A KOSHER REVOLUTION TAKES ROOT

How Grown Kosher is elevating the kashrus, taste, nutrition, and convenience of ready-to-eat produce.

1. COMING CLEAN ABOUT BLEACHED PRODUCE.

For kosher consumers, eating herbs, lettuce, and certain berries presents an unappetizing dilemma: either buy fresh produce and undertake the effort of soaking/checking — or sacrifice taste, nutrition, and visual appeal by settling for bleached or heavily washed produce available on kosher shelves.

True, pre-checked/pre-bleached products have done a great deal to ease the Jewish Mother’s meal burden. Yet the kosher consumer deserves better. Ironically, nearly all other foods benefit from kosher laws: kosher dairy is cleaner; kosher meat is fresher; kosher kitchens are safer; and kosher factories avoid many chemicals used by their treif counterparts.

Why, then, is the frum Jew sacrificing in the produce department? Why are kosher greens (bleached) and berries (frozen) so inferior? Why should kosher consumers forego some of the healthiest greens out of chashash?

The answer is simple: In most categories, kashrus is about keeping food as pure as possible. With produce, it’s about removing impurities after the fact. Until now.

2. HARVESTING THE GROWN KOSHER REVOLUTION.

For the first time ever, there’s an entire field’s worth of produce that is Grown Kosher, not turned kosher. For the first time ever, you can feast your family on kosher herbs that are grown and kept in their purest, finest form. No contact with bugs, ever. No bleaching whatsoever. No washing or checking necessary. Zero chemical pesticides. And no animal byproduct in the soil, either.

Grown Kosher takes a revolutionary approach to the entire cultivation lifecycle, under strict hashgacha. From seed to package, the produce is grown in a fully protected vertical farm, a 100% bug-free environment that maintains its

own ideal climate and is not exposed to outside impurities. That means you can enjoy Grown Kosher right from the package.

As certified by both the Orthodox Union and Tarnopol Kashrus, there’s no need to wash, soak, inspect, or worry about bugs.

3. A FUTURE OF ELEVATED KASHRUS + TASTE + NUTRITION.

This is the world’s first no-compromise kosher produce brand. And kashrus is only the beginning. The protected growing environment ensures produce is always in peak season, harvested at peak ripeness. Expect exceptional taste and the deep, intoxicating aromas of nature’s highest potential. Grown Kosher produce also keeps fresher longer. It grows closer to the point of sale, is shelved quicker, and retains more nutritional value.

At the moment, the following herbs are arriving at kosher markets throughout the Tristate Area: Chives, dill, flat parsley, cilantro, mint, thyme, and sage. Rosemary will be available soon, followed by both pre-cut and whole heads of romaine lettuce, as well as salad mixes. Grown Kosher will also offer ripe fresh fruits. No more frozen strawberries!

There has never been a better way for the kosher family to enjoy such high quality, high purity, high convenience produce. And Grown Kosher is only just beginning to plant the future.

LIKE OLD FRIENDS

(Re: A Tasting of Fruit, Issue 170)

Your Tu B’Shvat issue was refreshing in more ways than one!

I enjoyed the way Rabbi Safran introduced a collection of exotic fruits like they were old friends of his. It was nice to get acquainted with them on such a “personal” level, and I felt I knew them (or at least the selection we managed to obtain in chutz l’aretz) at our Tu B’Shvat table.

Thank you for the refreshing read and new spin on things!

THE BLESSING OF BOYS

(Re: The Occasional Blessing, Issue 170)

I appreciated that you took apart the bracha of Shehecheyanu and clearly delineated when the bracha is to be recited, and when not.

I found it interesting to read, somewhat in line with the theme covered in your previous issue, that the bracha of Shehecheyanu is recited upon the birth of a girl and not upon the birth of a boy. Though it was obviously beyond the scope of the article, as a mom of boys, I did want to mention that upon the birth of a boy, the bracha of Hatov V’hametev is recited. Well, not by the mother, perhaps, but by the father (at least in our circles).

Thank you for featuring topics that are intelligent and fire our minds!

EDIBLE PLAY

(Re: Basket of Bounty, Issue 170)

I’d like to thank you for a beautiful Tu B’Shvat issue. I’m especially excited about the colored cookie dough idea! My kids love playing with Play Dough, and this edible option that can produce such adorable and tasty results is an idea I want to hold on to.

The basket you featured is simply adorable, and I’d also love to stretch this idea and let the kids free play with all these exciting colors.

Before I do this, I’d love to have the specific cookie dough recipe used for the basket pictured, because it looks so workable.

Thank you,

LIBBY TAUBER RESPONDS:

For this dough, I used the recipe for Vanilla (or Coconut) Crisps from the Original Heimishe Kitchen — The Best of Volumes 1 and 2 (the one with the yellow cover). The recipe is on page 336. I added a half a cup of flour to the recipe to make the dough easy to work with for the kids.

A BAKING SUCCESS

(Re: Basket of Bounty, Issue 170)

Thank you so much for this cute Tu B’Shvat activity. My daughter really enjoyed helping out in the kitchen!

AND A FLOWER IS BORN

(Re: Heart in Gifting, Issue 169)

The article about Blima and her business Art in Gifting was beautiful, but from my experience with her, way too humble. The attached photo shows some paper flowers she handmade for me so graciously when I mentioned to her that I needed to wrap something while staying in the flower theme.

Like a true eishes chayil, Blima instantly creates works of art from nothing. Hashem should grant her much hatzlacha in her wok!

MY OWN LUSCIOUS CREATIONS

(Re: Luscious Logs, Issue 169)

I had such a great time making the recipe you featured two weeks ago. I used some molds I had on hand, and the results were delicious and so easy to make.

Thank you!

PARSHAS YISRO

Rashi explains, based on the Mechilta, that “Beis Yaakov” refers to the women. Moshe was to address the women first and then the men.

REBBETZIN KOPSCHITZ, A”H, a granddaughter of Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt”l, once asked the Chazon Ish for a bracha that her sons know how to learn and have cheshek in their learning.

The Chazon Ish replied, “To know how to learn, to have the capacity and intellect — that I can bless you. But to want to learn and have true cheshek — that is dependent on you, the mother. As much as they see your value for Torah, that’s how much they will value their learning.”

Indeed, Rebbetzin Kopschitz valued Torah, and her children recognized her passion.

A grandson recalls that he once visited her in the middle of the day. “Have you eaten lunch yet?” she asked.

When the young man did not reply, she went straight to the kitchen to prepare an omelet. As she stood at the stove, a smile on her lips, she whispered to herself, “I am cooking an egg l’chvod haTorah, so that a ben yeshivah should have the energy to learn Torah this afternoon.”

Even the mundane task of food preparation was imbued with pure ahavas haTorah.

MANY MEVAKSHIM used to gather around the Tchebiner Rav, Rav Dov Berish Weidenfeld, zt”l, as he delivered his shiurim

Once, one of the young participants asked a powerful question that displayed his deep understanding. Excitement was

evident on the Tchebiner Rav’s face. What an amazing question!

But to everyone’s surprise, the rav exclaimed, “This question isn’t yours! It is your mother’s! The merit of her tears and tefillos that you should grow up to be a talmid chacham — that is what enabled you to think of this question!”

