24 years ago, TTI became the trendsetter in creating kosher and rabbinically approved pathways to parnassah opportunities in our community. Ever since, we have been at the forefront of creating original and innovative degree options for men and women. The goal has always been to limit exposure to secular ideas and culture while earning the credentials needed to excel in the chosen field.

Today, TTI introduces a new degree to men and women living in the State of New York. With an unprecedented low tuition, a straightforward process, and training that meets all state requirements, this degree leads to solid job opportunities.

TAPPING INTO THE KEDUSHA ALL WEEK (Re: Shabbos, I’m Waiting for You, Issue 12) You were zoche to write such a special article that touched our hearts; it was so inspiring to read an article on something we’ve been working on over the past while. Our children (mostly teenagers) would like to share a few beautiful ideas of enhancing our level of connection with kedushas Shabbos. Throughout the week, we keep a daily cheshbon of “zachor es yom haShabbos l’kadsho,” doing at least one thing in preparation for Shabbos each day: opening a bottle of grape juice, shopping groceries for Shabbos, baking, ironing, etc. Finally, we are completely ready and waiting to greet the Shabbos Queen five to ten minutes before hadlakos neiros, and in those minutes, we sit together and read something inspirational, like Toras Avigdor for kids. Then, everyone takes on a small kabbalah to go a little bit out of their comfort zone for kedushas Shabbos. Here are some examples: wearing a dress instead of a robe; wearing Shabbos shoes instead of Crocs; greeting others with a “gut Shabbos” instead of “hello” and “goodbye”; and listening to zemiros instead of talking during the seudah. Right after we usher in Shabbos Kodesh, the teens in our neighborhood gather in one home, where we sing Kabbalas Shabbos together, followed by dancing and the singing of heartwarming Shabbos songs. We are currently putting the final touches to a beautiful Seder Kabbalos Shabbos booklet we have put together, which will include davening and songs and will be available shortly. We will gladly share the inspiration. You can reach us at 845-425-3781 or 845-426-6551. Two Grateful Mothers

LEAVE BAKING FOR LAST (Re: Shabbos, I’m Waiting for You, Issue 12) I enjoyed reading about getting ready for Shabbos all week long.

Kudos to the mother who can allow fifteen or so little neighbors into her house so close to Shabbos! I have one comment on the article that I’d like to bring attention to: I always knew that there is an inyan to bake challos specifically on Friday. When I told my husband about the topic of this week’s issue, he told me that it’s not just an “inyan”; in Shulchan Aruch it actually says that one should wash his clothing on Thursday so as not to be busy with it on Friday, to allow time for challah baking, which ideally should be done on Friday. I must confess that it’s not a hard and fast rule in my house, but when I do bake on Friday, the aroma and taste enhance the Shabbos experience as nothing else in the world can. Shira Weiss

LITTLE HELPING HANDS (Re: Shabbos Is Coming Early!, Issue 12) The Erev Shabbos Helper chart was a hit in my home! We hung it on the fridge and had lots of little helpers, taking great ideas from the chart and from the chore list for specific ages! It was especially helpful since we still look like the “before” picture, with cries for help echoing across our home as the zman looms closer, begging for all able-bodied forces to help us get to Shabbos on time. After being inspired by the article, though, we hope that in the future, Erev Shabbos will start to look like it does in this very amazing writer’s home! Mother of Helpers

TIMELY INSPIRATION (Re: FYI: Challah Bits, Issue 12) Your article on challah facts was really sweet. Especially inspirational were the quotes you included from tzaddikim about the chashivus of baking challah. I approached this task so differently this week! The inspirational reminder of what a special mitzvah challah baking is made it a labor of love and of awe. M.S.

HAPPILY MUNCHING (Re: Friday Night Munchies, Issue 12) Last week, as soon as I caught sight of your Friday Night Munchies, I whipped out a pan, a few basic ingredients, and within a few minutes, had a container full of Chocolate Corn Clusters waiting for Shabbos. The results were fantastic! Many thanks from the entire family. E.S.

LOOKING UP (Re: ‫מיטגעמאכט‬, Issue 09) I was very excited — and, yes, touched — as I read a recent installment of the Yiddish serial. Since we are also blessed with a child with Down syndrome, reading Mr. C.’s story brought back some poignant memories. I would like to add that parenting a child with Down syndrome does not have to change “many things” in the family. Baruch Hashem, we accepted our child naturally, despite her suffering from other medical issues in addition to Down syndrome, and caring for her is exactly like caring for any of our beloved children. And that is how her siblings accepted it. No highlighted issues meant no issues noticed, and baruch Hashem, our other children, tot to teen, regard her naturally as part of the family. They love her and she loves them all! In regard to the child misbehaving in the house: It is important to remember that there are all sorts of children, with or without a diagnosis. Some children are active and disruptive, while others are calmer and more laid back. There is one thing children (and adults) with Down syndrome have in common, and that is a lechtig’keit that comes along with a happy, selfless attitude, and this radiates to all around them. I thank Hashem for giving us the zechiyah to raise this child who brings such bracha into our home, and I ask Him that we should be zoche to raise all of our kinderlach gezunterheit l’Shem Shamayim! E.H.

PA RS H A S VAY I S H L AC H In Parshas Vayishlach, Yaakov prepared for the encounter with Eisav, who was approaching with an army of 400 men. Yaakov divided his camp and arranged the order so that the women and children went last, farthest from harm. Yosef stood in front of Rochel to shield her from Eisav’s eyes, and Yaakov placed Dinah in a box and locked it, lest Eisav see her and desire to marry her. A question arises: While it is understandable that Yaakov would place Dinah into a box to shield her from Eisav’s gaze, why did he have to lock the box? Rabbi Leeor Dahan notes that the Sefer Chassidim indicates that while Yaakov’s motive in placing Dinah into the box was to hide her from Eisav, the reason he locked the box was to prevent Dinah from escaping to go marry Eisav. Dinah did indeed wish to marry, confident that she could bring out the good in Eisav. There is support for the idea that Dinah could have brought out the good in Eisav. For one thing, Eisav was open to change at that moment, as it says,

“Thereupon, he said, ‘Travel and we will go, and I will go alongside you’ (Bereishis 33:12). Rabbi Dahan adds that the Baalei Tosfos state that when Eisav said he would go alongside Yaakov, he meant that he was willing to go alongside Yaakov in the paths of Torah, and he was truly sincere — but Yaakov did not trust him. Yaakov also did not trust in Dinah’s ability to bring out Eisav’s good side — and Eisav did indeed have a good side. In fact, Eisav had greater potential than Yaakov. According to the Zohar HaKadosh (Vayeitzei 137b), Eisav’s neshamah came from a higher source than Yaakov’s, but forces of evil clung to his neshamah as it came into the world. The Biala Rebbe, shlita, states that Eisav could have been brought close to Hashem, but whereas the influence of the Avos was not enough to return Eisav to the good side, Dinah could have succeeded. By locking her into a box, Yaakov prevented this. By blocking the only possible means for Eisav’s redemption, Yaakov inadvertently sentenced Eisav’s neshamah to spiritual death. Along these lines, the Midrash compares Yaakov’s escape to Charan to be like the escape of accidental murderers to one of the arei miklat (Midrash Tanchuma, Parshas Vayeitzei). The Sfas Emes explains that by not working to bring Eisav close to Hashem, Yaakov “murdered Eisav. The “murder was accidental

The message for women is clear: Do not doubt in your ability to coax greatness out of your husband.

because Yaakov was an anav who did not believe himself capable of this task. Was there really no other salvation for Eisav besides Dinah? The Biala Rebbe, shlita, derives from a Midrash that even Avraham Avinu himself would not have succeeded in bringing Eisav close to Hashem. The Midrash says that Avraham was taken from this world five years early to spare him the pain of seeing the wicked ways of his grandson Eisav (Rashi on Bereishis 25:7).

