The morning fog rises off the river, lazily wafting upward. Swans glide smoothly, silently, as though the surface were made of glass. Out in the distance, the horizon touches the mountains, majestic and regal in the misty haze of dawn. A turtle suns itself on a piece of driftwood, then abandons his post with a muffled splash and disappears into the spreading ripples. A fish leaps out of the water, sending up a fine spray of water with an elegant flip of its tail, then dips back in to dart about in the deep blue depths.
This meditation moment is brought to you by Feathers Electrolysis & Laser Salon. Our clients enjoy a soothing experience with personal care and unparalleled expertise. Schedule your appointment at (929) 337-9610.

(Re: The Room Where Hope Happens, Issue 106) Thank you for the amazing article about the Brainstorm method. It really captured the essence of this program. I was waiting for the day that an article would be written about it. I would like to add that many adults under the age of 27 also saw tremendous results with this method. As a teacher, I have implemented the Brainstorm method in my classroom through practicing the exercises in an exciting way. A fun song in either English or Yiddish is available for parents, teachers and principals who are interested in doing the same. If you’d like to hear more, please call 845-263-0611 and leave a clear message. D.F.

(Re: The Room Where Hope Happens, Issue 106) As a mother of a five-year-old son with developmental delays who attends a special ed school, I was intrigued by the article that discusses the Brainstorm method. Since my son was nine months old, he has been receiving intensive therapy to help him reach his milestones. We have utilized and continue to do many different therapies and special methods, some of with which we’ve seen slow progress, some that have not been effective, and others that continue to help him daily. I would love to hear more information about this method. As a mother who wants only the best for her child, I’m hoping that perhaps it can be the right program for my son. Thank you for an insightful and informative weekly magazine. I’m especially enjoying the fantastic, engaging serials. Keep up the good work! H.V.

(Re: All About Eggplant, Issue 106) Thank you for your beautiful recipe section! It is my favorite part of The Boro Park View. I made the Israeli Style Falafel Eggplant this week, but with a twist that really worked. Instead of falafel balls, I cut chicken cutlets into bite-size pieces, and mixed them with some olive oil, salt, garlic, paprika and shawarma spice. I cooked it through, and it was a full meal on an eggplant boat! Creative Cook

(Re: The Death of Flip Phones, Issue 106) I’d like to let you know that contrary to what a press release in your paper informed readers, flip phones are nowhere near going extinct, Although all major carriers are shutting down their 3G networks, there are still plenty of 4G flip phones available for purchase that will work on the 4G network. In fact, there are currently over fifteen flip phones that can be kashered at TAG, Meshimer or Geder that run on the 4G network, and there is no need to go out and buy a smartphone. Thank you, C.R.

(Re: Top it Healthy, Issue 104) I noticed that you included two recipes featuring blueberries and strawberries. As per the instructions of most kashrus agencies, including the CRC and others, these fruits are extremely difficult to check and require expertise to enable them to be eaten in their fresh form (especially strawberries). Including such recipes without checking instructions could, chas v’shalom, cause many people to be oiver many issurim d’Oraisa. There are many rabbanim who feel that these berries should be avoided entirely until infestation levels drop. Also, regarding wild salmon — which you mentioned in your article about superfoods — I believe they are infested with anisakis worms, which farmed salmon don’t contain. Regarding the article on organic produce, in that same issue — again, because of the use of fewer pesticides, these items should be checked more carefully. In the zechus of being careful with Hashem’s mitzvos, may He keep us all healthy! Concerned for Kashrus

(Re: Back-to-School Baking, Issue 103) Thank you for your great, usable recipes. I made the macadamia nut cookies once, and then, for the next batch, substituted cashews for the macadamia nuts with great results. This tip can be passed on to anyone who doesn’t want to (or can’t) pay $19.99 a pound for macadamia nuts. (The recipe used around 6 ounces.) Shira Weiss

dow of time for the treatment to be effective. They booked an appointment with an expert in the field. Yisroel took numerous tests, and then they sat down with the doctor to discuss their prospects. The doctor reviewed Yisroel’s history and examined the results. “Yisroel is a perfect candidate,” the doctor said. The mother gathered her courage and bared her heart’s concern. “Professor,” she asked, “Tell me — not as a doctor, but as a parent — if you had a child like Yisroel, would you give him the medication?” The doctor was quiet for a few moments, and then replied, “To tell you the truth, I cannot compare your situation to mine. I live in an affluent suburb, and in our circles, physical things like height carry a lot of importance. If my son were like Yisroel, I’d have no choice but to try the treatment. “But you are Jews! Your values are different. To you, inner character is more important than looks. Yisroel seems to be a smart child, and he seems okay with his situation. If I were in your place, I don’t think I would take the risk…”
Who knew what effects it would have on these children as they grew older?

For the nations of the world, the primary emphasis is on the externals, the physical and materialistic aspects of life. At the same time, for us Yidden, the emphasis is specifically focused on internal depth and spirituality. The externals remain on a lower rung of our ladder of priorities. Eisav was blessed with earthly pleasures first: “mishmanei ha’aretz,” the pasuk says, and only afterward, “mital hashamayim.” Yaakov, on the other hand, was blessed with an abundance of spiritual good: “V’yiten lecha Elokim mital hashamayim.” The materialistic brachos came later, almost as an afterthought. The difference is in the order, in our focus and priorities. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.
Did You Know? The bracha of dew that Yaakov received carries through various eras of Klal Yisroel’s history. In the Midbar, dew refers to the mann. Once in Eretz Yisroel, Klal Yisroel was blessed with the Beis Hamikdash, which is also likened to dew. In galus, we are blessed with the Torah, also compared to dew. Finally, the dew will be used in the future for Techiyas Hameisim.

More than any other sense, smell is closely linked to memory. The aromas of Chanukah delicacies and rich winter soups that fill our kitchens at this time of year imbue us with the warm and cozy feeling of family time spent together. At the heart of these wonderful kitchen aromas are the foods we labor over for our families, creating a home atmosphere spiced with love. There isn’t a day in the kitchen that a cook doesn’t reach for her spice containers, and when she adds that dash of pepper to her creamiest potatoes, seasons her choice Shabbos chicken, or puts the finishing touches on an impressive rack of lamb, she wants to know that the flavor will be spot on. Mr. Moishe Stock of Montreal, who is a proficient cook, started his business because of a simple realization: Every single dish, from a simple snack of grilled cheese to a gourmet yom tov seudah centerpiece, requires spices. And fresh, high-grade spices provide the perfect upgrade to any food. He founded Pure Spice Canada (Les Produits Pure Spice) in 2012 in a Montreal basement, with the mission to create a kosher source of spices that would set choice food apart.
Fresh From the Source Was there a way to get that unmistakably aromatic, fresh-from-the-source feel to the heimish table? Since Pure Spice Canada started small, they were able to research the highest-grade products and develop connections with growers. Mr. Stock traveled and tested products until he chose a high-quality Spanish plantation to supply his paprika, a Peruvian farm for raw chilli
peppers, and raw ingredients from India and Vietnam. Before Mr. Stock makes an order, the suppliers send him a sample container of each batch, which is then tasted and labtested for quality. Once the ingredients reach Canada, the mixing is precise and carefully controlled to create iconic spice blends such as Montreal Steak spice and
classic chicken seasoning. Pure Spice products sell all over Quebec, both to kosher and nonkosher clients, including caterers and fine restaurants. As demand increased, Mr. Stock had to carefully share the secret spice blend recipes and ingredients with a production facility where larger quantities could be mixed. Certain products, however, are still made in-house. Of course, there is a ticking clock in the spice trade. When spices wait around for months or years in a warehouse, their potency evaporates. Instead of grinding 10,000 tons of black pepper and filling a warehouse with years’ worth of supply, Pure Spice Canada buys the dehydrated

