(Re: The Mega Magnet Match, Issue 09) I want to congratulate your opening in Boro Park. We really enjoy your beautiful, well-written magazine. I’m writing about the contest you featured calling for all children to build creations with toys, in which the photos have to be emailed to The Boro Park View to enter a drawing. Being in the era of awareness of the dangers of technology, and with so many homes having no computers or email access, why not target the entire ehrliche community? Why don’t you give the option of mailing submissions so that the thousands of families heeding the call of gedolei hador can join the program too? Technology-Free THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: Thank you for your letter. Our mailing address is 1274 49th Street, Suite 421, Brooklyn, NY 11219, and we welcome correspondences via post. decided to tap into the opportunity that literally knocks on my door. I began offering water bottles to meshulachim, and on frigid nights, I try to offer a cup of hot tea to those collecting tzedakah in the cold. Thank you for the inspiration. A Grateful Reader

on the road, we teach our children to take out a sefer Tehillim and recite kapital chaf together. This not only indirectly teaches them not to view emergency situations as public spectacles, but it also helps them feel empathy for the patient’s family, as they do the only thing in our power when someone is in an eis tzarah. TRICKS FROM MY KITCHEN

YOUR VOICE

(Re: FYI: Kitchen Hacks, Issue 09) I read your article on kitchen hacks — some great ideas there that I hope to try! I would like to share with your readers some kitchen shortcuts employed and enjoyed in our home. Since cottage cheese and sour cream are major items in our home, and once they’re opened they get watery very quickly, we started storing opened containers upside down, and the difference is huge. The contents stay fresh for longer without becoming watery. We also keep vegetables crisp and fresh by storing them in a bag or container with paper towels — or even lining the produce drawer with paper towels. This is a great trick for when cutting up fruits or a salad in advance. The paper towels absorb the moisture, preventing the produce from becoming wilted. Another great tip I’d like to share for busy mornings is that fresh popcorn can actually be frozen with great results. We usually pop a big batch, which we distribute into many sandwich bags. In the morning, the kids grab a bag from the freezer, and enjoy a delicious, fresh, homemade snack by the time recess rolls around. L.F.

LESSONS LEARNED (Re: And Everyone Was Gawking, Issue 08) I commend you for encouraging parents to teach their children sensitivity in times of crisis. Whenever we see a Hatzolah truck passing, be it on our block or

I’ll never forget the day an unanchored food closet fell on my four-year-old, knocking her over and coming very close to causing untold harm. Terror ran through me when I saw her little body pinned under the heavy closet, and I could do little more than screech for my older children to summon our next-door neighbor while I bumbled about, trying to correctly punch in Hatzolah’s phone number. Trembling from head to toe, my wits were not about me, but eventually I reached the dispatcher and help was on the way.

HOW A YID BEHAVES I was recently downtown for yet another vouchers appointment. The clerk who handled my case was downright nasty — to put it nicely. She was extremely rude, yelling angrily whenever a document wasn’t exactly in order or when I didn’t perfectly understand her instructions. Understandably, this made my appointment experience very intimidating and unpleasant. After the woman yelled at me for the upteenth time, I’d had it. I decided to find her supervisor and give her a piece of my mind. At the very last moment, however, Hashem put an idea into my head. I smiled at the clerk and politely said, “I must hand it to you! You deal with all kinds of people all day, and need to get through all of their gibberish, and you manage to stay so calm and oriented!” She looked at me in amazement and replied, “Ma’am, I’m sitting here for many hours dealing with one person after the next. And this is the first compliment I’ve received all day!” Then she said, “You know, people always complain, and no matter what I do or how I act, people criticize me and report me to my superiors. So why act nicely if people don’t appreciate it? Why smile if they’ll report me anyway? This is why I grew accustomed to acting the way I do!” After this exchange, this woman began acting like a friend. She assisted me in a very pleasant way, and even helped me with my papers that were incorrectly prepared! I’m sharing this story and the lessons I learned here so you, too, can learn from it. First, making a kiddush Hashem is so easy! Just by displaying proper conduct and middos, I presented an image of ideal Yiddish behavior, the proper behavior of the Am Hanivchar. Second, “K’mayim panim el panim...” This act was also to my benefit, as it enabled me to deal with a much happier and more helpful clerk, an advantage I would not have gained by complaining to her boss… With hopes of hearing more such stories in the future! Parshas Chayei Sarah By: Malka Schneps

In Parshas Chayei Sarah, Avraham Avinu dispatched Eliezer to the land of Avraham’s relatives to seek a shidduch for Yitzchak. When Eliezer reached the communal well outside the city, he asked Hashem for a sign: When the destined girl approached, she would not only offer him water to drink, but she would offer to quench the thirst of his camels as well. At that very moment, a girl approached the well. Eliezer was astonished to witness how the water of the well miraculously rose up to the top, making the job of drawing water easier for the girl. At that point, Eliezer approached to test her. He requested water, looking to see if she would then offer water for his camels as well. Indeed, the girl was Rivka Imeinu, and she did offer water to Eliezer — and to his camels, as well. In fact, she went above and beyond, offering to provide the camels with water until they finished drinking. This was incredibly kind, as ten large, thirsty camels drink a great deal, and she was offering to water them one jug at a time until satiation. A single thirsty camel can drink 30 gallons of water in fifteen minutes. This means that ten thirsty camels would drink 300 gallons of water in fifteen minutes! We see in the pasuk that Rivka ran back and forth between the well and the watering trough to provide water for the camels until they drank their fill. There was one final step that would help Eliezer ascertain that this was indeed the right girl: One of Avraham’s requirements for the shidduch was that the girl should be from among his relatives. However, after Rivka finished providing the camels with water, Eliezer already offered her the jewelry and only afterward inquired as to her family of origin. Rashi explains that Eliezer gave Rivka the gifts before ensuring that she came from the right family because he trusted that, in the zechus of Avraham Avinu, Hakadosh Baruch Hu had led him to the right girl. Stepping back, a question emerges. Why did Eliezer not offer Rivka the jewelry after witnessing the miracle of the water rising up to meet her? Apparently, Eliezer was not confident that he had found the right girl even after seeing the miracles performed for her, so he con-

34 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

tinued to test her. But Eliezer didn’t insist on completely verifying that she was the right girl, for we see that he gave her the jewelry before asking about her family background. Clearly, the act of Rivka watering the camels was enough to seal the deal, whereas the miracle of the water rising to meet her was not. Furthermore, the Torah goes on to praise Rivka Imeinu in that when Yitzchak took Rivka into the tent, he was comforted for the petirah of his mother. Rashi explains that the three miracles of Sarah Imeinu’s tent returned with the arrival of Rivka: The candles remained lit from Erev Shabbos to Erev Shabbos, there was a bracha in the dough, and a cloud hovered above her tent. These miracles are hinted at with only a few words in the Torah, yet several pesukim describe the gemilas chasadim of Rivka. The picture that emerges is that more weight is given to the chesed of Rivka than to the miracles performed for her. The Brisker Rav, zt”l, explains that gemilas chasadim are more meaningful than miracles because Hashem performs the miracles, whereas a person performs the acts of gemilas chasadim. Thus, acts of gemilas chasadim are to a person’s own credit, whereas miracles are not. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, relates a story about R’ Lieber Hagadol of Berdichev, zt”l. R’ Lieber once saw a woman crying at the side of the road because the goat whose diary products had been her source of income had died. R’ Lieber told her he would buy her a new goat. As R’ Lieber ran to the market, he met Eliyahu Hanavi. R’ Lieber did not stop, but told Eliyahu Hanavi that he did not have time because he needed to go buy a goat for a poor woman. This story shows that chesed is even greater than meeting Eliyahu Hanavi. Doing acts of chesed is more impressive than having miracles performed for us, and greater than meeting Eliyahu Hanavi. Incredibly, opportunities to do chesed are free and are all around us. From sharing a recipe or watching your neighbor’s children, to helping another woman reach an item on the shelf in the grocery store, we have countless opportunities every day to do chesed for those around us. May we all walk in the footsteps of our Imahos and rush to help others each and every day.