Logically, the Biala Rebbe concludes that if Eisav would have continued to be a rasha during Avraham’s lifetime, then we see that even the tremendous influence of Avraham Avinu would not have been enough to save Eisav. The Biala Rebbe asks how Yaakov could have been expected to save Eisav if even Avraham Avinu would not have succeeded. The answer is that Yaakov could have allowed Eisav to marry Dinah, the only one with the power to influence Eisav. Rashi notes this power as well, when he states, “Yaakov was punished for withholding her from his brother — perhaps she would cause him to improve his ways…” (Rashi on Bereishis 32:23, citing Bereishis Rabbah 75:9) We know Leah was softeyed from crying that she not marry Eisav, as was her original destiny. Her tefillos succeeded, and she married Yaakov. When the Torah introduced Dinah as Dinah the daughter of Leah, as opposed to the daughter of Yaakov, Rashi comments, “Like mother, like daughter.” Indeed, when Leah married Yaakov, her status of being the one destined for Eisav was passed down to her daughter Dinah. The Biala Rebbe concludes that we learn a powerful lesson from this parsha on the tremendous influence a woman can have on her husband, for what had been impossible for the Avos was within Dinah’s power. The message for women is clear: Do not doubt in your ability to coax greatness out of your husband. A good wife can enable her husband to grow in Torah and yiras Shamayim. We must look for the good, knowing it is there, and thus we can succeed.

State Attorney General Calls Out Orange County Town for Anti-Semitism Just days after Governor Andrew Cuomo cited antiSemitic sentiments as he vetoed proposed legislation that would have prevented the construction of an upstate housing development, New York State Attorney General Letitia James has jumped into the fray, filing a motion supporting a local developer’s federal lawsuit accusing Orange County and the Town of Chester of religious discrimination. The Middletown Times Herald-Record reported that James filed her motion in the U.S. Southern District Court in New York on December 5. The legal action names numerous defendants including Chester’s building inspector, supervisor and three town board members; a former town supervisor; the town; County Executive Steve Neuhaus; and Orange County. It also includes a timeline of events regarding the 431-home Greens at Chester development, which according to James, has a displayed policy of preventing chasidic families from buying homes or living in the community, a direct violation of federal law. In a statement released by James, the attorney general slammed the defendants for actions that she described as “flat-out discriminatory.” “This campaign to deny housing to members of the Jewish community is not only a clear violation of our laws, but it is antithetical to our basic values and blatantly anti-Semitic,” said James. “New York has a long standing commitment to ensure equal housing opportunities for all residents — regardless of race, gender or religious identity — and we will ensure this commitment is upheld.” Orange County attorney Langdon Chapman protested the action by James and the federal lawsuit, calling it without merit. Officials in nearby Kiryas Joel applauded James for her efforts. “This is not the first time that elected officials in Orange County and the municipalities that surround us have engaged in discriminatory and exclusionary actions, with the sole purpose of preventing the growth of the chasidic community,” said village administrator Gedalye Szegedin. “This pattern is part of a concerted effort to use laws, county

permits and frivolous lawsuits to delay and deny chasidic families from having quality and affordable housing.” Rabbi David Niederman, president of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg, commended James for her intervention, saying, “Today’s action sends a powerful message that Orthodox Jews are also protected under the Fair Housing laws and discriminatory actions will not be tolerated.”

Port Authority Carpool Discounts to Disappear Next Month The implementation of cashless tolling, designed to make commutes through toll booths faster while reducing traffic and pollution, is about to hit the wallets of drivers who use the George Washington Bridge and the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. In an announcement made last week by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a carpool discount that was available to E-Z Pass subscribers with three or more occupants in their vehicle will be eliminated on January 5, 2020. The discount, which had already been phased out at the Bayonne Bridge in February 2017 and the Outerbridge and Goethals bridges earlier this year, reduced the toll from $12.50 during peak hours and $10.50 during off peak hours to $6.50. According to the Fort Lee Patch, the Port Authority has said that the carpool discount isn’t viable in locations with cashless tolls, because the system’s cameras cannot verify that the car actually has the minimum

THE NEW three occupants that are required to enjoy the savings. But local officials have argued that point, saying that California, Massachusetts and Georgia have been able to preserve their carpool discounts even after implementing cashless tolls. Calculating that the move will cost local residents an additional $2,125 in tolls each year, New Jersey Congressmen Josh Gottheimer and Bill Pascrell Jr. wrote a letter to Port Authority chairman Kevin O’Toole, calling on the Port Authority to rethink the move. “We oppose any effort that will force New Jersey drivers to carry the burden of yet another costly toll hike, and one that will weigh entirely on the pocketbooks of commuters, make traffic worse, and contribute to further damage of our • Free Nutritional Consultation already-fragile environment,” wrote the congressman. • Free Quick Delivery News at the GWB will be only going from NoonMinimum bad to worse January 5, when a toll hike approved in September goes into effect. CHA P T ER THIRT EEN

Recap: Miri is very concerned when she can’t reach her mother for days on end; Elisheva invites her over to hear the entire amazing story of what is going on in their family. Menachem Auerbach, who runs a money gemach, hears from his wife and daughter how Potolsky, who just borrowed some money before their daughter’s wedding, was buying a topof-the-line wedding gown, as well as a seemingly pricey apartment right in Bnei Brak. Bratislava 5708/1948

Ulush Cohen was wiping the small kitchen table when she heard her husband’s footsteps outside, accompanied by another set of footsteps. She quickly opened the pantry to see if they had enough ingredients for lunch. When she heard the knock, she closed the pantry and hurried to the door. “Welcome,” she said, and then moved aside. Janek walked in with two guests; she knew them already from previous visits. He saw the look of distress in her eyes as she glanced at the pantry, and quickly murmured, “They won’t be eating lunch with us.” “I can run down to the store,” Ulush replied quietly. “No, no,” Janek said. “This is really a short meeting relating to something we’d rather not discuss in the office.” “I understand.” She went back to the kitchen and her wet rag, glancing over her shoulder. From the doorway she had a view into the living room and could see the edge of the floral armchair, as well as the first section of the dining room table. Someone was sitting on the chair, and an ashtray had been put on the table. “It’s two days already…”

“The lists are closed….” “…Cooperating nicely.” “Another child…” Ulush tugged at her kerchief, opened the window to try and ward off the cigarette smoke that would inevitably waft in very soon, and took a few potatoes out of the pantry. Her husband didn’t share information about his activities and various smuggling operations, and it was better that way. He explained to her that this way, both of them were safer. But now things sounded really serious. They’d never come here to plan their next operation. She passed a hand over her forehead as she thought about the certificates that had been promised to them but had not yet materialized. She wanted to leave. She was afraid for Janek. It wasn’t that she was paranoid by nature, but it looked to her like he was taking too many risks lately. She saw him coming home in the middle of the night, dirty, sweating, exhausted and pale, and sometimes literally trembling, but he always smiled. And when she’d ask, “How was it?” he would say only, “Baruch Hashem, it ended successfully.” A chair suddenly scraped back, and Janek entered the kitchen. Ulush shuddered, as if