peppers and grinds a batch monthly — and right now, at peak season, they grind it biweekly. The distinctive freshness and quality greet you with a blast of fragrance.
A Winning Blend Like many non-Israelis who enjoy Israeli food, I’m wondering which spices go into a shawarma blend. Mr. Stock, without going into details about the actual recipe, which took him over a year to develop, shares some tales about its taste tests. On a family trip to Eretz Yisroel, he took his samples along. In the Old City and the newer neighborhoods of Yerushalayim, he sought out the most experienced Middle Eastern restaurant chefs and pressed his shawarma spice on them. “Just do me a favor; let me know if this is good or not.” The verdict? It was beyond good; it was the real stuff. Then there’s challah topping. Mr. Stock is well used to people coming over to him in shul to discuss his spices,
Mr. Stock traveled and tested products until he chose a highquality Spanish plantation to supply his paprika, a Peruvian farm for raw chilli peppers, and raw ingredients from India and Vietnam.
and one comment he hears often is: “We bought your challah topping, and suddenly we’re using it on everything, from knishes to salads.” What’s so special about a blend of sesame, poppy and salt? Mr. Stock smiles as he starts to explain. “There are different grades of sesame — food grade and bakery grade. Then there are golden, white, toasted or raw seeds. And salt, too. I don’t use plain salt, but tastier artisan salt.” One specialty product made by Pure Spice is poutine mix. A famous traditional Canadian delicacy, poutine is a rich — usually meat-based — gravy served over French fries and topped with cheese. When Mr. Stock first offered this product to his gentile clients, a couple of chefs asked, “Are you sure it’s kosher? Because this tastes like real meat!”
Crossing the Border The company moved up quickly from its basement headquarters to a bigger location, then to its present factory. Even as production picks up speed, Pure Spice continuously runs each product through lab tests to ensure they perform. This past summer, a Pure Spice client from Montreal spent the summer as a camp cook in New York. As part of his preparations, he made a huge order of Pure Spice barbecue spice and steak spice, and took it along with his family’s suitcases on the truck. But his campers are no longer the only New Yorkers to enjoy these premier seasonings. Mr. Stock’s longtime dream has come to fruition, and he now offers his highquality products to balabustas and restaurateurs in New York under the hashgacha of the Hisachdus. And despite COVID-related delays, the Pure Spice Canada products are now on the shelves of Brooklyn’s supermarkets. Get yourself tasted! Distributed by: Neiman Wholesale, (845) 368-0999

CHAPTER 31 RECAP: An exchange of money prompts Shabbesai Tzvi’s move from the prison dungeon to the noblemen’s prison fortress. Some generous bribes to the guards allow for the slaughtering of the “Korban Pesach” amid a crowd, after which Shabbesai Tzvi has his followers eat the forbidden chelev, much to Yechiel’s discomfort.
I
Over the following weeks, visitors to the “king” converge upon the area.
n the early summer, Yankiv Tomashov and Noyach arrived in Gallipoli. In the absence of their father, Yankiv had remained in Smyrna with his grandchildren for Pesach. Shortly after Pesach, Yankiv and Noyach had sailed for Constantinople, only to discover when they arrived that they would have to turn back toward Gallipoli. In Constantinople, after hearing reports of pirates preying on the travelers between the capital and Gallipoli, Yankiv hired armed guards to accompany them on the last leg of their journey. Within hours after their arrival in Gallipoli, Noyach procured decent lodgings, but he had to pay an exorbitant price. They did not see much of Yechiel. His duties in the Fortress of Power took up most of his time. With the quick perception of a father’s eye, however, Yankiv could see the inner turmoil in Yechiel’s heart. Yechiel’s earlier enthusiasm had waned, but Shabbesai Tzvi clearly still maintained a powerful hold over him. Soon after his arrival, Yankiv was

granted an audience with Shabbesai Tzvi in the Fortress of Power. Yechiel was away on a mission and did not accompany his father to the fortress. The opulence of Shabbesai Tzvi’s suite overwhelmed Yankiv, and for a moment, his conviction that Shabbesai Tzvi was an impostor was shaken. But the memory of the events in Smyrna quickly restored his certainty. “Please sit down,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, pointing to a chair with his golden scepter. “Thank you,” said Yankiv. “I wanted to come earlier, but my wife and I are both in poor health. The journey was too difficult for us.” “Indeed? Yechiel never mentioned that his parents were in poor health.” “I didn’t inform him, because I didn’t want him to worry.” “You’re a considerate father. I gather that you, at least, have recovered, since you were able to make the journey now.” “Actually, I’m not completely well, but I felt I had to come anyway. I came to ask my son to return to Po-
land for a while. He’s been away for so many years. My wife isn’t well, and she wishes to see her son and his family.” “May the Almighty speedily restore her health.” “Yechiel is very reluctant to leave now. I pleaded with him to come home for a brief visit, but he absolutely refuses to do so. I can easily afford to hire the fastest ships and horses to take my son and his family to Warsaw and bring them back to Turkey in a very short time. If only he’d be willing to come.” “Great things are happening in the Empire, and greater things are yet to come. Why don’t you send for your wife to come here instead?” “My wife is too ill to travel.” Shabbesai Tzvi took three sugar cubes from a silver bowl on the table and gave them to Yankiv Tomashov. “Eat one of these tonight, and you’ll be restored to full health,” he said. “Send the other two to your wife. They’ll make her well enough to travel. When she arrives, I will cure her.” Yankiv Tomashov took the sugar cubes reluctantly. He was disappointed. He had tried to induce Shabbesai Tzvi to send Yechiel back to Poland by claiming his wife was ill, but now, he’d have to try another approach. Just then, there was a knock on the door and Yechiel entered. After greeting Shabbesai Tzvi and his father, he explained that he had ac-
complished his mission and returned early. Yankiv had planned to speak to Yechiel after he had obtained Shabbesai Tzvi’s permission for him to leave. He was unprepared for this development. “Ah, Yechiel, my precious child,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “You are one of my most reliable disciples. If something is entrusted to you, I know it will be done. And quickly.” “Thank you, Master.” “Your father tells me he wants you to return to Poland to be with your mother who isn’t well.” A look of confusion appeared on Yechiel’s face, and he shot a questioning look at his father. Shabbesai Tzvi glanced from father to son. It was clear to him that Yechiel knew nothing of his mother’s supposed illness. Anger welled up in his eyes. “Yechiel!” he commanded. “Did your father ask you to return to Poland?” “Yes.” “What reason did he give?” Yechiel threw a pleading look at his father. Yankiv shrugged his shoulders in resignation and nodded. “Speak!” commanded Shabbesai Tzvi. “My father feels that the Master and all those close to him are in mortal danger,” said Yechiel, his voice barely audible. Shabbesai Tzvi fixed Yankiv with a withering look. Yankiv looked away. “The truth emerges and covers the face of the deceiver with shame,” snapped Shabbesai Tzvi. “What do you have to say for yourself?” “I admit it,” said Yankiv quietly. “I came as a father worried about his children. For my own part, I’d be content to follow all the wonderful events taking place in the Empire from the relative safety of my home in Warsaw together with my children and grandchildren. I believe there will be violence before your final victory and that many people will die. I want my son and his family to be safe in Warsaw with me. I’ll be perfectly happy to come to Eretz Yisroel together with the rest of our people. I don’t need my son to be among the first, if that means he has to put his life in danger.” Shabbesai Tzvi rose to his feet, his face aflame with a towering rage. “Get out!” he screamed. “Do you think you can come in here and play me for a fool? I see in your eyes that you are not a believer. You have simply come to take your son away from me, but he will not go with you. Begone, you foolish man, and never show your face here again.” Yechiel watched in agonized silence as his father was roughly escorted from the fortress by three henchmen with menacing looks on their faces. That evening, Yankiv sent Noyach with a message to Yechiel asking him to come. Noyach found Yechiel sitting among a host of Shabbesai Tzvi’s followers. “Your father would like to speak with you, Yechiel,” he whispered. “Can you come with me now?” “Listen to me, Noyach,” said Yechiel in a low voice. “The Master has forbidden me to speak to my father. I cannot go with you.” “But he is your father!” “I have no choice. Tell my father I ask his forgiveness and that I humbly beg him to stay in Gallipoli a while longer.” “I feel sorry for you, Yechiel,” said Noyach. “Don’t you see that Shabbesai Tzvi is not what you