As Temperatures Drop, State Opens Heating Assistance Program With the cold weather settling in all too early for most of us, a staterun program opened last week will provide some relief, with more than $372 million in heating assistance allocated for low- and middle-income residents of New York State. The state’s Home Energy Assistance Program, known as HEAP, began accepting applications on November 13 and can provide eligible households with a one-time benefit of up to $726. Applications are accepted at local departments of social services, and those living in the five boroughs can also apply online at the City’s Office of Temporary and Disability website, www.otda.ny.gov. Eligibility is based on several factors, including income and number of people living in the household. A family of four with an annual income of up to $55,178 per year would be eligible for HEAP, with assistance provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The program also includes an additional emergency benefit for those who are at risk of having their heat shut off by their local utility company or those running out of fuel and lack the financial wherewithal to replenish their supply. Applications for those extra benefits will be accepted at local social service departments as of January 2. Over 772,000 residents in New York City qualified for HEAP last year, and with higher energy prices looming, those who qualify are encouraged to apply early to avoid being shut out. “As cold winter weather approaches, this administration is steadfast in its commitment to assisting vulnerable New Yorkers struggling to pay their heating bills,” said Cuomo.

“Whether it's senior citizens on a fixed income, or low-income working families, this assistance will keep New Yorkers safe and help them avoid having to choose between buying food or paying their heating bill.”

Felder Slams Mayor for Reneging on Promise to Streamline Special Ed Process Senator Simcha Felder took to the steps of City Hall for a press conference last week, accusing Mayor Bill de Blasio of defaulting on a 2014 promise to speed up reimbursements to families whose children are enrolled in private schools because their special education needs cannot be met by the public school system. Felder, who has a grandchild with special education needs, was joined by special needs children, their families and educators at the November 12th press conference. The Senator minced no words as he accused the mayor of failing to follow through on his commitment to ensure that reimbursements are paid out in a timely fashion, a process that can currently take many months. “Children who are used to being left out are once again being neglected, this time by the city,” said Felder. “We are talking about serving New York’s most vulnerable kids. Today, the torture these families endure at the hands of the city is worse than ever. What they go through, year after year, is a cruel and unusual punishment.” A statement issued by Felder cited a report from the New York State Department of Education that

38 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

found that the city had been in violation of federal laws for years by not providing proper services to special education students. The failures have been occurring at nearly every level of the city’s educational system, according to the report, which named the city’s late reimbursements one of its worst violations. “The rights afforded under the law are clear, the guidelines are clear, yet despite repeated calls for improvement, this administration has let children languish by neglecting its lawful responsibility,” said Felder. “The city’s wanton disregard for the law has victimized these families long enough.” A report released by City Councilman Chaim Deutsch said that he too had been hearing from parents of children with special education needs who have encountered numerous obstacles when dealing with the Department of Education. Deutsch said that he had paid a surprise visit to the Brooklyn Department of Education’s hearing office and was working with both city and state officials to explore possible solutions to the problems identified. “The bottom line is, special needs children deserve equitable access to education,” said Deutsch. “Their parents deserve to be able to advocate for their children without going bankrupt. I will not rest until we successfully reform the system that serves some of our city’s most vulnerable.”

CHAPTER TEN Dazed and skeptical about Alexander Korman’s offer, the Potolskys begin to look into pushing up Tzippy’s wedding to Rosh Chodesh Teves. The mechutanim are even more skeptical about the whole thing, but after talking it over with their son, the chasan, they agree to look into it too.

Yerushalayim

“I feel bad for Tzippy.” Yaakov raised his head from the electric bill he was studying. “Huh?” “I feel bad for Tzippy,” his wife repeated. “Your sister?” “Which other Tzippy would I be talking about?” He folded the bill. “I guess it should be obvious that you mean your sister, but why do you feel bad for her? She’s a kallah, isn’t she?” Miri tilted her chair back a bit, a habit she had not been able to kick since second grade. “Yes, she’s a kallah, and I think she’s very happy, baruch Hashem. But when I think about the financial situation in my parents’ house, which has gotten worse than it was before our wedding, I feel so torn for her. And that’s even with my mother’s new job. I’m not sure they will even be able to rent in Bnei Brak, and they’ll have to go live in some remote hole in the wall right after the wedding. And there’s no way to know when or how they will ever get an apartment of their own. I know my parents are very stressed out about the whole subject.” She fell silent for

a minute and stared at the table. “I’m not sure they even started doing any shopping, you know, kallah kind of shopping... I wish I could take her to Berman’s sale with about 4,000 shekel in my wallet.” Yaakov smiled. “Four thousand shekel? What will you buy with that? Towels with golden tassels?” “Oh, Yaakov, you have no idea,” his wife said seriously. “Not golden tassels, but do you know how much a good set of linen costs? Our blue-green set cost about 300 shekel, and it’s not even an expensive one. And you need quite a few towels, and all that’s only one part of the shopping. I haven’t even touched on sheva brachos outfits and some good weekday clothes, and pots and dishes for a starter kitchen, and a broom and dustpan and mop and pail and an ironing board. Oh, and what about appliances and furniture?” “So 4,000 shekel really isn’t enough for all that.” “Right.” Miri tipped her chair forward again. “But that was the number on my paycheck, so that’s what popped into my head.” Yaakov was quiet for a long minute.

Tzippy’s eyes to be constantly lighting up — even if she, Elisheva, was not the actual source of it. “Good. That’s very good-quality stuff. Put it all in a bag on top of the closet in the bedroom, where no one can get to it.” “Sure.” Tzippy packed the items back into the bag as Elisheva gazed at her lovingly. What difference did it make who did what, as long as her child was truly happy? “What do you say, Tatty?” Elisheva asked. “It’s a nice gift, isn’t it? Shimon walked into the small apartment and wiped his brow. None of those present noticed him through the thick cloud of cigarette smoke that hung in the room. Sitting at a desk at the entrance was Benny, scanning page after page, and storing all the information that was written there in his brilliant brain. “Nu?” Shimon asked. “Are you back?” Benny raised his eyes and then went back to his papers. “Good. Tomorrow night we need to get to the border again. Akiva says it’s a group of 11 children.” “From a convent?” “Yes, near Lublin.” “Lublin! How are they getting a group from there to our border?” “Don’t know,” Benny murmured. “I’m just thinking about the work we have to do here; I can’t think about how they are managing there. But so far they seem to be doing just fine, baruch Hashem.” “Now tell me, how have we done 26 transfers from Slovakia, but missed one place here?” “We did?” Benny put down his papers. “What did we miss?” “The former Catholic orphanage, named for Lucius Jan.” “Oh, that? Farash’s place? He’s a real anti-Semite and very pro-Nazi; there’s no one there. He refused to hide even a single Jewish child; Bruno told me that. The Underground contacted him twice during the Nazi occupation, and he firmly refused.” “But it’s worth checking into.” Shimon sat down and put his wallet on the table in a prominent place. “Oh, your Communist friend! I forgot about him. What news does he have?” “I’m coming from town hall. He told me last week about an inspection they were planning at the orphanage. I wasn’t familiar with the name of it, and I asked him to nose around a bit for me.” “Nu?” “It’s possible that there is one Jewish child there.” “How will we check it out?” “Stachov will help us out.” To be continued...

