous Pagani cars? Pagnai Automobili SpA was born in the 1990’s by the genius, vision and drive of one man; Horacio Pagani. Horacio is an artist, albeit one who finds expression in producing magnificent automobiles characterised by the ‘supercar’, or ‘hypercar’ genre. In real life he is a charming family man and an obsessive auto-engineer, demanding as close to perfection as can be acheived. The finest design, the finest ingredients, the highest quality of work. The result: cars of unmitigating beauty and high performance. Originally from Argentina and mentored by five times World Champion racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio, Horacio settled in Modena, Italy and here was introduced to some powerful allies. Mercedes Benz, Lamborghini, Pirelli and many others witnessed his early work develop into cars of the highest distinction. His trademark speciality is working with carbon fibre; a difficult and completely man-made ‘advanced designer’ material. It is modern-day light, strong and tough. He augements this with specialist use of metals and leather so his cars becomes an artistic combination of individual hand craft work. In summary, I would say he makes some of the world’s most beautiful, handbuilt, super-high performance, works of modern art. What makes the Zonda in particular so special? The Zonda was Horacio’s opening shot based mostly on carbon fibre work, which was ground breaking at the time. It was motivated by the pure beauty of high performance that could be achieved. Gordon Murray’s F1 McLaren was the result of Grand Prix car obsession with weight. Horacio’s work could never be so crude; his automotive interpretation is fine art and the Zonda his first free expression of love and passion for fast, beautiful cars. Supercars need exquisite engines, not just powerful ones, and Mercedes Benz AMG provided Horacio with 7.3 litre V12s of the highest pedigree. Now of course, they are being valued as such. I’m lucky enough to have driven more than 25,000 klms in various Zonda’s. Yet still, every time I’m lucky enough to sit behind the wheel of one, it still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

17

Do you have a favourite Zonda model? If so, which one and why? There are so many choices, including the latest and last, the stunning Zonda 760. However, it’s such an easy choice for me regarding my favourite Zonda, and indeed my favourite car of all time: The Zonda Cinque Roadster. To me it’s the most perfect idea of what a supercar should be; very fussy, very demanding and extraordinarily exclusive, along with ultra-high performance and exquisite beauty. Oh and the noise; it’s just how every supercar should look, perform and sound. It’s all about the finest tactility and extraordinary response. You have the privilege of road-testing supercars - Describe an average day to us?

How did LOVECARS.COM first get into driving and testing such magnificent cars? Being the world’s first, global, dedicated social network for car lovers, we have the enviable task of being invited to drive various cars to provide our thoughts and opinions to our users, and ultimately to share our experiences on our new site. Our team has a mixture of experience, enthusiasm and a fair share of ability. Most of us have worked with cars for a long time, including an ex-racing driver and lifelong member of the BRDC within our team – so we’re quite well qualified. The difficult thing is when an opportunity to drive a very special car comes along, who gets the keys! What’s been a highlight for you?

Well, you’ll not be surprised to learn that getting out of bed in the early morning is always less of a chore when you have the opportunity to work with pieces like these. We always set an agenda so there’ll be a number of tasks to work through accurately and as part of a team. To achieve objectives we aim to get the most out of the time we have with the car. Driving fast cars gets to be a sideline when there are deadlines, paperwork and results to meet. Mistakes need to be at a minimum and planning is key. Driving Pagani’s is a wonder though; and if we’re completely truthful, it’s actually extremely easy to get the information and shots we need really from nowhere!

I’ve worked with some people who are the best in the business, so it’s hard to spot individual highlights. Where I am at and with LOVECARS.COM is fairly exceptional. In hindsight, I would have loved to have been a World Champion at something, but using my head, integrity and ambition, we’ve made a stunning new website and with the support and dedication from some wonderful people so that’s a highlight. Any hairy moments you can share with us? There must be times when you’re pushing a new car to its limits and you felt a little on-edge? Yes, and that’s the whole point really,

"I've driven more than 25,000 klms in various Zonda’s. Yet still, every time I’m lucky enough to sit behind the wheel of one, it still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up."

18 | Issue 1

and is pretty exhausting. You’re not learning anything in performance terms unless you are on the limit so the adrenaline some days is quite high. Other than a scary highspeed moment on a German Autobahn (in a Zonda C12S) where somebody pulled out on me, I’ve been okay. Considering my mileage over the years I’m pleased with this record and hope to think it hasn’t had anything to do with luck! Can you tell us how the brand-new Pagani Huayra differs from the Zonda? Was the idea to create something totally different in form? Driven creative’s like Horacio never seem completely happy or content. So once the Zonda was on its way, he started to think about the next step. And world regulations move on too. The Huayra (pronounced Wire-Ra) is a remarkable

developme mature ma homologate perspective from Horac like an airpl good analo the driving but strengt encapsulate performanc no less th for the mo a few more pace. It’s fi is quite ex developme

nt; it’s a more sophisticated, asterpiece and is a worlded car. To put his vision into e I received a letter recently cio who said "The Huayra is lane to run on road". That’s a ogy from the creator. It’s still g tool aficionados crave for ths of the Zonda have been ed to progress all-round ce. It’s a more rounded car, hrilling, maybe less raucous dern world, which will allow e to access proper supercar ierce speed and accessibility xtraordinary, but more of a nt than totally new Pagani.