thought he was? Moshiach will reconcile fathers and sons, not tear them apart. Your misery is written on your face. Why can’t you be strong, Yechiel? Come with us tomorrow to Smyrna. We will take your wife and children and return to Warsaw. Let us flee from this accursed place. Come home, Yechiel.” Tears sprang to Yechiel’s eyes. “You’re asking me to walk away from fifteen years of my life, Noyach. I’ve followed the master for fifteen years. I won’t abandon him. I can’t.” Yankiv and Noyach remained in Gallipoli. Occasionally, Yechiel would pass them in the street. Their eyes would meet, but they did not speak. In early Tammuz, Shmuel Primo announced that 17 Tammuz was to be celebrated all over the world as the festival of the revival of the spirit and light of Moshiach, just as it had been in Eretz Yisroel the previous year, and that 23 Tammuz would be observed as a Shabbos, even though it fell on the second day of the week. It was to be known as Shabbos Hagadol, the great Shabbos of Moshiach. Desecration of this Shabbos was punishable by death. And indeed, both of these days were celebrated with feasts and rejoicing in all the Jewish communities that were apprised of the proclamation in time. Toward the end of Tammuz, a delegation arrived from the Vaad Arba Haaratzos,1 the council of the four lands of the Kingdom of Poland. The delegation was headed by Rav Yeshaya Halevi and Rav Aryeh Leib ben Shmuel Tzvi, the son and stepson of Rav Dovid Halevi, the author of Turei Zahav, better known as the Taz. The purpose of the visit was to determine if there was substance to Shabbesai Tzvi’s claim to being Moshiach. At the same time, there were rumors that Nechemiah Kohein, a rather eccentric holy man and a famous Kabbalist, was on his way from Poland to meet with Shabbesai Tzvi. On the appointed day of the delegation’s visit, Noyach crossed to the Isle of Abydos early in the morning and secured a place near the gates of the fortress. The members of the delegation were brought to the Fortress of Power with great pomp and ceremony. They remained closeted with Shabbesai Tzvi for a long time. As he waited, Noyach reviewed in his mind the meeting between Shabbesai Tzvi and Rav Shloime Strasbourg in Smyrna years before, as it had been described to him by Yankiv Tomashov, his employer. Presently, the delegation emerged. As the delegates from Poland reached the gates of the fortress, Noyach stepped out and addressed them.
“Moshiach will reconcile fathers and sons, not tear them apart. Your misery is written on your face.”
To be continued… 1 The Council of the Four Lands was the autonomous central governing body of the Jewish communities of Poland and Lithuania during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Democrats Vie for Chance to Unseat Hochul in 2022 Gubernatorial Primary Two months after replacing Andrew Cuomo in Albany, Governor Kathy Hochul is finding herself being challenged by well-known names in the political arena who hope to unseat her in next year’s Democratic primary. Attorney General Letitia James threw her hat in the ring last Friday, ending months of speculation that she had her eye on the governor’s mansion. James’ name has appeared often in the news over the past year in conjunction with a pair of reports she released that were instrumental in toppling the seemingly untouchable Cuomo. One found that the Cuomo administration had released inaccurate statistics that underreported the number of COVID-related deaths in nursing home patients, while the other charged Cuomo with harassment. Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi wasted no time in using James’ announcement to defend the former governor, reported the New York Post. “Tish James abused her office to falsely accuse Governor Cuomo because she was afraid to confront him in an election and let people decide,” said Azzopardi. Also expected to join the race is New York City public advocate Jumaane Williams, who filed paperwork for a potential gubernatorial bid last week but had not announced his candidacy yet as of last Sunday. Having Williams and James facing off against each other could set the stage for an interesting race as both are African Americans from Brooklyn, which leaves them potentially dividing votes on their home turf while trying to appeal to voters in the rest of the state. If Mayor Bill de Blasio also decides to run for governor, as he has suggested he might, it would add a third Brooklynite to the mix. City & State New York described James, who beat Williams in the 2018 primary for lieutenant governor, as Hochul’s strongest challenger in next year’s Democratic primary runoff.
As Trash Piles Up, Sanitation Workers Union Denies Slowdown Garbage bags may be stacked up on city streets, but the president of the union that represents sanitation workers denied that there was any kind of deliberate slowdown. Gothamist reported that Local 831

president Harry Nespoli said that trash pickups had been lagging because sanitation workers were busy clearing out 5,000 catch basins citywide before torrential rains swept in last week. “We saved the city from floating away,” said Nespoli. “That’s not a slowdown.” But Nespoli’s assertions fell flat, with complaints about missed pickups in southern Brooklyn, parts of Staten Island, and the northwest Bronx flooding 311 lines days before last week’s rains. Sanitation Commissioner Edward Grayson acknowledged that trash pickups had been lagging even before the storm hit. Sanitation crews are among the many city workers who were required to get at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by last Friday, a mandate that didn’t sit well with many. Nespoli acknowledged that his members felt that they were being unfairly targeted by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s vaccination requirements. “City workers should not be treated like this,” he said. “They feel as if, how can I go out there and perform if I don’t know [if] tomorrow I have a job. But they are out there picking up the garbage. That’s what they’re doing.” Circulating photographs show mountains of black trash bags piled up in Boro Park. Missed pickup complaints in Staten Island were 50 times higher than usual last week, with similar reports from Marine Park, Bergen Beach, Canarsie and nearby neighborhoods coming in at 20 to 30 times their usual pace. One Canarsie resident reported that garbage trucks were driving by without stopping for pickups, while in other cases picking up trash at certain spots but not others. Speaking at a Thursday press conference, the mayor

warned sanitation workers that their actions could have serious consequences, reported Boro Park 24. “If you don’t want to do the job anymore, someone really will want it, I assure you,” said de Blasio. “All of these uniformed service jobs are deeply coveted. They are crucial to us. We depend on them. They are important and fulfilling jobs, and they come with some of the best benefits in the U.S. People want these jobs. Anyone who doesn’t want to do the job anymore — I know someone else will step up and fill it. You want to protest, go protest. But when you are on the clock, you have to do your job.” Anticipating that there will be some sanitation workers who will not be able to report for work because they have yet to be vaccinated, de Blasio added that DSNY has canceled all days off for now, with Sunday shifts and twelve-hour schedules instituted to cover for the missing manpower.