Strong Economic Results Boost Trump THE PULSE: The Dow Jones Industrials set another re-

cord high closing at 28,004 points, capping a four-week winning streak. Unemployment numbers remain at their historic lows of 3.6 percent. Sentier Research, a well-respected research group, released a study showing that the typical middle-class family saw an increase in income of approximately $5,000 since Trump’s inauguration. Additionally, there were some positive developments regarding outstanding trade issues. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that a deal on the passage of the administration’s USMCA trade deal with Canada

50 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

and Mexico was imminent. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said that negotiations over the first phase of a U.S.-China trade deal were in their final stages. THE IMPACT: These economic successes continue to buoy President Trump and help him maintain public support in the face of impeachment proceedings over his actions with Ukraine. The continued strong financial numbers also serve to undermine the argument of those who warned of impending economic doom as a result of the administration’s harsh trade policies. If the administration can close in on its trade deals and achieve its trade priorities, and should the U.S. economy continue to maintain its strength through the 2020 election cycle, it will serve to significantly boost Trump’s chances of reelection.

Imagine... Governor Deval Patrick Enters Race THE PULSE: Former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick an-

his candidacy is considered a long shot. However, Patrick’s entry is indicative of the fact that there are heavyweights in the Democratic Party who are concerned about the roster of candidates that the party is currently fielding. They are worried that the party is being pulled too far to the left by the likes of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. They also fear that although Joe Biden is still a leading centrist candidate, his weaknesses have been exposed, and he may be unable to hold his lead throughout a sustained primary challenge. There is also concern that he will falter in what will undoubtedly be a grueling general election.

Democrats Retain Louisiana Governorship THE PULSE: Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards defeated his Republican challenger Eddie Rispone to retain the Louisiana governorship. It is the second Democratic victory in a governor’s race in a deep red state this month. Earlier in the month, Democrat Andy Beshear defeated Republican Governor Matt Bevin in the Kentucky gubernatorial race. THE IMPACT: President Trump campaigned heavily for Bevin and

Rispone. He encouraged Republican voters in Louisiana to hand him a much-needed win and cast the election as a referendum on the impeachment proceedings against him in Washington. The fact that despite Trump’s efforts voters in deep red states were not swayed and chose to elect Democrats may be an indication of trouble for Trump and his reelection bid. However, John Bel Edwards is part of a shrinking breed of conservative Democrats. Many of his positions are out of line with mainstream Democratic orthodoxy. It is likely that his policy positions improved his electability and made it difficult for Rispone to tar him with the label of being a progressive liberal.

lic hearings featured career diplomat and Ukraine chargé d’affaires Bill Taylor and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs George Kent. Former Ukrainian Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch testified on Thursday. They testified under oath to the existence of efforts within the administration to pressure the Ukrainians to investigate the Bidens and to investigate interference in the 2016 election. In closed-door testimony, NSC official Tim Morrison and Mike Pence aide Jennifer Williams testified that Trump’s actions were unusual and inappropriate. REPUBLICAN RESPONSE: Republicans have tried to fend off these allegations by focusing on the process and claiming that the impeachment process approved by congressional Democrats is unfair to the president. They have also focused on the fact that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has refused to allow the original whistleblower to testify. Last, they have dismissed the testimony given to Congress to date as mere hearsay. THE IMPACT: It has yet to be seen if any of these arguments will resonate with voters who are not already stalwart Trump supporters. The impeachment proceedings are now open and in full view. Transcripts have been released. The public will decide for themselves if the process is fair or not. As for the whistleblower, there is a strong argument that his identity needs to be protected both for himself and to enable future whistleblowers to report their concerns without fear of having their identities exposed. Furthermore, there is little to be gained from his actual testimony. The concerns that he highlighted in his complaint have been corroborated by people who have listened in to the call and by mul-

tiple diplomats who have worked in the Ukraine. The public may come to see the constant focus on the whistleblower as nothing more than a diversionary tactic. Additionally, directives handed down through an administration’s chain of command cannot be easily dismissed as mere hearsay. They may not be direct knowledge of a president’s intention, but they are more than mere rumors. This line of defense may collapse if and when Democrats subpoena witnesses with direct knowledge of the president’s directives and orders. DEMOCRATIC

RESPONSE:

Democrats are beginning to phase out the usage of the term quid pro quo and replace it with terms such as extortion and bribery. They feel that Latin words with an unclear meaning will not resonate with the public the same way commonly used words associated with criminality will. Democrats will have to convince the public that the actions of the president regarding Ukraine were not merely wrong, but rise to the level of an abuse of power that necessitates his removal from office. THE IMPACT: There has been

limited movement in either direction with most Democrats strongly denouncing the actions of the president and most Republicans remaining firmly behind him. However, some cracks began to emerge when the president commented negatively on the record of Ambassador Yovanovitch during her testimony. FOX News anchor Bret Baier openly criticized the president for intimidating a witness and said that he likely added an additional article of impeachment against him in real time. On Sunday, Mike Turner, a Republican congressman from Ohio who is a member of a House Committee investigating the president, called the president’s action on Ukraine “alarming” and “not okay.”

A FRESH TAKE ON TURKEY

By: Chana Rivky Spitzer Photo credit: EPIC Portraits 845-213-8865

Whether turkey’s turning up on your menu because of kashrus concerns or as a change from the same old, it can pose a bit of a cooking challenge, as it easily becomes dry and rubbery if done incorrectly. This collection of recipes that are easy enough for every night yields moist and tender turkey that makes a regular weeknight taste and feel like a special occasion.

Sliced Turkey Roast INGREDIENTS

Since I have an aversion to bottled sauces with their abundance of sugar and additives, I’m always trying new ideas to give my meat and poultry dishes flavor without relying on commercial stuff — and this is how this unusual blend of ingredients came about. The apricots add a sweet and tart burst of flavor similar to duck sauce, while the wine and orange juice serve as tenderizers, creating a dish that’s almost too good for a simple supper.

2½–3 lb. whole turkey breasts or cutlets with skin on 1 onion, sliced 1 clove garlic 6 dried apricots (or some apricot jam) ¼ cup white wine ¾ cup orange juice 2 T. honey (or dash of stevia) 1 T. soy sauce ½ tsp. salt ⅛ tsp. white pepper

58 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

DIRECTIONS 1. Place all ingredients except turkey into a 4- to 6-quart pot and cook until boiling. 2. Pull skin tightly around each piece of turkey, and gently place into boiling liquid. Reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for about 2½ hours. 3. Remove from heat. Move turkey pieces to one side of pot and use a hand blender to blend cooking liquids (onion, garlic and apricots included) into a smooth, thick sauce. (You may omit this step if you do not have a fleishig hand blender.) 4. To serve, remove skin from turkey and slice each cutlet into several thick slices.