afraid that she had uttered her thoughts and questions aloud, and he had come in to try to answer them. “This time we need your help, Ulush,” he whispered. “Can you close the window?” “My help?” She quickly pulled the shutters closed. “Yes. It seems that there are two children who need to be smuggled out of an institution here in the city. Tonight. We need a woman to take the younger one. A woman with a child will arouse less suspicion than a man with a child.” “Yes,” she said, focused. “Emil got a job at the place; he’s been working there for five days already.” “Where is it?” “An orphanage in the eastern part of the city. It used to be something officially Catholic; today they’ve lowered their profile a bit.” He leaned onto a chair. “It’s not supposed to be dangerous,” he said. “Emil will bring the child out, and you will continue on with him, as though you are his mother and the two of you are taking an evening walk together.” She nodded, wide-eyed. “And if they chase us?” “I don’t think anyone will chase you. Emil is the only adult there during those hours. One of our cars will be waiting at the corner.” The car wasn’t part of the original plan, but he had added it of his own accord, this very minute. While it was true that in theory Emil was watching the children during those hours, what would happen if the assistant director, who was so overprotective of his charges, happened to be out, and he would meet Ulush and recognize the child with her? She couldn’t be put in such danger. Ulush wasn’t all that brave, but she wasn’t a coward either. “Fine,” she said, and took the knife to cut the first potato. “I think I’m ready.” “I’ll give you clearer instructions later, but that’s the plan in general terms.” He was about to go back to his friends in the living room, but then he turned back to her. “If someone catches you, say that you found the child in the street and that you’re looking for whom he belongs to. He is also being told to say that he went out by himself for a walk and that no one sent him specifically to you.” She smiled. “Fine,” she said. “It will all work out, b’ezras Hashem.” “YOU WILL GO to a place with a lot of candies,” Emil said, as he leaned onto the row of faucets that protruded from the metal pole running along the wall. He brushed the child’s wet hair out of his eyes. “The gate will be open, and you’ll just walk past. A nice lady will wait for you outside, and she’ll take you to a good place, a better place than this.” Around them, the children were running around boisterously and throwing towels at one another. It was so noisy that Emil and Edo could converse easily without being heard. “And if someone catches you in the courtyard or on the street, what will you tell him?”

“That I’m going to look for candies, because I want some,” the boy replied obediently. “Very good. It’s like I didn’t tell you to go.” “And Gustav?” the little boy asked, wiping his face with a towel. “Will he also come with me?” “No.” Emil searched with his eyes for Gustav, the eight-year-old whom he had just gotten to know two days ago, but whose trust he had already acquired. It was a miracle that it was so easy to get these children to trust him; with Gustav, it seemed that he had been waiting all these years for something just like this to happen, for someone to come and take him from this place, “to my mother,” as he said. “Umm...” Emil had stammered, not wanting to shatter his dream. They didn’t talk about the subject again; they only spoke quietly about leaving. Gustav was the one who had told him about Edo, the second Jewish boy in the orphanage, and a quick visit to the locked office during the evening hours affirmed the story. There were two Jewish children here. Two children without a name or identity. The only details recorded about them were their approximate age upon arrival, the date, and the names that Theodore Heinke, the deputy director, had given them. Edo was also easy to persuade, because of his young age, but Emil had only approached him this evening, due to the risk that he would blurt something out to someone who wasn’t involved in the rescue. “Gustav is also going, but not with you. You’ll meet later on.” “He was the one who told you that it’s a good idea to take me along, right?” “Right.” “So why won’t he come with me?” “Because the nice lady can’t take two children into the street with her.” “Oh.” Edo mulled this over and then added, “When will I go?” “I’ll tell you when. You lie down nicely in bed, but don’t fall asleep. I’ll come in like I always do to tell everyone goodnight, and then I’ll talk to you.” “And I shouldn’t tell anyone, right?” “Right. You’re a very smart boy.” Emil smiled, and then he abruptly raised his voice. “Max and Berno, what are you doing over there? Do you know that you have to be in bed in five minutes? Pick up the towel, Max, because if it gets wet, you’ll have to be up early to wash it yourself, along with some other towels, you hear?” He patted the boy on the shoulder and sent him toward the door of the washing room. “In five minutes I’ll be starting to walk through the rooms, my friends.” He clapped his hands. “Anyone who wants to miss the last chapter of my suspense story should make sure not to be in bed by then.” And he sincerely hoped that the last chapter of his suspense story would have a very happy ending indeed. To be continued...

Harris Withdraws From Race THE PULSE: California Senator Kamala Harris an-

nounced that she is suspending her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. When she initially announced her candidacy, Harris was considered a top-tier contender with a legitimate chance at winning the nomination. Harris’s campaign ran into strong headwinds over her prosecutorial record as San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General. As a state prosecutor, she championed legislation that would allow the criminal prosecution of parents of habitually truant children. Many felt that such

78 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

a policy would disproportionately affect low-income people of color. She also took a strong stance on upholding convictions based on dubious evidence. Such positions did not resonate well with Democratic primary voters. Additionally, she obfuscated her position on healthcare. She initially supported eliminating private health insurance and then backtracked and reversed her stance. Her policy positions were not thoroughly developed. Her campaign also suffered from disorganization and mismanagement. On December 3, she ended her campaign by announcing to her supporters that “My campaign for president simply doesn’t have the financial resources we need to continue.” THE IMPACT: The withdrawal of Harris, who is a

woman of color, leaves the pool of leading Democratic

contenders with an all-white slate of candidates. The Democratic Party, which prides itself on its ethnic diversity, will now be fielding an ethnically homogeneous group at its upcoming debate. Senator Cory Booker is attempting to capitalize on Harris’s withdrawal by presenting himself as the ethnically diverse candidate of the Democratic field. In the days following Harris’s departure, Booker raised over $1 million in new donations. Seeking to capitalize on his newfound popularity, Booker criticized the 2020 presidential field as having “more billionaires” than “black people.” However, Booker is not the only non-white Democratic candidate. Andrew Yang, Tulsi Gabbard, Deval Patrick and Julian Castro are all ethnic minorities, but none have qualified for the upcoming Democratic debate.

Biden Criticizes Netanyahu and Rips the Palestinian Authority THE PULSE: At a campaign event in Oelwein, Iowa,

Joe Biden once again criticized Bernie Sanders for threatening to leverage aid to Israel for concessions to the Palestinian Authority. Biden called Sanders’s plan “bizarre” and wrong. He also minced no words in criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He cast Netanyahu as an “extreme right leader” and described his actions and recent comments regarding possible West Bank annexations as “counterproductive” and unhelpful for peace. However, Biden saved his most scathing criticism for the Palestinian Authority. He essentially blamed them for the collapse of peace talks brokered by the Obama administration. He said that the Palestinians could have gotten 98 percent of what they wanted, but refused to accept Israel as a Jewish state even though they could have attained independent statehood. He said that he is “tired of everybody giving the Palestinian Authority a pass… as if they’re not continuing to foment all of this.” THE IMPACT: Biden’s comments highlight a differ-

ence of policy between the current Trump administration and a possible Biden administration. The Trump

administration has been unabashedly pro-Netanyahu and has wholeheartedly supported the right-wing policies of Netanyahu and his Likud-led government. Netanyahu has referred to Trump as the most pro-Israel president ever. Biden’s position is more nuanced. Biden has a strong pro-Israel record and has even referred to himself as a Zionist. He is a firm supporter of military aid to Israel and vociferously defends Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. However, Biden is a firm believer that peace will only be attained when the Palestinian issue is appropriately resolved. He is firmly committed to the idea of a two-state solution. Biden is willing to call out the Palestinian Authority and cast blame on where it belongs. Still, he will also call out Netanyahu and the Israeli government over actions that he believes undermine the cause of peace and the region’s long-term security and stability.

November Blockbuster Jobs Report THE PULSE: On Friday, the Bureau of Labor and

Statistics announced that the United States added 266,000 jobs in November, thereby reducing the unemployment rate to 3.5 percent. Leading economists had been forecasting growth of 187,000 jobs. The robust jobs numbers and the beating of estimates caused the markets to rise. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 330 points, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 1 percent. Unemployment is now back to its 50-year low. THE IMPACT: These numbers will undoubtedly

serve to buoy the Trump administration. The health of the economy is a leading factor in a president’s chance of winning reelection. The Trump administration has defied conventional election norms, so it has yet to be seen what impact the economy will have on his campaign. However, this is undoubtedly good news for an administration that has been criticized over its tariff policies and tough positions on trade. As Clinton adviser James Carville famously stated during the successful 1992 campaign to unseat George H.W. Bush: “[It’s] the economy, stupid.” If that mantra holds even in today’s political climate, Trump may be well-positioned to secure reelection in 2020.