CHAPTER THIRTY RECAP: The
British follow Binyamin for some time, but then they finally let up, convinced that he knows nothing about Zelig’s whereabouts. Binyamin confides to his worried mother that Zelig has changed and is no longer a good friend for him. He wonders to himself whether or not he needs to help Zelig with his illegal activities, simply out of a sense of hakaras hatov.
“G
ood morning, Mr. Shikovitzer.” Binyamin put down his tefillin bag and grasped a nearby bench. “How are you?” “Hashem will have mercy,” Zelig’s father replied, and his lips pressed together firmly. He continued sweeping the entryway of the shul without saying another word. Binyamin’s eyes darted around in an effort to catch sight of Zelig, but his friend wasn’t there. “Come here, Binyamin!” Shikovitzer shouted suddenly. “That bench looks all wrong over there! Did you forget where it belongs? Really now!” Binyamin glanced up. Zelig’s father had never spoken to him in such a tone. He surely had a good reason for doing so. “Here,” Yitzchak Shikovitzer said. “Let’s lift it together and push it against this wall.” As they lifted the wide, heavy bench, he muttered, “A friend of Zelig’s came by in the middle of the night with a note from him. But keep quiet — they are hanging around outside the windows.” Binyamin didn’t look at the window or anywhere else. He pushed the bench to the wall and stood up, fingering the note that the older man had stuck into his hand. Zelig was expecting help from him, and that was a reasonable expectation if he still considered him one of his good friends. The problem was that Mr. Shikovitzer was also convinced that Binyamin was the most suitable

person to help in this situation. Did Binyamin really need to help out, cover up and convey information? He didn’t look at the note. After a long moment, he stuck it into his pocket. “Read it as soon as you can, and then get rid of it,” the older man whispered, with his back to Binyamin. Binyamin nodded slightly, almost imperceptibly. He had
“Did Zelig tell you?” Binyamin asked quietly, his fingers playing with the note. to read the note. He wondered what Zelig had wanted to tell him after they parted last night near the old stable. He continued to putter around the shul, straightening tablecloths and doing whatever else needed to be done. As soon as he got to a corner that was not visible from the window, he pulled the note out of his pocket and looked at it. Tatty, I’m fine. I might disappear for a short time with friends. Tell Binyamin that he can relax; I don’t expect him to break his sacred principles for me.
The words were not pleasant to read, perhaps because for Zelig, “sacred principles” were clearly not that sacred anymore. Binyamin bit his bottom lip. It was true that he did not want to transgress his sacred principles; Zelig could mock him as much as he wanted about that. However, if it was necessary to help save Zelig, then he would perhaps help. But to be an accomplice? Had Zelig really expected Binyamin to join him and his friends? “I don’t like his friend,” Shikovitzer murmured, passing him again. “Someone from here?” Binyamin asked, hardly moving his lips. “I don’t think so. He’s from the Zionist freethinkers, and I think he came from Yerushalyim or Tel Aviv to form the group. I’ve seen him a few times already.” Shikovitzer’s eyes were glittering angrily. Binyamin wondered how much Zelig’s father knew. “Did Zelig tell you?” Binyamin asked quietly, his fingers playing with the note. “He didn’t tell me anything. But you can’t hide things from a father.” “So you know… everything?” “I didn’t know he was wanted.” Shikovitzer sighed. “And now I don’t know why they’re looking for him. If his friend is wandering around freely, and Zelig can’t, then that’s a sign that he did something that really got the British mad.” He was quiet for a minute, and then glanced at the door. “Since when do you know anything about this? Since you were here for Pesach?” “Of course not. Only since yesterday afternoon.” The first person came in to daven, and Binyamin went to get his tefillin down. A tiny fragment of the note found its way to the basket at the entrance to the shul. Another little piece was put to rest behind the siddurim on the shelf. Another frag-

ment flew over to land near the broom behind the door. Binyamin felt he was making good progress. But that did not help him when two British soldiers walked in after Shacharis — at least they’d waited for him to finish davening — and made a beeline for him. They muttered something in English, and then grasped his arms forcibly. Binyamin noticed his father in the corner of the shul gasp as his eyes widened in fright. ***** The sergeant at the police station that Binyamin was taken to was not friendly at all. He barked at him in English, but Binyamin, who understood virtually nothing of the language, was silent. Why had he been arrested? Did they think he was Zelig, or did they think he knew something? But he knew nothing. He had no idea where Zelig was right now! Someone entered the dim room. He was dressed like a British policeman, but his facial features looked Jewish. He looked at Binyamin and asked in Hebrew, “What is your name?” “Binyamin Reiness.” “And you are a friend of Zelig Shikovitzer?” “I was.” “What does that mean, you were? What about now?” “I’ve been in yeshivah in Chevron for the past few months. I only returned to Acco the day before yesterday.” The man switched to English, speaking to the British sergeant. The sergeant listened, and wrote and wrote. Then he issued a stream of words, and the Jewish policeman turned back to Binyamin. “After you returned to Acco, did you meet Zelig?” “Yes.” “Where?” “In the street.” “What did you talk about with him?” “All kinds of things.” Binyamin ran a few potential answers through his mind. “We tried to catch up, hear what each of us had been doing these past few months.” “So what did he tell you?” “That he works in a fish store.” The policeman did not ask, “What did you tell him?”’ He waited for Binyamin to continue speaking, but the boy was quiet. Finally the policeman asked, “And what did you do after that?” “He told me his father would want to see me, because I’d always spent a lot of time there. So we went to his father’s workplace. But then Zelig went somewhere else, and I ended up staying myself to speak with his father.” “Where did he go?” “I don’t know,” Binyamin said honestly. Was it possible that Zelig had spent the entire afternoon hiding between the gates of the old, crumbling corral? Or had he been somewhere else, and had only crept back there toward nighttime? The sergeant muttered something. “He’s asking, where do you think he went?” the Jewish policeman said. “I have no idea. Maybe to his workplace. After all, it was in the middle of the day.” “Then you went to the market yourself.”

