HAPPY KIDS, HAPPY MOTHER
(Re: Snack Attack 2024)
Thank you so much for your amazing Snack Attack 2024 contest! It got my kids to take healthy snacks to school — all without the usual peer pressure. Now there was a valid reason my kids could skip the junk!
Thank you so much,

A Happy Mother
Thank you for featuring articles that are worth the time it takes to read them. I appreciate articles that are true, enriching and serve some purpose.
Yaakov Astor is a great author and has a very powerful and rich writing style. His articles and stories come alive as you read them. His serial, No Place to Hide, is by turns frightening and heartbreaking, but Astor portrays so simply and poignantly what our grandparents suffered.

TO BEAUTIFY THE MITZVAH
(Re: Escape the Tablescape, Inbox, Issue 259)
I disagree with the letter writer who wrote that we shouldn’t put effort into making our meals as beautiful as possible. Anything we do to enhance Yom Tov shows our children how much we value the mitzvah.

HIRE HELP
(Re: Making It Work When Your Husband Works, Inbox, Issue 258)
To the working mom who wants to know how to make it work without your husband’s help: It’s not doable, and don’t try it with three or four little kids. The only way to make it work is with hired help. If your husband isn’t around to help (and your situation isn’t so unique; many aren’t), hire cleaning help, a mother’s helper or a babysitter, or any other kind of help that will take some of the load off your shoulders.

THE THIRD PARTNER
(Re: Making It Work When Your Husband Works, Inbox, Issue 258)
To the stay-at-home mother who wrote in last week: I am in the same matzav, baruch Hashem; my husband works and is not available to help me with the household or childcare. But don’t forget that there’s a third partner: Hashem.
Hashem is always ready and available to help, and He has the ability to do whatever you need and to work everything out for you. When something feels overwhelming, talk to Hashem: Hashem, please help me with the morning routine, please help me handle this child properly, please help my kids make the bus
Another helpful strategy is to give yourself some relaxing time. After all school-age kids are out of the house, take out a siddur and daven. Tell Hashem everything that’s on your

(Re: A Sweet Solution, Inbox, Issue 258)
You are 100% right that kosher candy produced by heimishe hashgachos should have Shabbos-friendly packaging. In fact, this past Shabbos, I realized I couldn’t eat the Shabbos treat I had bought myself because there was literally no way to open the wrapper without tearing the words. I called a very popular kashrus organization about this issue and recommended that hechsherim should only be given if the packaging is Shabbos-friendly. But I’m just one person. We need more people to speak up! If everyone called the manufacturers and kashrus agencies, hopefully something will change.

KINDEL CONUNDRUM
(Re: Kindel, An Heirloom Recipe, Issue 255)
I know this is late, but I was organizing my recipes this week, and I had to thank you for the beautiful and clear instructions on how to make kindel! I made it, and the results were gorgeous and tasty. However, every now and then there was this extremely bitter taste, which I attributed to the whole lemon. Or was it from the walnuts? If you know what I’m talking about, I’d like to hear how I can eliminate it. Should I use only lemon juice from now on?
Thank you for your enriching articles and recipes!
Gratefully,

DO YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO LISTEN TO HOTLINES? IF YOU DO,
HAVE YOU ESTABLISHED ANY RELEVANT
BOUNDARIES, RULES OR LIMITS?
Approximately 1 in every 5 parents do not allow their children to listen to hotlines at all.
52% of parents reported that they permit their children to listen to hotlines within limits.
Some rules parents have instated regarding listening to hotlines:
No phones in bed when going to sleep at night.
No using speakerphone if it is bothering others.
You must ask a parent before calling a hotline.
Maximum 30 minutes of listening time.
When Tatty comes home, you have to put down the phone to say hi and to tell him about your day.
No listening to news hotlines. Answer all beeps!
Have all of your homework done before you listen to any hotlines.
Hotlines are for bedtime only (to help the kids relax and drift off).
No making tznius kabbalos after listening to the tznius hotline without discussing it with a parent first.
No listening to hotlines during suppertime.
You can only use the home phone to call hotlines (so a parent can pick up another handset and monitor what children are listening to at any time).
When doing your after-supper cleanup job, you can listen to a hotline, but if it slows you down, you have to hang up.
My husband works in the teen chinuch line and witnesses firsthand the churban that many of these so-called heimish hotlines cause. Many of them have little or no proper supervision on what’s being aired, and kids are exposed to ideas that are not always in line with basic Torah values or the hashkafah of your home. – A Reader
I use hotlines to incentivize my kids to get ready for bed quickly. Once they’re ready, they can listen to a hotline for twenty minutes or so. There are so many beautiful ones out there, including lines with shemiras halashon inspiration and sipurei tzaddikim. – S.M.
My boys listen to hotlines all day. – A Reader
We only allow our children to listen to school or day camp hotlines. – A Reader

My eighteen-year-old daughter with Down syndrome likes to listen to the Rayim hotline. She knows the number by heart. I don’t set any rules because no one else needs that phone line, and it’s adorable to watch her color while listening to speeches and stories about families with special needs children. – A Reader
My children listen to the Aderaba hotline for a Shabbos story to retell at the Shabbos table, and of course, they listen to WonderWords. – A Reader
My son listens to Kol Mevaser and my daughter listens to WonderWords and her school hotline. – A Reader
My kids listen only to Torah-related hotlines like Skulen, Kinder Kol/Shtender’l and story hotlines. My girls listen to Tal Shel Tchiya and similar lines. I am so grateful to Hashem that my children have sources for such pure inspiration, which also serves as entertainment. – A Reader

Eliezer observed Rivka drawing water from the well, and he ran toward her. Rashi says, based on the Midrash, that Eliezer noticed that the water had risen to her.
Later, when Rivka ran once again to bring water, this time for Eliezer’s camels, the pasuk uses the term “she’ivah” — drawing. Here, the Ramban points out, the water did not rise toward Rivka, but she exerted personal effort to extract the water from the well.
Why the difference? If Rivka was worthy of the miracle, why didn’t the water rise toward her the second time as well?
WHEN THE FAMED MASHGIACH OF MIR, Rav Yeruchem Levovitz, zt”l, was a bochur, he went to learn in Kelm. It was during the final year of the great Alter of Kelm, zt”l
The Alter had been suffering from heart issues for several years already, and it was taking its toll on his physical strength. Still, the Alter never yielded. He never succumbed to his weakened reality and continued to keep his rigorous schedule exactingly. The Alter slept just two and a half hours each night, broken up into half-hour intervals so that he wouldn’t sleep too deeply. He also learned twelve consecutive hours every single day, in a standing position. It is told that the Alter created for himself a special rickety shtender that wasn’t strong enough for him to lean on.
The Alter was on a special diet, prescribed by his doctors, and he was sometimes forced to take a quick break and put some food in his mouth, even in the middle of davening
It happened occasionally that while delivering a shiur, the Alter would cough up blood. He would stop speaking for several moments, wait for the spurts of blood to stop, and then continue giving his shiur as if nothing had happened. Talmidim would see how after the shiur, the Alter would collapse, his energy completely spent.
Over the years, and especially in his final year, the Alter’s condition declined. Every step was accompanied by unimaginable pain.
This was the situation when Reb Yeruchem arrived in Kelm.
When Reb Yeruchem walked into the yeshivah for the first time, he saw an unbelievable sight. Near the entrance to the beis midrash, there was a “sink” for netilas yadayim. It consisted of a large barrel of water, which the talmidim would draw from and then pour above a large tub. And here was the shocking part: The Alter, in his elderly and weakened state, was carrying the tub full of water to be emptied.
Reb Yeruchem ran over to take the heavy tub from the Alter. The Alter shot him a sharp glance, and young Yeruchem froze. He sensed the objection flickering in the Alter’s eyes, scolding the bochur who just wanted to help. It was a look that intimated: Who are you to take away my zechus of serving those who come to the beis midrash?!
The Alter did not give in. He continued to carry the heavy tub on his own, emptied its contents, and put it back in its place. Only then did the Alter turn to the new bochur and welcome him.
Reb Yeruchem received his first mussar shmeuss that day.
He sensed the objection flickering in the Alter’s eyes, scolding the bochur who just wanted to help
Noach and his sons were chosen to found civilization anew.
Before they could accomplish this, they needed to spend an entire year serving all the animals and birds
“When the entire world was destroyed by the Mabul,” the Alter explained, “Noach and his sons were chosen to found civilization anew. Before they could accomplish this, they needed to spend an entire year serving all the animals and birds. Only in this zechus were they able to reestablish the world after its destruction. After all, as it says, ‘Olam chesed yibaneh.’ The world will be built through chesed.
“There is no greater zechus than doing chesed. The point of chesed is twofold. There is the actual chesed to be completed, and then there is the physical process of doing the chesed. Not just should the chesed be performed, but it should be done through personal physical exertion.”
This hands-on lesson made a strong impact and remained ingrained in Reb Yeruchem’s heart forever.

The Kedushas Levi says that the first time Rivka went to the well, it wasn’t for any particular mitzvah. She simply intended to fill her own jugs. Thus, as a worthy tzadekes, she merited the miracle of having the waters rise to her.
The second time, Rivka went to draw water for Eliezer. This time, it was for a chesed, for a mitzvah. Therefore, the water did not rise toward her, so she would merit not just the mitzvah itself, but also the zechus of the effort she exerted to fulfill the mitzvah.