The boy was an orphan who had lost his father at age nine, and his mother raised her children with unbelievable mesirus nefesh and a true love for Torah. He grew up to be Hagaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch, shlit”a, Ra’avad of Yerushalayim.

ONE MOTZEI SHABBOS, in a shtetl in Europe, Rebbetzin Nissel Heller lay in bed. Suddenly she jumped out of bed and began to dance and clap with joy.

“Why are you dancing?” she was asked by someone present.

“Hakadosh Baruch Hu blessed me with four sons,” she began to explain. The oldest, Yehuda, became known as the Kuntres Hasfeikos. The second, Chaim, was a talmid chacham who chose not to become a rav but learned day and night. The third, Aryeh Leib, was the famous Ketzos Hachoshen. Her fourth son, Mordechai, was a businessman.

“Tonight, like every Motzei Shabbos, they came to visit me,” Rebbetzin Heller continued. “Soon I heard loud voices from the other room. I went in to check what was going on, and I saw how Mordechai was passionately arguing a point in learn-

When the big moment of Mattan Torah arrived, Moshe Rabbeinu went up the mountain, and Hashem said, “Koh somar l’Beis Yaakov v’sagid l’Bnei Yisroel ” (Shemos 19:3).

ing with his great brothers. His voice rose above theirs.

“Until today, I thought that my son the businessman had not merited to acquire Torah like his brothers, but now I see that he possesses greatness in Torah too. Today I was zoche to see that all of my sons are gedolim in Torah! Should I not dance?”

It is no wonder that such great talmidei chachamim grew out of a home built on such singleminded love for Torah.

* * * * *

At a gathering for women in Bnei Brak, Rav Shmuel Halevi Wosner, zt”l, asked why Moshe Rabbeinu was instructed to speak to “Beis Yaakov,” the women, first.

He explained that there is a condition necessary for Torah learning, and that is an atmosphere of love and commitment to Torah. That aura of respect and love for Torah is created by the woman of the home. By displaying her love and joy for Torah, she sets the stage for the success of her husband and sons. Without words, her family knows what is important to her. They sense her pride and longing and are empowered to grow in this area.

The Chazon Ish would often say that a mother has more power than a father to instill ahavas haTorah in her sons. That’s because love without words is stronger than actions. “Al titosh Toras imecha” — the nonverbal sentiments of the mother remain a source of inspiration for life.

This is why “Beis Yaakov” came before “Bnei Yisroel.” The woman must lay the groundwork in her home. By creating an atmosphere of ahavas haTorah, she enables her husband and sons to thrive.

At Long Last, COVID Visitation Restrictions Dropped at NYC Hospitals

With the world approaching the three-year anniversary of the pandemic’s start, New York City hospitals have dropped the visitation restrictions instituted during COVID, much to the relief of patients and their families.

BoroPark24 reported that the Williamsburg Jewish Community Council spearheaded the three-year-long effort to end the restrictions, along with the Satmar Rebbetzin, community leaders, and organizations including Anash, Bikur Cholim, Chaim Medical, Chayim Aruchim, Chesed 24/7, Hatzolah and Bikur Cholim. A January 5th meeting between the Satmar Rebbetzin, New York State’s health commissioner, health organizations and numerous others had Lenox Hill Hospital allowing 24/7 visitation to resume on January 16. Columbia Presbyterian, Cornell, Mount Sinai Medical Center and NYU agreed to follow suit last week.

WJCC director Rabbi Moshe Indig hailed the announcement as a big win for patients and their families and thanked Governor Hochul for her assistance in having the visitation restrictions removed.

“Ever since the new governor took office, the WJCC has pushed for this breakthrough,” said Rabbi Indig. “Today’s news is about a major accomplishment, baruch Hashem, and reminds us that we should never give up.”

Much-Needed Stop Sign Finally Installed at 46th Street Intersection

After years of advocacy, local officials have finally succeeded at getting the city’s Department of Transportation to install all-way stop signs at the intersection of 46th Street and 11th Avenue.

With cars coming onto 11th Avenue at a sharp angle from New Utrecht Avenue just a short distance away, they are often unable to see cars and pedestrians in the intersection in time to avoid them, a situation that has resulted in countless accidents. According to Bo-

roPark24, area residents have dubbed the crossing as “the most dangerous intersection in Boro Park.”

Previous attempts to make the intersection safer yielded no results, with the DOT insisting that it “did not meet nationally recognized traffic engineering standards required for installation of a traffic control.” With the DOT clarifying in June 2021 that it only installs traffic control devices in locations where a significant number of accidents are reported, local officials renewed their efforts, explaining that many people don’t report accidents, while others leave before a report can be taken because of lengthy delays in police response times.

Yet another push by State Senator Simcha Felder to have a traffic control device installed had City Councilman Kalman Yeger, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and Community Board 12 joining him in sending a letter to DOT Brooklyn Commissioner Keith Bray, asking him to pay a personal visit to the intersection. The DOT responded to the letter by sending a crew down to the intersection, where all-way stop signs were finally installed.

“This is a lesson in never giving up,” said Community Board 12 district manager Barry Spitzer. “Our neighbors know we

will never stop fighting for them, no matter how long it takes.”

Eichenstein thanked the DOT for the signs, noting that they were a much-needed safety improvement in the area. While Felder also expressed his gratitude to Bray for the signs, he noted that it had taken 10 years for the DOT to finally address the dangers at the 46th Street intersection.

“In a community with numerous safety concerns, I look forward to a much swifter response going forward,” said Felder.

Calling on the DOT for additional assistance at the intersection, Yeger noted that with three streets converging to a single short spot, the all-way stop signs are just a temporary fix.

“We still need greater efforts from the DOT to ultimately address the traffic situation at that intersection,” said Yeger.

Preliminary Report Finds Engine Issues in Fatal Westchester Plane Crash

Two weeks after Cleveland residents Ben Chafetz and Boruch Taub died in a Westchester County plane crash amid stormy weather, a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the Beechcraft A36’s was flying with a damaged engine.

According to the NTSB report, investigators found fresh oil on the bottom of the plane’s fuselage and near the crankcase, as well as a hole in the top of the engine’s crankcase in line with one of its cylinders. They also discovered a deformed connecting rod cap with two fractured and entrapped connecting rod bolts inside the engine near the hole.

The NTSB said that Taub contacted air traffic control approximately 15 minutes after his January 19th takeoff from John F. Kennedy Airport to report that his plane was not flying well, though there were no indications on his instrument panel that anything was amiss. Two minutes later, Taub reported a “dead cylinder,” declaring an emergency twice over the next four minutes and telling air traffic control that his engine oil pressure was dropping. Air traffic control attempted to guide Taub to a safe landing at Westchester County Airport, but the plane crashed on water supply land owned by New York City approximately 1.6 miles shy of the runway. According to the NTSB, Taub’s plane first hit a tree approximately 100 feet above ground level, striking multiple others as it continued to descend before coming to rest approximately 250 feet from the location of its initial impact.

The NTSB is retaining the engine and several other components of the Beechcraft A36 as it continues its investigation of the crash.

66 Precinct Officer Shot in Head in Apparent Robbery

An off-duty NYPD officer was critically injured after accompanying his brother to East New York to buy a used car.

The New York Post reported that the shooting took place at approximately 7 p.m. on February 4, when an unnamed 66 Precinct officer went with his brother to East New York to complete a purchase that had been arranged on social media, through Facebook Marketplace.