“Yes. I wanted to see where he works, but he wasn’t there.” The policeman’s lips remained pressed together. “Just curiosity, or what?” Binyamin didn’t answer. “And what did you do this morning in the synagogue under their house? Did you give his father any information?” “No, nothing. When I’m not in yeshivah, I pray at that synagogue. His father founded it.” “But you came long before the prayers.”
Binyamin stared in horrified silence at the pair of handcuffs that closed with a snap around his wrists. “Where am I going?” he asked hoarsely. “I’ve been Zelig’s friend since I was a boy. I come to their place a lot.” “This time only you came to the synagogue, and not Zelig.” “Yes.” “Why? Where was he?” “I don’t know.” “He didn’t give you any information about where he was? He didn’t ask you to come to him, to meet him, to help him out?” “No.” Now there was silence in the room. The Jewish policeman sat down at the desk and spoke to the British officer in a low tone. Two other British policemen stood near the door of the room, and Binyamin averted his gaze. He had to hope that even if the Jew had picked up on his hesitance and his moments of deliberation, he would not convey them along with his translation. Long moments passed. The boy sat on the same wooden bench that he had been taken to when he’d come in. His eyes were fixed on the cracks and spaces between the ancient tiles on the floor. He could not remember even one perek of Tehillim; instead, he began to recite Maseches Brachos by heart. But he hadn’t gotten through more than eighteen mishnayos when tall boots suddenly approached him. The British officer barked something in English, and the Jewish policeman, sitting at the desk with his back to Binyamin, said, “Stand up and put out your hands. That’s what he said.” Binyamin stared in horrified silence at the pair of handcuffs that closed with a snap around his wrists. “Where am I going?” he asked hoarsely. “To the fortress prison,” the Jewish policeman’s said, his back to Binyamin. “What? Why?” “They want to find out more about your connection to your friend’s group. Three members have already been caught, and we’re looking for the rest.” “But they have nothing to do with me! I know nothing about any of this! I was still in Chevron until two days ago!”

“Well, perhaps you corresponded in writing from there with Shikovitzer.” The Jewish policeman rose. He didn’t look at Binyamin, but at least this time he didn’t turn his back to him. “If you are indeed innocent, I’m sure you’ll be released in a day or two.” The sergeant said something in English, and the Jewish officer said, “All right, go with them.” “To the fortress?” “Yes.” “So… I’m being imprisoned now?” “Detained,” the man clarified. “You’re a detainee right
He looked at his hands, which were damp with perspiration, and tried to remember which mishnah he’d been up to. His brain felt hollow and empty. now, not a prisoner. I hope that it’s only for a day or two.” Binyamin was pushed outside, to the closed carriage that was waiting there. He climbed in and sat down on the narrow bench. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his dear father waiting near the police station. He tried to hurry over to Binyamin, but before he could get there, the horses broke into a brisk trot. Their hoof beats thundered in Binyamin’s ears like the roar of a cannon. The irony of fate. Who if not Zelig’s father had affixed these horseshoes recently? The British army members were regular clients of his ever since he’d opened his workshop. The city’s streets flew by through the windows of the carriage. Binyamin sat and thought about his friends in yeshivah. Would he be seeing them soon, or was he destined to rot in the prison fortress until someone would be able to prove that he really did not have any connection to Zelig’s new path in life? So Zelig knew. Already when they’d met, Zelig knew that
he was being targeted. If three of his friends had been arrested, it was clear that the British would be looking for him soon. What had he meant when he’d said that he would need help from Binyamin? That he was hoping to hide in Binyamin’s house? Unlikely. Perhaps he wanted him to serve as a decoy figure: Zelig would run away, and Binyamin would be arrested in his place. What could be better? No, Binyamin did not think that was what Zelig had in mind. Especially since Zelig certainly knew that even a minimal interrogation would reveal the fact that the Chevron yeshivah bachur had never had any connection to the Acco Defenders. It was more rational to assume that Zelig had really thought about Binyamin giving assistance in the event that he, Zelig, would have to disappear. Assistance in the form of conveying information, supporting his father who would be left alone, and things like that… The carriage passed the public well. Binyamin saw the people operating the pump, and he suddenly felt very thirsty. He looked at his hands, which were damp with perspiration, and tried to remember which mishnah he’d been up to. His brain felt hollow and empty. Finally, the carriage approached the Acco wall that abutted the sea. He knew that they were very close to their destination. From afar he saw the familiar lighthouse towering into the horizon. They turned left, and then the horses stopped. Binyamin’s gaze took in the large iron gates in front of them. A mass of humanity crowded outside the gates, clinging to the bars. Perhaps visiting hours were nearing, or maybe this was the way it always was. The soldier driving the carriage shouted something. The British sergeant pushed into the masses and raised both his voice and his truncheon. The crowd parted, with people edging to the sides of the road, and then two additional soldiers appeared seemingly out of nowhere and pushed the people to create a wider path. Then, with a chilling creak, the gates opened, and the carriage drove into the fortress. To be continued…

Watch repairman Tuvia Goldstein takes the time to talk about repairing timepieces BY: Y. BLOOM ING
Watches are among the unsung heroes of everyday life. With just a tiny battery — and sometimes not even that — these small marvels reliably stand the test of time. With painstaking detail, they work in silence uninterruptedly, offering their service whenever a glance is thrown their way. Only twice a year do they receive our full attention: when the clock is moved forward, and then again on its way back. Or, less ceremoniously, when something goes wrong and the wearer has to get their watch to tell time again. That is when the services of a watchmaker are commissioned. The term watchmaker was used more literally back in the day when watches were handcrafted by skilled artisans, but it has continued to stick around in our era of factory-produced watches. This week, we speak with Tuvia Goldstein, a chassidish yungerman who repairs watches for a living at Ultimatime in Boro Park.

determine my inherent strengths and weaknesses. That helped guide me toward a career best suited for my personal characteristics.
What did the test show that made you consider watch repair? The test was very validating for me. It demonstrated that I have great hand-eye coordination, I excel at things that require intense focus, and that some of my strengths are good spatial intelligence, patience and precision. In short, I was doing the opposite work of what I should have been doing! Perhaps in a different gilgul I could have been a brain surgeon instead of a watch surgeon, but alas, that’s not in the plans for now.
Were you always a tinkerer who enjoyed such projects? Can you tell us about the journey to your current position? My first job out of kollel was managing receiving and shipping for a large food company. I was good at it but didn’t derive much satisfaction or joy from the work, so I went to meet a recruiting firm. They were impressed enough to offer me a job on their own team, and I was successful there, too, but again, I found myself dreading work. I began looking for something else and eventually consulted with popular career coach Shaina Keren, who put me through a type of aptitude test to

It would be nice to say yes, but in reality, that’s not exactly the case. I did find it thrilling to load my car just perfectly, and I would often look at broken items before opting for a quick fix or calling a repairman, but that’s about it.
How did you get started? There’s no Watchmaking for Dummies, I assume. As with any true craft, the best and perhaps only way is through an apprenticeship. I had to beg for a while, but eventually I was allowed to receive shimush from the renowned Mr.

Leitman in Boro Park, an elderly watchmaker straight out of the storybooks. He’s fiercely passionate about his work, sharp as a whip, and skilled in a way that only seven decades of work can teach you. I would do little things like repair batteries while he did the heavy lifting, and in exchange, he allowed me to observe and learn the ways of the trade.
I have to really get in there and make it look as if it was never tampered with — the ultimate mark of true craftsmanship.
A watch’s inner mechanics are so intricate. What do you see in there, and what does your work entail?
Watches are divided in two general categories: quartz and mechanical. The first type uses a battery whose electrical current causes quartz crystals to vibrate, triggering the movements we see on the face. Mechanical watches, which have been around for many centuries, are where the art of watchmaking is preeminent. They work with a spring that is wound by hand or by the everyday movements of the watch-wearer. The spring exerts a force on a series of tiny gears that lead to the balance wheel, which controls the movement of the watch’s hands. Now, I’m not a clockmaker; I work exclusively with watches where the aforementioned mechanisms are very