Congestion Pricing Back on Track in NYC
Just days after Democrats crashed and burned in nationwide elections, congestion pricing was back on track for Manhattan’s central business district, albeit at a slightly discounted rate.
After pausing the plan last summer just weeks before it was set to be implemented, saying it was too much of a burden on hardworking New Yorkers, Governor Kathy Hochul championed its return at a November 14 press conference. According to reports, congressional Democratic leaders had asked Hochul last summer to postpone the controversial tolls until after the election in the hopes that the move would leave voters feeling indebted to the party, a strategy that clearly fell flat.
Drivers will be charged $9 to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street as of January 5 under the latest variant of congestion pricing, with higher tolls charged for trucks and certain discounts awarded for off-hour travel. The nation’s first congestion pricing plan is predicted to bring in $15 billion in revenue, which would be used to make much needed repairs to New York City’s mass transit system.
Trying to cast a positive spin on congestion pricing, Hochul had said that the $9 base price will provide drivers with $1,500 in savings each year over the initially proposed $15 toll. The governor’s suave pronouncements failed to impress New Yorkers who are already struggling with inflation, especially since sources have said that she intends to eventually increase the $9 base toll.
President-elect Donald Trump has already said that he will kill congestion pricing once he takes office, but that task may
prove to be difficult if the policy is already in effect when he takes over at the Oval Office. Congressman Mike Lawler was one of five Republicans who sent a letter to Trump asking him to rescind the Federal Highway Administration’s approval of congestion pricing, which would permanently axe the toll. A statement issued by Lawler slammed Hochul for reinstating the plan, categorizing it as “legalized theft” perpetuated by a governor and state government that is “out of control and out of touch with everyday New Yorkers.”
“Governor Hochul is trying to pick the pockets of New Yorkers to bail out the corrupt MTA’s waste, fraud and abuse, and that’s shameful,” said Lawler.
Shomrim Helps Police Apprehend Thief in Viznitzer Shul Break-In
Old-fashioned detective work by Shomrim helped lead police to one of three men who robbed the Viznitzer shul on 53rd Street last week, one of whom was seen in a wheelchair in surveillance footage.
The incident took place on the morning of November 14, with the unknown suspects fleeing the scene with a substantial amount of cash as well as multiple checks. Shomrim volunteers swung into action, combing surveillance video that showed the three walking a mile to their escape car, tracking the car using surveillance cameras located throughout Boro Park, and providing police with the car’s license plate information.
The car was spotted a day later in Flatbush, and Boro Park Shomrim worked hand in hand with Flatbush Shomrim and both the 66th and 61st police precincts. Officers deployed to the area located the getaway vehicle and remained on hand for several hours, arresting the suspect when he returned to his car. It is unclear if the other two suspects have been apprehended at this time.
Adams Becoming a Regular at Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Ohel?
Mayor Eric Adams paid a late-night visit to the grave of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, last week, the latest in a string of trips since the summer of 2021.
Adams reportedly stopped by the Ohel
shortly after midnight on November 13. Adams also paid his respects at the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s tzion on Erev Rosh Hashanah, and on four other occasions over the past four years, but sources have said that there have been many other undocumented visits.
While some categorized Adams’ trips to the Ohel as political stunts, City Councilman Kalman Yeger believes they have been heartfelt.
“I think he’s always had a strong connection to the Rebbe’s neighborhood and chasidim going back decades to when Adams was a state senator,” said Yeger. “It isn’t strange to me that he goes there for strength, inspiration, prayer, whatever. People go for different reasons.”
Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf echoed those thoughts, saying, “He’s in trouble. He’s a religious guy, and he’s going to pray. And it doesn’t hurt that Jews throughout the world hold the Chabad Rebbe in blessed memory.”
FedEx Truck Booted, Seized in BP Over Thousands in Unpaid Tickets
A regular stop at the Brooklyn Square Business Center turned out to be anything but routine for one FedEx driver, when city marshals ran his truck’s plates and discovered tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid tickets and violations.
The incident took place on the afternoon of November 14. The New York City Department of Finance Parking and Camera Violations’ records showed that the truck had $86,712.65 in outstanding fines, prompting city marshals to boot and confiscate the vehicle.
How the truck managed to rack up that amount in penalties and evade authorities remains unclear at this time.
FAA Greenlights NYPD Drone First-Responder Program
Law enforcement will be taking to the skies in the five boroughs now that the New York City Police Department has gotten permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to use drones to assist officers in their work.
Interim police commissioner Thomas Donlon and Mayor Eric Adams shared the news with the city at a November 13 press conference. As per the FAA, the NYPD will be allowed to launch its new drones from 1 Police Plaza, deploying them directly to the site of public safety calls in Brooklyn’s 67th, 71st and 75th police precincts, the Bronx’s 48th precinct, and Manhattan’s Central Park precinct. Two drones will be dedicated to each precinct and will be used to search for missing persons, monitor crimes in progress, and respond to alerts from the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system.
The drone first-responder program is an expansion of the NYPD’s current unmanned aircraft systems initiative, and marks the first time the FAA has issued a waiver to any police department in the country to utilize drones in this manner. The program will give the NYPD the ability to respond more rapidly to incidents, provide enhanced situational awareness, improve first-responder safety, allow for high-resolution evidence collection, and offer new search and rescue capabilities, in addition to other benefits. Adams applauded the program, citing its ability to provide more efficient policing and greater safety for both law enforcement and citizens.
“New York City is flying into the future as we keep New Yorkers safe,” said Adams. “While the ‘Drone as First-Responder’ program is what precision policing in the 21st century looks like, drone potential is really just taking off. We are leveraging the latest technology to enhance the NYPD’s emergency-response capabilities, remotely sending drones to the exact longitude and latitude of where an emergency call comes [from], and sometimes in as little as a minute.”
Recap: Perela cancels her Shabbos shift. Roiza is very bothered by this. At the last minute, Sruly agrees to stay for Shabbos. He mentions to Kaily that he wants to visit his father in England.
“Okay girls, catch!”
Mira held up a basket of little lace besomim sachets and started throwing them in the general direction of the women in attendance. Most of them held out their hands or ducked, laughing, to avoid the flying objects.
That’s what a Shabbos can do, Kaily mused. Take stiffshouldered, burden-carrying women and transform them into lighthearted girls — and it wasn’t only the massage that had softened their rigidity.
Mira’s penchant for calling them girls helped. It gave these women permission to laugh, to sing, to feel and to simply have fun.
She looked around at the fifty or so women. There were a number of new faces in the group, and they were easy to spot. Some of them were so young, they looked like schoolgirls. One or two were no older than twenty, and they’d already worn and discarded their wedding rings.
covering irrelevant. Backgrounds and minhagim fell away. They were truly sisters, helping each other shoulder their burdens.
On cue, Mira’s voice spilled into the mic, like a head counselor. “Ah gut voch, girls! Our Motzei Shabbos program is about to begin. See you all in the main dining room in five.”
The women filed into the dining room. The buffet was laden with every imaginable milchig hot dish, a churro station and a fish station.
“Cuz I’m staaarved! Shalosh seudos was, what, ten minutes ago?” joked Rivky, a newly-minted divorcee. She
THERE WERE A NUMBER OF NEW FACES IN THE GROUP, AND THEY WERE EASY TO SPOT. SOME OF THEM WERE SO YOUNG, THEY LOOKED LIKE SCHOOLGIRLS
It had taken the newcomers a while to warm up, to realize that they finally belonged. That no one was pointing fingers, no one was telling them, if only you had tried harder, the Mizbei’ach wouldn’t be shedding tears because of you.
Mira caught her eye, and they shared a moment of pride. This was why they did it. This was why they spent months hashing out every minute of the schedule.
And to think she’d almost missed all of this.
After Havdalah, the women mingled, age and head
promptly headed over to the buffet and piled a plate with salad and fettuccini. “These plates are too small!” she groaned. “They should have serving trays.”
“I’ll put in the request.” Mira’s eyes twinkled. She’d materialized out of nowhere.
Turning to Kaily, she whispered, “Kaily, it’s so special… It’s so close to my heart.”
For a moment it seemed to Kaily that Mira wanted to say more. But then she turned lightly and moved away.
“Okay! Tonight’s theme is Mind Over Me.” Mira’s eyes swept the crowd. “Our situation is what it is. I’m divorced, and if you’re here, you’re divorced, too.” She said it matterof-factly, yet with so much warmth. “Many of us are raising children. Some of us would love to raise our children. Each of us are similar, yet each of us is struggling with their individual challenges.”
Kaily looked around. Mira was so right. The young ones who were still shell-shocked, the older ones who had mostly accepted their lot — they were all struggling.
“Our minds drive us crazy,” Mira said. The women laughed. “Raise your hand if you’ve spent some nights ruminating with certainty about how no one will ever want to marry your children — let alone you!”
Every woman raised her hand.
“But your mind can also bring you to a place of peace. We have a hypnotist and an illusionist on schedule tonight. Both of them will show you the fallibility and flexibility of your mind.”
Mrs. Lenorovitch, the hypnotherapist, walked up to the stage. There was a comfortable chair and a little table prepared there for her.
“Ladies,” she said. Her voice was soft like cotton, her movements fluid and graceful. “The subconscious mind is fascinating. It’s like a storage facility, holding onto terabytes and terabytes of information. It forgets nothing from the moment you were born.”
“Really?” a woman asked.
The hypnotherapist nodded softly. “Every last bit.”
Kaily’s attention was riveted to the hypnotherapist. Though she had been the one to hire her, it was the first time she was seeing her in action.
Mrs. Lenorovitch spoke about hypnosis in general and about her experience in particular. The crowd laughed and cried as she shared stories of her work.
“First, I’ll do a demonstration on an individual, and then we’ll do a group activity, where I’ll put all of you in a trance for a few minutes.”
The women shifted.
“Will you find all of our dark secrets?” Rivky called out.
“I might,” Mrs. Lenorovitch said mysteriously. “Do I have a volunteer?”
“I’m terrified.” Rivky shuddered dramatically.
The magic was lost. But trust Mira in situations like this.
“Kaily,” she called, her undertone loud enough for the therapist to hear, “do it.”
“Kaily? Is that your name?” Mrs. Lenorovitch turned to her.
Kaily nodded.
“Come on up.”
Kaily walked up to the stage, scared to death. Mrs. Lenorovitch sat her down on a chair.
“Don’t be so scared.” She patted her arm.
Kaily tried to relax.
“Are you comfortable?”
“Yes.” How could she be comfortable sitting on stage in front of all these women?
“Okay, Kaily, what’s your calm color?”