Turkey Loaf or Burgers INGREDIENTS This basic mix is a winner in versatility. It turns out soft and moist, whether baked, fried or grilled, and with no added carbs or gluten, it can be enjoyed by all.

2–2½ lb. ground turkey

1 large carrot, optional

1 medium onion

3 eggs

1 medium squash

1½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. white pepper

GLAZE (OPTIONAL) ¼ cup mayonnaise

2 T. mustard

¼ cup ketchup

1 tsp. soy sauce

Dash of salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel vegetables and cut into large chunks. Place in bowl of food processor with eggs, salt and pepper, and process until well blended (or grate vegetables by hand using a fine grater). 2. Pour into large bowl and add turkey. Mix until evenly combined. 3. Line baking pan with paper and pour mixture in. Bake at 350° for about 45 minutes. 4. Combine glaze ingredients in cup and spread over top of loaf with spoon. Continue baking for 10 to 20 minutes, or until center of loaf is firm to touch. Note: You can also bake these as individual burgers, shortening the baking time to about 20 minutes. This recipe tastes great grilled or fried, too. For these alternatives, use the glaze as a dipping sauce instead of a topping.

“OF COURSE, EVERYTHING I DID WAS ILLEGAL. WHEN SOMETHING LEGAL IS COMPLETELY AGAINST HUMANITY, YOU HAVE TO FIGHT.”

“The math was simple. In one hour I made 30 fake documents. If I slept for one hour, 30 people would die. So I worked, worked, worked, until I passed out…” He was but a young man, barely past bar mitzvah age, when poverty forced Adolfo Kaminsky to begin working to help put food on his family’s table. The owner of a clothes-dyeing business was seeking an apprentice, and it was there that Adolfo found employment. As he worked with the dyes, watching them mix and swirl to create new hues, the boy’s imagination awakened: What can one do with dye? Much to his mother’s chagrin, Adolfo began experimenting with the dyes at home, in pots and dishes that he’d claimed as his own. His boss, however, found the boy’s fascination with dye amusing and allowed him to experiment at will. These selfguided lessons ended up coming in handy for his boss, as Adolfo learned how to solve any coloring issue that came up, such as removing black ink from a white wedding gown. And then the war came to town, heralded in by duck-stepping soldiers. Instead of going to work, Adolfo and his family were rounded up and incarcerated at Drancy Internment Camp for the simple crime of being Jewish. Fortunately, though, the Kaminskys were Argentinian citizens who were living in France, and the Consul of Argentina was able to intervene and demand their release. But freedom was short-lived: Being Jewish wasn’t something pardonable in occupied France. The Kaminskys knew that in order to survive the slaughter that was happening all across the continent, they would have to “disappear.” To that end, Adolfo was sent to meet with a member of the Resistance to obtain false documentation. ***** “I’ll put you down as a student,” the man code-named Penguin said. “No, because I have to work,” replied Adolfo.

“So what occupation should I put?” Penguin inquired. “Clothing dyer.” At that, Penguin spun on his heel and stared penetratingly at Adolfo. “Do you know how to remove ink stains?” “Of course.” And with that, Adolfo was recruited to the Resistance. ***** Adolfo and a few other talented members of the Resistance set up shop in a Parisian apartment only blocks away from the infamous Notre Dame, posing as artists as a way to explain the pungent chemical smells coming from the apartment to the neighbors. They were racing against the clock, or as Adolfo called it, “racing against death.” While the malach hamaves swept across the land, Adolfo and his crew pulled out pen and ink and began to work. They replaced Jewishsounding names with French ones on some documents, erased bold red stamps that proclaimed the bearer of the document a Jew, prepared new birth certificates to match made-up identities, and forged the signatures of government officials. On average, the young workers were able to produce 500 fraudulent but lifesaving documents a week. One day, however, Adolfo was requested to produce documents for 300 children in only three days. With each child requiring three types of documentation, they’d have to churn out an astonishing 900 official identification papers in only 72 hours. The mission was impossible. Impossible! But impossible was not an option… It was a fight against sleep, a fight against

70 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

death. Despite utter exhaustion, Adolfo forged on forging: erasing, writing, stamping — knowing that with each document, the life of another Jewish child was resting in his hands. The refrain “30 lives an hour” kept playing in his mind. If he was able to make 30 identities in one hour, how could he give in to sleep for even 60 minutes?! Only when his body gave out did he give in, resting just until he could force himself to stay awake once more, and then he continued working. 900 documents in 72 hours. 300 children saved. Mission accomplished. ***** Who was the Paris Forger? Who was enabling thousands of Jews to vanish? The French police and their Nazi cohorts were baffled, constantly on the lookout for the criminals who were ruining their plans… Little did they know that the Paris Forger was a seventeen-year-old boy who fought the evil empire, the Angel of Death and his own urge to sleep with one simple thought: It’s 30 lives an hour. Adolfo Kaminsky is credited with providing lifesaving documents for an estimated 14,000 Yidden during the Holocaust, with between 1,500 and 3,000 being children. He also provided false documents after the war for Yidden to be able to enter Eretz Yisroel. Adolfo refused to accept compensation for any of his work.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015:

It was a typical Erev Shabbos for most Yidden in France. Some were finishing their workday, others were busy at home completing their Shabbos prep, and of course, there were those who had gone shopping for last-minute items to grace their Shabbos tables. For the unfortunate few who popped into the Hyper Cacher grocery store in East Paris, the day would devolve into madness. While shoppers were busy ringing up their purchases, a heavily armed man burst into the store and demanded the doors be locked. “I am Amedy Coulibaly, Malian and Muslim,” he declared. “I belong to the Islamic State.” Shoppers scattered in all directions, seeking a way to escape, while a few brave Yidden confronted the terrorist, attempting to take him down but having their own lives snuffed out in the process. Lassana Bathily, a loyal worker, rushed a handful of people into the basement where he locked them into the freezer for their own protection. There, the father of a three-year-old and the mother of a onemonth-old baby cuddled their children, trying to keep them warm while praying for a yeshuah. Thankfully, police managed to establish phone communication with one of the shoppers in the freezer and were able to cut the electricity in order to prevent the newborn from succumbing to hypothermia. The hostages hid in that freezer for several hours until, finally, the sounds of explosions and gunfire could be heard above. The terrorist had been neutralized. 76 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

A TRIO OF TERRORISM

Only two days prior to the horrors at Hyper Cacher, brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi had carried out a deadly attack at the office of Parisian newspaper Charlie Hebdo, murdering twelve and injuring eleven. In the days after both of these attacks, it was discovered that the Kouachi brothers and Amedy Coulibaly had planned their attacks together, intending to sow widespread fear over France. Additionally, it was discovered that the Kalashnikov rifles that all three carried, as well as the grenade launcher Coulibaly had, were illegally purchased for less than 5,000 euros — the funding provided by the Kouchi brothers. For several years the French government had been monitoring the siblings, having been tipped off by U.S. intelligence that they’d undergone terrorist training in Yemen. By 2013, however, surveillance of Cherif was suspended as he seemed to be moving away from violent ideology and instead began to dabble in the so-called “victimless crime” of selling counterfeit goods. Surveillance of his brother was dropped the following year. In retrospect, however, authorities kicked themselves for being so foolish:

