Swiss Post Solutions (SPS) has replaced Xerox as the Brandeis mailroom operating partner after complaints from students, faculty and staff of lost packages and slow delivery. Swiss Post Solutions began their contract with Brandeis on June 1, and since then the mailroom has received new package tracking software and a new store manager. The change in providers is expected to result in more efficient package delivery and fewer package losses. Due to the large volume of packages received last year, especially during the busy periods at the beginning of the school year, the mailroom received many complaints from students, faculty and staff about slow delivery and lost packages. Several measures

have been implemented to prevent a repeat of last year’s events. More temporary and seasonal staff has been hired to compensate for the larger amount of incoming packages during movein day, Aug. 26. Eight pods have also been placed near first-year dorms, where first-years’ packages will be delivered during international and domestic student move-in. Students will be able to pick up their packages near their dorm, rather than traveling to the mailroom in Usdan Student Center. The mailroom will be open for extended hours, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, until Sept. 7. It will also be open Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 (move-in days). Swim coach leaves Brandeis after HR investigation By Celia Young and Elianna Spitzer editors

After a human resource department investigation into his conduct, Coach Mike Kotch is no longer the Brandeis Universi-

ty Swimming and Diving Team (BUSDT) coach. Brandeis University has declined to comment on whether Kotch was fired or if he resigned. Kotch was placed on administrative leave on May 2 pending the outcome of a human resources department investigation—not by

the athletic department—according to an email to the swim team by Acting Athletic Director Jim Zotz, obtained by The Brandeis Hoot. A subsequent email from Vice President for Student Affairs Sheryl Sousa informed BUSDT that Kotch no longer works at Brandeis, but did not explain the

circumstances of his departure. As of press time, Brandeis has not released an official statement regarding Kotch, or the search for a new swim coach. Kotch’s Brandeis athletic webpage has been removed and replaced with “TBA,” or “To Be Announced.” Kotch’s page was not updated on

May 2 to indicate his placement on administrative leave. Although there was no official statement, when asked for comment, Assistant Vice President for Communications and External Relations Max Pearlstein said in See SWIM, page 3

Board of Trustees pushes divestment vote back By Elianna Spitzer editor

Fossil fuel divestment remains a central topic for students, faculty, administration and trustees entering the fall semester. A June statement from Liebowitz places a Board of Trustees vote on the matter in November. They are expected to vote on an updated version of the “Brandeis University as a Responsible Investor” document in September and use it to guide the November decision. The struggle over divestment, the removal of university endowment funds from investors that

support fossil fuels, goes back more than six years. As early as 2013, Brandeis undergraduate students voted in favor of a ballot initiative to divest. In 2015, students and faculty formed an exploratory committee at the request of former President Lisa Lynch. The committee produced a 170-page report that asked board members to divest the university’s endowment. Instead of encouraging fossil fuels by investing in the fossil fuel industry, according to the report, the university should invest in greener, renewable forms See DIVESTMENT page 3