The suspect pulled a gun almost immediately after the brothers arrived at 472 Ruby Street, and announced a robbery. The off-duty police officer pulled out his weapons and began firing, but was struck in the head by one of the suspect’s bullets. The officer’s brother used the NYPD gun to continue firing at the suspect, who fled the scene in a dark vehicle with tinted windows. He was described as a bearded man in his twenties and was wearing a black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants at the time of the attack.

Police have said that the 27-year-old victim has been with the NYPD since 2017 and is the father of two boys. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition.

Speaking to reporters outside the hospital in the hours following the robbery, Mayor Eric Adams said that the incident demonstrated once again that there are too many illegal guns in New York City.

“This dangerous person must be removed off our streets,” said Adams.

NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch said that lawmakers are out of touch with the realities of life in New York City.

“This has to end,” said Lynch. “We can’t keep going to hospital emergency rooms and asking for prayers. Yes, prayers, but we need more. We need our legislators to sit down now, understand that they were wrong.”

Potential Peanut Residue Prompts Recall of Drizzlicious Snacks

Citing a problem that originated with one of their suppliers, Snack Innovations is recalling multiple lots of its popular mini rice cake bites and drizzled popcorn items.

A statement issued by the company said that the voluntary recall was due to the presence of an undeclared peanut allergen, and was initiated by a supplier who discovered peanut residue in a sub-ingredient of an item used in the Drizzlicious product line. Snack Innovations noted that the potential pres-

The Drizzlicious items in question were sold in retail stores and on Amazon. Peanut allergic customers are being warned not to consume the items, which can be returned to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Affected Drizzlicious items include 0.74-ounce and 4-ounce bags of birthday cake–flavored mini rice cake bites, with lot codes N3-11BHNV3552, N3-11BHNV3462 and N3-21BHNV0093 (with best by dates of 9/21/23, 9/12/23 and 10/09/23, respectively); birthday cake–flavored popcorn, lot code N3-11BHNV3322 and best by date of 7/28/23; cinnamon swirl–flavored mini rice cake bites with lot codes N311BHNV3562, N4-11BHNV0163 and N3-11BHNV0053 (with best by dates of 9/22/23, 10/16/23 and 10/05/23, respectively); cookiesand-cream-flavored mini rice cake bites with lot codes N411BHNV0183 and N3-BHNV0092 (with best by dates (10/18/23 and 10/09/23, respectively); and salted caramel mini rice cake bites with lot code N3-11BHNV0083 and best by date of 10/08/23. The 32-count variety packs of mini rice cake bites with lot codes N3-11BHNV3462 and N4-21BHNV3532 are also subject to the recall.

No reports of allergic reactions have been reported, and Snack Innovations reiterated its commitment to the highest food safety and quality standards.

CHAPTER 47

RECAP: Raiza takes her family to the home in which she grew up, which she has carefully restored to the way it looked before the war. Zach comes to a decision: Though he doesn’t know what he’ll do instead, he’s decided he’s leaving politics forever.

Raiza wanted them out of Poland as soon as possible, just to be safe. But there were no flights from Lodz until Tuesday, and none of them were interested in driving to Warsaw again

In the end, she reluctantly agreed that they could wait. She gave them back the manuscript and bid them farewell.

“Wait!” Izzy said as she opened the door. “What are you going to do now?”

Raiza smiled a tired smile. “I would say, the same thing I’ve always done. But I’m beginning to think about retirement.”

“Really?” Zach looked amused. “I can’t see you knitting socks to pass the time.”

“Oh, you never really retire in my line of work,” Raiza replied as she locked the door to the Rebbe’s house behind them. She grinned, but with a hint of sadness in the corners of her eyes. “I’ll just run things from the shadows from now on. I’ve made a rather powerful enemy recently. I’ll do better without presenting quite so large a target.”

Izzy looked stricken, but he didn’t have a chance to respond. With a transparently false nonchalant wave, Raiza wished

them a safe flight and left.

They watched her climb into her government car and disappear.

“That enemy she was talking about,” Izzy murmured. “Was that our fault?”

“Probably.” Zach looked off into the distance sadly. “She broke a lot of rules for us, and somebody noticed. Remember that phone call? That’s my take, anyway.”

Izzy grimaced. “After all the help she’s given us, I hate to think she’s suffering for our sake.”

“You can’t look at it that way,” Zach said. “She needed this.”

Lenny frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“Helping us…” Zach began. He seemed to struggle to put his thoughts into words. “It was something she needed to do, I think. She got more out of it than she lost.”

“I hope so,” Izzy said. But a gust of wind stole away his words, and the others didn’t hear him.

After their first real meal since Shab-

bos, they davened a quick Maariv and returned to their hotel. At least, Zach and Izzy did. Lenny went to an entirely different hotel, in a very different part of town.

“The guy must be practically broke,” Zach noted, “staying in a hole like that. I knew he was struggling, but come on! It looks like a two-star gulag.”

“I offered to lend him some cash,” Izzy said. “To stay here. He said no.”

Zach didn’t know what to say to that. He entered his hotel room, only realizing after his door was shut that he’d walked away from Izzy rather abruptly. Well, Izzy would understand. He was that tired. They all were.

Zach lit a menorah in the window and lay down in bed with his clothes still on. His hands pillowed behind his head, he gazed at the lights and tried unsuccessfully to make sense of the events of the past day. It was, without question, the craziest 24 hours he’d ever gone through. A man had fired a gun at him! A gun! If Lucjan’s aim had been a little better…

He wondered why he wasn’t shaking, why he didn’t feel any reaction setting in. Maybe it was the shock. Maybe the day had been so surreal, it still hadn’t penetrated that this was real life. Maybe he was just too tired.

He was still wondering about it when he drifted off into dreams filled with strange and maddening things — fires and frozen houses and bullets the size of books. At one point, it felt like he’d had an epiphany, some deep understanding that put it all in perspective.

I have to remember this when I wake up, he thought.

But he didn’t.

Lenny got to his ratty little room in his ratty little hotel and immediately put the heating as high as it would go. It was the only way to be comfortable in a place like this. Keeping warm had become an important consideration for him lately, going from one cold hotel to another, or wandering the streets of Warsaw on foot.

The heating cut in with a dry cough and the smell of old age. Lenny kept his coat on. It would be several

minutes before the room became tolerable.

He lit his “menorah,” tea lights set in a row, and padded across the thin carpet to his bed. A thick, stocky mattress was covered by a sheet that once was white, topped with a blanket that seemed to be produced during wartime rationing.

He was exhausted. Not merely physically spent, although that was certainly true. But it went deeper than that. Lenny was emotionally drained, sick to his soul. He’d spent years deluding himself into believing in one more scheme, one more plan. One clever idea after another fell to nothing, yet he was too hungry for success to realize that the common denominator in all his failures was himself. Whatever it was that instant success required, Lenny didn’t have it and wasn’t going to get it.

And now he’d crossed a line of no return. He’d lied to governments, lied to Julia. He’d stolen. He very nearly ended up in jail, and his marriage might yet fall apart. He couldn’t go back to the real estate business, either. Much as he’d tried to ignore it, the business had never really thrived and was doing worse every month.

Soon he would be home. He’d have to pick up the pieces and try again. For, what, the tenth time?