The knockoff Nikes being sold by Cherif went straight to funding the weapons used in the Hyper Cacher and Charlie Hebdo attacks. ***** For those of us living in the lap of American luxury, it comes as a shock when we learn that those simple street vendors hawking lookalikes of popular brands might just be pawns — or even major players — in an underground world with nefarious intent. Could those copycat goods being sold for a bargain really be financing those who revel in death and destruction? Sadly, the answer is yes. Clear connections have been made in recent years between crime syndicates, street gangs, terrorist organizations and the wide world of fakes. Intellectual property theft, counterfeiting and other forms of fraud are cash cows that provide funds for people and activities we’d all prefer to know nothing about. In a 2003 testimony before Congress, the Secretary General of Interpol announced that the pirating of software and the like is becoming the preferred method of funding for many terrorist organizations. He shared that groups such as the Chechen rebels, Al Qaeda and Hezbollah have been discovered to heavily benefit from counterfeiting. In fact, an Al Qaeda training manual that was discovered explicitly encouraged its members to engage in the selling of counterfeits as a profitable means of funding their activities. For the average shopper, it’s hard to imagine that low-priced fraudulent goods can bring in a pretty penny, but bring in an income they certainly do. Many times, a knockoff can result in more than 2,000 percent profit! With many counterfeit products manufactured in slave labor factories that use child labor or forcibly control workers by locking them into the building with no chance of escape, the cost of production is nearly negligible — meaning that even low prices paid on the street turn hefty profits. But the truth is, it’s not just street corners and back alleys where counterfeit products are sold; many times, they’ll be sold in retail storefronts or at wholesale trade shows. To bring this point home, counterfeit investigator Alistair Gray shared during a presentation that “For a few years, I also used to attend automotive trade shows taking place in huge exhibition spaces, but away from the Ferraris and the Bentleys and the flashing lights, there’d be companies selling fakes: companies with a brochure on the counter and another one underneath, if you ask them the right questions. And they would sell me

fake car parts, faulty fake car parts that have been estimated to cause over 36,000 fatalities... on our roads each year.” With unscrupulous buyers and sellers promoting the proliferation of fakes, the crime of counterfeiting is out of hand. For too many years, law enforcement organizations turned a mostly blind eye to fake-hawkers, not dreaming that knockoff Gucci bags and Prada shoes were part of a chain that fed less-than-benevolent giants with a steady stream of cash. Because of this, the established punishments for selling counterfeit goods rarely serve as deterrents. As Kris Buckner, a licensed private investigator specializing in intellectual property theft, said at the 2005 Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs United States Senate: “For these criminals, it is simply a matter of

78 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

business… They get caught selling counterfeit goods, they get probation.” And when probation is over, they’re right back on the streets, doing it once again. THE LIFEBLOOD OF TERRORISTS

“Do you know who the man in this photograph is?” This question was posed to Lieutenant John Stedman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during a raid on a suspect’s home in which thousands of dollars worth of counterfeit clothing was seized. The lieutenant recounts: “I saw small Hezbollah flags displayed in the suspect’s bedroom. Next to the flags was a photograph of Hassan Nasrallah, whom I recognized as the leader of Hezbollah.” When the lieutenant replied that he did indeed know who the subject of the photo was, the suspect’s wife said, “We love him because he protects us from the Jews.’’ With such ardent (and brainwashed) devotees to various terrorist groups, it comes as no surprise that billions of dollars worth of funding are finding their way overseas to places such as Lebanon, home of Hezbollah. In one outstanding case, a cell of more than 20 Hezbollah agents in Charlotte, North Carolina, was busted by U.S. law enforcement over fraudulent activities that resulted in their sending at least $8 million back to their home base. As President George W. Bush put it: “Money is the lifeblood of terrorist operations.” And money is easily found in counterfeits. While we, as individuals, may not have much power to completely stop the terrorist blood banks from functioning, if we exercise prudence when it comes to purchasing potentially fake products, we just may be able to slow down the trickle of lifeblood, one drop at a time.

My first encounter with a “get-rich-quick” scheme was a chain letter I received while in the sixth grade. The offer sounded positively sweet!

82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

S Send just one pack of stickers to the person at the top of the list, the letter advised, then remove the top name and move everyone up one spot. Now add your name to the bottom of the list. Make six copies and send this letter to six friends. Don’t break the chain! You can receive 1,296 packs of stickers! Minimal investment with massive payout. What’s not to love? But my clever mama cautioned me: Don’t. I doubt she aware that she was protecting me from committing a crime (quite illegal on both state and federal levels). Rather, through life

November 20, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 83 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

experience, she knew to point out that the math was unsustainable. Even if I could possibly believe that one thousand, two hundred and ninety-six girls would play along and bother to send that pack of stickers (what was I planning to do with that many, anyway?), by the time these girls would send it one level further, they would collectively need to reach out to 7,776 participants! Where would they find that many girls? If you still remember your grade school math lessons, in exponents, changing a base of 6 from the 4th to the 5th power, means going from 1,296 (64) to 7,776 (65). If that still seems feasible, let’s try to imagine that the second “generation” after you also attempts to send the letter further. At this point we’re at 6 to the 6th power (or 66), which gives us a grand total of 46,656 — too obviously an impossible number. If the math confuses you, know that you’re not alone — and that it is supposed to.

The real reason these “getrich-quick” schemes are illegal centers on the fact that it preys on the gullible and desperate.

The idea behind these “offers” is to excite the recipient of the letter and not have them look too closely at the details, lest they inevitably recognize the fact that the plan isn’t feasible — and that if it were to continue, the “market” would be completely “saturated” still before their name would get to the top of the list.

GET SMART Market saturation is a common concern for this type of “investment.” But first let’s call this business proposal by its real name. Essentially, a chain letter is a pyramid scheme. One need only study the premise superficially to readily surmise that for this type of “business” to survive, and for the promised “unlimited potential” to be feasible, then this world would need trillions of residents by the time we get to only the 16th level of investors. Never mind that out of the 7.53 billion humans on this planet (give or take), a large percentage cannot afford to participate, or likely don’t even speak a common language. Simple math will tell you that at the 13th level (just the 13th time this same letter is passed on to six people) we’ve already handed this letter twice to all of earth’s residents, language and financial barriers notwithstanding. This, in a nutshell, explains the logistical complications with the concept. Additionally, it helps us understand why even the simplest form of the pyramid scheme, the chain letter, is also illegal. There’s the sad fact that the only ones participating in such schemes are those desperate enough to believe in the dream — and the ones unscrupulous enough to conceive a way to manipulate it for their benefit. Because, if one is so inclined, it is way too easy to change the names on the list to aliases or friends. It is also quite simple to send it to more people in the hopes of statistically more positive results — thus ensuring an even more saturated market. The real reason these “get-rich-quick” schemes are illegal goes beyond their not being viable business plans, and centers on the fact that it preys on the gullible and desperate.

The term “con man” is the shortened version of “confidence man,” wherein a grifter wins the trust or “confidence” of his mark, and thereafter swindles him out of his money. The term was coined for a Samuel Thompson, a crook who was arrested in 1849. Incidentally, Thomspson was rather sloppy at conning people — and was thus quickly caught. Still, he earned the moniker because the public misunderstood a satirical news report written about his crime. The police took to using the apt descriptor for other scammers, and the name stuck.