EASY DOES IT! A party by you can be simple to pull off Party planning, recipes and styling by: Rivky Friedman Photo credit: SH photography

I get it. Planning a party can feel intimidating — no matter the season. It’s easy to feel stuck when choosing which piece gets the spotlight or deciding how to revamp a table that looks overdone — or not done enough. But what if we told you that making your Chanukah tablescape can be fun? What if we told you it can be relaxing, even therapeutic? I know, I know, this sounds too good to be true, but such a phenomenon actually exists! As a side note, when I used to flip through the pages of magazines, those nearly perfect tablescapes always intimidated me. “It’s so pretty,” I’d think. “But I could never do this.”’ Yet once I decided to give it a try, I realized that styling a table was actually quite simple! Take it from me — I’m a mother of three-month-old twin boys, and I work out of the house. If it was doable for me, I’m sure you’ll be saying that too! So I’m super-duper excited to break down my stepby-step process to create this gorgeous, fun, unique and affordable tablescape for Chanukah.

GET CRAFTING The first thing you need is butcher paper. This will serve as your tablecloth, so order a roll that’s at least the width of your table. These are available at your local craft store or on Amazon. To create the tablecloth, spread the butcher paper on the table, measure the paper against the length of the table, and allow extra for it to extend on either side. Once it’s measured to size, cut it, and voila! You’ve got yourself a tablecloth. Once you spread out and flatten the paper, the fun begins. Use a white chalk marker or white chalk to decorate:. Take a plastic dinner plate and trace a circle to get that perfect, round shape. Repeat this at each place setting,

84 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

and inside the circle, write the name of the person who will be sitting at that place. Let your imagination soar, and decorate each one however you wish. Once the place settings are done, do a mock setup of the party so you have a basic idea of which foods you’d like to place where, and then label the menu items directly on the paper. Add some neat little designs (shoutout to my friend Elky who helped me with those!), wishes for a hearty appetite, and your paper tablecloth is all ready. For some extra fun, you can hand your kids some chalk and have them join in! The paper can be prepared in advance, and then you can fold it neatly and place it on a flat surface until you’re ready to prepare the party.

GET COOKING For this party, I want to give all of you hostesses out there a chance to join the fun instead of being busy serving while everyone else is sitting and enjoying themselves. These finger foods take minutes to prepare, are absolutely divine, and are suitable for young and old alike. 86 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Little heads huddle and brows furrow as the children pore over the catalog with earnestness that probably should be reserved for more scholarly work. After serious deliberation they mark their desired choices. That faraway gleam in their eyes has many a parent rushing out to purchase what their little darlings seem to be dreaming of. It’s natural. We have an innate desire to make our children happy. But are these the gifts our little ones truly want? As our children’s caregivers, we often find ourselves having to read between the lines. What children say isn’t always what they mean. A kid complaining about a tummy ache might be looking for an excuse to get away from a tough school situation, and a child saying, “I like playing alone,” might have been rebuffed by friends. Parenthood asks that we decipher what our children need, typically without the aid of an instruction manual. Learning about the different “love languages” of children, however, can help us get to know our young ones on a deeper level — and learn how to make each child feel truly treasured.

THE LANGUAGES OF LOVE We all thrive on the knowledge that we are loved and appreciated. Children, especially, need that awareness to grow up feeling secure and confident. One of the more common mistakes we make is to believe that “one size fits all.” Although we know that our children are distinct in their personalities and preferences, we tend to apply similar rules to our interactions with all of them. Perhaps we shouldn’t. After all, what works with one may not work with the other, and what communicates love to one child may not be interpreted in the same way by another child. This Chanukah, let’s gift our children that which they most crave: our love and recognition. By identifying their primary love language, we can start giving based on our newfound understanding, and they will, b’ezras Hashem, glow from the gift of our love.

1. TIME TOGETHER There’s a story told of a little boy who knocked on his father’s study and asked how much he makes an hour. “I don’t have time for this,” the father answered brusquely. “Time is money.” “I know,” the son replied. “You always say that. But how much money, Tatty? How much do you make an hour?” “If you must know,” the father

replied without lifting his eyes from the papers in front of him, “I make $100 an hour.” “That’s a lot,” the little boy said, sounding disappointed. Later that evening, the father went to the boy’s room to wish him good night. He saw his son feverishly counting dollars and coins, his open piggy bank off to the side. “Here, Tatty.” The little boy held out a fistful of cash. “I only have

104 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

$50, but can I please have a half hour of your time?” This story tugs at our heartstrings because we recognize ourselves in the foolish father’s response. We are so occupied with providing our children with all they need that we forget that what they truly need is us. In this busy world of constant responsibilities, many of us feel like we just don’t have time to get to all

we want to — all we have to. And while it may be true that we may need to do complicated mathematics to find even a moment’s free time, it is crucial to remember to schedule in our loved ones. Spending time together is the most elemental and essential form of giving to all of our children, but there are some whose love language begs for it more than most.

Is This Their Language? You might recognize the “quality time–seeker” in the child who begs for the bedtime story repeatedly, asks to play a game, or just chooses to color at the kitchen table while you cook. These children feel loved and warmed by your presence. To these kids, being told to go play quietly in their room, or to be quiet while the grownups talk, is the greatest form of rejection. When they say “Look at me!” as they demonstrate their headstand for the umpteenth time, they are really simply asking you to acknowledge they exist. To them, your loving glance feels as reassuring as a warm hug. Because there are, baruch Hashem, other family members vying for attention, it is of utmost importance to give to these children by making them feel noticed in moments throughout the day, as well as by designating time that is just for them.

Gift Ideas for the Quality Time–Seeker: Your child will feel just as loved by something official, like a trip to a museum or ice cream store, as by your taking him along on an errands run. The particulars of the activity are not nearly as important to him as the fact that you chose to spend the time with him alone. Keep in mind that a trip to the grocery store together, or even a private conversation in the evening as he gets ready for bed, will make him thrive in the security of your love.

2. EMBRACE THE EMBRACE We don’t need scientific studies to regale us with the profound impact physical touch can have and how incredibly comforting a hug can be. Still, countless studies exist that have shown how human touch makes children healthier, happier, calmer and more confident. This was seen in newborns who were held — and later fared better in life than those who were not — to pain that was greatly alleviated by a gentle touch. These benefits are derived from oxytocin, a chemical in the brain whose production is spiked by physical contact. This hormone is also associated with happiness, a reduction of stress and many other benefits. Satir, a visionary family therapist, once said that children need “four hugs a day for survival, eight hugs a day for maintenance, and twelve hugs a day for growth.” Was she pushing it? Perhaps. But of all health-boosting techniques, this one seems most pleasant — and comparatively easy!

Is This Their Language? Children are open books and clearly tell us what they want by what they offer. As adults we recognize the importance of giving based on what

The little kid who likes to sit in your lap and hold your hand — or is constantly in your space and touching you — is clearly signaling that they need your touch more. For these children, corporal punishment is more emotionally painful than for any other child. Touch, especially with them, should be loving and gentle.

Gift Ideas for the Touch-Craving Child: With little children, it is fairly easy to give to them in their love language. From holding them close as they sit on your lap when you tell them a story, to thumb-stroking their palm as you hold their hand, little ones — especially those who speak this “language” — will readily settle in for cozy cuddles.