The heat was working now, enough to allow him pull off his coat, at least. Lenny tossed it in a corner and sighed. How many times would he do this before he found something that worked? Or was he doomed to be a failure forever, ping-ponging between bursts of unrealistic hope and crushing reality?

And in the meantime, his family suffered. The whole reason he’d become this person, had run with such manic energy toward every possible chance to really make it, was to give his family a life of comfort. But he’d failed in that, too.

How much was he in the hole now?

Why did it always happen this way? He was a smart guy. He’d studied hard. People seemed to get along with him. Why couldn’t he manage to settle into something approaching a stable income?

His rabbi would tell him it was all from Heaven. But if so, Heaven must really have it in for him, no? Or was there some deep, mystical reason that Leonard Bergman was doomed to misery?

He plugged his phone into the charger and lay down on the bed, closed his eyes and tried to sleep. But in spite of how tired he was, he couldn’t manage it. He could sleep, he felt. But something was holding him back. There was something on his mind, and he couldn’t nod off until he’d worked out what it was.

He sat up again in bed, feeling the aches and pains from his long, long day, and grabbed his phone. Might as well check his messages. But there were no messages, nobody had called for him. Of course they hadn’t. Who would?

On a whim, he stabbed a few buttons and pressed the phone to his ear. It rang for a few seconds, and someone picked up.

“Lenny?”

“Julia,” Lenny said. He realized he’d been holding his breath.

“What’s happening there, Lenny?” Julia asked, anxiety making her voice waver. “Are you on the way home?”

“I’m taking the next flight out,” Lenny assured her, “but that’s not until Tuesday morning. We’re just waiting until then.”

“Good,” she said, her relief obvious. There was a long stretch of silence before she asked her next question. “Is everything okay? You’re not in trouble, are you?”

“No trouble.” Lenny thought briefly about being held at gunpoint on an empty highway, about Lucjan actually shooting at Zach in City Hall, about the ridiculous spy games he’d unwittingly stumbled into. “No trouble at all.”

“What about your… business?” She had meant to sound casual, but Lenny heard how her voice caught. She may not have known what Lennny had been up to, but she’d obviously realized it wasn’t so aboveboard. What she was really asking was, “Is my husband coming home as a free man? Or as a fugitive?” And, “We’ve gone without money for so long. Have we lost our honor as well?”

You have lost nothing, Julia, he wanted to say. But your husband, while not in trouble with the law, has certainly acted like a criminal.

And I can’t keep lying about it, either, Lenny realized. Not if I want to fix this

The most surprising part was that he really did want to fix this. He’d made a mess of things, but he desperately wanted to be someone better from now on.

Heh. Good to know.

“Julia,” Lenny said, then stopped. Much as he needed to tell her, he was terrified of what she would do when she found out. “Listen, I’m safe and I’m coming home. But you need to know. I… this trip… It was a huge mistake. I should never have come.”

“Okay.”

What did that mean? Okay, as in, “It’s all right”? Or, “Okay, face the music and stop being such a coward”?

Or maybe it was just, “Okay, that’s way too vague to mean anything. Tell

me what you mean!”

Lenny leaned his head against the headboard of the bed and closed his eyes. Start from the beginning, right?

“Listen,” Lenny told her. “There’s this manuscript…”

They woke up late.

Pizza from the community center was the only realistic option for breakfast, unless they wanted reheated soft pretzels from the nursing home canteen. Zach and Izzy had brought Lenny along. The three of them sat together and ate in bleary-eyed silence, until Lenny grinned, held up a slice, and said, “This is delicious!”

Zach and Izzy exchanged concerned looks. The best that could be said for this pizza was that it was all right, and even that was being generous. What must Lenny have been eating lately?

“So,” Zach said. “We’ve got the day open. Anyone have any plans?”

“I’ve got nothing,” Lenny volunteered cheerfully.

Izzy cocked an eyebrow at his cousin. Usually, Lenny wore a defeated, haunted look. “You seem rather chipper this morning,” he observed. “Things going well for you?”

“Not really, no,” Lenny admitted. “Not at all, in fact. Everything’s really gone wrong, and it’s all my fault.”

“Got that right,” Zach muttered.

Lenny winced, and Izzy shot Zach a look.

“And that’s making you happy?” Izzy said, confused. “That everything went wrong?”

“No, of course not.” Lenny shrugged. “I don’t really know how to explain it. It’s just…” He took another bite of pizza and chewed thoughtfully. “Making things right is gonna be a huge change for me, I think. A change so big I couldn’t even think about it. But last night, I decided that that’s it. I’m doing it. I don’t have any choice. And it’s like… like —”

“Like a weight you didn’t know you were carrying, but couldn’t bear to walk another step with, has suddenly disappeared,” Zach said softly.

Lenny looked at him wide-eyed and nodded. “Just like that,” he whispered.

Researchers who study dreams tell us that the last five waking minutes of our day determine what we’ll dream about at night. And we all know that how we sleep at night determines a lot about what our next day will be like. Maybe that’s one reason Chazal instructed us to spend those last few conscious moments of our day connecting to Hashem with prayer, namely, by reciting Krias Shema al Hamittah , or what we call “bedtime Shema.”

Moment of Truth, Night of Protection

It sounds great in theory, but let’s face it: For many of us, the bedtime Shema is a big challenge. How many of us have ever faced this scenario?

It’s the end of a long, long day. We’re tired, and now the moment we’ve been waiting for has arrived. We can finally shluff ! We shuffle to our beds, and our heads hit the pillow, which feels like a fluffy cloud about to float us off to dreamland. As our eyes flutter closed, they suddenly pop open.

“Wait a minute! I didn’t say Krias Shema al Hamittah!”

DIETS DON’T WORK

It’s the moment of truth. Do we shrug and take the Downy Express to Neverland, or do we get up, grab a siddur and begin?

No, it’s not easy, but it is so important. Saying Krias Shema provides us with special spiritual protection as we sleep. Chazal tell us that when a person goes to sleep at night, his neshamah goes up to Shamayim for a daily accounting, leaving his body “unprotected.” But saying Shema and the Hamapil bracha protects us.

I personally know someone who was plagued for years with frightening, nightmare-like visions as they drifted into sleep. They would dread going to bed. But once they began being careful about saying Krias Shema al Hamittah, these stopped.

In addition to the protection it provides, reciting Krias Shema also ends our day in a more respectable and mindful way. Yidden don’t “fall asleep”; we “go to sleep.”

A rebbe was known to learn with talmidim until the wee hours of the night. When he would finally nod off at his shtender, he would shake himself awake and announce, “Now I have to wake myself up [to properly say Krias Shema al Hamittah] — so I can go sleep.”

Reaching for the Stars

Is there anything we can do to motivate ourselves to grow stronger in this important but challenging mitzvah? One helpful tip is planning our night, for as we know, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Part of that planning means having a siddur or Krias Shema al Hamittah pamphlet conveniently near our beds. It’s a lot easier to reach over to our nightstand drawer than to traipse back to the dining room to get a siddur

Another eitzah is to split it up. The seder of Krias Shema al Hamittah consists of a number of parts. First is the recital of Krias Shema itself. Some are accustomed to saying just the first paragraph while others say all three. Then there is the Hamapil bracha, which is meant to be the last thing said before actually falling asleep. These two are the most essential parts of the service.