GET RICH QUICK The best things in life may be free, but the rest of it sure cost a pretty penny. And in the effort to keep their heads above the water, it seems that far too many are searching for the easiest and quickest way to replenish the bank account before the next withdrawal. Most haven’t given up on the idea that they will miraculously strike it truly rich one day. Hey, if that guy was able to, the thinking goes, why can’t I? It is on these hapless souls that con men prey — and they’re gumptious enough to assume they can get away with it. There is much debate whether con artists are sociopaths, who lack the ability to feel empathy. What is readily easy to discern from their selfishness is that they are typically narcissists, with little concern for their victims. The difference between the con artist and sociopath is that the con artist is actually quite adept at recognizing human emotion — and he uses that to his advantage. He doesn’t directly steal from his victims; he doesn’t need to. Instead he wins their confidence by portraying himself as an honest, trustworthy guy, and the mark then willingly hands over his money, confident that the funds are now in safe hands.

GET ON TOP

Not all cons look the same. That would be too easy. There are likely dozens of variations on perpetrating even the typical scams, so they aren’t easily recognizable. The common denominator in all of them is the promise of something for practically nothing — when in reality their intention is to offer nothing for something. They pyramid scheme is rather trans-

parent. Anyone can logically deduce that it won’t work in the long term. In essence, it is designed for the gullible and truly needy — those fortune-less or foolish enough to be taken in. The more clever variant, with a far richer clientele, is the Ponzi scheme. Unlike a pyramid scheme, which explicitly advises its victims that the money will be coming from new “investors,” and thus there’s a benefit to arriving higher up on the ladder, a Ponzi scheme approaches well-to-do marks with a convoluted “too complicated to explain” concept — alongside “proof” that it works. The relatively savvy businessmen, who’d never consider anything as crass as a pyramid scheme, are totally hoodwinked into thinking that they have chanced upon that one-in-a-million investment. If the con man does his job right, he earns the confidence of his victim, and will likely have them see him, the “investment banker,” as a hero. Even once the scam starts to unravel, many have a hard time accepting that their hero might well be the villain, and will instead fault the SEC or other government entity for disrupting their road to affluence.

GETTING TAKEN

The most famous Ponzi scheme that most are familiar with is Bernie Madoff’s massive haul that got him a 150-year prison sentence. What makes this scam more notable than most is the fact that it was the largest ($65 billion) and also longest-running (close to 50 years!) con in history. “If something seems too good to be true,” the adage goes, “it probably is.” The popularity of the maxim notwithstanding, it hasn’t deterred some eager entrepreneurs from investing in a “sure thing.” Despite the mild, or even gnawing concern, they are overwhelmed with the temptation

to place their trust in the promised security. Investments, by their very nature, leave room for error. It all boils down to human nature — both the assumption that someone is clever enough to control all factors, as well as the desire for security.

GETTING NAMED

Charles Ponzi, of the eponymous scheme, understood human nature well. After arriving in the U.S. from Italy in 1903, Ponzi soon found himself in trouble for cheating customers. He disappeared to Canada, where he spent some years in prison for passing a forged check. He soon realized that he’d need to come up with a clever new plan, and quite surprisingly, he did. It wasn’t a scam, not in so many words; this one was more about outsmarting the system — but for the most part, it was quite legal. Ponzi realized that postal coupons could be purchased in one country and then redeemed in another at different values, due to the fluctuation of the dollar. He took to “investing” in this commodity and cashing it out at a profit. The scheme paid off, and he soon realized that he could use that as the “business model” to get others to invest with the promise of huge returns. Only he didn’t quite continue with postage stamps, because much like the fallibility of the pyramid concept, there never would have been enough stamps in the world to support the millions his business supposedly generated! By 1920, he set up shop in Boston, where he managed to recruit investors with the promise of 50 percent returns in mere days (he later sweetened the deal by promising 100 percent profit in 90 days). Investors would hand over their cash, and sure enough, Ponzi would get them the promised return. With money flowing in from the new investors, he managed to pay off the old ones with the new influx of cash. Then things got even better for him. Because so many wanted to reinvest their returns in this wonderful business — in the hopes that their profits would grow ever larger — Ponzi didn’t even need to pay off old investors; he simply advised them of their “profits” in paper statements. With his

The common denominator in all of these schemes is the promise of something for practically nothing — when in reality their intention is to offer nothing for something. charm and smooth reassurances, he was able to placate worried customers and keep the game running. In less than a year, Ponzi raked in nearly $7 million — more than $90 million in today’s currency. For almost two years, he dazzled the public and dumbfounded the authorities. But his downfall came as swiftly as his meteoric rise. It didn’t take long for financial analysts and the Postal Service to determine that the entire business model was a scam (he would have needed to move 160 million postal coupons to match the numbers he seemed to be generating, but there were only 27,000 of said coupons circulating!). Still, many of his trusted investors were so beguiled by him, that while some came clamoring for their money back, many decided to leave their in-

Red Flags: The following three factors should immediate raise your suspicions when introduced to an investment opportunity: • If you are assured that anyone who gets in on the deal will strike it rich within a few months to a year. • If the investor insists that they have a secret, “brilliant” formula that no one else seems to know about. • If the investor pressures you to commit, by either telling you the deal is only available for a short amount of time, that you can get a special discount if you sign up quickly, or that there is a limited amount of slots left.

vested funds in the “business,” fully certain that Ponzi will have their back. Conmanship at its best. Or worst.

GOT GREED?

Ponzi wasn’t the first. Sadly, there have always been some who considered it the height of genius to conceive a way of swindling their neighbors. Even this very play of paying existing investors with fresh deposits, thus creating the illusion of a profit, has existed for centuries before. Formerly known as “robbing Peter to pay Paul,” this was the type of con that our former president Ulysses S. Grant fell victim to in 1884 — and the scam left him penniless.

No, Ponzi wasn’t the first and Madoff wasn’t the last. As recently as this past September, a former NYC teacher was sentenced to two years for a $71 million Ponzi scam. The tragic truth is that as long as human greed exists, there will be people who will be swindled out of their money. Sadly, it is often greed on the part of the victim, too, that has them fall prey. We’d do well to remember that there is no such thing as an easy win. At the beginning of creation, Adam Harishon was told by Hashem that only by the sweat of his brow will he eat his bread. This is the ultimate take-away: there’s no free ride. Now if you’ll send this article to six people, who, in turn, will send it to six people…

he street is bustling, teeming with humanity. Tourists saunter down the sidewalks, taking in the sights, stopping only to inspect the wares — handbags, purses, electronics, jewelry — displayed at open-air stalls and bare-bones storefronts lining the street.

The sound of haggling is heard above the multi-lingual yapping as items exchange hands for puny amounts. Some products look vaguely familiar, inspired by goods of famous brands. (The shoddy workmanship of these cheap designer lookalikes will only become obvious later...) Thrilling bargains for some, but this is not what many are after. They’re looking for the real deals — reals that are, in fact, fake too. Suddenly there’s a whisper in a tourist’s ear. Gucci, Prada, Chanel? Louis Vuitton? An almost imperceptible nod from the tourist and silently, surreptitiously, pretending he had never spoken, the whisperer heads down the street in a steady clip, the picture of nonchalance as he signals for the potential customer to keep pace. Mid-stride, he stops and slinks into a back alley, or descends a murky staircase, or punches in the alarm code to access a hidden back room, or even yanks a car door open, into which the tourist is summoned.

