MAJOR RENOVATIONS DONE IN GOLDFARB AND FARBER LIBRARIES

Matthew Sheehy led the university in enhancing library infra-

structure.

Throughout the summer, both Goldfarb and Farber libraries have seen steady improvements to their infrastructure as well as gained additional study spaces for further student interaction. Matthew Sheehy, the Brandeis National Committee University Librarian, acts as the strategic guide for the university as well as a supporter for the faculty in regards to different teaching methods and research. Sheehy reports to the Provost of the University, Lisa Lynch. Sheehy went into detail about all of the renovations that need to be made at the library. Since Goldfarb was built in the 1950s and Farber in the 1970s, there are many areas of the library that were used in the 20th century that are no longer in use today, which

were the main areas that Sheehy worked to renovate. He explained that it would be way too expensive to tear down the current library and build a new one, given the limited capital resources he is allocated. Because of this, he is working to make due and renovate in the places where he can. In general, Sheehy is looking to continuously make improvements as a community center, keeping all the main archives as dry spaces, making the library more environmental friendly and displaying student’s artwork around the library. The first major renovation that was done was adding additional lighting to Farber one near the cafe area. According to Sheehy, the old microfilm room was no longer in use, so it was converted to help bring more lighting to the ground. Lighting was also added See LIBRARY, page 4

Amid an oftentimes public feud over the direction of medieval academia, Brandeis Professor Dorothy Kim (ENG) told The Brandeis Hoot that her colleague,

Rachel Fulton Brown, “crossed the line” when she tagged Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative writer and provocateur, in a Facebook post concerning Kim. Since being tagged in the post on Sept. 14, 2017, Kim says she’s been the target of threats and harassments on the internet.

“Because the alt-right broadcast my office location, I had to secure my physical workspace. I had to explain the situation, request security and plan safety measures with my university administrators, campus security, family, academic collaborators and students,” Kim said in an op-ed pub-

lished on “Inside Higher Ed” last month. “Brandeis has been very good about taking steps to address my online and physical security,” Kim said in response to questions from The Hoot. Due to the sensitivity of the subject, Kim would not discuss what measures the university

has taken. Kim and Brown, an associate professor at University of Chicago, have engaged in sporadic online debate which Kim says began in January of 2016 when she responded to Brown’s personal blog, See MEDIEVAL, page 2

Brandeis Professor Anita Hill (HS) spoke out in a New York Times opinion piece, on Public Broadcasting System (PBS) Newshour and to The Washington Post, among others, about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings. In the opinion piece, Hill calls for several measures to encourage a fair confirmation hearing that addresses the allegations against Kavanaugh of sexual assault. Kavanaugh was accused by Christine Blasey Ford, a research

psychologist, of sexually assaulting her at a party when they were both in high school together. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation. Hill’s opinion piece was published on Sept. 18 and immediately followed by her appearance on PBS Sept. 19. In The Times opinion piece, Hill relates the current controversy to her experience accusing Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. “Today, the public expects better from our government than we got in 1991, when our representatives performed in ways that gave em-