There are also a number of other elements to Krias Shema al Hamittah. Depending on one’s nusach, there are various kapitlach of Tehillim and other pesukim and bakashos that are part of bedtime Shema. One may say most, if not all, of these preliminary prayers and pesukim earlier in the evening while they still have ko’ach, and reserve just the actual Shema and Hamapil bracha for bedtime. These should preferably be said either standing or sitting, but if one has already lain down, they needn’t get up but can say it while lying on their side.

One very beautiful but potentially challenging part of the seder is the forgiveness prayer, where we say we forgive everyone who has ever harmed us in any way. But what if there are people who feel that they simply can’t or don’t want to forgive a person who’s hurt them?

Some say that until one is able to find forgiveness in their heart, they should omit this prayer; other opinions hold that they can say the regular text for as long as that person didn’t ask for forgiveness, or if they can forgive the person enough that they don’t intend to take revenge. Either way,

one shouldn’t say he forgives everyone besides that one specific person.

Additionally, Chazal tell us that when we forgive others, Hashem will forgive us, too. Chazal clarify, “To whom will Hashem forgive his sins? To the one who is willing to forgive others” (Rosh Hashanah 17a).

A Nightly Gift

A further way to motivate ourselves to say Krias Shema al Hamita, and specifically Hamapil, is to appreciate the gift of sleep Hashem has granted us.

As Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l, described it: “Sleep is a miracle. Why do you fall asleep? You lie on the pillow, and all of a sudden, you fall asleep. It’s a neis! And while you’re asleep, all kinds of good things are happening, such as physical rejuvenation and healing. Therefore, when you make that blessing, you should appreciate that gift because some people unfortunately cannot sleep.”

Of course, like anything, this mitzvah is easier to do if it becomes a habit. And the best time to develop good habits is as children. That’s why we’d be doing our kids a tremendous tovah if we make saying Krias Shema al Hamittah a regular part of their bedtime routine from a young age.

RECITING KRIAS SHEMA AL HAMITTAH ENDS OUR DAY IN A MORE RESPECTABLE AND MINDFUL WAY. YIDDEN DON’T

This can be especially powerful if, as parents, we can turn our children’s bedtime routine into an opportunity for bonding. When our kids were young, my wife or I would sit at the side of their beds and do a whole routine with them, from leining the Shema, to singing Hamalach Hagoel, to adding our own phrases and tunes that gently imbued them with what we felt were the most important chinuch and parental messages.

Was it easy? No. To be honest, sometimes the kids wouldn’t settle into it, and sometimes we ourselves were so drained that it became a difficult chore. But we carried on. And I can’t tell you how much nachas I have when visiting my kids, who are, baruch Hashem, parents themselves now, and I hear them singing some of those same little ditties to their children.

For all of these reasons, and many more, we won’t regret it when we overcome our resistance and wake ourselves up to end our — and our children’s — day in this powerful way.

CRASH!

The thunderstorm outside whipped around the house, smashing tree branches into windows with violent force. The woman of the house awoke with a start. Sitting up in her bed, she glanced at the clock: 4:35 a.m. Telling herself it was nothing more than a storm, she began to settle back into the comfort of her bed, but then, a BOOM! far greater than any thunderclap rocked the house. Panicking, she ran into her infant’s room and saw that the chandelier positioned directly above his crib had fallen… With a shriek, the young mother awoke, clutching her heart. Wildly looking around,

VISIONS OF THE NIGHT

What does your dream mean?

her glance fell on the bedside clock. It read only 2:30 a.m., and all was quiet in the house. There was no thunderstorm, and her baby was sleeping soundly, the chandelier above his bed safely in its place. She had only been dreaming. And yet, shaken by the dream, the young mother gathered her babe in her arms and brought him into her bed for the remainder of the night. At exactly 4:35 a.m., she was once again awakened, this time by a monstrous BOOM!, exactly as she had dreamed it earlier that night.

This time, the chandelier had truly fallen.

Everything is Announced

It’s not terribly uncommon for people to have dreams that seem to foretell events, particularly tragic ones. In fact, the 9/11 planes were more than half empty, with stories told of people who skipped their flights after having dreams that depicted their demise.

An even more widely known instance of dreams predicting an event was before the Aberfan disaster in 1966, in which part of a town was buried under a mudslide. Before the event, many people had dreams about the tragedy, including one little girl who told her mother that she’d dreamed that her school had disappeared, telling her not to worry because she wasn’t afraid of death. She then said she was happy because she’d be together with two of her friends…

Several days later the mudslide occurred, burying the town school. When the bodies were finally found, that little girl was laid to rest between those two friends she had seen in her dream.

Such stories are shocking, but what is the purpose of these types of dreams? And how is it possible that through our dreams we can sometimes access information about things that haven’t yet happened?

Rav Shlomo Amoli, a great scholar of years past, dedicated an entire sefer to this topic. In the sefer he explains that nothing happens in this world unless it is first announced here on earth. Sometimes this announcement will come through the language of birds, which few can understand, and other times the information will be relayed in a dream.

This begs the question: What exactly is a dream?

In the Worlds Above

The Gemara informs us that dreams are one-sixtieth nevuah, for during the dream state, simple human beings become somewhat similar to neviim during nevuah in that their intellect is completely silenced and only their imagination remains active. This becomes the conduit for dreams to occur.

The Arizal goes deeper, explaining exactly why we need sleep and how dreams are formed. The soul, the Arizal teaches, loses energy throughout the day and needs to recharge, to connect with Hashem on a powerful level beyond that which the body can tolerate. Each night when we sleep, only the lowest level of the soul, the nefesh,

remains in the body, while the ruach and neshamah are allowed to roam in the spiritual realms. (The highest levels of the soul, the chaya and yechidah, always transcend the body.)

The Ramchal explains that dreams are formed based upon what these parts of the soul encounter during their roamings and thereby transmit to the nefesh. If the soul encounters a malach, the dreamer may have a dream of true importance, but should it encounter a sheid, the resultant dream may be terrifying — though it is of no concern.

Breaking the Barrier

When my daughter was born, we didn’t tell anyone what we were going to name her. The Shabbos she was to be named, my family walked to the Kiddush, and during the walk, my grandfather commented that his sister, who was no longer alive, had come to him in a dream and thanked him for what he’d done for her. He had no idea what the dream meant. When he arrived at the Kiddush, he learned that my baby was named for this great-aunt.

The Gemara tells us that up in the world of souls, those who were niftar are aware of the goings-on in this world, and sometimes, the souls of tzaddikim or loved ones receive special permission to cross the barriers that exist and communicate with man through the conduit of a dream. The stories are many and the experiences varied. Sometimes they come to comfort, sometimes to relay messages. There have even been power-

ful dreams in which a niftar informed loved ones of where his corpse was to be found, enabling widows to remarry, and chilling ones in which people escaped the horrors of the Holocaust by following instructions given to them by loved ones who came to visit.

Anyone who has experienced such a dream knows for sure that these dreams are real, but many other times we are left confused, wondering what to believe about the dreams we have. How do we know when a dream is real?

How to Tell the Difference

The Abarbanel writes that a real dream contains a message from Hashem, while dreams from sheidim do nothing but induce terror, for sheidim simply enjoy to scare people. It is a klal that Hashem never sends a real dream solely to frighten man, though He does sometimes send dreams that feel disturbing. He will only do so, however, if there is a possible solution to the disturbing elements of the dream. That solution may mean a change of plans, fasting, giving tzedakah or an increase in tefillah and other good deeds.