As these kids get older, they never truly age out of their need for touch, but some do shy away from a hug. Still, you can rouse your child each morning with a gentle back rub as you coax him awake, and tucking that blanket more tightly around him will actually make waking up easier and more pleasant. As they get older, here are some small ways you can express your love to them: Pat their back (or cheek) when you talk to them, give them plenty of high-fives and fist bumps, touch their arm when you address them, stroke their hair, or simply touch their shoulder when you pass. To them, any gentle touch is a loud proclamation that they are on your mind and you love them.

3. SWEET WORDS Mark Twain is known to have said, “I can live on a good compliment two weeks with nothing else to eat.” We all love to be acknowledged and recognized for what we’ve done. Hearing it in words means a lot to most of us. These compliments and words of recognition have an even more profound impact on a child whose love language is words of affirmation. Compliments can focus on personality, accomplishments, outward appearance or anything else that affirms a child’s worth. To a child who seeks affirmation, having a performance or other accomplishment rewarded with a gift will leave him feeling empty. Meanwhile, words — especially when written on paper — will mean the world to him. And though no one appreciates being criticized or insulted, to these children, words are especially potent. “Sticks and stones may break my bones,” the old saying goes — but there’s an alternate ending that always rang truer: “...but it’s words that can break the heart.” Or heal the heart, if we do it right.

Is This Their Language? If your child tells you that you are her favorite mommy, or that you are wearing something very pretty today, she is likely hinting that she would love to hear the same from you. These children will beam whenever you praise them. They will positively glow if you do so in the company of others. Older children will love to over-

108 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

hear the way they are (positively) mentioned on a phone call, and little kids will be giddy with joy when you tell their dolly just how amazing their “mommy” is.

Gift Ideas for the Affirmation-Seeker: You can play a family game where everyone writes something they love about each family member, create a little jar with positive things you’ve noticed about your child, or for a meaningful daily connection, tuck a little love note into their school bag every day. Telling your children what you love about them, and giving them genuine and heartfelt compliments, mean the world. For a tangible gift, consider getting them a bracelet, pencil case or other item with a positive quote that relates to their personality emblazoned on it.

4. “YOU’D DO THAT FOR ME?!” When they’re babies, we do all kinds of acts of services for our kids. At a point when they can’t do it themselves, this seems logical. For some, though, even as they grow up and are perfectly capable of doing things on their own, if “acts of service” is their love language, they’ll still want someone to assist them — or flat-out do stuff for them. It has them re-experience the maternal love of their younger years. We all connect to our own love languages, and so, acts of service can seem truly strange to those who don’t need it themselves. But nothing is as meaningful to a child who feels loved when catered to as having their dinner presented prettily, with a complete set of cutlery or a sweetly folded napkin. In the same vein, forgetting to take care of something for them feels like rejection — like we couldn’t be bothered to exert minimal effort on their behalf.

Is This Their Language? The child asking for assistance in buttoning his shirt, even when you’re both aware he’s perfectly capable of doing it himself, is simply seeking reassurance that you’d do it just for him. Sometimes these children will ask for help with their chores, or that you straighten their blankie — again — after you’ve tucked them in. Some parents might find it disrespectful the way their child is constantly asking to be served, but to the child, the act of service simply feels like love incarnate. Typically, what

they ask of us demands minimal effort, but the perceived impropriety of the request might have parents hesitate. It would be wiser not to. This isn’t to say that children shouldn’t be responsible for tasks on their own, but doing it alongside them, or giving them a secret wink and telling them you’ll do it just for them, will have them feeling loved and treasured.

Gift Ideas for the Service-Seeker: These children feel thought of and loved when they see you attempting to make their life sweeter. All children are happy to find their favorite dinner on the supper table, but for these children, it feels like the most loving embrace. Tossing his clothing on a quick WARM cycle in the dryer on a cold morning will make him feel loved, pouring her a drink while she is hard at work will make her feel cherished, and asking your child, “Is there anything I can do for you?” will make her feel adored and, yes, catered to.

5. “PRESENTS, PLEASE!” “This one I got from Zeidy,” she says, stroking strokes it gently, “this from Chanie, and this from Mimi.” She’s showing off her keychain collection. For some children, gifts are the true measure of affection. Even trinkets are treasured as tangible tokens of our love. To these kids, compliments are mere words, and a hug is sweet but doesn’t last. Gifts, on the other hand, are things, and they assign them tremendous value. Unbeknownst to parents, these children will equate a lack of gifts as a lack of love. When a child shares about the new toy her friend has received, it isn’t necessarily that particular item that she is envious of; she simply wants to remind you that she, too, would appreciate something. But while these children will be as tickled by a favorite cereal as an expensive watch, they do want the gift to

show that you thought about them, that you understand them. Purchasing something simply because it was on sale or the first item you found doesn’t feel like a gift to them at all.

Is This Their Language? If your child holds on to everything she has ever received, remembers who got it for her and when, then gifts might just be her love language. Most children enjoy receiving gifts, but for these kids, the amount of gifts they’ve accumulated are demonstrable measures of love. They give love in much the same way. From their masterpieces in crepe paper to the $2 ring they purchased just for you, it’ll mean so much if their tokens of love are received in the same spirit as they were given.

Gift Ideas for the Gifts-Lover: For gift-loving children, even minor gifts are meaningful. Whether a keychain or pen, it isn’t necessarily the price of the item that gives it its value; rather, it is the fact that you spent thought, time and money on their behalf.

WHAT TO GIVE While we all have primary love languages, most of us can relate to more than one. Children, especially, need their love doses in all formats. So as you’re contemplating gift ideas, instead of poring over catalogs in an effort to determine what items are most popular this year, let’s get to know our children better to make them feel loved and understood. If we plan a game night (quality time!) around a new game (presents!), and we compliment their strategy (words of affirmation!), give plenty of high-fives (the need for touch) and help them pack away the game afterward (acts of service), our children will hold on to the memory and the glow of the night long after the party is over. This Chanukah, let’s give them our love.

The ideas explored in this feature are based on the studies of Dr. Gary Chapman.

Who doesn’t enjoy being the recipient of an elegant box concealing diamondstudded jewelry or an extravagant gold statement piece? But while expensive gifts are definitely appreciated and glamorous, that is not necessarily what came to mind when interviewees were asked about the most meaningful gifts they’ve received. Instead, they spoke about heartwarming moments of appreciation, about gestures of caring, about the special feeling of owning something of sentimental value. Because gifting is an art: an art of the heart.

BAILA: I was run-down and exhausted, caring for a one-week-old baby while still tending to the running of the house. Bathtime, mealtime, bedtime and morning routines demanded my all with no mercy for my exhaustion level. Laundry started to pile up, the house was in desperate need of a powerwash, dishes filled my sinks, and I felt truly helpless, not sure how I’d manage to go on. Suddenly there was a knock at my door, and there stood my neighbor accompanied by her trusty housekeeper Maria, the one who ran her house like clockwork. “She’s coming to you for the day,” she said in a tone that brooked no argument. “I already paid her… My baby gift to you.” I was so grateful that I couldn’t speak. Looking at my gleaming house that evening gave me a surge of energy and the knowledge that I have what it takes to pull through.

HINDY:

RIFKI:

I was married for a while when I decided that it was time to fill my home with the smell of fresh challos. Wanting to give my husband a taste of home, I called my motherin-law for the recipe of her challos that the family was so fond of. I dutifully jotted down the recipe and drew up a shopping list in anticipation of my new endeavor. That evening there was a knock at the door. I was surprised to see a delivery guy on the other side bearing a large wrapped box. Inside the box was a Bosch machine, a heartwarming gesture that encouraged my new venture and ensured that a very special person’s daughterin-law wouldn’t work too hard kneading challah dough by hand.