small. This requires so much more precision because even the tiniest thing being off will hinder the watch’s operations.
How does your work differ when working on expensive watches versus cheaper ones? A watch can be more expensive because of its value as a piece of jewelry or because the internal mechanism is of higher quality — or, as is often the case, a combination of the two. This internal mechanism is called the watch’s movement, and it’s what makes the watch execute its functions. Most watch brands do not build their own movements; they are purchased from a handful of manufacturers who create models of higher and lower quality. When it comes to cheaper movement, it’s generally preferred to just buy a new one. With the high-end ones, I have to really get in there and make it look as if it was never tampered with — the ultimate mark of true craftsmanship.
What type of issues do you see? Other than something breaking, the gears are tiny and need to be well oiled so that they function smoothly. Often, they just require disassembly, cleaning and an oil change to get them good as new.
You made some waves a while back when you suggested a reason for why we move the clock at 2 a.m. What was your theory? Before I repeat it, I should note that the real reason we move the clock at 2 a.m. is because back when daylight saving time was first instituted, a primary concern was how it would impact train schedules, and Sunday at 2 a.m. was just about the

quietest time of the week. Anyway, I offered an additional pshat that might explain the peculiar timing: Watches that include a date display have a gear that’s designed to move it to the next day, but you’ll notice that the changeover doesn’t occur at once. Instead, it is a slow process that takes a couple of hours around midnight, when the date hangs sort of in-between. During that time, the gear is engaged, so it is recommended that you don’t change anything else on the watch for risk of damaging it. So I suggested that perhaps this might be another reason we wait until 2 a.m.
What piece of advice would you give watch owners? Treat your timepiece with respect, and it will return the favor. Water resistant means only that: If it happens to get wet, you’ll be fine — don’t go jumping into the pool with it. Lastly, automatic watches still need to be wound if they aren’t worn every day. The movements when wearing it are enough to keep it going, but only for a while.
One more question: Is a broken clock actually right twice a day? I should have come better prepared for this hard-hitting interview… Well, a stopped clock is right twice a day. A broken clock can be right far less often than that, if it runs faster or slower than actual time. And this is true only for a stopped analog clock, not a digital one. I should also note that in addition to being right sometimes, stopped clocks are also preferred because they generally just require a new battery or a simple fix.

Back in the day, before the advent of pocket watches, consulting clock towers was a popular way to keep track of time. Those towers were built higher than all the other buildings in the city so people could easily see the time on the clock wherever they were. Today these clock towers still beautify their cities, though they’re no longer needed as timekeepers. BY: CHAYA BLUSTEIN

ST. MARK’S CLOCK It would be sad to look at this clock if the tale told about it were true: that the creators of the clock were blinded upon completing it so that it would remain the most impressive of its kind. Thankfully, that’s just a legend, and the true story is quite different. Gian Paolo and Gian Carlo Rainieri, the father and son who created the clock, actually went on to live in the clock tower for five generations as the family was entrusted with its upkeep. The clock was built in 1499 so that the sailors Venice was famous for in those days could calculate when would be the best time to set sail. To serve its purpose, the clock was constructed to be extraordinarily accurate — so much so that in 1858, the Venetian government declared that all clocks in Venice should be set to the time St. Mark’s clock kept.

A Swiss Timepiece:
ZYTGLOGGE CLOCK TOWER Eight hundred years old and still keeping time — that’s pretty impressive. Zytglogge Clock (zytglogge means time bell in Bernese German) is located in Bern, Switzerland. Once upon a time, all clocks in Bern conformed to the Zytglogge’s time. This clock also boasts a more colorful history: At one point its tower served as a prison in addition to its keeping time. There’s a show to be seen at the Zytglogge; it has small figurines that do a little dance starting four minutes before the clock strikes every hour. The figurines were added later, so they’ve been performing for nearly five hundred years now.
The Biggie:
BIG BEN What’s so big about Big Ben? This clock tower features a tremendous, fourteen- ton bell that rings on the hour. The bell’s so big it got the nickname Big Ben. The clock and tower share the name today, though the official name for the tower is Elizabeth Tower. If you wanted to see the bell, you’d need to climb up 334 steps on a narrow, spiral staircase — no elevator. Getting such a huge bell up such a narrow staircase was no easy feat. It took 30 hours for the bell to get to its home at the top of the tower! It’s unlikely you’d be allowed in, though, because in 2010, the United Kingdom decided to allow only citizens into the tower. You’re still welcome to pose in front of the tower, though, and there’s no doubt about it: If you do, everyone will know you’ve been to London.

Revolutionary:
SPASSKAYA TOWER CLOCK What came first, the tower or the clock? In this case, the tower came first. Although Spasskaya Tower was built in 1491, the Kremlin Clock may have been added decades later. The tower overlooks Red Square in Moscow, Russia’s capital city. Standing right near the Kremlin, Russia’s seat of government, it’s a clock tower that has been witness to Russia’s many revolutions. Its chimes first rang out in song during the times of the Czars, but soon enough, in 1918, the clock’s bells began playing the anthem of the new communist government. Over the decades, the clock underwent a number of restorations and remained silent for much of the time. In the 1990s, when work on the clock resumed once again, the national anthem complicated things since it required three more bells than the clock actually had, leading to the country adopting a different anthem. Finally, in the year 2000, the bell began playing the newly approved national anthem of the Russian Federation.

Duc d’Orléans Breguet Sympathique Sold for $6.8 million at auction, the Duc d’Orleans clock might be the most expensive clock you can own. Besides being stunningly decorated with gold sculptures and red tortoiseshell, it also has a unique feature: a docking pocket watch. Back in the 1800s, pocket watches had to be rewound every night to regulate the time properly. Breguet was a French watchmaker determined to figure out a way to regulate watches without the hassle of winding. He created the Sympathique, which was a pocket watch that would be set by a clock every night. Three tiny holes in the pocket watch corresponded to three tiny pins that came out of the clock every night and set the watch’s time with the clock’s movement. The Sympathiques were so complicated to make that it took years to complete each one. They were a marvel in their time. This one was constructed for the Duc d’Orleans (yes, he was the Duke of Orleans, in France) and was named for him.

Six of a Kind:
OTTOMAN CLOCKS IN ERETZ YISROEL Sultan Abdul Hamid II built about a hundred clock towers in 1901 to celebrate 25 years of his reign over the Ottoman Empire. Six clock towers were constructed in Eretz Yisroel, which was part of the Empire at the time: in Yaffo (today Tel Aviv), Tzfas, Yerushalayim, Haifa, Acco and Shechem. Although most of them are still around today, they don’t keep time accurately anymore.
124
Yerushalayim:
Haifa:
This clock used to stand above Shaar Yaffo in the Old City. It was demolished in 1922 when the British controlled the city.
The most famous of the six Ottoman clock towers, it stands to this day overlooking Clock Square in Tel Aviv-Yaffo. It features the seal of the Sultan engraved in relief on the side of the tower. The seal was recently restored.
Tzfas:
Shechem:
Four stories high, Tzfas’ clock tower was originally an Ottoman government office. It still has its original bell, which trills every half-hour.
In today’s political climate, putting this one on your list of tourist sites to visit is not recommended.

Acco: The clock tower in Acco is above what used to be an inn called Khan al-Umdan (khan means inn in Arabic). It has four unique clock faces, each of which shows a different kind of numeral. One has alef-beis, one has Arabic numbers, another has Roman numerals, and the last one shows the standard numbers we use today.