Rabbi Yehudah Fitaya, a great mekubal of long ago, gave us a detailed explanation of the nature of night visions, explaining that there are four types of dreams:

1. TRULY PROPHETIC DREAMS:

These are only experienced by tzaddikim and always include mention of Hashem. These dreams are experienced as if the dreamer is fully awake, and upon awakening, the details remain clear in the dreamer’s mind. Even if the message of the

dream is presented as a parable, the interpretation is clearly known by the dreamer.

2. NON-PROPHETIC BUT REAL DREAMS:

These can be experienced by the average man and may foretell an event or contain a message, but they are not full nevuah. These dreams need interpretation and can be slightly manipulated according to the rules of interpretation.

3. SHEID -INDUCED DREAMS:

These are nightmares that serve no purpose other than

to terrorize the dreamer. They may contain kernels of truth, but contain no message. As such, they can be disregarded as meaningless. These dreams are more likely to occur in the earlier part of the night.

4. FAKE DREAMS:

These dreams are caused by certain combinations of food or thoughts or experiences one has during the day, and can be completely disregarded. (If one sleeps soon after eating or after eating certain foods he knows affects his dreams, he can disregard the dream as fake.)

VERY FEW DREAMS have even a touch of nevuah these days, and though most dreams are not “real,” there are certain clues that hint to us when a dream may have value:

A DREAM IS MORE LIKELY REAL IF:

It occurs on Shabbos

It occurs in the early morning hours

It unfolds in a logical manner

During the dream the dreamer is fully aware that it’s a dream

It makes a strong impact and causes the dreamer to ponder its meaning

Someone dreams about something happening to a friend

The interpretation of the dream is related in the dream

The dream repeats itself

What To Do About Dreams

What should a person do if they suspect they’ve had a real dream and not just some food-induced vision or night terror?

Obviously, if the dream contains a clear, actionbased message, such as a loved one visiting and warning the dreamer to “get out of the house!” one should certainly follow that message and just get out of the house. These types of dreams require no decoding.

But what if the dream isn’t so clear in its message? These dreams follow the interpretation they are given, and one should be careful when repeating the dream. Only a person who un-

derstands the nature of dreams and what various forms of symbolism they represent should offer an interpretation, for often that which appears bad is actually good, and vice versa. Moreover, the dreams can be manipulated on some level by one who knows how to do so, thereby affecting the outcome.

The Gemara says that a dream that remains uninterpreted is like a letter that has gone unopened, and the Zohar says that even if the message doesn’t get through to the recipient, that which the dream is meant to portray will still occur. Therefore, it is beneficial to seek interpretation from someone who will give a correct and favorable interpretation.

A Moral Awakening

The majority of dreams are not real and certainly not prophetic; if, however, a dream does contain a greater insight, the dreamer will generally know it and will feel strongly about taking some form of action.

Gedolim have said that in this generation, our dreams are, more often than not, caused by discomfort lurking in our subconscious. This, of course, can be from extreme stress or trauma, but it can also be caused by a person’s own sense of unease with himself. Dreams that are consistently negative in nature can be indicative of an aggravated soul. As the Ramchal writes, “The freed parts of the soul can move about in the spiritual realm wherever they are allowed.” While some great souls have access to higher realms, others remain “stuck” in a place where they encounter impure forces, resulting in fake and unpleasant dreams.

We might do well to view consistently negative dreams as a message from our own souls. Such a message may urge us to do more, to be more, to connect with Hashem more. In the words of Rabbi Manis Friedman, “One of the reasons Hashem gives bad dreams to good people is that when good people have bad dreams, they become better [people].”

Though we daven for pleasant and inspiring dreams, even discomforting dreams can lead to bettering our waking lives and strengthening our morality. At the end of the day, the Lashon Kodesh word for “dream — chalom” is only one letter different from that of “window — chalon.” For dreams can truly be a window to our own souls.

CELEBRATING SLEEP WHEN IT FINALLY HAPPENS

“I am six years old, and I love going to sleep. I know that my hentelach and feeselach need to rest and that my kepelah needs to sleep for fourteen hours so I can be a big tzaddik, so I do my whole shluffy chart quick, and then I get a story.”

Find me the kid who said this, and I’ll share my morning coffee with you. What real life looks like:

“I am six years old, and I HATE going to sleep. All day, my mommy tells me that I need to go to sleep. Today I played with Chaim so I only had time afterward to play with my whiteboard, and I didn’t even play Clics or cars. My mommy says I need to rest enough so my kepelah should work well, but she doesn’t know that my head works anyway. I don’t need to go to sleep so early!”

Sound familiar?

I remember lying in bed, young and helpless and miserable, listening as my sisters chattered and snacked in the kitchen while I was banished to bed. Even worse were the long summer nights, when I was left out of the fun. So I sympathize with the kids.

Of course, I sympathize with the parents too. Your six-year-old will change his tune when he becomes a teen and loves to sleep, but there’s still time until that happens, and many bedtime battles to win before that. I remember how amazingly validated I felt when, after kvetching to my mother about how hard it was to get everyone to bed, she said, “I remember when you kids were little; when bedtime was over, I felt like I had been through a milchamah.”

As a mother, bedtime is something that you’ll do and do and do and then spend the rest of your life recuperating from. So here’s some tips from a mother in

the trenches with you. I’m not talking down at you in any way. I’m just as flustered as you are. But once in a lucky day, when all stars align, the cozy things and structural shtick I try to incorporate in my kids’ schedules and bedrooms do actually work. So I’ll share those tips and tricks, and then I’ll daven together with you for happy evenings and calm nights, amen!

Okay, here’s where we get realistic.

Bedtime is is tough for kids, who want to play all day, every day. To ease the transition for them, comfort is key. They need bedtime to be expected, every step of it predictable, and every aspect of it cozy.

Here’s how:

Spend time with your kids before bedtime. Beds should be exclusively for sleep. Activities like reading, playing or snacking should be done in other spaces. Make their beds cozy and inviting. Create a bedtime routine.

Make their room feel safe. Good night! Kidding.

SPEND TIME WITH YOUR KIDS BEFORE BEDTIME. (That sounds so patronizing, I know! And I’m sorry! But I’m speaking to myself here, too.) It’s beneficial to spend some time listening to and connecting with each child

165 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 February 8, 2023 The Boro Park View

before you announce bedtime. Mommy rushing kids into bed is not a great bonding experience. A child who didn’t spend time with his mother that day will be out of bed every five minutes, citing harebrained excuses, which is really his way of getting the attention he needs. So connect before crunch time.

BEDS SHOULD BE EXCLUSIVELY FOR SLEEP. Their bed is sacred, their bed is special. Their bed needs that hischadshus when the clock strikes seven, so try not to use it as a landing ground for anything else (like playing or reading). Obviously, nothing will happen if they take their trucks up there occasionally when the baby is on the prowl, but ideally, beds should not be an official playspace, or an anything-other-thansleeping space.

MAKE THEIR BEDS COZY AND INVITING. Seriously, yum! Your inner child is going to love this. The options here are endless. Depending on their gender, age and stage, consider furry friends, accent pillows, down pillows, fuzzy slippers, an area rug, a special negel vasser rug, personal towel, fluffy throw, or a little bedside shelf.

And before all that?