My son came home from cheder one Friday, beaming as he showed off the zemiros that his rebbi had rewarded him with. He pointed out the leather cover, the beautiful design, and ever so proudly, his name that had been inscribed on the inside cover. Minutes before the zman, my son approached me with a shy smile, held out the zemiros, and waited expectantly for me to open it. Looking inside, I saw that he had crossed out his name, and in his adorable seven-year-old handwriting, had penned, “A gift to my beloved mother, from your son who loves you so much.” I was so touched by his generosity and how he had gifted me with his dearest possession. Until today, this special zemiros, bequeathed to me by a generous, loving little boy, is what I bentch with each Shabbos.

MIRIAM: The entire family welcomed my newborn son with poignant emotions; my great-grandfather had passed on a short while before, and I was the first one to give the name. At the bris, my grandmother presented me with a silver becher upon which she’d had engraved her departed father’s name, which had now been passed on to my baby, her greatgrandson.

SARA: My recent move to an out-of-town community and the strict diet a health practitioner had put me on were not compatible. The local grocery carried the bare necessities, and there was no selection for someone who could eat neither wheat nor eggs, dairy or sugar. I never quite felt full. My parents were chagrined to see me when I visited, remarking how much weight I had lost. My mother was concerned that I wasn’t eating enough, and she was right, too. I was so limited in what was available, I explained. I really did not have enough of the allowed foods in town. I returned home with my father’s voice ringing in my ears: “I’m not very worried. I’m sure you’re fine! But for Mommy’s sake, please try to eat more… She’s so worried about you!” Two days later, I stepped outside and saw two shopping bags hanging on my door. Peeking inside, I found a delightful selection of goodies: halva, carob honey– covered rice cakes, nuts, sardines and other permissible stuff that would be out of my budget even if they would have been available locally. My father had gone through the aisles and carefully and lovingly handpicked diet-friendly foods he knew I loved and sent it to the “boondocks,” as he’d jokingly call it, with someone who worked near my home. The contents kept my satiated for a while, but my heart is still full every time I think of the love and concern packed into those two shopping bags.

My youngest aunt’s wedding took place on the day before I graduated high school, and much to my surprise, my devoted Bubby attended just hours after marrying off her “baby,” and then presented me with a silver dollar. Just a few years later, my husband used that very silver dollar for my son’s pidyon haben. And since the Kohen ended up returning our coins to us, this coin, a memento that’s close to my heart, is still sitting in my china closet.

I was working long-distance, and the schedule was grueling. Three times a week, I had to travel over an hour each way, which meant being up at dawn to catch a bus at 6:45 a.m. On one particularly freezing morning, I arrived to work bonetired and not sure how I’d make it through the day. How surprised I was to find a cute plastic jar full of jellies on my desk! My friend from abroad had arranged it as a little surprise for my birthday. Pure happiness filled me as those cheerful colors painted my entire day with joy and sweetness. It may seem ridiculous how far a jar of jellies can go, but on that freezing winter day (during a particularly stressful time in my life), the knowledge that I have a friend thousands of miles away who remembered my birthday and the fact that I love jellies was just the pick-me-up I needed. GITTY: I was celebrating my bas mitzvah, and my grandmother visited personally to wish me mazel tov. From her bag she took out a handkerchief that was personalized with my name. It had belonged to her mother, the grandmother I was named after. My grandmother had preserved and protected it all these years just for me, and now, as I was entering adulthood, she wanted me to have this memento. Even at twelve years of age, I appreciated the value of this special gift. Eight years later, on my wedding day, as I set out to continue the golden legacy my namesake had left behind, it was this handkerchief that I took along to absorb the tears I shed as I davened for the zechiyah to follow in her footsteps.

YITTY:

I was marrying off my oldest son and had a busy house full of young ones. We were stretched thin, physically, emotionally and financially. A dear cousin sent me a check. “Not for the couple,” she warned. “This is just for you to purchase something special for the simcha. It’s not for anyone else.” Although she probably had in mind that I treat myself to a piece of jewelry or apparel, I knew what I wanted. I purchased a beautiful set of linen with matching dust ruffles. Now that I was welcoming a daughter-in-law into the house for the first time, it felt so good to pretty up my home.

During my engagement, my mother-in-law presented me with a lace pouch she’d sewn. In it was a collection of my husband’s (impeccable) report cards, letters he’d penned from camp in his flawless handwriting, and other memorable snippets that gave me a heartwarming glimpse into his life. From all the extravagant gifts I received during my engagement, this one was just so special.

CHANA LEAH: I was sick with pneumonia and feeling awful. But instead of recuperating, I found myself in the company of two young boys in need of nursing care themselves and more TLC than I had energy to provide. Feeling rather sorry for myself — instead of resting in bed, I was being run ragged — I complained to my friend. “What I really need now,” I confessed, “is a ready, prepared breakfast. Just for me.” “Don’t worry,” she replied without missing a beat, “I already ordered it!” And just then the doorbell rang, and there sat a warm, nourishing breakfast.

In honor of my bas mitzvah (many years ago), my father took me to the store of a step-cousin and bought me a beautiful Doxa watch (you have to be a certain age to appreciate the value of this Swiss-made treasure) with real gold components. This watch adorned my wrist until my wedding. I’m not sure what happened to it in the end, but it was always something very special to me. Just a few weeks ago, my son, a gold dealer, brought us an envelope with some jewelry that someone wanted to trade in for cash. How excited I was when he took out of the envelope three Doxa watches and I remembered the special gift my father had purchased for me.

When my second child was born, my brother-in-law and his wife presented us with two beautiful medium-sized silver leichter, beautifying our Shabbos table and the hadlakos neiros experience. I eventually graduated to a family-sized leichter, but even now, when the baby of that bris is already a grandfather, ka”h, these beautiful candlesticks are often in use, and its flames get kindled by guests and on yom tov.

SHIRA: As a baalas teshuvah with no family, I found life pretty lonely. When a family “adopted” me and invited me into their home and lives, I finally felt cared for. I moved in with them, but worked twice a month in a group home for Shabbos. The first time I went away for Shabbos, I woke up to find a package of homemade rugelach and a heartwarming note hanging on my door, wishing me a pleasant Shabbos. It felt so good. It was truly a special gift.

CHAYALA: After a bittersweet engagement — filled with the heartbreaking sorrow of the tragic petirah of my chasan’s mother, mixed with the joy of preparing a new home — I was standing on the dais, ready for badeken. Suddenly, as the first beats of the badeken music were heard, two of my aunt’s approached me and gently clasped a bracelet around my wrist. Longingly, I looked down at my mother-in-law’s diamond bracelet sparkling on my hand, and got ready to join her family.

We gaze at the Chanukah licht and see purity, passion, purpose. We wish we could gaze at them forever, that this miracle called Chanukah would last all year. At Ner Mitzvah, manufacturers of all things lights and Chanukah, it is Chanukah all year. Walk into their New Jersey warehouse, and behold 50,000 square feet of light, candles and many other standard and innovative products that can light up your life. And Ner Mitzvah has its inner child too: an entire section of kiddie candles and other paraphernalia in fun colors and shapes that bring light and wonder to children’s eyes.

In the Family To the uninitiated, a large, established business is assumed to be a rigid, far-off entity built by seasoned

entrepreneurs far away from home and hearth. But everyone starts out small, and many do so right in their own kitchens. (Take heart, layman; financial success may not be at the antipode of your world!) Ner Mitzvah’s success began to flicker back in 1959, when the Lauber brothers, then in Williamsburg, would dip candles in beeswax and mail them out to people. Grateful customers would then remunerate them as as they saw fit. Their yearly candles-by-mail enterprise fast took a central spot in the then-sparse market, and Ner Mitzvah became a real business, stationed in the Laubers’ basement. When the Laubers moved to New Square, Ner Mitzvah moved along with

them and began operating out of a local factory. Their flame rose ever higher, and today, Ner Mitzvah has grown so much that it now occupies a huge warehouse in Bayonne, New Jersey. However, throughout their rise to success, the company retained its heimish feel, and until today, their shamash candles are manually dipped by their workers. “Dipped?” I ask. Oh, so it’s time to learn some candle basics.