Oldie but Goodie:
THE ORLOJ OF PRAGUE
The oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world is located in the city of Prague. It was constructed in 1410 and shows various ways of keeping time. One way begins the day at sunset and uses Gothic numerals to display the time. Then there are Roman numerals, which show a regular 24-hour day. The third is Babylonian time, which divides the day into twelve equal hours of sunlight. One hand of the clock has a sun at the end, so that as the hand moves, it shows the sun’s position in the sky. The other hands show the moon and stars, so astronomers can picture what the night sky would look like. A second, lower clock face is a calendar, showing the months of the year. Because this clock is so detailed, it wasn’t built high up. Instead it’s almost at ground level so that astronomers passing by could see all the precise information it offered.

This One’s Grand:
GRAND CENTRAL STATION CLOCK Like any self-respecting big city, New York also has its famous clock, but being a young city, its landmark clock is neither centuries old nor on a tower. At the entrance to the Grand Central Terminal in New York, right above its information booth, sits a huge clock. It’s estimated to be worth close to $20 million, with an intricate brass design and four faces constructed from opal, a semiprecious stone. It was built in 1914 by Connecticut clock company Seth Thomas. Of famous city clocks, this one is unique in that it is set by an atomic clock, so it may be one of the most accurate timekeepers.

NIAGARA PARKS’ FLORAL CLOCK
Here’s one clock that’s fun to keep checking: A huge clock in Niagara Parks that’s filled with flowers twice a year. Contrasting colored flowers create attractive designs on the clock face, and sometimes even words. Various designs have graced the clock since it was first constructed in 1950, and you can check out pictures of those designs if you enter the tower behind the clock. There, you’ll also see chimes, which ring every fifteen minutes. Up to 16,000 flowers are used to cover the 40-foot wide face, which makes it one of the biggest floral clocks in the world. It’s also one of the most famous, located near the Niagara Parkway. So if you’re going to the Falls, snap a picture here, too!

A LOCAL LOOK AT THE TIME Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower Clock Would you believe that Brooklyn has a clock tower that’s taller than Big Ben? The four-sided clock on the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, at 1 Hanson Place, was the largest of its kind when it was built. By 1962 there were bigger clocks, but at 17 feet tall, these clock faces are still eye-catching.
Brooklyn Borough Hall Clock Brooklyn’s Borough Hall on Joralemon Street also features a large clock. The Hall was built in a vintage architectural style, all the way down to the clock. Built in 1858, before everyone just checked the time on their phone, this clock also served any clock’s basic purpose: to inform people of the time.
Fifth Avenue Clock The sidewalk clock in front of 200 Fifth Avenue, across from Madison Square, has been standing for over one hundred years. The clock was originally installed by the Fifth Avenue Hotel located at the address. In keeping with the high-end nature of the hotel, their cast-iron clock was gilded in gold. When the hotel moved they took along the clock, but the new owners of the building did passersby a favor and replaced the hotel’s clock with an identical new one, so that everyone on the busy street would have a convenient way of checking the time. Oh, and it looked good, too.
Barthman’s Sidewalk Clock You have to admire this brilliant marketing strategy. Barthman’s Jewelers, located at Broadway and Maiden Lane, embedded a clock into the sidewalk in front of their store in 1899. If you were staring at the ground, you’d know you were near Barthman’s. Street clocks in those days were a popular form of advertising. Barthman’s ad was definitely in a great place: An estimate done in 1946 during the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. found 51,000 people stepping on the clock every single day! Barthman’s has since moved, but the clock is still in its original location.

Rav Avigdor Miller
ON MAKEUP FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS Posted on May 11, 2021by TorasAvigdor
Q: A:
Do you feel that there’s anything wrong with high school girls wearing makeup?
I think it’s an important question, so pay attention. I know that fifty girls came here tonight to hear the lecture so listen well. We see it’s an important Torah principle that women should make themselves presentable to their husbands. It’s considered an important thing. However, this is for married women and at home. Married women on the street should try to limit the conspicuous forms of makeup. At home, for your husband, it’s a mitzvah. It’s a mitzvah always to be beautiful at home. The women, however, who welcome their husband on hands and knees on the floor, scrubbing the floor and he walks in – and she’s crabby too – but when she goes into the street she’s dressed fit to kill, she is doing just the opposite of her function. She makes herself attractive to strangers and not to her husband. And that’s exactly what the Yetzer Hara wants. And therefore, home is the place to be attractive. On the street, be as plain as possible. Still better, you shouldn’t be seen. Girls, as much as possible don’t be seen. Now, if you’re not married, you don’t need makeup unless you have to go out. It pays to invest efforts to get a chashuveh ben Torah and a chashuve ben Torah – even a Lakewooder or even a Satmerer – also wants something with good wrappings around it. And therefore, you should make it your business to go to the beautician before you go out your first or second time. Otherwise, high school girls who are not in the marriage market yet should avoid wearing any makeup. It’s a waste of effort and it’s applied in the wrong situation. TAPE # 52 (July 1974)

We can have a watch on our hands and a clock on the wall, but sometimes our brains play games with us, and we end up at the right place, but at the wrong time. This is especially true in the haze following a time change, when our bodies — and sometimes our clocks — are not yet set to the correct timing. Here, people share about the times the gears in their time-tellers, or simply in their brains, were not functioning at their best, making for some interesting predicaments.
Names have been omitted, since contributors preferred the cloak of anonymity.
“Wake up!” my sister whispered urgently. “The bus was here ten minutes ago!” It was a dreary morning, the sky was overcast, and I was dragged out of slumber — cobwebs in my eyes and in every crevice of my mind — to the news that we were not going to make it in time for school. Unless we really, really hurried. In a flash, we got dressed and stuffed some food in our school bags, hoping our stomachs wouldn’t grumble until we could grab a bite to eat at recess time. We catapulted ourselves out the door, closing it on a slumbering home (our younger siblings were off on Sunday). Three hills stood between our home and school, and we were determined to conquer them in record time. Huffing and puffing, we sprinted up the first, egging each other on to make the twenty-minute walk in sixteen minutes, tops. We halfran past quiet, shuttered homes. There was always something depr e s si n g
about going to school on Sunday, but today we paid no heed to the peacefulness enveloping the rest of the world. We aced the second hill, our breaths in our throats, and then walked, faster, faster, faster, literally racing against the clock. Up the third hill we went, eyeing each other triumphantly. It looked like we were going to make it! We still had five minutes to school start and just a two-minute walk left. Panting, we came to a stop in front of the building and pushed the door open, our hearts ricocheting in our rib cages. It was eerily quiet. And dark. We looked at each other. Then at our watches, squinting in confusion. It was 7:58, one hour and two minutes before school was set to begin.
As a single girl, I lived in a basement apartment with no windows, really deep down in the bowels of the earth.
One Friday night I wasn’t feeling well, and so I took a Tylenol PM and conked out. I fell into a really deep sleep, and when I woke up hours later, I looked at the clock and saw that it said 8 o’clock. I knew that Tylenol PM worked well... but that well?! Did I really just sleep for close to 20 hours? Apparently, I had slept through the entire Shabbos! I ran to wake up my roommate, who was also sleeping. I figured she had lain down for a nap sometime in the afternoon. When I woke her, I told her that Shabbos was over, and we both looked at the clock in shock. Somehow, the day had flown by... She shrugged, and then said, “Okay, so I guess we have to make Havdalah.” “Wait,”I said. “Before Havdalah, let me just make sure that it’s really Motzei Shabbos.” I went up, up, up, the stairs and outdoors... only to find the sun shining brightly. It was 8 a.m. on Shabbos morning. Later, I mentioned the story to my landlord. Laughing, he said, “Oh! Now I understand the Gemara about someone who is inside a cave and doesn’t know what time it is...”
I was in high school, a popular kid and G.O. head to boot. I’m fairly certain that no one would dream with whom I had an appointment each week. And then one week, I mixed up the timing and arrived at my therapist at the wrong time. Big deal, we all do that sometimes, right? But as I was making my oblivious way in, I bumped into someone who was exiting the very office I was headed to. Another high schooler. Wearing the same uniform as me. It took but a few seconds of shock to realize that it was… my G.O. partner! This led to a whole new level of awkwardness, of which I will spare you the gory details. I think the unhappiest camper was my (our!) therapist, who couldn’t believe how I so neatly messed up her entire year of carefully arranging our appointments so we wouldn’t cross paths near her office.