them. They want to remain glued shut…”
And though Kaily knew she was being taken for a ride, she lost the ability to open her eyes. They remained tightly shut.
“Now… press your palms together. Like this.” She demonstrated. “Good. Intertwine your fingers and spread your index fingers apart.”
Kaily did as she was told.
“You’re not going to do something funny with me, right?” she said, shifting in the chair. What was I thinking?
“Don’t worry. Even though you’ll hopefully be in a trance, you’ll still be in control. Like if a dog comes, your fight and flight response will still be intact.”
“You’re weightless… You’re completely weightless… because the chair is holding all your weight. The weight of your head… The muscles of your neck…. Those tight, tight muscles… The chair is even holding your breath… your breath… your breath is slowing… your heart rate is slowing. You can’t even move your hands anymore… and you’re so, so relaxed…”
“DON’T WORRY. EVEN THOUGH YOU’LL HOPEFULLY BE IN A TRANCE, YOU’LL STILL BE IN CONTROL. LIKE IF A DOG COMES, YOUR FIGHT AND FLIGHT RESPONSE WILL STILL BE INTACT”
Kaily did as she was told. She held her palms tightly together and her two index fingers as far apart as she could.
“Now… look into the space between the two fingers, focus on some faraway point.
“Good... now you will feel the two fingers attracting. You don’t have to do anything. Relax… stare at your focal point… your fingers will naturally come together… slowly… slowly… Whenever it’ll happen, it’ll happen.
“It’ll happen…” The voice was soft and low. “Slowly… slowly…”
After a moment, she felt her fingers moving toward the center. In a detached way, she wondered about the magnetic field between her fingers.
“Now drop your arms… feel them falling down. Heavy… heavy… the chair is accepting the weight…”
The hypnotist continued talking. “Now close your eyes… Kaily, the muscles in your eyes are so, so relaxed… You don’t have to work hard to keep them closed…. Because they want to stay closed.”
Kaily wondered if she should try opening them.
“Even if you try, you cannot open
Kaily sat on the chair. In a remote corner of her brain, she knew who she was. She knew where she was. She knew she could move. But her limbs were so heavy. She couldn’t even twitch a finger or wriggle her toes. The chair was holding her in such a complete way, she thought it might break.
“You don’t have to do anything… just sit… weightless…”
“Blue… breathe in blue. Slowly… you’re breathing in blue… feel your lungs expand with blue… the serenity of blue. You’re completely wrapped in a soft bubble of calming blue air.”
Kaily breathed blue. In her mind she saw the soft blue sky coming to greet her.
“A bubble of blue. A floating, loving… all-encompassing bubble of blue. Ahh… slow blue breaths.” The voice was far away now, like a sweet faraway song.
Kaily’s breathing slowed. Deep blue breaths filled her. Her heavy limbs and eyes stayed glued to the chair, but she floated all the way to the clouds. She saw herself light and free and full of serenity. She allowed
her mind to empty completely.
Her mother’s issues rose before her eyes, then fell away… Sruly’s upcoming trip to see his father passed by and faded… she became sleepier and sleepier.
But before she could totally fly away forever, the voice continued.
“Now… together with me… you’re going to exhale orange and black. Good…. Inhale blue… Exhale… black… See the black and orange sand piling next to you. In with the blue… out with the black.
“Blaaacck… stress… blow out your stress… good… blow…”
It was getting harder to inhale blue and easier to exhale black. In her hypnotic state, she saw the pile of black and orange mounting.
Naftali is sick... Blow... Watching Sruly’s in-laws finish each other’s sentences… Blow… Levi and Leah… Blow… Sruly and Bina… Blow… Her mother’s health, or lack thereof… Blow…
When had all of her loved ones become black and orange stress sand?
She blew and blew and exhaled until she had no breath left.
“Now that you’re rid of your anger and your stress… I’ll take you down a path… okay?”
Kaily jerked her head. It was hard to nod.
“I want you to feel warm and protected before you come out of your trance. Okay? So I’ll lead you to a place of complete love so you can remain with that picture and carry it with you.
“I WANT YOU TO FEEL WARM AND PROTECTED BEFORE YOU COME OUT OF YOUR TRANCE. OKAY? SO I’LL LEAD YOU TO A PLACE OF COMPLETE LOVE SO YOU CAN REMAIN WITH THAT PICTURE AND CARRY IT WITH YOU
“Are you ready? A deep… deep…” Pause. “Breath. A blue breath.”
Slowly, the hypnotherapist painted a picture of a platform in her mind.
“Imagine standing on a platform and watching a train slowly drive by. You’re standing and counting. 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8… Each of the cars hold your memories… good memories… hard memories… confusing memories…”
Kaily saw herself, a small version of herself, standing on the platform. It was cool and darkish… and she was alone, counting.
“Count the cars… 9… 10…”
“When you reach the memory where you feel calm… loved… secure… stop the train, go inside that car, and retrieve that memory.”
Counting… counting… she saw herself sitting in the hospital with her mother, almost missing the Shabbaton… she saw the l’chaim… marrying off Chaim… Those images definitely did not hold that secure happiness the hypnotist was
talking about. Gedalia’s wedding… not the car she was looking for… Shouldering the finances… managing the childcare on her own… the difficult chinuch questions… not her car.
The train cars whizzed by slowly but surely. Ten cars… twenty cars… twenty-five cars… she saw herself struggling in a marriage that was not meant to be… holding Chaim for the first time, knowing that she could not give him the home she wished for…
More cars… the tracks rattled with her memories.
Yet she could not find a single car of security, love and support. She wanted to give up… come out of this stupid trance and tell Mrs. Lenorovitch that this experiment was cruel.
“Cars… Look into the cars… Look into each car. Every one…”
She peeked into the next car. Could this be the one? Her spine tingled as she looked into the lone window. Tatty? She missed him so much. She wanted to touch him, feel his touch, but she could barely move in her chair.
SHE PEEKED INTO THE NEXT CAR. COULD THIS BE THE ONE? HER SPINE TINGLED AS SHE LOOKED INTO THE LONE WINDOW
He was sitting next to Mommy in their offwhite upholstered armchairs. Both of them were exhausted and beaming. The Seder table was set in the background, and the two tall Mah Nishtanah candles were unlit at the head of the table. She stood peeking into the dining room — a much younger version of herself. She saw the navy dress, the white collar, the scalloped button band. She stood in awe as Tatty turned to Mommy and said, “Wow, Roiza, look where we’re up to.”
She stood at the train car, tears gathering in her tightly closed eyes.
The hypnotherapist stopped talking.
“Stay there… feel the security… the love… the security… while I bring you out of your trance.”
She didn’t want to come out of the trance… didn’t want to say goodbye to her father, to her mother who seemed so vibrant and strong. But in the same manner as she had gone into the trance, Mrs. Lenorovitch brought her back to the room.
She opened her eyes as if from a long sleep. She looked around the room. How long had she been in a different world?
The women looked at her curiously as she sluggishly rubbed her eyes.
“Kaily,” the therapist asked softly, “what’s the strongest feeling you have now?”
The strongest feeling? She knew the answer instantly. It was so strong, it left no room for any other thought.
Married. I want to get married again.
But aloud, she only said, “Better. I feel a little better.”