Pure Fire Fire is all the same, isn’t it? The short answer is no. Fire draws oil or beeswax through the wicks, and that “sustenance” must be of high quality to produce a strong, clear flame. When oil is adulterated and not pure, it will produce a flame that smokes or is very small. Manufacturing Ner Mitzvah beeswax products entails a laborious process. First, pure beeswax is procured from local farms and is tested for purity, color and a number of other factors. The color of beeswax, for instance, will range from white to yellow to orange, depending on the kind of nectar it is derived from. This pure beeswax is melted in a tremendous pot, into which employees will dip their cotton wicks to

make candles. Shamashim for Chanukah menorahs are dipped into beeswax seven times, with ten- to fifteen-minute breaks in between for drying. This product is exclusively made on-site, from start to finish, beginning from about four months before Chanukah. The search for olive oil begins way before Chanukah; in fact, it is right after Chanukah that the quest for quality olive oil for the coming year begins. The Laubers reach out to suppliers in Portugal and Greece and request samples to test how they burn. They choose the nicest color oil that fuels the purest fire and reserve those batches from the suppliers. The next year, the oil is shipped to Ner Mitzvah in tremendous barrels, and it then gets bottled at the factory in assembly-line fashion, part of which is machine-operated and part manual. To produce olive oil, olives go through one press, and then a second press. The oil generated with the first press is the purest and therefore more expensive oil. This shemen zayis zach is the standard and more popular option used for the Chanukah licht. Wicks require a complex production of their own. The thickness and tightness of the wicks, and the amount of times the strands are twisted, all af-

fect the height of the fire. There are wicks made of 50 strands and wicks of 39 strands. Ner Mitzvah performs rigorous testing to create quality wicks that carry fire well. With pure beeswax or olive oil and strong wicks, Ner Mitzvah licht burn bright and pure.

Thousands of Lights Ner Mitzvah’s kaleidoscope of candle selections runs the gamut from the conventional to unconventional, including: standard white Shabbos candles, neronim candles, tapered candles, yahrtzeit candles, colored Chanukah candles, multicolored candles, engraved candles and more. For Chanukah, the most popular item, perhaps, is the package of 44 pre-filled oil cups ready to be placed onto the menorah — or its anti-spill counterpart: prefilled kits with gelled oil, 1 percent of which is a chemical component that keeps the oil solid until it gets lit. Those with a creative streak might choose the colored oils. Another popular Chanukah item is the menorah kit — a neat package of all accessories needed

128 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

to light the menorah, down to the tweezer for extracting wicks. Another interesting line at Ner Mitzvah is their havdalah candle selection of braided and carved candles. What’s the secret to those beautiful multicolored carved candles? These masterpieces are created by dipping a candle alternately into different colors of wax, and once dry, ex-

pertly carving it to reveal its layers of colors in beautiful shapes. Count on Ner Mitzvah to think of everything: silverplated flame chokers, menorah stands, safety candle holders with a pin to hold the candle (no more melting the bottom of candles!) and antique-style shul lamps. As innovators in the world of Judaica and mitzvos, Ner Mitzvah has moved on to facilitate us in other mitzvos as well. One groundbreaking item is the convenient Pesach kashering stone, which cuts out the need to somehow attach a stone to a metal hanger. And they even offer a “Korim” mat to lay out on the floor before falling “Korim” on Yom Kippur. Their bedikas chometz kit, too, as with everything else, brings beauty and simplicity into our mitzvos and lives. Ner Mitzvah is not just a company; it’s a company designed with mitzvos in mind, and they are on a constant quest to improve and come up with items for the Yiddishe home. What will they think of next? Malka Katzman is the author of Teens Talk, the literary companion that shares over twenty real-life stories from teenager’s realities.

Izzy & Dizzy Visit for Chanukah Admit it: there is a flutter of excitement in your chest when you see a colorful display of kiddie Chanukah items. Chanukah is for kids and kids are for Chanukah — and we are all really kids at heart. Izzy & Dizzy, Ner Mitzvah’s kiddie paradise, came onto the Chanukah scene six years ago with dreidels of all kinds, arts and crafts, candle-making kits and fun Chanukah party sets. The kids have become such fast friends with this Chanukah pair that they’ve taken to calling in to Ner Mitzvah headquarters with all of their grandiose ideas and requests (which are all taken seriously, but are not always viable!). Last year, the newly launched Izzy & Dizzy hotline — which offers stories, riddles and Ner Mitzvah fun facts — received 52,000 calls! What’s up and coming for this year? A glow-in-the-dark series and LED light products! Izzy & Dizzy share with us a secret of how glow products work: They contain certain chemicals, which when mixed (which happens when breaking the stick of the Glow in the Dark dreidel, for example) create the glow-in-thedark effect. Oh, and don’t forget — Izzy & Dizzy are popular for kids, but fire is not child’s play. Take it from the experts: For maximum safety, always place your menorah on a fireproof base and in a place where people don’t constantly pass. Make sure flames of any kind don’t face a blowing air conditioner or open window so that they won’t flicker.

Paint parties are a fun and relaxing way to connect and spend time with people whose company you enjoy. And it’s easily attainable even if hiring a professional to conduct a painting session for your family may be out of your budget for a Chanukah night. Follow along as I guide you step by step so you can do it all on your own! 132 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

CANVASES: SUPPLIES 1 per participant: 11x14” canvas 1” soft bristle brush

The quality of individual canvases vary greatly. Some canvases may cost $20 apiece, while others will be priced at $18 for 7 pieces! Be careful not to overspend as quality is not important for this project. You can also use canvas boards, which are less pricey. For the cheapest option, I suggest ordering canvases from Amazon.

PAINTS:

¼” soft bristle brush Large plastic plate Paper towel Plastic apron Toothpick For the group: Plastic tablecloth Large cups of water (1 for every 4 people) 1-inch-wide masking tape Scissors White, yellow, red, blue, brown and black acrylic paints

WARNING: Not all acrylic paints are washable. Be careful while painting, or purchase only washable paints (especially if children will be participating)!

There are many different types of acrylic paints. The smaller the bottle or tube is, the thicker the paint will usually be, and the less paint will be needed for each painting. To paint the picture featured, I used paints by the Pebeo brand. Their 8-ounce tubes of paint should be enough for at least 30 participants. Companies like Sargent Art and Sax True Flow are also great options. Their paints are thinner than the ones shown here, but work perfectly well nonetheless. Their 16-ounce bottles should be enough for at least 30 participants. Paints are easy to find at any local art supply shop or on Amazon.

BRUSHES: Each participant needs two soft bristle brushes — a wider one and a narrower one, as shown. The widths of 1 inch and ¼ inch are only suggestions; buying these specific sizes may turn out to be costly since the cheaper brands tend to come in variety packs. You can simply purchase the variety packs, and make sure there are enough wider and narrower brushes for all participants. These brushes are easy to find at any local art supply shop or on Amazon.

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED: Acrylic paints are water-based, which means that water is used to thin the paint. Water is also used to wash the brushes, and if paint gets on your clothes, wash it with water right away!

SETTING UP: Spread a plastic tablecloth on the surface you will be working on. Prepare each place setting with the supplies needed. Fill large cups or containers with water and place along the center of the table. Fill each participant’s plate with each color paint around the rim, leaving the middle empty. (Don’t start with too much paint; you can always add more if needed.)

December 11, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 133 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

LEARN THE BRUSHSTROKES: Brushes can be used in many ways to create different effects. For this painting I used three basic strokes. #1 In the width — to fill large areas (for the sky and wall).

#2 With bristle tips pointed on the canvas — to create narrower lines. Use water in your paint when creating fine lines (for the tree, menorah, dreidels and shadows).

1. LET’S GET STARTED! Use masking tape to create the window frame. Straighten the uneven edges with a scissors, and press down the tape with your fingertips to make sure no paint will leak in!