From under a ratty blanket or dark shopping bags emerge Rolex watches, designer handbags and purses bearing logos and trademarks — replicas of actual designer wear. In a car, the tinted windows hide the activity as the vehicle slowly cruises down the streets, negotiations ringing loud. In hidden rooms, the dealer remains on the phone — in contact with his partner manning the storefront — his ear cocked to hear if there is anyone on their trail, as the customer, fingering the leather (plastic?), is hurried along. In the dark alley, a vendor holds a brochure under her cascading pashmina, while keeping a tense eye trained on the street. They have reason to fear. The police are after them.

KNOCKOFF OR COUNTERFEIT? In the open, the gray market flourishes. While nothing about their activities is completely legal, they’re left to operate. Many of these gray goods are so cheap both because the materials are inferior, and also because unauthorized sales and illegal entry to the country cut out tax and regular import fees. These goods, out in plain sight, are knockoffs — imitation products inspired by the models of original designer merchandise, but obviously enough not the real thing. And in the hidden crevices, the black market booms. There’s a reason they’re so well concealed, why vendors close up shop and flee with their portable stalls in the midst of a deal... Because as opposed to knockoffs that are obviously fake, these are counterfeits, exact replicas (or sincere attempts thereof). Their quality is more often than not greatly compromised, but they bear illegally copied trademarks, logos and designs. Besides the many street sites where one can purchase a fake, with the uptick of e-commerce — and the anonymity, the evasiveness and the global reach it provides — cyberspace is teeming with illegit sell-

ers, at this point accounting for 70 percent of counterfeit goods sales. Shocking indeed — to those who’ve never heard of AliExpress, that is.

THE MAKE OF A FAKE

It comes as no surprise that the breeding ground for counterfeit production is China, who according the The Counterfeit Report, produces 80 percent of the world’s fakes. And who are the takers? Embarrassingly enough, our country. The United States purchases about 60 to 80 percent of these products. There are different ways counterfeiters copy the original products, and these are reflected in how convincing the counterfeit is. If it’s a fake that really stumps the consumers — and even experts — by smelling the smell, looking the look, and behaving just like the brand product, we must concede to the theory of third-shift counterfeiting, also known as factory extras. While this phenomenon definitely exists to some extent, designers claim that they are very rare. Perhaps because indeed it is so, and counterfeiters are just selling the tale so that people should grab their goods — or perhaps because brands want to gloss over the fact that their Asian partners may be a lot less than scrupulous. Extensive research was done on the topic of yuandan, as these black market luxury goods are known in China. Once the morning and afternoon shifts are over, is what was concluded about a decade ago, factory workers remain and run another shift through the night, using the same patterns either with extra factory materials or with their own substitutes (which obviously affect the quality). Workers then sell these products clandestinely for a fraction of the price of the real deal. Much more common than merchandise actually

manufactured in the factories are fakes that are copied off one sample. In those cases, counterfeiters get hold of a designer product and take it apart to use as a guide from which they copy the design and pattern. The resulting high-quality merchandise can almost pass as the real thing. In 2012, nine members of a smuggling ring in New York were discovered purchasing authentic designer merchandise, and then shipping those “samples” to a counterfeiter in China. In the three years until they were caught, they had imported more than $300 million worth of counterfeit goods, and then, with the profits, splurged on real designer goods for themselves. Then there are those fakes that are obviously not real, but thrilling for some just the same. These are often copied off a picture and have a similar look, but the fit, quality, coloring and bounce will be totally off. In China, yuandan items are ranked with five levels: 1:1, Super A, A, B and C. Super A and A products are very convincing imitations, but still distinguishable to the trained eye. The 1:1 products are so real-looking

UNREAL BARGAINS There are hotbeds of counterfeit business dotting the globe. Canal Street’s Chinatown in Manhattan is one famous fake market. In California it is the Santee Alley fashion district in LA where those seeking knockoffs head to. In Shenzhen, China, the five-story fake market, the Luohu Commercial Center, has a lot of undercover business, despite the signs all over, hung by the police, warning of theft of intellectual property. Feria de Bellcaire, Barcelona’s flea market, is full of tables laden with ware of questionable origins. London, Paris… each corner of the globe has its notorious fake street.

BREAKING THE FAKING

EFFECT ON ECONOMY American businesses and industries lose out billions in revenue when counterfeit goods are purchased. Many of these items are not taxed, which also affects our government. Finally, designer companies lose out on billions of dollars invested in production and marketing due to the dealings of unscrupulous companies. S O U R C E : C B P. G O V

Our country’s first line of defense for imports weeds out a lot of counterfeit goods being smuggled into the country. Year by year, the Customs and Border Protection seizes all kinds of counterfeit products heading to the U.S. for retail sale. However, smugglers can be clever, declaring entire containers as innocuous items (coat hangers, picture frames), and many products do worm their way in. Online purchases pose a whole different inspection challenge, since goods very often get delivered straight to costumers’ doors with small parcel mail. At official black market locations, police have cracked down on counterfeit sales in the last decade and a half, making vendors quake in their boots, even as they continue their nefarious work. In 2008, the Bloomberg administration clamped down on Canal Street counterfeits, raiding 32 stores and confiscating over $1 million worth of Coach bags, Oakley sunglasses and Rolex watches, and arresting 967 (!) people for trademark counterfeiting. Arrests and seizures are still regularly made, and a definite decline is being seen in NYC. In Los Angeles, Santee Alley was once a thriving counterfeit industry, with the fashion district being notorious for the place where one could buy the best knockoffs and fakes in the country. Today, now that police have established their presence in the market, closing up counterfeit enterprises and seizing mil-

The short answer from a moral standpoint is obviously no. But is it illegal? In the U.S., federal law protecting trademarks makes it illegal to knowingly traffic counterfeit goods. As of now, though, the Department of Justice doesn’t prohibit an individual from purchasing counterfeit products for personal use. There is a proposed bill in New York, which if passed, will cost a fake-seeker $1,000 or even jail time if caught purchasing a fake designer product. It hasn’t passed since its proposal some seven years ago, but it might go into effect at one point. So while no one will be breaking a law by walking around with a designer-looking handbag, it just doesn’t feel right to knowingly do so. To paraphrase the Customs and Border Protection, if it seems like a steal, well, it is one.

THE FACTS ON FAKES • According to Forbes, counterfeiting was the largest criminal enterprise in the world in 2018. • Canal Street became a destination in the ‘80s. First to be sold in Chinatown were Rolexes, then Swiss army knives, and in about 2000, Chinatown became the ultimate destination for knockoff and counterfeit bags and purses. • Some brand companies have produced items making fun of counterfeiters. Gucci has joined the fake fight both with the manufacture of items bearing the words “Real Gucci” and also with a line in which they spelled their brand “Guccy.” Dolce & Gabbana released a leather pouch with studs and crystals emblazoned with the words “This is a D&G Fake Bag” — and they charge over $2,000 for it! • Nike is the most counterfeited brand globally, and Rayban, Rolex, Supreme and Louis Vuitton are most commonly copied for knock-offs. • Thailand actually has a museum of counterfeit goods, showcasing an accumulation of more than 4,000 counterfeit goods to raise awareness of the topic.