I slowed my pace and got myself ready. Then, with a glance at the clock, I saw that there was still some time before Shabbos, so I quickly gave the bathroom one more wipe down, the sink one more rinse, and the kitchen floor one last sweep. Then I glanced out the window — and jumped. Why were so many women, all calm and dressed in their Shabbos best, sitting outside so early? Why, it almost looked as though Shabbos had already come... I glanced at the clock again, and then froze: I’d been thinking in camp time! It was not three-quarters of an hour before candle lighting; it was a quarter of an hour after! And I hadn’t yet bentched licht! With three minutes to go to shkiah, I moved faster than I ever had in my life and quickly welcomed the Shabbos Queen, utterly and deeply grateful for the iconic circle of women sitting outside in the fading light.
I woke up in a panic and checked the time. Half past the hour! That meant walking to school, and I wanted to make sure I’d have company for the trek. Instinctively, I reached for the cordless phone near my bed and dialed the number of Shaindy, my neighbor and friend. It’s good my fingers knew the dance on their own, because I was still bleary-eyed and sleepy. “Hello?” Mrs. Stein answered in a groggy voice, very unlike her usual perky self. “Can I speak with Shaindy?” I asked. There was a pause. “What time is it?” I looked at the clock, and my heart nearly slipped right to the floor. It was not half past eight, as I thought, but half past four! I turned to the window and suddenly noticed the dark sky — and my entire world turned dark. I don’t recall what I said or whether I apologized or tried to explain what this nocturnal phone call was all about. But I do remember that I didn’t call or visit the Steins for a recordbreaking week or more after the story.
I’d never been to Eretz Yisroel before, and when my sister married off her son there, it was the perfect opportunity to hop onto the plane for my longawaited vacation with my husband. Except that while we left most of our children home, we were accompanied by the baby — and our kallah. Some vacation, I tell you… but a beautiful trip it was! This trip was not my husband’s first, or even fifth, visit to the land, and so he didn’t think we’d need to stay more than three days, tops. We were going just to participate in the wedding, right? But we ended up planning for a week. It wasn’t fair to make it any longer, both for the sake of the beautiful family we’d left behind and for that of my married daughter who was kind enough to hold the fort for us while we traveled across the ocean. I told my travel agent to book us tickets so we’d arrive Wednesday morning and leave Tuesday night. Tuesday, December 20, was the day gaily marked on my married daughter’s calendar. She’d survive until then, she assured us. After Shabbos sheva brachos, the farewells began. Every day we said goodbye to various members of the family who were heading back to New York. Some on Sunday, a few on Monday night, and then it was our turn. We could still enjoy a full day on Tuesday, since our flight wasn’t until 1:15 at night. We packed up, checked out of our rooms, and after making one last stop in Bnei Brak, made our way to the airport. “We’re here, we’re here,” we assured my married daughter on the phone as we waited to check in. She sounded more than ready to give us back the reins. “B’ezras Hashem, we’ll see you tomorrow morning!” When our turn finally came, the ticket agent eyed my passport and my ticket. Then my husband’s. “You’re not on this flight,” he told us drily. “You were scheduled for the 20th.” Oh. It was Tuesday no longer. Today was the 21st, as of 12:00 a.m.! Our tickets, however, had been for Monday night — aka very early Tuesday the 20th! A quick call to our travel agent had him making a few other calls and pulling a great deal of strings, until he got us onto the flight. How thankful we were as we swiped the $500 fee — which they had at first warned would be well over $2,000 — and gained admission to the big bird that would transport us back to our waiting family, not a minute sooner and not a minute later than we were destined to get home.

How Luxury Wristwatches Came To Be During World War I, when soldiers in trenches relied on time signals instead of the previously used voice signals, pocket watches — which needed to be hand-held to view the precise time — became too cumbersome. To solve this issue, they tied pocket watches around their wrists using leather straps, thus inventing the modern-day wristwatch. Around that time, Cartier began producing limited edition wristwatch models at steep prices, and others soon followed suit.
The Used Watch Market Because of the exorbitant prices of many high-end watches, there is a flourishing secondhand market for brand-name timepieces. Buyers should be extremely wary of counterfeits, though, and are advised to find out whether the piece underwent any repairs or contains any replacement parts, which can greatly diminish its value.
Did You Know? It takes a full year to make a single Rolex watch. Each one is crafted by hand with immense care, with every component created in-house before being pieced together by superskilled experts. When the piece is finally complete, it undergoes a severe testing process to ensure it is up to par.
Every Rolex watch is made with the most expensive stainless steel in the world to prevent pitting, corrosion and rust. The most expensive Rolex watch ever sold was owned by an American actor and later sold at auction for a whopping $17.8 million.
Known for their precise timekeeping, Tag Heuer watches were the official timekeepers of three Olympic games: in Antwerp of 1920, in Paris in 1924, and in Amsterdam in 1928.

Luxury Features Wondering what you (or anyone else) pay for when purchasing a watch worth a couple of thousand or even million (gulp) dollars? Here’s a layman’s guide to some of the features expensive watches offer: Expensive Materials Most high-end watches are created using expensive gold or silver, or has a high copper content to produce a beautiful piece. Some, especially luxury sport watches, are made from ceramic, which is significantly more lightweight. And don’t forget the sapphire crystal every luxury watch worthy of its name boasts.
Expert Movement The reliability of a timepiece’s movement is worth a great deal. Rolex’s movements are considered some of the most accurate, reliable and highquality, and this is a big reason for their brand’s standing as one of the top three in luxury watches. Breitling’s B01 movements, like others, are manufactured in-house, allowing the company full control over reliability and precision. Another example of a highly coveted watch movement is the Patek Philippe Grand Complications collection. Also built in-house, this one has a perpetual programmed calednar, is hand-wound (yes, such features still exist!), and is quite small in size — despite comprising 496 parts.
Limited Editions and Quantities As with anything luxury, producing a limited quantity of a style to be sold to a few fortunate buyers, as well as producing a limited edition, greatly increases the purchasing value. Hand Made Many high-end watches are made by hand, by specialty workers at the brand’s facility, from start to finish.
Swiss Made Legally, a watch is considered “Swiss Made” if the movement is put together, encased, and passes inspection in Switzerland, and this represents 60% of the watch’s production cost. The true reason Swiss watches have made it to the top in the industry is the country’s lengthy watchmaking history, spanning 500-plus years of being effectively managed and well maintained.