19

There is huge buzz around the Huayra. Could you tell us about the spec and how many are being put into production? The chassis behaviour comes directly from the Zonda R and a world record 6:47 Nurburgring lap time, so that pretty much hits the spot. Personally I love the added power dimension from the turbo-charging and its adjustability for the driver to exploit. The new gearbox from Xtrac is another fabulous development. The Huayra changes direction without the tiniest stray movement or hint of ‘ertia’. The aerodynamics are a whole decade more advanced. Pure genius, the constantly adjusting ‘ailerons’ combined with constant ride height and attitude adjustment to give you something from nothing, just working the air as you pass through it. Pagani has splashed out on much bigger production facilities near Modena but it still will never mean more than 40 or so Huayras being produced annually. Let’s talk about the style and design of the new car; the Zonda is renowned for its distinctive look - is the new Huayra on par with this. Some might say it would be hard to top the Zonda! For a start, I think the Huayra has such an utterly modern-art beauty rather than classical supercar look of the Zonda. The sweep of the rear deck is absolutely breathtaking. The interior too comes across magnificently as Horacio worked to create a complete work of art inside, combining technology and sensuous operation. Each and every time you look at the Huayra, either standing still or driving by, you notice new things about the car.

"Horacio simply does not have it in him to produce just a machine car"

It becomes mesmoric. Horacio simply does not have it in him to produce just a ‘machine car’. Even his circuit-only Zonda R and most recent R Evo have a style and finesse of design which it would be much simpler to do without. I think actually moves people emotionally. However everything moves on and the final gift that Horacio has, is that in designing the various pieces, he has the whole design concept clear in his mind. Altogether remarkable and something that makes Paganis standout compared to cars designed as machines by committees. This clarity and purpose from one man, and the result and exclusivity is what you are buying into; quite unique in this modern age. As there will never be another Zonda made, will you be sad to see it go? In a word yes, though I don’t think Zonda will ever die; I would be very sad if it happened. As we speak there are just a couple of the 15 Zonda R’s to be completed and lack of homologated parts may well draw that to a finish. Can you give us any insights into famous people who have ordered the Huayra or shown an interest? Well, that is particularly sensitive stuff as you can imagine, but a number of celebrities and collectors have Horacio’s work in their sights. They are pretty special purchases and it’s noticeable that patience and diligence to work with Horacio on your own Pagani is highly rewarding, and exclusive of course. Allegedly, and of course we cannot comment, there is a very famous F1 driver who has recently taken delivery of a purple Zonda 760. Lucky chap! What makes your ideal super car? I truly am turned on by absolute performance but I don’t like being hurt in the process by super-hard suspension where the fillings in your teeth fall out,

20 | Issue 1

or kicking steering wheels that make you a nervous wreck. But I want to be as close to the action as possible; ‘in touch’ with the grip available. Given the technology available, I think I would like it road legal, carry a few conveniences and exude bags of character. One of Horacio’s finest would be just fine with me. What is the focus of the company now in terms of production and super cars moving forwards? Step by step all that is required is to provide the fellow enthusiast owners with a commodity and service which blows away their expectations. So far, Horacio has managed that perfectly. The Huayra gives Pagani a chance to just grow organically and spread that bit further. If the world community moves in any particular direction away from existing power units and transmissions that we enjoy today, within the life of the next generation, I would be surprised, so for the foreseeable future I think the Pagani recipe is perfectly fine where it is.

THE PAGANI HUAYRA IS AN EXCITING DEVELOPMENT TO THE SUPERCAR GENERATION. WITH A TRULY UNIQUE DESIGN, IMPRESSIVE ENGINE AND ENDLESS LIST OF ACCOLADES THE NEW PAGANI BRINGS SOMETHING MONUMENTAL TO THE CAR WORLD.

BEST OF BRITISH W

hat a weekend. My how did it rain but in true British style we did not let that dampen our spirits. Building on the success of the last four years the British Beach Polo Championships 2012 promised and delivered. We were treated to teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales competing for the Championship title, and the Oakley Professional Beach Volleyball team, the Sunseeker Lounge, the Cocoloco Lounge and renowned Amika Beach Parties across the weekend

The July 2012 event had a certain buzz about it. Three weeks prior nearly all tickets had been sold, including all hospitality and VIP tickets. The site itself was built in five days and as the grandstand grew out of the sand so did the retail village and Polo arena ready for two-days of action. Sandbanks beach was converted into a mini festival and even though the rain poured the fashion show started proceedings each day with clothes, hair and make-up from MWAH of Westbourne andJulian of Adonis Crystals helped host. A mix of young and old adorned the catwalk showcasing everything from glamorous dresses to bikinis. The fashion show also carried an important message; love who you are. As some of the models came from difficult backgrounds so it was incredibly humbling seeing them walk the runway and be proud of who they are today. The Polo itself kept guests entertained as the high-speed, high-impact games made for exciting watching. On both days Ireland won on the Polo pitch and reigned victorious overall. As the day progressed the evening parties hosted by Amika London crept in, turning the Sandpolo from a days’ sporting event to a party like never before. Amika had pulled out all the stops providing a huge

marquee for the glamorous to bring their party heels and dance until the early hours. The fine, fabulous fashionistas were out in force and it was one of those nights where you just could not sit down for the music was too good and the atmosphere too addictive. Amika London sure know how to put on a party and after the event we caught up with Amika Managing Director Richard Austin-Rees to ask him about how he felt the Sandpolo went for them; “Polo is without doubt a social sport and is frequented by the best dressed and most beautiful socialites in the most beautiful locations our world has to offer, and The Sandbanks British Beach Polo Championships are no exception. This year we didn’t have the sun as we have done on previous occasions, however that didn’t dampen spirits. In fact it just meant the party atmosphere started early in the marquees and Amika London were able to produce and create a beach party vibe with a festival atmosphere - eventually leading to that West End nightclub feel. Best of all, the marquee was full by 8pm and everyone was dancing. Naturally we look forward to sponsoring the England Team and hosting the event for a third consecutive year in 2013. We will look at raising the game, even if that means making a deal with British Summertime weather!” Being a Dorset based magazine we are so proud to have seen Sandpolo grow so significantly over the last five years, achieving national status in the Polo world, international press attention and a growing fan base of those from not only where we live but far and wide. Long may the British Beach Polo Championships continue with its widespread sporting, business and social acclaim. See you on 12th & 13th July 2013. www.sandpolo.com