Here’s something basic. Make their beds, or, if they’re old enough, encourage them to do it themselves. We all know and love that little jolt of comfort, of rightness, even, as you pull back the covers of a neatly made bed and settle in. It makes the world a more pleasant place.

CREATE A BEDTIME ROUTINE. What’s that ancient piece of wisdom we love to repeat to each other while nodding sagely? “Kids crave structure.” The more routine bedtime is, the more comfortably and smoothly it flows for you and them. What’s structure? In my un-humble opinion it’s one word: predictability. Young kids — and everyone else, really! — need to know what’s coming next.

Posting our routine up on my fridge has been a total game-changer for me. I designed and printed a simple sheet of little pictures that my kids recognize and do every night. It’s not a chart, and it doesn’t come with any rewards. The reward is the comfort that routine provides! What did I do before we had this visual aid? I nagged my kids endlessly, or, on the flipside, they nagged me endlessly. “I finished brushing my teeth already, what should I do now?”

It’s a different life now. I’m free to squeeze up the last bit of toothpaste and help them remember if they did all the pictures on the chart and can go read a book until everyone else is ready for Krias Shema and a story.

That brings me to the best part of our routine, and that’s storytime. Reading to my kids at night is something I haven’t always done but would never give up now that I’ve started. My mother was the queen of storytime; I can still hear her lilting voice reading Little Critter and The Berenstain Bears. My father was a master storyteller who conjured up the oddest, most lovable cast. Between the two of them, bedtime was a time of wonder and making memories, something I’m trying to give over to my own munchkins.

A word of caution on this, though: Storytime can trigger serious feuds, what with everyone vying for the space right next to Mommy. If you get through that and actually get to read that book, you win the prize!

MAKE THEIR ROOM FEEL SAFE. This is a biggie, so I saved it for last. Because really, sometimes all you can do is throw as many suggestions as you can into the ring and then pray hard. Night terrors are terrifying. Childhood insomnia is real. I vividly remember being ten and davening to Hashem with all my might that I should feel the zisse taam of drifting off to sleep. When my seven-year-old son struggled with this, I threw whatever I could at it, in a loving way. Listening can help. Teaching them the concept of ein od milvado can help. I also got my son an incredibly adorable cloudshaped little lamp as a bedside friend for under $8, and this made him so happy. Letting him listen to a story CD once he’s tucked in has also brought major results.

Some kids need to be in a bubble of calm to settle down. Noise machines are superb for blocking it all out, especially if you have big kids still banging about.

You can also use projectors to create a magical and cozy environment. For not much more than the price of a frappe, your child’s room can be transformed into the coziest galaxy ever. You’ll want to fall asleep in their beds!

AND AFTER ALL THIS, YOU JUST MAY GET LUCKY. You’ll do what needs to be done, and they will, too. And their eyebrows won’t hurt and their nails won’t suddenly grow and their tummies will stay full and their negel vasser won’t spill. Their sister won’t pinch. Their brother won’t punch. Their breathing will even out, and they’ll fall sleep.

And you? You’ll just breathe in the magic. Sweet dreams!

This story occurred during the year 1943 or 1944.

Reb Amram Gestetner lay in bed, unable to fall asleep. Finally, he succumbed to a restless slumber. In his dream, the Belzer Rebbe, Harav Aharon Rokeach, appeared before him.

“Rebbe!” Reb Amram exclaimed. “To what do I owe this zechus?”

The Belzer Rebbe replied, “I want you to go daven at your grandparents’ kevarim, for you haven’t been there in a while.”

“No, I haven’t,” Reb Amram admitted sheepishly.

“Go tomorrow. And if you meet anyone by the name of Reb Laizer Landau, see to it that you help him in whichever way possible.”

And with that, the Rebbe vanished.

The next day, Reb Amram glanced tensely at his watch. He was on his way home after praying at the kevarim, but it seemed his train was delayed. He sat down at a nearby bench and looked around. He soon noticed a man pacing back and forth, looking very agitated. The man appeared to be a Yid in disguise.

Reb Amram stood up and slowly walked past the man, murmuring quietly, “Shema Yisrael.”

“Baruch Shem,” the man whispered back.

“Is something wrong?” Reb Amram asked.

“Yes,” the man answered. “I’m a Polish refugee, in dire need of tickets to continue my escape. I cannot buy them, for I do not know Hungarian, and if I speak Polish, I risk being exposed and deported. I don’t know what to do.”

“Don’t worry,” Reb Amram replied. “I’ll buy them for you.”

After purchasing the tickets, Reb Amram asked, “By the way, what’s your name?”

“Reb Laizer Landau,” the man answered.

Postscript: My great-grandfather Reb Nusson, the son of Reb Amram, states: “The Belzer Rebbe being able to appear in a dream — that isn’t surprising. But that he chose to trust Reb Amram — that shows the greatness of my father.”

In 1944, a Hungarian transport of Jews arrived at Auschwitz. Among the group was a Yid with a pair of tzitzis. My great-grandfather, Reb Menachem Mendel Landau, had been at Auschwitz since the beginning of the war, and when he noticed the Yid, he immediately asked if he could use the tzitzis. He hadn’t fulfilled the mitzvah in years! Sure enough, the Hungarian Jew was more than glad to hand over the tzitzis to him.

My grandfather silently tiptoed next to the other man. Fervently and quietly, he started reciting the bracha: “Baruch Atah Hashem…”

Boom! The door opened, and in barged a cruel and sadistic Nazi. When the Nazi saw my grandfather with the tzitzis, he began beating him mercilessly. Soon the tzitzis were soaked in blood. The Nazi, still enraged, yanked the tzitzis off my grandfather and threw them near the camp fence.

Later, my grandfather slowly got up and retrieved the tzitzis. They were full of bloodstains, but my grandfather knew the tzitzis were not his and that he must return them. As soon as he found the Hungarian Jew, he handed over the tzitzis, but to my grandfather’s surprise, the man did not want to take them back. He was scared he would get beaten!

Gratefully, my grandfather took back the precious tzitzis and kept it with him until the end of the war, through the death march until liberation.

To this day, my grandfather’s tzitzis are on loan to the Amud Aish Holocaust Museum. They were also exhibited at the Auschwitz Exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City, offering inspiration to many. These tzitzis are a symbol of mesirus nefesh for all!

SURA’LA MEISELS, 11TH GRADE, SATMAR SCHOOL

Somewhere within the region of the vast Carpathian Mountains was a town known as Oiber Apsha. On one of the big, privately owned farms lived a young girl named Gutta. As soon as the rooster would warble his morning crow, Gutta would run to check which one of the animals on the farm had awakened, her black curls bouncing as she completed her morning chores. She loved every one of the animals on the farm, and they loved her back.

Life for little Gutta was bliss.

On a nice fall day in 1942, while her mother was busy cooking and jarring fruits for the upcoming winter, Gutta’s idyllic childhood came to an abrupt stop. The notorious Nazis had invaded her beloved hometown and transformed her life forever. They stuffed the townspeople into horrific ghettos and then squashed them into cattle cars to send them to the death camps. All too quickly, they were stripped of the last shreds of human dignity.

Life for Gutta, who was by now a young teenager, was blissful no more.

Throughout the horrors, Gutta’s father’s parting words echoed in her mind: “Ven a Yid iz in a farlegenheit, geit ehr rechts — A Yid who faces a difficulty goes to the right!”