Chapter 19
Recap: The Roluks agree to shelter Rachel.
The day after the SS troops first arrived, they told the Roluks and others to leave their homes, because their homes were near the farms that the Germans were now going to occupy as part of their fight against the partisans.
Luckily, Mrs. Roluk knew of a house they could move into. It was once the home of a wealthy Jew. It had five rooms and two kitchens. There was also a large garden in the back with a creek running through it, and a well.
Early one morning in their new home, Rachel heard a commotion and looked out the window. She saw a group of about 500 skinny, disheveled prisoners being led down the street. They were wearing rags, and their feet were wrapped in some more rags instead of shoes. They were Jews, on what history would later call a “death march.”
“These are Hungarian Jews,” people in the market told Mrs. Roluk.
No one knew where they were being marched to or
what happened to them, but the image of their pitiful plight remained etched in everyone’s memory.
* * * * *
One day in early summer, Stephan Roluk came home from work in the SS office and whispered to everyone that he had heard that the Nazis were suffering huge defeats.
At 5:00 a.m. on June 22, 1944, exactly three years to the day that the Germans launched their surprise attack against the Russians, the Red Army launched a gargantuan surprise attack against the Germans. In the first month alone, more than 350,000 Germans soldiers were captured or killed, along with the complete destruction of 2,000 tanks and more than 50,000 other vehicles. The entire German Army Group Center — the backbone
Brilliance Go Pro
of the German force in Eastern Europe — simply ceased to exist.
Ivan Roluk had previously learned how bad the war was going for the Germans from his work as a conductor driving trains to the front. After the wounded were loaded onto his train, he drove them back to safer areas. As time passed, it became obvious to Mr. Roluk that the front was getting closer and closer. Each time he had to drive less of a distance to the front than the time before.
Although they could not tell anyone else, the Roluks knew how close the front was. The thought gave them hope
Rachel felt uncomfortable living next door to Nazis, but there was nothing she could do about it.
Suddenly, as she was bending over the pail of water she had filled, she heard a strange voice say, “Water.”
Of course, he was forbidden to tell anyone else how badly things were going for the Nazis. Even though there were not too many men with knowledge of the intricacies of train travel to replace Mr. Roluk, the Nazis would kill him and his family if information was leaked and traced back to him. In fact, the Germans made sure to accompany him home from the train station each night and monitor whom he spoke to. They did not let him go anywhere alone.
Although they could not tell anyone else, the Roluks knew how close the front was. The thought gave them hope. * * * * *
One morning, Rachel went outside to get some water from the well. It was an idyllic setting. The water was crystal clear, and the rhythmic sound of the rushing creek was peaceful.
It was so peaceful, in fact, that for a moment, she forgot that on the other side of the creek was a large, well-built stone house. It was a very unusual house because it had large electric poles with wires leading into it. The Russians had wired the house for communication back between 1939 and 1941. At some point since then, the Germans had taken over the house and made it the headquarters for their own communication network in the area.
She turned around and looked up. It was a tall, dark, intimidating man in a black SS uniform. She saw the skull and crossbones symbol on his black hat. She saw three stars on his lapel. She could even see a big green leaf on his uniform. (Later, Mr. Roluk would explain to her that the three stars meant he was a general, and the green leaf signified that he had fought in the epic battle of Stalingrad.)
But even without knowing his precise rank, Rachel froze. She could not lift her head.
The SS general came closer and repeated, “Give me the pail of water.”
Rachel was still too terrified to even move.
Suddenly, the Nazis hissed, “You look very suspicious to me. Are you a Jew?”
Rachel instantly dropped the pail, ran into the house and ran past Mr. Roluk. Without pausing, she ran out the back door as fast as she could and leaped across the creek into a swampy area with tall grass.
For most of the day, she stayed hidden in that swamp.
The SS general came back later that morning with a German shepherd. He told the Roluks that he suspected that Rachel was a Jew.
“What do you think,” Mr. Roluk said with a laugh, “that there are Jews left in Ludmir? You got them all, Herr General. No, she is the daughter of my wife’s sister. Her parents were killed, and her farm destroyed, so she moved in with
Oh, Eibeshter, Rachel thought to herself, please don’t let him recognize me.
us. There are no Jews left in Ludmir.”
The German believed him, or so it seemed, and he left.
Later in the day, when the sun started going down, Mr. Roluk came to the edge of the swamp and called, “Rachel, it’s safe to come out.”
Rachel emerged from the swampy brush. Looking at the creek, she realized that it was too wide for her to cross. Mr. Roluk found a piece of lumber and laid it across the creek, like a bridge, for her to walk over.
Rachel would later tell people that she didn’t know how she leaped across the creek in the first place. “It was a miracle,” she would say.
That whole night, Rachel could not sleep. Neither could the Roluks. Perhaps the SS general did not believe Mr. Roluk and would come back while they were all asleep.
The Nazis were on the verge of defeat. The Russians were just a few days away. Yet this general with medals for bravery had one thought on his mind: There was a Jewish girl he had to find and kill. *
The SS general did not have time to further his investigation because the very next day he received orders to move his troops out of Ludmir. He ordered Mr. Roluk to arrange for a train to carry about 500 wounded soldiers west. They would need about ten train cars.
“I can’t go with you if my family can’t come with me,” Mr. Roluk said. The Nazi agreed and let him add one car at the end of the train for his wife, his son and Rachel.
History records the day the Russians liberated Ludmir as July 22, 1944 (just two days after German officers tried to assassinate Hitler). However, Rachel left on the train with the Germans a couple of weeks before the Russians arrived.
They headed west and soon ar-

rived in Hrubieszow (pronounced Ruby-eshev), a town on the border of the original Russian-German armistice line of 1939. Mr. Roluk was ordered to pull the train into the station and prepare to pick up more wounded soldiers. To do so, he now needed to find at least ten more train cars. Then he would be able to take this very large transport of about one thousand wounded soldiers further west, toward the city of Lublin.
It wasn’t simple, arranging for those extra cars. It took him a couple of days. The wounded that could not move stayed on the train, but those who could move around — as well as about 20 non-wounded soldiers, including the SS general — disembarked. Mrs. Roluk, Stephan and Rachel also got off the train, but they stayed in a park a short distance away.
The next morning, Rachel woke up to the smell of hot bread and coffee, and she found the Germans cooking food. Since she was hungry enough not to worry, Rachel took a pan and got on line like everyone else. When it was her turn, the German cook looked at her.
Rachel looked back at him. “Nu? ” she said insistently.
Then she heard him say to the cook next to him, “She doesn’t look like a Pole. She looks like a Jew.”
Oh, Eibeshter, Rachel thought to herself, please don’t let him recognize me. Let him give me the food, and let me walk away as if nothing happened.
Her prayer was answered. The cook put a small amount of food in her pan and motioned for her to go.
But now she was even more afraid, not only of the SS general, but of every German. Somehow, they suspected she was Jewish.
When she returned to Mrs. Roluk, she told her what happened and said, “I’m not going to get food anymore. I’m too afraid. Please get it for me.”

BEDTIME: THE TEEN VERSION
It’s been a long day, but things are finally winding down. The little ones are in bed, after numerous just one more drink and one more very important thing I forgot to tell you. You gravitate toward the kitchen, thinking a nice steaming cup of peppermint tea would be just the thing to relax with before you head off to dreamland. You sit down on the couch with your steaming cup and copy of The Boro Park View… when an eruption of rollicking laughter shatters the peace. While you were treasuring thoughts of a blissfully early night, your teenagers have no such plans.
Is there such a thing as bedtime for teenagers? Is it something that parents can enforce? How much sleep do teenagers actually need? My conversation with today’s top parenting experts was very eye-opening. How can we get our teenagers to get enough sleep, without turning bedtime into a battlefront?
PUTTING THE HOUSE TO SLEEP
REBBETZIN LEAH TRENK
“People — and this is true for people of all ages — go to sleep when they’re tired,”
Rebbetzin Trenk states. Forget all the fancy talk about circadian rhythms and how many hours teenagers really need. “If you’re tired, then you’ll go to sleep. And if you’re busy with other things, then at least you’re accomplishing something!”
Rebbetzin Trenk reminisces about the home she was raised in. “Our house was the most happening house. There was always stuff going on. My mother ran the Nshei, she ran the Bnos… but she would never make us go to sleep when there was something exciting going on. Who wants to go to sleep when there’s a party downstairs?”
So how do you put teenagers to go to sleep?
“You can’t put teenagers to sleep,” the Rebbetzin says. “You can teach them to go to sleep at a decent hour by modeling good sleeping habits. You need to have positive discussions with your kids in a loving way to communicate that sleep is important for us in order to recharge and have the ko’ach to accomplish things the next day. But you can’t put them to sleep.”
If you, like me, find this tough to swallow, Rebbetzin Trenk suggests an idea I really connect with.
“I like doing something I call ‘putting the house to sleep,’” she says. “I slowly get the house (and its inhabitants) to wind down for the night. I shut some of the lights, slow down my activities, and signal that it’s time for the day to come to a close.
“It’s important to really think about the reasons you want your children to go to sleep — and this applies to children of any age. Is it because you really think it’s important for them to go to sleep at this specific hour, or is it because you’ve ‘had it’ and you finally want some peace? We need to focus on those important moments that we have with our children, and not rigidly stick to a schedule we imposed on them.”
Rebbetzin Trenk recalls that when she grew up, they never went to sleep before their father came home. “Children should see their Tatty every day, and get to tell him good night. If my father was running late one day, we would stay up later so that we could all run and tell him good night before we went to bed.”
She ends with some perspective. “Every single Yiddishe child is a son or daughter of the king. If you were chosen by the king for the honor of taking care of the royal prince or princess, how would you treat that child? You would be careful about how you speak to that child, and you would treat the child in a manner that befits royalty. Our children deserve no less.”
Rebbetzin Leah Trenk has been giving parenting classes for over 30 years across a varied spectrum of communities. She currently coaches parents and couples individually.
WORTH THE BATTLE?
MRS. RIVKA LEVITANSKY
Mrs. Levitansky first defines what exactly a teenager is. “The teen years are roughly from ages eleven to eighteen. How you handle an elevenyear-old is very different from how you are going to handle an eighteen-year-old. Of course, every child is different. With some children, you can continue doing things the way you were doing them until now for a little longer. With other children, they reach that teenage stage a little earlier.”
There is one caveat, however. “If your teenager is struggling in any way, whether with Yiddishkeit or in other areas, bedtime is a very small issue, and is never worth fighting about.”
Mrs. Levitanksy notes that “most people are sleep-deprived, and teens are no different. But it’s better to be sleep-deprived than to be miserable, and making it into a battle is a sure way to make kids miserable. If you’re fighting about bedtime, then you are ruining your relationship with your child.
“Teenagers are really mini adults. In our eyes they may still be children, but they see themselves as adults. Nevertheless, we need to speak to them and treat them respectfully. This doesn’t mean that you can never say no, but you have to limit the times you say no. There shouldn’t be too many things in their lives that they are being made to do grudgingly.”
Mrs. Levitansky explains that our children are far more likely to listen to us if they feel that we’re listening to them.
“Take the time to talk to them, to shmooze with them. Especially your bochurim — they have so little downtime. They come home late, and they have very little time to unwind before they have to go to sleep, since they have to wake up early. But they still need that time to shmooze with their parents and be listened to. If you work on maintaining that relationship where the child doesn’t feel they’re being arbitrarily forced to abide by their parents’ rules, it will be much easier to gain compliance.”
Today’s environment is often tough on parents. We want to do our best, but we’re bombarded with so many messages, we often feel as if we’re doing everything wrong. Mrs. Levitansky has some words of comfort for today’s parents.
FROM THE TRENCHES
MOMMY Z.
Mommy Z. has children ranging from marrieds to babies, with plenty of teens and tweens in between. As a mother in the trenches, she developed her own unique, loving method to get teenagers to go to sleep.
“You can’t just look at ‘going to bed’ as an isolated part of parenting,” Mommy Z. says. “Everything depends on the relationship that you’ve built with your children. If you have a healthy relationship with your children, then going to bed is something that they just ‘do.’”
Mommy Z. developed her own method of putting her kids to sleep lovingly when they were very little, and she still continues that to some degree even when they’re older, although modified for their ages. Each child goes to bed individually, and they get their own time to tell her the stuff that is important to them. “We call this shmoozing time, and that’s when all the important things come out. We also have a few songs that we’ve made up over the years, and we sing these together. These songs have become such an integral part of my children’s childhood that one of my sons actually asked for one of ‘our’ songs to be played as he walked down to the chuppah.”
Mommy Z. recognizes that this approach may seem to take up a lot of time, but she says, “It’s an investment. The tradeoff is that
“Don’t beat yourself up for not being a perfect parent,” she says. “Nobody is perfect. Even tzaddikim are not perfect. The only One who is perfect is Hashem. You should see yourself as a work in progress, striving toward being the best possible you, but never expect perfection from yourself.
“You won’t get everything right, and that’s okay. Try to focus on the three most important parts of a child’s day: When they leave in the morning, when they come home, and when they go to sleep. If you can try to do these in a way that makes your child feel loved and secure, then you’re doing a great job.”
Mrs. Rivka Levitansky has been giving Positive Parenting teleconference courses for over twenty years. She also offers private coaching and speaks for schools in different cities on the topic of parenting. For information about her courses, call 347-644-0440 or email positiveparenting4u@gmail.com.
there is no friction or negativity associated with going to sleep, and the children go to bed each night knowing that they’re loved.” Her thinking is that going to sleep is simply another way to show your children how much you love them, and if done lovingly, bedtime will never be a source of friction or negativity.
But what about when the family dynamic changes over the years? What about when the marrieds are coming for supper and the household is busier and more hectic?
“When we have couples over, it can get a little more complicated, that’s true. Sometimes I’ll modify this approach and put two kids to bed at the same time.”
Mommy Z. has proof that it pays off. “Once, as I was leaving the kids’ room, one of my kids piped up, ‘How come you love me the best?’ The next kid instantly interjected, ‘Nuh uh! Mommy loves me best!’”
Regarding older teenagers, Mommy Z. contends that you can’t really put a teenager to bed.
“They’re at that age where they feel like they want to disconnect from their parents for a bit, but really, they need you more than ever. You can’t pounce on them and force them to go to bed. You can encourage it, but you cannot force it. One thing I do enforce, though, is no phones after eleven.”
THE GIFT OF APPROVAL
MRS. DEVOIRY SILBERMAN
Mrs. Silberman says that bedtime was never a battle in her home, even with teenagers, because if children are raised in an environment of mutual respect where there is a strong foundation of love and harmony, they will automatically be more willing to listen to their parents.
“One of the most important things we can do is to train ourselves to stop complaining about our children’s behavior, both verbally and in our inner dialogue. Most of us don’t even notice that we disapprove of our teenagers quite often, because it can be a very subconscious thing. But if you tune in to your thoughts, you’ll notice that every time you say, ‘He’s going to sleep late,’ you’re disapproving