“Thank you to all those who made our 5th anniversary such a huge success. We are already looking forward to next year. England, Scotland and Wales are determined to seek revenge on Ireland on the polo pitch and we are lining up some great evening entertainment. A big thank you to everyone involved” Johnny Wheeler, Director

AUTOBOX Well it looks the same, but there again that’s no surprise. Recently we found out what the new Porsche Boxster had to offer. The Boxster has had to put up with its fair share of mockery over its 15 years in production, from being labelled the ‘poor mans 911’ to the ‘hairdressers car of choice’ the Boxster has had it all. But that ends here and now; we’re here to tell the world they’re WRONG. The new Boxster S is fantastic. It was 15 years ago and now it’s even better! Ok, by now you can probably tell we’re a fan and you’d be right but with the new 2012 models 315bhp flat six midengine layout with rear wheel drive you feel like you’re behind the wheel of something special. And you are. It looks superb, it’s wider and longer than the previous model and is far more aggressive in its stance, but our favourite new addition is the noise. The model we tested had the chrono sports package and

produced a tone any petrol head would never get tired of. There are new headlights, front end, side intakes and Carrera GT-ish ridgeline running through the rear lamps and around the bodywork, neatly hiding a pop-up rear spoiler. It’s longer in the wheelbase but with a shaved front overhang that stops it looking bigger, and there’s a tautness to the design - especially in darker colours. Wheels are big: standard Boxster comes with 18s, the S has 19s and there are even optional 20s which are huge. As two seater roadsters go the new Boxster still holds the crown but this one is by far the best of the bunch. The main differences in the new and old models are noticeable, firstly its lighter between 25-30kg depending on whether you go for the manual of the automatic PDK system. The body itself is made from a fairly conservative mix of steel and alloy, but the doors, bonnet and rear luggage compartment lid are all wrought from unalloyed aluminum. It’s also faster with a 0-60mph of under five seconds and

a top speed of 167mph, that’s 987 911 performance! They only new attribute to the Boxster which takes some getting used to is the new electronic steering, which in our opinion is far more obvious in the new 911 and doesn’t take anything from the drive of a new Porsche Boxster. Getting to the point it costs £45K and that can easily be bumped up with extras such as the sports chrono package so it’s not cheap but bang for your buck you can’t beat it; this is a proper sports car, with a proper engine and proper styling. The best Boxster yet. Hairdressers need not apply. www.porsche.com/uk

Q&A

Dorset Cereals Sum up Dorset Cereals in five words. Honest, tasty and real breakfast pleasure. What is it like as a place to work? Is your office as cool and quirky as your marketing? It’s a great place to work, friendly, collaborative and fun. The office is open plan and on top of the factory, so everyone is in it together. It also has the feel of being a ground-breaking, forward thinking business, which is great to be a part of. What is your personal favourite Dorset Cereal and why? It changes regularly, but it has to be our latest granola, which is going to come out soon (so I can’t tell you the name yet!), which is just incredible. I eat it any time of the day, it’s a dangerous thing to have near my desk! Can you tell us a bit about the new breakfast pots we’ve seen? What is the idea behind them? The idea behind them is that we don’t see why anyone should miss out on the simple pleasure of a delicious breakfast just because life’s a bit hectic. So, we’ve taken three of our favourite cereals and popped a single serving into a little pot – leaving room for the milk – so all you need to do is grab a spoon and dig in. Perfect for on the go, in the office or to take to festivals.

28 | Issue 1

Dorset Cereals make everything from porridge, bars and muesli, what was the very first product and flavour? One of our first muesli’s was called ‘Deluxe Muesli’ which is actually essentially our Simply Delicious muesli now. It’s still one of the most popular recipes, one of our top sellers and basically just a really great muesli. We knew it was good when everything started to spread by word of mouth – there’s no better recommendation than from someone you know. Why do you think Dorset Cereals has done so well? Especially against big producers like Kellogs? What’s its USP? The step change really came when we reinvented the muesli world with our boxes. Going from plastic bags to beautiful boxes really brought us to the attention of cereal lovers. The key to our success has always been taste, just using top quality ingredients and great recipes to create cereals that everyone loves. However, because we are tiny compared to some of the cereal giants out there, we’ve had to stay ahead of the game with inventive marketing that makes us stand out from the rest. So we have to ask, why Dorset? What is the original link? Because we all have a bit of Dorset running through our veins here! How do Dorset Cereals like to give back? We know you work closely with the Woodland Trust for one? We’ve worked with many charities over the last few years, including the fantastic Race for Life this year. The charity we’ve worked closest with though, is definitely the lovely people at the Woodland Trust. We’re very

proud to support them and we’ve committed to helping local people plant 16,000 trees across the UK. During December 2011, we even planted our own little woodland of 500 trees just down the road from us in Poundbury. More recently, we’ve become a silver partner in the Woodland Trust’s prestigious Jubilee Woods project, ensuring the Queen’s Jubilee has a lasting legacy in all the lovely trees planted in her honour. When you recruit people, what do you look for in an individual? Any interview tips you can share as we know times are hard and a lot of young people would love to know how they might be able to gain an interview with a great company like Dorset Cereals. I would say the most important thing is always the person themselves, not what they’ve achieved. If they show they are driven, excited by opportunities and willing to work hard, they will stand out. We look for self-starters that we would be happy to give responsibility to, because as such a small company everyone needs to take responsibility for their role. Of course, they also have to have a sense of humour so we can enjoy working with them. Finally, what can we expect from Dorset Cereals over the next 6-12 months? Do tell! There are a lot of exciting recipes coming up, a few potentially great and very different ideas, but we don’t want to spoil any surprises! One thing to definitely look out for is our breakfast book that we’re furiously writing, which will celebrate all things breakfast, including some mouth-wateringly amazing recipes created by our wonderful recipe chef Cheryl.

rey of London is a powerful, luxe rock inspired brand conceived in an innovative and highlydirectional way. Obsessive about shape, style and silhouette Prey’s clothes are sensual, provocative and explorative in design and finish.