2. SKY: Using the wide brush, mix a drop of black and blue paint. Start painting inside the window frame, moving your way across the canvas. Fill the top quarter of the upper frames with this paint combination, and then switch to only blue paint. Continue painting across, until about halfway through the top frames. Now add a bit of white to the blue paint, and paint the rest of the window with this combination. Remember to keep painting across the width of the canvas, and not from top to bottom. To add some dimension to the sky, dip the brush in a bit of dark blue and even less black. Paint small strokes across the sky at random. Then wipe off any excess paint from the brush, and use it to paint over these strokes.

#3 Sideways, like a pen (for the window sill).

The direction in which you paint also makes a big difference, so pay attention to the instructions.

134 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

Wash and dry the brush.

3. WALLS: Mix equal parts of brown and yellow and more white to create the color for the wall. Paint the remaining blank areas of the canvas, as well as the outer edges. Wash and dry the brush.

4. TREE: Using brown paint, draw the tree branch (use brushstroke #2 to paint narrow lines). Fill in the branch with thicker strokes of brown paint. Dab a bit of black paint onto the branch to give it dimension.

5. SNOW: Dip the plastic tip of the thin brush into white paint. Applying gentle pressure, create snowflakes by dotting paint randomly across the dark blue sky. Dip the clean thin brush into white paint. Use brushstroke #2 to paint some snow on top of the branch, overlapping the brown to give the snow a dripping effect. Wash and dry both ends of your brush. Wait for the paint to dry completely, and then carefully remove the masking tape from the canvas.

December 11, 2019 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 135 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

6. WINDOW SILL:

7. MENORAH:

Using your thin brush, mix some yellow and white paint. Using brushstroke #3, paint a horizontal line that should overlap both the brown and the white at the bottom of the window.

Mix a bit of black and white paint to create a gray color. Add a dab of water to the mixture so it’s nice and smooth to work with. Using the thin brush, very carefully draw a menorah (using brushstroke #2; see image). Once you are done with the basic shape, add another layer of paint to make the lines a bit wider.

You may want to practice on a plastic plate or paper before drawing on the canvas.

To give it a real 3-D look, dip your brush generously in white paint and dab some at the center of the yellow line.

Using a small amount of white paint, add some “highlights” to the menorah. Be careful not to press too hard with your brush, because these strokes should be very thin and light.

Next, mix brown and white paint with a drop of water (make sure this color is darker than the wall), and create the shadow under the window sill.

Use the plastic tip of the brush and a generous amount of gray paint to create little lines for the base of each flame.

After the white strokes are done, wash the brush, and with watered-down black paint, do the same on all of the menorah branches.

Wash the paintbrush tip, mix yellow and white, and using the same method, create little flames. To make perfect little tips on the flames, use a toothpick to “stretch” the paint up a bit. Add a tiny bit of red at the center of each flame with the toothpick.

136 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

8. DREIDELS:

9. SHADOWS:

Dip the thin brush into red paint, and draw the outline of a triangle and a little line on top for the stick. Fill in the dreidel, and add some black paint to the side facing down. Repeat to create a second dreidel.

Clean the small brush. Mix brown paint and some water. Lightly brush it directly under the menorah and driedels.

Your masterpiece is complete! Now go ahead with the most exciting part: signing your name! You can use a toothpick and paint, or a sharpie marker. Take a step back and admire your hard work. Remember that artwork is self-expression, so there’s no such thing as a mistake! If yours looks a bit different than planned, no worries! It’s your very own original masterpiece.

MAOZ TZUR LIGHTING

While it is a much beloved tradition in Ashkenazi circles to sing Maoz Tzur after lighting the menorah, Sefardim generally do not sing Maoz Tzur.

The first letters of each stanza in Maoz Tzur spell out the name “Mordechai,” alluding to the author’s name. In Eretz Yisroel the minhag is to light the menorah outside. To ensure the flames won’t be extinguished by the wind, many light the menorah inside specially crafted glass boxes.

Jews from Aleppo, Syria, who trace their origins back to Spain, from where they were expelled, have the custom to light an additional candle every night of Chanukah in remembrance of the miracles that Hashem performed for them by safely bringing them to a new land.

While Ashkenazi children often have their own menorahs, it is common for Sefardi children to take turns kindling a light in their father’s menorah after he has lit.

Though many light the menorah during the week of Chanukah in their weekday clothing, some chassidim don a shtreimel and bekeshe for lighting.

There is a chassidish minhag to throw items, such as towels, at the one lighting the menorah. According to the Klausenberger Rebbe, Harav Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam, zt”l, this is to represent how the Yivonim would try to prevent the Yidden from doing mitzvos.

144 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 11, 2019 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

A message of hope is woven into the final stanza of Maoz Tzur, with the first letter of the first three words spelling out “chazak,” reminding us that though “the evil days are endless,” there will come a time that this generation will also experience a great miracle: the coming of Moshiach and the ultimate Geulah.

By: Ruchy Reese

UNIQUE CUSTOMS In Aleppo, Syria, it was customary for the shamash of the shul to distribute to the congregants long candles with which to light the menorah. In exchange, each man would present the shamash with a small donation for the shul.

Yidden in Tunisia had the custom of hanging the menorah at the entrance of their homes, displaying it from Chanukah until Purim.

During the Middle Ages, Italian Jews had the cus-

tom of reading Megillas Antiochus in shul, similar to the way Megillas Esther is read on Purim. Yeminite Jews read the megillah in shul until this day.

Yidden in India have a tradition to light their menorah using coconut oil, as olive oil wasn’t available when the first Yidden settled in India.

Potatoes weren’t common in Iraq, so the iconic potato latke wasn’t actually so iconic there… Iraqi Jews make fried carrot pancakes instead.

MENORAH DESIGNS The walled menorah is commonly lit by chassidim of Bobov, Vizhnitz, Skver, Stolin, Chernyobl and others.

Yeminite menorahs were historically unembellished and made of stone, likely to avoid arousing the jealousy of their Muslim neighbors.

The Chasam Sofer lit a menorah without branches in order to avoid making a replica of the menorah in the Bais Hamikdash. Many of his talmidim and descendants continue the tradition.

The rounded menorah is perhaps the most commonly used.

The Chabad community lights menorahs designed according to the Rambam’s historical depictions.

IT HAPPENED TODAY, While sweeping away the crumbs of your Siyum, it hit me. I was remembering the day you told me you joined Daf Yomi. You stood by it night after night during the most stressful time of our life. I witnessed first hand how It changed you. It changed me. It changed the atmosphere in our family. I‘ll never forget the way you set by the dining room table with half closed eyes and an open gmara, the night we married off Yanky. Or the day you lay in bed with a terrible bout of flu and had someone learn the daf with you over the phone. You were - and still are - an inspiration to us all. Admiration is a deep feeling...

HOW CAN I POSSIBLY SHOW YOU?

WHAT WORDS CAN’T, SAY WITH A J·PLAK

WHAT IS A J·PLAK?

IS A J·PLAK A PLAQUE?

A one-of-a-kind fully custom acrylic masterpiece, hand-designed by renowned artists and designers. Each J·Plak marks a milestone and lasts for a lifetime.

Some are. But most are so much more. Because each one is custom-made, you can order a freestanding piece with a base, or one that frames a photograph or a clock.

ORDER NOW

OF ALL GIFTS...WHY THIS?

SO, HOW DO I ORDER?

Because it’s so much more than a gift. A J·Plak is an expression of admiration, presented on a momentous occasion— the perfect way to proclaim eternal admiration for a hard-earned accomplishment.

To help you quickly create something beautiful for the Siyum Hashas, we’ve created predesigned collector’s editions with limited availability. Head online to jplak.com, choose your favorite, then simply follow the prompts to customize.