of them, and the only thing that disapproval accomplishes is that it makes your child feel bad about himself.
“If you want to create a really powerful shift, you need to start sending messages of love and approval to your teens as often as you can. This will help improve your relationship with your teens, and they’ll be much more likely to listen to your advice.”
Mrs. Silberman suggests that when you feel as if you’re constantly nagging your teens to go to bed, tune in closely to your inner self. You might notice that the unhappiness about the situation feels like disapproval to your teen. Take a minute to ask yourself if the disapproval has helped you in any way. It probably hasn’t. And if that’s the case, you might as well try something different. Can you let go of disapproving of your teen? It can be as simple as a decision. You can decide to let go of disapproving of your teen and instead give her some approval “just because.” And then give her even more approval! And just keep giving her approval, because that feels much better than consistently giving her disapproval.
“If you want to take this a step further,” Mrs. Silberman says, “you might notice that you’re also disapproving of yourself. You might be frustrated with yourself: ‘Why can’t I get my teenager to go to bed on time?’ Ask yourself if disapproving of yourself has moved you forward in any way. It probably hasn’t. It’s time to let go of disapproving of yourself and to give yourself some love and approval instead. We all thrive in environments that are loving, and that also means being loving to ourselves.”
Mrs. Silberman notes that this does not mean that we shouldn’t set boundaries or work on getting our children’s cooperation. “It’s completely okay to set normal, reasonable boundaries. But when they come from a place of approval and positivity, our teenagers are much more likely to understand that it’s for their own good and is coming from a place of love.”

As twilight settles in and the street lights turn on, we begin to truly experience tzeis hakochavim — the emergence of the stars — as the Shamayim opens up, revealing Hashem’s magnificent array of stars and planets. While the sight alone can inspire us, the impact is even greater when we begin to recognize the chochmah behind the precise and predictable placement and movement of the planets and constellations.
Stargazing offers a peaceful escape into the cosmos, and with a bit of guidance, you can enjoy this activity right from your backyard. Whether you’re new to stargazing or looking to enhance your experience, this guide will help you get started with simple techniques and tips for spotting and identifying specific stars and constellations.
GETTING STARTED WITH STARGAZING
I still remember my first attempt at stargazing, when as a kid in the 1970s, my father and I schlepped out in the middle of a cold winter night to an open field to spot the muchtalked-about comet Kahoutek. The comet was supposed to light up the night sky like fireworks. Well, it ended up being more of a fizzle than a flare, but the thrill of that first cosmic chase still inspires me decades later.
Before you dive into your own astronomical adventure, here’s a basic guide to help you get started.
Timing Is Everything
Stargazing is best done on a clear night. Check the weather forecast to ensure that the sky will be clear.
Location, Location, Location
Light pollution from city lights can obstruct your view. If possible, find a location away from urban areas for best visibility conditions.
From Twilight Zone to Comfort Zone
Stargazing takes time, and as we know, time flows much more quickly when we’re comfortable. Set up a comfortable spot in your backyard or nearby park. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to make your experience more enjoyable, and perhaps some snacks, too! A relaxed environment will help you focus on the sky rather than any discomfort.
More Than Meets the Eye
It takes about thirty minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Avoid looking at bright lights or screens during this time to maintain your night vision. (It may be a good time for hisbodedus for those so inclined…) Allowing your eyes to adapt will make it easier to see faint stars and constellations. While stargazing isn’t for the impatient, I find that seeing what seemed like a sheet of darkness turn into a star-studded spectacle is worth the time and effort.
Keep It Simple
It’s best to keep it simple — at least at first. While advanced equipment can enhance stargazing, you don’t need fancy gadgets to start. However, a basic star map or constellation chart can be very helpful. These maps show the positions of major stars and constellations.
The Feminine Touch
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Once you’re comfortable and your eyes have adjusted (and you’re out of nosh), you can start looking for specific stars and constellations. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for in the Tristate area during different seasons.
Note: A constellation is a group of stars that form a recognizable pattern in the sky, often named after animals, people, shapes or objects. These names help us identify and remember them in the night sky. However, spotting these shapes can be tricky because the stars are spread out, and the patterns can appear a bit abstract. So, while it can be interesting to know the names and stories behind constellations, it often takes a good amount of imagination to actually see the shapes they’re said to form.
SUMMER SKYLIGHTS
In the summer, the Summer Triangle is easy to spot in the night sky. It’s a big, bright triangle made up of three stars: Vega, Deneb and Altair. Vega is the brightest and is high up in the sky. Deneb is part of the constellation Cygnus, which is said to look like a swan, and Altair is in the constellation Aquila, which looks like an eagle. These three stars form a clear, noticeable triangle and can serve as guideposts to help you find your way around the night sky.
FALLING UP
When fall comes around, you can spot the Great Square of Pegasus in the sky. It’s a big square made of four bright stars and is part of the Pegasus constellation, named after a mythical flying horse. (I guess whoever named it was seeing… stars). This
square is useful for finding other celestial objects. For example, if you follow an imaginary line extending from the top-left corner of the square (the star Alpheratz), it will lead you toward the Andromeda Galaxy, a group of some trillion (!) stars, which appears as a faint, smudgy patch of light in the night sky.
WINTER WONDERS
In the winter, look for Orion, the Hunter. It’s one of the easiest constellations to recognize. You’ll see Orion’s belt, a line of three stars. On either side of the belt are two bright stars, Betelgeuse and Rigel, marking Orion’s shoulders and feet. Orion’s belt can help you find other stars, like Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, by following the belt downward.
SPRINGING FORWARD
In the spring, look for Leo the Lion. This constellation looks like a backward question mark and is highlighted by the bright star Regulus, which is supposed to represent the lion’s heart. Leo’s shape and bright star make it easier to spot as the weather gets warmer.
SUPER-STARS
As mentioned, most specific stars and constellations appear only during certain seasons. However, the Big Dipper and the North Star are visible throughout the year, making them essential references for stargazers.
The Big Dipper
The Big Dipper is one of the most recognizable groups of stars. Although it’s not technically a constellation on its own (it’s part of the larger Ursa Major, which means the Great Bear), it’s often used as a guidepost to find other stars and constellations. Its distinctive shape — like a ladle or dipper — is easy to spot, even in light-polluted areas. In the spring and summer, it appears higher in the sky, while in the fall and winter, it sits lower on the horizon. (Whether one may use it to ladle out his cholent, I would imagine, depends on the size of one’s cholent pot — and one’s appetite.)
The North Star (Polaris)
Polaris, commonly known as the North Star, is famous for its fixed position in the sky directly above the North Pole. For centuries (before Waze and even GPS), travelers and sailors used Polaris to navigate, as it always directed them north. What makes it even more fascinating is that while other stars appear to move across the sky due to Earth’s rotation, Polaris remains nearly stationary, serving as a reliable beacon for anyone seeking direction.
To find Polaris, locate the Big Dipper. The two stars at the outer edge of the Big Dipper’s “bowl” act as pointers. Draw an imaginary line through them and follow it upward, and you’ll land on Polaris. While it isn’t the brightest star, its steadfastness makes it a stargazer’s best friend when trying to get their bearings.
The Milky Way, our own galaxy, contains over 100 billion stars, but from Earth, we can only see about 2,500 of them with the naked eye on a clear night.
The North Star is not the brightest star in the night sky, though many believe it is. Sirius, often called the Dog Star, holds the title of the brightest star, visible from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
While stars twinkle, planets shine steadily. If you’re unsure whether you’re looking at a star or a planet, check for twinkling. Stars twinkle because they’re so far away that their light reaches us as tiny points, which get distorted by the Earth’s atmosphere. Planets, being much closer, appear as larger, steadier disks of light.
Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has a storm called the Great Red Spot, which is so large that the entire Earth could fit inside it! This storm has been raging for at least 400 years.
The Andromeda Galaxy, our closest neighboring galaxy, is moving toward our galaxy, the Milky Way, at around 250,000 miles per hour. But don’t worry; they are still so far away from each other that even at that speed, it would take billions of years for them to collide.
If you’re stargazing in the fall, you might catch sight of the Perseid meteor shower, one of the brightest and most reliable meteor showers of the year, peaking in August with up to 60 meteors per hour.
In the times of the Gemara, stargazing was used for practical purposes. The Gemara (Eruvin 56a) refers to the use of constellations as a navigation tool, highlighting how the Yidden in the desert would look at the constellations to find their direction.
GESHMAK GAZING
Stargazing is a wonderful way to connect to niflaos haBorei and enjoy a peaceful night under the stars. By following these tips and using simple tools like star maps, you will make the most of your stargazing experience.
Start With Easy Targets
If you’re new to stargazing, begin with constellations that are easier to spot. Orion’s belt and the Big Dipper are great starting points. Once you’re comfortable finding these constellations, you can move on to more challenging ones.
Besides these, there’s an array of planets that can be easily seen and recognized. Although, unlike stars, planets don’t glow, they’re lit up by the sun just like the moon is.
VENUS (Kochav-Nogah in Lashon Hakodesh): Often visible just before sunrise or just after sunset, it’s the brightest planet and looks like a very bright star.
MARS (Ma’adim): Appears reddish and can be seen in the evening or early morning, depending on its position in its orbit.
JUPITER (Tzedek): Looks like a bright, steady star and is usually visible in the evening or late night. It can be seen all year.
SATURN (Shabtai ): Also visible in the evening or late night, Saturn appears as a bright star with a slight golden hue.
Enjoy the Moment
Stargazing can be more than just spotting stars; it’s about enjoying the experience of quiet, focused time with your mishpacha or chevrah. Somehow, gazing at the night sky awakens something in our neshamos, and taking the time to relax and enjoy your peek into Shamayim will make the experience even more memorable.
The night sky is constantly changing, offering new constellations and celestial events throughout the year. So next time the sky is clear, step outside, look up, and bask in Hashem’s ultimate lightshow right above your head.