The first collection from Prey also showcases lightweight cotton tees featuring oversized owl prints and rolled sleeves, alongside studded 90’s style, mohair jumpers which add a playful sophistication to other items such as hot-pink leopard print leggings with zip detailing.

The debut collection is about to drop and get ready for some serious attention. The line pays homage to the flamboyant late night London girl whose cult appeal flirts with a vintage rock attitude. Cue dark make up, messy hair, super-skinny trousers, over sized knitted tops, flashes of leather garb, black chiffon and an unruly attitude.

Prey of London is about connecting with your own raw energy and making a statement like no other if you hadn't realised.

The brand is all about owning your power and prowess by being beautifully brave. Twisted asymmetric dresses look spot-on with Prey’s distinctive print designs. You can expect from autumn 2012 beautifully printed X-ray black birds on sheer fronted Tee’s that give a sexy yet whimsical feel. THIS MONTH

We take a look at this season's must-haves. Get ready to take on the colour grey...

W

e know it’s a little bit controversial, but we have to admit we’re quite looking forward to the nights drawing in... if only to celebrate the return of the trusty black opaque - oh how we adore you! Along with cinched in winter trenches; spiky black shoe boots; chunky knit jumpers; skinny pencil trousers and super soft cashmere separates, winter fashion returns in all its glory, with a few cheeky surprises up its sleeve to keep all you fashionistas on your toes... so what will you be wearing this season? CHUNKY KNITS Comfortable, cozy and forgiving clothes on the rails? Yes! This season’s warm-and-fuzzy knits come in a dizzying array of colours and patterns and a wide variety of silhouettes - from traditional, fitted Fair Isle to graphic and oversize there’s something to suit every taste - and when paired with some super skinnies and shoe boots you’ve got instant style in one fell swoop. 50’S STYLING We adore 50s style fashion - in fact if we could have been born in the Mad Men era of full skirts, cinched in waists, exaggerated sashes and true ladylike glamour, we’d click our ruby Louboutins three times in a flash. Luckily, fashion houses across the country have indulged our passion for this moment in fashion history, with prom dresses, bows and cutesy kitten heels galore, with Oasis leading the way by a mile. COLOUR The only colour to be seen in this season is colbalt blue, as seen in all its vibrancy at Stella McCartney; along with red berry tones - particularly noted in Victoria by Victoria Beckham. One gorgeously rich, the other strikingly pretty, both tones luckily suit most skin tones.

COLLARS Grab a dickey and make like Peter Pan - collars are having a moment this year! The high street stores are jam packed-full of dresses and tops embellished with cute little contrasting collars. Choose a shape that flatters your face: rounded edges for angular faces, and pointy tips for softer features. PSYCHEDELICIOUS One trend we’re not so sure about is the print revolution - rather too psychedelic for our liking! However, used subtly, the 60s inspired patterns from floral to paisley to graphic, can spruce up and stylise an otherwise plain and simple outfit. For the brave fashionistas out there, go loud and proud and clash away to your hearts content - a look which will certainly get you noticed! FIFTY SHADES OF... Fifty Shades of Grey may have been onto something - and it’s not the obvious! Grey has become a staple in our winter wardrobes over the past few year’s this year more than ever. The AW12 Catwalks were full of the trendiest shade of grey - pale slate. The cool neutral tone of this shade is perfectly offset when used in fluid, soft, figure-flattering jersey fabrics.

SO IT’S TIME TO EMBRACE THE SHORTER DAYS AND LONGER EVENINGS - AND RAINY DAYS WHICH OFFER THE BEST EXCUSES TO GO SHOPPING! AS BEFORE YOU KNOW, OUR SS13 WARDROBES WILL BE SASHAYING DOWN THE CATWALKS... HAPPY SHOPPING.

the overcoat Male style guru Arwel Richards explores the importance of 'The Overcoat'. Each month Arwel will explore a different topic, muse over fashion, faux-pas and life itself.

L

et’s get the mourning of the sunshine out of the way first and then consign the flip flops to the suitcase,. It’s time to get serious about keeping warm, it’s going to snow in two months. Well the Met Office is hedging its bets - they predicted a mild winter last year. Which was a bit infuriating, if like me, you were going arse backwards through a hedge in a flurry of snow and choice swear words partly aimed at the ‘mild’ Met Office and partly aimed at the handling skills of a twenty year old Jaguar. So don’t let the weather force you into a bright red waterproof survival jacket with GPS and whistle, opt for something with a little bit of style.