The paper the Federal Reserve uses to print bills is made of one-quarter linen and three-quarters cotton, and has red and blue security fibers running through it. This paper, along with its raised ink printing, gives U.S. currency its trademark texture.

Have you ever wondered why $1 bills and $2 bills have remained the same since 1963 and 1976, respectively, while larger denominations have already seen several redesigns? The reason is simple: The government updates the design of Federal Reserve notes in order to deter counterfeiters, and since the $1 and $2 bills are rarely counterfeited (simply because it’s not worth the effort), introducing new designs aren’t necessary. Additionally, in regard to $1 bills only, Section 117 of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, 2019, reads: This section bars Treasury or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from using funds to redesign the $1 Federal Reserve note. And if there’s no money, then there most definitely is no change…

U.S. bills of currency were first issued as Legal Tender Notes in 1861 or 1862. Until 1928, the bills were of much larger size than today’s greenbacks, measuring at approximately 7.4218 by 3.125 inches.

THE $1 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 5.8 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $12.1 billion

The very first $1 bill was issued in 1862 and featured a portrait of Salmon P. Chase, who served as the Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln, on the obverse (top) side of the bill. In 1869, the bill was redesigned and began featuring the familiar image of George Washington. Later designs featured Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant, but eventually, President Washington found his way back to the bill and has remained there ever since. The portrait of George Washington found on today’s bills is based on the Athenaeum Portrait, which was

THE $2 BILL

Value in Circulation (in 2017): $2.4 billion

painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796 when President Washington was 65 years old. Looking at the image, one can clearly see that the engraving used to produce the $1 bill used this painting as the model, though it’s seen as its mirror image. Oddly, while the portrait remained unfinished, it is still considered Stuart’s most notable work! Stuart, instead of completing the painting and delivering it to Washington, used the portrait as a model for many more replicas, which he sold to buyers who were eager to purchase a portrait of the most famous man in the country. After Washington died, Stuart painted 130 copies of the painting, which he called his “hundred dollar bill” for the price he charged for those paintings. Today, 60 of these copies are still in existence.

The first $2 bill featured a portrait of Alexander Hamilton, though it’s not the same image as the one we’re familiar with from today’s $10 bill. Like all notes, this bill also underwent many design changes. Thomas Jefferson’s portrait has been on the $2 bill since 1928, and when the bill was redesigned in 1976 — the bicentennial of the United States — it was decided that the reverse would feature an engraved rendition of the Declaration of Independence painting by John Trumball in honor of this special year. It is interesting to note that while the original painting showed a scene including 47 men, only 42 men fit onto the $2 bill, so five unlucky fellows fell off the note…

THE $5 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 5.5 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $14.8 billion

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the $5 bill was sometimes referred to as a “fin.” It is widely assumed that this nickname has roots in Yiddish/ German, and we can certainly imagine Jewish greenhorns referring to a $5 note as a “finiver”!

Great Seal immediately to the right of Lincoln, the letters USA can be found between the columns, and the words E PLURIBUS UNUM (or “Out of many [states], one [country]”) can be found along the top.

Today’s bills of $5 and higher include many security features to prevent counterfeiting. On the $5 bill, there are two watermarks. The first is a large numeral 5, placed to the right of President Lincoln’s portrait, near the end of the bill, and the second is a column of three 5s, which can be found to the left of the portrait. The second feature is a security thread found to the right of the portrait. When held up to the light, one can read the alternating pattern of the letters USA and the numeral 5. When held under UV light, this security thread glows blue. Microprinting is a third technique used to ward off counterfeiters. On the $5 bill, the words FIVE DOLLARS appear inside each teardrop-shaped loop on the right and left borders of the obverse of the bill, and the words USA FIVE can be found along the edge of the large numeral five on the reverse of the bill. Finally, in the shield of the

104 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 20, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

The reverse of the bill also has two strips that get blanked out when viewed in the infrared spectrum (see image, taken with an infrared camera). Finally, and most fascinating, perhaps, is the “EURion constellation,” or pattern of yellow zeroes formed from the scattered 05s on the bill. (This pattern, which can also appear as orange or green, also appears on other bills of currency, both in the U.S. and otherwise.) Color photocopy machines are programmed to recognize this pattern and refrain from making copies, and some machines even make a record of illegal photocopying attempts, which repair techs may eventually find and report to law enforcement.

THE $10 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 4.5 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $19.6 billion

The portrait of Hamilton on the $10 bill is based on another John Trumbull masterpiece, and is the only portrait used on U.S. currency that has its figure facing left.

Today’s $20 bill also boasts the security features of the $5 and $10 bills, with its security thread glowing green under UV light. Look out for the microprinting in the blue letters that read USA TWENTY to the right of the portrait, and the words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 20 USA 20 USA that appear to the immediate left of the portrait, at the very bottom border of the bill.

THE $20 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 7.9 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $183.8 billion

The security features on the $10 bill are similar to those on the $5 bill and include: a watermark of Hamilton to the right of the center portrait; a security thread that glows orange under UV light; microprinting of USA 10 under the large red torch, as well as the words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN TEN DOLLARS below Hamilton’s portrait and inside the left and right borders (where it’s followed by USA); a bunch of small yellow numeral 10s whose zeroes create the EURion constellation; and an area that gets blanked out in infrared light. The $10 bill also has a colorshifting numeral 10 at the bottom right corner of the obverse of the bill.

November 20, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 105 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

THE $50 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 8.5 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $86.4 billion

The $50 bill also contains all of the aforementioned security features, including a security thread that glows yellow under UV light. Microprinting includes the word FIFTY in the right and left borders on the obverse of the bill, the words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in Grant’s collar, and FIFTY USA 50 inside two of the blue stars to the left of the portrait. In 2005, and again in 2010, proposals were put forward to honor Ronald Reagan by having the $50 bill feature the great president, but both times, the proposals remained just that.

THE $100 BILL

Estimated Lifespan: 15 years Value in Circulation (in 2017): $1.25 trillion

The $100 bill, or Franklin, as it’s often called, also features the security measures of the other bills. The security thread glows pink under UV light, and can you find the microscopic printing?

Look out for tiny print on Benjamin Franklin’s jacket collar, around the space containing the watermark, along the golden quill and in the bill’s borders on the reverse of the bill. This bill also features additional anti-counterfeiting designs, including a disappearing bell in the inkwell, raised printing on Franklin’s shoulder on the left side of the note, and a cool 3-D strip that shows either the number 100 or a bell, depending on how the bill is tilted. Tilt the bill side to side, and watch the images slide up and down, and tilt the note up and down, and watch the images slide from side to side!

WHAT IS AN AYIN HORAH?

T

hink about sound waves. Light waves. Emotions. These phenomena are not tangible, and often hard to understand. But, they most definitely impact our world.

Same goes for Ayin Horah. It’s abstract and often difficult to understand, but it has far reaching effects. Essentially, An Ayin Horah is the power Hashem has given to the eyes to effect change simply by looking.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS: Emotions affect the mechanism of the human body. Think fear and a racing heart. Think anger and a red face. Jealousy too, works changes in the body. It produces a spiritual poison which eventually gets released through the eyes and harms the subject of the jealousy. This, in effect, is an Ayin Horah.

WHY BECOME AN EINY YESHUAH MEMBER? BE VIGILANT We will keep checking your name’s for an Ayin Horah frequently

BE PROTECTED If an Ayin Horah is found? We will remove it using proven methods