Dreams are a profound part of our tradition. The topic is woven into the fabric of the Torah, Tanach and Gemara, where it is often seen as a glimpse of the hidden ways Hashem interacts with the world.
The Gemara teaches us that while dreams are not the same as a prophecy, they are still a “sixtieth of prophecy.” They can carry messages that inspire, comfort and sometimes guide us in ways we don’t fully understand.
Rav
Ovadia’s Dream
Rabbi David Ashear tells the following story:
Gevura Cohen (not her real name) was a poor widow living in Arad in Eretz Yisroel, where she raised her children on her own with no real source of income. Every day was a struggle.
One day, when the weight of her suffering became too much to bear, Gevura decided to travel to Yerushalayim to seek help from the great Chacham Ovadia Yosef. She reached his home, exhausted and desperate, and was met by his gabbai. She pleaded, “Please, I am broken. I need to see the Rav, even if it’s just for a moment.”
Seeing her sincerity, the gabbai brought her in, and soon she found herself standing before the great Chacham Ovadia. But as she tried to speak, her words were swallowed by tears. She had prepared what to say, but the moment overwhelmed her, and she began sobbing uncontrollably.
Finally, she managed to pour out her heart, explaining her impossible struggle to make ends meet and raise her children alone. “I didn’t come for a bracha,” she said through her tears. “I came for money. I can’t survive anymore. I need your help.”
THEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED: CHACHAM OVADIA YOSEF PASSED AWAY. HIS PASSING WAS A TREMENDOUS LOSS, NOT JUST FOR GEVURA COHEN, BUT FOR THE ENTIRE JEWISH WORLD
Chacham Ovadia listened intently. After a moment, he reassured her, “Don’t worry, I will help you.” He filled an envelope with money and handed it to her. Gevura’s tears turned to relief as she collected herself, feeling a sense of hope that she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Chacham Ovadia then said, “This is for now, but I want you to come back every month. Every month, I will have an envelope ready for you. But please, don’t tell anyone. This is just between us.”
Gevura Cohen returned the next month, and the envelope was there, just as promised. Month after month, she continued to receive Chacham Ovadia’s support, which allowed her to provide for her family. This went on, not for one or two years, but for seven years straight. Chacham Ovadia made sure she had what she needed without fail.
Then the unthinkable happened: Chacham Ovadia Yosef passed away. His passing was a tremendous loss, not just for Gevura Cohen, but for the entire Jewish world. The great sage who had held up the spiritual foundations of the community was gone. But for Gevura Cohen, his death was more than just the loss of a beloved leader; it was the end of her lifeline.
After five months of trying to survive, Gevura Cohen reached her breaking point. With no other options, she boarded a bus to Yerushalayim and made her way to the kever of Chacham Ovadia. She stood at his grave,
intending to speak, but instead, she burst into tears. For three hours, she cried and prayed, pouring out her heart as she recited the entire Sefer Tehillim
Finally, drained and exhausted, she returned home, fell into bed, and slipped into a deep sleep. That’s when she had a dream.
In the dream, Chacham Ovadia appeared to her.
“Stop crying,” he said gently. “Don’t worry. I will continue helping you, just like I did when I was alive.” He then told her something astonishing. “This Thursday, at 1:00 p.m., there will be a bris at the Beit Yisrael shul in Yerushalayim. You will find a man there named Shalom. Go up to him and tell him that I sent you.”
Rabbi Joey Haber tells this powerful story, often told by Rabbi Meilech Biderman, shlit”a
A man with a dozen children and countless grandchildren told a story: “I had been married for just two weeks when my mother-in-law called me. She criticized everything about me — who I was, my character, my actions, everything. She didn’t hold back at all. When I hung up, I was completely shell-shocked. I mean, who starts a marriage like that, just two weeks in?”
Feeling devastated, he ran to Rabbi Roth, a rav in Eretz Yisroel. After listening to the whole story, the rav asked, “Did you tell anyone about this phone call?”
“No,” the man replied.
“Did you tell your wife?” the rav asked. “No,” the man said again.
“Did you tell your mother?”
“No.”
Rabbi Roth looked at him and said something unexpected: “Good. Then it was just a dream.”
WHEN SHE WOKE UP, GEVURA FELT A MIX OF FEAR AND HOPE. WAS THIS REAL? WAS IT A SIGN? SHE KEPT THE DREAM TO HERSELF AND DID NOT TELL A SOUL
When she woke up, Gevura felt a mix of fear and hope. Was this real? Was it a sign? She kept the dream to herself and did not tell a soul.
On Thursday, she made her way to the shul before 1:00 p.m. Just as the dream had foretold, people were gathering for a bris Gevura couldn’t believe how accurately Chacham Ovadia had described it. She started asking around, “Do you know someone here named Shalom?”
Finally, she found him. Nervously, she approached him and told him the whole story, from her visit to Chacham Ovadia’s kever to the dream she had. As she mentioned the bris, Shalom nearly fainted.
Shalom explained that in his younger years, he had worked to spread Torah through the radio. Chacham Ovadia had once given him a bracha that he should have great parnassah, and it had come
Just A Dream
“What?” the man stammered. “What do you mean, just a dream? It wasn’t a dream; I was on the phone and heard every word she said. It was real!”
Rabbi Roth remained calm and repeated, “It was just a dream. It never happened. It was just a dream.”
The man was bewildered but trusted his rav’s advice. He went home and didn’t say a word to his wife, his mother or anyone else. He acted as if nothing had happened.
Two weeks later, his mother-in-law called again, this time with a different tone. “I want to apologize for what happened two weeks ago,” she said.
The man played along. “What happened two weeks ago?”
“Don’t you remember? I yelled at you.”
The man, smiling inside, said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Maybe you were dreaming.”
“No, it wasn’t a dream,” she insisted. “I remember everything I said.”
He continued, “Are you sure? Did you talk to my mother about it?”
“No,” she said, “your mother doesn’t know anything.”
“See?” the man replied gently. “It must have been a dream.”
The mother-in-law paused, reflecting. “Maybe you’re right,” she finally said. “Maybe it was just a dream.”
The man told Rabbi Biderman, “All these kids, all these grandchildren, all of it… it’s all because of that dream.”
Rabbi Haber used this story to highlight a profound truth: Life, especially marriage, doesn’t always go as planned. When you get hit unexpectedly, when things don’t align with your hopes and dreams, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But if you have the right mindset, if you can turn those moments into “just a dream,” you can respond with grace and resilience.
Hashem wants us to build something enduring — not a fragile house of Legos, but a skyscraper that stands tall for generations. This man’s legacy, all those children and grandchildren, are the beautiful result of transforming a harsh reality into “just a dream.”
7THANNIVERSARY
true — Shalom had become a very wealthy man. But then he confessed something remarkable.
“I don’t know anyone here at this bris,” he said. “I’m only here because Chacham Ovadia came to me in a dream and told me to stop by today. He said I would meet a widow who needed help.”
The two stood there, overwhelmed by the clear guidance
from Heaven.
Then Shalom asked, “How much did Chacham Ovadia give you each month?”
“Four thousand shekel,” she replied, her voice shaking.
Shalom took a deep breath and said, “From now on, I’m going to give you 4,000 shekel on behalf of Chacham Ovadia and another 4,000 shekel from myself. You’ll receive 8,000 shekel a month as long as I’m able.”
Dreams: How Do We Know What’s Real and What’s Not?
In our mesorah, dreams are often spoken of as carrying messages, but we’re also warned not to get too caught up in them. Chazal give us general guidelines to help us figure out when a dream might have a deeper meaning. Here are some of them.
1. Most dreams reflect our daily thoughts
The Gemara in Brachos (55a) reminds us that many dreams are simply a result of what we’re thinking about or worried about during the day. If someone is stressed or thinking a lot about something, it can show up in their dreams. Those dreams aren’t meant to be messages from Hashem; they’re just the mind processing daily life.
2. Dreams are a sixtieth of nevuah
The Gemara in Brachos (57b) tells us that dreams are “one-sixtieth of prophecy.” This means that dreams can have a tiny hint of nevuah, but they’re not actually prophetic.
3. Even true dreams have meaningless elements
We learn from Yosef Hatzaddik’s dream that even dreams carrying true messages can have meaningless or absurd elements. In Yosef’s second dream, “the sun and the moon” represented his father and mother bowing to him. Yaakov Avinu questioned this, pointing out that Rochel, Yosef’s mother, had already passed away. Although the dream’s core message was true — Yosef’s brothers eventually bowed to him — this detail about his mother was impossible.
From this, Chazal teach us that “there is no dream without meaningless parts” (Brachos 55b), reminding us that even real dreams may contain elements that don’t come to pass.
4. Three signs of a real dream
The Gemara (Brachos 55b) identifies certain signs that help distinguish between regular dreams and those that might carry more weight:
Dreams near dawn: Dreams close to the time of waking are more likely to come true, as the Gemara says, “A dream seen in the morning is more reliable.”
Dreams that repeat: The Gemara explains that the repetition of a dream, like Pharaoh’s dream recurring twice, indicates that “the matter has been firmly decided by Hashem” (Bereishis 41:32).
Dreams that leave a strong impression: The Gemara suggests that dreams that leave a deep emotional impact, particularly those that trouble or disturb the dreamer, may hold significance. Chazal explain that such dreams may deserve attention or interpretation, as their emotional weight could indicate they are more than just ordinary thoughts. (See below for how to respond to troubling dreams.)
5. Dreams follow their interpretation
The Gemara (Brachos 55b) says that dreams can be shaped by how they are interpreted. It’s a reminder to be careful about how we view dreams and, if we think a dream is important, to seek proper guidance in understanding it. The interpretation can impact how the dream plays out.
6. Turning to tefillah
If a dream troubles you, the best response is tefillah. Chazal gave us the special tefillah of Hatavas Chalom (Brachos 55b), which can help turn a negative dream into something positive. Reciting this tefillah allows us to hand over our concerns to Hashem and ask Him for good outcomes, no matter what the dream seemed to suggest. Tefillah is always the best response, whether a dream is troubling or uplifting.
Shabbos Miracle on October 7
Rabbi Shlomo Landau tells an incredible story that he heard directly from a man named Daniel Abrahami, who lived through the terrifying events of October 7.
Daniel Abrahami and twelve of his friends were at the tragic music festival on Friday, Erev Shabbos. As the day wore on, Daniel began to feel a nagging pull in his conscience. Just a few weeks earlier, on Yom Kippur, he had experienced a moment of inspiration and made a commitment to keep Shabbos. But standing there at the festival, he knew that if he stayed, he would be breaking that commitment.
Finally, with conviction, he turned to his group of friends and said, “Guys, I’m keeping Shabbos this week. We can’t stay here. Whoever wants to come with me, I’ll take care of everything — I’ll find us a place, and I’ll arrange all the food.”
Seven of his friends decided to join him, but five of them couldn’t bring themselves to leave. Daniel found an apartment, arranged food, and they made it to the place just a half hour before sunset. They had a beautiful Shabbos together, filled with singing, dancing and a feeling of connection.
That night, Daniel went to sleep feeling content, unaware of the terror that was about to unfold. In the middle of the night, he had a vivid dream. In it, a close friend of his named Ben Frumess, who had tragically drowned in the Kinneret at the age of seventeen, appeared before him.
In the dream, Ben spoke to him, saying, “Daniel, I want you to know something — your commitment to Shabbos, which you’re keeping along with your friends, has created a tremendous noise in Heaven. The dedication you displayed by leaving
IN THE DREAM, BEN SPOKE TO HIM, SAYING, “DANIEL, I WANT YOU TO KNOW SOMETHING — YOUR COMMITMENT TO SHABBOS, WHICH YOU’RE KEEPING ALONG WITH YOUR FRIENDS, HAS CREATED A TREMENDOUS NOISE IN HEAVEN
the festival and keeping Shabbos is unbelievable, and because of it, you’ve saved your life and the lives of your friends.”
Daniel woke up in a cold sweat, his heart racing. The dream was so real, but he couldn’t make sense of it. Why would Ben come to him, and what could it all mean?
The next morning, as Daniel and his friends were enjoying the peace of Shabbos, the sound of rockets began to fill the air. At first, they weren’t alarmed; in Eretz Yisroel, rocket fire is unfortunately not too uncommon. But as the day wore on, the news began to trickle in, and they understood that what they were hearing was far from normal. A massacre had occurred at the music festival they had left just hours before.
Unfortunately, Daniel’s five friends who had stayed behind were caught in the carnage. Devastated, he later attended the funerals of three of them. The remaining two had been kidnapped and taken to Gaza.
As Daniel’s friend had told him in his dream, his commitment to Shabbos had literally saved his life.
The Dream and the Warning
This is another October 7 miracle, shared by Rabbi Yitzchak Sakhai.
It was 5:00 a.m., an hour before chaos would break loose on October 7. Yair’s phone rang unexpectedly, waking him from a deep sleep. On the other end was Yeshayahu, father of twelve, who was Yair’s mentor
and employer at a chesed service that delivered pita bread to those in need.
“Yair, I need to tell you something,” Yeshayahu said, his voice tinged with urgency. “I just had a dream about you, and I know it’s early, but I have to tell it to you.”
Yair, still groggy, listened as Yeshayahu described the vivid and unsettling dream.
“I saw you in a forest, running. There were people chasing you — frightening figures, some with guns. Every time they raised their weapons to shoot, something miraculous happened: A pita bread appeared out of nowhere and stopped the bullets.”
Yair was taken aback. The dream was bizarre, but Yeshayahu’s sincerity was unmistakable.
“I don’t know what it means,” Yeshayahu continued, “but I felt I had to tell you. Maybe it’s a sign.”
Yair thanked him, thinking it was just an odd, random dream. He brushed it off as nothing more than his friend’s imagination. Little did he know that this dream would soon become a lifeline.
At 6:30 a.m., just an hour and a half later, terror struck. Sirens wailed, and explosions ripped through the air as rockets began to fall. Yair, caught in the middle of the chaos, instinctively grabbed what he could and ran.
As he sprinted through the streets, the world around him erupted in violence. Bullets whizzed dangerously close, and Yair found himself running through scenes that felt eerily familiar. The dream that Yeshayahu had described was coming to life in terrifying detail.
Gunmen appeared from every corner, and Yair’s heart pounded with fear. He watched as his friends fell, one by one, caught in the relentless gunfire. Yair knew he was in a nightmare that was all too real. He was surrounded, the odds stacked against him, and survival seemed impossible.
But amidst the chaos, Yeshayahu’s words echoed in Yair’s mind. The dream, strange as it was, gave him an inexplicable sense of hope — a belief that somehow, he would
BULLETS WHIZZED DANGEROUSLY CLOSE, AND YAIR FOUND HIMSELF RUNNING THROUGH SCENES THAT FELT EERILY FAMILIAR
survive. Every time he felt paralyzed by fear, he remembered the pita bread stopping the bullets, an improbable symbol of Divine intervention.
Yair ran with everything he had, pushing his body to its limits, ducking and dodging through the gunfire. When the attack finally subsided, Yair was left standing — the only one of his friends who had survived. The reality of what had just happened began to sink in. The dream, which had felt so distant and surreal just hours before, had given him the strength to keep going when he had nothing else left.
Later, when Yair and Yeshayahu met, Yair recounted the horrifying events of that morning.
“I don’t know why I survived when none of my friends did,” Yair said, his voice choked with emotion. “But your dream — it kept me going. It was like Hashem sent you that vision to remind me that I would make it out alive.”
Yeshayahu, deeply moved, reflected on the power of kindness. “I truly believe that the fact that you took part in the chesed of delivering those pitas saved you. That’s what the dream was about.”
* * * * *
In every generation, Hashem continues to speak to us in ways that touch the heart and stir the soul. Even today, dreams remind us that we are never alone. Though most dreams are not true and certainly not prophecies, there are times when Hashem uses them to send messages to certain people. They are whispers from Above, guiding, protecting and reassuring us that Hashem’s love and presence are timeless, crossing all barriers between Heaven and Earth.