I have a fetish for overcoats. Every baddy wears a dark overcoat with the collars turned up to order a hit, it’s a rule of film making. Baddies are always stylish. Our weather is so changeable in Britain you’ll find that you may be wearing your overcoat from October to March. I even wore mine to a rainy funeral in July. Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani dictated the overcoat style through the Eighties and Nineties. Each example were indicative of the time, soft shoulders, ankle skimming examples in wool and cashmere. Gieves and Hawkes of Saville Row, on the other hand, consistently produced military cut double and single breasted examples in a tailored silhouette for decades. Messrs. Lauren and Armani began to copy this slimmer fit and throughout the Naughties produced exquisite examples in luxury fabrics. This year’s shows

were full of tailored overcoats, proving that once again, we know what we’re talking about when it comes to overcoats. Well we have to, our weather dictates it. THE CUT & FABRIC The two rules for buying the right one is cut and fabric. Cashmere is less scratchy than a wool number and navy or dark grey always works, black makes you look like an undertaker. Mohair looks good but isn’t as hard wearing. When it comes to cut, the shoulders are vital, the entire coat hangs from there. A camel hair coat is a favourite of mine but it can be a bit Arthur Daley, and if you’re only buying one this year the light colour of the camel hair can be a bit restrictive on where you can wear it. A good square cut to the shoulders gives plenty of room for your suit jacket to fit snugly underneath and makes you look broader where it counts. When the middle button is done up the coat should mould your body and be nipped in at the waist. Don’t worry if it feels a bit restricting, remember it’s only to keep you warm as you’re walking, you won’t be driving a long distance in it. If it’s been well made with good tailoring in mind, the coat can also be worn casually. Jeans, brown boots and a plain wool roll-neck in grey looks awesome, and if it’s one of those bright winter days, don a pair of Raybans in black. The opposite sex will like it, trust me. Lastly length, having a coat flapping about your shins is a bit of a pain, but go with what best suits your body.

THE STYLE There are two main options for style; double breasted and three button. Avoid a donkey jacket or pea coat, it’s too informal and whiffs of Left leaning politics. Instead go for a three button with longish single breasted lapels or double breasted with peaks. I’m wearing a Paul Costelloe covert coat in grey with a dark brown moleskin back collar. The lapels can be turned up at the back and what you’re wearing underneath gets more chance to be on display. Nothing looks smarter than a tie disappearing into a waistcoat under the V shape of a jacket’s lapel. Slanting pockets offer good protection when you forget your gloves and need access to your phone. They last longer compared to straight pockets as the seams have less pressure applied to them. The good news is that virtually all of the high street has good examples of overcoat. THE ACCESSORIES When the weather is mild a silk scarf offers the twin benefits of colour and breaking up the block of colour. When the brass monkeys are crying, opting for a cashmere scarf giving you a whiff of decadent luxury at under £20. Leather gloves in an unusual shade brings out the colour of your tie and makes a nice change from hitman black. The Italian male tucks his pair into his top pocket, as I have done here. MAINTENANCE Try to avoid walking in the rain, use an umbrella. A damp coat needs to be hung on a hanger and allowed to air dry naturally. Whist damp, give it a few sprays with aftershave, you’ll avoid the wet carpet smell. If it gets dirty, let it dry then brush it off. Try a damp sponge, or if really dirty take it to the dry cleaners. Give it a spray with Scotchguard once a month for a bit of stain and rain repellence. Oh and one final thing, if you smoke, then the chances are this winter you’ll be outside a bar having a fag. Don’t let your hand drop below your waist when holding your cigarette as the bottom of the coat will fly up in the wind.

THE INTERVIEW FOOTBALLING LEGEND MATT LE TISSIER ON THE BEAUTIFUL GAME AND SOUTHAMPTON BEING BACK IN THE PREMIERSHIP

I’m thrilled that Southampton is back in the Premiership They are a brilliant team with some great players. I think it means the world to the club and supporters. They’ve been there through the hard times and so it’s great that they now get to enjoy this moment. The city truly deserves a premier league football club. My predictions for the season are The first game showed a lot of promise against Manchester City. I thought Southampton played pretty well. However the game against Wigan was disappointing which has probably knocked people’s confidence but it is early days and I’m pretty confident they can stay up. My player to watch at the moment is Adam Lallana I really like watching Adam play. He seemed to be playing out of position a little for his first couple of games so I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet. I hope he does well in the Premiership. The highlight of my career is difficult to say Playing for England and making my debut for the country was a very special time, but also scoring the last goal in the last league game at The Dell and winning holds truly fond memories for me. (Even though he laughs off most praise, Matt Le Tissier provided a fairytale finish in this game with an 89th minute goal that has gone down in the history books) When people say I’m one of the greatest players of my generation I laugh I find it a bit strange actually as there are far better players than me. I’ve only got eight England caps but it is an honour to hear that. It’s nice that people remember some of my glory moments.

38 | Issue 1

Matt Le Tissier today I’m working hard on my Natural Coaching School. We’ve had the first trials and the second round is coming up. We aim to pick between 12 and 16 up and coming coaches to coach the under 7s and 12’s. We’re teaching them in a similar way that I joined and experienced and got involved; to really get players to express themselves and to play without any fear. Our main aim is to find natural talent in the boys and it’s nice to put something back into football. Soccer Saturday is a great laugh and this is my day job nowadays, assisting with it every weekend Then there’s the new coaching school in Southampton keeping me busy and I also get invited to host after-dinner talks which I enjoy. I try and play golf two to three times a week As a passion of mine I try to play as much as I can, both at a club in Southampton where I’m a member and also at the renowned Remedy Oak. It’s a beautiful course. Do you have the whole kit? Can we expect you in the shoes, jumpers and gloves next time? Yes! I have got all the gear - absolutely. A remote control trolley and all sorts! My spare time overall is divided between family, golf and football. In that order! I have two ‘grown-up ‘kids living in Guernsey and a three year old here which keeps me busy. We hear you’re a bad saver Matt... It’s true, there’s no denying I am a bad saver. I love to spend money! (He laughs) I don’t have one particular lavish spend or one item I have spent a lot on but a considerable amount goes on my golf, our house, always adding