Gutta arrived at Auschwitz soon thereafter. During the infamous selection, Gutta was terrified, for in addition to her young age, she was short by nature. When her turn came, Mengele, ym”sh, asked her how old she was.

“Achtzen,” she lied, hoping to avoid getting sent to the crematoriums.

He cynically replied, “Vi du bist achtzen, bin ich neintzen; a gleiche para — If you’re eighteen, then I’m nineteen.” And he cruelly kicked her to the left.

But Gutta’s father’s words were still ringing in her ears: “Ven a Yid iz in a farlegenheit, geit ehr rechts — A Yid who faces a difficulty goes to the right!”

Sure enough, the minute Mengele got busy, Gutta carefully eluded him and rushed over to the right!

GRADE 12

CHANA RUCHY ROTTENBERG, 12TH GRADE, BNOS BOBOV 45

There was a thick silence as the girls looked on with bated breath. The wicked German peered around, carefully examining every one of the prisoners.

“You!” He suddenly pointed at one of the girls. “You will provide our entertainment today!”

The girls watched in horror as sixteen-yearold Fraida Gittel Rubin, a great-granddaughter of Reb Shayele Kerestirer, stepped forward. They knew this would be the last time they would see her alive.

The girls were all too familiar with this routine. Every so often, when the Nazis, ym”sh, were in the mood for a “treat,” they did this. They chose any random person, threw them to their vicious dogs, and that was the end. Nobody ever came back.

Trembling, Gittele followed the Nazi, whispering Shema and Vidui. She, too, knew exactly what was going to happen next, and she was preparing to enter the World to Come.

The Nazi picked her up and threw her to the wild dogs. The animals immediately surrounded her, ready to pounce, but incredibly, they didn’t. As soon as they got close to her, the dogs all turned around and walked away.

Again and again, the Nazi threw her toward the dogs, but the same thing kept happening. Not a single dog wanted to touch her.

Enraged, the Nazi fell upon her, beating her and yelling, “Filthy Jew! Even the dogs don’t want you!”

Gittele was badly hurt from the beating, but her life was spared. She attributed this miracle to her saintly grandfather, Reb Shayala, zt”l, who was surely watching over her from Above.

SLEEP LESS, SLEEP MORE

If you’re a teen who feels like you haven’t slept for days, you’re not alone. Randy Gardner was 17 when he broke the world record for the longest time without sleep, staying awake for 11 days and 25 minutes. On the flip side, if you’ve ever wished you could sleep for a week, that’s actually something that can happen, too. Wyatt Shaw holds the world record for the longest sleep, which was also 11 days long.

(Of course, Guinness isn’t counting Choni Hame’agel, who slept for 70 years!)

WHILE YOU SLEEP

SWEET DREAMS

SLEEP LIKE A BABY

Dr. Spock was a hugely celebrated pediatrician of the twentieth century. While some of his advice is still considered spot-on today, others are slowly becoming antiquated. Here’s one example. “Put the baby to bed at a reasonable hour, say good night affectionately but firmly, walk out of the room, and don’t go back. Most babies who have developed this pattern cry furiously for 20 or 30 minutes the first night, and then when they see that nothing happens, they suddenly fall asleep! The second night the crying is apt to last only 10 minutes. The third night there usually isn’t any at all.”

—Dr. Spock, Baby and Child Care

Today, this method of sleep training is called the “cry it out” method, and most professionals strongly advise against it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could sleep while you wash the dishes or clear the table? Actually, no. Sleepwalking is categorized as a parasomnia, which is a class of disruptive sleep-related disorders. People who sleepwalk can injure themselves, so stay in bed when you sleep.

Why don’t we act out our dreams while we sleep? There’s a special neuroprotection that paralyzes a dreaming person’s muscles so they don’t move. Basically, the brain releases chemicals during dreams that suppress muscle movement. That’s how dreams stay in dreamworld.

BUT I CAN’T FALL ASLEEP

So you know how when you can’t fall asleep, your mother tells you that resting in bed calmly is almost as good as sleeping? That’s only partially true. While you rest calmly, your brain produces a brainwave pattern called the alpha rhythm, which is also called the relaxation rhythm. This relaxation rhythm has some amazing benefits, including improving your mood and reducing stress. But at the end of the day, nothing replaces the benefits to the body that deep sleep provides.

GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT

Some people have non–24 hour sleep-wake syndrome, which means that their bodies don’t follow a regular 24-hour cycle of awake periods and sleep periods. Instead, they might have 25- or 26-hour cycles, which means that they get tired later and later each day, until their sleep schedule is totally different from the rest of the world. This disorder mostly affects blind people who can’t distinguish between light and dark.

SLEEPY FACTS:

The average person falls asleep in

35% 37 MILLION 7 MINUTES

of adults in the U.S. get less than 7 hours of sleep every night

SLEEP TRAINING 101 WITH TOBY LERNER:

Sleep issues usually mean that a child is missing sleep skills. Sleep skills are the ability to soothe oneself to sleep without help. This is really important, because all people, adults and children, sleep in cycles. Between sleep cycles, we wake up partially. Usually, an adult simply rolls over and goes back to sleep. But a child who can’t soothe himself to sleep will start crying, because he doesn’t know how to go to sleep on his own.

3 MOST COMMON ISSUES:

1. Eat-sleep association: When a child can’t fall asleep without a bottle or otherwise being fed to sleep.

2. Sleep props: These change as a child grows, but include rocking, singing, patting or parent-dependency (when the child can fall asleep only if a parent is present).

3. Overtiredness: The tiredness factor is often misunderstood. Keeping children awake longer does not help them sleep better. Being overtired makes it much harder for a child to self-soothe to sleep.

Myth: It’s the parent’s responsibility to get the child to sleep. Truth: Every child can learn to go to sleep on their own.

Please keep in mind that these are averages and can vary from child to child.

RECAP: SHIMON IS LOST AT SEA, SEARCHING FOR YOSEF AND RACHEL, WHEN SOMETHING HITS HIS SHIP. MEANWHILE, MAROONED ON AN ISLAND, YOSEF SAYS HE WON’T BUILD THE PARTS TO REPAIR THE SHIP UNLESS CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE MET.

MY EARS SEEM TO BE DISMALFUNCTIONATING. I THOUGHT I HEARD YOU SAY YOU WON’T FOLLOW MY ORDERS. HA-HA! SO SILLY OF ME! SO DANGEROUS FOR YOU!

ATTABOY, KID! DON’T BACK DOWN!

THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. YOU DO AS I SAY, OR YOU’LL GET NOTHING FROM ME.

QUIET, YOU NINNYHAMMER! YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE ON MY SIDE!

NOW YOU LISTEN. I AM THE PIRATICAL BOSS-PERSON HERE, AND YOU ARE THE SNIVELING SLAVE! SO YOU WILL DO AS —

I’M SORRY, BOSS!

YOU TALK MIGHTY BIG FOR A GUY MAROONED ON AN ISLAND. I’M THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN HELP. EITHER YOU AGREE TO MY TERMS — OR YOU ROT HERE FOREVER!

NO, IT’S NOT DOLPHINS ATTACKING. IT’S A STRAY ROWBOAT! WHERE’D THAT COME FROM?

WAIT A MINUTE — THAT’S YOSEF’S!