CHAPTER 4 OF 4
From the Inside Out
People often wonder what it’s like for someone to trust someone else with really significant decisions, ones that will impact them for years — possibly even the rest of their life. But that’s what home designers do all the time. It’s like being handed the steering wheel of a car you’ve never driven before. Yet, somehow, it always comes together.
The secret is that hiring a designer is a bit like matchmaking. It’s not just about finding the right style; it’s about making sure the personalities align, the communication flows and the vision resonates. It’s a delicate balance of matching taste and temperament, but when it works… well, it’s a dream come true.
This all sounds simple enough now, but back when I was a freshfaced design school grad, unsure of whether my “expertise” even qualified me to give advice on which color goes best with what, it was a whole different story. I had a lot of enthusiasm, a sketchbook full of ideas and zero confidence.
But the story I’m about to share was the moment I realized the power of connection — and that sometimes, the most unexpected relationships can be the ones that truly define your journey.
Looking Inward
When I moved into my new apartment, I did what most people do: I met the previous tenant for a brief handover of keys and a polite conversation about technicalities like light switches, and that was that. A quick hello, and then goodbye. The usual business, and a short exchange of pleasantries. The tenant, Leah, worked in homecare at the time, and I — well, I had just completed design school and was still terrified to call myself a “designer.”
Months after we’d moved in, I received an unexpected message from Leah. She had remembered that I was
a designer and asked if I could help her design a mudroom corner in her new home. My answer was a resounding yes! I was thrilled to take on the project.
She was absolutely delighted with the result, so much so that a few months later, she returned with a bigger project: She wanted me to design her entire master bedroom suite. I was over the moon.
Eventually, what started as a small corner quickly grew into a full-blown renovation project. Together, we reimagined her entrance, living room and home office, slowly transforming her home into the gorgeous modern high ranch it is today.
As in the classic story of how it all began with the doormat (or in this case, the mudroom), we soon transformed every room, from the cozy living room to the serene master suite. But Leah, ever the visionary, wasn’t done. Now she wanted to shift her focus outdoors.
I was excited. After all, the exterior is the first thing people see; it’s like the opening line of a good novel. But that’s not to say it didn’t come with its own set of challenges.
Starting
Turning Outward
The house, as it stood, was on a corner property, hidden away by overgrown shrubs and trees. It was perched on a small hill and featured a white exterior that had definitely seen better days. Add to that the standard window layout of the typical high ranch, and we had our work cut out for us.
So we got to work, focusing first on those key features. We ordered custom windows designed to open up the house to the outside world in a more inviting, modern way. We framed these new windows with spaces for lighting so the house would have a beautiful, warm glow come nightfall — creating that welcoming atmosphere we were after.
When it came to colors, Leah and I both gravitated toward the new wood-look trend that was starting to make waves. We paired it with a soft, light gray that complemented the wood, striking the perfect balance of modern elegance and warmth.
For the finishing touch, I designed a custom architectural awning to hang above the door. Not only did it add visual interest and dimension, but it also shielded the entrance from the elements, making it feel even more inviting.
Of course, during the time we were designing this gorgeous exterior, we worked closely with a talented renderer, bringing our vision to life in vivid detail. Together, we created an absolutely delightful, realistic replica of
Design Dilemma
Q: How do I know what fixture to choose for my entrance? I want it to fill the large space, but I don’t want to spend too much.
A: The key to balancing size and budget is to focus on scale and layering. For a large entrance, opt for a fixture that complements the space without overwhelming it. Consider a statement pendant light that has visual impact but doesn’t need to be extravagantly priced. Also, look for fixtures with clean lines or versatile designs that can blend well with different styles.
Another trick is to layer the lighting. Use a combination of ambient overhead lighting with accent lighting, like wall sconces, to create depth and balance in the room. You don’t need to break the bank on one huge fixture. Sometimes, a well-placed, oversized pendant combined with layered lighting can do wonders without costing a fortune.
what the exterior would look like — by day, with the sunlight dancing on the new features, and at night, when the house would glow from within, casting a warm and inviting light. The results were nothing short of dreamy.
The house was unrecognizable — for all the right reasons. What was once a tired, overgrown corner house had been transformed into something bold and beautiful, with a modern edge that felt like it belonged to a new era. It was the kind of exterior that made a statement, even from the street.
In the end, the transformation of Leah’s home wasn’t only about the design; it was about the relationship we built along the way. What started with a simple mudroom corner blossomed into a complete home renovation, driven by trust, collaboration and a shared vision.

