Dr. Blanca Vega ’98 has always been critical of the spaces she finds herself in and Brandeis University—with its shortcomings in providing equality for all its students regardless of their racial backgrounds—is no exception, she explained in a keynote speech at the Faculty Club on Friday, Sept. 6. Though Vega has spent 16 years in administration positions in secondary education, she recounted struggling at Brandeis, in what she called a “white space”—a place which renders minority groups invisible. During her time here, students were comfort-

Brandeis warns students about mosquito-borne diseases By Celia Young editor
Several communities in Massachusetts, including Middlesex County where Brandeis resides, are at risk of two mosquito-borne diseases: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus and West
Nile Virus, according to a Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) press release. went out is really meant to just inform students about how to take care of themselves and how the school is supporting them.” There have been no cases of EEE in Waltham or at Brandeis, said Denning, and the email was meant to inform students on how to best take care of themselves. Some concerned parents and
students had contacted Denning, she said, asking about how best to take preventative measures. “Right now in Waltham, for EEE we are a low risk region and a moderate risk region for West Nile Virus,” Denning said.“I recommend that if you’re out in the eveSee MOSQUITO, page 5

Day received an offer from Brandeis for a one year position but would have to re-apply for the position or find a new job after the school year was out. Day ultimately decided to leave Brandeis because of the lack of opportunity the university was able to offer. “The UH Hilo [University of Hawai’i at Hilo] position was See AAPI, page 3