something or buying new things, and then the family. There is no denying I’m a bad saver – if I see something I have to have it. My thoughts on Team GB and the Olympics What a great year for our country and for sport. I very much got behind Team GB and the Olympics as a whole. Whenever I was in I watched everything I could; there was always one sport or another on the television in my house. By the end I was actually a bit gutted that back when the tickets had gone on sale I didn’t organise getting any. I kicked myself for not getting tickets to be there and experience all the live action. I kept thinking how nice it would have been to go up there. It was all really wonderful. I felt very patriotic during those two weeks. A great advert for the country I think. I hope the Olympics has helped develop sport I certainly hope the Olympics have made people want to get into sport. I have read that they have found in a lot of sports already that participation has gone up quite considerably since the event, which can only be a positive thing. If I wasn’t a footballer... I would have been a cricketer. I loved my cricket, I was good at it too, so if I hadn’t of made it in football this would have been my next try. Clearly, it was always going to be sport. You can catch Matt Le Tissier live on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News each week and follow him on Twitter @mattletiss7

the city Of angels The insider's guide to LA. Here are our top five tips for when visiting the city of lights

#Get Lost in Catalina

It’s in Los Angeles County but it looks like it should be on the Mediterranean. The pace of life is different on Catalina. Colourful fish jump out of the sea, people drive golf carts instead of cars, but that’s only the amuse bouche. The real charm of the island is in its unpretentious, laid-back ambiance, enough to get you chilled out and sipping on a beer in no time. For some, it may be too laid back but if you wish to escape the rock and roll of the city of lights for one day it couldn’t be more perfect.

#Raise the Bar

Los Angeles has lots of great nightclubs but this is a city about timing as much as the venue. It is the timing that determines the hot spot of the moment. Every night you’ll see a different promoter, different music, different crowd, and a completely different experience. Many of the best known club nights are private parties so if you’re not on the list, you’re not getting in. And if you’re eligible to be on the list you already know where the party is. One A-list club impressing natives and tourists alike is Skybar, boasting some of the finest views of Los Angeles.

42 | Issue 1

It’s open-air, has a pavilion style bar perched above the pool and ‘outdoor living room’; very much an LA nightlife institution. Expect luxurious lounge seating, accents of gold and glitter and to feel like you’re almost floating in the clouds.

#Walk to the Hollywood Sign

What could be more ‘LA’ than visiting the famous sign? Once saying ‘Hollywoodland’ this is an icon of film magic and Hollywood glamour the world over. Originally built as a huge, illuminated property development advertisement, each letter stands 45ft high and is recognised on all quarters of the globe. It’s recommended to hire a car and drive the Hollywood Hills rather than do the tour-guide bus rides. This way you can get up close and personal with the incredible houses and views. You can even park road-side towards the top and walk the rest in attempt to get even nearer to the letters. In fact this is the only way you will get any closer to them and if you’re lucky you’ll stumble across a film set as these barren hills are used for many TV shows that are filmed in LA. Don’t be alarmed if you hear ‘cut’ coming from the trees.

#The Grove

Once a bustling Farmers Market, this place has come a long way since 1934 where farmers bought and sold produce. Today, if you pop down to The Grove you’ll discover a lively, atmospheric place to eat and drink all in the open-air. There’s a surprising number of food stands and boutiques selling chic clothes that harbour top marks for their cuisine, local delicacies and overall vibe. The Grove also boasts its own shopping area, adding more places to shop, go to the movies, eat in a sit-down restaurant or watch the dancing fountains. The Farmers Market is best experienced in the evening when the tourists go home and the locals come out. There’s also a rumour that Britain’s own Gordon Ramsey is opening a quintessentially British pub here.

#Sushi and Beyond

Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi and design impresario Philippe Starck, created ‘Katsuya by Starck’ on Hollywood Boulevard, and brace yourself, it’s truly a feast for the senses. Known for their unique rolls, specialty cocktails and spectacular sushi and sashimi platters, Katsuya restaurant translates Japanese flavours to the American palate. Signature dishes include Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño and Miso-Marinated Black Cod. There’s even eel on the menu for the more daring. Katsuya has become a hot-spot for the rich and famous, seeing everyone from the Kardashians to Kelly Osborne, Tom Hanks and newly engaged Jennifer Aniston dine here for its fantastic food and ‘place to be’ tag. Expect paparazzi outside most nights of the week (don’t be surprised if you get papped getting out of your car) and when we ate there we sat on a table next to Uma Thurman and the place was littered with film directors and stars. A great LA experience, even if the bill was $700.

S

cott Parons is a former drum and bass DJ who worked at a record company for many years. Feeling very unhealthy, inflexible and extremely over weight he was dragged to a yoga lesson by one of his mates because he liked the yoga teacher. From that day on Scott was hooked. Over the course of the next few years, frequent visits to India enabled him to study, become well practised and fully qualified to teach. Scott believes anyone can learn and at any age; yoga brings the body back into balance and into its natural alignment which is important in today’s busy work/life in-balance. As Director of Yoga Room, Scott shares a typical day with The Box magazine...

“ ”

I think that’s the best thing about teaching, to be able to share this amazing thing called yoga.

“I always try to start my day with my yoga practice. I practice the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga. I believe it is very important to practice what you teach so if I can’t practice first thing I will make time, even if it means jumping in on another teacher’s class at yoga room.

After a morning yoga session I always follow with my most favourite thing in the world; FOOD. I love a good breakfast; fruit, granola, eggs, avocado, juice, whatever I can get my hands on and lots of it. Today, a typical Tuesday, started with an acupuncture treatment on someone with a bad lower back pain. I treat a lot of backs, shoulders and knees at the moment. Most of which seem to be either posture or stress related by cause. Before I know it it’s 11am and as we have started a summer yoga workshop for children and teenagers I am on reception ready to meet them all. I love it; there’s a great energy having loads of kids running round ready to do some yoga. They are always very hyper before the class and then always very chilled when they leave. A Mother of one of the children is pregnant and moaned of a bad back. She is now 35 weeks and the toll of carrying a baby and the body changing has started to affect her. She asked me if I could do anything so I recommend an acupuncture treatment. That’s the beauty of having a treatment room here at hand. I tried to relieve some of the tension I could feel; acupuncture is

really one of the best treatments for lower back pain that you can get, but I would say that as I’m biased.

