An independent investigation into the Brandeis athletics department found that there was insufficient supervision of Basketball Coach Brian Meehan and a failure of the interdisciplinary process to address his discrimination and abuse of the basketball team players, according to a 25-page summary report President Liebowitz released Wednesday, Sept. 4. The independent investigation and subsequent report began after a drawn-out Human Resources investigation of Meehan, who was fired over the allegations April 5 of last year. Vice President for Student Affairs Sheryl Sousa resigned the same day the report was released. Lynne Dempsey—the Brandeis athletic director who was placed

on administrative leave—and Vice President of Human Resources Robin Nelson-Bailey have both been demoted, placed on six month probation, removed from a supervisor role—meaning they have no authority over individuals, staff or students—and had their salaries reduced. Jeffrey H. Ward, who was formerly athletic director at Bowdoin College, has replaced Dempsey as an interim athletic director. Larry Lewellen, who was recently hired as an advisor in HR, will become interim vice president for human resource. Ward and Lewellen will review Dempsey and Nelson-Bailey’s work after their probation to determine whether or not they will continue to be employed by the university. Brandeis and Hampton Univ. receive grant By Sabrina Chow editor

Hampton University, a private historically black university in Virginia, has received a near $4 million grant over six years from the National Science Foundation

(NSF) to perform collaborative research with Brandeis as part of the Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) program. Their program is named: The Hampton University-Brandeis University Partnership for Research and Education in Materials.

Since the program is mainly for the benefit of the historically black college or university (HBCU) Hampton, they will receive all the funds to further their program in materials research. Dr. Demetris Geddis, the assistant dean and department chair of Electrical and Computer En-

gineering at Hampton University, is the principal investigator of the project. Brandeis professor Seth Fraden (PHYS) is the co-principal investigator. The NSF, since its conception, receives around $350 million in funding each year, with $60 million set aside for 20 different na-

tional Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSEC). Brandeis has one of these centers. Going into its 10th year of funding, faculty at the Brandeis center mainly focus on biology, because the main strength of the See GRANT, page 3

Head swim coach position filled by Nicole Carter By Elianna Spitzer editor

Nicole Carter will start as the new head coach of Brandeis women’s and men’s swimming and diving (BUSDT) on Sept. 10. Carter is a Wheaton College alum who has been an assistant coach for the Wheaton swim team for eight seasons. This will be the first time she’s taken on the role of head coach of a college team. Carter applied for the Brandeis coaching position after the head coach of Wheaton, Barrett Roberts, pointed out the opening and encouraged Carter to apply.

Barrett told the Brandeis Judges that Carter has been an important part of their coaching staff and “she deserves a lot of credit for not only our recent success at the conference and national level, but more importantly for our program’s culture change which enabled that success.” Jim Zotz, former Acting Athletic Director, echoed the sentiment, telling the Brandeis Judges, “Nicole brings a reputation of high energy, excellent organizational skills and a strong commitment to her athletes.” The position opened after Mike