I KNEW THERE WOULD BE NO CULTIVATED FIELDS FOR US HERE, BUT THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO START WITH! I THOUGHT WE COULD USE THE TRAIN STATION’S OLD WAREHOUSES, BUT IT SEEMS THEY WERE ALL DEMOLISHED.
DON’T YOU THINK IT’S BETTER TO BUILD NEW HOMES HERE THAN TO REBUILD THE ONES IN EUROPE ONLY FOR THE GOYIM TO BURN THEM DOWN AGAIN?
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?! WHERE WILL WE PUT OUR FAMILIES? WE HAVE LITTLE BABIES HERE!
MISHA, THEY SOUND LIKE US ONLY A YEAR AGO.
RABBI ELAZAR, LET’S JUST GO HOME. BACK IN EUROPE, AT LEAST WE HAD HOMES!
HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN? THE GOYIM BURNED DOWN OUR HOMES.
THESE CARS ARE IN NO CONDITION TO USE. IT ISN’T SAFE TO SLEEP INSIDE THEM.
WE CAN DEFINITELY HOST SOME OF YOUR FAMILIES. BUT THERE ARE 800 PEOPLE HERE; THAT’S LIKE HALF THE JEWISH POPULATION OF ARGENTINA.
I SAY THIS AS A DOCTOR. THE UNSANITARY CONDITIONS OF THESE CARS MAKE THEM A BREEDING GROUND FOR DISEASES!
YEAH. I HOPE HASHEM HELPS THEM LIKE HE HELPED US.
WE MUST GET THEM OUT OF HERE.
YOU’D BETTER GET ME OUT OF HERE!

WHAT CAN WE DO? WE SPOKE TO THE WARDEN, BUT HE REFUSES TO LISTEN.
OH, GOOD POINT… I DIDN’T THINK OF THAT.
I’VE HEARD ABOUT YOU, PEDRO. YES?
THE WARDEN WANTS TO SPEAK WITH YOU.
RUMORS ABOUT THE WARDEN HAVE SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE PRISON. INMATES WHO ANGERED OR PROVOKED HIM DISAPPEARED IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN.
WITH WHAT? WE’VE LOST ALL OF OUR GOLD!
DON’T WORRY. IF WE CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF HERE, WE CAN ALWAYS BOOM BOOM THE PRISON.
DID YOU BRIBE HIM? WITH ME INSIDE?!

THE CHANGING FACE OF:
SETTING COMMON MISTAKES STRAIGHT AND CLARIFYING
Many American-English speakers tag the “s” onto words with the “ward” suffix (like forward, toward, backward, upward, etc.). However, while that usage is preferred in British-English, the preferred usage in the good ol’ US of A is s-less.
THE LITTLE TIKES COZY COUPE
In 1991, Cozy Coupe made the record as the best-selling automobile in the U.S., a title it held until 1998. Leaning into its sales success, Little Tikes used the line: “The best-selling car in America has to be home by bedtime.” The Cozy Coupe was designed by former Chrysler designer Jim Mario, and it featured a sleek black roof and red body. Before Little Tikes welcomed it to their family, they replaced the black with the more child-friendly yellow.

Some years Kislev has 29 days and other years it has 30. When Kislev has 29 days, the third of Teves is the last day of Chanukah on which we say Hallel. But when Kislev has 30 days, the third of Teves is the day after Chanukah, and we say Tachanun.

Oh, how we seek out apricity these days. That’s a noun meaning the warmth of the sun in the winter.
Be back in a jiffy? I’m not so sure. A jiffy is an actual unit of time, first used in the eighteenth century to represent the time it takes for light to travel a centimeter in a vacuum (approximately 33.3564 picoseconds, if that means anything to you). Later the word developed other meanings. For example, in electricity, a jiffy represents between one-fiftieth and one-sixtieth of a second.

When you were in high school, becoming a speech therapist was all the rage.
Like many of your peers, you did the ‘in’ thing. You went to college and became a speech language pathologist. Eventually, you earned letters following your name and were officially deemed a success (at least by the standards of the time).
With such credentials and earning potential you were slated to be the breadwinner and were assured a life of Torah.

Pneumonia
No More
Chodesh Adar is meant to be a time of joy. But that year, ours was filled with fear and gloom. Our sweet Shloimy developed pneumonia and had to be hospitalized. Several weeks passed and the doctors were stumped by the case. They tried everything, but nothing worked. We saw no improvement whatsoever.
It was 21 Adar when my wife and I sat in the hospital corridor, davening for a miracle. What more could we do? How could we save our son’s life?
My wife had the idea. Let’s get Tehillim Kollel to daven for Shloimy!
Then and there, in the hospital hallway, we called in. The representative sounded so warm and caring – at true ray of sunshine in middle of a bleak, stormy day.
One week passed. Nothing
changed. Shloimy was still fighting for his life. We decided to change our membership to Meron. Kollel Meron would split the heavens for Shloimy’s complete recovery.
On Erev Pesach, Shloimy came home from the hospital – weak, but healthy. Chodesh Adar was a happy month after all; it was the month the seeds of our miracle were planted!
Tehillim in Meron is the best medicine. Refuah sheleimah!