Next up I have a private yoga session. We have lots of people who come here for private lessons, which is wonderful to see. It’s a great way to learn yoga as you get the teachers whole attention for an hour and a half. We have many people come in that have injuries so private lessons are a great way for us to tailor a practice for the individual and their needs.

The day is flying by and by 4pm I am signing people into our community class. This is a free class that we offer . The idea behind it is so anyone can come here for free and experience yoga and our yoga room. We believe that yoga is so beneficial that we think everyone in our local community should be doing it so if they cannot afford to come or do not want to invest in our normal timetable class there is a way for them to practice, or at least try yoga. 5.30pm means I’m getting the room ready to teach as we have 20 people booked in for my beginners class. I love teaching this class as I feel it’s a real privilege to be able to share yoga with someone who might have never been before. To my delight there are 11 males booked in so for the second time this year there are more males to females which makes me think that there is now a real turn around in the stereotypical

view that yoga is just for girls. Many males are getting the benefits of yoga; most of the guys that come are from a sporting background and have found and seen the benefits of yoga in whichever sport they enjoy. At 7.30pm we have a hot yoga class. This is the busiest class of the day and I love the mix of people that come. Many start out at the hot classes because of the what we call the ‘side effects’ of yoga. The main one is weight loss and toning. The class finishes at around 8.45pm and it always has such a nice feel about it. People are totally relaxed and in a great space. Many of our clients say that they always sleep very well after a hot yoga class. At yoga room we really feel that we are building a community. People love coming in and being part of it. The best thing is when people report back to us on the positive changes they have seen both mentally and physically since they have started coming to yoga room. I think that’s the best thing about teaching, to be able to share this amazing thing called yoga. Even though we have a very traditional approach to how we teach we have given it a modern style and have tried to create a place where every member of the family feels welcome.” yogaroom.co.uk

“TEN YEAR IBIZA RESIDENCY”

The iconic music brand that is synonymous with gorgeous girls, glitz and glamour celebrated the 10th year of their spectacular Ibiza residency this summer. The parties have become a glistening jewel in the island’s calendar and the summer of 2012 did not disappoint with the ultimate in Hed Kandi hedonism at the legendary Es Paradis. Now a Balearic institution, Hed Kandi has just finished a 17-week season of debauched fun and escapism that has defined a decade of decadence on the White Isle. From hands-in-the-air feel good house tunes to spectacular production, distinguished DJs and unrivalled musicians, Hed Kandi transformed superclub Es Paradis into the ultimate Saturday night party destination in the dance capital of the world. For those of you unaware, Hed Kandi is originally a UK-based record label and music brand that was established in 1999 by Mark Doyle. It specialised in what they called Nu-Disco; a romantic blend of disco, house and club genres. Hed Kandi grew quickly to more than just album compilations; it began to host events around the world from their famous Saturday night parties in Ibiza to pool parties in Las Vegas. On the Ibiza front, Hed Kandi originally started with small underground parties in Ibiza Town’s Base Bar, with only very exclusive after-parties at Es Vive Hotel. Things then progressed to more extravagant, full season residencies at El Divino, Space and Es Paradis. Today the brand’s fiestas, album releases and ethos continues to define the sound and evolving lifestyle of not only Ibiza

but across the globe too. One thing’s for sure the brand is distinct, from its artwork to its tone. You can expect uplifting house, live saxophonists and percussion players in every corner of the globe with hundreds of nights taking place every year under the Kandi umbrella. Undoubtedly the record label has made endless CD collections, like Back to Love and Beach House, and it stood out to Ministry of Sound who paid an undisclosed sum in January 2006 to purchase the brand. Today you will see Hed Kandi bars, shops, merchandise and even FlyKandi as the The Brand partnered with Monarch Airlines to offer flights to various clubbing destinations in Europe such as Ibiza, Cyprus, Tenerife and Barcelona. With their clubbing roots now firmly set in Ibiza in particular, Hed Kandi’s Ibiza 10 Years parties showcased lavish live shows, world class DJs, exquisite dancers, mind boggling aerial artists and acrobats all beautifully co-ordinated throughout the summer to celebrate the big ten. No one can believe it’s been ten years in Ibiza already; testament that the brand must be doing something right. Here in Bournemouth you can enjoy Hed Kandi at Bar So every single month. The next dates for your diary are the first Fridays in October and November. So delectable you won’t want to leave come 6am. hedkandi.com

SOCIALBOX

THIS MONTH

Social Box takes a look at various events in the area. If you have something going on let us know

SUPPER CLUB @ THE PRINT ROOM Supper Club at The Print Room has really made the beautiful venue stand out from the crowd. Now the stunning longbar is being enjoyed every Saturday as a late-night venue with live music, DJs, great drink offers such as 2-4-1 cocktails until 11pm and you’ll often find the likes of Scarface or Blow being played on the huge screen they have on the back wall! It is about time this beautiful venue got the party crowd in so we’re pleased to see Supper Club on the social map. Supper Club is for the discerning crowd who want to keep it simple with good

people, good drinks and good music. Nothing more, nothing less. You can enjoy Supper Club as a latenight venue for tapas-style food (make sure you try the trio of mini-burgers and chorizo skewers) or as a place to be social and have some drinks with friends. Try something new this month and head down to Supper Club we say!

COCOLOCO @ BONSAI It’s Thursday which means there’s a buzz in the air as the place to be tonight is Bonsai lounge. Here Cocoloco bring a party like no other to the good people of Bournemouth! This venue has gone through some tough times (a few months ago they were close to being shut down) but with new investors, a new name, a new vibe and the Cocoloco tribe running Thursdays life could not be better for the stylish playground that is proving a social institution to the local area. The re-furb has taken the venue to the next level and most Thursdays

and Saturdays all tables are booked, the guest list is full and some of the area’s well-know faces can be found inside partying until the early hours. We popped down and enjoyed the 2-4-1 cocktails and the truly, amazing music courtesy of their resident DJs. Bonsai sure know how to host a party – it becomes addictive. See you there next week.

RHUMBAR OPENS ITS DOORS Attentive and friendly staff, a menu offering something different and Caribbean style surroundings to party in, Rhumbar is proving popular on the social scene. It’s been a hub of activity since opening its doors two months ago, which is great to see, and the tasty cocktails are going down far too well (we can report first-hand) The night we popped down was a busy Friday with their all-new Friday Club in full flow. As the drinks rolled the music got louder and their resident photographer papped arriving guests.

50 | Issue 1

Friday Club is about bringing everyone together for a party after work or before hitting a nightclub; it’s trendy, fun and has a great atmosphere. Rhumbar have various offers so pop in for a cocktail this month and enjoy the Caribbean party vibe on offer.

PENN CENTRAL'S NEW LOOK Local favourite, Penn Central in Parkstone, Poole temporarily closed its doors for an anticipated revamp that has seen a magnificent new menu served in even more spectacular surrounds. The re-launch party took place on the 3rd August, introducing a tantalising English Tapas style menu that cleverly deconstructs classic dishes to present them in moreish mini versions.

schedule of spectacular live music and events will provide a wealth of local entertainment. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8am-10pm, 7 days a week you can expect continental breakfasts, homemade dishes and signature cocktails. Sounds far too good to us!

The re-furb has fused contemporary interiors with an atmospheric space to eat, drink and relax; while a year-round

SIGNATURE SATURDAYS @ PRIVA The weekend already and where to take your dancing feet? Well one answer would be PRIVA nightclub in Bournemouth. PRIVA has established itself as one of the leading clubs in the area, renowned for its intimate club-style vibe, exclusive table service and some of the best DJs on offer. Saturday’s especially are bringing in the crowds with a real party atmosphere inside; if you visit on an extra-popular night you’ll be hard pushed to book a table and don’t expect anything less than bottles of Grey Goose out in force.

London’s finest DJs Sam Young, Chad Tyson and home-grown talent Charles Brafman all frequent the decks at PRIVA and we’ve heard there might well be some exciting developments to look forward to over the next few months. Let go of all your senses and escape at PRIVA each week, you won’t regret it...

GUYCODE

THIS MONTH

Dramas & unwritten rules; welcome to Guy Code! Addressing the funny, the hilarious & the rude

O

ver two million years ago cave men first walked the earth; they couldn’t talk, they didn’t wash and they were pretty dam ugly, but buried deep in their DNA was a set of un spoken rules, a ‘mantra’ some might say, a sixth sense that ruled their every action from when they woke until they fell asleep. Present day and that DNA code lies in every man in every country. We live by these rules, we die by these rules. If you’re not sure what we’re talking about listen up and take note, this is....

GUY CODE. In this first issue we are going to address the rules of the ‘wingman.’ We’ve all seen Top Gun and every guy needs an Iceman in their life. When the time arises, someone has to step up and, take one for the team to become the ultimate wingman. Most importantly the wingman should be a close and trustworthy friend, someone who knows how you think, how you tick, your taste in the fairer sex; like two strikers on a football pitch one-twoing through the opponents defensive to score the perfect goal . Although this guy is a close friend he should not be better looking than you, never too funny or too charming. This is a stealth mission - remember the wingman has to be seen and be heard but never remembered. The wingman has to make the first step, be it a table of girls at a club or a pair of 10’s at the gym, he has to be willing to make a fool of himself, prepared to crash and burn, dust himself off and move on to the next target if needs be. Great wingmen are married or in happy long-term relationships, this way they’re relaxed around women, with no hidden agenda and not going to steal your girl. The wingman is your eyes and your ears - if your deodorant is wearing off, breath is bad, have a hair out of place or have had too many beers your wingman is there to neutralise the situation quickly and discreetly. His job is still not done, in every group of women there is always one ‘man-hater’ also known as the ‘cock-blocker’; a woman who let’s just say hasn’t been the luckiest in the love department, usually living with at least two cats and who’s last boyfriend left her for someone both younger and slimmer. She is not happy and nor does she want to see her friends happy; this is often the wingman’s biggest challenge. Overcome this by talking about your cat ‘fluffy’ and she’ll be purring all night while your friend completes his mission.

52 | Issue 1

This leads us to taking one for the team. Unfortunately for us guys we don’t live in a world full of Victoria Secret models, so the time will come when the wingman has to get down and dirty so to speak, occupying the time of the girl’s notso-good-looking friend is all part of the role. Maybe even taking them home so your guy has the time and space needed to work his magic; this is most definitely the wingman’s biggest sacrifice. Lastly but by no means least, never forget to ‘big your guy up’ and this doesn’t mean talk about the last time he slept with three women in one night, but maybe mention the charity work for underprivileged kids or his recent promotion at work. Selfpromotion is so not cool, so leave this up to your wingman to do it for you. When all the wingman’s work is done, the one thing he must never forget? When to leave. So you get the girl, jump on your Harley and ride off into the sunset, but remember next time it’s your turn to be THE WINGMAN. Mission complete.

Dedicated to you. The extraordinary. The exceptional. The unique. THE box magazine.
